Thanksvember Master Post

Day 1 - Like Coming Home - It has a super rare “wholesome plot twist”! Without spoiling anything too huge, I really like that @julesherondalex took the time to talk about how important it is to take care of yourself first. You can’t love someone else properly, the way they deserve, if you don’t have that same love for yourself. I wasn’t expecting the heartbreaking scene, but the beautiful way in which that topic was was approached neither took away from the story or the joy.

Day 2 - Must Love Dogs - An incredibly fluffy (literally) fic that I loved reading. @rosehallshadowsinger did a really great job weaving Azriel and Elain’s canon personalities into this adorable AU scenario. It is obvious @rosehallshadowsinger took care to create believable personalities for two characters that didn’t get POVs in the books.

Day 3 - Striking Matches - I have to say that I wasn’t at all attracted to an AU fic about firefighters. I was also not a big Rowaelin fan before that, but I was work procrastinating so I gave it a try. Wellll, 30 parts later, I found myself delighted at the writing and sad it was over. I couldn’t believe how well @shyvioletcat cat was able to entirely re-characterize these two into such a different setting, yet still retaining what made them popular in the books. Aelin was perfect in her role as a snarky schoolteacher irritating the stoic firefighter Rowan. And the descriptions of the kids lining up at the firehouse demonstration and Jake’s adorable prodding was icing on the cake.

Day 4 - Close Quarters - I really loved the way @lady-therion wrote Nesta in this modern AU. I particularly like how she equates Nesta’s sometimes standoffish attitude as a very relatable personality trait. She has trouble reading people and gauging situations. It’s well written and the dialogue is unique for a plot that is common in ff!

Day 5 - Like A Lonely House - It’s got a colossal I love Lucy level misunderstanding mixed in with a lot of tension and angst. This Nesta that is full of sacrifice and duty and fire is how I imagine the Nesta who feels that she has a stake in the Fae world would be like. @featherymalignancy wove such a captivating new world in Macar, that it felt a lot like being introduced to the 8th court in the ACOTAR world.

Day 6 - Death Dance - There are several takes out there that touch on Nesta in the Ilyrian camps, but I love how @thewayshedreamed interpreted Nesta’s skills on the battlefield as a calculated dance. Nesta has always been a raging storm, but I love how @thewayshedreamed took care to show us a Nesta that channeled that storm into discipline. If SJM never intended to release a Nessian focused book, I would have considered this a satisfying end to their story.

Day 7 - One Night Standards - I love the way @sassyhobbits writes Aelin with her typical extremely sassy exterior, but also made sure to saddle her with a vulnerable side that runs deep. I normally don’t care for slow burns, but I like the pace of her relationship with Rowan here, and that they had to work hard at it. I also like the plot lines that involved their PR stunts and how the public grew to love them as well.

Day 8 - Goose Chasing - Its the most absurd plot of any fanfic I’ve read! The title is not figurative. Its really does involve chasing a goose. @rhysismydaddy did a fantastic job encapsulating the spirit of silly Cassian and grumpy Nesta in a situation they’d likely never find themselves in, yet making it entirely believable.

Day 9 - Manon Chooses The Worst Babysitter Possible - It’s such a casual and fluffy and hilarious read. It was fun to read about a softer and more delicate Manon. Through this absurd mistake, @sarah-bae-maas did an excellent job really humanizing Manon and postulating a fun in-world domestic scenario.

Day 10 - My Hunger Knows No Bounds - @perseusannabeth manages to take a simple concept and weave a sweet narrative. I particularly love how @perseusannabeth incorporated her personal details into it and took the time to share her lovely culture with us.

Day 11 - Knowing me, Knowing you - We never got to actually see Aelin rule Terrasen (well we got a tinyyy bit) in the books. Though this was modern day, @nalgenewhore tells a fun story of what that could have been like.

Day 12 - Forever (is a long time) - @noodlecatposts takes Elide and Lorcan’s completely polar opposite personalities and spins an interesting (and frankly quite adorable) story. All the rules crack me up. My favorite Lorcan is the one that reminds me of Luke Danes from Gilmore Girls. Currently, he is in the middle of grumpily fixing up her flooded room, so I am sure that my favorite parts are yet to come.

Day 13 - Go Your Own Way - I appreciate @tomtenadia for putting to words a scene that I desperately wanted in ACOWAR or even ACOFAS. A lovely parallel to an equally lovely Fleetwood mac song.

Day 14 - In Which She Makes A Friend - It is no surprise that the fandom wants Nesta to find her place in the Illyrian mountains and even bring about some social change with the female warriors. But the way @bookstantrash got there was such a wonderful and endearing journey. Big fan of the callbacks to how Kaelin was treated and the similarities to a certain Illyrian warrior was when he was younger. We got to see a sweet Nesta, who I’d like to think was attempting to make up for some of her regrets through taking care of Kaelin.

Day 15 - The Ranch - As a huge fan of Sweet Home Alabama, its should be no surprise that I loved this fic by @tacmc . I enjoyed the slow change that we saw in a stubborn Nesta as she opened up to this new way of life and reconnected with her sisters and found a home with Cassian.

