HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHRISTINA RICCI ♡!
I'm so glad I'm not 20 years old anymore. I was in a hurricane. I'm a lot calmer now. I don't cause destruction for myself and others everywhere I go.

MEET LAYLA HAWTHORNE
Tumblr media
NAME: Layla Estelle Hawthorne.
AGE: Forty years old (born September 9th, 1983).
ZODIAC SIGN: Virgo (and she does fit the stereotype, the poor perfectionist).
ORIENTATION: Bisexual.
PRONOUNS: She/her.
SPECIES: Creaturewitch.
LOCATION: Nightshade Hollow, Virginia (though she lived in Baltimore for a while, but that… didn’t end well).
OCCUPATION: Public defender (Nightshade Hollow’s only practicing lawyer, who mainly handles traffic court cases and DUIs; not that she minds, she loves her job).
FACECLAIM: Christina Ricci.
Tumblr media
ABOUT: The first child of David and Maria Hawthorne, Layla’s parents were more than thrilled to have had a daughter like her father had wanted for some time, and even more relieved when their little girl turned out not to be a bloodwitch. No, their little Layla Estelle was a creaturewitch, as they discovered when a little three-year-old Layla had proclaimed to them that the family cat had a bladder infection they had even fully realized it was in pain - she could speak to animals and sense their emotions, more connected to the world’s beasts than any other type of witch would ever be with even their own familiars.
However, just because Layla wasn’t the current Hawthorne bloodwitch did not mean she was fully free from the burden of the family’s curse. The reveal of her younger brother Addy’s witch type had added considerable tension to the Hawthorne household, with David and Maria incredibly worried about being able to protect their son and, as a result, sometimes neglecting Layla in the interest of keeping her brother as safe as possible.
(Examples of this included leaving Layla to play outside longer than was probably reasonable while they researched the strongest protective wards known to witchkind, and that one time David had accidentally left Layla at a gas station because she’d gone in to use the bathroom and he’d seen a suspicious-looking woman eyeing Addy in the backseat of the car. Layla still hasn’t quite gotten over that last one.)
And while Layla didn’t resent her parents or her younger brother for any of this, knowing the risks that came with the Hawthorne curse - and indeed, she would often babysit Addy and Dante, once he was born, while David and Maria researched - it did make her start to long for new horizons, places beyond Nightshade Hollow where she could make her own life away from the struggles of being a Hawthorne witch. As such, as soon as she had finished high school (valedictorian of her class, of course) and been accepted into the University of Baltimore’s law school (regrettably without a scholarship, but she was willing to work part-time to pay it off), Layla departed from her little Virginia town and headed off to Maryland, ready to make a life of her own.
Layla’s years in Baltimore were some of her happiest; while studying to become a public defence lawyer, she made many friends both magical and human, and even met the woman who would become her fiancée. Annabelle was a spiritwitch, like Layla’s cousin Olly, and had run a small café in downtown Baltimore that Layla had frequented in order to assuage the stress of her new public defender position with caffeine. The two young women had made an instant connection, beginning to date after two years of knowing each other and moving in together quickly, and eventually Annabelle had proposed, getting down on one knee and popping the question on Layla’s thirtieth birthday and receiving an enthusiastic and tearful yes.
But their happiness hadn’t lasted - in between arguing about plans for the wedding and Annabelle spending more and more time at work, eventually Layla found that they had been engaged for two years and had made very little progress. And it all came to a head when Layla had come home early one night to find Annabelle sharing a bed with her assistant manager at the café, resulting in a bout of tearful shouting, a thrown engagement ring, and a sobbing Layla calling her mother from a motel room later that night and saying that she didn’t know where to go.
Of course David and Maria, who despite completely supporting their daughter had missed Layla terribly, where happy to welcome her home, Layla couldn’t help but fear that returning to Nightshade Hollow meant being a coward and simply running away from her problems. Even so, she couldn’t stand to be in Baltimore any longer, what with all the memories of Annabelle it held, and so Layla made her way back to her hometown, back to the woods and the small-town atmosphere and the family that, despite loving her life in Baltimore, she really had missed.
