BNHA Chapter 362 Spoilers

It’s been a hot year since I last posted my spoiler thoughts on My Hero Academia, but I need to talk about Chapter 362 because holy shit. Buckle up, ‘cause this is LONG:

I was screaming and internally crying all night last night when I read the summary of this chapter. Bakugo is probably dead. The second main protagonist of this story might be dead. This is probably the most shocking thing I’ve seen in MHA since Deku left UA and Bakugo apologized. Like, I was flabbergasted.

I am still devastated, but I have to give props to Horikoshi for having the titanium balls to even do this. He’s killed off characters in this story before, but this is truly something else. Nighteye, for example, was so, so sad. I cried for his death. Bakugo’s death absolutely stunned me because I never thought Horikoshi would do this.

Also, Horikoshi is a sadistic evil genius for making this the last chapter before holiday break in Japan next week. So basically, Shonen Jump’s on break and we’re not getting chapters of a lot of manga for 2 whole weeks including MHA. Horikoshi straight up left us on Bakugo’s possible death for 2 fucking weeks.

I also wonder how long Horikoshi has been planning this because you know he loves playing the long game.

So, Katsuki Bakugo. Yeah, he looks pretty dead in that last panel. I don’t think he’s perma-dead personally. There’s still some of his quirk going on in his left eye and I doubt Horikoshi would really kill off one of, if not the, best character in his series permanently. Horikoshi also said that Bakugo would have a BIG moment in this final arc and that really hasn’t happen yet. Yeah, that massive cluster was awesome, but it lasted not even half a chapter. Bakugo still has a bigger role to play.

I gotta say, though, putting in that flashback of when Bakugo and Deku got those All Might trading cards and revealing that Bakugo’s been carrying his in his pocket the entire series breaks my heart into a million pieces. He really does idolize All Might and him looking up to his vestige only solidifies that. God, that genuine smile though. I’m ruined, guys.

Also Bakugo still thinking of how he’s going to match IZUKU while on Death’s Door is both so sweet and so devastating.

Now, what’s going to happen to Bakugo from here. Honestly, I don’t know. Again, I don’t think he’s going to die forever, but there’s a few things that could happen:

Eri: We don’t know where she is now, but they could bring her back to Rewind Bakugo’s body to before it got crushed by Shigi/AFO. We don’t know if her Quirk works on dead body’s though.

Bakugo Stays Dead: This would make the manga as a whole so much more somber, but Deku’s reaction would make him lose his shit. I can see him being so sad and angry that he absolutely wrecks so many people without a hint of rational thinking. I don’t like seeing my green son hurt, but it would be really good storytelling and character development if it did happen.

Bakugo is in Limbo and his Spirit is in The Vestige World: This is what I think is happening right now. It’s really, really interesting that Bakugo saw All Might’s vestige before he died. Before, the only living person who witnessed this was Deku. So, why Bakugo?

Connection with OFA: Bakugo did have OFA in the 2nd movie, albeit briefly. I think the 2nd movie is canon, but it’s only been hinted at in the main manga with Nine having a brief appearance. Similar to how Melissa from the 1st movie is hinted at with her inventions being in the main manga. If the 2nd movie is canon, then it would be possible that Bakugo would still have hints OFA still in him and that could bring him to the vestige world. I can’t imagine what it’d be like if Deku found out about Bakugo’s death like THIS.

Relation to the 2nd OFA User: AFO said that Bakugo remind him of the 2nd User. We also had a panel in a previous chapter that compared the two as well. My theory of Bakugo being a decedent of the 2nd User is becoming more true, I think. This would give Bakugo more of a connection to OFA, the Vestige World, and the 2nd User’s Quirk maybe. Maybe that Quirk could bring him to life.

Bottom line: I think Bakugo is dead for now, but he’ll be back. Not sure how or when, but he has to come back. Horikoshi knows that Bakugo is too important of a character to be killed off for pure shock value. Katsuki Bakugo is not done yet.

BnHA Chapter 265: Tamaki What Did You Eat

Previously on BnHA: The heroes began their invasion of the Ol’ Villain Marriott. Down in the basement, Re-Destro was all “what’s going my fresh villain citizens, what a beautiful day, well I guess we should start that meeting” and they were all “WE’RE UNDER FUCKING ATTACK” and he made a face and I laughed. Class 1-B, Edgeshot, and Midnight then jovially killed some people, and then we cut to Dabi and Hawks! Hawks was all “sorry it has to be this way Bubaigawara but I’m gonna have to arrest you” and Twice got all Harry Potter in that one scene from the Prisoner of Azkaban movie, and then he did the thing, and fucking Hawks just fucking stood there and DID NOTHING. So now he’s gonna have to fight 100,000 Twices I guess, and meanwhile Dabi is running up the stairs on his way to intervene and somehow make things even more chaotic. Also either Hawks or Dabi thinks heroes are scum, and I’m still not clear on which. But basically it’s safe to say that angst is on the way, friends.

