Dead on Your Feet- Chapter 1
Masterlist Here
Tumblr media
An AU in which Hangman is team leader and takes the missile to save Rooster. As he struggles to get himself and his teammate home, Jake is pushed to his limits in more ways than even he anticipated.
I did post this before but that was before I learned how to add gifs and edit so I'm re-posting and all the chapters this time! Enjoy!
It's surprisingly easy to undo 30 years of self-preservation. 30 years of pushing people away, keeping them at arm's length. 'The only person you can count on in life is yourself', a lesson Jake learned from his parents as they hurled insults and belts and anything else they could at him growing up. The nasty words bit as sharp as the bruises. The loneliness and despair were the most painful of all and yet they become his closest companions in life.
Jake spent the past 10 years pretending to be a one dimensional cocky asshole instead of any semblance of a decent human being. He always thought it was only to spare the others from himself. From the broken, feeble, good for nothing piece of shit that his parents liked to call him on their more generous days.
It's still true but now he starting to think it was also to spare himself the heartbreak of losing people close to him. Of having someone else in the world that is supposed to care for him choosing to hurt him instead. The pain from trusting someone else and having them leave him hanging.
Maybe his call-sign is fitting after all. Irony is funny like that.
He's called back to Top Gun for a mission that he'd be lucky to be chosen for and even luckier to survive. He sees faces he's burned in the past and he fights the urge to apologize to them. Instead he makes them hate him more. It's not hard to do, they all embrace the next battle willingly.
"Hangman, the only place you'll lead anyone is an early grave"
It's true isn't it? Rooster's words might have stung but they weren't unfounded. His father told him best, he's too weak to be anything of importance. Too broken to do anything but sink and pull others down with him. An early grave was always what he thought he would get, be it by his father's hands, an enemy's missile or just his own stupid recklessness. But it's only supposed to be an early grave for him, not anyone else. He couldn't bear anyone else dying for him.
The training for this mission tests him more than he's ever been tested in his life. He battles with Captain Mitchell, with Rooster, with the rest of the team and most importantly with himself. He's forced to listen as the only person he lets over his walls almost dies in G-Loc. He sees the aftermath of Phoenix and Bob ejecting from a bird strike. He stands at attention as Maverick calls his name, calls him team leader, and watches as the others can't stop the disdain from showing on their faces from Maverick's decision.
They think he'll leave them. He can't blame them. Doesn't stop it from hurting worse than his father's fist in his gut or his mother's sharp words.
"I swear to God Hangman", Phoenix begins as they both find each other in the early morning hours before the mission, sleep an impossibility from the thoughts circling in their heads, "if you even think about leaving us behind like you did in training..."
He only nodded at her out there, the wind whipping them both as they listened to the waves in the darkness. He knew then, like he knows now, that his words hold no merit on the tarmac or the deck of a carrier, they only hold purchase in the air.
So he shows it there.
Jake flies the mission at the speed he knows how but he makes sure Natasha stays on his tail instead of eating his dust. He gives her vectors and observations, warns her of the low bridge coming up and when to start to go inverted. He takes lead like he is supposed to, not pushing too hard but not letting off the gas either. Their team swoops down into the valley and Bob's laser gets a lock. Jake lets loose a missile and it's a perfect hit. One miracle down.
"You're the one choice I had the hardest time making" Maverick tells him the morning of the mission, after Jake gives up his feeble attempt at trying to put anything into his stomach. "It's not about your skill level, that was never the issue." His captain refuses to turn away, gives him the respect that he's not quite sure he's earned of looking him in the eye. "I know you're not the guy you portray yourself to be" Maverick tells him. “Well not entirely that guy", his captain concedes, the tiniest smile edging on his lips. Maverick takes a step closer and then a paternal hand finds Jake’s shoulder and he doesn't know if he should shake it off or start to cry. He chooses neither as Maverick keeps speaking, "you need to trust them if they are ever going to trust you. The only way everyone gets home is if you work together as a team. I know deep down in here," he hits Jake's chest, right over his heart, "that's what you want as well. Show them, show me, make me proud son."
Jake spent his entire life wishing for even a fraction of that encouragement from his own parents. To get it from Maverick so willingly, so easily, tells Jake that he cannot let his Captain down. He will make him proud if it's the last thing he does.
So he supports Rooster over the radio when the other pilot starts to freeze up instead of yelling at him. He keeps the team in some kind of formation instead of panic when the surface to arm missiles start flying and it's chaos in the sky. It would be so easy for Jake to use the speed he is accustomed to, to get himself back to the carrier first and leave the others to follow him if they have the skill to keep up. He doesn't even entertain the thought though. Jake stays in the fight, he stays with his team and he listens, he calls out positions and he watches. Until he forced to act.
"Don't leave us hanging out there"
It's Bradshaw's only response when he tells him to give 'em hell on the tarmac.
Those are the last words Jake hears before they launch. They are the words stuck on repeat in his mind as he flies the course and they are the only words Jake remembers when he hears Rooster yell that he is out of flares. Jake thinks of nothing else as he swoops his jet in quickly, turning vertical to shield Rooster as much as he can, letting his own flares go. His plan works, Rooster is able to get out of there and the first round of missiles explode in the air.
Unfortunately his plan didn't go beyond that. It didn't take into account that he would be exposed, basically belly up in enemy airspace and it certainly didn't account for the second round of missiles finding him so quickly. Those missiles hit his unprotected jet easily, sending him into a mammoth of a fireball and screeching towards the ground.
