#I'm a wheelchair user y'all

Becoming a wheelchair user gave me new insight on Barbara Gordon. Her fingers are callused, and she probably had to wear wheelchair gloves to save herself from blisters. Steep ramps make her swear under her breath. She's struggled to open doors in public for a while. Until realizing she could just ram into most of them, and they'd open. She was lucky to already have good upper body strength, otherwise it would have been hell. It took her months to figure out how to do a wheelie. Not because it was hard, but as she was scared of hurting herself more. She got handlebars in her first chair and instantly regretted it. Worst decision. The underneath of her chair: perfect place to keep emergency weapons. Little kids are way more polite about her chair than adults. So she hosts more storytimes at the library. She learned pretty quickly that being in a wheelchair doesn't stop her from being strong as fuck.

Now y'all just taking things way out of context to be mad and start a hate train because my conflicting needs post was to @a-polite-melody and not at all to Morg, who I have not spoken to, because my posts as I have said repeatedly are about the ableist takes I'm seeing cross my dash BECAUSE THEY HURT ME, A PHYSICALLY DISABLED PERSON.
I have literally so many things wrong with my body and am even an occasional wheelchair user myself!!! And I am still going to protest when I see someone say "sensory is comfort and not need" and "people who have such extreme sensory problems that things like headphones and tinted glasses don't help are rare and don't go out in public"!!! That's ableist that's ableist that's ableist and it hurts ME a person with a BRAIN INJURY who still has to go out in public and work and do shit even though those types of devices only barely take the edge off and do not solve the problem!!! I am allowed to be mad that people are being ableist about my disability!!!
Also this person is white trying to lecture a black person about intersectionality while being hypocritical about who is allowed to talk about ableism in disability spaces. Take black theory out of your white mouth if you're only going to use it as a weapon to get noisy black people who's words you don't like to shut up.
ALSO my conflicting needs post was "both people should be accomodated" and "providing multiple options is always better" so talk about bad faith. Fucking Christ this is exactly why this shit pisses me off. It's LITERALLY on a post about how I gained access to a PHYSICAL THERAPIST OFFICE via wheelchair because I was PARALYZED DOWN MY RIGHT SIDE AND COULD NOT WALK and it was still not accessible to me because I also had a BRAIN INJURY that could not be easily accomodated and I could not ask for better because I COULDN'T TALK BECAUSE I HAD APHASIA FROM MY BRAIN INJURY. It was a space literally designed for mobility issues and there was still inadequate accessibility.
Or did you just skip over that part and go straight for the piece that you could take out of context?

as someone with vascular EDS, severe hEDS, (and a bunch of other conditions that I will not share because I do not like to talk about my medical conditions):
the EDS community on here is absolutely rancid. Y'all are so mean and horrible to people with other disabilities holy shit. Can we please stop pretending like we're the most oppressed most disabled people ever? Because hey, hey we're not. And that's ok. That's actually a good thing. I'm a full-time wheelchair user. I'm ambulatory on a technicality. EDS sucks absolute balls. But like. Can we stop talking over other disabled people. I'm so fucking sick of it.

i have an ankle brace for my chronic ankle instability and i have a visible limp (because y'know my ankle's not stable) and the way people think they can just say things to me about it to me or ask me for my medical history is. oogh. its not fun
i've had a customer say he thinks i'm definitely faking it because my gait (aka the way i walk normally) reminds him of 'a dog pretending its paw is hurt so someone will feel sorry for it' and had the gall to be shocked when i was on the verge of tears telling him that my ankle doesn't work properly and that he was being an asshole.
i had another customer who laughed at me because she saw me limping from the car to the front door of my store. and she wouldn't answer me when i asked what was so funny about it. she just kept going 'well... you know' and then laughing again. like what the fuck. is so fucking funny.
wheelchair, cane, and crutch users, i am so fucking sorry. i am so so fucking sorry because you probably have to put up with ableds' bullshit all the time especially when you're working. y'all should have a license to kill with a blunt object

