So in love with how NBC Hannibal clearly references the Hannibal films but instead of taking them as an inspiration for Hannibal’s character, the parallels between the movies and the series always depict Will instead.
Tumblr media
Like this scene. This is a visual reference to Hannibal Rising (2007), where Hannibal kills one of the men that ate his sister.
Tumblr media
In the show it’s WILL taking Hannibal’s place.
After this scene in Hannibal Rising, Hannibal continues to eat the man’s cheeks.
Tumblr media
Sounds familiar?
Tumblr media
Also, Will’s whole prison setup is a mirror of the setup in Silence of the Lambs (1991).
Tumblr media
Hannibal in SOTL vs Will at the end of season 1/beginning of season 2:
Tumblr media
They could have done the obvious, which is link the tv show Hannibal to the movie Hannibals (which, to be fair, they did in S3b; Hannibal’s prison chic minimalism was very much inspired by Manhunter (1986)). But I find it so interesting that they chose to visually mirror Hannibal’s development in Will’s storyline!! They’re the same. Will is following in Hannibal’s footsteps, he’s tracing it back to where it all began to become him. Ugh

So today I got recommended this tv series from 2008 "In treatment". And as soon as the first episode began I realized something.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It began in the same way the first therapy session we see in Hannibal begins.
And I highly believe it's not a coincidence. A lot of Dr. Paul's mannerism is very similar to Dr. Lecter's so I'm thinking Mads might have watched this to get inspired for how to play a therapist.

― Where does the difference between the past and the future come from? ― Before you and after you.
Inspired by the same quote fromt he Hannibal TV series, as I cannot unsee the parallels between Will & Hannibal and Chris & Wesker.

Finished Strangers From Hell/Hell is Other People
Well, I'll give it a 7, overall it was a good experience. Such a mix of Hannibal and the 5th season of AHS (not in terms of quality, character interaction reminded me)
!spoilers!
I didn't like the way the nature of characters were revealed. The villain is an artist, but mostly in the dialogues, it was hinted at but not shown properly. Yeah, for me two pretentious statements and a bracelet made of teeth is not enough. The motivation isn't quite clear to me either, like it's not serious enough. Are they bad because they're bad? Because they lived with a person who encouraged their illness? Well then devote some dialogue to that, otherwise they only slip in scenes with the victims being abused. I really missed the personality of the hostess aka the creator. Maniac mum.
Some kind of simplistic approach, as if they have watched TV series and decided to make a Frankenstein's monster out of the types of killers. The actions of the villainous villains didn't give me the feeling of some skillful manipulations, they are rather clumsy.
The mc's girlfriend doesn't have time for him? Really? She doesn't have time to talk to him when they see each other several times in 10 episodes and each time she refuses to listen to him? They're actively chatting, you can share your experiences there too. I know the whole "don't burden your neighbour" thing, but they're not school friends, they're not colleagues, they didn't just start dating, they're in a relationship and complaining about life to loved ones is commonplace for everyone in general.
80% of their dialogue:
-Hey, what's going on with you?
-Hi, I'm having a rough time and…
-Oh, my God, shut up. Why can't you be normal?!?!!!! * running away *
here I'm getting more and more angry B!tch, listen to him for like 2 minutes, he doesn't say anything weird or scary, YOU ASKED HIM. And it's not the idiocy of the characters or "problems of modern society" it's the bullshit that's necessary for the script to work. Honestly, this whole love line doesn't make any sense at all. It's a function. I didn't get into the girlfriend character, I don't find their relationship pleasant, I don't believe that "it" could be a pressure point on protagonist. The main villain has more chemistry with the main character. And here you could say "that's the point, his priorities change, the villain lures him" BUT! To justify mc's mental anguish, the bond between him and his girlfriend must also be strong. He has to have something he can lose.
The ending is just… "yeah, not everyone will understand." The whole thing with popular "highly intelligent" literature and games of who's crazy – doesn't work for me. It looks like a fanfiction by a 16 year old schoolboy. Honestly, mentioning Kafka so much lowered quality of the series for me. I understand where you got inspiration from, ok? The plot of "The Metamorphosis" is on the surface, mc himself says so, and not once. Why explain the things we understand? Better explain the things we don't.

