in the future, Braiding Sweetgrass will be assigned to all students to read in school, and mostly they will hate it, because it seems to them like poorly structured rambling about nature and vignettes from the author's life. Soooooooo boring!

We will struggle to explain to them: no, no, this book was actually completely revolutionary for its time. When Kimmerer talks about the honorable harvest, learning to listen to the teachings of the plants, understanding nature as animate and alive, and the relationship of reciprocity and mutual dependence between humans and other life forms, these are ideas that were genuinely new and mind-blowing to us when we were young.

It wasn't just those in power that saw nature as "Resources" or some kind of mechanical system that would be better off without human interference—almost no one else knew another way to think. Yes, yes, we knew about symbiosis, but we hardly ever applied it to ourselves. Kimmerer is serious when she says her cultural perspective was almost wiped out; the culture we inherited as children literally didn't have the concepts she is talking about, and that's why the book was so important!

We will tell the students that it would have been weird even among "environmentalists" of the time to think of trees and insects as your family. I mean, well, yes, we knew that everything was related, but we thought Charles Darwin was the first to come up with that. You don't understand, we will say, most of these ideas about living in right relationship with nature would have been thought of as extra-scientific, sentimental or spiritual crap.

"Did you just not know where food and clothes came from?" they will ask, with eyebrows raised. Yes, but back then, food was mostly grown in enormous fields of only one crop where everything else had been killed with chemicals. We didn't really think of agricultural environments as "ecosystems"—"nature" was a separate thing—I mean yeah, we harvested logs from forests, but that was different. No, we basically thought Earth was divided into "human uses" and "nature," and that people shouldn't be in the "nature" parts. No, really!

The students will be fascinated and ask things like "But what about parks?" "Would a hay field be nature or human uses?" "How about pollinator gardens?" "What about the ocean?" and we will try to explain to them that we really just didn't think that hard about it

Honestly he's just glad you aren't as scary as some of the other children in the manor

Most, if not all of the children that live in the manor are there because there was quite literally no other choice for them

They come from such bad homes with such bad caretakers, it's not shocking that most of them have learned to protect themselves by any means necessary

So while Toby understands, holy shit do they scare him <//3

So seeing a kid that is allowed to still just be a kid makes him happy

He finds you quite fun to be around

He loves hearing you get excited with the things you're passionate about

And he loves how silly you can be!

You are one of the easiest kids to talk to, so he uses you for intel on the other children for things such as gifts for the holidays

He's also thankful that you are so truthful and don't like breaking the rules

It really helps lower the stress levels in the house

You're a good kid

That's about the extent of his opinion on you

He likes that you're a goody two-shoes, because it makes his job as the "secondary dad" of the manor waaay easier

"Alright, which one of you spilled water on the carpet" tim asks, eying the two children sitting in front of him

"Im sorry! It was me, i didn't mean it, i swear it was i mistake!" You blurt out fearfully, hoping to not get in trouble

"Woah, relax kid, it's just water. We can clean it up easily"

He's also glad that you're one less kid he'll have to worry about sneaking out, running away, or getting in general trouble

Other than that, you guys don't really have a relationship

You might talk from time to time, and he'll be there for fatherly support and comfort

But that's about it

Hoodie

He's not exactly the greatest with kids

He doesn't dislike them, but he isn't really a kid guy

He can handle teens though, and with you being such an easy kid to handle, you manage to make his good list

If he sees you around, he'll wave, he'll get you things that remind him of you, and he's generally just more tolerant of you

Like if any of the other kids asked him to make them breakfast, he'd probably be like "oooh i actually juuuust started cleaning up sorry"

But if you or sally asked him to he'd be like "omg of course, you little angels 🥰"

Like tim, you won't really have a relationship outside of him just being more tolerant of you

He's considered the cooler uncle, and sometimes a big brother amongst the kids so he won't be able to provide the fatherly comfort that Tim does

But he CAN provide some brotherly shoulder pats or cool uncle McDonald's

And maybe, just maaaaaybe a hug every now and then

Eyeless Jack

Ej finds children quite bothersome

They get in the way of his work, they are noisy and they are messy

Three things he will not tolerate

But he was very pleasantly surprised with you

He doesn't mind teenagers as much, as they are much less noisy and messy than younger children, but he does have his issues with teenagers as well

But while you are sitting on his medical bed, waiting for a bandaid for your cut arm, you are actually very pleasent to be around

You came in in a bit of a panic, fearing your arm might be permanently damaged, but you were able to calm down as Ej took the time to explain that you were ok, as well as walking you through everything he was doing

You were very nice and quiet, and quite polite actually

You are a good kid in Ej's books

When he sees you around the manor, he makes a point to show at least some sort of sign of polite recognition to you, instead of just walking past with a blank expression

Whether it be a small smile, a nod, or a wave, just something to let you know that he thinks you are ok

Espcially with how anxious you seem to get, he knows that it will likely help you to know he doesn't hate you

Daddy Issues | Bradley ‘Rooster’ Bradshaw

Summary: Reader’s meets her father for the first time in the Top Gun program only problem is he has no idea who she is, well…that’s not her only problem.

A/N: Readers Callsign is ‘Darwin’

Out of all the places in the world she had no idea why finding him here was so surprising. After being called back to 'Top Gun' Y/N found herself in The Hard Deck with 'Hangman' and 'Coyote' looking at the man she had spent years hoping to meet.

Y/N was 14 when she found the box while looking through the attic, it was filled with pictures of her mother and a man she had never seen before and letters of the romantic kind. Looking on the back she found they her mothers name accompanied by ,what she assumed was the man's name, Pete Mitchell and the date just on a little under a year before she was born.

Y/N had grown up with her mother until the age of five when she and her stepfather were married. Jim was a nice guy, a great father even but that didn't stop Y/N from wanting to know who her biological father was and one look at this picture and she knew.

She became almost consumed with finding out everything she could on the man in the photos and was a bit disappointed when she couldn't find anything past 1986, about some kind of mission he flew, though there wasn't a lot of information that could lead her to were he was.

What little she did have she clung too until the day she turned 18 and informed her mother that she would be joining the Navy instead of going to medical school and following in the footsteps of her stepfather.

"What do you mean you're joining the military?" Her mother asked as if it were the most ridiculous thing she had ever heard.