I'm fucking crying. Y'all. I'm in a fucking chair and I cross my legs all the fucking time. WE CAN CROSS OUR LEGS!!! We can pick our legs up with our hands and cross them!! Some of us can move our legs enough to cross them!! If you're in a chair that doesn't mean you're fully paralyzed.
abled people shut the fuck up have you never met an actual wheelchair user in your life

are there any other self-propelled manual wheelchair users on here w/ hypotonia (low muscle tone)? do y'all use anything for your chairs to make sitting more bearable/less painful in terms of postural problems?
i'm talking in terms of like, anything that could be done to a quickie 2 model, but i'm also assuming that self-propelled manual wheelchairs aren't exactly a preference when it comes to having low muscle tone lol.

reply roundup!
would you believe I was actually planning to do this the very morning the [licorice gorb] got blazed (obviously it was a better idea to put it off until after it was over)
also someone reblogged it with a screencap where it says "blazed by notpikaman" under my username and tbh I am so glad I'm not the only one burdened by that information XD and thank you to everyone who said "good blaze op" or some variant thereof, a high compliment
anyway welcome all you new followers and also folks who just wanted to reblog the one thing and be on your merry way, I do this occasionally so that I actually get to reply to y'all's tags n such <3 (without making a lot of blog clutter)
we also have a couple new image descriptions! thank you to @cherrycreamsicle for the image description on [suitcase] and @istherewifiinhell for the image description on [kirbear]! both have been added as alt text to the original posts, with credit.
on [the last roundup] @cherrycreamsicle said: Hey no worries! Any accessibility is good accessibility! I'm always happy to help! Hope you and your wife are doing well ^_^
thank you! I felt like it was important to acknowledge that putting it in alt text is not as good for some people as putting it in the body of the post, but it is still definitely better to have. (and thank you! she's doing much better now.)
on [watch] @ceylonsilvergirl said: Do it!! Watch repairs!! Those skills are so niche and needed And especially good for people inclined to pay attention to the details
it just seems really fun! I love little mechanical things and building miniatures and stuff like that so it feels like something I'm capable of! (also I can do it at home for only a couple hours at a time and possibly still make money lol)
on [watch] @macro-microcosm said: i hope you guys make big bucks in a lil watch biz some day
thanks! I'm sure I'd badger my beige-loving partner into letting me make at least one of them my signature kirby-pink lol
on [eggroll] @ceylonsilvergirl said: You felt good enough to go out without mobility aids!! You felt that good! That’s fantastic news! Of course use them when you need them, they’re good! But your body was doing well! That’s whats important
yeah!! it's important to me to emphasize to others that it's not the not using the aids it's the feeling well enough to not need to, cuz it's a mistake that's like. pretty common and even popular. (consider "wow this wheelchair user walked the stage at their graduation and was clearly in pain the whole time" type of stuff. the ubiquity of that type of "inspiration porn" has a huge impact on the disabled community, especially because a significant portion of us are exposed to that first rather than the realities of being disabled.) but feeling well even for one day means my body is still capable of feeling well under the right circumstances, and that matters!
on [kirbear] @hobgirl told a nice story I feel weird about copy/pasting directly but yknow it's there in the tags as long as they choose to leave it up
stuff like that is scary, and the doctors and veteran patients know that! I'm glad you had something comforting with you, and that it was able to lead to even more support than just what it carried by itself.
on [printer] @angst-and-fajitas said: every time I've ever interacted with a printer it has always felt like this and @ceylonsilvergirl said: I have yet to meet a printer that will just friggin’ work
honestly like 90% of the time printers work fine and I don't even think about it, but that last 10% of the time feels like Such A Trial that it really dominates the conversation lol
anonymous asked: Happy kirby day mx gorb :>
thank you! this is what reminded me to actually draw kirby a little cake so it was helpful lol
on [licorice] @ceylonsilvergirl added the [link] for the exact candy I was thinking of
so glad they still exist tbh. don't even remember if I've ever had one I'm just glad they exist!