Day 16 - Felons - Such a unique interpretation of Nesta and Cassian. I really like the self-sacrificing Nesta angle and @rhysismydaddy did a great job weaving intrigue into the unraveling of what we knew to be a her innocence. I never read The Witness, but this really made me want to.

Day 17 - Of Books and Timber - Cassian offers to build a shelf for Nesta. The way @duskandstarlight goes through the entire range of emotions through Nesta is brilliant. She starts out with cold indifference, but by the end, we get from her a sweet and tender gesture of gratitude. Showing that meeting each other halfway with small gestures is all they ever needed.

Day 18 - You Should Sleep In My Bed More Often - I absolutely loved this quick exchange between Nesta and Cassian after she accidentally injures him. I can’t believe how much I laughed out loud when Cassian said “I need you to protect me closer”. @charincharge perfectly captured the teasing childish essence of Cassian and Nesta’s hilarious victim-blaming was so on the nose that I might have thought this was taken right out of ACOSAF.

Day 19 - The Right Swipe - I really enjoyed this take on the inner circle mixed with the super modern online dating plot. I especially love that @redisriding created genuinely realistic characters (body issues, social anxiety etc). Great read!

Day 20 - Goldfish Prompt - What a fun read. I love how frantic and much personality Feyre had here. I love how dedicated to her fish she was, and how that made her super endearing. Cute read from @azrielsiphons

Day 21 - The One With The Snowstorm - What I really like is that Cassian actually says that he is sorry for his part in Nesta’s exile. I am not bitter about it, but it was an interesting turn. They need to meet halfway here and I rarely see it so well written as @joysbell has done here!

Day 22 - Prompt - A lovely and cute and sweet prompt written by @crowsvalentine! I love the ramp up of suspense just to get to the hilarious payoff. Its adorable and worth the quick read.

Day 23 - Fix It - is one by @thewayshedreamed that I love in its simplicity. It’s a small little argument Cassian and Nesta get into, but its still compelling. It’s sweet and super endearing the way the two of them are written and the subtle way they work through it. Great read!

Day 24 - I Do Bad Things To You - The mob angle may have been done before, but I don’t think with as much care and regard that @tswaney17 has been giving it. I how the canon personalities of the characters translate so well into this modern AU. Its very obvious that @tswaney17 has done her research. I especially love all the details around Elain as a surgeon. The story is compelling and well written and every chapter has me wanting more.

Day 25 - Love Her Like She should Be Loved - This is an excellent fic that I really loved. @julemmaes did such a great job translating some of the canon tension from ACOFAS into a modern world. It’s ripe with emotion, drama and quite a bit of heart. I love how earnestly Cassian comes to Nesta’s defense even in the face of going against his entire family. I like the reference to some very real psychological struggles. I think a lot of people can relate to it.

Day 26 - Literally In Love - I really enjoy the subtle mystery that follows this entire journey. I enjoy that @julesherondalex keeps us guessing, while simultaneously weaving a sweet and tender story about two shy teachers and just a slew of mishaps worthy of a Shakespearian drama.

Day 27 - The Shadow Bond - I love Azriel, and this is such a wonderful fic by @radientwings focusing on how his shadows might work. His shadows are the one thing that I am most curious about him in the series, so it was lovely to read such a well written interpretation of them.

Day 28 - Exes and Oh’s - Just a shout out to @highqueenofelfhame for this lovely story about rekindling past love. I like that even though the plot was uncomplicated, the emotions were not. I love that Aelin didn’t have a perfect reason for what she did, but sometimes that is just how things are. This is a story about taking a second chance, whether it’s deserved or not.

Day 29 - Fever - I really love this fic called Fever. I enjoyed how @lady-therion portrayed Nesta. She hit the entire gammut of characteristics (snarky, worried, vulnerable, caring, short-tempered, flirty, you name it!) but it really worked here. I found this nurse Nesta to be endearing and relatable and the dynamic between her and Cassian was very sweet. Just go read the damned thing.

Day 30 - Baby Steps - I really really love this fic. @runesandfaes did such a great job in just so few words to show a really sweet moment between Chaol, Yrene and their daughter learning to walk. I love the parallel back to when Chaol was learning to walk and the cameo of the golden couch. So sweet.

10 question fic writing tag

I was tagged by @jasmiinitee and @astridcontramundum - thank you both so much!

What’s your favourite genre to write?

I mean, I’ve been writing a lot of domestic fluff, and I enjoy that a lot - but I think the bittersweet melancholy stuff is my favorite to write. Out-and-out angst is also good, but I have less of a taste for it recently.I usually write just like, realistic fiction, without a particular genre, and I prefer modern over historic fiction - basically, I suck at setting and it does not often spark joy to write, so the less of it I have to put effort into, the better - BUT (and perhaps contradictory to that statement), I also LOVE writing sci-fi, even though I haven’t in a long time! (My Continuum fics clearly do not count, lol) And I’ve been wanting to try my hand at magical realism/urban fantasy for a long time, so if I ever decide to actually commit to an original project again, it will likely be experimenting with that.