"I'm not going to become a doctor." Y/N replied. "I know this isn't exactly what you wanted but you've controlled everything in my life and I think it's time I start making my own choices-."

"This is just stress talking honey, I know I've been a bit too strict with you when it comes to your future but that's only because I want what's best for you." She cut her off.

"I know that mom but what is best for me right now isn't trying to become a doctor."

"Well it doesn't have to happen RIGHT NOW, plenty of people take a gap year if that's what you nee-."

"No. mom you're not listening."

"I am listening to how you plan to throw everything you've worked your whole life for on a whim."

"It's not a whim mom, this is something I've wanted for a long time."

"Since when?" She scoffed rolling her eyes. "Since when have you wanted this?"

"Since I found out who my father is." Y/N admitted. "It started off just wanting to know who he was but after I dug a bit more I couldn't think about doing anything else with my life."

"That's what this is about?"

"Not entirely but somewhere down the line I would like to know more about him, meet hi-."

"Y/N I can't let you throw your life away for a man who doesn't even know you exist."

"What?"

"Your father was not the kind of man that was ready to be a father-"

"You didn't give him a chance?"

"-I knew that it was for the best that I raised you without him."

"You don't know that."

"I do know that, the life he lived gone for months at a time, always had one foot out the door. What kind of father would he have been for you?"

"I guess we'll never know because you never gave him the chance?!" Y/N shouted back at her mother. "God this is so like you. It's always your way or the highway, you were the one with one foot out the door and when you saw that you couldn't control what kind of father he might have been you bolted."

Y/N had been frustrated before but she could never remember a time when she felt this furious at her mother.

"This is just like you, you always have to be the one in control, always have to have the last say in what I wear, how I talk, what extracurricular I should take, whether I get to know my father or not?" Shaking her head at her as she looked at her with as much anger and disgust as she could muster. "You pathetic and entitled to think that there is any reason you could give to justify what you have done"

"I did what I thought was right, I have always done what I thought was best for you and yes I admit that I didn't always take you opinion into consideration but as a mother I had to make the hard choices."

"Well not anymore, I can make my own decisions now."

"Yes you can but that doesn't mean that I have to be there to watch." She said standing from her seat and approaching her daughter. "If you choose this life, you choose a life without me."

Y/N remembers packing her bags as her stepfather begged them both to stop being so stubborn and to think about what this would mean, hearing him yell at her mother for the thing she had said and done, (not knowing ways in which she parted with his stepdaughter father) She remembered the tearful goodbye between her and her stepfather, where she told him that she has and will always love him but this was something she needed to do, before driving away.

"Darwin..." Hangman called out snapping in front of her face. "Darwin."

"Yeah?" She asked turning her attention back to her two companions.

"Pool, Hangman's cheating at darts." Coyote informed before making his way over to the pool table with Hangman trailing behind informing his that 'skill isn't cheating'.

She followed them over as they started the game fighting every urge to look over to the man at the bar, this is what she wanted for years, which is why she had no idea why the thought of going over to him was more terrifying than her first time flying.

"Bradshaw, that you?" Phoenix called out causing her to curse whatever all powerful being there was in the universe. "This how I find out you're state side?"

"Yeah well I wanted to surprise you." Rooster replied removing the aviators from his face before Phoenix delivered the pool stick to his abdomen.

"Guess I surprised you right back." She replied.

This was more than she could handle at this point, normally seeing 'Rooster' again wouldn't be such a feat but the man less that 100 feet away was making it a bit hard to catch her breath.

"I'm gonna head out." She muttered to Hangman and Coyote not waiting for a reply as she started making her way to the door.

"Leaving so soon?" Penny asked from behind the bar. Walking over Y/N gave the woman a forced smile.

"Yeah, getting a bit crowded with the evening rush and all." She explained.

"Hope you're not leaving on my account." Rooster's voice cut in as he approached the bar as well. "Long time no see, Darwin. A beer Penny please." He said leaning on the bar his back to her father leaving her a perfect view over his shoulder.

"Rooster...How have you been?" She asked as Penny went to grab his beer.

"So that's how we're gonna play it? I walk in the room you bolt out the door, pretend like nothing ever happened." He asked while Y/N felt half guilty half mortified as she saw her father take somewhat of an interest in the conversation.

"Would that be such a bad thing?"

"What if I don't want to pretend it never happed?" He asked as Penny returned with his drink.

"Well then that seems like your problem Rooster." She replied. "See you Penny." She called walking away finally escaping the gaze of the two men.

"Your instructor is a top gun graduate with real world experience in every mission aspect you will be expected to master, he exploits are legendary and he is considered to be one of the finest pilots this program has ever produced. What he has to teach you may very well mean the difference between life and death, I give you Captain Pete Mitchell, callsign... Maverick."

'You have got to be shitting me.' Y/N thought to herself. No matter how good of an opportunity this was to get to know her father she couldn't help but to think about how this was also and equal opportunity to embarrass herself and disappoint him before he even knows who he is to her.

Of course Y/N was a good pilot, so was everyone else here and there was no way she was gonna reveal her identity to her father after after coming in anything less than first.

Second place, is no place at all.

Y/N sat this the other pilots as she watched them go up in group of three each failing one after the other.

Too fast, too slow, when up instead of right no matter what the mistake Maverick was always on step ahead or should she say right behind them to make the kill.

Once it was her turn to take the skies she tried her best to communicate with her wingman but they both for lack of a better term 'freaked the fuck out as soon as they saw Maverick'. Y/N knew the moment the yelling started they were dead so while Maverick was focused on making the kill she flew her plane underneath his and stayed a there. If he made a right she made a right, if he went up she went up.

"Alright Darwin you know the object of the mission is win?" Maverick asked over the radio looking around franticly for the pilot to show herself.

"I thought the object was to survive." She replied.

"Yeah I guess technically your right, but this is about surviving a dog fight, you can't just turn tail and run." He informed. Y/N slowed her plane allowing the instructor to fly over he before he placed him in her sight, watching his head whip around after hearing the tone.

"I didn't run old man," She laughed. "I've been here the whole time." She mimicked the words her spoke to Rooster with a small wave.

"I know you shoot down anything that came into your sight so I just stayed out of sight." She explained her strategy.

