11, 12, 18, 21 for the turtle asks! :)
my answer to the voice acting one got really long, so. oops adding a readmore
11. Favorite turtle (iteration specific)?
maaan this is a tough question. i think i’ve said before that my Top Favorite Turtle of All Time switches between all the 03 kids, but it’s usually Mikey or Raph. right now I think Raph is my favorite. His 03 characterization is so compelling, he just tugs at my heartstrings in a lot of different ways. I love that he starts at his lowest point early in the show and then we get to see him gradually learn to navigate his feelings and connect with the people around him. He's doing his best to figure out his place in the world, he feels like a very real depiction of what it's like being a neurodivergent teen (okay I know I'm projecting now but also I'm right). The sibling angst can hit a little close to home sometimes but I also look at him and think "oh that kid is gonna be okay. he's just figuring it out." Yknow??
Other incarnations that are very dear to me: ‘87 Raphael, bmvtmnt Mikey, 90s movies/07 Leo, and Rise Raph
ask game
12. Favorite turtle across all iterations?
It’s Mikey is anyone surprised. Like. That’s my funny little guy!!
I think he brings something new to the table with every incarnation. Like, the rest of the boys feel like they mostly have the same core traits across iterations, but I get the sense that most Mikeys are different from each other on a more fundamental level. They all have different ways of thinking and flaws and I find them all to be very compelling and entertaining to watch :]
Raph is a close second though! Again, who is surprised qwq
18. Did any of their voice actors really stand out to you?
Ahh omg I'm actually so glad you asked this one anon. I pay a lot of attention to the voice acting so just going in loose chronological order:
Obviously Rob Paulsen is a fucking gem who brought Raphael to life and p much singlehandedly made '12 Donnie likeable (sorry the writers did all that to you buddy). But man I don't see enough love for Barry Gordon as Donatello! He brings such a particular vibe to the character that's so endlessly endearing I just think it's funny that he's kinda the meanest one but he sounds like the littlest fucking guy ever
Michael Sinterniklaas as Leo is so fucking charming I just. Holds him gently. I like how confused he sounds all the time. I like his little laugh he does in the scene where they're playing with the hose. I like his "it's okay!" line in The Ultimate Ninja. I like that he's going for grinditude. I like him so bad ToT And Sam Riegel as Donny is wild because I think he sometimes has the weirdest line reads--not in a bad way, just like, why did you say it like that. I'm forever obsessed with him.
Rewatching 2007 movie was so wild I could barely focus with how many voices I recognized in there. Sarah Michelle Gellar as April was really fun. With Mako as Splinter okay I may as well just cry myself to sleep
Greg Cipes and Ashley Johnson characters are literally their own ship dynamic like whatever that is I don't care they invented it
The entire Rise cast is sooo good I adore every one of them the comedy just legitimately would not work without them. Not a bad line read in that whole show tbh. I'm particularly fond of Josh Brener as Donnie for that autistic-ass delivery. Also cannot stress enough how great Ayo Edebiri and Zelda Williams are too like the entire cast just has such a good vibe
21. Give one character a hug?
I MEAN. It's hard to choose they all deserve a hug!! But I am not much of a hugger and neither are a lot of the characters who need the most hugs. So I think... Rise Mikey or Alopex maybe? I think that they would give very good hugs.

How the Critical Role cast ships other characters in their game (from my observations):
Laura Bailey - When her character isn’t in the scene, hands in front of her face, giggling, debriefing with Travis and others around her about it. Naturally brings up relationship stuff with others at the table while in character.
Taliesin Jaffe - Will quietly indicate on Talks Machina what ships he digs. Rarely ships actively in character but occasionally can be seen smiling/celebrating as Taliesin when the story progresses. Another fan of exchanging looks to share the moment with others. He did lecture Travis via Caduceus to Yasha about the perils of a slowburn romance in a D&D game that one time, though, which was amazing.
Ashley Johnson - Very expressive facial expressions in the “surprised” to “awwww” range. A shipper of pure joy, what we all aspire to be.
Matthew Mercer - Honestly probably knows the most about what both characters are feeling other than the players themselves, so I always look to see his reactions to significant scenes although he attempts to keep his poker face. Sometimes changes music or the background soundscape to be more romantic. Narrates beautiful scenes and embellishes a little for couples. Inserts symbols in the game so the universe ships the characters too.
Liam O’Brien - Liam cannot stand having his character not know about a romantic relationship because he just HAS to react to it, so makes sure that his character “suspects” or finds out as soon as possible. Makes sure to bring up the relationship in one-and-one conversations. Promotes the relevant fan art.
Marisha Ray - Lots of smiling, and she always hides behind her notebook for very romantic and significant scenes. Looks around to share the moment with others.