Do you pull inspiration from real life or do you pull things from other books/fanfiction you have read?

I think fanfiction is bound to pull from other fics; the entire point (and magic of it), really, is variations on a theme. I do pull from real life, a lot more than I usually realize at the time! As I’m writing dad!Morse now, I’ve pulled a lot from memories of my own father, the various ways he showed love to my sister and me and our mom, and what he’s admitted was difficult for him in the young family years.

Do you tend to write one-shots, short stories or longer things?

I used to write almost exclusively exclusively short oneshots, though I’ve had trouble more recently with keeping things to a manageable length! I think I like to lie to myself and pretend a new WIP will be short so I don’t talk myself out of writing it. I would say I still write on the shorter side, though, or at least that’s my preference, maybe in the 4-5k range?

Do you prefer writing descriptions or dialogue?

Dialogue!

Favorite fic/book of all time?

Oh, wow, what a question. Favorite book is pretty much impossible, but my two favorite series are Ted Dekker’s Circle series, and Maggie Stiefvater’s Raven Cycle. If I absolutely must choose a single favorite, then Red from the Circle series. Choosing a favorite fic is too hard! (Plus, I’d feel guilty about the ones I left out... But I do reblog recs!)

Favourite trope?

Idiots in love… undercover as married, marriage of convenience, and all variants thereupon… magical, modern, or school AUs… accidental confessions of love… “Character A is the only one who’s allowed to do X without Character B reacting Y”... pretty much all the hurt/comfort… “We accidentally acquired a child, what do we do now”... found family… Oh, there are so many good ones, it’s too hard to choose!

Are you the kind of person to work on more than one WIP?

Yes! I am a happier, more productive writer when I do. Then I can procrastinate one project by switching to another.

How long have you been writing for?

I have been telling stories for literally longer than I can remember; my family always laughs about my little scribbled notes before I could write real words and the way I would babble to myself or whoever would listen as I walked around and played. As soon as I developed written language, I was writing stories. And I found some sort of bitty-baby “fanfiction” (stories set in my favorite fictional universes) from when I was 6 or 7, so yeah, a long time! I set out to write my first book when I was in middle school, and although I lost that notebook, I started what would become my first finished book, a novella titled The Space Between, when I was in 8th or 9th grade. I used to write SO MUCH as a teenager, and then all but stopped in college, so it’s always fun to get back in the writing mood again as an adult.

Do you tend to write in the morning, evening, or afternoon?

Evening. My best writing is usually done 10-midnight on Friday nights. Sometimes I can squeeze in some after work, but even when I have the time, I’m not often in the right headspace. If I can push through The Suffering, I’ll stay up till 2 or 3 Friday-into-Saturday, which is often productive but at the cost of a whole week of being miserably sleepy when I can’t catch up my sleep schedule!

Do you prefer to post and update your WIP chapter by chapter, or do you prefer to wait before your WIP is finished before sharing it?

The ideal for me is being at least halfway done and then posting chapter by chapter. I write out of order, so it’s hard to start posting at the beginning - the beginning doesn’t usually exist until I’m a good way into a project, and I shuffle the order of events around a lot in the early days. That’s actually a lot of the reason why I’ve been posting these TBS continuations as standalone stories, because then I can adjust the order after the fact. But I’m probably going to combine a lot of stuff in “the parenthood collection” into one multichap, so if it isn’t perfectly in order, oh well.

Scrapbook 2021 | Part I

For anyone that’s new to this, this is how I keep track of all of the things I enjoy and/or create throughout the year. I have literally been doing this since I had a livejournal. I think the first one was 2011? Maybe? In which case, woohoo, ten years of scrapbooking!

It’s a nice little snippet of my life and helps to organize my brain.

There are a few tag games I’d been tagged in over the last couple of days so I thought I’d just compile it all into one big post. Thanks to everyone who tagged me! :)

Ten Songs I’ve Been Listening to Lately tagged by @firefeufuego2

1. Wrecking Ball - Miley Cyrus: yes, this is an old one, and I’m not a huge Miley Cyrus fan but I really love this song and I recently got obsessed with it again.

2. Someone to Stay - Vancouver Sleep Clinic: absolutely obsessed with this one! It’s so soft and pleasant to listen to. I actually discovered this song a few years ago and while I liked it, I never really appreciated it at the time. Then I heard it again somewhere recently and fell in love with it completely.

3. Hurricane - Fleurie: this is another one that I never truly appreciated then accidentally heard again and fell in love. I see a pattern here.

4. Us - James Bay: I really love a lot of his songs but this one is my current favorite. I can’t explain it, it just makes me feel really happy when I listen to it.

5. On Fire - Switchfoot: another oldie. I was in love with this song like more than ten years ago, and I still go back to it from time to time.

6. Toss a Coin to Your Witcher: yes, I’m still obsessed with this one. It’s so catchy, impossible not to sing along.

7. Don’t Cry For Me Argentina - Madonna: this one is one of my favorite songs ever, it gives you such a cathartic feeling. Plus it’s one of the inspirations for the novel I’m working on so I listen to it a lot.

