When did Iruka become a teacher?

I was making an Iruka timeline and realized we don’t have a clear answer, but rather multiple conflicting ones. So I tried to compile the informations somewhere! Here are some different indications as to when Iruka may have become a teacher at the Academy.

The first basic fact we have is this: Iruka would very probably not have become a teacher before he became a Chūnin, which happened when he was 16 years old (birthday May 26th).

IN THE ANIME/MOVIES :

The Childhood episodes show Iruka teaching Naruto’s generation while they are at a very young age, possibly 5 to 7 (see the “Naruto” and “Shikamaru” episodes). This would make Iruka 15 to 17.

In the movie The Last, Iruka is already a teacher in the Academy flashback. The children in this scene are all 7, making Iruka 17.

In the Rookie Instructor Iruka filler arc, a flashback shows Iruka asking to become an instructor. Kakashi is present in this scene and is already back in the field and in jōnin uniform, meaning this is after he left ANBU, which happened when he was 22-23 years old. Kakashi and Iruka have a 4 years age difference, making Iruka at least 18-19. This is already conflicting with the previous anime appearances.

IN THE MANGA :

There are even less indications in the manga than there are in the anime. At the very least, Iruka was not Sasuke’s first teacher (Sasuke entered the Academy at age 6), although nothing indicates whether he was already a teacher or not.

To me, the only reliable clue is in the flashback of Naruto and Sasuke’s fight at the Academy, supervised by Iruka (which spans over multiple chapters, beginning with Chapter 538 and ending with Chapter 697). The flashback is set post-Uchiha massacre, making the Naruto’s generation at least 7 and Iruka at least 17. I’d say that Naruto’s generation looks around 9-10? (compared to their Naruto Part I selves)

(There is also the fact that in Chapter 1, Iruka seems to have been around for Naruto’s two previous attempts at passing the Genin test, which would suggest he’s been teaching Naruto for at least 2 years. But since that’s already an entire problem in itself -Naruto would be 2 years older than his comrades, unless the exam happens multiple times a year like the Chūnin exam-, I’m not gonna use it.)

IN THE DATABOOKS :

Now okay, this is where I’m gonna sound a little crazy, but I’ve tried to calculate a likely age for Iruka to have become a teacher based on his number of Databook missions. Having become a Chūnin at 16, Iruka couldn’t have done A-rank and B-rank missions before this moment (or only on accident, I guess). Given that he doesn’t take missions during his teacher years (at least up to the Konoha Crush), Iruka’s 74 B-rank and 12 A-rank missions must have mostly been completed in the timeframe between his becoming a Chūnin and his taking up a teaching job. Shikamaru, who we see becoming a Chūnin, completes 9 B-rank and 19 A-rank missions in around 2 and a half years. If we assume A-rank missions take longer to complete (which isn’t at all a given but I’m desperate for clues), this gives Iruka around 3 to 3 and a half years to complete his own total, making him 19-20 when he becomes a teacher.

CONCLUSIONS :

My personal preference would be for Iruka to have been 19 when he became a teacher at the Academy. The first two anime indications can be easily discarded: the Childhood episodes are simply cute filler episodes to end the anime, and the Last movie has more than one inconsistency. Iruka being 19 allows for the Rookie Instructor arc to be partly canon, as well as the manga indications: the Naruto vs Sasuke flashback would happen only 2 years or less after the Uchiha massacre, and Iruka would have been Naruto’s teacher for a total of 3/3 and half years (enough to have an initially strained relationship, then a more understanding one, and for Naruto’s memories from the Academy to be mainly associated with Iruka). This gives Iruka around 3 years on active duty as a Chūnin before retiring, and thus enough time for his ‘empathy’ for the enemy to become a worrying trend, if we take the Rookie Instructor arc as canon.

(Also given that Naruto is 18-19 in The Last when he teaches at the Academy, this seems to be not too weird of an age for someone to start teaching.)

