I do, but unfortunately I don’t have time, energy or mental capacity to do it these days. There are a lot of people waiting for me to reply at this point and I feel bad enough for making them wait…

Whenever I draw commissions though, I like it when a person talks about the character a little bit. It helps me to get a better feeling of what the character is like as I draw them.

Hmm, let’s just say that any ship that we have with Idia has some potential to become toxic at some point. Especially considering the fact that we kind of love toxic ships lol Ortho/Idia is toxic in a way: aside for obvious reasons, they have codependency, and them being together would enable Idia to never poke his nose out of his shell. But even if this situation ends up being a huge mess and dynamic becomes completely unhealthy, I can’t imagine Idia being miserable or unhappy in any way: Ortho is his everything.

Speaking of shells, Azul/Idia also has a lot of toxic potential, and this is really the point of our Marriage AU with these two. They work well together, and they would have happy moments, they could even end up being an almost healthy couple if they work through their issues (and both of them got plenty), but it requires a lot of dedication, empathy and being able to compromise, and they kind of lack some of these things. Communication also matters – Azul doesn’t want to show his vulnerable side and doesn’t even register some of his own emotions, and Idia doesn’t want to burden himself with helping Azul through this either. So it’s very possible for Idia to realise that he is very unhappy with Azul after some time… well, we talked about it a lot in replies about Idia escaping Azul’s “golden cage” in the AU. It could also take a very dark turn, because Azul is capable of doing scary things when he is hurt, and he is very jealous, petty and vindictive.

Can’t say much about Lilia, because as we established it wouldn’t be much of a relationship, but all the time they would spend together would probably be a happy time for Lilia and Idia; the only thing that sours this experience and makes it a horrible memory is the fact that it would end at some point.

The Tweels would probably be an easy answer for this question lol But then again, they wouldn’t really date… but realistically, Idia is the worst off with them. They’re just playing with Idia, even if they genuinely like him. Even if they’re obsessed with him and want to keep him by their side forever, he is still more of a pet than a partner, and that’s kind of toxic lol

I guess Sebek is also an option, but if they miraculously end up having an affair, it would probably end pretty soon :( It would be a very fast yet toxic storm of emotions lol

Sebek is very confused: it’s probably a mix of everything that you’ve described. He doesn’t like Idia because he irritates him and makes him mad in record times with just one little provocation or snarky remark. Idia goes against everything that Sebek believes in, therefore in his mind they are… what exactly? Sebek can’t really pinpoint it, and he probably won’t even want to do so. Even if they have sex several times, Sebek flip-flops between “this is a huge mistake, why would I do it” and “I’m blessing your pathetic self with my glory and you should be thankful”. This is the level of Sebek’s own understanding.

In actuality, he does enjoy the intimacy; he does get thrilled when Idia provokes him. Maybe it’s due to the fact that Idia is just so wrong on so many levels in Sebek’s mind, but he is drawn to him. He wants to fix him, to break his cynical mind into understanding that he is wrong and Sebek is right. But Sebek only gets more mocking, which means no closure, which means the obsession grows stronger.

Is he jealous? Yeah, on a very childish level. He doesn’t like Idia, but he enjoys whatever they have, so he feels possessive. It also feels super wrong to him that people like Lilia would treat Idia any better than he deserves to be treated.

But also Sebek probably wants to be special to Idia. The fact that he spent all this energy screaming his truths into Idia’s snarky face and breaking his body into obedience and yet that ended up meaning absolutely nothing is very painful for his poor soul lol He desperately wants him to say “thank you, Sebek, for explaining to me how the world works”.

As for Idia… he absolutely tries not to think about it and to keep Sebek’s role in his life to a minimum. Even if they were to have sex, Idia probably puts the responsibility completely on Sebek, because it’s always him who initiates things. It’s not Idia’s fault that Sebek’s head is so far up his own ass that he doesn’t understand that he is just horny, and that Idia just happens to be an easy target because he is helpless against this beast. And yes, it doesn’t matter that Idia enjoys it too!

That being said, I think over time, if their relationship continued, Sebek would become calmer and would get used to Idia’s behaviour, at least on some level. He’d still get provoked by him, but he’d become more aware about it and even catch Idia’s intentions from time to time. After Idia’s next even worse remark he’d snap again lol But I do believe that despite this insurmountable obstacle Sebek can develop genuine feelings for Idia and they can get an actual working relationship, Sebek just needs more experience interacting with various people and becoming more open-minded, like Lilia wants him to be.

I don’t even have much to add, Anon, you nailed it. I absolutely agree that this is the case for Idia. I don’t know why he is so drawn to this image of the older reliable businessman type man who is so experienced and so mature and serious and probably has his own life and family (and yet finds time to hang out with him!)… but he absolutely is. That silly boy.

I think Madam Red is too stylish for Mrs. Rosehearts, if that makes sense?? She is one bold woman, and Mrs. Rosehearts strikes me as someone who prefers very old-fashioned kind of look.

Victorian era Madam Red would somehow look more modern than Mrs. Rosehearts lol I also think she doesn’t wear lipstick.

Yeah, it’s a pretty obvious thing! We really like that the Octa-boys have this yakuza/mafia motif, and the fact that whenever they talk about their family, it’s always kinda….ehhh... 😳 God how much I hope we’ll get to see their parents! AND THEIR GRANDMA TOO!

I made a rough sketch of how I picture them, but just like with the Ace’s brother sketch from the other day, the designs aren’t 100% concrete yet and we might change some stuff about them. Well, this time this isn’t even much of a design, just silhouettes lol But I think it’s still pretty easy to tell the overall vibe. The dad is freakishly massive and intimidating; the mom is very elegant but dangerous nonetheless.

Also, based on how they look, I guess I agree that Floyd is more like their dad and Jade is more like their mom lol

When it comes to their personalities, I think Papa Leech has this wild, scary and sadistic side that made him a legend in his own way, and he is chaotic in some ways, but he is also very disciplined and makes sure that everyone knows their place. He’s your typical mafia boss, the one which makes an entire room get silent as soon as he just walks in there. He is also a bit calmer now that he used to be + has a bit of a… silly? Side? He gets very into movies when he watches them, he talks to characters, yells at them, sobs when a dog dies, all this stuff. Sometimes he is a fun dad (although his idea of “fun” is sometimes scary), but he is the one who disciplines Jade and Floyd the most.

