Vivian Marten-Gwilliam’s Pipe Pistol
An intriguing take on the concealable ‘pipe pistol’ concept developed by inventor Vivian Charles Eric Marten-Gwilliam. His patents included on for a breech mechanism, another for a torpedo launching mechanism, a torpedo tube door and another for a clip to hold paper to boards.
This pistol, however, was designed as a weapon for members of the Local Defence Volunteers (LDV), the initial name for the Home Guard. According to the Imperial War Museum Marten-Gwilliam’s Pipe Pistol was designed to “be produced in quantity as a 'means of dealing with isolated enemy paratroopers in country districts whereby certain plain-clothes members of the LDV would be trained in its use'.”
The weapon appears to be of all metal construction with the pipe’s acting as the barrel. The Imperial War Museum describes it as being chambered in “.22 calibre cartridges”, it is not stated if the pistol can hold more than one round. There is a small trigger at the base of the stem, with the pipe bowl intended to be used as a small pistol grip. Apparently the pistol could be smoked, like a real pipe, even when loaded. The pistol was apparently not adopted, the need for a concealed weapon to take on enemy paratroops was somewhat outlandish and impractical. I would love to examine the pistol to see how it works.

Remembering actor and playwright, Frank Williams, who passed away June 26th, 2022, aged 90.
Although best remembered as Vicar Timothy Farthing in Dad's Army, his career was varied, and included roles on stage, in mainstream and indie films, and on television.
His breakthrough role on television was as Captain Pocket in the first ever ITV sitcom, The Army Game, several of his own plays were staged professionally over the years, and two productions, Murder By Appointment and Alibi For Murder, toured nationally in the UK.
Having struggled with typecasting following The Army Game, he was keen not to face the same frustrations after the end of Dad’s Army. He subsequently went abroad seeking some professional anonymity, and found work in serious roles on stage at Vienna’s English Theatre.
Although consistent television work became elusive in Frank Williams' later career, he had a series of memorable cameos in very successful programmes over a number of years, including Minder, Hi de Hi, Bergerac, the mini-series dramatisation of Jeffrey Archer’s political novel, First Among Equals, and the multi-award-winning original British version of House of Cards (1990), starring Ian Richardson. He appeared in 14 of the 26 episodes of You Rang M’Lord?, (by Dad's Army creators Jimmy Perry and David Croft), and his final television credit was in Ruth Jones' Stella in 2017.
His final stage appearance was a celebration of his 90th birthday at the Leicester Square Theatre in 2021.

British television historian, podcaster and publisher, Oliver Crocker, worked with Frank Williams on several projects, including a short film biography, Dad's Army and Beyond: The Frank Williams Story, which played at the National Film Theatre for the Dad's Army 40th anniversary in 2008.
Oliver has shared his personal memories of Frank Williams, and has generously provided some fascinating audio of the great man himself reminiscing about his life and career, for a special podcast episode commemorating the first anniversary of his passing.
It was a real privilege to work with Oliver to put this together.

just had an absolutely sickening conversation with a 20 year old I work with wherein I had to impress upon her that her and her friends need to be extremely cautious going to the gay clubs right now with increasing attacks happening. make sure any very young, very newly adult queer people in your life know that we're a family and community and part of that is being willing to fight for your siblings lives if they're under attack. even if it's a person you despise, you stick up for your family and they will stick up for you. we are all we have. the cops refuse to help, and so do most people outside the community. we cannot survive without each other

It always angers me when people say that men would not put in so much effort to enact their violence on women and children because they do exactly that.
I was only seven when I learnt about just how hard men try to deceive the world so they can have free reign over young girls. I went on a Brownie trip to an orphanage back when I lived in Nigeria. The orphanage was just for girls which isn't uncommon, and it was massive, with its own school, shops, clinic etc. The girls had no reason to leave. It was set up by a pastor- a Nigerian who'd moved back from abroad.
I remember while we were there, one of the girls had just had a baby. She had seemed so old to me but looking back, she must have been around sixteen or seventeen. I remember my mum seemed suspicious when we were told the girl had run away and returned pregnant. She seemed even more so when we met the owner.
A year or two later, there was news on the radio. The man who had set up the orphanage had raped and impregnated several girls, selling their babies to prospective parents. I didn't even understand what rape meant back then but I remember my mum being devastated. Looking back, I think she might have felt guilty, perhaps she'd seen the signs: the girls not being allowed to leave the compound; teenage girls ending up pregnant. It seemed so obvious.
But no one questioned a man who used all of his money to build and set up a home for vulnerable girls, he was a pastor, educated, well-travelled. He could never have done something so cruel. But he did.
When I was writing this post, I tried to find any articles but I couldn't. They were just so many identical cases, man sets up orphanage, rapes and abuses children in the orphanage. Different cases, different years, one as recent as 2023. What I learnt back then and know for sure is that men would do anything, no matter how difficult or expensive, anything to have access to people they can abuse.