"Darwin..."

"Adapt to survive."

"That's impressive." Maverick complemented as Y/N fought to jump with happiness that she had been the only one to shoot him down. "If only your strategy included your wing man...They wouldn’t be dead right now." He finished wiping the smile off her face.

Heading into the lounge Y/N flopped onto the sofa folding her arms, even she knew she looked like a child throwing a tantrum right now.

"That was bullshit." She spat shaking her head. "I was the only one to shoot him down."

"Yeah but you let you wingman die." Rooster pointed out. "This mission is about team work."

"There wasn't much of a team to work with." Hangman defended. "I mean no offence to Harvard and Yale but you guys panicked, Darwin was on her own from that moment on. I think you did what you needed to do." He said placing his handing on each of her shoulders giving a gentle squeeze.

"Thanks Jake." She replied with a sigh. Rooster glared at the two, one: Not liking how close the were acting and two: hating that they both were so quick to leave their wingman behind.

"You know Darwin maybe now you'll learn that you can't just leave people behind when it best suits you." He glared at the two. "You may be able to adapt but living like that...you'll never evolve."

"God this is so like you. It's always your way or the highway,"

Glaring over to the Bradshaw, Y/N said nothing before standing up and exiting the room. As she was walking away she saw Maverick coming towards her and decided to keep walking.

"Darwin." He called out after she had past by causing her to stop and face him.

"Yes sir." She replied keeping her face as neutral as possible.

"Look I know that wasn't what you wanted to hear up there and I'm not gonna lie you remind me of me when I was in Top Gun." Maverick states shifting from one foot to the other. "But I learned pretty quickly that the target is only half the mission the other half is making sure you AND YOUR TEAM make it back to fight another day."

"Yes sir." She replied as the man reiterated what Rooster had said to her not even two minutes ago.

"That being said..." He started as a smile began to show on his face. "That was some damn good flying."

"Thank you sir." Y/N smiled. "That means a lot coming from you.”

"Hey Darwin," Coyote called out. "We're heading to 'The Hard Deck', you down?"

"Go on you guys are done for the day." Maverick encouraged with a nod. "See you tomorrow 0800."

"See you tomorrow sir." She confirmed before turning and walking away.

Sparknotes version of qBads lore?

(us Ghosties have multiple thousand pages documents trying to put shit together soooo we don't know EVERYTHING about qBad but we know some backstory so I'll just give you the basics)

qBad was an angel, what type of rank we have no idea, however at some point a couple millennia ago he fell from Grace and became a fallen angel, aka, a demon, just not a hellborn one like qMrouse.

At some point after his fall he took on a job position as a Grim Reaper after training for centuries with one of many other Grim reapers

He's dropped tons of random lore bits about his life throughout time but they're not really relevant

I'm talking, shit like; he knew Darwin, he and Foolish were both in Pompeii when Vesuvius erupted (he was on vacation, he has no idea why Foolish was there), he witnessed the extinction of the dinosaurs when he was in heaven and had a hand in it, etc.

THEN he decided to take a vacation on Quesadilla Island of his own volition to take a temporary break from his Grim Reaper responsibilities since he hadn't had a break in centuries

Although he obviously got stuck on the island and oddly enough, he still didn't even manage to escape his responsibilities having canonically been the one to help Trump, Tilin, Juana, Bobby and Max cross over the river, to guide them into the spiritual plane.

Lore on the island wise, it's mostly a lot of little things but the I'll summarize the current storyline

When the eggs disappeared qBad began torturing himself with soul vultures, having them eat at him, which caused his soul to leak out of his body and decay.

During the nuke at the end of Purgatory qBad shielded Dapper with his body, tanking a nuke hit to the back since neither of them made it onto the boat on time.

This radiation rapidly increased qBads physical decay and for MONTHS Bad was walking around practically dead but was forcing himself to keep it together because he was still needed but eventually his physical body just gave out on him.

Because of this, qBad recently died and returned to the place he visits every time his physical body dies. Although this time he was given a chance to re-enter the heavens after millennia as a demon, however he chose to return to the mortal plane because he couldn't bear to leave 'the little ones' (all the eggs) alone.

As a high ranking demon qBad is able to die and come back without physical issues but every reincarnation he has to recollect his memories.

Also, fun fact, when he dies to something he comes back immune to the thing that killed him! qBad is canonically immune to decapitation (French revolution), being burnt at the stake (Salem witch trials), being drowned with his feet in cement (the mob), falling down stairs (we don't ask) and now the soul decay+radiation poisoning combo!

His current reincarnation remembers absolutely nothing of the past year, but he does have memories.

He remembers him and Foolish in somewhere similar to Egypt (the summer home), he also recognizes qPhil although hasn't specified how and remembers qCellbit from the Hunger Games which canonically happened 10 years before the island so he has memories but they're not up to date.

roughly i was aware about q!bad's immortality plus the losing of memories when he came back, but ohohoho this gives me so much more depth

funniest bit i know is bad trying to get foolish involved in immortals lore and foolish just avoiding it like his life depends on it KEK

wait does this mean q!bad as the grim reaper saw when q!tubbo died? does it count i can't remember if q!tubbo has a soul because of Creation and all that

I'm working in earnest on Chapter 2 of my gift fic for @artsyunderstudy, Hiding Out In The Open. Which is a getting together (a little bit) later fic centred on Simon and Baz bonding over a psychology podcast. I know, I know, it's A CONCEPT. Which leads me to my share today, which is a little bit of Simon POV of some texting about said podcast:

You expect me to believe you know what ‘proxy for genetic fitness’ means? What a dick. (A true arsehole savant.) I add an emoji with a flourish before firing off my reply. something something science, something something wearing pointy shiny shoes worth more than my life is how complete wankers trick girls into liking them :peacock emoji: 🦚 so there [redacted] My phone buzzes again under my thigh, where I've tucked it out of sight. I slide it out just enough that I can see the screen and casually thumb the notification down. Have you actually been looking up how much my shoes cost, Snow? Believe me when I tell you that attracting women has less than nothing to do with my Berlutis.

Netflix's Alexander the making of a god: pretty rad actually

My judgement: 8/10

While I'm not a history professional but a humble Alexander-the-great enthusiast, and I must admit I cannot judge the historical accuracy of all bits of information presented in the documentary either, I'm still impressed by the overall production as well as the producers' intention.