And Mama Leech is a huge worrywart, but only with her kids. With them she is dramatic and fussy, a bit overprotective, but it’s also not 100% obvious if she is genuinely worried about them or just completely messes with them. She kind of likes embarrassing her boys lol She is also a master of emotional manipulation and is much scarier and more powerful than she actually looks. She also prefers to make it seems like she is just a sweet obedient wife, but Papa Leech married her because of how deadly she actually is.

The life series relationship between Joel and Scott is so interesting to me and I just need to gush about it for a minute. Like, it’s a rivalry that’s almost one-sided, but not completely. It also just continues to progress throughout the whole series, through every season with pretty much the same dynamic throughout.

I think the place it really starts is in third life, with Joel’s burning of the wall. Before this there’s still some conflict between them, like when Joel decides to steal Scott’s cows with Martyn, but that was more Martyn’s idea than his so I don’t count it. The wall was the true catalyst for everything. Not much else really happens between them in third life besides just an overall distrust of each other, so I’ll move on.

In last life, most of their interactions involve Joel trying to kill Scott with varying levels of success. He manages to get a boogey kill on him in the second episode but gets killed by Pearl right after, turning him to red. As a red name, he often tries to kill Scott but it never really works, though he does manage to destroy the Scottage with tnt. Eventually, when Scott becomes red as well, they make a tentative red alliance. They still don’t trust or like each other though and plan to separate at the soonest possible convenience. In one of my favorite exchanges between the two, Scott asks Joel why he doesn’t like him when he’s the one doing everything to him and Joel answers that Scott just looked at him funny one day. I think I’ve talked about last life enough but now though, so the gist of how it ends is that Scott and his allies hunt down Joel and Grian and Scott gets the final kill on both.

So now it’s double life, the season where they’re probably the most friendly to each other. They’re neighbors and they have a good relationship for the most part. Joel is the one to get the first two kills on the Scott and Pearl soulmate duo, but the first one isn’t personal to Scott, it was just because Pearl decided to make bad decisions. The second one was definitely personal, however. Joel wanted to kill Scott, so he got all the reds to help him kill Scott. Before this though, something interesting happened. Scott set Joel’s relation ship on fire and Joel burns down every other base in return. I think that’s mostly it for double life, so let’s move on.

Limited life is where it gets really interesting, because this is when Scott finally snaps. Joel tries to kill Scott so many times and while I don’t remember every single death in this series since there are so many, I’m pretty sure he never succeeds. At one point, he even gathers everyone but Scott’s allies and gets them to chase and try to kill Scott. This seems to be becoming a pattern now. Anyways, Scott eventually has enough and switches it. Now, he’s the one hunting Joel down, but unlike his rival, Scott succeeds. He kills Joel again and again and again, and in the end, ends Joel’s series and making him the third one out.

Now I know that’s a lot of raw information, so let’s review. Joel tries to kill Scott a lot. He sometimes manages to do it, but most of the time he fails. He also destroys all of Scott’s bases except for the coral isles in limited life. Scott, though, does not go out of his way to kill or harm Joel, at least not until the end. Most of the things he does against Joel are revenge, and usually not even equal revenge at that. As the series goes on, though, Joel gets more and more determined to kill him and Scott gets more and more frustrated at these attempts. This all culminates in the end of Joel’s limited life series, where Scott kills him a bunch of times.

All this is why, in my totally correct opinion, Scott and Joel should team up in the next life series. Think about it. It would wrap up their relationship arc well while changing things up in the dynamic. It’s also very likely that Joel would end up betraying Scott, adding angst fuel to both their overarching stories with Scott being betrayed again and Joel being alone again. Also, on a purely statistical level, they would make a great team. Joel’s problem is that he’s really reckless. We’ve seen before with Etho that when Joel is with someone who’s more level-headed and practical than him, he can do very well. Scott definitely fits the bill for this. They’re also both very good at pvp. This would make them something of a power duo, and I would love to see that with them.

I chatted with my brother about Naruto. He had followed the anime and manga at that time. And he thinks Naruto’s a little weird.

My brother’s word: “If I am Naruto, who the fxxk Sasuke is? I wouldn’t care about him after he declares he wanted to destroy the village. I am more Kakashi. If you want to stay bro with me and wander around, I wouldn’t follow you or kill you. That’s your life. Who the fxxk do I think I am to tell you what you do? But don’t bring my home into your shit.”

Even as straight as he is, he finds the dynamic of Naruhina and Sasusaku weird. He isn’t opposed to the idea that Naruto and Sasuke remains single and travel the world.

Two guys traveling together as brothers is a common concept in Chinese Martial art novels. Jin Yongs’ are really great. He knows how to write brotherhood without making them gays and how to write good female characters that could move the plots smoothly. His female characters are the best. They have show-comings but all of them are charming in their ways, even villains.

The reason he thinks Naruto wants to be with Hinata is her breast, the same reason with Ichigo in Bleach, which, based on his personal opinion, is legit and reasonable.

In his words, “Guys don’t care that much. You bring me food, clean my house, raise our kids well. You are good. We would protect you, support you and raise our kids.”

Sakura is not bad but he doesn’t think Sasuke likes her. He thinks Sasuke is more a single type, who never marries and he thinks he is too rebellious to obey the whole social system about parents and kids. She would be good fuck buddies because she is too obsessed with him. It wouldn’t waste any efforts. (That’s just so, so, so straight.)

And Danzou is a bitch. A universal idea.

He likes Senju brothers and thinks Madara should be the final villain.

And Kaguya shit is just for money. A universal idea.

As for being fathers, he thinks Naruto is a good father. He brings food to the table, so what is Boruto complaining about? Not enough attentions? Find some books to read or some games to play. Boys should start to find their own habits to focus on at 12.

He thinks Boruto is too old to bitch about his father working all the time and Naruto is a good father to tolerate his shit.

In his words, “find a hobby. That guy is just too bored. Our father would never tolerate this kind of disrespect.”

For Sarada, he directly says Sasuke just isn’t into family. He doesn’t want kids at all. That’s sometimes natural for guys like him.

When guys talk about Naruto, the whole discussion would literally be about who is the strongest and who can beat whom, for an hour. That’s so fun.

And some really, really straight guys could literally read the same stories in completely different ways.