It took some time for Layla to get used to being in a small town again, but eventually she got back into the swing of things, relearning how to do her “hunting” in woods instead of dirty back alleys and taking over for the county’s former resident public defender, who had been looking to retire for some time. She even managed to find an awesome paralegal in the form of Sky Moorland, sibling of Nightshade Hollow’s police deputy, who also quickly became Layla’s best friend. She even adopted a beautiful little black-and-white cat she named Marilyn, who, despite not being her familiar, became a trusted confidant to Layla due to the creaturewitch’s ability to communicate with animals.
But then, so shortly after Layla had started getting her life back together, came the deaths of the Hawthorne siblings’ parents, which almost broke her cleanly apart. It had taken weeks for Layla to be able to even get out of bed and do things for herself without Sky’s prompting, and despite how hard she tried to remain the strong older sister for her brothers, she couldn’t even look at a picture of David and Maria without bursting into tears. Even now, she’s still not fully okay, but took months for Layla to climb out of the pit she’d fallen into and slowly get back to work, leaning heavily on her family (as well as Greer, the young shapeshifter Addy had recently adopted as a familiar) and Sky in order to, but by bit, piece herself back together.
Six years later, and Layla’s life has mostly gone back to normal - she works her public defence cases with Sky’s help, does some spellwork and goes hunting when she needs to, and does her best to keep her brothers from doing anything too stupid (an undertaking she and Olly get together to commiserate about quite regularly). But given everything that’s happened in her life so far, and the memories of the warnings her parents always gave her, Layla has never been completely confident in this happy period in all their lives being something that lasts.
And Christ, she will reflect later as the dangerous force pushing its way into Nightshade Hollow gets stronger and stronger, this might be the one time she takes no pleasure in being right.
Tumblr media
Confession time: I know Addy’s going to be the focus of the main storyline, but I honestly think Layla might be my favorite character in this universe. She just loves so fully and fiercely and would do anything for the people she cares about, and I really hope you guys love her as much as I do!!
Tagging the slasher OC fam: @raraeavesmoriendi, @jmathesonandsiblings, @shadowworldwanderers.

Wednesday spoilers: even though what ill say has been said already but I need to finally let it out.
again these are just some of my personal thoughts and what I think!
I'm so happy alot of ppl agrees the the "two main possible male lOvE IntERest" had little to no chemistry with her.
but first,
I'll start with everything I like:
I love everything in the show except the "love triangel romance/ romance in general" that they pushed unto Wednesday. it doesn't rlly add anything. Tyler would have had more impact if he had been a platonic trustworthy friend.
i love the Christina ricci's character was the real villain. that's a really nice bow on everything.
I love we actually saw alot of The Addams Family Dynamic in the show! like in this rendition and universe ykyk. Also always great to have more Gomez and Tish and they're relations with the town and Nevermore.
ofc how could I forget, Jenna Ortega's performance was phenomenal. I really did like the casting.
ofc wendays and enid's dynamic was everything I expected and more. everything about them I loved.
I hope we get to see more bianca bcs I'm curious to her and wendays more chilled rivalry/frenemies dynamic will be like. now that bianca don't really give a shit about xiaver. (hopefully. yall are too good for that boy. that boy needs therapy.)
Enid is literally a Walking Queer Allegory. I said what I said.
wenday and Thing are everything to me. we day's friendship with Eugene to me as well.
oke. now my complainly part/things j wished that happened instead and parts that made me say "that could've been written, chosen better.."
I've TRIED to be unbiased while watching, mostly in the "romance aspect". and I think they should've really just focused on its being about Platonic relationships yk.. they like, they didn't even have a ball to drop Yk. Like you expect Me to believe these wet limp dick white boys are gonna be.. WEDNESDAY ADDAMS 'S.. Potential.. love interest..?? youre joking.
the most annoying part about this was both Xiaver and Tyler were so... fucking entitled. like, WOW. a Girl wasn't mean to you and spoke to you with very basic surface level human decency!