Firstly, I appreciate the presentation of a "non-Europe-centric" world at the time of ATG (which is objective since this was a pre-colonialism era, where multiple powerful nations outside of Europe existed, such as ancient Persia, ancient India and ancient China) and ancient Persia is portrayed as a strong rival instead of an uncivilised foreign hostile (I laughed every time the Greeks or Persians refer to each other as "barbarians" because this was how almost every ancient kingdom viewed the others, which is funny from a modern perspective). In the same respect, Darius is given a rationale for his motivation and shown as a worthy opponent.

In regards to acting, to me this series has the most accurate casting choices so far, and even if Buck Braithwaite (the actor portraying Alexander) doesn't deliver the sort of grandiose performance one would expect to be suitable for a figure like ATG, I'm moved by how human and nuanced his version of Alexander feels.

I'm definitely pleased with how truthful the relationship between Alexander and Hephaistion is portrayed, it's probably the very first time in human cinematic history that we see a portrayal like this (confettis!).

Regarding the low ratings, I'm aware that there are primarily two concerns resulting in this: 1) conservatives being deeply upset about Alexander being explicitly bisexual. I disregard such opinion completely since I know it is decidedly conservative which I don't agree with; 2) a neutral concern about the show not offering enough historical facts / not being accurate enough. As mentioned above I'm not a history professional, so as a common viewer I can only "blindly" trust the scholars being consulted.

In fact, I found the ratings of nearly all the ATG cinematic productions to be relatively low, from the 1963 Alexander, to the 2004 Alexander, and to this Netflix production. I understand that people throughout the ages have had mountainous expectation for any portrayal of ATG since he was not only a truly competent ruler but also a cultural legacy. And there's also another layer: even though he had accomplished monumental success as a conquerer, nonetheless his conquering brought wars and suffering to the civilians. Although the geopolitical dynamic then was different from that of now, meaning the countries he conquered were not considered "less developed", still you CANNOT tell the contemporary audience, some of whom are descendants from those conquered countries, who are people of colour, that Alexander's conquering of their countries was a natural result of social Darwinism, that these countries deserved to be conquered and casualty didn't matter – it's insensitive. As a POC myself, in my eyes Alexander was very much a hero of his time who had some greatness that all people can aspire to, but his military exploits are morally debatable according to modern standards (I don't hate him, I almost named my cat after him, I only want to view him as dialectically as possible). In sum, positioning the moral of his story for the post-colonial modern audience is tricky. Therefore, this Netflix documentary is the best reimagination of him, at least in my personal opinion.

(Pearl and Kid's partners will just have to be explained later though.... sorry Kin and Otto.) I've added the chart again so you know the names of everyone in case for some reason it got confusing.. anyway!! ~ "Glitch, what did you mean in that last post that you couldn't have Guy and Darwin together?" ... welp I guess now's a good time to introduce the Next Gen's partners!! Starting with Pig. (Pig in a blanket Dog). If you remember in the show Guy said he was "born attached to his two brothers" - yeah. Echo and I have named them "Hot Dog Dude" and "Hot Dog Man". Dude ended up with a teen pregnancy (17, same age as Gum) which resulted in Pig being born. But Dude wasn't the best parent and didn't really want the responsibility.. so Guy stepped up. Ends becoming more of a father to his nephew than Dude ever was. Guy even legally adopts Pig at some point, and Pig sees Dude as more of an 'uncle' instead. (I'm sure that's confusing but idk man, it is what it is.) Anywaysss - Pig ends up with Zipper!! ("Childhood friends to Lovers” trope). Very sappy and in love!! The reason I didn't wanna put Guy with Darwin is because well.. Zip is Darwin's nephew. Wouldn't it be odd if your uncle is dating your boyfriend's dad...? ("Glitch, Guy isn't biologically Pig's dad though?" - I know, but it's.. the principal.. okay???) So I figured it's just easier to keep Guy and Dar as good friends. (I say all this as if there isn't confusing stuff later.. I'LL GET TO IT.) - Moving on; Leonard (Lenny) is obviously; Larry and Karen's son! (I did make a post recently saying that Larry is also married to Small, yep that's still true. Go read that post if you're confused though. Lenny ends up with Cas!! ("Friends to Lovers" trope. Yes all the GR kids have a 'romance trope' with their relationships cause I think it's fun!) -

Continuing down the line - Cosette ends up with Wessley. He is just an Oc with OC parents. Isn't a next gen of anyone in canon so there's not much to explain there. (their 'trope' is the "Coffee Shop Romance" btw!) I don't have much to say about them other than I love them!! (I love all my next gen ships.)

- Nezt up is Elliot who ends up with a boy named Rodney (Rod)! He is the son of "Shooting Star" (which I just say at this point is his name. Another Hot Dog Guy situation lol) As for Rodney's mom? She was an anonymous surrogate. I know who she is (yes it's another bg character, I'm sure you could figure out which one.) Rod plays a pivotal role in Eli's life, and ironically their 'trope' is "Second Chances''. They go through trials and errors but work though it <33 - Aaaaand finally for the twins; Roe ends up with Nimble and Rem ends up with a girl named Lei! Nimble is a fictional lizard/gator thing, a species I made up and still don't have a name for :') Nim was an orphan but eventually adopted by some of Cas' classmates (who, are adults at this point and are Oc's so no canon characters again.) Roe and Nim are the classic "Enimies to Lover's" trope - just like GumRob! Nim was Roe's 'nemesis' (it was more of a one sided thing. Roe hated Nim way more than Nim could ever hate Roe LMAO). Took Roe a while to even ADMIT he had any feelings for Nim. (Of course the whole fam teased him about it.) -

Rem ends up with Lei - the daughter of Chi Chi and LeXing. ("Who's LeXing?" - does Miracle Star sound familiar? If not, Miracle Star was the carbon copy of TAWoG which then inspired the "Copycats" episode that Chi Chi starred in.) Yeah, Chi Chi wasn't happy to hear his daughter was with a Watterson so their 'trope' is "Forbidden Lovers" but that's a much more dramatic title. Chi Chi was not happy in the slightest.. but it wasn't like he didn't allow them to date, ya know? - I hope this gives some insight on these guys ;v; and PLEASE go check out my friend Nere, the one who drew the 6 images of all the GR kids and their partners <33