im tempted to write my essay about the differences of the canons of hannibal (nbc) and the books. the tv show fits itself right into the hinted canon between hannibal rising and red dragon, but while in red dragon (the book) it is implied will graham had only met hannibal once or twice before (resulting in him being stabbed and ultimately retiring) but still resulting in his arrest, while the tv show has them growing close beforehand. but even in the books, hannibal had an obsession with will, recognizing that he could understand him better than anyone else. but will is never mentioned after red dragon (probably because he fucks off into actual retirement with molly and his stepson)
i also thought red dragon might have been released after silence of the lambs and hannibal to explain why will graham was never even mentioned after, but as it turns out it was released in 1981, making it the first released of the series.
this also explains why hannibal has very little presence throughout the red dragon book. thomas harris explains in the authors' notes sections of the books i have how he conceptualizes characters until they're very real to him. in the notes on red dragon, he describes where he lived and his inspiration for red dragon and will graham specifically, which is exactly how will graham's life is portrayed in the tv show. which i thought was a pretty neat detail you wouldn't catch if you were familiar with just the movies.
i have more than enough critics of the show and how the plot could've been more consistent with the canon of the books while still maintaining the homoerotic vibe the director was going for. and also just silly little nitpicky details that dont really matter. but overall it's still my favorite tv show of all time

❤️🎁💭📚 for the ask game <3
❤️ What is your favorite line that you’ve written in a fic?
can’t commit myself to just one so:
When you were still active duty, there had been talk of an SAS operator who transformed walls and floors into canvases with splatters of blood-red ink, whose gruesome bodies of work spoke to his mastery of the medium, a craftsmanship that left quite the impression for such stories to travel all the way across the pond.
The familiarity, the predictability, the constancy—it soothed the stir-crazy soldier in you and pacified the persistent paranoia that plagued you outside of active combat.
Your sense of loneliness, however, was unique in that it never waned nor did it wax, faithfully sticking by you on both your most joyous days as well as your most despondent nights, neither receding nor expanding.
🎁 Have a piece of a WIP you want to share?
from chapter three of that human, that demon:
You couldn’t shake the feeling that the soil here was abundant in the natural fertilizer of the dead, decomposing matter provided by your comrades and foes alike. Beneath the ground, the roots of local flora carried your spilled blood as well as the blood you had helped spill, feeding it to the vibrant red tulips that were currently in full bloom. Gusts of wind blew the stench of burning corpses and rotting flesh your way; logic told you it was practically impossible for smells to travel the miles of distance between the city and the air base. You also knew that the pungent odor of sin, of your sins, wasn’t so landlocked.
💭 What inspires you and your writing?
the hannibal tv series permanently rewired my brain, and i wish i was exaggerating, but alas i am not. i think hannigram is peak romance, and i’ve been on the metaphoric/literal cannibalism as symbolism in literature wave ever since
📚 Is there a fanfic or fanfic writer you recommend?
these are some of the writers i try to keep up with since im always interested to see what they’re cooking up or talking about:
@halcyone-of-the-sea @halfmoth-halfman @dotcie @alittleposhtoad @50cal-fullauto @parttimepr0phet @soapskneebrace @lunarvicar @moondirti