Xiaver, just has a Resting Bitch Face. He didn't do anything wrong but like he's still shithead. And was annoying. (to me)
Tyler, I really wanted him to be the MLM Best Friend :(
but nay, I was wronged ofc. Tyler at first didn't really bother me as much. first few episodes, HE'S JUST SOME WHITE GUY. then it progresses He Annoys Me With a Burning Passion.
especially, That's ONE SCENE. THE "YOU'RE GIVING ME MIXED SIGNALS WEDNESDAY WHERE DO I STAND@!?#?#!@????" OH PIPE DOWN YOU ONLY GOT UR DATE IDEA BCS ENID DID THAT BIRTHDAY PARTY.
my thoughts were like: there's no way. Wednesday liked this boy. she's be manipulated and gaslit.
And yeah Last few Episodes I was correct. it gave me more reason to hate Tyler's ass and I think he should've been brutally murder yk.
I love hunter doohan's performance though, thanks for taking one for the team King <3 He played the bland straight white boy monstour murder.
Now, Enid and Ajax. they were fine.. Ajax is the basic textbook goofy, nice guy who does weed, that just has madusa snake hair—
and omg I laughed so hard when he stoned himselfed like that, it's so perfect and stupid that a teenager with that ability would have the happen to them. it was so fucking funny to me.—
they're relationship is so shallow and mid to me idk. I mean, they do act like a typical teenage het couple.
it's just that, Enid liking a boy who she barely talks obsessesing over him but then also when she got stood up by him. Enid started liking another boy that she just talked to sharing same interests but mostly again just very bare minimum.
I'm not saying she's a shallow person, more say.. yk just a subconsciously finding and filling that, " you have to have a nice boyfriend bcs that's how the world is supposed to be " box...
in short yk, compulsory hetero normativity.
like cmon.. WHAT DO YOU MEAN UR MOM WANTS YOU TO GO TO "CONVERSION CAMP" ? WHAT DO YOU MEAN WHEN YOU WANTED HER TO ACCEPT YOU AS YOU ARE? WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU WOLFED OUT JUST IN TIME YOU WANTED TO SAVE WEDNESDAY? what do you mean you didn't run into ur bf's after something traumatic but instead run into ur roommates to give her a hug like she'll never let go?
yeah. basically most of my complaints are in the romance. it's Criminally hetero. and I've dealt with alot of hetero relationships endgame media that would have made more sense and thematical it was queer.. augh. I'm gonna watch warrior nun.
I genuinely hope they were very intentional with writing Enid and Wednesday literally the only one with romantic tension and queer subtext..
like, cmon. Wenclair has paralleled Gomez and Tish so much in this show. be for fucking real.
okay that's it. most of what I've said has been said. last thing I wanna say is thank you for your time and effort to read this and.. Wednesday is both queer coded and autism coded.

My thoughts on Netflix’s Wednesday - Season One
(Minor spoilers)
The Good
The Main Character - This was the point that could have killed the show if they had gotten it wrong. I loved how Jenna Ortega played the character, most of the writting for her ranged from great to at least okay, and the aesthetic was perfect. The morbid interests and dark humor were spot on, and she managed to stay true to the character’s “cold” demeanor even in scenes where she is happy, sad or angry.
Protective Big Sister - I loved seeing how much Wedsnesday and Pugsley cared about each other, even with her being “emotionless.” So many people forget that her “torturing” him is really a way of showing affection, so it was nice to not only have him say he missed being waterboarded, but also have her go out of her way to defend him when he was actually being mistreated. It is a shame that he wasn’t in more of the episodes. I think the show would have been better focusing on Wednesday, but still having her little brother going to the same school as her, so they could interact more.
A Helping Hand - While it would have been nice to have Pugsley form a trio with them, Thing and Wednesday as a duo was a lot of fun. The show really did a good job at making him very expressive and with a ton of personality, even though he is just a hand (who is allowed to tell people to go fuck themselves now, so thanks for that, Netflix). The scars were a cool touch, the effect was good, and they made the right call by NOT explaining why/how he is alive - and even going as far as making it so even the current Addams don’t really know it either.