"No babe, you aren't. Please don't lie" you muttered. "I'm sorry, I had some awful messages and they have really upset me" he whispered as he pulled his phone out of his back pocket. "Oh Dar, I am so sorry that it is happening. Please don't read them and don't show me because I do not want to see them as they will only upset me. Don't let them get to you, they are pathetic and nothing to you" you tried your best to reassure him but you knew you were doing an awful job. "Sorry for being so silly, I didn't mean too" he smiled as you grabbed your hand. "Don't you ever apologise, you aren't silly. You can have feelings Darwin, you are allowed to let these things upset you. Of course it would upset any human seeing such negativity online. It is okay" you put your hand on his knee as you tightly squeezed it. "Thank you, I think I'll turn my phone off for the evening. I don't need them getting me down anymore. You always say the right stuff, that is why I love you" Darwin grinned as he placed a kiss on your cheek.

What Does Quantum Physics Imply About Consciousness?

In recent years much has been written about whether quantum mechanics (QM) does or does not imply that consciousness is fundamental to the cosmos. This is a problem that physicists have hotly debated since the earliest days of QM a century ago. It is extremely controversial; highly educated and famous physicists can't even agree on how to define the problem.

I have a degree in physics and did some graduate level work in QM before switching to computer science; my Ph.D. addressed topics in cognitive science. So I'm going to give it a go to present an accessible and non-mathematical summary of the problem, hewing to as neutral a POV as I can manage. Due to the complexity of this subject I'm going to present it in three parts, with this being Part 1.

What is Quantum Mechanics?

First, a little background on QM. In science there are different types of theories. Some explain how phenomena work without predicting outcomes (e.g., Darwin's Theory of Evolution). Some predict outcomes without explaining how they work (e.g., Newton's Law of Gravity.)

QM is a purely predictive theory. It uses something called the wave function to predict the behavior of elementary particles such as electrons, photons, and so forth. The wave equation expresses the probabilities of various outcomes, such as the likelihood that a photon will be recorded by a detection instrument. Before the physicist takes a measurement the wave function expresses what could happen; once the measurement is taken, it's no longer a question of probabilities because the event has happened (or not). The instrument recorded it. In QM this is called wave function collapse.

The Measurement Problem

When a wave function collapses, what does that mean in real terms? What does it imply about our familiar macroscopic world, and why do people keep saying it holds important implications for consciousness?

In QM this is called the Measurement Problem, first introduced in 1927 by physicist Werner Heisenberg as part of his famous Uncertainty Principle, and further developed by mathematician John Von Neumann in 1932. Heisenberg didn't attempt to explain what wave function collapse means in real terms; since QM is purely predictive, we're still not entirely sure what implications it may hold for the world we are familiar with. But one thing is certain: the predictions that QM makes are astonishingly accurate.

We just don't understand why they are so accurate. QM is undoubtedly telling us "something extremely important" about the structure of reality, we just don't know what that "something" is.

Interpretations of QM

But that hasn't stopped physicists from trying. There have been numerous attempts to interpret what implications QM might hold for the cosmos, or whether the wave function collapses at all. Some of these involve consciousness in some way; others do not.

Wave function collapse is required in these interpretations of QM:

The Copenhagen Interpretation (most commonly taught in physics programs)

Collective Collapse interpretations

The Transactional Interpretation

The Von Neumann-Wigner Interpretation

It is not required in these interpretations:

The Consistent Histories interpretation

The Bohm Interpretation

The Many Worlds Interpretation

Quantum Superdeterminism

The Ensemble Interpretation

The Relational Interpretation

This is not meant to be an exhaustive list, there are a boatload of other interpretations (e.g. Quantum Bayesianism). None of them should be taken as definitive since most of them are not falsifiable except via internal contradiction.

Big names in physics have lined up behind several of these (Steven Hawking was an advocate of the Many Worlds Interpretation, for instance) but that shouldn't be taken as anything more than a matter of personal philosophical preference. Ditto with statements of the form "most physicists agree with interpretation X" which has the same truth status as "most physicists prefer the color blue." These interpretations are philosophical in nature, and the debates will never end. As physicist M. David Mermin once observed: "New interpretations appear every year. None ever disappear."

What About Consciousness?

I began this post by noting that QM has become a major battlefield for discussions of the nature of consciousness (I'll have more to say about this in Part 2.) But linkages between QM and consciousness are certainly not new. In fact they have been raging since the wave function was introduced. Erwin Schrodinger said -

do you guys wanna know about the drama in the bird world right now?

too bad I'm telling you anyway because it's crazy so basically there's this birder who had worked in Nat Geo for YEARS and produced/authored several bird field guides over the years his name is Jon L. Dunn

and his guides are great they're really informative and his last one was the 7th edition

TURNS OUT he was fired by Nat Geo but didn't find out until he saw it ON SOCIAL MEDIA

and so of course he's pissed so he decides to write his own field guide without Nat Geo's limitations except there's drama with naming too

there are over 190 bird names that include a human name in it, like Darwin's Finch for example, and basically ornithologists are coming together to rename them all to take the human names OUT of all bird names from here on out so that means going back and renaming over 190 birds which may sound kinda easy but they all have to go through a process and get approved one by one and this is world wide by the way! it's gonna take a WHILE

meanwhile the 8th edition of Nat Geo's bird field guide is set to be released in 2025 and Jon Dunn is still writing his own guide but these names haven't been released/approved yet ALSO Nat geo has stopped producing the 7th edition in preparation for the 8th which is written by this new guy who is much younger than Jon Dunn so of course all the hard-core birders are PISSED

but now there's this grey area of no new field guides coming out until after the new names are released but they have to time it properly because Jon Dunn is also suing Nat Geo for firing him like that (or something??) so of course there's the competition of both books coming out at the sameish time but also going against national geographic? unheard of

anyways that's the bird drama abridged I think it's so interesting

also go support Jon L. Dunn's field guide once it comes out! he does a really good job with 7th edition and I've heard his new version will be just as if not better than this one

26. List some season 7 MSR headcanons

Season of secret sex began after Millennium (I think their first time could've been earlier but for sure they started doing it regularly here)