The others are yelling all at once. He can't make out much of it beyond his name and the pleas to eject. By the time he gets his bearings enough to try to pull the cord, nothing is working and he's too low to the ground anyway. He can try to take the plane down himself, muscle to a some kind of controlled landing but he's basically holding a dead stick. Jake hears a few more pleas on the radio, can make out Captain Mitchell screaming at command to let him launch in support but he slowly tunes it out as he watches his plane fall from the sky.
He hopes the others head back to the carrier, head back home.
He hopes Coyote forgives him for this, for leaving him when he promised he wouldn't. Jake never deserved a friend like Javy, who took all his pushing and just held on tighter. He hopes leaving Coyote everything he has in his name shows the other man how much he meant to him. How he was the only person he had.
He hopes the Navy doesn't call his parents, or if they do, that his parent's don't weirdly insist that he be buried in Texas. He always hoped he would be by an ocean, somewhere calm and peaceful. He doesn't expect visitors but he hopes he will be surrounded by people who do get them, if only to siphon off some of their love.
He hopes he made Captain Mitchell proud.
The last thing he sees before his plane crashes into the snow is a bird low in the sky. It makes him think of Rooster oddly enough and if it's strange that his last moments on earth are spent thinking of that porn-stached, hideous Hawaiian shirt wearing pilot, Jake doesn't dwell on it. All he hopes is that Rooster forgives Maverick for whatever history they have between them. Jake knows it goes beyond what he un-tactfully brought up in class that day. He hopes he gives the two of them the time to fix it.
If he did then he could never regret it.

Hangman helping the daggers
Phoenix leaving the Hard Deck to catch her Uber and a creepy guy follows her. Phoenix doesn't want to deal with some loser, but her ride is almost here so she'll hold off on confronting the guy. The guy gets closer and closer, no one around her is helping until Hangman steps in front of her. Pushes the guy away and stays with her until her ride is here. They both say nothing, thanks is understood and they go their ways.
Fanboy gets a flat tire and his phone is dead so he can't call anyone for help. There's no one there cause he's there late at Top Gun, he's concerned on how he's going to call for help. Then Hangman drives past in his truck, then turns around asking if Mickey''s okay. He gets told about the flat and Hangman nods getting out of his seat opening the backseat door to get out his Jack and wrench out. Jake fixes the tire and Fanboy thanks him and offers a beer as payment.
Rooster hurts his hand where he's unable to play the piano, except for his left hand. Gets called on to do a performance and he gets up, but Jake gets up with him. He beats rooster to the piano and starts testing the keys and Rooster is confused because he never knew Jake could play. Jake starts playing Piano Man so he could force Rooster to sing the song.
Bob signs himself up for a course learning about planes weeks in advance and forgets that he did until he gets an email reminding him. He reads the email and it mentioned having a partner to complete the course with. He has to find someone willing to go with him and he texts the group chat hoping for someone to be down to go with him. Everyone has some plans except for Hangman who said he'd do it. Bob's not sure about it, but he wants to go so he agrees and they meet up. Turns out Hangman is a big nerd when it comes to planes and they talk about their favorites. At the end of the course they get the chance to fly in the plane and parachute out of it. Hangman encourages Bob to jump and at the end of the day they talk about all the fun they had. Bob realizes that Jake is not as bad as he thought.

MEI i have severe top gun maverick brain rot and all i can think about is reader being the admirals daughter and everyone assumes rooster or hangman is gonna go after her but it turns out she’s been hooking up with bob for AGES and they’re all like ??? how did you do that???? bob gets kinda flustered but readers just like idk he was really nice and he’s really good in bed
"Check it out," Phoenix elbows Bob where the man is engrossed in reading the back of the bar napkins Penny had handed them so that they didn't stain her tables again, "There's Mav's daughter. 'Think she's got that Hawaiian shirt on to seduce Rooster?"
Bob's eyes dart to where you're chatting with Penny, his shoulders stiffening as his friends turn to watch you.
"Nah, Rooster doesn't like orange. But those cowboy boots she's got on are probably for Hangman- didn't he say he'd teach her how to square dance?"
Penny reaches over the bar to tug affectionately at one of your braids and Bob tries to no avail to break the conversation.
"Actually, she's-"
"I'd say she was here to meet Fanboy, but she doesn't date losers," Phoenix's eyes are narrowed dangerously, and she hides a smirk against the rim of her bottle.
"Hey! Hangman's a bigger loser than I am!" He protests, but before the taller man can trap him in a headlock, Penny points towards the dagger squad where they're lounged in a corner of the bar, and your eyes shine as you rush over.
"Bob!" You shriek, throwing your arms around his neck and letting your legs bend when he hoists you off of the ground for a hearty hug. His muscles are well hidden beneath his regulation khakis, but he's built for much heavier loads than you, and he lets you hover a few inches off of the ground while he hugs you.
Your face is buried in his neck but you press a kiss against his cheek, catching the bewildered blinking of the rest of his squadron over his shoulder.
"Oh. I forgot you didn't know." You supply, your feet back on the ground as Bob keeps one arm slung loosely around your waist, "Sorry, we- uh, we've been hooking up for a while, it's just... I haven't seen him since you guys got shipped out."
"You've been hooking up with her?" Coyote stares down his nose at Bob who shifts subtly closer to you, nodding once, stiffly in the face of his teammate's scrutiny.
"Damn. And he was good enough in bed to keep you waiting 'til he got back?"
Bob flushes - you feel his skin warm where it's pressed against your own, and you fill the awkward silence.