By the way, my brother is never a sexiest. He just talked about his feeling about those ships and the reasons why all of them might align with the reality. I just consider those opinions funny and post his ideas here because those are just too straight. So straight and different to a point that I can’t believe we read the same stuffs. And men should have this right to talk about their ideas about women because we women also have rights to talk about who would be good husband and why. That’s called gender equality.

Ed’s fears

Just wanna talk about Ed's trust issues and fear of rejection and embarrassment for a bit. I’m sure a lot has been said about it already, but I need to release the pressure from my cranium.

I love Ed because he’s simultaneously very confident and comfortable in his skin, with great people skills and open demeanor, but also has a lot of insecurities and feels lost in social situations he's not familiar with. He's up to any silly shit as long as others support it or find it cool, but if he thinks that people are starting to laugh at him instead of with him, he loses it.

Ed says that fear is the most powerful emotion, and that Blackbeard feels no fear. But the real Ed's biggest fear is being ridiculed and undermined. He simultaneously dislikes the caricature of violence people assign to him, yet subconsciously Needs to be the scariest pirate out there, because if people are afraid of him, they won't laugh at him.

It parallels Stede in an interesting way, because Stede is very familiar with being seen as cringe by everyone around, but he just kinda accepted it at this point, and doesn't let it stop him anymore. He only has this one life to live, and he's gonna do it his way, silly libraries on board and all, which is what Ed admires about him. Stede doesn't need to be some tough shit pirate to be able to handle some shade and throw some back, without absolutely losing it. If Stede learned to be a little more unhinged about standing up for himself from Ed, I hope Ed can learn some composure from him, too.

In the 5th episode, Ed is completely out of his element. These people have their own set of bizarre rules that are hard for him to follow, brilliant sailor or not. They don't know who he is, so his reputation and threats don't affect them. Not to mention him being a mixed person of color. His fear of being emotionally trampled was palpable in that shrimp scene, and he was about to resort to the only way he knows how to fix it: taking out his gun and maiming some bitches.

Ed's disturbed by the notion that thinly veiled insults exist as a form of emotional warfare, and that Stede obliterated an entire ship with politely delivered words alone. I think that moment of Stede's derangement was definitely respected and appreciated by Ed, but it also planted a seed of "he's capable of destroying me in ways I couldn't even fathom" in his mind.

During Ed's stay on the ship, he and Stede come to feel comfortable enough around each other to open up and be themselves without worrying about how others see them. This requires trust in each other, the trust that if you show your belly you won't get stabbed in it.

I think Calico Jack was the first blow to Ed's newly acquired trust in that regard. The old Blackbeard would've been on his guard and suspicious of Jack from the start, but for the new trusting Ed it was enough to cry about a mutiny (which I imagine Jack normally wouldn’t do). Jack tricks him, then laughs in his face and mocks the idea that pirates could even have friends. On top of that, Ed finds out that Izzy gave them up, and Izzy has always been his most trustworthy person.

Stede disappearing after their most vulnerable moment is obviously the biggest nail in the coffin. It's very telling that Ed didn't go back looking for Stede, in case he got himself into some trouble, but just kinda sat there in defeat, like deep down he expected it to go this way.

There’s a neat progression of his power dynamic with Stede. When they first met, Ed was obviously friendly and nice with Stede, but he had the upper hand there. Blackbeard is the legend of the seas, and Stede is a funny little guy who almost got killed for being stupid. Ed really enjoys casually revealing his identity to Stede, because he knows how much it'll awe him. "You're a lunatic and I like it" isn't an insult by any means, but it says “I know my shit, and you don’t (affectionate)”.

But then in the 5th episode, he learns that Stede is equally as knowledgeable and ruthless in other areas. In the 6th, Stede supports him through a moment of weakness and self-loathing. After that, Ed is no longer a cool menacing idol to a little incompetent goofball nobody; he fully comes to see Stede as an equal, hence them deciding to co-captain.

And after they level it out, Ed almost seems like he's afraid to believe that Stede Actually Really likes him back. He's very moved that Stede is willing to look past his assassination attempt; he looks surprised when Lucius tells him Stede went out of his way to do something fun for him; when Jack appears and badly influences his behavior, Ed sheepishly argues this is the real him, and Stede wouldn't like it anyway, so leaving is the right option. The way he says "what makes Ed happy is...you" is with baited breath.

If Stede is his equal and knows his weaknesses, he could hurt Ed like no one before, but Ed probably wouldn’t have the heart to hurt him back. That’s quite a vulnerable and scary position for him, so Ed is ready to explode the bridges and run if anything went even slightly wrong.

So maybe Stede's upset reaction to his resigned state confused him. Or maybe he projected his own unstable unreliable nature onto Stede. Or maybe he thought that Stede wasn't ready to become a real outlaw, or would rather not involve himself with such a horrible person after all. Or that their entire relationship was some fucked up social experiment invented by the upper class weirdos. Either way, I'm sure that when Stede didn't show up, he felt like a fool.

Ed convinced himself that there's no possible interpretation other than rejection and humiliation, and that's what he deserves. Sure, he could go back and check, but if he did and found Stede just chilling on his bunk bed like “oh sorry mate, I don’t actually want to gayly run off with you anymore, I hoped you’d just kind of go away“, that’d be fate worse than death. So it’s better to assume the unspoken, and get out.

Izzy's reaction back on the ship buried the rest of that coffin.

Izzy, Ivan and Fang strike me as very straight-forward with Ed. If Izzy doesn't like something, he's not gonna hold back or dance around the issue, he takes Ed aside and tells him how it is. And in turn, Ed is quite open to criticism, if it's delivered straight to his face. He might make scary eyes at you, but he's willing to try and make things better. In a way, they also talk it through like a crew, although they don't dig deeper for the roots of those issues.

But when Izzy goes "waa waa namby pamby pining for his boyfriend", this is the biggest slap in Ed's face he could deliver. No one laughs at Blackbeard, especially not his trusty assistant, who previously looked up to him as a sea god of sorts, who was literally ready to leave for being disrespectful to Ed before. So Ed's reflexes kick back again, and he resorts to violence to stop the mockery as he's used to.

And then, when he's left alone, the crew starts calling out for him to perform another song. There's something haunting about this moment, how you can feel his paranoia flaring up again, shifting his perception towards the people he thought he could trust.

He trusted Stede, he trusted Jack, he trusted Izzy, and all of them betrayed that trust one way or another. If the one person who allegedly cared about him so so much just left him hanging on a dock like an idiot, and his own right hand man feels okay with belittling him, then what about the rest of them? Who can he trust at this point? Who's not a fickle crowd?