So there you have it! Obviously there is still some weird stuff anime-wise ; Iruka progressively becomes more of a Teacher Archetype throughout Naruto’s story, which explains why he’s often put in anime episodes despite being a literal teenager (yeah Konoha is fucked up about age anyway but even them probably don’t want a 15yo with anger issues to teach their knife-yielding middle schoolers).

i started writing a whole thing about mir and her mom and then i realized i accidentally gave the briadis family the perfect set up for a tragic family empire tv show

#her mom is a powerful merchant who wants to pass the business on to her kids #her oldest brother is being groomed for the job but he’s better at and prefers life as a ship captain #no matter how hard they try to bring him home!#her oldest sister wants the job TOO MUCH and tries to hard but it’s not good at it #and their mom kind of disdains her for it. lol #elaine is smart enough and good enough with people to do it but she’s too soft #and wants to burn the whole thing down bc they sold mir to the order and stopped her sending letters to her #mir’s younger siblings are enjoying traveling as part of a ships crew while they work their way up but i don’t think their mom #has high hopes for them.#ironically given mir’s personality she might have been good at it if she’d been trained!!#and their mom knows this and knew it before she sold mir to the order but she was never going to let a magianis have control of it #which brings me back to the thing that started this: mir’s mom genuinely thought it was best to sell her to the order bc she couldn’t #protect mir from the consequences of being magianis and thought being trained by the order was the best way to keep her safe #and that if they paid for her they would think of her as an investment (merchant brain logic that was also just her pacifiying herself into #thinking it was right. did she actually believe this?? would it have mattered?? well. who can say!)#they do all have names i just can’t off the top of my head remember ahdhdjsk #oc: mirren sero #i need a text post tag #when was the last time i wrote a wall of tags about her…i miss her #i should add. her mom thought it would keep mir safe but also it was a convenient way to get her out of the way. so

an unfortunate fact about me is i just want to be singing all the time

nothing pisses me off more than how figure skating reporters/news will constantly and intentionally leave out important details of stories in order to produce ragebait for people who don’t know anything about figure skating

#like i’m sorry but surya bonaly is NOT the hill you want to die on.#they banned backflips BEFORE SHE WAS EVEN COMPETING because guess what!#USFSA/ISU doesn’t want to deal with skaters breaking their fucking necks and dying on live tv!#or make young skaters feel like they Have To Learn how to do it and then fucking dying because of how INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS it is.#dont get me wrong figure skating is conservative and racist as fuck and surya bonaly faced some pretty horrific racism in her career #but banning the backflip had absolutely nothing to do with her and everything to do about not having skaters fucking die #also i’m not sorry but her edgework fucking sucked. like her jumps were incredible i can’t lie but her edges were. painful to watch at best #see also: everything regarding the sambo 70 and eteri #i am so sick and fucking tired of seeing people who don’t skate just hype up these incredible abused teenagers and hail them like gods #they don’t need fame they need HELP and eteri needs to be in fucking JAIL for what she’s done to SO MANY KIDS #i hope this sport gets more boring!! i hope i see less quads and less teenagers!!#what i want to see is competitive skaters who are still able to skate when they’re 25+ because their training was healthy and genuine #i want to see good technique and clean lutz edges and no full blade assistance on toe jumps bc thats what will save your joints #i want to see skaters with muscle and fat who have healthy relationships w/ food and their bodies and are stronger for it #this sport is so fucked. it’s a joke. i love skating but i wish i never had to interact with the community around it #ESPECIALLY those who have never gone through the sport themselves. stop getting off on abused children and start advocating for SAFETY #rosie speaks

Had a weird stress dream where I tried to show my art at some art thing where my classmates were working and they publicly humiliated me and then there were a series of trains and I was supposed to help my friend at a hospital but I got lost and got on the wrong train . My phone was at 5% the entire time too which made me so stressed. Also most of the dream happened in Poughkeepsie which is on the same Metro north line as town w a gallery I’m waiting to hear back from about a submission. Girl not the omens.

#admittedly I when I normally comb my dreams for symbols they are not so obvious #like obviously the museum where people were doing install—a more prestigious opportunity than the job I’m currently having problems with #also what is my life but a series of trains. also I expected to see that same friend at train station today bc I know he takes that train #to work but he wasn’t there today. but also hospitals and loss and my grandma who’s getting a bunch of tests done on Monday #my phone— pressure loss of security — been worrying a lot about post grad and being able to afford to live when my mom stops helping #with my rent when I graduate. maybe even loss of language and communication? the Poughkeepsie thing is probably obvious.#I’ve never actually stopped there I just like the name so much it’s always stuck in my brain #my slayful traumagirlie dream analysis #hope everyone enjoyed this is getting deleted after I transcribe it into my dream journal in the morning

I have a small birthday celebration planned for today, really just a few people, some cake and pizza and then we're going to an escape room in the late evening, but of course Im So Stressed about it, ughhhh. Im excited too, but my anxiety is having one hell of a field trip rn 😩