"Oh, please. I'm sure you've seen it in the locker room; I'd wait a lifetime."
Bob scoffs over your shoulder, now even more flustered, but Phoenix is happy to save the situation.
"Does your dad know?" She tilts her chin towards you, remembering how viscerally uncomfortable their Captain had been whenever someone had suggested you get together with one of his aviators.
"Of course he knows," You laugh, "He's the one that set us up! 'Said Bob had to get his hands on me before Texas over there tried to Hold 'Em."
Bob wraps an arm protectively over your chest, leaning over your shoulder from behind to return a kiss against your own cheek.
Hangman whistles lowly, shaking his head with a dazed look, "Well, shit. I didn't know the offer to hold 'em was on the table, but-shit!"
Bob's face darkens but Rooster levels the toe of his boot with Hangman's lower thigh, striking him at the back of the knee and subsequently spilling beer over his khakis. Hangman grunts as his knees knock against the beer-sticky floor, but he seems to know he deserved what he'd gotten because he doesn't retaliate.
"We'll wrangle him." Rooster promises, "You two go have fun, Bob you gotta quarter for the jukebox?"
"Yes'sir," Bob nods, tugging you towards a lesser populated area- perfect for slow dancing even if the bar isn't, "Let's make up for lost time, honey."

Aw Honey Honey (18+)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A Jake “Hangman” Seresin one-shot based on the above prompt + “Does he not know that we’re together?” This is unedited and a little corny, but I think it turned out cute! Smut and fluff ahead! 18+ only. If you enjoyed it, please don't keep it to yourself :)
Title: Aw Honey Honey Jake Seresin isn’t sharing his Sugar. WC: 3085
To some people you were the cute girl who worked in the corporate office of community engagement on base at Miramar. To others, you were Lieutenant Commander Jake Seresin’s very serious, long-term girlfriend.
While you weren’t enlisted, you felt spoiled that you had an office on base, but weren’t tethered to quite the same rules and restrictions that your boyfriend, or his group of friends were obligated to abide by. Sure, you didn’t have free reign, but you often used your office as a hideout for your friends and colleagues during the day when they needed a place to relax for a few minutes.
Of course, there was work to do as well. You were in the thick of scheduling sailors and aviators alike to visit classrooms at elementary schools next week for Read Across America Day. Everyone got a class to visit from kindergarten through fifth grade, would read a Dr. Seuss book out loud, and then left a copy for each child to take home. It was one of your favorite days of the year.
“Knock, knock,” looking up from your computer, you saw Dean ‘Hooper’ Lennox, one of the newest aviators to join the elite fighter weapons school – or Top Gun.
“Hi Dean,” you smiled warmly, gesturing to the open seat across from you desk. “How ya doin’?”
“I’m good, how are you?” He asked, forgoing the chair and leaning against your desk.
“Happy it’s Friday,” you replied, leaning back in your chair and crossing one leg over the other, missing the way he glanced at your bare legs.
“Big plans this weekend?” he asked, reaching over flicking this finger across the top of your pen cup.
“I think some friends and I will hit The Hard Deck tonight,” you replied, opening up a desk drawer to pull out a Milky Way, breaking it in half and handing the other over to him. He grinned as he dropped it into his mouth as you enjoyed your treat as well.
“I’m sure we’ll end up there, too,” he added, eyes zeroing in on a thread of caramel on the corner of your mouth. “Maybe I can buy you a drink,” he reached down, running his thumb over your soft skin. You blushed with embarrassment; you must have looked ridiculous with candy on your face.
“Never say no to a free drink,” you laughed.
“Hey there,” you looked around Dean’s body to see Natasha’s head in your doorway.
“Hi Phee,” you grinned, “we’re having a candy break,” you explained.
“Love some sugar, huh Hooper?” Phoenix asked, “I think Rooster’s looking for you,” she added.
“See ya tonight,” Dean smiled, giving you a wink before disappearing from your office. Phoenix dropped into the chair opposite your desk.
“Milky Way or 100 Grand?” You asked, opening up your drawer.
“You know I want the Milky Way,” Phoenix replied with a flat look, opening her hand palm-up. You tossed one her way and she easily caught it, tearing it open. “Hooper visit you often?” She asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Yeah once and a while,” you shrugged.
“He always get right in your space like that?” She followed up.
“I don’t know,” you shrugged.
“I miss candy hour?” Jake asked, standing in the open door way.
“Hi babe,” you greeted, “candy hour is just starting,” you insisted, opening your drawer once again and fishing out a Baby Ruth bar.
“Thanks Sugar,” Jake said, walking over and kissing your cheek gently as he took the treat from you.
“You just missed Hooper,” Phoenix announced, giving her teammate a pointed look.
“Big loss,” Jake commented, not having a particular taste for the newbie.
“Yeah, he was getting some sugar from your Sugar,” Natasha added. You rolled your eyes with a laugh. Jake whipped around to look back at you, taking a bite out of his candy bar.
“Does he not know that we’re together?” He asked, his green eyes looking rather focused.
“Well it’s not like I introduce myself as Jake Seresin’s girlfriend,” you laughed, flipping your laptop back open.
“Well you could,” Jake said as if it was the obvious thing in the world.
“Phee, back me up here,” you said, looking for some female solidarity. Phoenix shrugged, planting her feet back on the ground and standing up.
“I don’t know, I think he wants to fuck you,” Phoenix said, “but I’ve got reports to file, so that’s my cue – see you all tonight.”