Mulder's dream sequence in Amor Fati was influenced by his telepathy; CSM and Diana were there in the beginning because they were close by, but Scully didn't show up in the dream until she was close enough for his mind to pick up on, and CSM and Diana were out of range by then so that's why they were gone by the end

Not sure if this technically counts as a headcanon but Sein Und Zeit and Closure just did not happen, that was such a stupid and underwhelming ending to Samantha's story (brilliant acting by DD though especially in the last scene where he gets to say goodbye to her, frankly carried the whole thing on his shoulders)

Oh yeah and Mulder and Scully definitely fucked when she stayed over after telling him the results of his mother's autopsy

After En Ami Mulder and Scully backed off their sexual relationship for a while, the tension between them laying the groundwork for Scully's soul-searching in All Things when she ultimately decided Mulder is who she's meant to be with

First time was after Milagro, the tonal shift between Milagro and The Unnatural is insane and clearly indicates a significant change in their relationship

I know this contradicts the first one but I also have a headcanon that their first time was after the IVF failed, and sometimes I like to place that right before Milagro, so they have comfort sex but don't have a chance to talk about it before the Padgett case starts and the rest of the episode happens in that context

This body (or this world?) did not accept you, but you yourself weren't sure what exactly was wrong. After all, even appearance hadn't changed so significantly that you could claim it was a 'completely alien body'; more like some alternate version of you — but the skin felt wrong, not as it should, too sensitive and responsive to everything, doesn't matter if it was the wind that was blowing somehow wrong, or a hidden blade that you could dodge by acting even on pure instincts. Undoubtedly, this contributed to the improvement of your skills and reactions, as if the slightest movement around always found a physical response in you, making you feel like some kind of herbal or wind spirit.

... But every look, every touch — your whole being was so tense, like a stretched fabric about to tear, from which any attempt to touch was perceived as a cut or a blow. You knew for sure that it wasn't the skin itself, physically it received and reacted to wounds like any other, without being too gentle, but you were always where this line between mental and physical reaction passed. Perhaps it was even something psychological — you can't say for sure, not that you remember anything at all from your life that is connected with the past, even if you are clearly aware when this or that reaction is caused by muscle memory. Your body remembers what your mind is not able to reproduce — but without mind, you would not be able to take care of this uncomfortable body, like a worn-out cell that tries to keep your 'soul' inside, although it costs too much.

Was this a kind of punishment for the fact that you occupied a body in which you were not actually born? You didn't know — not when you were too focused on fighting for survival in this world, more like a burnt-out wasteland after some devastating war. Disgusting in its grotesqueness social darwinism — 'who managed, they ate', even if this is the body of someone who was a little less lucky to be where it was not worth being, and these are not only monsters, but also lands that absorb blood with meat, trying to satiate themselves in aimless greed, — as deep as the pupils of a person who holds out his hand to you in a dark glove, smiling senselessly, as if you have not survived this nightmare for a couple of years, forced to adapt from the life of a modern person to one of the links in the food chain, where you are far from the top.

Even if it was the hand of the blackest and most vile creature, you would accept it.

And even after a while, you can't say that you regret your choice. You have everything you need to not worry about that body: comfortable clothes, the necessary treatment, and your mana is more than normally restored — even if sometimes you are drawn to things like food or the Internet, especially when you see the dull dying earth from the balcony, you try to remind yourself that everything is fine. Everything is fine now. You still have to work and work hard, but at least you don't have to think about where you should spend the night, where to hide and where to expect enemies, constantly turning in your head the memories of a past life in an attempt to use the current one to survive.

... In the end, it is these features that NERGAL keeps you close — at least, you hope that only for these.

Maybe in a previous life you would have accepted him as 'your type', but in the current one? Getting involved with any of... these ones has consequences much more serious than just a 'broken heart', and you can't say whether you will have a next life — and whether your next body will not be even worse.

(NERGAL had never been in the habit of asking when he wanted something, however.)

NERGAL knows 'what's wrong with you' and this is used more as an excuse to pull you even closer, as if the fact that the place next to him is the most profitable among many others is not enough — after all, the safest place when the typhoon is inside, and you tell yourself the same thing, even when the how carefully he treat you becomes disturbing and slightly unnerving. NERGAL does not hide the fact that he cares about you or that he is responsible for things that are more convenient for you — even if does not always say it out loud, you know for sure that because of him the servants treat you differently, with more caution, like fragile porcelain.

The King of Dark Fall is not at all the type who pays attention to the physical characteristics of others at all and does not know how to recognize them, — he does not need it, after all, — so you do not even try to flatter yourself with thoughts that 'this is how he highlights his special subordination', not when NERGAL politely asks if you like this 'more light clothing' or 'soft fabric'. And it is precisely how different your positions are that makes you overlook everything — do you want to go back? Do you want to fight every minute for your life again and sleep with one eye open? Didn't you have enough?

There is no need to shout "wolves" while they are just looming at the edge of the forest — otherwise, when they cling to your neck, no one will come running to the screams.

(of course, you are not deluded that anyone will be affected by your requests for help — social darwinism is soaked into the blood, which dictates that 'own skin is more important' than someone else's problems, and you can only go along with the current, trying to draw boundaries between yourself and him, even if he is the type who is used to pushing these very boundaries.)

NERGAL is not trying to overstep the boundaries — this is not in his spirit; even if he tends to force you to do things that you initially don't want, over time you get used to it — largely due to the fact that his leadership is closer to "look at me and do as I do" than to trying to explain something, and this soon begins to involuntarily relax you, since NERGAL is not too emotional, restrained and respectful, especially in relation to your personal space and desire / unwillingness to physically approach, not allowing you to fly away or think that you are ready to give up your current comfort to avoid creepy behavior, because NERGAL is not creepy.

Yes, even when he is responsible for the full degree of comfort with which you live, knows your preferences perfectly well, takes a more dominant position and you feel that you are becoming too dependent on better conditions that are directly controlled by him — he is not the type that clearly feels more creepy, especially compared to everything that you saw before you were accepted into the service of the King of Dark Fall.