Seriously, I could make a post all about how much I love Thing, not just in this version, but in the comics, 60′s show, and 90′s movies. It’s absurd how charismatic a HAND can be. I cannot believe THE most emotional scene in the entire show was all about him, and I 1000% bought it.
Points for the actors for making it believable that they can understand him, bond with him, be annoyed at him, or scared of it, because half of Thing’s performance is on the people reacting to him - again, gotta hand it (hehehe) to Jenna Ortega since she interacted with him the most, and I never questioned how this was happening or that he was family to her.
Daddy’s Girl - Gomez calling Wednesday things like his “little scorpion” and her assuring him that he was a good dad was really sweet, and it was his best scene in the whole show.
Proud Mama - There’s something too cute about Morticia loving to see her little girl digging a grave.
The Cello Scenes - They were dramatic and cool and made Wednesday happy. Everything I could ask for. Obviously, the best one has to be her playing it while causing mayhem at a celebration to a pilgrim - it just reminded me of that epic scene of the Thanksgiving play in Addams Family Vallues.
Her Friends - It is always nice when the normal (or not so normal) people bond with the Addams, and I love Wednesday’s struggle to understand/experience emotion while bonding with them.
Uncle Fester - Pretty much everything about his part on the show was great, I loved him bickering with Thing and spending some quality time with Wednesday, and it was cool that they actually used his power to conduct electricity in a way that was both useful to the story AND funny.
Morbid Fun -  Obligatory for any minimally decent story that involves the Addams. Personal favorites have to be Wednesday’s birthdays, her making her roommate pass out by being too excited to talk about violent murders, and her trying to murder the swim team with piranhas because no one tortures her brother except for her.
Nods To Past Incarnations Of The Addams - They put a big, dumb smile on my face whenever I spotted them. There was just the right amount to pay sweet homages without it getting annoying or too meta.
Christina Ricci - I can’t be objective about this. Her character didn’t always work, but I love Christina, and she can make even the dumbest parts sound either convincing or at least enjoyably bad (especially her defending herself from angry bees by shooting them, Florida Man style). It is also great to see her and Jenna play off of each other on screen. My brain sometimes forgot that I wasn’t seeing two Wednesdays interacting.
The Narration - Any opportunity for Wednesday’s dry, dark humor is a win in my books.
The Bad
The Narration (Again) - When they use it for a generic detective monologue to make the cliff-hangers more “important”, it kind of ruins the vibe.
Mommy Issues - Really? THE ADDAMS FAMILY has a problem of the parents expecting the kids to follow on their foot-steps, regardless of their wishes and explicit verbal objections? REALLY? The family whose whole deal is “Happier than all the normies because they actually LISTEN and appreciate each other the way they are?” Fuck off!
Even in things like the 90′s movies, when they send the kids to summer camp, they only do it because they were tricked into thinking that’s what Wednesday and Pugsley want, and when their baby magically turns normal, they’re not happy but try to adapt for his sake. You can’t force the Addams Family into a typical family drama and play it straight, it just flat out doesn’t work and goes against the very core idea of the characters.
The Tone/Teen Drama -   I was going to put this on the Meh category, but it got annoying real fast, especially when centered around characters that were not as interesting or well written as Wednesday - who like I said, was already struggling to make that shit work.
The Addams Family started as satire. It’s strengths are on THAT genre. It can be light-hearted, or morbid, but it has to be funny and not take itself too seriously, even when taking the drama up to eleven. The show really should have kept that in mind. I’m not saying there were no fun moments, but they played the drama too straight in some situations, and by doing so they leaned on the character’s weakenesses.
Gomez & Morticia’s (Lack Of) Chemistry - This one is painful for me to write. Gomez and Morticia are one of the best, if not THE best, couples in any media, so to have an adaptation in which every declaration of their undying love for each other feels fake is just sad. We even had an entire episode focused on what was supposed to be a super romantic moment for them, and I was counting the seconds for it to be over. If it had been Angelica and Raul, or Carolyn and John, it would have been the most romantic thing ever, even with...