on [meds] @queenhippolyta said: Do you find that the cromolyn helps you? I started it maybe two months ago but haven’t really noticed a difference yet
it seemed helpful for me when recovering/restabilizing from my covid vaccine, which laid me out for months, but there was a lot of other stuff going on and it was more of a, well, stabilizer than an actual boost. I really don't know if it's doing anything for me now as high vs low compliance really doesn't seem to make a causative difference. (there is a correlation, because on bad days it's harder to get up and take it in the middle of the day, but that's like. definitely not causative.) it might be that different dosing would work better for you, or it might be that it just doesn't really help you! mcas is a tricky beast, as we all know. (I hope you actually find this buried in the roundup >n< )
on [corner] @ceylonsilvergirl said: dang kirbo’s on the ceiling again, grab the broom
this one just made me laugh
on [licorice] @thesleepingnini said: hay wanna draw some silly stuff like this again, baka may sponsor ng ipad diyan
good news, I will continue to draw silly stuff again whether I'm paid or not! additional good news, for those who want more specific silly stuff drawn commissions are open on [kofi] for a few more hours (~6 probably depending how long this post takes me to finish)
@sonisis asked: iEs El Kirbo!
it sure is!
on [licorice] @jenjensd said: It’s a good thing they clarified it’s red liquorice because I legit thought they just gave Kirby a super long tongue for some reason
I wouldn't put it past me tbh (which is why I specified XD )
anonymous asked: Hi your Kirbys are very nice
thank you! I love to draw a Little Guy
on [crowd] @ceylonsilvergirl said: Like when you’re singing to yourself, and then realize people can see you
whoops you've activated one of my fun facts! whenever I am Out And About by myself (which is very very rare these days What With The Illness), I am almost always singing. I am completely comfortable singing at full volume at any time and any place (aside from general noise decorum such as "not in the library" and "not while my wife is sleeping"). so I have not had this specific version of this problem in my lifetime lol
anonymous asked: “Art” that a four year old could do? Don’t quit that day job at target.
look ma, my first anon hate! I'm big time now!
for real though, like, I wanna answer this one kinda seriously even though I'm sure this was just a driveby, because I know it's a common insecurity. why are you upset? if anyone can do it, why shouldn't I? why aren't you?
I make very very very little money from this blog (I even looked up the numbers, in the nearly 5 years I've been doing this I've made a total of ~$1650 to date), but that's because I'm really not putting in effort to make it ~profitable~. my patreon is has no rewards and my commissions are closed (except for literally right now), I only put very rare purposefully designed products on my print-on-demand stores and I haven't made my own stickers to sell in over a year. so if you're mad about people giving me money, don't be. even if you very very conservatively assume only 10 minutes per drawing and also zero other time put into running this blog, that's bare minimum 295 hours I've put into this. in reality it's going to be way way higher than that, but even if you assume I'm only drawing 10 minutes a day for 1771 days and I'm only drawing with no other admin etc, that's only $5.50 an hour, or about $0.93 per drawing.
part of why I don't put in the effort to make it ~profitable~ is because I can't. when my patreon had actual rewards and my commissions were always open and I was still making stickers, that took a ton of energy, and yes it made me a little more money than I'm getting right now, those two years are the period of time the majority of it came from, but it was energy I don't have. I'm disabled, severely chronically ill, and very vocal about it. I don't have a day job to quit because I physically can't do that. but that's also why I can't put in the energy to make this blog a ~business~, and even when I was putting in more energy than I actually had, it was not exactly big returns. I think the biggest most profitable year was like. $800. for the whole year. I made 5 times that doing data entry for a couple hours a week before that company shut down the same year, and the data entry was easier.
so okay, I'm not doing it for the money. (money sure would be nice to have, and I appreciate the patrons who stick around just cuz and the commissions that got picked up this week, but clearly that's not my motivation because there's not much money in running this blog.) then why should I bother?
because making stuff is fun. I get to draw silly little things that make me happy and sometimes other people like them too. that's it. what's the harm in that?