Today on BnHA: Tamaki turns into a horse. I have questions. Dark Shadow fights fucking Re-Destro and fucking destroys him in like two seconds flat, like holy shit whaaaaat. Then Tokoyami just hops on inside of Fatgum like a goddamn marsupial, and spends several pages like this, during which I completely can’t focus the entire time but I do remember that we learned that Machia won’t be joining the fight because he apparently only listens to Tomura, so that’s convenient I guess. Then we cut to Twice and Hawks (I literally typed out “Dabi and Hawks” just now and had to go back and change it, so you can see where my mind is at), and Hawks defeats Twice and is all “guess I’ve got no choice” and is seriously going to kill him (hahaha what the fuck), but then DABI FUCKING BURNS THE ENTIRE ROOM DOWN WITH EVERYONE IN IT WHILE LAUGHING AND THEN THE CHAPTER JUST ENDS. I feel like I just got slapped in the face.

so before we start, let me just mention that I got a ton of asks and messages about the whole “HERO SCUM” line, and I appreciate everyone keeping me up to date on the twists and turns of our wild little fandom lol. so as you all probably know, in Viz’s translation of the last page they had Dabi saying the line (“Twice, this isn’t your fault. as always... scummy heroes are to blame”). so naturally everyone was either like “whaaaaat!” or “I KNEW IT!!”, but then Caleb went and deleted his original tweet saying that it was Dabi, and replaced it with a new tweet, the gist of which was basically “I don’t fucking know either” and admitting he wasn’t an authority on the matter. so to sum everything up, we basically don’t know and will never know until the anime airs this in about three years’ time, or until the only man who can actually clear this up decides to stop drawing weird mushroom men for five goddamn minutes so he can clarify for us

anyway, so in the meantime it’s time to see who’s having angst this week! probably everybody! let’s just assume it’s everybody and save some time

ohooo so we finally get to see why they had Tamaki and Tokoyami in the vanguard, eh?

(ETA: gotta say, “you” is an awfully impersonal way to address someone whose entire body you are shortly going to stuff inside your little quirk papoose and tote around like a fanny pack.)

honestly this isn’t much of a mystery though lol. Tokoyami is obvious, and with Tamaki it’s probably because of his kraken thing if I had to guess

Mister Gum, sir. please do not tell me you are actually about to lead these children into the building and down into the basement. first of all the thought of you and Tamaki in yet another basement is already giving me PTSD so no thanks. and second of all, ???!?!?!?!?! [gestures incredulously to the two children] ?!?!?!???? [emphatically taps my computer screen with the wiki page showing their respective ages] ???!?!?!?!?!?! [gestures wildly toward a picture of Gigantomachia I pulled up just now in a google search. yeah that’s right. Gigantomachia!! you all forgot about him didn’t you!! well guess who didn’t forget about him?? that’s right. so you’d better explain yourself right the fuck now, Fatgum. oh wait I’m still talking in action brackets whoops]

holy crap is Tokoyami giving orders lmao

well look at you. a general, huh? somebody must’ve told them about his little maneuver at the Battle of Taanab

so now some generic villain guys are all “HOW’D THEY FIND OUR SECRET PATH” and “WE MUST DEFEND IT” and I sure can’t wait to watch them get their asses kicked three panels from now

EVERYONE TAMAKI HAS JUST TURNED INTO A HORSE. I IMMEDIATELY HAVE SEVERAL QUESTIONS, THE MOST PRESSING OF WHICH ARE (1) WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO HIS PANTS, AND (2) DOES THIS MEAN TAMAKI ATE A FUCKING HORSE. PLEASE STAY TUNED AS WE URGENTLY INVESTIGATE THESE NEW DEVELOPMENTS

Crackpot Theory Extension on the Dabi is a Todoroki

okay, hear me out

as crazy as this may sound and maybe it’s not because someone else thought it too we just need to put both our crazy brains together and talk I have this idea that what if, WHAT IF--

It’s not that Dabi is a Todoroki

But Dabi’s best friend/closest compatriot was Touya Todoroki.

“How the fuck did you get to that idea--” So this is what I’ve been thinking.

1 - The Backstory

- Dabi and Touya Todoroki were classmates in school, whether all throughout elementary, middle and high school, debatable but possible, dunno. They were best friends and Dabi’s watched Touya come back to school, dejected and useless and somber and clearly lacking in the love and attention he deserves in a proper household. Dabi knows it’s because of the fact that his father’s Endeavour and Enji doesn’t even give this kid the time of day because

Touya’s Quirkless.

How could the man striving for the top position, instilling his hopes into his next generation ever want anything to do with his firstborn being Quirkless? (cause this is all pre-enji being a better guy anyway)

the eldest and unidentified sibling is significantly shorter than both Fuyumi and Natsuo. I kinda can’t help but wonder if this meek and quiet, clearly nervous looking kid with body language has more to be nervous and afraid about because, well, he’s Quirkless, he didn’t even stand a chance.

- When they get older, Dabi suggests and talks Touya into running away with him. Their society isn’t worth a fucking dime anyway so the two of them, with some coaxing on Dabi’s part, leave their homes and try to live life on the streets the best way they can (this covers the bases where the Todoroki family isn’t aware of Touya’s current state and why Natsuo goes and says ‘and what happened to big bro Touya...’ Shouto would be too young to really properly remember the face of an elder brother who’d run off)

“Let’s run away.”

The abandoned clubroom isn’t really much of a secret hideout. It’s musky and there’s dust on some of the shelves, but they’ve stashed old gym matts and magazines in here to keep them entertained and comfortable. The small window that opens up to the outer edge of the school is propped open with a slab of broken wood and there’s a bit of sunlight streaming in, dark orange and molten with the evening coming.