8. Apám sírjánál - ByeAlex: this one is a Hungarian song and I don’t listen to a lot of them but I really love this one. The lyrics is about losing your father (the title means “at my father’s grave”) and while thankfully I haven’t experienced that, I did lose my grandfather and it always makes me think of him. It’s really heart-clenching.

9. The Archer - Taylor Swift: possibly my favorite Taylor Swift song ever! I really love the soft melody and the lyrics too. Also, inspiration for an OC.

10. Let You Go - Katie Herzig: I don’t know what to say about this tbh, I just like it and it’s catchy.

Top 3 ships: Well, Rebelcaptain is still number one, it seems like I just can’t let go of them. Other than that, I have a lot of favorites but none I’m particularly obsessed with at the moment. But to name two more: I just finished watching The Boys and I was absolutely in love with the relationship between Frenchie and Kimiko. So pure, so soft. I mean he calls her mon coeur! Loved them. And thirdly, Catra and Adora from She-Ra because they’re always among my top favorites and I really hope this upcoming last season will make them canon.

Last Movie: It was actually TRoS back in December. I don’t watch movies often because I’m not a huge movie person, I prefer TV shows. I do plan to watch Little Women soon though.

Currently Reading: Nothing except fics. I have a bad habit that I only read at school or on the train and since I’ve been home since January, I couldn’t really make myself read anything (which is a shame because I have so many interesting books on my TBR.)

What food are you craving right now: Honestly nothing, I just had coffee. It’s dinner time soon so I could stand to eat something but I don’t particularly crave anything tbh.

- BYDKT has definitely been the hardest one just by the sheer fact that it took me eight years to finish and I was literally two chapters away from finishing it

- I actually have a few prompts left in my inbox but I definitely would still take prompts anyway just so that it'd give me something more to do

What was the best thing about 2018?

- I'm gonna piggyback on Sunny's answer because for sure, the best thing has been befriending fic writers, complaining about procrastination and how hard words can be sometimes, giving/receiving sneak peeks into fics/chapters that haven't been published, sharing fic ideas that really basically start with "what do you think of" or shouting at each other to write something even though we have a gajillion other stories to write as it is. But oh! My favorite thing about befriending other writers is the love fest. I don't know how many conversations I've had with other writers just going like "omg I love your writing you're so gr9" and they're saying similar things right back. It's just so beautiful 😭

What was the worst thing about 2018?

- There really weren't a lot of bad things for me as a writer. Maybe the only really bad thing was not being able to follow through with writing as much as I wanted? But I feel I wrote so much more in 2018 than I ever had in any other year alone so... it's not so terrible lol

Any last thoughts for 2018?

- Good. Let's do more of that.

Keith furrowed his brows. The punishment didn't add up with Matt’s smug look. His face paled as the realization dawned on him. “Just the hat?”

Matt's smirk shifted into an impish grin. “I knew you were a smart one.” He said with a wink, sticking out his hand. “Do we have a bet, then?”

Never one to back down from a challenge, Keith took Matt's hand and pumped it twice with determination. “You're on.”

this is coming two days late. i had it typed up on my computer and i just... forgot to post it? oops. anyway, last week i decided to systemically make my way through the cisco/barry relationship tag on ao3 (though i’m not done) so not only has that significantly lengthened this list but also it’s the first time i’ve read fics from The Flash fandom, even though i’ve religiously followed the tv series since it started in 2014.

Also i am super into Cisco/Barry/Caitlin fics but there are a whole two of them that i could find so if you have any please send them to me, i’m desperate and am going to have to write some of my own to fill the void.

Rules: You can find past weekly rec lists here, and non-list recs in my general fic rec tag. This is stuff I like, and I have a huge bias toward Lance, hurt/comfort, and general fluff, in that order. Gen unless otherwise noted. Please comment on the fics if you read and enjoy them!

A Lonely Mind by Bandity Words: 11,292 (WIP 1/2) Author’s Summary: Lance struggles with depression, choosing to hide his problems, he starts down a dangerous road alone. My Comments: I think I kinda freaked the author by leaving a RIDICULOUSLY long comment on this one. Go read that for my expanded thoughts. But yeah, fave of the list. You remember that post going around not long ago about how healing pods are scary? This fic takes that concept in a FABULOUS direction, and I love it to death.

Starve the Ego, Feed the Soul by Agapostemon Words: 1,595 Author's Summary: “So you want me to spy for you,” Keith observes blandly. “Exactly!” Hunk nods, “Oh, and keep an eye out for food stashes. I wanna know where all my ingredients are going. ”Keith sighs, “Fine, whatever. I’ll spy for you. But only because he’s my brother and I care about him.” My Comments: Really sweet and heart-achey exploration of Keith and Shiro’s relationship, through the scenario of Shiro hoarding food in his room.