on my Barbara Gordon shit again.
DC needs to hire disabled writers for her
they do realize that a standard wheelchair is dangerous for someone with a spinal injury to use right???
Bab's would be such a good mayor for Gotham. Barbara Gordon for mayor.
What tf was with her making a joke about getting fridged in that one comic
Green is her color, that's all
Her og Batgirl suit was the only good one she's had
Stop trying to make her Batgirl again she is a grown woman, who is far past thst part in her life
DC does realize how important she is for disabled rep right? Looks like they don't twith that whole spinal chip plot.
I feel like she could be a novelist

Like, literally all of them? Go fuck yourself?
"Less representation than Gravity Falls..."
Tumblr media
So...
Tumblr media
I guess all of the crippled queer kids are just going to have to be okay with Tyrone (strangely appropriative and fetishistic name for the disfigured clone of your 13 y/o white boy character) happily exclaiming something like how he's apparently "Better Off Dead!" when he gets a soda poured on him and destroyed, huh? Oh Wait! I forgot.. That was Paper-Jam Dipper!
Nope. I think crippled queer kids would much rather appreciate Toby and Minty being there just fine. After all, I think that it must be the first time we've ever seen any visible wheelchair users in a Queer Coded Disney Show since Kim Possible. Let alone this queer coded and let alone twice. And they're two separate characters existing at the same time and their presence doesn't even revolve around teaching anyone anything! They're just ALLOWED to EXIST!
Didn't see anything like this in Grabbity Balls though, did see a stereotypical man-ish little girl with a big, deep man-ish voice be implied to have "something wrong with her" by an adult authority figure character who's voiced by the same straight, white, openly anti-black Canadian man that you all have been heralding as the ultimate alley for your fictional LGBTQ+ Cartoon Characters' rights, for some reason.
At least the Star Crew tried to give us this:
Tumblr media
Which in my opinion was a bit more forwarded and impactful than some dude bro frat boy "love guru" type character just wearing a bunch of symbols and ornaments around his neck, even if they both didn't get through the censors ... You all know this is way more explicit than that.
Speaking of in your face and explicit Queer Coding:
Tumblr media
Golly gee... I wonder why such cute and beefy but shy Little Leather Monster Complete with his own Harness and what appears to be a Gimp Mask just had to be regulated to the back?! So funny how Daron Nefcy literally said Disabled Rights, Trans Rights, and Leather/Kinkster Rights while Alex Hirsch only said Eugenics, "Trans Rights" (if you can pass to him, if he can pronounce your name, and you don't say "bae" ) and of course, let's not forget Cops at Pride, despite how little they could apparently both get away with... :)
... But of course, the last and most important Queer Reading to me in Star vs. :
Tumblr media
The whole idea of being forced to be with someone you don't love to the point where you have to take a Secret Lover and elope with them and preserve your own sanity because you're a"Bad Girl" who likes a lot of dirty, kinky things to the point where your own voice actress is herself an open kinkster who likes dirty kinky things and that shows through her fun performance, as well as the canonical writings of this kinky character.
Tumblr media
And we're not even getting into all of the WAM and Food Fetish stuff in Star vs. The Forces of Evil but it's there, and it's 'glorious'
And after the show is over ,like the actual Queen of Darkness you are, you gotta go sue your old washed up has-been rock star ex boyfriend for misusing the forces of what he says is kink to abuse you ... Because kink is great actually and he's just evil.
Anyway, Esmé Bianco is amazing.
Don't even get me started on Meteora and the blatant disrespect. Especially after Jessica Walter's passing.
I'm writing this post because I'm just ... So fucking sick of people shitting all over the wonderful representation that Star vs. was able to even achieve in favor of praising Alex Hirsch, every time... When in reality, Star vs. The Forces of Evil has overall better representation and overt, and, as some have even said, both in out the show, literally abject Queerness in it than Hirsch will ever have in whichever eye y'all tried to put the eye-patch on your sexy twink Bill Ciphers only to have Hirsch shit on all that and immediately "fix it" by redesigning it as some disfigured ablest caricature before literally switching over to yet another anti-black one.
Dana broke up with Hirsch for a reason: He's a jerk!
If you think that Daron didn't do a "queer enough" narrative with Star vs. despite it being so by it's nature since day one, despite that being already being promised by it's very nature in it's influence being Sailor Moon and Scott Pilgrim, and if you read the Book of Spells even and still say shit like: "I don't see how Star vs. is QUEER????"
Then like, I'm sorry you can't look a little deeper to find that queerness already everywhere in the narrative all around you and if you actually think that Alex Hirsch ever did Representation TM better than Daron Nefcy, all I can say is that I'm sorry you're like a misogynist with shit taste in men and I'm so glad Dana Terrace is free from her shitty boyfriends shadow now at least.
Saying something even more petty about this because I'm gay: A giant, "Size Shifting", People Eating, Purple Pussy Monster who spends his time in mostly just booty shorts, his Chocolate Fountain Jumping Wife who orgasms when she eats candy and left her arranged marriage so that could have more orgasms, and their Giantess, Purple Pussy Monster of a daughter who sucks the souls out of people and spent most of her life as the Milfier than her own Mom, Terrifying Headmistress of a reform school, where she sucked the life of her own students in a Bathory-uqse fashion, before blowing up her cyborg simp, with his own heart, then probably being able to use the severed arm of her Lizard Cyborg Ex Boyfriend as a make-shift dildo to get a final wank in before ultimately experiencing a growth spurt, losing her mind, and killing everyone ... Will always be more Queer in their very nature, than a floating stale dorito in a top hat and two "gay" cops that are designed to be classicist, racist stereotypes for the sake of the unspoken running "joke" that they could even get along, ever were...
And again... If you're an adult and 'Star Vs.' still isn't enough for you... Then maybe you should STOP looking to cartoons and Disney for your ideal representation and make your own...
I'm done.