It hides them from the rest of the world and that’s enough for him.

Touya makes that funny face he does when he’s heard another of his crazy ideas and is pretending like he didn’t hear it right. He feels a crooked grin starting to crawl over his lips as he watches Touya. The sunlight just barely ghosts over the top of his head, turning his red hair ruby.

“I think Okinawa’s nice around this time,” Touya says finally. “I’ve always wanted to bring one of those lion statues home for my mom. They ward off evil, y’know.”

“Wherever the fuck you want to go,” he says, sitting up straighter and turning toward him. “Just as long as we go.”

“For how long?”

“Forever.”

Touya puts the book in his hands down. His eyes are a ridiculously pretty shade of turquoise, like chips of the sea frozen over. Touya hates them though because they remind him of his dad.

“C’mon,” he tries again. Now. It’s gotta be now, Touya. “Think about it for a second, it doesn’t sound so bad, right? We’ll take whatever we can carry and just go. My old man doesn’t give a shit about me with that broad around and your asshole father won’t even blink an eye. Let’s just go.”

Touya bites his bottom lip. The look on his face tells him everything he needs to know that this plan might actually work--Touya’s making the face that says he’s thought of it before.

“I can’t,” Touya says.

“You can,” he says firmly, coaxingly. He plops down beside Touya so they sit shoulder to shoulder and he leans into him a bit. “What, you don’t want to rough it out on the streets without those nice maids and fancy food at your beck and call?”

Touya laughs and he knows he’s getting somewhere. “I can’t because I’d have to be rooming with your smoking ass--”

“Cause I’m hot?”

“Cause you literally smoke, dumbass. And plus...” Touya trails off, staring at his hands. “What about Yumi and Natsu? I barely even talk to Shouto and...”

Touya stares harder at his hands, lacing them together. “What about mom?”

“We go away for awhile then,” he says suddenly and Touya watches him. “We go away for awhile. We get older. We come back and we sweep your family out from right under his thumb and we live happily ever after. How about that?”

The smallest smile stretches over Touya’s lips and he knows he’s almost there, he just needs that final push. “When’d you get so optimistic?”

Since you gave me a reason to actually want to be someone’s hero. He shrugs, tugging on one of the piercings on his ear. “I’m the brains and the brawn, remember? I cook up the plans and you tag along with my stupid shit.”

Touya turns his head toward the window. A little breeze tugs at tufts of ruby red. He turns his head a little too to see what Touya was looking at and sees nothing but the school’s concrete wall isolating them from the next street over and a short stretch of grass. There’s cigarette butts scattered on the floor from his bad habits and Touya always tells him to clean it up before he’s caught.

“It’s going to be hard,” Touya says.

“We’ve dealt with harder.”

“I don’t know if I can handle your dumb, smoking ass.”

“I’ll become a rich hag’s call boy and warm her bed up a bit and then we’ll be living the good life, nice and cozy.”

“You can’t even cook.”

“But you can.”

Touya laughs. It’s the happiest sound he’s heard come from Touya’s lips in forever and then he turns those pretty sea eyes his way and he smiles at him. His inky black hair brushes against ruby red and he sees Touya’s eyes take him in and then they go somewhere far again.

So he calls him back.

“He’s never given a damn about you,” he says, a quiet, husky whisper, “you don’t owe him anything.”

Touya’s eyes see him again and he knows then that’s he’s finally beaten Enji Todoroki, the Number Two Hero.

“Okay.”

- They live like this for awhile, maybe even stooping to the occasional petty crime but they’re happy and Dabi thinks this is the best fucking thing that could possibly happen to both of them in this shitty word

- a tragedy strikes, some punkass villain or psycho ormugger or whatever happens, Touya gets hurt so bad and it’s too late for them to get to a hospital, Dabi’s stuck cradling his best friend in his arms screaming for heroes or for someone to do something please but no one comes

- Dabi breaks down and kills the villain/mugger himself, takes Touya’s body away and makes the turn to follow Stain’s ideology because what kind of world is it where the people who were supposed to save and do good won’t even lift a finger unless there’s a paycheck behind it, Enji won’t even miss his son because he wasn’t worth anything anyway

- With their current society, there could actually be a really fair amount of the population wielding fire related Quirks, this is cemented during USJ attack when the villain holding Kaminari mentions their electric type Quirks and Jirou’s like yeah your type have it easy

This scene:

- Being because Dabi’s heard plenty of stories of the cute youngest brother who’s their father’s prodigy now because he’s finally the result Enji wanted. Touya isn’t bitter, maybe sad and wistful because he, being Quirkless, could probably never be a good enough older brother for a kid like that

- Dabi thinks its ironic and laughable that the perfect son is here, failing before him now and he just thinks of the huge hole losing Touya has left inside him

- I’m all aboard the Dabi is a Todoroki theory and heavily lean toward it too, but just for the sake of this crackpot theory, what if this whole confrontation is easily explained because, well, Dabi fucking hates Enji. He abused his son, Dabi’s best friend, forced him into a corner and never gave him the time of day, doesn’t even know that Touya’s gone and you know what? It’s time to pay