"nothing is going to be okay" sounds like it's gonna hurt... tell me more.
It's meant to hurt. You and me both.
Adler's PiPs ~ Project: Nothing Is Going to Be Okay
Also known as Adler-toys-with-the-Major-Character-Death-tag. This is an exploration of every universe where Kevin, Andrew and/or Neil do not make it out. Sometimes Kevin dies; sometimes it's Andrew; other times it's Neil. Someone always dies. Doesn't matter if it's Kandreil, Andreil, Kandrew, Kevneil. Sometimes it's because of canon going slightly to the left. Sometimes it's because it's a totally different universe. Every variation is always merciless.
The origins of such a fun project? Music. It all stems from my personal playlist of the saddest soundtracks or instrumental pieces i religiously listen to, which i won't share until i finally get to writing this collection of grief. So far i have 96 pieces on that playlist. Will i write the boys dying 96 times? i doubt it, but each piece represents a universe with a specific scene and vision. sometimes if it's a soundtrack, i put the boys in that universe and kill 'em. sometimes it's the title of the piece that awakes something ugly in me. sometimes it's a combination of words and vibes. the possibilities are endless. the grief is infinite, a loop, inescapable. yes i got mental problems. yes i got meds for it. why do u ask.
Why the fun title? Ask Andrew.
"Your parents are dead, you are not fine, and nothing is going to be okay. This is not news to you. But from now until May you are still Neil Josten and I am still the man who said he would keep you alive. I don't care if you use this phone tomorrow. I don't care if you never use it again. But you are going to keep it on you because one day you might need it. On that day you're not going to run. You're going to think about what I promised you and you're going to make the call. Tell me you understand." (TRK)
Now! Some of the wips in the collection:
So This Is Christmas: based on Happy Xmas (War Is Over) by Gabrielle Aplin, i revisit Neil's days at the Nest and add a few more casualties. the boys take their turn kicking the bucket. this one is multi-chaptered.
fun fact: there are only 3 songs in the playlist that have lyrics: one of them is in an Arabic or Persian language that i do not speak/read, the other two are in English (Happy Xmas + my tears ricochet)
i would also like to note that Gabrielle Aplin's Happy Xmas is part of my aftg soundtrack project where i'm trying to imagine the series as a TV show and assemble music for specific scenes in multi-episodes seasons. this one i imagine playing with slow-motion scenes cutting back-and-forth between Neil's torture in the Nest over the holidays and the Foxes celebrating in NYC. my magnum opus if you will. i'm not even kidding. all my self-confidence is in that divine mission.
Andrew's Farewell: Hunger Games AU. a classic. the song? iykyk. the victim? iykyk.
On the Nature of Day(light): based on the piece by Max Richter (all variations and covers, but i do favor the original and the entropy). canon divergence AU where Kevin also intervenes at the end of TKM, when the Foxes win the Championships and there's the Riko-Neil-Andew showdown. establishing then destroying Kandreil.
Tennessee: based on the Hans Zimmer soundtrack for the film Pearl Harbor. i took inspiration from the title and the music, not the movie. totally war-unrelated. excerpt (Andreil, other Baltimore AU):
"We could go... We could go... to Tennessee..." "There's nothing in Tennessee, Abram." "Exactly..." *shaky pained smile*
Thin Orange Line: based on Journey to the Line by Hans Zimmer & Gavin Greenaway, from the film The Thin Red Line. War AU + Kandrew + Soldier Kevin Day carrying injured/unconscious Soldier Andrew Minyard to safety. only one makes it.
Other inspirations come from the soundtracks of The Last of Us (1 + 2 + HBO show), The Haunting of Bly Manor / Hill House, Max Richter, Hannibal (NBC show), House of the Dragon, Dune (Denis Villeneuve/Hans Zimmer), and many other shows, films, video games and original compositions / composers.
this project is my beloved baby. i remember it being the first push to create since a long while. i know it is very very sad, and that MCD is very rarely liked/read. i'm still invested. maybe i'll try out NaNoWriMo for a 3rd time with this project. i'm not giving up!
thank you anon, from the bottom of my heart, for giving me the opportunity to info-dump and for allowing me to see that i actually have much more figured out than i thought. i'm glad the hurt/no comfort vibe bewitched you.