Sam Riegel - Makes side commentary as Sam, not his character, commenting on how hot scenes are and indicating his opinion that love is in the air. Provides “helpful” suggestions about what characters could do (i.e. kiss). Appears to be attempting to keep a blank face when his character is out of scenes but forgets sometimes and gets excited when something is happening with his ships. Meddles in character to progress the story whether that be causing plot obstacles or matchmaking. There was also that one time in which he tried to get Marisha to say on Talks Machina three episodes into the second campaign that Beauyasha would be canon end game.
Travis Willingham - Gets TV face and noms down on any pop cans if there are any within reach for exciting moments. Exchanges Significant Looks (TM) with others at the table and sometimes comments quietly. Commits to gentle flirting on the behalf of others when they are not at the table. (Also, bonus shipping, as a DM, deliberately set up scenarios for Percy & Vex to have sexy times in his non-canon one-shot).

Hi, just saw your make a cr fan cry with one sentence post (thanks for that, didn't hurt me emotionally at all) and didn't recognise all of them. Hope you don't mind me asking after them? It's "I've always wanted a big brother", "I forgive you but I cannot let you leave" and "sometimes the things that are the most beautiful are the things that hurt us the most". Thanks!
Hi! I'm very happy that we're all stable and healthy people who would never cry over a d&d game. Caleb, Keyleth, Vax and Sam Riegel who?
I don't mind at all!
The big brother thing is best left out of context because the context is a ginormous spoiler. But if you're okay with that, read on:
(SPOILER FOR CAMPAIGN 2!!!) In the very last episode, Kingsley tells the Nein that he is not a certain other person, but that this person is kind of close to him after all, and he concludes that by saying "An older brother maybe. I've always wanted a big brother" or something along those lines.
"I forgive you but I cannot let you leave" are Percy's, I think, last words before dying. He says them to Ripley.
"Sometimes the things that are most beautiful..." is a quote by Jester, when they're on a ship for, I think, the first time, and she sees the jellyfish in the water. She says this to Fjord and starts crying, and Fjord is left standing there, not knowing how to comfort her. I don't know WHAT she said it in relation to; there's been much speculation about that. Maybe she meant the Gentleman lying to her and her mother, her mother's beautiful story about her dad turning out to have been untrue, or maybe it's about Molly loving her enough to die in the process of trying to save her. I don't know. Regardless, it was very emotional.

The Munchkin Nein - Nott the Nightingale
Explaining this series
A bit of shoutout to Emmy-award winning Sam Riegel and his acapella background (which Nott most assuredly cannot emulate cos -3 to CHA and performance)
Rulebook mechanics wise, there isn’t all that much complexity to a level 5 rogue at the moment. So a great deal of hilarity can be found from the unwritten options available to every DnD player. Nonetheless, lets work through them for simple reference and completeness.
Rogues tend to be rather physical characters, so most of their output comes from their weaponry and class abilities. That being said, Nott is an Arcane Trickster, so that opens up a fair few magical options and increasingly more to come.
So let’s start with the bread and butter for Nott, her trusty hand crossbow. It does 1d6 piercing DMG + Nott’s modifer of +4 DEX. With the feat “Crossbow Expert”, it greatly improves the action economy of the diminutive goblin. She effectively does not need to load her crossbow, is able to fire it at a target within 5 feet without suffering disadvantage and finally; she can take a second shot using a bonus action on top of her usual attack with either the crossbow or short sword.
With regard to the short sword, we have yet to see too much of it in use since killing the manticore baby I believe, due to it performing similarly (1d6 + 4 slashing DMG) except only in melee, while the hand crossbow has the ranges of 30/120 with ranges falling between the numbers imposing disadvantage on the attack roll and beyond that impossible.
Disadvantage is a crucial thing to take note of in utilizing a rogue’s arsenal. Sneak attack has two possible conditions
Having advantage on the attack roll
Target has a hostile within 5 feet, said hostile isn’t incapacitated AND Nott doesn’t have disadvantage on the attack roll.
As we can see, having disadvantage on the attack roll automatically precludes sneak attack from occurring. How important is sneak attack anyway? At level 5, something to the tune of 3d6 DMG, once per turn. On average, that’s worth more than an additional crossbow shot and then some. More so when it’s a critical hit, since dice rolls of damage are doubled, but not modifiers. Thus if Nott wishes to maximize her damage in combat, she’d be looking for every opportunity to fulfill the conditions of sneak attack at least for one attack roll every turn.
These conditions can be imposed as a result of a variety of maneuvers. A characteristically roguish way is simply to hide, then literally sneak an attack. Mechanically, hiding takes an action, requires a DEX (stealth) check which Nott has a solid +8 to versus whatever DM Matt decides is appropriate to roll. Fortunately, being a goblin (well rogue also gives that ability), hide can also be taken as a bonus action, giving Nott a greater range of options whilst attempting to hide.