Maybe all of them disliked him all along. Maybe they laugh at him behind his back. Maybe they're frivolously calling him Eddie and demanding another performance, because he's the ship clown. Maybe all of them need to be scared into their place again, with chopped toes and pointed guns.

I think this is confirmed by the way he looks at Lucius before throwing him overboard. Lucius comes to him talking about the talent show, and Ed gives him a bitter smile that says "I know what you're doing. I know exactly how you feel about me. I see it now, and I won't be made fun of anymore".

The way he calls the crew "Bonnet's playthings" too, not only objectifying them back into their role of ship's workers, but also separating himself from ever being friendly with these people. They can't hurt him anymore if they're some insignificant belongings of another person he has no feelings towards.

And after he's back to being the Blackbeard, the man who's feared but feels no fear, no rejection and no embarrassment, he sobs uncontrollably, now with even less emotional outlets for his pain, frustration and confusion. Probably certain that he will never meet another person who could love someone like him, whom Ed could love and trust back.

I know we like, jokingly blame everything that happened on Izzy, but he’s not the only one who needs the Blackbeard’s image. Neither of them have the social leverage without it, and Ed would need sooo much therapy before he can fully stop relying on being the Blackbeard, like he wanted in ep 9.

All in all, Ed's already fragile trust in people is now fucked beyond belief, and if Stede really wants to convince him his love confessions still means shit, he'll have to work his ass off for it. And i'm excited to see how it goes.

So, confession time, when I was twelve I was like Huuuuge Kishigo shipper and that’s how I for the first time found my way tot he wonderful world of fanfics and fanart, but now as an adult I obviously see how toxic and problematic the ship- HAHAHAH GOT YOU GOOD! In this house I don’t grow and don’t become better.

Anyway, now that I’ve dusted off my almost 20 years old Kishigo ship-sails, let me just say how pleasantly surprised and absolutely hopeful I am about their dynamic in the reboot, based only off the short clip in the opening. Because we all know that the original Kishigo dynamic was fucked up as hell. It would be really funny and enjoyable most of the time and then briefly take a sharp turn to completely fucked up and then return back to the genuinely funny like nothing had happened. Oh early 2000s you were truly a different time and Ichigo’s three weed smoking boyfriends were all very much trapped in their 90s boyfriend harem archetypes. The gentleman. The tsundere with a heart of gold. The actual psychopath.

(As an aside, remember how fucked up it was that every girl with several suitors always had to have one of them being an actual sex offender. Like that was just a thing. Remember when we as pubescent girls said shit like “I wish I was raped by character X” like that was just a normal thing to say. And we would all blush and giggle. How did any of us survive puberty in the early 2000s?)

Getting back on topic, the fact that they replaced the nonconsensual kiss in the intro with Kisshu just jumpscaring Ichigo fills me with hope that they have gone the sensible route and toned down the uncomfrotable intensity of Kisshu’s “crush” and maybe kept him as an annoying flirt without it veering into disregarding Ichigo’s actual boundaries. (aside from the fact that they’re fighting obviously.)

The relationship between kisshu and Ichigo was really funny when they weren’t being weirdly sexual, and I want more of that best nemesis dynamic from them.

I want Ichigo and Kisshu to immediately have the very special kind of chemistry that only two people who understand each other at their base clown level can have, the kind of where they immediately dumb each other down and truly bring out the least dignified version of each other that there is.

The kind of where they both think that they are L and Light from that Death Note opening, standing on those colour-coded pillars, the only equals to each other’s genius, expect that they’re both dumb and make each other actively dumber. Casual strangers on the street describe them as “those two best friends who were yelling at each other in the park again.”

The kind where they will both ditch much more important tasks to fistfight each other in the 7/11 parking lot. Both of their teammates are begging them to please just focus on the mission and ignore the other, but the clown music taking over their minds the closer their proximity is to each other is too strong. Nobody thinks their rivalry is impressive expect them. They also know stupid amount of useless information about each other because they cannot help but overshare a weird amount of personal and emotional information to each other while punching each other in the face. One time while fighting Kisshu accidentally teleported them both inside a movie theatre. They were both so tired that they decided to take break and watch the movie together. It was okay, Kisshu thought the spacecraft in the movie looked stupid and unpractical, Ichigo didn’t like how only female character was a love interest, but they both agreed that the special effects were good.

Aoyama-kun, being the saint that he is, understands that sometimes a girl needs time with her alien nemesis. He just wishes that it was less often in the middle of their date-night.

The WOF Love Interest slander has made me think about it. What would be my ideal love interests for each Wings of Fire protagonist?

Clay - Keep him without a solid one, he can have minor flings but honestly I like how the books kept him single and made it pretty clear Peril’s crush was one-sided. I don’t personally headcanon him as aromantic or anything I just think him not having a love interest is more useful and interesting to the character dynamics and the story than having one would be.

Tsunami - As I have previously stated, pathetic malewife ( gender-neutral as usual for the bisexual queen ) or equally as tough dragon who has a soft spot for Tsunami and she has one for them. I like how Riptide is the first person Tsunami meets but not in the way the books portray it, it shouldn’t just be “first male of the same tribe as her now they are dating” I feel “this was the first person I felt I could relate to on all the things I never knew why I did and you taught me so much but never used me for being a princess or forced me to be a certain way thank you”

Glory - Okay girlboss and her hitman bodyguard is cute, kinda reminds me of Yor and Loid Forger in a way but also the age gap has to go Tui how’d you fuck up the timeline that bad 😭😭 I don’t actually like how Deathbringer is written either I kinda would want more of a serious to outsiders but playful slowburn when alone with eachother. I feel like Glory wouldn’t actually get with anyone until she’s an adult because she would be so focused on her career BUT GOD GET A MAN OR A WOMAN OR WHATEVER IDC WHO IS YOUR AGE PLEASE DONT MESS UP THE TIMELINE AND IMPLY STRANGE AGE GAPS IT RUINS SHIPS

Starflight - Tbh… I love him and Fatespeaker nerdy quiet boyfriend and his bundle of energy nerdy girlfriend, just crank it up to 11 I want more I don’t care if she’s annoying it’s fun I just wish they did more with it it was so cute :(

Sunny - The aromantic queen.