friday roundup + a list
I follow a few people who do monthly reading/etc updates and I have always enjoyed reading them and been slightly jealous that I couldn't seem to stick too it, it always felt too overwhelming for the end of the month and I'd put it off, but! idea! combine with my little friday list posts which I'd also stopped doing because I was afraid they were boring so...combo might be interesting enough for me to keep doing them!
reading:
Cabin at the End of the World - Paul Tremblay: I liked this one, especially how, similar to The Pallbearer's Club, you end the novel not really knowing what was real or not and the point is it doesn't matter what was real, only how the characters understood reality.
Bloom - Delilah S Dawson: For book club. It definitely had it's issues (it didn't start off super well), but it was short and captured that fun Hannibal-like energy, where the foreshadowing is super obvious and you're just like noooo nooooooooo girl don't eat it! (I was gratified to get to the acknowledgments and find it was indeed inspired by Hannibal.)
(in progress) Lord of the Rings: Keeping on track with the one-chapter-a-day read through for Lent! We just finished The Two Towers today, onto Return of the King tomorrow.
(in progress) (phone book) Light of the Jedi - Charles Soule: So I'm trying to keep one book going on my phone (a 'phone book' lol) to prevent doomscrolling, and right now I'm rereading the High Republic series and continuing on. I fell behind after Phase 1 ended, but I'd really like to catch back up. Light isn't my favorite of this series and it's not my least favorite -- tbh I stopped reading after Phase 1 because I hated Midnight Horizon that much, I'll be skipping that one on this reread -- I read a review when it first came out that said it felt like the whole novel was inciting incident and I think that's exactly it, it has to do a little bit too much to establish the setting and characters, and never really feels like it gets going. Besides, I tend to like things a little crunchier, so some of the optimism of the start gets kind of grating for me personally. Much prefer the followups and the aftermath, but this isn't bad and it's certainly better than doomscrolling!
(in progress) Notes on an Execution - Danya Kukafka : This is so good. It's so good. I waited a while for the library hold and it was 100% worth the wait, it has that literary fiction style that I really love in my genre fiction on occasion.
watching (tv):
The Bequeathed (Netflix): Didn't live up to my expectations, but that might be on me because I read a review that erroneously called it a 'creature feature' and I was like 'damn, there's going to be a creature, that's crazy, when's the creature showing up??' There was no creature. And the solve to the mystery wasn't that interesting either. Meh.
(in progress) Silo (AppleTV): This show is surprisingly good, as I posted early this week. Like. I heard about it from a true crime podcast ad read, and just kind of watched it because I have a free AppleTV trial and a crush on Rebecca Ferguson. It wasn't meant to actually be good, but...it is??? It's really engaging, and I think shows how much good acting and direction can elevate a script. The ending of the last episode I watched was objectively kind of silly, but it was so well done you felt like it was super serious. Damn though, this is totally going to be the thing that gets me to keep paying for AppleTV because there's going to be another season. Damn. This is how they get you.
watching (film):
Dune Part 1 (2021): I made everyone watch Dune Part 1 in preparation and also it was my birthday and they could not say no. I think my mom made it....15 minutes? but my dad and I had a great time
Dune Part 2 (2024): I was so on top of the IMAX tickets for this, I refreshed that page a hundred times last monday to get the perfect seats in the mid-center and then I did not BUDGE for all 3ish hours of this movie. It was. So good. There was one shot that legit made me feel like I was on a roller coaster. I think I'm going to go see it again next tuesday. It was so good.
video game update: Still stuck on Dead Space. Still stuck on Cult of the Lamb. I'm figuring out how to balance side quests and the main storyline with KOTOR, which is progress, and on my perpetual Fallen Order playthrough I just did the sad Venator side quest and then got to Dathomir for what would have been the first time if I was not always so set on immediately getting the double-bladed lightsaber upgrade.
craft update: I'm two short rows away from being done with the short row section on my sweater vest. Infinity scarf has been derailed because I tangled a skein of yarn so badly it's probably going to take hours to fix it and I need that color to keep going. So. Tabled.
weekend list:
work (boo) - but work has been pretty slow and fridays are my wfh day so the below items will probably partially get done while I'm on the clock
laundry (also boo) / tidy
it's going to rain all day so the secret goal of friday is really just not to leave my house
work on current long wip which, yes, I did end up restarting -- or rather just starting the second draft earlier than I expected. I was going to push through and have a full rough draft before I started the second but it was really rough and I think now that I have 1) the most self-indulgent scenes, 2) all of the 'plot exposition' scenes written it was time to start going in order and straightening out inconsistencies and repetition.
I finally got an HDMI splitter so I can use the PS4 and get un-stuck on Cult of the Lamb (I haven't checked on my cult in so long!!), I just need to reorganize the wires
maybe untangle yarn. maybe. but I think that's going to wait for sunday at the earliest. I need some cooling off time, but once I can look at it without rage, I think it's just a matter of putting on a movie and being patient
go for a run
I hope this is....mildly interesting at least, if not feel free to block the lists tag XD have a good weekend! <3

For a personal introduction discussion board for my anthro class I decided to full send it for one of the prompts and straight up expose my love for all things fandom and fanfic on the first day of class oops
When I hear “community,” I am inclined to think of the idea of fandom, though it may seem like a trivial thing. Whether it be for a movie, TV show, or book series, various pieces of media become a source of connection and community for many people of all ages. One of the things I love about fandoms is that you get the chance to see a plethora of countless different opinions, concepts, and spins on the fictional places and characters that are loved by so many people. For example, I consider myself to be a part of many different fandoms, such as Harry Potter, Sherlock (BBC), Supernatural, Good Omens, and Hannibal (NBC), for instance, and I love finding fanart, fanfiction, analyses of the media, and more, relating to those shows and movies. There are countless incredible works out there, whether it be fanart, music, meta, writing, or more inspired by the different pieces of media that people love, and these bring people together and bring light to many talented and creative individuals out there. Anyone can be part of many different fandoms, and there are many roles people play in them, from authors to artists, and those who just like to consume and appreciate the work that others share within the community. I am an artist, for example, and as I’ve already said, love to make art of the characters that I have grown up with that I love and sharing them within various fandom spaces. I also love to read written fan works. I have read many fanfics I would actually consider to be even better written than some published works I have read, and the amount of time and work put into them is incredible. There are many stereotypes and preconceptions people have about fanfiction, but many of them are extremely lengthy, detailed, and impressively well-written works that deserve much appreciation for their plots, character development, and expression of events and characters that people already have grown to love. It could be seen as a challenge for people in the sense that creativity can be difficult to master, as well as originality, but the beautiful thing about fandom and creation is that most people don’t even care about redundancy and repetition in content, whether it be in tropes used in writing, relationships depicted, art produced, and more. In fact, fanfiction is largely consumed for the exact purpose of people looking for a certain trope or type of story that they love so much that they actively search out that type of story/art, and artists and authors in fandoms should not feel bad about or hesitant to sharing art and stories that they think are overdone because the truth is that their work will be appreciated by someone out there, and the best way to get better at writing, drawing, etc. is to keep writing, drawing, and creating.