“Bye Phee,” you sighed, looking back up at Jake whose gaze had really focused back on you.
“Why does Phoenix think Hooper wants to fuck you?” He asked, crossing his arms over his chest.
“Baby, he came in here to get some candy and asked me if I had any weekend plans,” you said plainly, standing up from your desk, “Phoenix is being ridiculous – besides, what do I care what Dean thinks?” You wound your arms around his waist, resting your chin on his chest. “I’ve got you,” You smiled, pressing a kiss to the underside of his jaw.
Jake gave in, draping his arms down over your shoulders and hugging you against him.
“Is it the weekend yet?” He asked, lacing his hand up into your hair, giving it a gentle tug.
“Tonight will be fun,” you insisted. “But for now, back to work, Hangman,” you laughed, landing an open palm on his ass.
“I’m reporting you,” Jake frowned, leaning down to press a hot kiss to your mouth, “see you at home.” He gave your hair one more little tug before disappearing. Dropping back down to your desk, you glanced at the clock. The workday couldn’t end soon enough.
You beat Jake home that afternoon, immediately changing out of your work clothes and into a pair of Jake’s shorts and a tank top. You were throwing together a cheese quesadilla in the kitchen when you heard the front door open again.
“Sugar?” He called out, “where ya hidin’ baby?” he wandered into the kitchen, already unbuttoning his khaki shirt.
“Hi handsome,” you grinned, greeting him with a kiss. “Want a lil snack?” you asked, brandishing your spatula in the air.
“I got a lil snack right here,” he said, chasing your lips with a kiss.
“What time are we meeting everyone?” You asked, “do we have time for a quick shower?”
“Sugar, you know we always have time for a shower,” Jake grinned.
“Split this with me,” you commanded, transferring the quesadilla to a plate, the cheese gooey and hot. Carefully cutting it in half, Jake gladly let you feed him bite by bite.
“How about we go away next weekend?” Jake said, gladly chowing down on the snack you made.
“Where do you want to go, babe?” You reached up, swiping at the corner of Jake’s mouth with a napkin.
“Go up the coast, stay in Malibu for a couple days,” he said, “get a little tan.”
“I’m in,” you nodded. “Love seeing you in those little euro swim trunks,” you winked. Jake scoffed with a shake of his head, tossing his plate in the sink and taking your last bite.
“You have ten seconds to strip and get in the shower,” he pointed to the bathroom down the hall. When Jake meant business, he meant business, so you skedaddled through the house, losing your shorts and top along the way. He’d grab them anyway, Jake Seresin was an unbearable clean freak.
You’d just stepped into the stream of water when you felt Jake’s hands on your waist, shortly followed by his breath in our ear.
“Hi Sugar,” he whispered, holding back the shower curtain as he stepped in.
“Hi Jake,” you grinned, turning to face him, the hot water beating down on your back.
“You been a good girl today?” He asked, pushing your hair back from your face.
“Always are,” you insisted, giving him those big doe eyes he always loved.
“Don’t like you being sweet to Hooper,” He said, walking you back to press you against the shower wall. The tile was cold and he welcomed your arched gasp, pressing your body against his hips-first.
“Can’t help being nice, babe, it’s my nature,” you reminded, “seem to recall when you enjoyed me being so sweet to you.” You’d met Jake two years ago around this time, when he came barreling into your office about a community event, asking a favor for support, when he stuck around for some homemade caramels.
“Your sugar is just for me,” he said, fingers trailing down your stomach to your sex, swiping two fingers through your wet folds before bringing them up to his mouth. “My favorite,” he complimented. “Let’s see if you’re sweet everywhere.”
Your hands found purchase in his blonde hair as his lips traveled from your lips to your jaw to your neck. Sucking gently, you gasped as his teeth grazed your delicate skin.
It was all you could do to run your hands up and down his sculpted back, water cascascading across his muscles as he traveled around your neck and collarbone.
“Jake,” you whined gently, impatience thick in your throat.
“Come on, honey girl,” he hoisted you up, hands planted firmly on your ass as he forced your legs around his waist. When he slid his cock home, you sighed with relief. “There you are,” he huffed into your ear, “there’s my sweet girl,” he could feel his lungs expand in his chest.
“I gotta shampoo,” you reminded, eyes going cross for a moment as he stroked up into you. “Are you seriously thinking about shampoo right now?” Jake asked.
“No, baby,” you giggled at his affronted tone, but gasped as he doubled his efforts, hitting just the right spot inside of you relentlessly. “Jake,” you moaned.
“That’s better,” he grit out, legs shaking beneath him. He liked to think he was in fairly good shape, but the way your sex clenched around him had Jake second-guessing himself. “God you feel incredible, Sugar,” his brows knit in concentration.
Acclimated to the temperature of the tile against your back, you returned your hands to his hair, soothing the lines of his forehead from pure concentration.
“Fucking me so good,” you encouraged, head tilting back against the wall. “Always fuck me so good,” your hand gripped the back of Jake’s neck, fingertips stroking the fine hair there.
“Come on baby, give me that sugar,” he grunted, fingers returning to your clit, making you jump. Jake knew your body better than you, and he could tell, as your right heel dug into his lower back, that you were close. He pressed his forehead into your neck as he came, hips stuttering erratically, mindful to fuck you through his orgasm. With shaking hands, he swirled around your clit just right, shouting as you came, squeezing him in a way that caused black spots in his vision.
Jake, on unsteady legs, gently set you down, the shower filled with billows of steam.
Lazily looping your arms around his neck, he kissed you slowly, savoring the taste of your mouth.