Moonwatcher - Everytime I heard her worrying about “oh gosh oh me should I choose the nice funny guy who is nothing but kind to me or the nasty racist man who keeps telling me who hates me because I’m a nightwing” makes me want to rip my hair out. If you can’t tell love triangles are often poorly written and both choices are not equal. Solution: Give Qibli more apparent flaws and maybe don’t make Winter dragon racist it makes the bad boy character a lot less of a bad boy and more of “why are you giving this man the time of day Moon he hates you” energy. That was a rant and a half but basically balance it out more and in the end I don’t want her to decide. She can have some romance drama on the side but I feel like she could never choose, or she could go poly or open relationship but who knows. If I could throw Qibli and Winter in the love interest trash bin I would give Moon a quiet gf with an interesting backstory or something like that, someone who doesn’t have a bombardment of thoughts and is calm and peaceful and Moon can just chill with her. Or honestly if Arc 2 wanted to focus on plot more, discard love interest for Moon until Arc 3.

Winter and Qibli - Stated before. Honestly would prefer if Winter didn’t have a love interest at all and worked through his own issues with his friends where as I’m a little more open to Moon and Qibli personally I’m not the biggest fan. I think Qibli is another character like Clay that I can’t see any story reasons to actually give a love interest until after Arc 2.

Peril - Realize she doesn’t need Clay to love her to be worth anything and slowly come to realize to learn to love herself, maybe she gets to be with someone as an adult but after lots of healing and being able to separate her worth as a person from a partner’s love. <3

Turtle - I like how he has a crush on Kinkajou and how Anemone kind of ruins it but I don’t want it to go anywhere and I want he and Kinkajou to have more discussions about it and for them eventually decide not to get together. Or something like that I can’t really see Turtle with anyone but I liked that storyline.

Blue and Cricket: I actually really enjoy this ship and I want them to be happy, make it less sudden though Tui I stg they went way too fast but I do enjoy pathetic little boy x nerdy girl it is a very cute dynamic and made arc 3 tolerable in the first half for me.

Sundew: No complaints. Willow is amazing, I just wish she had more of a role in the story.

Snowfall: I think she and Lynx are cute but they do also work as friends, I don’t think she needs a love interest. Single girlboss.

Luna: I like Luna and Swordtail a lot actually Arc 3 had pretty good romance for Wings of Fire standards, I just wish it was fleshed out more before Luna’s POV book. Her thoughts and memories of Swordtail also made her book tolerable I’m ngl the plot was lacking but Luna and her awesome thoughts and mind and memories was super cool!!

I could also include the humans, the winglet characters and Darkstalker but I don’t want too!! Fuck the humans I hate them!!! Also I acknowledge I didn’t include any MLM ships in here at all but that’s kind of just because most male characters have pretty solid ships already which are primarily straight, which is sad that there isn’t a lot of LGBT rep in Wings of Fire besides Sundew x Willow and side characters Pineapple x Jambou(? He is so irrelevant I forgot his name help 😭 ) and arguably Sky/Peril. Maybe after Winter works through his angst he can get an emo boyfriend that would be my heart and soul.

You know it has happened to me that even in bkdk fics, it's one of the ships that I can't enjoy, I have read bkdk fics and although the talent of many fics writers amazes me, when it's about this ships they're almost the same and above all they try the relationship in the same way as in the canon but with a romantic relationship, for example bk is still annoying and idiot, gets angry with Midoriya uses his quirk or verbally denigrates him (because that's his personality and way of showing appreciation) or even those fics where we are supposed to see emotional growth always end with Midoriya forgiving or understanding all bk's problems and justifying his actions, I'm not lying the other day I read a multi-chapter fic about Midoriya and bk becoming a couple and bk wasn't a reliable partner at the first change would get angry or react angrily to later regret it, he demands Midoriya to tell him everything and finally at one point he even ends the relationship because he can't live thinking about Midoriya dying and leaves him by phone when Izuku had just woken up in a hospital bed. Then there is how Midoriya's significant relationships are left aside because the only center of his character is bk but when we talk about bk, Kirishima and other people are important to him and he would never leave them even for Izuku.

What I want to get at is that these fics don't seek to tell a romance but simply that a character is the center of everything and that Midoriya endures and defends a relationship that is unhealthy, they have all the red flags, emotional dependence, isolation of the person with their friends and family, verbal and physical violence that ends in an apology and a promise to change and the victim justifying the abuser. It's the type of fics that when you finish reading them instead of being expectant for more or excited, you're left mentally drained because it's the type of relationship that you would hate in real life but in fics they seek to pass off as romantic, that the lack of communication and violent reactions are for some reason funny and the blame is always shared although one of the parties is always making an effort while the other does nothing, I don't understand how even in fics there can't be a more or less good dynamic between the characters.

I get that. Unfortunately like all ships that have elements that people consider problematic, there are some fans who don’t see Katsuki’s behavior as anything bad and as such try to pass it off as something cute. A relationship, whether friendly or romantic, is supposed to involve growth and care. You want to see the two characters together. For Katsuki, that involves learning to treat Izuku as an equal. Both canon and the fics you’re talking about fail to do this.

Well, I think I misrepresented myself here – sister/sister (and to a lesser degree brother/sister) is particularly intolerable to me (maybe b/c I’m an older sister to a sister). But in general I do find most sibling stuff falls b/w actively repulsive to funny-gross to sorta meh. I guess the things that attract people to sibling incest (e.g. s/d) are just not ideas I’m interested in (I’m not into incest per se, and things like soulmates or excessive obsession are things I find icky even in non-incest contexts) – so that's that.

The other thing is, and I know I’m super weird on this, I don’t think dad/son is necessarily unhealthier or “worse.” I find dad/son more compelling bc the (fantastical and imo boring) illusion of equality that makes sibling ships more palatable just doesn’t exist. And the inequality in a dad/son ship, in addition to what we think of as "power imbalance," entails asymmetry insofar that the parent and the child approach each other from radically different positions. E.g. thinking about John/Dean -- the metaphor we always use for Dean is that he loves John as his god, almost --- but for John, how does he love Dean? as a version of his younger self*? as an extension of himself? a person whose entire existence depends on him? a person he literally made and raised and knew for his whole life? I'm not a parent myself, but I have parents (lol), and we've all heard parents speak very movingly about how it feels to have brought a child into the world, etc --- and that fundamental difference makes their relationship fascinating, because, in a romantic/sexual context, how do you articulate what these feelings are, to yourself or to the other? And how do you even track the transformation of this reciprocal but qualitatively different devotion from what's normal and natural to what's unethical?