Pizza, Pasta and some comfort by SerenePhenix Words: 4,405 Author's Summary: I love taylor_tut’s sickfics to death but the one that really stuck with me was the one about the college AU where Lance appeared on the gang’s doorstep and they all were like “let’s take care of this sick stranger”.I really couldn’t help myself… ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Getting Lance to stop before he can collapse Shiro wonders what can be done to help the poor guy. Besides making sure that his temperature doesn't go through the roof... My Comments: Not long ago, I recced “The Pizza One” as my favorite taylor_tut fic, and here’s a nice long sequel! I love it almost as much as everyone in the fic loves Lance.

Food for Thought by WildWolf25 Words: 9,094 Author's Summary: After a very uncomfortable breakfast his first morning in the Castle of Lions, Ulaz learns that Galra and Earthlings (and Alteans) have some very prominent cultural differences, specifically relating to food. Once they get some misunderstandings cleared up, though, Lance gets a certain idea... My Comments: Crack alert! This is delightful. Gen, but technically NSFW for...reasons. Just read it, if you’re of age.

Stretch the Day by Stratagem Words: 886 Author's Summary: Lance and Hunk hang out with their siblings at a lake and have a nice day where nothing bad happens. Really! My Comments: I’m actually reccing every fic in this series, Voltron Space Family, this one just happened to come up first in my AO3 history because I read it the most recently. But yeah, you should consume everything. This author is SUPER good at child mannerisms, as well character interaction and feels. There’s a story where Shiro is rescued after the end of Season 2 by a misfit band of space pirates including one Matt Holt, and another where the Galra kidnap Lance and Hunk’s siblings, which is heart-rending. Very, very good stuff. I’ll be following this author with eager anticipation.

Distance by nawsies Words: 1,381 Author's Summary: Pidge misses her Mum so much and most of the time she refuses to think about it, Lance is in the right place at the right time and wants to help his friend (he helps). My Comments: Sweet, achey, homesick Lance and Pidge. Beautiful little fic.

Mermaid Rescue and Rehab Inc. by isabeau25 Words: 1,064 Author's Summary: Sadly, this isn’t the strangest phone call Pidge has ever gotten from Lance. The mermaid is new though. My Comments: MERBABY SHIRO RESCUED BY THE GARRISON TRIO. If that doesn’t make you want to read it I don’t know what will. Just go. It’s great.

Voltron Hug Collection by hufflepirate Words: 12,761 Author's Summary: 15 microfics, minifics, or oneshots featuring Voltron hugs. These were written based on tumblr prompts (plus 2) and to get me through finals week. Every chapter involves at least one hug, all hugs are platonic, and chapter titles will tell you the people involved and some idea of the plot or prompt, so keep an eye out for those. My Comments: I’ve been reblogging these fics in their tumblr post form, because they are all amazing, but if you missed any, here they are all handily collected for your convenience! I intend to comment on every single chapter, just haven’t gotten to it yet.

One Day at a Time by dem_hips Words: 2,818 Author's Summary: Being away from home at school is a little different from being away from home defending the universe, as it turns out. My Comments: Kind, supportive Garrison Trio. They’re all so very far away from home. Another fic where Pidge and Lance level up their friendship. I love it.

Caught in the Rain by WildWolf25 Words: 3,611 Author's Summary: “Hi, um, do you need help with your… robot car?”Pidge looked up to find a man looking down in bemusement at them. His black hair was cropped close to his head, shorter at the undercut and only slightly longer on top, save for a white-dyed tuft that fell over his forehead. “It’s a rendition of the Mars Rover, but ‘robot car’ works too.” Pidge said. “And I’m okay, I just need to dry it off. My teammates are delayed, so I just need somewhere out of the rain to wait for them. Sorry about using your awning.” (While waiting for their robotics club members, Pidge gets caught in the rain and takes refuge in the lobby of an onsen, where they meet Shiro) My Comments: This is such a warm, gentle, relaxing fic, much like I imagine an onsen visit to be. Love this modern version of Pidge and Shiro, with Lance being a disaster and Hunk being a suspicious mechanic, as it should be.

Heathens by TheCookieMonster77 Words: 8,785 Author's Summary: "You…"Keith looked completely bewildered and lost at Lance's outburst and Lance thought that that was probably the worst part of all of this. The heathen didn't even realize his error.Keith's face looked startlingly close to a kicked puppy. "What did I do?""I- You-" Lance let out a muffled shriek shout of irritation. "You," he growled, jaw clenched and teeth grinding, "just asked for pineapple. On pizza."What. An. Out. Rage.Keith blinked. Six times Coran took care of his kids and one time they returned the favor. My Comments: SO CUTE. I love the way Coran takes care of all of these children he’s suddenly stuck with. The different scenarios are all very good and fitting, and I’m looking forward to more.

Little Drops of Poison by Saereneth for BossToaster (ChaoticReactions) Words: 2,607 Author's Summary: Shiro had been trying to catch up to them, clawing his way through years of separation just to feel like he was part of them once more, but sometimes it was just too much, and he had to excuse himself for a while so he could come to grips with everything he’d missed. My Comments: @bosstoaster‘s Ten Years On AU bothers me on a very visceral level that I have trouble articulating, but this little exploration in the sandbox is lovely. I love Pidge unable to stick with her original concept and expanding into thing she finds interesting or just pretty, and the way Lance notices Shiro spiraling and subtly grounds him without being flashy is really lovely characterization. Very believable development of both of them, and Shiro is heartbreaking as always, but everyone’s going to take care of him.