- Dabi could have easily let even just a little more slip about this whole thing and we would’ve gotten the confirmation that he is a Todoroki, and it’s either because Horikoshi just wants to tease this big reveal OR it’s because Dabi isn’t a Todoroki but just has a vendetta against them because of Touya

3 - The Conclusion

Dabi probably is a Todoroki since Horikoshi’s stalking tumblr anyway, but in the off chance this crackpot theory is actually plausible

Spring 2018 anime Overview: My Hero Academia Season 3 (Episodes 1-13)

My Hero Academia comes back with a bang for season 3. The students are sent to a superhero training camp, but chaos erupts when villains invade. (Check out my take on season 1 of MHA on Epicstream here, my take on the first arc of season 2 here and my anime overview of MHA season 2 here)

Both My Hero Academia’s strengths and weaknesses persisted in this season. That means annoying bullshit with Mineta sexually harassing the girls as ~comedy ~ , the girl heroes in general being underserved and the occasional bit of sexist or sexualized nonsense. However, it probably says a LOT about My Hero Academia’s strengths that I’m still watching and enjoying.

The characters and their dynamics are so much fun, the fights are some of the best I’ve seen in shonen, the animation is phenomenal and this series can hit the emotional beats so hard and so well. I had so much fun watching this season that I actually couldn’t resist doing a weekly recap/liveblog partway though, which you can check out here if you want more detail on my thoughts and other weirdness.

So this season starts off with the kids at a training camp and though it’s a little bumpy at first (we’ll get to that later), the stakes quickly get wicked high when the villains invade. We also get a little world-building, showing a kid who’s very cynical about superheroes after his parents died in the line of duty. The show hasn’t really gone into what families of heroes go through, and seeing it approach that territory is pretty cool.

Of course it’s up to Deku to prove the worth of heroes, and the fight where he defends Kota is just BOMBASTIC. The action, the visuals, the voice acting, everything is on point- it’s such a simple, not-all-that-uncommon story, but the show executes it with such sincerity and style you’re utterly blown away. Deku’s desperation to save the little boy, his terror when he thinks he’s going to die, the ridiculous bone-breaking feats- it all really hits you.

MHA’s strength is the way it can take simple shonen/superhero plots and elevate them by just going all-in, heart and soul, with total confidence and not a hint of sneer. it’s here to give you a lavish spectacle that has real heart and belief in the power of heroes and the greatness of these characters, and it succeeds. This holds true for the other big fights of this season, particularly All Might’s big one.

Oh boy, does this season have the All Might feels for ya. It was pretty nice to finally learn a little bit about where he came from, and it was very cool to find out he’s carrying on the legacy of a woman, that she’s his mentor and inspiration, and he carries her words and teachings to motivate him in times of need. It’s still sadly rare to see male heroes being inspired by the legacy of women and looking up to them, so I gotta give my props-she’s straight up superhero Mia Fey, and we all know how I feel about that lady. it’s especially nice to see from MHA, which has struggled a lot with adult female characters.

Anyway, All Might’s big fight is pure shonen in the best way, it’s brutal and devastating and over the top and ridiculous and it’s genuinely something that is going to hugely impact the show going forward. You don’t want to miss it

But honestly, MHA’s biggest strength this season may be how it dealt with the aftermath of all this. It was careful to immediately depict the emotional fallout all this violence would have, and the way the characters were going to have to change in response and the conversations they need to have now. That’s a crucial element that’s missing from so many shonen and adventure stories, so it’s nice to see MHA really nail it.

Dead Moms in shonen are kind of a meme, and they’re ubiquitous in young adult adventure stories in general. However, in MHA our protagonist has a living mother who’s struggling to support him, and the show takes the time to explore her feelings over seeing her son get put in life-or-death situations while the older heroes fail to protect him. She puts her foot down, and this is portrayed with far more sympathy toward her than a lot of adventure shows would have. Both All Might and Deku have to acknowledge they’ve been unfair to her, and Deku’s response is surprisingly mature. It’s a very powerful scene that feels grounded in real emotion and it demonstrates the importance of having characters just honestly communicate with each other.

“Legacy” has always been one of my favorite aspects of superheroes, which is unfortunate for me because American comics have a tendency to reset the timeline and erase their legacy heroes. But there’s a real sense of legacy in MHA and it’s a big theme. Heroes will die, they will retire, and new generation will need to step up.

I love that sense of the fight being passed down, of older heroes teaching the younger ones, of the youth carrying those memories and teachings forward. Nobody is permanent, but feelings can last forever if you pass them on.

I’m glad to see the show is leaning into this more than ever, I’m glad to see All Might realize he’s been inadequate as a mentor in some ways and redouble his efforts. I look forward to seeing how the dynamic shift.

It’d be remiss not to mention Bakugou in an overview of this arc, since he was pretty central. I’m honestly surprised by how much I enjoy his character, the way the narrative uses him is just so interesting-the idea that even the villains noticed how much of an asshole this kid is and decided he would fit in is pretty funny, and his reactions to the whole situation were pretty fun and exciting to watch. This season definitely made me understand him a lot more (I go into it more during my recap here if you’re curious) and I’m interested to see where he goes from here- he hasn’t gotten much kinder or seen the error of his ways, and I doubt he will any time soon, but I see signs of progress and his worldview seems to be cracking.