Speaking of goblin racial traits, a nifty DMG boost is Fury of the Small, a once per short/long rest ability that gives +5 DMG at level 5. The condition is that the target has to be larger than Nott (so medium or larger), which is pretty easily met. Usually.
Anyway, back to sneak attack. Aside from giving advantage on attacks (which, frankly everyone wants when trying to kill something, rogues are just more rewarded for getting it) the Mighty Nein can assist Nott quite readily by just getting up close and personal. Nott herself also has to get relatively close at 30 feet, to avoid disadvantage on her ranged attacks.
Aiding her in this is the rogue’s ability to use a bonus action to dash and disengage if things get too hairy. Though, once again, with “crossbow expert” she can hold her ground if she so wishes. And hold it she can, since Uncanny Dodge halves the incoming damage of a single attack. Though probably not for too long since it’s once per turn (costs a reaction).
Now let’s talk spells, which shouldn’t take too long so I won’t split this post like Caleb’s. Take a breather first maybe.
Cantrips. The usual fall back plan of spellcasters if they’ve got nothing else. But in Nott’s case, they are more for adapting to non-combat situations, with the extremely useful Mage Hand enhanced by being a rogue, and “You can reply to this message” that is so endearing.
The one combat cantrip Shocking Grasp, does 2d8 lightning DMG, is a melee spell attack that has advantage if the enemy is wearing metal armor. Hopefully you still remember that rogue bit about sneak attack and advantages. Also, if Matt is kind, he may rule that alternative situations warrant the advantage on this kind of surprise zapping. (Nvm, sneak attack requires finesse or ranged weapons) If Nott were ever to be inclined to get into melee, a creature hit by this cantrip is also unable to take reactions, so no opportunity attacks if she chooses to move away without disengaging.
At the moment, Nott has 4 level 1 spells, with 3 slots available each long rest to cast with. Disguise Self has mostly non-combat applications, though it would certainly be fun to see if Sam can come up with a creative way to wrangle something out of that. Silent Illusion is in the same vein, though it acting on something other than Nott gives a much wider applicability for any potential combat situation. Feather fall is a simple reactionary spell to save people from falls 600 feet or less.
Tasha’s Hideous Laughter is where things get interesting. It has a range of 30 feet, the effective range of Nott’s hand crossbow, takes up an action and the ability of everyone to endure a terrible joke from Sam Riegel (I am sincerely impressed how awful each and every one of them has been). The target mercifully only has to succeed on a WIS save, while possessing an INT score of 5 and above. Upon failing the save (which honestly, what wouldn’t and the success rate has been pretty good so far), the target falls prone, becomes incapacitated and cannot stand up while affected. Prone and incapacitation are pretty strong conditions to impose. The latter prevents actions, bonus actions and reactions from being taken. The former prevents the target from moving normally, only crawling (each foot of movement costs an additional foot, effectively halving movement). The target also makes attacks at disadvantage, which in this context is moot since it cannot attack. Finally, attacks against the target from 5 feet away are at ADV. Any further, however, and they suffer DISAD which Nott learnt in ep21.
These conditions can be negated by the creature making a successful WIS save (against Nott’s DC 14). It has the opportunity at the end of each of its turns, as well as whenever it takes damage. If it is from taking damage, the WIS save is rolled at advantage. Therefore, against a single opponent, it could be beneficial for the whole party to take a few quick moments to optimize their choices or positioning while they are given this breathing room. Against multiple opponents, it would be an opportunity to temporarily have one less threat to deal with. As long as they don’t hit it over and over with multiple attacks. By default, the target has to spend half its movement to stand up, so still limiting the target’s movement as a final touch.
And so there we are, Nott the Brave! Once again, a solid range of options that have great scalability with effective RP like hiding, bad jokes (really, those things deserve to inflict psychic damage) and insanely rushing into melee despite being a squit of a goblin. Not much to say, except I think Nott is pretty fun to watch in combat and in general.
Also, we are on the internet cos it’s tuesday!

Talks Machina Highlights: Critical Role - Thursday By Night
Guests are Travis Willingham, Sam Riegel, and Taliesin Jaffe. Full video on Project Alpha!
No Talks Machina next week due to Halloween! There will be another event in its place to be announced soon.
Laura did a tour of the studio for context for the episode!
@critrolestats counted 8 “stanimas” by Taliesin (and 8 more by everyone else teasing him over it).
Taliesin first encountered V:TM in a LARP in high school---a couple different games ran on and off for years, but before last week he hadn’t played in 20 years or so.
Sam points out that he’s never played with Matt in a game where Matt was playing a character rather than just himself. Travis mentions how Matt is still very game-oriented as a player and tends to instinctively wrangle the rest of the players back toward the objective.