Relatedly, one of the things that I think about often is how parental relationships inherently necessitate physical interaction in ways that are more unusual in sibling relationships (i.e. the transition over time from a parent literally having to interact w/their children's bodies in extremely invasive ways to keep them alive to older children having to do the very same thing to their ailing parents) --- and how this weird relationship to time and the asymmetry arising from it allows room for vulnerability and safety and trust that’s impossible in a sibling relationship.

tell us about how you ship lane and ethan, cause how i see is lane is very obsessed with him and thats of course the romantic hate vibes. in my mind is basically the same dinamic as lego batman and lego joker, but i wanna know your take

So I’ve been really sitting on this question for most of the day because I have a lot to say about this.

There’s more under the cut, but the short answer is I ship them together mostly because how I view them as Narrative Foils who are both fixated/obsessed with each other (for different but equally interesting reasons). But also, it’s not outright hate they harbor (at least not in Rogue Nation, in Fallout that is more accurate), Ethan understands Lane’s motivations even if he despises the man’s actions, and Lane is very much interested in Ethan’s potential as an anarchist/terrorist.

I think it’s interesting you cite Lego Batman and Joker’s dynamic as the frame of reference for Your interpretation of Lane x Ethan, and that’s totally valid. I’ve not seen lego batman but what I understand is that that dynamic is romantically coded but played more cartoonishly, which is how I initially viewed Lane x Ethan.

You can absolutely play to the concept comedically, I think there is something inherently funny in shipping a hero with a villain (your mileage may vary.) But for me what draws me to actually writing fic is the angst potential of loving or lusting after someone who is ideologically opposed to you. I think, and reasonable people are free to disagree with my opinion, that Ethan as a character harbors dark thoughts and feelings, but for several reasons lets them go. 1) He understands that there are consequence in giving into his impulsive anger (see: MI3 when he dangles Owen Davian from a fucking plane, which directly results in his own wife getting kidnapped) The idea that Ethan could never turn is something that floats around in the fandom, and while it’s true to say Ethan would never turn (it’s just something imbued into his character by now) I think we don’t explore the “why” of that enough. Ethan has a support system, where Lane does not.

Ethan’s team, whoever they happen to be in any movie, are central to how Ethan interacts with the world he’s always trying to save. Ethan loses his entire team in the first film and that informs every decision he makes for the rest of his life. He wants out of the IMF, but he keeps getting pulled back in. He loses his team, his wife, his protégé and ultimately his ability to live a normal civilian life. But Luther, and Benji and whoever happens to stay on his team, he cares about them, they are his family. We don’t view his prioritizing of his family as selfish, because that’s what people perceive is a normal thing to do. But that prioritization always comes at the cost of the mission. Rogue Nation and Fallout lean into this heavily. Ethan, if properly provoked, he will do impulsive or selfish things (even if those selfish things also happen to benefit other people). The caveat to that is that his friends are able to pull him back, or at least call him out and warn him from going too far on their behalf.

Also, Ethan has a history of rogue behavior that even if it is in the service of the “greater good”, is the justification that the villains of the last three films ultimately rely on for their own actions. So, while we the audience understand Ethan to be the good guy, in universe this is the exact reason all these spy organizations fear/distrust Ethan.

Comparatively speaking, Ethan is more well-adjusted than Solomon Lane, because despite the things he goes through, he doesn’t let his crisis of faith ever deter him from doing what he thinks is right. In contrast, Lane lets his anger drive him into letting the world burn. His anger is destructive, but it serves his purpose of enacting revenge. But he is much more detached emotionally, and there are multiple ways to interpret Lane as a character, but I see him as someone who doesn’t want to admit he may have emotions. Which is understandable as again, he was also a former field agent. The reason he keeps Ilsa around is that he sees potential in her, potential to see the world as he sees it. Vinter speaks at Ethan, asking aloud: “What does he see in you, I wonder?”. While Vinter may not see what Lane is looking for in Ethan, the fact that Lane doesn’t order his outright death is telling, at least to Vinter. (Although that is not enough to stop Vinter from trying regardless.)

There are parts of the script that where cut out of the final film that makes this dynamic more obvious, rather than the subtext it is in the narrative. And while, when analyzing their dynamic I can only rely on what makes it into the final product, the fact that Lane wants to “corrupt/torture/seduce” Ethan has always been intended. However one chooses to read that is up to the viewer, especially because this interpretation of their dynamic relies on subtext.

I think, personally, it’s interesting to explore this dynamic as basically like this: Lane: Aren’t you tired of Being Nice, don’t you just want to go apeshit?

Ethan:

it's about the ideological conflict, and the begrudging understanding. Lane and Ethan function as narrative foils for each other, where they could have turned out as each other, had circumstances been different. “The Same thing that’s wrong with me is wrong with you (Derogatory)”

So that’s my thoughts.

Okay, so not to be the ship police lol, but seeing folks start to ship Monica & Carol gets nothing but a bombastic side eye from me… absolutely not lol.

Look, I’m a just say it, though it didn’t really bother me at the time, and though I enjoy CM1 for what it was, and have defended it more than once (and will continue to do so), in hindsight I’m not a fan of the choices TPTB made with the introduction of Monica. After multiple discussions with my buddy, after seeing the way (some of) the fandom treats/reacts to adult Monica, I wish that they’d never brought her into the MCU as a child. I wish they’d never had her calling someone that should’ve been her peer Auntie. I wish that entire relationship dynamic didn’t exist. Fandom calling Carol her mom now leaves a bad taste in my mouth, when I used to think it was kinda funny.

And look, I’ve read fics where Maria/Carol are the background/side couple and it’s cute and I liked them - it totally worked. However, it kind of irritates my soul that people act like this character, who by all accounts should be her peer/co-worker, is her mother in canon and not fanon, and they are dead serious. That’s why people are mad about the ship online - not because of the age gap, or because Carol knew her when she was a kid, or anything else, but because they really seem to consider Carol to be as equal a parent to her as Maria. They really really do. And like, I’m gonna need some proof of that lol, because even in the movie she calls her Aunite not mom. It’s just not a good look, like it has negative connotations to me or something lol.