His control appears gradually and prudently, but even so, you hardly notice — the society of this world is so far from yours that you have no idea when something is 'strange' or 'normal', and this only worsens everything around when NERGAL, encouraging your ambitions if there are any, at the same time, clearly restricts you as soon as signs appear that you can sail away from his control or custody. By the time you realize that everything looks too strange, — even if no one dares to point it out, — any attempts to swim out will first lead to a decrease in comfort, then— to a more than direct threat that you will experience serious consequences if you think that the smartest in the room.

NERGAL is not the one who hides his attitude — he has a goal and he goes to it; perhaps, while he is still Leon's assistant, you can somehow hide from him by running off to some tasks in the battlefields against monsters or locking yourself in a room, since he does not have such the authority to force you directly, but when does he become the head? Escape attempt is excluded — no matter where; if his credit of trust in you is exhausted, you will eventually be locked up, and you will have nowhere to go, because it is even less likely that you are stronger than NERGAL, and given that he now has power, no one can give you even an illusory protection from him. He is straightforward in this, even if at first moves gently and gradually, as if reveling in the fact that you have nowhere to run and no one to go to.

You won't be surprised if it turns out that he's just enjoying how defenseless you are now, even if you're not as weak as Leon is now; and perhaps, perhaps, he is too happy to devote more time to you than is worth in current position, changing schedule just to be with you.

He is sticky — even if at first NERGAL clearly refrains from touching or hugging, experimenting and trying different ways to get closer and touch you. Not only literally, but also metaphorically: he always knows where you are and what you are doing, especially if he has suspicions that you may be trying to get out of the castle or room — and often he regrets that he cannot deprive you of your strength, just as Leon lost his strength, in order to reduce his own anxiety about your movement and make you more dependent on him.

However, your "touchiness" is more fun entertainment for him than something that causes irritation — NERGAL is interested in your emotional and physical reactions, and seeing how you react to various stimulations and interactions is closer to the kind of foreplay that he can afford if he sees that you are not comfortable enough for more actions. He pushes the boundaries, but does not try to bend them — even with a more... ambiguous morality in society, he is not so desperate or needy to scare you away, at least outwardly.

He is more than busy, and although it may sometimes seem to you that you are in the palm of his hand, along with your actions and thoughts, NERGAL always lets you unobtrusively realize this — his right to claim everything he considers himself worthy, including the persons he considers his own, is not a 'painful place', that you could somehow manipulate or influence, and attempts to break out of this not-too-honey web will not be successful, no matter what you do.

NERGAL is more than transparent about what he expects from you — there are no emotional manipulations or attempts to muddle your brains, at least not for a long time; in the end, sooner or later, you will move on to a conversation in the style of "why should I stay here with you" and willingness to discuss this. Undoubtedly, you will be given the choice to 'leave' — only if he is sure that you will invariably return. The body that you have made your weapon for survival is more than sensitive to any change in comfort, and even whether this comfort is emotional and physical does not really matter — after all, NERGAL is emotionally stable and calm, despite his strange behavior, like most servants, but how will you are live normally in an environment where you will lose everything that have achieved for years?

He does not persuade when it comes to the decision to stay in the castle with him. It's not like him. You are either "yes" or "no" — and if you are "no", but one day you will invariably become "yes". Nergal has long arms — while you don't have a wide range of choices.

No one will want to mess with him. Even you.

"Oh, my god! Penelope finally made her own channel!" Penelope films her first YouTube video. "Yes, I have decided to make my own channel. I saw a few asking why not make one for fun so here you go." She laughs.

"Not gonna lie this is really weird for me to do. Normally when I talk into a camera, I'm at least with two more people and not doing it alone. So pretty much what my channel is going to be is just for fun. Some vlogs to show how my days are at home, work, or whatever. Fun Q&A's if y'all want. You guys can comment or tweet me some things you want to see on here."

"Hopefully having this channel is a good way for you guys to know me more than what you just see when I'm in a few Sam and Colby videos or TFIL videos. And hopefully, you guys enjoy this if not that's completely fine by me. It's not going to hurt my feelings in any way unless you're extremely mean for absolutely no reason. I'm looking forward to this ride for me and you guys."

"Now let's go give the news to my roommates because they have no idea I'm even doing this." She stops filming and then starts again going to Aaron's room first.

"Am I bugging you?" She pops her head into his room.

"I'm starting my own YouTube channel and this is my first Vlog."

"I'm so proud of you. Look at you growing up." He cheers for her making her laugh.

"Let's go tell Colby now." They go across the hall. "Colbs!" She screams swinging his door open scaring him.

"Was that necessary?!" He throws a pillow at her.

"Yes, this is my first vlog on my channel." She smiles and he jumps up on his bed cheering.

"She's joined the dark side!"

She leaves his room finding Corey and Elton together, "Say hi for my first vlog going up on my channel!" She screams at them with Sam and Colby following her.

"What? Look at you!" Elton applauds her.

"Penelope! Penelope!" Corey chants.

"That means you can be part of the prank wars now, right? We get you and you can get back at us?" Elton brings it up as well.

"Shut up! Never mind, I'm not starting a channel." She shakes her head.

"Nope, now we can 100 percent involve you now." Colby cheers.

"Okay, well I'm ending this here now. Thank you, guys, for watching my first-ever video. You'll probably see stupid prank wars videos as soon as these idiots prank me. I'm not looking forward to that." She huffs.

"Like, comment, and subscribe!" Sam screams.

"Yeah!" They all yell.

"Again, thank you guys. I'll see you next time." She says ends the video.

"Look at her Colby. She's already a pro." Sam fake cries.

"Whatever, Sammy. Thank you guys for being happy for me." She tells them and they say of course.

She goes to her room and edits her video for a bit before she has to go do a little shoot for work. Leaving the house though, her car doesn't start so she goes back in asking for a ride and Colby is as the only free one.

"They won't mind if I'm just there right? Since I'm your ride and can just wait for you." Colby asks following the directions.

"I don't think they will mind. There's plenty of room behind to sit and watch. I've seen others that do nothing just sit around waiting for someone." She tells him.

As Penelope said they didn't really care Colby was there since he was her ride. Just as long as he say quietly they wouldn't have a problem with him.

While Penelope sat in her chair getting her hair and makeup done, Colby noticed Darwin walk in so he walked over to him.

"Ugh, if you're here she's here." Darwin sighs.

"You got my message right?" Colby crosses his arms.