Taliesin talks about how basing the game in the studio was in part inspired by a Vampire game he participated in where the DM just set them loose to murder their way through Disneyland.
Sam knows basically nothing about the set and was fairly confused for much of the descriptions.
Travis’s attitude re: not having killed anyone yet: “Life needs things to live, and I’ve gotta protect it.”
Matt and Marisha called in advance to warn Taliesin that they had a meeting that night with the wedding planner and obviously wouldn’t be able to play for the second part, but still wanted to play if possible, so Taliesin just told them to make increasingly bad decisions and everything would work itself out. Matt immediately realized when he had no reflection that he was a Lasombra vampire and that it would just take sunlight to kill himself off.
Puzzling out what the TT in TTRPG stands for. Brian: “Totally Taliesin?” Travis: “Team Tactics?” Sam: “Three-Titted?” Dani to the rescue: “Tabletop.”
Taliesin was delighted by the reactions from the people who had cameos as NPCs.
Travis: “I don’t know about you, but I got Twitter thank-yous and chocolates sent to my house by Amy for not killing her.” Sam: “Is that true?” Travis: “No.”
Sam finds it harder to play himself than a character. Taliesin: “It’s definitely worse when you’re doing it wrong. I was really irritated by how poorly you were playing yourself.”
Travis becomes more way risk-averse playing a version of himself than he is when he plays a character. Taliesin: “I feel like that’s what you would do, that seems pretty reasonable.” Travis: “Taliesin, I would put myself in front of traffic for you.” Brian: “Yeah, on the 405 about 9:30AM.”
Character stats were based on personality of the player and a bit of last-minute desperation on Taliesin’s part (he enlisted his brother to help). Sam has max Wit, but has less Intelligence than Travis and is mildly irritated at that. Taliesin wasn’t too worried about balance because (a) it’s a short game, and (b) he was already axing a lot of the complexity of the game and at that point balance was out the window anyway.
Sam tells all re: his complicated web of alliances: “I think it’s no secret that one of my alliances... is true... and the others... are not.” Travis: “Is there a chance in hell that it’s not the one with Liam?” Sam: “No. No, it is the one with Liam.” Brian: “Well, still leaving it open to interpretation, I see.” Sam: “No spoilers, guys. It’s Liam.”
There really is a framed map of the studio on the wall next to the women’s bathroom that they could’ve found. Taliesin’s the only one who knew about it. “I’m gonna be the only one who survives an 8.4 earthquake, aren’t I?” “Probably.” “God, it’s gonna be great. Can’t wait.”
Ivan was a throwback to the Mage: the Ascension Technomancers.
Brian thought the Father was Darin de Paul, Sam and Travis thought it was going to be Taliesin.
Re: the server room: “Yeah, it was a bit of a human centipede.” It was integrating into the server, building a weird little sentient AI. Travis: “Would it have messed us up if we went in there?” Taliesin: “Yeah. It would’ve been great.” The boiler-room would also have led to weirdness.
Travis wants to be friends with the werewolves. “I wanna have awesome tats like Rachel had and I want them to show up in my fur and I want to walk around bipedal-style, howl at the moon, cause terror, and generally thrash people apart. That’s all I want.”
What was the worst card? Sam: “The void.” Seriously, though, there was a card that would’ve reset reality.
Travis: “If I had picked up the crucifix without the t-shirt, would it have burned my hand?” Taliesin: “Probably.” Travis: “I am the greatest player alive.”
Someone points out that Sam and Travis always wind up trying to kill each other in these games. “It’s always beneath the surface.”
Sam thinks there’s a apocalyptic hellscape outside, Travis thinks it’s just normal LA out there.
Taliesin was looking for opportunities for the players to “fall into” their clans based on their gameplay.
Talks Stanima In The Dark
Sam is hosting, cannot find the camera.
What’s up with Liam’s papier-maché skin? He’s Nosferatu clan.
Worst Halloween costumes? Travis: in 5th grade, an upside-down clown (it didn’t work out). Taliesin: Tyler Durden. Brian: last year, showed up with no socks, no shoes, no shirt, just slacks. When asked what he was: “I just came in my pants”. He won sexiest costume at the party.
Dani technically died in the explosion. She appears on camera and somehow the show turns into her performance review. Biggest criticism: her feet don’t touch the ground when she’s sitting on the couch.
They also drag Max on screen. Sam has him act out being dead to help the audience better visualize the sequence of events last week.
Brian realizes belatedly that none of their guests are mic’ed up.
Who wrote “something is wrong”? Travis thinks it was Taliesin, because he came up out of the floor first. Sam thinks it’s Ashley.
Steph is brought on set. Sam has actually never met her. Introductions all around. He immediately forgets her name.
The ending is a minor disaster all around. “And don’t forget... is it the day before Thursday yet?” “Oh my god.” “What was your name again?”