I once again appreciate that while he and Deku are big influences to each other as “rivals”, neither of them is the center of each other’s world or the one who will “save” the other. Deku straight up says that he can’t be the one to “reach out” to Bakugou and he’s accepted that Bakugou would never reach back to him, so when it comes to appealing to him, he elects someone better qualified. That’s a pretty unusual thing to hear a shonen hero say about ANYONE, much less his rival, and the fact their dynamic doesn’t follow the standard is way more interesting to me.

So yeah, I enjoyed the first part of season 3 a lot. But there was some bad stuff. Of course there was. And we gotta talk about it.

The secens of Mineta trying to sexually harass the girls early in the season are some of the worst the show has to offer yet- even when he fails, the girls are still threatened and sexualized. I do appreciate Kota for trying to murder him over it. If only he had succeeded, he would have been the biggest hero of them all. But it’s just galling that the teachers know about Mineta’s behavior and he hasn’t been punished, considering this school is supposed to be about heroism and goodness.

Horikoshi’s gross handling of older female characters continues, we straight up have a 31- old lady superhero whose entire personality is she’s ~desperate to be married~ because she’s ~so old~ and excuse me while I bang my head into the wall. It’s especially stupid to see this overused cliche persist since the average age for marriage amongJapanese women to get married is much higher than it used to be- it’s 31, so she shouldn’t feel like she’s “past the deadline”, she’s absolutely average. But nope, gotta have those stereotypes- even to the point of having her hit on teenage boys, because that’s not creepy. Oh, and when it comes to the big fight she just gets knocked out immediately.

To be fair, Mandalay, who’s the same age, seems sensible and competent enough and we actually finally do get an important, inspirational older female superhero with Nana (though she’s dead, so, there’s that).

The girls get some nice moments this season (Itsuka was badass) and they all remain competent and fun characters, but they’re noticeably sidelined a lot when it comes to fighting especially- both Tsuyu and Ochako conveniently can’t get to one big fight on time so its all boys and while Momo was super awesome in being saavy enough to put a tracer on the villains when they kidnap a classmate- without her efforts the big rescue couldn’t have even taken place at all- it’s very noticable that all the boys on the rescue squad gets to play a physical role in the rescue while Momo just has to stand there.

And the one female villain on the massive villain league- well, her whole thing is she’s horny in a creepy way, because of course it is. But hey, at least Mt. Lady finally got to do something besides be a sexy joke for once!

Okay, I’m done griping. There’s still a Lot of trashy nonsense to contend with when it comes to MHA and I doubt that’s going to get much better. But the show manages to keep me coming back for more because of all the other stuff it has to offer. It can be So Bad sometimes but then most of the time it’s So Good. The true meaning of a problematic fav.

I just...love these kids (sans mineta)...i love watching them interact...they deserve the world...and I can’t wait to see more of them as the season continues.

BNHA Chapter 159: Thoughts and Spoilers

Simple, this was a great way to wrap up the fight. I was glad we got to see all the characters that participated in the raid. So let’s get into it.

I was wrong in my guess about the relationship between Chrono and Overhaul. Apparently they have been friends for a long time, and Chrono has absolute faith in Overhaul (to bad they were up against some grade A heroes). And dang, Chrono was ready to straight up murder Aizawa. I mean, I know that Chrono is a villain, but killing someone who can’t protest at all is less of murder and more of an execution. Good thing my boy Suneater came in with that swordfish that Fatgum gave him what feels like ages ago. Suneater even had his buddy Lemillion with him, I am really glad that it was Amajiki that found Mirio, it is fitting. Then “Ribbit-Ribbit girl” comes in and you know any scene with Tsuyu instantly becomes significantly better.

Deku is busting up Overhaul, freaking judo flipping the massive monster after a flurry of 100% punches. Notice this to: Deku flipped Overhaul in a space that Overhaul had already destroyed, keeping damage to a minimum. I really like how conscious of the whole situation the heroes are. Now we get to see Overhaul’s face, and I was surprised by the plainness of it. The dirty/bruising that he has on his face gives an amazing sense of roundness (Kirishima had this awesome shading on his face too right after his fight with Rappa), I am always impressed with Horikoshi’s artistic style. Speaking of art style, the sheer intensity of Eri’s quirk on Deku and her surroundings is a sight to behold.

Eri’s quirk has the potential to be gentle as Deku said, but at the current unrestrained stage, I can kinda see where Overhaul is coming from. The usage of her quirk pains Eri and the effects seem like a mix between an explosion and a lightning strike. While, Deku is simply trying to withstand Eri’s ability, Overhaul has one last surge of strength. His eyes are whited out in this scene so my conclusion is that Overhaul is strong in his convictions, they are so deeply rooted that he continued the fight after he no longer was conscious. That may be a bit too exaggerated, but he definitely was not thinking straight, he continued fighting on instinct. As much as he became an ass towards the end, I gotta admire the tenacity he has.