You know what, it’s like when people act like Steve was Sam’s kindly benefactor who plucked him from obscurity to work with him and taught him everything he knows. (It’s more rare maybe but I have seen people do that, especially people who just cannot seem to be able to admit that Sam was Steve’s partner and friend.) Well, no, Steve was his co-worker and buddy, they weren’t in the Big Brother Program. He didn’t teach Sam everything he knows - not in the MCU or the comics. Let’s not rewrite their relationship because you want to call Steve his mentor, because I wouldn’t even say that was accurate. Like don’t make this weird. Okay I’m rambling now lol, and I might delete this because it’s hard to exactly express what about this annoys me so much, but people are… weird about Monica (and Sam) and their connections (real or imagined) to these other heroes, and I don’t care for it.

Also, not for nothin’ but what is with the MCU fandom and trying to give people who already have parents or even parental figures, new parents. Like with Peter. Aunt May was right there. Not invisible, but very active in his life, but to hear everyone tell it Tony was his father figure? Ummm no he wasn’t 🙃

I don’t know, maybe when/if they explain why Monica & Carol fell out in the new movie, it will change my mind about the introducing her as a kid thing, but I can’t imagine how…

Full disclaimer that I’ve never watched the West Wing but have always kinda wanted to because I love that sort of old timey witty American drama, even if it’s politics I don’t fully understand and it is a full testament to your talent and writing prowess that I now really feel like watching the show to get all the references from your fic 🙈Alas, it’ll have to wait since I have an exam but I shall get to it right after hopefully!

I’ve read this first chapter about 5 times ( I am not joking), I can’t even explain why I love it so much! You’ve combined two series’ with such finesse! There’s so much depth and character even within this fanfictiony world and I can’t even begin to grasp how sexy it is? The whole premise and how it’s so befitting for Kanthony and the rest of the Bridgerton clan too!

I now get your references for the characters and it’s funny how initially before reading, I just assumed Anthony and Kate would be modelled on Josh and Donna (since they were the only two characters I sort of knew from the West Wing) but your interpretation of them contesting for President is way cooler and makes for so much more angst and drama.

as for watching the west wing, we're doing our best to make sure it's not necessary to have watched the show in order to get the fic. if you have, you probably recognize some scenes (directly ripped off from scenes and dialogue in the show), and some character sketches, but beyond a few elements of plot, background, and surface-level characterization, this fic universe will feel a bit different from the show. we're borrowing the universe, the idealism, and the feel-good, hard-but-worth-it political reality constructed in the show. it's a wild, escapist political AU, all in good fun. we hope you'll like it! :)

i find it interesting you say you thought the dynamic between kanthony would be a josh/donna type deal, because i did consider that when i began writing it. it was sort of my go-to, but then i realized i've seen the boss/secretary dynamic many times in shows and it's gotten a bit stale for me. i've also noticed that oftentimes, the female love interest is put in the assistant-position, which to me feels a bit antiquated. at the same time, it's hard for me to imagine anthony in donna's position because the power dynamic between anthony and kate was very different in canon, so i ended up nixing that thought because i wanted them to start off as equals.

that said, there are other bridgerton ships that could fit the dynamic really well! josh and donna are interesting because they're introduced as this enmeshed, basically-married duo that are on a slowburn, friends-to-lovers arc. i think polin could work really well with that storyline, with maybe penelope as josh to shake things up (i think colin as her assistant who switched a lot of lanes in college and career-wise could be really, really interesting, and maybe one of pen's sisters could be dead, to give that additional edge of angst to the already complicated featherington dynamics aaaaaand i better stop before i end up writing this too!).

moreover, i originally began writing this fic because i was interested in exploring a kate-tom friendship a la jed and leo. and in order to do that, i had to make kate president. and then the idea grew legs, because i actually adore the idea of kate as a thirty-something, obama-type figure who's pulled in the opposite directions of radical liberal idealism and centrist pragmatism and anthony as a jaded, conflicted, entrenched dynastic political figure who's caught in this quagmire of expectations. in a way, anthony's still conflicted about his relationship with kate in this AU because it directly conflicts with his personal ambitions and his desire to make his dad proud, so that's canon-accurate but also repackaged in a fun, fresh way.

i don't know. i think it's neat. it's a neat AU. and @folklauerate has so many great ideas and juicy bits of characterization and plot and pitch-perfect writing -- it's gonna be so good, i'm gonna scrreeeeaaaammmm.

Comparing Asaden to other ships for comedic potential

Idk about y’all but I’m desperate for asaden content rn and my brain has dug far into my memories until it found an old ship of mine that is a goldmine of asaden energy: sorayla from The Dragon Prince. Oh also, disclaimer: this is about shipping fanon for funsies lol I’m going very off the rails here. This is mostly comedic “enemies with romantic tension” stuff. There’s another ship at the end of the post too. Definitely putting this under a cut bc I am more capable of shame than Denji tbh. Anyways so let’s-a go!

Sorayla!

Soren is like, so Denji. He’s more jock and like, wholesomely stupid? But also he’s mire of a jerk in that he has no morals ngl, and his ego is humongous. Rayla for this is Asa, she’s pretty Yoru-like too but just cringefail and bitchy enough to be pretty Asa lolol. But, where they really shine is their dynamic together:

Their first meeting is him attacking her. He’s about to attack her while she’s asleep, but then a moonbeam falls upon her face and it looks like he thinks she’s pretty?? But the point is she’s too vulnerable for him to kill her without guilt so he’s like “Sis can u wake her up… So it’s like, sporty y’know” which DOES make me feel very Denji about him

Anyways, they fight on rather equal grounds after that and she of course doesn’t respond well to that whole mess. Rayla’s character arc is about facing her problems, her flaws and figuring out her identity and getting over social judgement & being an outcast!!

Anyways. They’re funny, is what I’m getting at. Cringefail yet murder power duo. Somehow matches the level of asaden murderous intent and dead braincells but while being more functional.