Be Water, My Friend by xLoLix Words: 8,531 Author's Summary: So there are the quieter moments between missions, between exciting events, between the moments that matter. (The real secret are that those are the moments that matter the most.)Here are some moments between the paladins, starring Lance.Or; I air out some of my general grievances and de-stress from school by writing a fic about my favourite character. My Comments: Really lovely exploration of Lance and his relationships. I enjoyed it.

Finding Family by squirenonny Words: 17,214 Author's Summary: A collection of drabbles that don't fit neatly into the main Duality plotline. Most can be read independently of the main story, though each entry contains a note on where it fits in the timeline.Written based on prompts from readers. My Comments: Some mild Klance and Shatt. Every single of one of these is delightful. You should just read everything this author writes. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.

1: What inspired you to write the fic this way?When I first started hanging out in the fandom I had lots of theories about potential relationship structures DnP might be in that were way more complicated than “they’re together and closeted”. This was one of those theories.

2: What scene did you first put down?Dan creating the wedding invite.3: What's your favorite line of narration?Literally any moment where Dan’s like “this is fine. this is fine. i’ll just pretend i’m not in love with him!”. Because girl, what?

4: What's your favorite line of dialogue?There’s like...not a lot of dialogue in this fic? Proportionately? But for someone that doesn’t do humour that well, I think this is pretty funny. C

Dan drags a hand through his hair. “Ok. Um. Shit, do I care that they know?”

He glances at Phil, who’s nonplussed enough to go back to whatever he was doing on his computer. “Phil! Do we care?”

“Care about what?” Phil asks, looking up and pushing his glasses back onto the bridge of his knows. Dan just wants to crawl back into bed with him, honestly. “Oh no, stress quiff.”

“That they know,” Dan says, gesturing to the phone with his other hand. “Fuck the stress quiff.”

“That we have sex?” Phil shrugs. “I thought they all already knew. Also, you remember that time you accidentally got jizz everywhere and we fell asleep and my hair was all weird in the morning? I don’t think I should fuck the stress quiff, Dan.”

“Wow, so they probably also hear that,” Dan says, distressed. “They know we’re fucking and that you’re a fucking oddball.”

“We knew that already,” Louise’s tinny voice says from the phone. “Not the sex thing. The other thing.”

Dan takes a deep breath and focuses on the phone. “Louise. You’re allowed to talk about the sex thing but just with the people you’re with right now. I don’t want this all over youtube. And don’t talk about the other thing at all.”

“The jizz in the hair thing?” Louise asks.

Dan closes his eyes. “Well, it’s too late if I was talking about that. No. The,” he lowers his voice. “the love thing.”

5: What part was hardest to write?Keeping them from just talking about their feelings and getting together, or not, too soon. Because its not a miscommunication fic. Its a fic about people keeping things from each other out of fear, and out of obtuseness, when it would be so much easier (but a much shorter story) to just let them talk and decide if they’re going to date or not. I had to lean super hard on Dan being like, ok but what if he’s not in love with me, despite it being really, really obvious that Phil was. I still think that part is one of the weakest parts of the fic.

6: What makes this fic special or different from all your other fics?It’s the longest thing I’ve written and posted and will be until my PBB. 7: Where did the title come from?From Denitia and Sene’s song Because We Are Fools. That alternate title is also from that song “Why Do We Fall in Love”As for the chapter titles: ch 1 - Frank Ocean - Ivy, ch 2 - Trampled by Turtles - Midnight on the Interstate, ch 3 - The Front Bottoms - Peach, ch 4 - Iron&Wine/The Talking Heads - This Must be the Place, ch 5 - ...i actually have no idea.8: Did any real people or events inspire any part of it?Well I mean. DnP and the other youtubers and TATINOF.9: Were there any alternate versions of this fic?Not really. There were versions where they got together sooner. 10: Why did you choose this pairing for this particular story?I hadn’t yet pledged my allegiance to kickthefire.11: What do you like best about this fic?I have a lot of affection for Fools! It’s the second fic I posted ever and ended up being 20k, like bitch what kind of confidence? I think its an interesting story to read from my perspective because there’s a lot of things I did in this fic that I’d never do again, and some stuff that pops up pretty often.12: What do you like least about this fic?Ok, so I actually don’t think Fools is that good of a fic? I don’t think the characterization holds up all that well (admittedly I feel like DnP have been very open with us in 2017 and I was like, brand new to fandom when I wrote this) and ultimately I think the way I dealt with the “will they, won’t they” is actually a pretty weak narrative. Like there wasn’t enough conflict to warrant the word count.