Buuuuuttt that last effort was proven worthless with Eri’s power. Not only did she stop Overhaul’s attack, but she also pried the big guy out of Overhaul’s mixed form and healed Overhaul (though he remained unconscious). Without missing a beat, Uraraka jumps in and restrains Overhaul. Honestly I am so amazed with this. She was watching this fight go down and the instant, the very instant she sees an opening, she seizes it. Plus the fact that Overhaul is most dangerous with his hands, so she has the precision to grab the wrists to keep herself safe. She never forgot any of the training she underwent with Gunhead too and I am amazed with that. Forgetting something like a takedown I feel would be incredible easy to do if you are actively practicing it all the time (what’s the term? Headcanon? Aiight, so headcanon that Uraraka asks her classmates to be practice buddies and she just f*cking throws them down to the point she scares some of them and she has to ask someone else).

Eri is still using her quirk. It is genuinely terrifying. IN one of the scenes she looks like a little demon with the horn to match. I don’t know if Eri will go into hero work or not, but if she does she will be a force to be reckoned with, but most importantly I want Eri to have a loving family and a happy life. Also massive props to Tsuyu for realizing that Aizawa is trying to help and immediately puts him into a position where he can help. Seriously, all the heroes have A+ fighting sense and cooperation, it’s great that they all work so well together. I don’t really get why Aizawa apologizes to Deku for using his quirk, I suppose there might be some feeling of etiquette that Aizawa has to deal with the same way the Shinso might feel bad about using his quirk on a friend.

Then Eri falls into Deku’s arms (freaking beautiful panel). We see all the heroes checking up on each other, Kirishima being extracted from his little hospital room (love how tall Fatgum is), heroes talking with police officers, villains being detained and police officers going through the rounds to check for civilian injuries and searching for Twice and Toga. Sir even manages to tell Deku did in fact manage to twist the future, even though he has a spire going through his body and is missing an arm. I guess it is kinda ironic that Sir now has an injury that matches All Might’s, since both injuries are lower right abdomen.

Slight tangent, I am not sure how I feel about Deku coming out of Eri’s power completely fine. I understand that he was in immense pain right after the fight while the reversal was still happening, but I figured there would be some kind of long term effect, since that is a theme that is consistently brought up. I think someone pointed out that one of the scars on Deku’s arm was missing too? (though that could just be the angle) So not only did he come out of this unscathed (generally) but miraculously healed to the point that his arms aren’t on the verge of being unusable? I feel like it goes counter to some of the themes but I am willing to overlooking it because Eri is awesome and Deku deserves to be able to use his arms since the were put in a bad state super early in his heroing life.

And finally, Handsy, Dabi and the real Compress drop in on the party. Not only do they drop in, but they are targeting the wounded villains. Can I say that Shigaraki is really starting to look like an antagonist? Like real final boss type material. Bro, he is crouched on top of an eighteen wheeler casually talking strategy and killing kings in that cool ass coat that’s flapping in the wind. He’s got the villain flare down pat, even if Dabi is trying to correct Handsy’s oversimplified shogi strategy. Now I am not sure if they are really going to kill Overhaul and his injured lackies or capture them, I’m leaning towards the latter just because saving them could really be beneficial to the League of Villains.

BnHA Chapter 299: No Chains Left

Previously on BnHA: Horikoshi was all “and then AFO broke out all of the inmates from six other prisons and took a nap. well anyways, here’s the hospital angst.” Kacchan woke up two days later and was all, “WAIT BUT HOW ARE DEKU AND TODOROKI AND ALL OF THE OTHER CHARACTERS EXCEPT IIDA DOING” and then we cut to Shouto’s room where the other U.A. kids were sitting around being Mutually Traumatized and giving each other moral support and such. Everyone was alll, “...”, and then the rest of the Todofam showed up, INCLUDING POSSIBLY REI?! which, omg. The chapter ended with Kacchan STOMPING THROUGH THE HALLS all “WHADDYA MEAN DEKU HASN’T WOKEN UP YET”, dragging along Satou and Mineta behind him, fueled by the power of ALL OF THE FUCKS HE NOW GIVES. He gives so many fucks now you guys. This boy cares so much he can probably deduct it on his taxes.

Today on BnHA: SPEAKING OF PEOPLE WHO GIVE A LOT OF FUCKS, the story cuts abruptly to Hawks, freshly recovering from his near-death experience, and pondering the threads that have weaved the tapestry of his life and led him to this moment. Basically he grew up in poverty with his Jerk Dad and Jerk Mom until his dad got arrested one day and his mom sent him off to go Find Money Or Something, and so he rescued a busload of people and found himself a new career. Back in the present day, Hawks and Jeanist ride around town in Jeanist’s Jamborghini having awkward encounters with civilians in a country on the brink of social collapse, and visiting Hawks’s mother’s home. Hawks is all “I know from an outsider’s perspective it must look like my life currently sucks, but now that the HPSC is gone, my public image is shot, and my parents are finally out of my life, I’m actually feeling SURPRISINGLY GOOD.” Anyway so he’s gonna go meet up with Endeavor now, and p.s. this chapter was fucking fantastic though, damn.