“Lemme shampoo you,” you whispered, making him honk out a loud laugh.
“I swear you love your shampoo more than me,” He said, pressing a firm kiss to your lips.
“Baby, not more than you,” you murmured, “just as much.” A loud squeal ripped from your mouth as he slapped your ass.
Twenty minutes later, you were throwing a summery strapless maxi dress on, tying your hair back into a low bun.
“Babe?” You called for Jake, who was grabbing fresh clothes from the laundry room. He dutifully stepped into the bedroom, taking your necklace and clasping it around your neck wordlessly – a habit he was all too accustomed to. Appearing in the bathroom mirror, you frowned as you saw how red and splotchy your skin was from Jake’s ministrations, but applied minimal makeup nonetheless.
“Your boobs look good,” he commented, stepping behind you, hands cupping your breasts over your dress.
“Jake,” you laughed, “get out of the way or I’m going to get perfume on you,” you warned. He gave your breasts a quick squeeze before heading down the hall.
You still had twenty minutes or so until you needed to leave, so you’d grabbed the mail and sorted through a few items before picking up the living room and packing your purse for the night.
Jake busied himself in the office before Coyote text him that they were leaving quarters to hit the bar.
“Sugar, time to leave,” he instructed, pulling you from your pile of newspaper coupons. He held your hand as you stepped into your shoes, bringing you a little closer to his height.
You rode alongside him in he car, leaning into his side with an arm over your shoulder. You were grateful for the weekend and the chance to unwind. Planning for the reading event had taken a lot out of you this week and you were ready for the chance to decompress.
Upon arriving at The Hard Deck, Jake grasped your hand, leading you inside. It was already packed for the night, Fridays being the most popular time, and Jake spotted Coyote over near one end of the bar with Harvard and Fritz.
“Oh, there’s Tasha – I’ll meet you,” you assured, rocking up to your toes to peck Jake’s lips. “Buy me a beer?” You asked, already crossing the bar. Jake shook his head with a smile, knowing he’d get you anything you asked for.
“What the hell happened to you?” Natasha asked as a greeting. You looked back over you shoulder, wondering if she was talking to you.
“What?” You asked, brows furrowed, “me?”
“You look like you got fucking mauled,” she laughed sardonically, eyeing you up. Looking down, you could see the faintest yellow mark just below your collarbone. Grabbing Natasha’s phone, you flipped the camera to selfie-mode. Over the last half an hour, your red splotches had developed into yellow-green bruises all of your neck and collarbone. “What the fuck?” you laughed, rolling your eyes, “Jake.” You supplied as an answer. “It’s your fault actually,” you said pointedly, angling your body away from the bar.
“My fault?” Natasha asked, eyes wide.
“Yes! Jake got all in my business after you told him Hooper wants to fuck me,” you gave her a meaningful look.
“Well Hooper does want to fuck you,” she said plainly. “Here,” she grabbed her jean jacket off the high top next to her. “This will piss Jake off,” she grinned.
“I don’t really care what he thinks, I just look ridiculous,” you shrugged it on – letting it rest on your shoulders without looping your arms through the sleeves.
You and Natasha caught up for a bit longer, you leaning an elbow against the countertop.
After a good fifteen minutes, you noticed Hooper approaching from over Natasha’s shoulder, and you stood a little straighter.
“No drink in your hand?” He asked with a wide smile.
“Oh, her friend is getting her one,” Natasha smiled knowingly.
“Sure I can’t buy you one? I did offer,” he said, giving her a smile like butter wouldn’t melt. Maybe he was flirting with her after all.
“You’re sweet, but I’m all set,” you reassured.
“Can’t wait for the Read Across America event next week,” he said excitedly, a genuine smile reflecting in those blue eyes. You weren’t blind – Hooper was an attractive man - ocean eyes, fluffy dark brown hair and a chin cleft that harkened back to old Hollywood. He just wasn’t your Jake.
“Yeah, you been practicing your ABCs?” Natasha asked snarkily. You tossed her a look that screamed be nice!
“I’m glad! Not everyone jumps at the chance to entertain a class of 20 six-year olds,” you smiled.
“I’ve got a big family, lots of siblings – I also volunteer as Big Brother out of the San Diego chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters,” he elaborated, watching the smile on your face grow.
“Yeah, you read to orphans, too?” Natasha asked, sipping her beer. You caught her eye, just to see her expression change and a feline grin take over her face.
“Hi there,” you could spot Jake’s voice anywhere. “Brought your favorite,” he said, setting a summer shandy down on the counter next to your elbow.
“Thanks Jake,” you smiled. “Dean was just telling us about how he volunteers at Big Brothers Big Sisters, isn’t that just the sweetest?” You asked, looking up and over your shoulder at him.
“The sweetest,” Jake grinned that cocky smirk that made you wonder what he was going to do next. “Sugar are you not sweatin’ in here with that jacket on?” He asked, gingerly taking the shoulder seams in his hands and dragging it off of your body, folding it in half and tossing it over the same chair it originally laid across.
There was no missing Hooper’s expression as he eyed up the gallery of color across your neck and décolletage.
“Yeah, I um –” He watched, clearing his throat as Jake snaked his arms around your waist from behind, dropping a kiss down on your bare shoulder. “Started back at my old chapter in Kansas City, but transferred here… when I moved.” He finished lamely.