Also its unbeta’d which means that whenever I try to reread it, I always end up wanting to go in and fix all the errors.13:What music did you listen to, if any, to get in the mood for writing this story? 1: What inspired you to write the fic this way?I was going through a big big queer punk phase at the time and I find fandom’s depiction of punks to be interesting but not really accurate to my interactions with folks who identify as punk/experience identifying as a punk(....?). A lot of it was also that I was into a queer punk band that was just about to break it big on the mainstream so I was thinking a lot about what it means to be a “sell out”. They ended up not doing so, but that was a big influence.

2: What scene did you first put down?The image of Dan and Alex talking about being sellouts while Alex gets a tattoo. I don’t tend to write stories very out of order.

3: What's your favorite line of narration?I think Dan being really aggressively protective of his identity. I know that I’m constantly on high alert for misgendering and people being even a little weird about trans and gender nonconforming people and, when it happens, immediately being like nope, you’re cancelled, we hate you now. So that felt super true to life (except the part where Phil immediately picks up on it and apologizes. That’s generally not how that part goes, unfortunately).4:What's your favorite line of dialogue?So, context, Dan’s a trans dude and he and some OCs are in a punk band that’s just about to break into the mainstream.

When they finish, he tilts his head. “So, I take it there’ve been a lot of pregnancy scares among the band?”

Alex glances at Dan, who nods almost imperceptibly, and says. “Nope, just Dan.”

“Yeah?” Phil asks, turning to look at Dan.

Dan shrugs. “Before T, yeah. They knew me pretty well at the clinic. ‘s why I went off dick for a while.”

“Yeah, you did,” Alex says, winking at him.

“Huh,” Phil says, and Dan knows that voice. That is the voice of “I was interested in you, but then figured out what your deal was below the belt”.

Dan fucking hates that voice.

Alex seems to pick up on it, juts their chin out a little. “We’re not afraid to talk about queer shit, or trans shit. Dan writes our lyrics, and that’s his life. If I was writing them, I’d probably write about genderqueer shit. Lalala fuck you, I’m not a ma’am.”

5: What part was hardest to write?Probably the opening tattoo scene just because I knew it was going to be a shortish piece, so I had to get the exposition of the whole AU, where the band was, what the relationship between Dan and Alex was all in that first scene.6: What makes this fic special or different from all your other fics?It’s probably the one that’s most of me? Like I have a lot of tattoos, I have exes I’m friends with, I go to a lot of shows and sometimes identify as punk, I’m genderqueer, I use they/them pronouns, I wanted to be a music journalist for years, I was listening to the bands that wrote the songs I lifted for this fictional band. I wouldn’t say its the most personal thing I’ve written (that’s everybody told me it was bad to do), but it was the most things lifted from my life.7: Where did the title come from?90% sure it’s a modification on Priests’ amazing song Modern Love / No Weapon, which is my favorite song of theirs, holy shit.8: Did any real people or events inspire any part of it?Yeah. Like I said above, I was super into this queer punk band that was about to break into the mainstream and of course had lots of people talking about whether they were sell outs or not. They didn’t break the scene because of some stuff, and I’m glad that stuff happened and the scene turned their backs on the band, but there’s a real sense of wow, we really could have had it all. But that’s all extra stuff that happened long after this fic.9: Were there any alternate versions of this fic?Nah. I think about continuing it out into a proper fic, but its so closely tied with me really falling in love with that band that didn’t break the scene and the reason they didn’t break the scene had to do with one of their members doing something really violent and it just hurts to think about now. And I don’t think I could really extricate the fic from those magical few months of loving that band so. Yeah, furthering it existed in my head but I doubt it’ll ever happen. 10: Why did you choose this pairing for this particular story?So I think its obvious why I chose DnP, but I’ll also say the reason I had Dan be in a band with his ex, an ex who’s also his best friend, is because lol that’s pretty true to what I’ve seen in the queer community. There are only so many of us, even fewer when you start factoring in gender stuff, so its hard to just let go of relationships when you break up.

11: What do you like best about this fic?I think the band is a riot and make a perfect greek chorus for DnP’s budding relationship.12: What do you like least about this fic?That I can’t finish it tbh.13:What music did you listen to, if any, to get in the mood for writing this story?Or if you didn't listen to anything, what do you think readers should listen to to accompany us while reading?

Unsurprisingly, a lot of punk! I listened to a lot of The Front Bottoms, Priests, Ought, Modern Baseball, PUP, Girlpool, Childbirth, Chastity Belt, The Spook School, Ramshackle Glory. And two other bands that I won’t rec, but will say that consent is everything folks, and if you don’t ask for it, you deserve to lose your music career!

14: Is there anything you wanted readers to learn from reading this fic?Uhm. That punk is 1000% fewer spikes than you think and way more people in ripped jeans and bandshirts and sticknpokes singing about their feelings.15: What did you learn from writing this fic?Ugh, that I need more queer punks in my life.

So there was another one of these in my inbox that came in a while ago. I meant to answer it, but kept getting busy…and then accidentally deleted it -_- Then this one came in and I said “alright, that’s a sign, let’s do it.” Also, aww, thanks! :)

I’ve never really made a rec list before–there are a lot of fics I’ve read that I’ve enjoyed, but I’m not sure everyone would enjoy, if you get what I’m saying. So I’m trimming it down to what I think most people can like + some I feel are underappreciated by the fandom or have unique concepts. Also, expect shipping bias from me.