oh my god?? is this Hawks narration?? something about him growing up watching the heroes on TV and thinking of them as fictional characters

okay I scrolled down a little bit more to see the rest of that “Keigo” panel, and wow

this is basically a shed. poor boy definitely grew up rough. let me tell you guys, I came in here ready for some BakuDeku shenanigans; I was not prepared for Hawks Flashback Angst. I AM HERE FOR IT, but also wow I gotta brace myself now lol

swear to god this kid can’t be more than five or six, and yet he has this completely blank look on his face even with his dad looming over him being all threatening and shit. like he’s shut down his emotions to protect himself. imagine what has to happen to a child for him to have learned this at such a young age. fuck

then again he doesn’t really bear much of a resemblance to his strung-out mom here either

omg omg omg. and this child is basically trapped here in this environment with these two people. this explains a SHITLOAD about Hawks’s personality though you guys. his ability to completely separate his real thoughts from the face he presents to the outside world. his pragmatic approach to analyzing and solving problems. his layers of emotional walls. turns out almost none of that came from the HPSC training -- that was all learned hands-on in his own personal do-or-die survival nightmare childhood!! oh, boy

and small wonder then that he latched on to Endeavor so strongly if he really is the one who brought down his dad and inadvertently saved him from this. also, just putting this out there, I know people are always talking about him and Dabi being foils, and I think it’s very interesting how Touya grew up in a household where he saw firsthand the dark side of hero society, and so ended up becoming a villain in order to bring it down. whereas young Keigo had almost the exact opposite experience, growing up experiencing the dark side of villain society and becoming a hero in order to bring about a world where no one else has to experience that. just. both of them are so determined not to become their fathers. some interesting parallels there

so Hawks was sort of an accident after his parents had “thanks for helping me not get caught after I killed that guy” sex, and now this little boy is growing up in squalor and being beaten by his father for things like Sitting In The Wrong Out-Of-The-Way Corner Trying Not To Be A Bother To Anybody. holy fuck. this is so rough to read through you guys

wait so does Jerk Dad have a an eyeball manipulation quirk?? because he doesn’t have the wings like his son, but wth are these things??

this presumably also means that Keigo has never been to school or anything either. he basically doesn’t exist. he thinks heroes are fictional characters, he doesn’t realize that they’re real people. these are people who could help him if he could escape and find them, but he doesn’t know, and they don’t know about him

BnHA Chapter 289: Looks Like the Gang’s All Here

Previously on BnHA: Horikoshi was all “you guys don’t really need to know what’s gonna happen to Deku and Shouto right now” and cut away to Toga and Ochako before anyone could get a word in. Skeptic utilized the power of Freak Shounen Coincidence to magically zero in on Ochako and Tsuyu amongst the fleeing crowd. Toga was all “IS THAT OCHAKO” and immediately leaped down to fight them, ignoring Spinner’s heartfelt speeches about Villain Found Family because fight now, hug later!! Down in the streets of some unidentified crumbling city, Ochako was approached by a sweet old lady and was all “I better help this sweet old lady who is definitely not leading me into a trap”, which unfortunately turned out to be poor decision-making on her part. Anyway so now she and Toga are going to throw down. AND ALSO, P.S., BEST JEANIST IS STILL ALIVE, and that doesn’t really have anything to do with anything right now, but BY GOLLY I JUST HAD TO SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOFTOPS.

Today on BnHA: Iida and Hadou are all “is it our turn yet”, and Horikoshi is all “yes”, and so the two of them finally burst onto the scene and are all “hello Shouto, Gigantomachia is on his way, btw do you need help” and so they all get ready to fight Tomura together. Meanwhile in Unnamed Ochako And Toga Fight Town, Toga is all “what’s up Ochako, oh is this the All Might doll Deku gave you, I guess you must like Deku as well, just like me, we truly are the same, btw I can use other people’s quirks now” before she vanishes in a flurry of knives and ambiguity, as mysteriously as she came. So that’s a thing that happened. The chapter ends with Gigantomachia and the League STOMPIN’ ONTO THE SCENE, JUST IN TIME FOR ENDEAVOR TO WAKE UP AND BE ALL “OHHHHH SHIT.” YOU’RE DAMN RIGHT, “OH SHIT.” Finally the pieces are in place for Dabi to reveal his true identity to Hadou and Iida, JUST LIKE WE ALL EXPECTED.

BnHA Chapter 200: Mushroom Mushroom

Previously on BnHA: We flashed back to Tokoyami’s workplace experience and later internship with Hawks. During the former, Hawks was pretty much one step ahead of his sidekicks and poor Toko the entire time, and they were reduced to running around after him as his cleanup crew. A frustrated Tokoyami asked why he’d drafted him and Hawks said it was mostly because he wanted to talk to one of the 1-A kids about the USJ attack. This frustrated Toko, but he still chose to go back to Hawks’s agency during his For Reals Internship, and this time he showed off some new skills he had learned and Hawks was actually impressed. He revealed to Tokoyami that the other reason he’d initially drafted him was because he thought Toko was wasting his potential: “if you’ve got wings, you should stretch them out and fly.” Back in the present, Tokoyami revealed his new Black Fallen Angel technique, in which Dark Shadow basically carries him around in his arms while they fly around. He busted this move out to rescue Aoyama from Kuroiro’s clutches, but before they could capture Kuro, Kendou’s team switched to their plan B, and Toadette suddenly made a mushroom sprout from the tip of Momo’s nose. Okay.