“That’s so kind of you, I wish I could do more philanthropically, but I get to fill that cup through work, so it’s a big bonus,” you smiled, Jake’s body pressed so tightly up against your back, there wasn’t room for even a piece of paper to slip between you. Natasha’s grin was downright wicked from behind the rim of her glass, the glint in her eyes absolutely entertained.
“She’s a real sweet girl,” Jake commented. “Sugar sweet,” he finished, squeezing your waist in hand.
“I think Tanker and Mad Dog are starting up a game of pool,” he said, eyes darting all around – “I’ll see you guys later, have a great night.” He practically left a cloud of smoke in his wake.
“Jacob Seresin,” you scolded, turning in your boyfriend’s grip. Natasha burst into laughter.
“Yes?” He asked, tipping his chin up to look down at you, that same cocky smirk on his face.
“You’re unbelievable you know that?” You asked.
“Better believe it,” he grinned.
“And what is all this?” You gestured to your colorful skin.
“I think it turned out quite well, wouldn’t you agree, Phoenix?” He asked.
“You’re a real piece of work, Bagman,” she shook her head, but smiled nonetheless.
“What am I going to do with you, huh?” You asked, leaning forward.
“You can start by giving me some sugar.”
Thanks for reading! If you enjoyed Aw Honey Honey, you might also like Mighty Fine!

I wrote this for my Love Is In the Air playlist! Check my masterlist for more!
Tumblr media
It started out with a simple note.
I like your glasses.
Bob held the note card in his hand and glanced around the deck of the aircraft carrier as discreetly as he could. There were people everywhere. Anyone could have left this for him to find on his seat inside the cockpit of the F/A-18 that he shared with Phoenix.
I like your glasses.
Bob didn't even like his own glasses. There was nothing to like about them. They made him look even more awkward than he already felt, and he couldn't wear anything else, or he wouldn't be allowed to be in the Super Hornet at all.
So he scrutinized the handwriting, but it didn't look familiar. And that's when it dawned on him. Phoenix and Hangman were just messing with him. They did this from time to time. One time they covered his car in post-it notes. Another time they hid his helmet bag from him.
He rolled his eyes and scrunched the note up in his fist. Bob was completely unremarkable. Nobody would ever leave him this kind of note. Nat and Jake should have known he wouldn't fall for it this time.
----------------------------
Bob found a second note a few days later.
Your smile is nice. I wish you would smile at me.
He sighed and tilted his face up to the heavens. Great. Now he was going to have to call Nat and Jake out on their little pranks. He could feel his cheeks flushing pink this time. It was so embarrassing that his teammates thought it would be funny to do this to him. Nat knew how shy he was, and how he wished he could find a girl to date.
Bob glanced around again. There were a few women on deck at the moment. None that looked like they would be remotely interested in him. They were all either too old or too attractive. And who would have access to his cockpit seat anyway?
It wasn't a good idea to get his hopes up when he just knew who was behind this.
"What's wrong with you?" Nat asked as she climbed her ladder. "I already apologized for eating your croissant! I didn't know you were saving it for later!"
Bob shook his head. "This isn't about the croissant, Phoenix. But I wish you and Hangman would stop picking on me."
"Huh?" she asked before boosting herself into the seat in front of him.
But it was time to get to work, so Bob crumpled up this note as well and tossed it into his helmet bag. "We can talk about it later," he mumbled as he started his preflight safety routine.
---------------------------
Now things were getting out of hand.
You look handsome in your flight suit. Tall and strong.
Bob took another close look at the handwriting. It looked fancy and feminine, but nothing like Nat's. He supposed Jake would be able to imitate something like this if he really tried.
"Hey, Hangman," Bob called to him.
Jake turned and shrugged at him from the top of his own ladder. "Yeah?"
"Can you just knock it off?" Bob asked, waving the note card in the air.
Jake squinted like he was trying to see what Bob was holding. "What are you talking about, Bob?"
"The notes!"
But it was too late, because now all of the conversation was being drowned out by the deck speaker system. The final mission announcements were being made as Phoenix got settled into her set.
Bob would have to talk to them both later.
----------------------------
"I know I'm an easy target, and I know I don't usually get annoyed, but please. Please, just stop."
Jake and Nat both looked at him from across the table as they ate their dinners later that night.
"Stop what exactly?" Jake asked. "Is this what you were trying to tell me earlier?"
Bob's cheeks flushed. He couldn't believe they were going to make him spell it out like this.
"The notes, guys," he said, pulling the newest note card out of the pocket of his flight suit and sliding it across the table. "It's not funny."
Jake and Nat both leaned closer to read what was written there, pretending they had never seen it before.
"You have a secret admirer?" Nat asked, her eyes darting up to meet Bob's.
Jake grinned. "Someone has a crush on you."
Bob took the note and crumpled it up. "I know it's you two, so can you please stop!"
Nat and Jake looked at each other.
"Did you write it?" she asked, and Jake shook his head.
"Did you?" he asked, and she shook her head no as well.
Bob didn't think he should believe them, but he really, really wanted to. Just the idea of someone thinking about him in that way made him want to smile.
"It's not us," Nat said with a grin. "But we'll help you figure out who it is."
-----------------------------
Bob didn't want to get his hopes up. But when he thought about who might have access to his cockpit, he immediately thought about the mechanical crew. And when he thought about the mechanical crew, he thought about you.
He had seen you out on deck the other day, but you were so beautiful. Way too gorgeous to be leaving the notes. Just the prettiest smile. Sometimes you said hi to him, and he'd get so flustered, he could barely respond.
It was too unlikely though. And he wasn't even sure if it was a woman leaving the notes.