Doctor Who
I may be back on the Doctor Who train with the recent Star Beast episode, y'all. Russel T Davies's trademark chaos and alien in the family living room chaos and absurd logic and emotions all mixed together that somehow all make sense in the end, with a "TRANS RIGHTS NOW" bullhorning directly at UK TERFS? You might as well serve up chocolate dipped almonds and ask if I want any.
Also some emotional h/c too I'd argue (did you see that reunion between David-Tennant-Fourteen and Donna? Do you seeee the arguably imperfect language around gender but supportive scripting and love for Rose Noble?).
And a little whump sprinkled in, in this ep. I predict more in the next two eps, because it's RTD and David Tennant, and have you see the entire run of the Ten era and also Casanova between these two? (and also Tennant and Broadchurch) These two are like "whump and H/C yes".
Other notes:
I did like Thirteen as a character. The writing of the eps under Chibnall never stuck with me, but I still am fond of Thirteen and it would be nice to see her pop in again in the future with time travel schenanigans.
Curious to see what Ncuti-Gatwa-Fourteenwill be be like with RTD. (Fifteen? I'm sort of assuming DT-Fourteen is temporal and NG-Fourteen is still Fourteen? IDK.) Will RTD write a Black character with any measure of Okay-ness. Like not being uncomfortably racist about it. ...Questionable, somewhat, IMO. RTD is a white gay man and he's written PoC wierdly before. But in this ep, RTD did come out swinging for trans stuff with a full heart, and he got the wheelchair user POV right too, according to internet reaction perusing. So RTD might have writing staff that will set him on course and/or he might have leveled up in the past dozen something years.
Will RTD go full whump with Fourteen: you know what, I think so, given RTD's track record. But also, a key component IMO, is wether Ncuti Gatwa is ALSO on board with this, and enjoys playing whump. Again, if you've watched interviews with DT about Doctor Who, you can see that DT is just leaning into this. DT says stuff like "I am playing a character who is sick in bed, other people are worried about me, I having a great time being unconscious" or "Then my character stands in the rain". This man gets it.
Anyway - Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor Who, just from glimpses of how DT-Fourteen is different from Ten, could to be softer and more open. I want to note that is prime "precious cinnamon roll" possibility, in terms of whump and hurt comfort theory*.
(*I am making this up, but also you know what i mean.)
But how will whumping a Black Doctor Who be, compared to the "default" White British Man (ie Ten)? Well, my view is: hopefully we will finally have more PoC being able to play in the whump and h/c game. Which, it IS a game - fictional characters get the attention and catharsis and pain and such, that makes up hurt comfort and whump. And to have that limited to the realm of White Men is severely lacking. (My concern, as noted, is wether RTD can handle writing Ncuti Gatwa's character being Black and doing an okay job of it, which still does fold into all of this.)