This one will be quicker. They’re much different from asaden character wise and dynamic wise too, but a similar thing to sorayla where “she looks at me like she wants my head on a pike, omg I need her to kiss me” happens lolol

Maomao is just wholy uninterested and asocial, which, yeah, Asa much. Jinshi’s cute curiosity in Maomao is pretty Denji. But then it’s kinda like asaden reverse roles because Jinshi is tired af and bitter and childish and petulant, but he acts very elegant and flirty in public & for Maomao (at first), so it’s kinda like Asa & Yoru trying to woo Denji Lmfao. And then Maomao being untinterested and blunt af is very Denji when he isn’t happy with Asa, like when he wanted to avoid her and cuss her out just before she asked him out on a date. Anyways look at this

Tell me that isn’t Asa looking at Denji & Denji being ecstatic over getting any sort of crumb of attention from a girl. YOU CAN’T THAT GUY IS JINSHI’S FATHER FIGURE. HE HAS HIROFUMI YOSHIDA ENERGY. IMAGINE YOSHIDA WALKING UP TO ASA LIKE “Please stop insulting Denji he rants about you 24/7, he rambles about you being wrong and gives 3 hours long point by point counter-arguments all while blushing and seething. It’s disgusting and I’m not paid enough to be his friend. Please. Do it for my sanity.”

(Also a lot of these will be hot takes within the Byler community but may be agreed among other fans idk I’m just in this corner of the fandom 90% of the time)

Steve actually IS that good a character? Like I understand it can be annoying when he clogs up every tag and ship but there’s a reason he’s that popular. He was basically DESIGNED to be the fandom’s favourite and it worked, I don’t think anything’s wrong with that. I adore this funky bi himbo and his kids and lesbian bestie and loser bf. And I *will* continue to project parental issues on him based on like 4 lines of dialogue bc frankly in this fandom that’s so far from the biggest leap we’ve made it’s not even funny. He’s my second favourite character and if he dies I will be genuinely inconsolable.

The only Byler proof I need is the s3 finale moving scenes. Finn’s acting choices in the El vs Will scenes, the parallels to the quarry scene, the shot of him looking back at the house? That’s all it took to solidify it for me. And the master doc is fun but I do think a solid 70% of the stuff on there is a huge stretch and is honestly harming more than helping our case lmao. If I want to convince people I just use that one scene and it works 90% of the time.

If you ship H*rringrove I think you’re genuinely a bad person. He’s a racist abuser and I’m glad he’s dead <3

STEDDIE IS SO CUTE MY FAV STEVE SHIP EASILY? It’s such a fun dynamic to work with, Eddie is CLEARLY queer coded much more than certain other characters we will get to, and the tropes that emerged in the fics post s4 were super fun and also SO interesting. Genuinely some Steddie fics I’ve read are just some of the best fics I’ve read period. (If anyone wants recs ESPECIALLY if you love a time loop fic hmu).

I wouldn’t hate them bringing back Eddie if they could pull it off in a way that made it seem genuinely planned and not just fan service. His death actually did piss me off (not just bc I was sobbing lmao) bc it seemed so rushed, and only getting to see Dustin’s reaction just felt like either terrible writing or a very purposeful lose thread. Also I’m still thinking about the profile picture colours bc I feel like we moved on WAY too fast.

Stonathan is fine. Good even but I just don’t see the appeal the way the rest of y’all do. Same with Ronance, I just genuinely prefer their dynamic as friends. I do love Stoncy in theory but post s3 I just don’t see it really working anymore, early Stoncy fics still hit though.

Lumax>Elumax>>>Elmax. The girls are adorable together ofc but I think Lumax is easily the best written relationship in the show rn and completely ditching it just seems odd to me? Obviously ship whatever you want I just can’t imagine not liking them together? I’m not blanket stating it’s for racist reasons but we all know Lucas is treated like dirt by the fandom in a way none of the other kids are

Dustin is my least favourite of the kids. I still love him, I just find him by far the least interesting. I obviously adore him and Steve but I feel like separating him from the party really has put him at a disadvantage these last few seasons. I’m really hoping the loss of Eddie will take him in an interesting direction though.

I will be genuinely upset if Jancy aren’t endgame but also I’m equally worried their issues won’t get addressed next season, idk they were my fav couple in s1/2 so I just hold them very close to my heart.

Flickergate is the superior Bylergate, especially if I had to pick one to actually happen in the show, it’s so romantic it makes me want to pass out.

Haruka/Minori! - The moment I saw the opening cutscene it felt like watching a child’s first cartoon crush except fast forward and Minor and Haruka actually become friends and work together and are equals and huh???? Minori just gets so blush around Haruka and like remembers everything about her, and Haruka opening up again just because of Minoris dreams is the gayest fuckin thing. It’s just pining lol, so wholesome :3

Shizuku/Airi! - Your honor they satisfy my opposites attract trope. Beautiful and mature meets cute and fireball-like! I love their dynamic and how Airi is like an angry chihuahua that Shizuku just gracefully restraints her and gives her kisses lol luv em

Akito/Toya - They’re just so iconic, all of their interactions are amazing and Toya is just so SO very gay. It’s just something the fandom has completely accepted and I’m all here for it! XD

An/Kohane - Again, a staple of Proseka at this point, something about these girls is just “YOUR TOGETHER. NOW. ITS HAPPENING” and I LOVE it lol. I love the confidence and shy girl mixture, and it plays off of AkiToya well!

Aight are probably gonna hate me for this one but I have 2 opinions:

1) I like RuiEmu and TsuNene more than RuiNene and TsuEmu, I just think they’re dynamics are really cute together. I also love them switch around though, I just have a preference!

2) RuiKasa is really good but people are underselling the fun dynamic that is EmuNene

3) With that being said I have basically admitted to liking every possible pairing between these four so I must admit…

Ena/Mizuki - This one has ALWAYS been a fav of mine! I just love both of their designs and characters and singing voices together and they’re just so cute imo, I don’t have much do a reason further XD

Mizuki/Mafuyu - I just find their dynamic interesting tbh. I think romantically it’s a bit iffy but I kinda like how toxic it is somehow? It’s all just very intriguing between them lol

Ena/Mafuyu - Same reason as above, but ina different way. Where it’s intriguing between Mizuki and Mafuyu because of the Dassin was mixed with the apathy, I like how Ena and Mafuyu are both apathetic in some way and just show that very differently. Just really interesting stuff lol

Now before you ask why Kanade isn’t here it’s because I frankly don’t like her enough to give her a ship?? Like Shiho and Mafuyu have grown on me, and even if Kohane isn’t my fav character either the staple of her and An is just so big that I ship it, and since Kanade is the only character I don’t like that’s left I haven’t had it in my heart to ship her with anybody. Lol sorry.

Now I just wait for the hate to rolllll in :3