"I have an idea!" Nat said as she checked the air pressure in the tires. "Why don't you leave a note?"
Bob thought about it for a second. "I guess I could do that."
So he left a note on his seat asking who you were.
And the next time he climbed the ladder, there was another note card waiting for him.
I'm too shy to tell you who I am. But I work closely with your jet. And I have a crush on you.
Bob's heart was pounding. There was nobody on the tarmac at the moment, so he showed the note to Nat.
"The plot thickens!" she said as she read it. "I wonder if it could be her."
Bob looked in the direction that she had nodded, and there you were. You had your hair pulled back away from your face, and you were wearing your typical jumpsuit. And you were smiling, your eyes catching Bob's for a split second.
"Nat. Come on. She's so pretty.
Phoenix just laughed at him. "You're a catch, Bobby! Even if it's not her, you can still ask her out."
But he just shook his head and muttered, "No, I couldn't."
--------------------------
Bob got two more notes the following week.
Your accent sounds cute. Where are you from?
This person has heard him speak before.
Bob had only ever been complimented on his accent when Jake had as well. Everyone loved Hangman's Texan drawl, and only mentioned Bob as an afterthought. But when he wrote a note telling you he was from Montana, and asking you as politely as he could if you were a woman, Bob got another note in response.
I've never been to Montana. Yes, I am a woman. You sound smart and organized in the air.
If it wasn't for the fact that this woman had mentioned his glasses, Bob would have been convinced these notes were meant for Jake.
And now Bob was facing a different problem: the aircraft carrier would be arriving back in San Diego in a few days. His missions were finished. He didn't have much reason to climb up into his cockpit now, and he still didn't know who the notes were from.
In a final effort to try to bring his admirer out of the shadows, Bob wrote one final note and bypassed all of the mechanics to leave it on his seat.
When we dock in port, would you like to meet in person? Near the Admiral Kazansky memorial statue? I'll wait there as soon as I get off the carrier. I hope you'll be there too.
On his way back across the deck, he saw you dressed in your jumpsuit, and you smiled and waved at him. Maybe Nat was right; he could still ask you out no matter what, even if you weren't the one leaving the notes for him to find.
But he felt a connection with the note writer. She seemed to like him as he was. He never had to show off or pretend he was confident like Jake for her to notice him. So he would wait, and hopefully in two short days, there would be someone meeting him at the statue.
-----------------------
Bob was starting to sweat through his khaki uniform, and it wasn't even that hot outside.
"Are you sure I look okay?" he asked Phoenix, and she continued to make a fuss over him.
"You look so good," she promised, combing her fingers through his already tidy hair and readjusting his glasses. "Here, open up." She popped a mint into his mouth, and Bob rolled his eyes.
"I highly doubt I'll be kissing anyone, Phoenix."
"You never know, Bobby. I'm still holding out hope that the cute mechanic is your note writing secret admirer."
Bob let Phoenix lead him down the ramps when their deboarding group was called. He was so nervous now, he just wanted to go right home and pretend none of this had ever happened.
"Go find your girl! Text me later!" Nat told him, pushing him in the direction of the statue.
Bob wound his way slowly through the crowd. His heart was pounding. What if nobody was there? What if nobody came? What if it was just Jake waiting for him after all?  He felt sick, with clammy palms and an upset stomach as he neared his destination.
"Bob?" a soft voice called to him, and his eyes drifted up a uniformed body, his eyes coming to settle on your face.
"It's you? The pretty mechanic?" he asked, and when a smile found its way to your lips, you nodded.
"Yeah. It's me. Are you disappointed?" you asked, twisting your fingers around each other and shifting your weight from one booted foot to the other.
"D-Disappointed?" Bob asked, setting his duffel bag down next to yours. "No. I was hoping it was you. I still can't believe you noticed me."
You giggled, a cute, surprised expression on your face. "Bob, you were the most noticeable guy onboard!"
Bob inched closer to you, but you didn't back away. You actually stepped right into his personal space and ran your palms up to his shoulders and kissed him softly. Desire bloomed through his body, and as you pulled away from him, Bob leaned down for another kiss. His glasses bumped your cheek, but you didn't seem to mind as you kissed him over and over, until he felt a little dizzy.
His glasses were askew, but he could clearly see the gentle flutter of your lashes as you opened your eyes and gazed up at him.
"Do you want to go grab lunch with me?" you asked, your expression so open and your face so pretty. "I want to hear all about Montana in your sexy voice."
"Yes, of course." Bob blushed and fixed his glasses, but he scooped up both duffel bags and followed you along the dock, listening to you gush about how strong he was.
The last thing Bob heard as he disappeared into the crowd with you was Jake wolf whistling and Nat yelling, "Go Bobby!"

A Jake Seresin Hockey AU || masterlist
Tumblr media
Press release from the North Island Daggers:
“Monday,
Jake Seresin will not travel with the team to Edmonton for the away game series against the Edmonton Oilers. The North Island Daggers Association declines any further comments.”
--- --- ---
Transcript from the Paul Marquez Report on ESPN:
Paul Marquez: “The North Island Daggers, quite possibly the worst team in the league who is surprisingly having their best season in franchise history. . . have benched their star player, Jake “Hangman” Seresin. This could be the biggest mistake this team has made in a long time. The association posted their comment on their various social media accounts, and then declined to make any further comment. Coach Beau Simpson did his pre-game press conference and of course was bombarded with questions about the decision to bench Seresin when they are headed into a tough few weeks of away games. Sitting with me in the studio as always, Marcus Kirby and Denny Lester, let’s hear from you guys on this choice.”