Today on BnHA: Toadette sprouts a bunch of mushrooms everywhere and it’s deeply and profoundly unsettling and no one likes it and what the fuck is wrong with Horikoshi honestly. Anyway, apparently Kendou planned it so that even if Team A was able to counter Kuroiro with a “light” technique, they’d still end up revealing their location, and on top of that they’d weaken Dark Shadow too. Momo tried to gather her team to regroup, but before they could, Team B’s Manga struck with his incredibly badass quirk which allows him to create physical onomatopoeia. Like, this dude creates a wall of giant letters by shouting something to the effect of “BAM KERSLAM” and it’s the greatest thing I’ve ever seen. Then he makes the air all humid by whispering the onomato for “muggy.” This causes Toadette’s mushrooms to grow even faster, which I hate so much. Anyway, so Momo is cut off from the rest of her team by the giant letters, and Kendou proceeds to attack, knowing she has the advantage in a physical one-on-one match. The rest of the chapter is just Shouto quietly hyping up Momo from the sidelines, which I think we can all appreciate. Go Momo.

(As always, all comments not marked with an ETA are my mostly-unspoiled reactions from my first readthrough of this chapter. I’m caught up with the manga now at chapter 223, so any ETAs will reflect that.)

though it’s interesting that they didn’t get a color page! but this seriously is adorable so it’s fine

(ETA: and they probably didn’t get a color page because this chapter is the shortest chapter in history lol. we’re lucky we got what we did.)

I’m trying to figure out if Katsuki is actually trying to smile but just doesn’t know how to do so on command. like, he’s baring his teeth, but it’s not quite as ferocious as usual, ya feel? I feel like he knows the mechanics of smiling on a theoretical level but has no idea which muscles to use, and so he just ended up like that and was all “fuck it that’s close enough.” if you really want him to smile you gotta earn it

meanwhile Shouto is just not making any kind of effort at all. I don’t think he was ready yet

and Iida is clearly the one taking the selfie so let’s take a moment and give him some props for getting as good of a shot as he did considering what he’s working with

this also feels like as good a place as any to stop for a sec and analyze the changes in Horikoshi’s art style over the past 200 chapters. overall it hasn’t changed all that much, but one thing I’ve noticed is that the characters’ faces used to be longer and more angular, particularly the chin area (especially the male characters), and nowadays they’re all a bit more rounded out. also their necks used to be longer. the overall effect is that they all look a bit younger and more adorable. characters like Ochako have barely changed at all, but the difference is much more apparent in characters like Todoroki and Shinsou and even Deku himself

anyways, just wanted to make a note of that, since it’s something that’s been in the back of my mind since Shinsou’s reappearance. now back to our regularly scheduled chapter!

so yeah, mushrooms

something about this is so powerfully and viscerally unsettling. do I have mycophobia??

(ETA: yeah it’s definitely mycophobia. fungus creeps me out. this chapter is a fucking nightmare for me honestly. the weird thing is mushrooms are actually delicious. I don’t mind eating them, I just don’t want to look at them or acknowledge them ever basically I guess. anyway. back to this ordeal.)

this is a fucking nightmare quirk. this is up there with Centipeder. if I had this quirk I’d be knocking on AFO’s door all “take it, buddy. go ahead and sign me up for your evil army, whatever. just fucking take it dude”

so they can do that then? then why didn’t they do that earlier when Kuro hitched a ride on Dark Shadow back to their group??

well you know what, if Horikoshi had to make them lose for plot reasons, then this is about as good of a job as he could have done. you know that if Momo had remained with the rest of her team they would have pulled out a victory. Kendou knew that cutting her off from the others was key

I love that she was smart enough to know that she wasn’t smart enough to best Momo. like, that’s not a knock against her at all; according to the character book Momo has S-ranked intelligence, the highest you can get. she’s on a level matched only by the Rat Principal and fucking All for One (and All Might, but he’s S-ranked in everything and clearly that’s just because he’s All Might)

and for the record, Kendou herself has A-ranked intelligence, which is the same level as Mei and smarter even than Deku and his Big Hero Brain. so yeah -- she’s good

and I got a bit off track, but anyway I was just trying to say that I love that she knew she had to strategize so that she could battle on her own terms

oh my god. I’m so fucking conflicted!! I want Momo to kick ass so bad. but I don’t want 1-A to just sweep all five battles. and I also want Kacchan’s team to win because he needs a fucking win! but if anyone else from 1-A wins leading up to his group, then I feel like he can’t because that would mean 1-A wins the whole thing then and there, and Deku’s group becomes just a formality at that point

also holy shit you guys, this chapter was only 10 fucking pages. and one of those was a (black and white) cover page. this has got to be the least amount of fanfare I’ve ever seen for this kind of milestone, particularly for a series at this level of popularity. damn

but I’m guessing Horikoshi just needs a break, which is fine. probably it’s either shorter chapters, or One Piece-style frequent weekly breaks, or else unfinished chapters like we get every so often. I generally think it’s good for the writer of the series to get to sleep more than three hours a night, so sure, you know what, do as many 10-page chapters as you like. I’ll be grateful for whatever lol

(ETA: apparently Horikoshi mentioned in an author’s comment back in December that he was moving. so that may well be why the chapters got really short for a while. the last half dozen or so have been a consistent 15 pages each, so hopefully we’re past that now and I can get my solid weekly fix for the next couple weeks until we hit Golden Week and WSJ goes on break and I fall into withdrawals and have to compensate by seeing Avengers: Endgame seven times sob.)