About me & my blog
Hello everybody, consider this my intro post. I just wanted to say hi and give you an idea what I plan my blog to be about.
I don't have an online nickname but if you need a name to refer to me, you can just make one up based on my url. My pronouns are she/her but it doesn't really matter to me if you use those or any other. As long as it's clear you mean me (and you're not trying to insult me), I don't really care.
I'm in my twenties and I am disabled. I'm not gonna give you a diagnosis but my disability is physical and visible. Among other things, I am a full-time wheelchair user. Of course that influences how I see the world and part of my blog will be about that.
However, I plan my blog to be mostly about aromanticism. I currently identify as aro (though I'm not completely done with questioning). I don't use the SAM right now because I don't really know my sexuality and I couldn't care less about it. I'm not out to anyone irl so I don't have anybody to talk about aro issues except on the internet. That is the reason I joined tumblr, to find a community here (plus I heard y'all are really nice so...)
Anyways, that's it folks. I hope y'all like what I post (it's probably mostly gonna be reblogs).

So tired of people not understanding that neurodivergence can make you visibly disabled. Yes, including autism and ADHD.
So tired of people acting like ableists abuse us on the basis of physical disability and not either visible disability or not meeting abled standards while invisibly disabled.
It really is about inability to conform to abled hegemony. Someone made a brilliant post about that (if this was you, PLEASE let me know so I can give you credit!!) and it's so true.
Went into the notes of a post to find someone (physically disabled + ND) calling other physically disabled ND people able-bodied for daring to mention ADHD on a post that was "originally about physical disabilities" when in their OWN reblog they said it was originally about schizo-spec and plural stuff!!
Like yeah obviously ND people can be ableist towards physically disabled people bb, they're being a perfect example! They're literally a doubly disabled person being ableist to other doubly disabled people! I swear, if I see another disabled person of ANY kind acting like it's impossible for them to be ableist I'll scream!
It's just like... yeah, the type of abuse changes if you're invisibly disabled or visibly disabled but no, neurodivergence doesn't mean you can't ever experience the types of ableism these people claim are unique to physically disabled people. Because, get this, neurodivergence can be visible, it can be physically disabling, and also, SANISM targets visibly disabled neurodivergent people in basically the EXACT SAME WAY as PHYSICAL ABLEISM does visibly physically disabled people.
Not to mention, most bigots are not actually able to TELL which is which, because they're UTTERLY ignorant about disability - you know, one of the FEATURES of ableism?? Or do you think schizophrenic people get called cripples and wheelchair users get the fucking r slur slung at them as some kind of "clever" ableist subversion?
Honestly, before I went into the notes that post had very good points! Even something reblogged by OP literally about ADHD/autism that WASN'T ableist, which is what makes this so frustrating. I'm only vaguing because this is me processing, I've blocked that OP and don't wanna invite harassment to them or anything either, just like...
(Never mind that I also quite literally can't separate my physical disabilities and neurodivergence ones. That's always what's truly upsetting to me. Mine are two trunks that merged seamlessly into one tree a ways back down. You CANNOT say I'm facing ableism for only my physical visible disabilities when... it's always both. There is no one or the other. They're so interconnected that if one is causing me to face bigotry, the other is too by default.)
PS I hate people acting like low support needs high masking tiktok autism/ADHD is the only kind that exists - or that even those people are the true violently ableist oppressors. Like there's a term you should learn, it's called "lateral aggression", because get this, ABLEDS are our real oppressors, wow!
PPS I'm gonna start fucking calling them neurodisabilities instead of neurodivergences because y'all seem to fucking forget that neurodivergence can be disabled (and just as fucking disabling as physical disabilities. some of y'all will bring up severe neurodevelopmental disabilities in order to justify eugenicist ableism then conveniently forget about it when you're trying to win oppression olympics).
PPPS if this post applies to you, read the banner below and suck a dick, cunt shits!