"Yes, I got your stupid message. And I don't care if you guys are dating because I'm seeing someone else now. Who is way better than Penny." Colby's hands ball up into a fist and Darwin sees this, "Do it. Embarrass your girlfriend at her job."

"I'm not going to satisfy you." Colby walks off going back to Penelope, "Darwin just got here." He tells her.

"Just ignore him. For me, please." She takes his hand into hers.

"I will for you." He gives her a smile.

"Thank you." She lets go of his hand, "Now, I gotta go do my solo then we do group and we're good to go." She gets out of her chair.

As she works Colby just watched and was memorized by her and how she was a natural for the camera, "I'm entirely fucked." Colby says to himself then forces himself to look away to see another girl looking at him in a flirty way. His eyes widened a bit before looking back at Penelope.

"Darwin, who is that?" The girl walks over to him.

Darwin looks over at who Megan was talking about, "Colby, Penelope's boyfriend but when I dated her, he was just her best friend." He rolls his eyes.

"He's dating her?" She can't help but laugh, "He's too good-looking for her."

Darwin looks at her, "And I wasn't?"

"You were but you're not my type. He is." She looks back over at Colby, "You think he's the type to leave her or cheat?"

"You aren't going to get what you want Megan so give up now." Darwin goes through his phone but she walks over to Colby anyway.

"Hi, I'm Megan." She puts her hand out to Colby, who is startled by her coming over.

"Hey, I'm Colby, Penelope's boyfriend." He shakes her hand quickly.

"How did she get so lucky meeting you?" She says in a flirty tone.

"Childhood friends. Our moms are best friends." He looks at the time on his phone feeling awkward at the moment.

"So you guys are like really close?"

"Yeah, dippers to now. So our relationship is great." He smiles looking over to see Penelope still busy.

"I know you guys are like best friends as well but she can still keep secrets from you. Like did you know, she cheated on Darwin, with the guy over there, Jake. If you watch them near each other you can see they have a secret thing. I'm just trying to warn you."

Colby can't help but laugh at her, "Thanks but I'm good. We're good because you're making up lies at the moment. One; she tells me everything because we're best friends first. Two; Jake is gay because I follow him on Instagram so I know he has a boyfriend."

Megan stood there taken back because she was used to the guy believing her and getting with her next. She just huffs walking away as Penelope comes back, "You met Megan..."

"Yeah, made up lie about you. You apparently have a secret thing with Jake." He laughs.

"Wow. Yeah, she has a repetition for going after other girls' boyfriends and normally she gets what she wants." Penelope lets him know.

"Well, she's not getting what she wants this time." Colby kisses her cheek.

"Also, I'm not needed for the group shoot so we can go home now." She lets him know as well.

"Great because Megan eyeing me makes me super uncomfortable. First thing first, I have to find the bathroom before we head out."

Penelope gives him the directions while she grabs her stuff so Megan walks over to her, "Colby is sweet. Darwin said something while you were with him."

"Again, I never cheated on him with Colby. We got together after and months after so it wasn't right away." Penelope huffs trying to plead her case.

"I honestly don't see what he sees in you. You're way out of his league." Megan eyes her up and down before leaving her.

"I heard we're apparently a secret thing." Jake joins Penelope's side, "Freddie thinks that's funny."

"Yeah, she's trying to get what she wants."

"Are you even a little nervous she could? You two aren't really so..." He whispers the last part because he has known about the act since she told him.

"I know Colby's type and she doesn't fit it, trust me. Plus he hates mean girls. Especially if they're mean to me. Junior year he stood up his date to homecoming because she said shit about me." Penelope giggles thinking back, "It was funny the next day at school."

"Well, I wish you guys luck with her." Jake goes to his shoot as his name is called.

Walking towards the bathroom area, Penelope sees Megan with her back against the wall kissing Colby with her arms around his neck and his hands on the wall, "Huh." Penelope speaks up so Megan lets go smirking while Colby was speechless.

He was just coming out of the bathroom when Megan popped up out of nowhere and pulled him into a kiss. Her hold on him was tight he's been trying to get her off him for like the past minute. He thought he could use the wall as support to push out of her hold but it still didn't work.

"I get what I want." Megan shoulder checks Penelope going back to the main area.

Penelope shakes her head walking out with Colby following, "I swear I have been fighting to get out of her grip, Penny. I came out and she came out of nowhere grabbing me." Colby speaks up finally as they reach his car.

"It's okay, Colby." Penelope forces a laugh, "We aren't actually dating so you don't have to worry." She gets in the car.

"No, I do because you know me. I would never kiss or get with anyone who treats you like shit. Megan is a piece of trash and kissed me forcefully." Colby doesn't start the car.

"Colby, it's fine. I know and I believe you." She gives him a smile but deep down it hurts her for some odd reason. Like he said, he was trying to get her off him but still.

The ride back to the house was silent and the only the radio was the sound. Entering the house they go in different directions and Colby goes to rant to Sam.

"Oh, what now!?" Sam asks as Colby enters his room.

"So this chick, Megan, who is a bitch by the way. Forced herself into me because I'm dating Penelope. Penelope caught her kissing me in this situation because I couldn't get out of this girl's grip. I told Penelope what happened and she told me not to worry about it. Tell me why I feel like I should worry about it?" Colby takes a seat on the bed.

"You know exactly why, Colby. I don't have to remind you."

"But still!" He leans back hitting his head on the wall.

"I think your act is really getting to you since you actually want it to be true. You felt as if you were actually kissing another girl that's not Penelope, your girlfriend. Colby, you need to tell her or get over it because you're gonna drive yourself insane." Sam tries to help his best friend.

"Why did I have to feel this way about her? You were never this bad when you liked her. Yeah, I heard you saying you were close to asking her out before Tyson."

"Oh, I was, I just knew how to control my crush on her. Thankfully you introduced me to Kat and it went away." Sam laughs.

"What?! You liked her that long? Sam!" Colby jumps up.

"I did, yes."

"How can you have liked her when I did?" Colby says making Sam point at him.

"Ha! So you did know you liked her way before the kiss!" Sam jumps up now causing Colby to glare at him.

"Oh, shut up. You already said I've always had a thing for her deep down. I just never wanted to admit it. And you're not helping me right now."

"This is for you to figure out, dude." Sam pats his back.