The “Gomez Might Be A Murderer” Plot - Really? Gomez and Morticia never told ANYONE about the time he let people believe he was a “murderer” (it was self-defense for God’s sake) out of love for Morticia? Not even to their eldest child, who mutilated and nearly killed people to protect her brother?
And come on, WEDNESDAY is shocked that her dad might have killed someone? WHY were the Addams taking that shit so seriously? Their family tree has ALL kinds of lunatics, killers, and psychopaths, plenty of which were either locked away forever or brutally murdered, and they CELEBRATE IT. Why are they ashamed/scared now, and ONLY for this plot, which was so banal it was resolved IN A SINGLE EPISODE?
This was completely out of place, to the point that if someone told me this idea was meant for some regular teen drama, was never used, and the writers just slapped a supernatural aspect to it as the last second to force it into this story.
Random “Woke” Lines/Plot - Netflix, stop trying to pretend you give a shit about things like oppression and bigotry, or at least get better at pretending you care. It’s so fucking fake and distracting, it completely took me out of the show, though thankfully it wasn’t that frequent, and was often dropped almost right away - but it just highlights how out of place it is.
Again, one of the few moments that actually worked was Wednesday playing the cello while she burns everything down, especially because that one also had the aspect of “Don’t force Wednesday to do things if you’re not ready for her to retaliate and then rub some harsh truths in your face”
Gomez’s Kiss Sounds - WHY? JUST WHY? My autistic ass couldn’t stand that shit.
Zeta Jones’s Morticia Voice - What happened here? Did she try something and no one had the heart to tell her it wasn’t working, or did Tim Burton force her to do it? Who should I blame for this? I want answers.
The Ugly
The CGI - Plenty of it looked bad, but the monster in particular was fucking hideous, like holy shit, couldn’t Netflix have TRIED a little? That was part of why the serious tone of some scenes didn’t work - HOW am I supposed to take that fake-ass shit as a threat? Thing could have been the stuff of nightmares if he wanted to, while this poor fucker couldn’t scare an infant.
Morticia’s Look - Who the fuck was responsible for this? I’d like to have a word with them. Was the budget REALLY so short that they had to dress Zeta Jones up in a crappy Halloween costume they found at the last second? The dress didn’t suit her, the make up could have been improved, and the wig looked ridiculously fake. Sometimes the lighting also made things worse. I’m not asking for a Bela Lugosi effect on her eyes like the 90′s movies, but still, they could have put some care into it.
Gomez’s Look - Not quite as bad as Morticia’s, but still not great. I’ll give them points for trying to be faithful to the original comics’ design, but they went a little too far with it, and it got uncanny - not the good kind, like Uncle Fester. At least it just looked weird instead of cheap.
The Meh
We Have Hogwarts At Home - The school and all of it’s drama just wasn’t weird enough to be cool, or normal enough to clash with Wednesday. I think the short number of episodes really limited how much the writers could explore the other students’ powers - for fuck’s sake, they have a kid who can make his drawings come to life, that’s cool as hell, but it comes up ONCE.
The Love Triangle - Did ANYONE like this? Even Jenna Ortega said it sucked. I guess, if you put a gun to my head, I’d pick Tyler to be with Wednesday, but I really think the romance wasn’t needed, and it took me four episodes to be able to tell the guys apart. The only thing I’ll say, is that is not as bad as the fandom as a whole claims it is - either that or I’ve seen so many worse love triangles that this one looked better in contrast. Regardless, points for them.
The Mystery - I don’t fucking care. It got obvious, repetitive, and convoluted real fast. It was just harmless enough that I could turn off my brain while watching.
Conclusion
This wasn’t the worst adaptation/remake with the Addams Family’s characters, but it was also far from the best, which is a shame because it has potential. I’ll probably not rewatch this season, but I will at least give season 2 a chance and hope that they fix some of the show’s problems.
I know it will still be a mystery, but it might be a better one, and perhaps it won’t take too much time away from the best part of the show: just seeing Wednesday going about her day, doing weird or straight up evil shit, awkwardly interacting with normal people and bonding with them, then introducing her new friends to the loving, fun insanity that is her iconic family when they show up to visit her.