Late night moment of honesty:
I have a lot of, uh, conflicted feelings about when people costume Matt Murdock with an approximation of his cane. Now, as a sighted person, I can in no way speak for what people who use those canes do or don't feel about that - but I know how I feel when people use mobility aids for a cosplay (as in, just for that - it's not something they normally use), and that feeling is...bad. It's a bad feeling.
My wheelchair and cane allow me to do just about anything that involves not lying in bed. I'd be totally housebound without them. I love them for that: they gave me back the world. So many think of something like a wheelchair as a prison, but it's freedom.
That doesn't change the fact that I need them, though. Or the fact that the inaccessibility of our world - often, unfortunately, including spaces that claim to be accessible - make using those aids difficult, especially my wheelchair. Anyone who claims someone would use one like some kind of perk, that they're 'faking' it for some perceived convenience, has never experienced the sheer shitshow it can be to actually use one. It goes so far beyond inconvenience, not to mention things like prejudice and people who like to make people like me into inspiration porn.
So when someone uses something like that for a cosplay, which they can then discard at the end of the day with the rest of the costume...
It's hard to describe. The right words are failing me at the moment. But it's definitely a negative experience for me, and I've heard the same from many other wheelchair users.
Does that feeling extend to those specific canes and the people who have need of them? I don't know. But I know that I, along with many in the disability community, don't like when people cosplay your disability. Which is really what it is - even when the cosplay is of a disabled character, it's still cosplaying a disability when you include those elements (like the cane).
Do all disabled people feel that way about it? Probably not. Does that make it okay, though?
I don't see many people talk about the experience of disability in Daredevil meta who do so specifically from the viewpoint of being disabled. Of course, some of them could be disabled - I don't know if they are, and they certainly don't owe anyone their experiences or what amounts to private medical information. But I started speaking publicly about my experiences as a disabled person some years ago, so I'm down with doing it in this context. It's something I've found a certain level of comfort doing, so I may as well.
Again, I can't speak for anyone in the visually impaired community. I have no business doing it. I can only speak to a more generalized experience as someone who navigates the world as a disabled person, both invisible disability when I was younger and visible in recent years. Just figured I'd...throw that out there.
And now I'm gonna hit y'all with some links 🔥

Hi y'all! Welcome to my brand-new author blog! I figured I needed one now that Twitter is imploding and I was NOT going to promote my books on the same account where I post pictures of manatees and argue with strangers about which of the brothers from Supernatural would win at Twister. (Sam. It's definitely Sam.)
So hi! I'm the author of The Lumbering Giants of Windy Pines, forthcoming from HMH. It's a spooky MG novel featuring a loner, tomboy wheelchair user heroine; a missing mom; a ghost-obsessed neighbor; a tiny, fairly useless, and possibly imaginary Yiddish dragon; and the scary woods full of soul-draining demons they have to brave to save Mama and their town.
I'm also working on a new book and excited to talk about that! There will probably also occasionally still be manatee pictures. I'm glad you're here.
Love, Gabe