Fire Emblem: With one exception, this is gonna have entirely Awakening and Fates stuff–not because there isn’t great fanfic for the older games (there is), but because I haven’t looked at stuff for them in forever. Also because what I do remember enjoying was posted ages ago and not all of it’s around anymore.

The Mechanist’s Secret Power: A hilarious crack/parody fic that pokes fun at many of Fates’ mechanics and plot holes…while still having some semblance of a plot! In-Progress.

Decruited: Another hilarious crack/parody fic where, after the game has ended, Robin has to fire the Shepherds. He comes up with the most nitpicky of reasons to do so. Complete.

Awkward Moments: Azurrin. A short, cute and funny fic of Corrin and Azura struggling to adjust to married life. Complete.

The Kingdom of Forking Paths: Azurrin. Probably my favorite Conquest rewrite, this handles elements like the supposed revolution, the black-and-white morality, Corrin’s divisive characterization, the royal sisters’ lacking roles, and even the second gen well. Mixes in elements of the Revelation route, too. In-Progress.

Senbonzakura: Post-Conquest, Leo/Sakura. A fantastic romance with great pacing and a careful handling of the apparent consequence-free conquest of Hoshido. Has great worldbuilding and my favorite Sakura voice. It’s just the Leo/Sakura fic to read in my mind. Complete.

The Werdna’s “A Future” series: Okay, that’s just what I call it, the series doens’t have an official title. Robcina. A collection of multi-chapter Awakening fics, following Robin and Lucina’s journey in the aftermath of Grima’s defeat. Eventually crosses over with Fates. Most are complete, latest is In-Progress.

The Pacing of a Story is Also Very Important in a Video Game: Wanted to know what Chrom and Tharja’s supports would look like? Wanted to know what a romance between them would look like? Then this is the fic for you. Technically a dead fic, but it’s a collection of conversations and one-shots rather than one overarching plot, so don’t let that deter you.

Fire Emblem: The Hero of Shadow: Kris/Katerina. FE12 had potential that went nowhere, and there’s not a lot to fix it since it was never released in the west. This fic does, handling Kris’s characterization, skills and relationship with the Seventh Platoon Arc much better than the game did. In-Progress.

To Save a God: Anankos/Mikoto, pre-Fates. A “what-if” fic where Azura’s father survives Anankos’s attack, and thus potentially averts the fall of Valla. Of course, it all depends on whether he can save his friend… I enjoy this one for its rather unique idea. In-Progress.

Dangan Ronpa: I haven’t read any “Fangan Ronpa’s”, so you’ll only see recs with the canon casts here.

Video games and coffee cups: Hinanami, one-shot. Adorable, shameless coffee shop AU. Fluffy to the max, perfect for erasing sadness.

Beta: A Naegiri one-shot where Makoto has a depressing realization about his relationship with Kyoko. Happier than it sounds, promise.

Jack of Spades: Celes-centric, gen, one-shot. Excellent backstory and characterization fic.

It Didn’t All Go to Plan: Mukuro-centric, onesided Naekusaba, implied Naegiri. A look into Mukuro’s mind during the brief time she was alive in the Killing Game and her feelings for Makoto.

Undoing: Sayaka-centric, gen, oneshot. I love Sayaka, but fics about her are sadly rare. This is one of them, a nice look into Sayaka’s head and why she gave Makoto the golden sword that would ultimately screw her over.

Growing Pains: Oneshot, Kuzupeko. Touching and sometimes sad kid fic that deals with Peko struggling to adjust to the role of a mother.

Magical Girl Usami: HNNNNNG. A superhero/magical girl AU, starring tag-team Magical Girl Chiaki (codename Usami) and her partner, detective Kyoko. Hinanami and Naegiri (though the Naegiri was only just starting as of last update). I wish this would update again because it was so good so go read it and encourage the author. In-Progress.

The Insistence of Light: Modern AU (non-Despair and non-Talent, that is), Kuzupeko. A great fic where Peko has to adjust to suddenly losing her purpose in life when she’s fired by the Kuzuryu clan, and slowly comes into her own as a person. Almost complete, it’s just waiting on the epilogue.

Moving Forward: Naegiri, post DR3. A nice, fluffy series of shared oneshots about Makoto and Kyoko’s life after the Final Killing Game. In-Progress.

Hope’s Peak’s Best and Brightest: Non-Despair AU. Follows Class 77 plus Hajime as they deal with their boatload of psychological problems. This’ll swing you all over the place, from laughing to awwing to feeling really, really bad for everyone. In-Progress.

Cute Little Hamsters: Sondam with a side of Hinanami…from Kazuichi’s POV. It works, promise. A multi-chapter fic covering the 77th class’s first year together at Hope’s Peak. It was written before DR3 aired and thus has some details different, so it’s technically AU, but it’s cute, funny, and has a novel concept (again, a shipping fic from an outside POV). Complete.