Marcus: “This is the dumbest decision the Daggers have ever made. This kid is amazing. He is the best in the league, probably going to be the best in history. He is this generation’s Rus Hamilton. He is breaking records left and right. He is the reason why the Daggers are finally looking like they could win the Cup this year. This decision to bench him when you’re about to go on a 5-game series against the other best team in the league? This is like choosing to fly Spirit Airlines instead of Emirates. Sure, the kid is a hot head but isn’t that why we-”
Denny: “Isn’t that why we watch Hockey? To watch players pummel each other? Maybe some do, but I watch Hockey because I enjoy the sport. Holloway makes me enjoy watching the sport. Bradshaw makes me enjoy watching the sport. Seresin? Makes me want to watch golf. The dude needs an attitude check. He thinks he walks on water and the sun shines out of his ass. He’s not this generation's Hamilton, and it's insulting that you compared the two. I’ve seen better footwork and stickhandling down on the farm teams. He’s got one hell of a temper-”
Marcus: “He’s a goon! That’s why!”
Denny: “He can be a goon all he wants, but you don’t drop the gloves and go after your own teammate. We all saw the way he went after Holloway last week during the game with the Devils. For fucks sake, the other team got involved to pull Seresin off of him. The call to bench Seresin is a good one, and I approve of it.”
Marcus: “Man, you’ve been a Seresin hater since he went overall one in the draft. What will make you stop drinking the haterade.”
Denny: “Maybe if he can grow up and pay attention to the sport he’s getting paid millions to play and less on the off-screen conquests and the fights.”

Multi colored lights adorn the beams of the ceiling. Metallic streamers hang from the bar. Music is blasting from the jukebox. The Hard Deck almost looks unrecognisable.
It's New Years Eve, and The Squad have agreed to spend it together. Hangman, Coyote and Payback are at the dart board, allowing Jake to show off his talent. Bob, Rooster and Fanboy are convened by the pool table, taking turns to shoot, unbothered by who's meant to be sinking what. You and Natasha are standing by the bar, waiting for Penny to serve you when she gets the chance.
"So, come on, who are you kissing at midnight?" Natasha looks at you with a glint in her eye. Mischievous girl.
"Yeah. Right. You, if you're not careful," you warn her, teasing lilt in your voice. Honestly, you don't think she'd be the worst choice in the world.
"As much as I'd love that, I don't think the squad could handle it," she winks at you cheekily. "Seriously, who?"
"I don't know!" you laugh. But that's a lie. You do know. At least, you know who you'd like to kiss.
Jake Seresin. Hangman. America's Sweetheart.
Pilot, Texan, Heartbreaker.
Your friend, your teammate, the man you've been in love with since you met him that first day of basic training.
The two of you were partnered for the first few exercises that day, and you beat every other pair by a mile. You both figured out pretty quickly that you make a damn good team.
That hasn't changed. If ever you have to pair up for an exercise, a mission, or just a class, Jake's eyes find yours immediately. A silent question. Shall we? And your answer, always - of course.
You seem to have your own language, this shared communication. You don't have to speak to know what the other person is saying. On the ground, or in the air, you know each other's next moves. Predictable, but comfortable.
Maybe that's the problem.
You believe strongly that women are more than capable of making the first move. You've thought about grabbing Jake and kissing him stupid more times than you can count. But you don't. Every time there's an opportunity, you brush past it, let it go. Because the comfort isn't worth sacrificing. At least, that's what you're telling yourself.
Your friendship with Jake has been built on years of trust, empathy, and reliance. You know that no matter what, he'll have your back. He's demonstrated it more than once. Countless times. Showing up for you, without fail. When you were harassed by a man at the Hard Deck, Jake showed up. When you had a family member's funeral and didn't want to go alone, Jake showed up. When you broke your wrist and ended up in the hospital, Jake showed up. He was your North Star. Always there, always guiding. Always comforting.
So you can't help but repeatedly ask yourself - why hasn't he made a move? You're convinced you know the answer to that question, though. Because you're friends. He sees you as a friend. A teammate. Which you wouldn't change for the world, not by any means. But it doesn't stop you from wishing that maybe, just maybe, he wouldn't hold his cards so close to his chest. Just for a minute.
The Devil Himself sidles over to the two of you, still at the bar, and throws an arm over each of you. Natasha manages to wiggle under and away from him, but you stay put. You don't mind.
"Hey pretty ladies," he beams, "whatcha whispering about?"
"It's kind of impossible to whisper when you keep queueing Duran Duran on the jukebox at full volume, Hangman," Natasha barks back.
He laughs, a real, full bodied laugh that shakes both him and you, still with his arm slung over your shoulder. You laugh with him. It's impossible not to. His laugh is contagious, you think. Unavoidable. He laughs, you laugh. That's the way it's always been.
It's at this moment that Bob pushes his way through the crowd, grabbing Natasha by the hand.
"Phoenix, I need you. Fanboy doesn't believe you can do that pool trick you showed me last week. Come and prove him wrong!"
She grins at you, and allows herself to be pulled into the swarms of people, on her way to earn some respect.
You turn back to Jake at the bar, and see that he's ordered a beer, and your usual. Observant boy.
You take a sip of your drink, only for a drop to miss your mouth entirely. Maybe it's the alcohol, or maybe it's just his impatience, but Jake decides he's tired of waiting. He leans in to you, and slowly, deliberately, follows the journey of the drop with his tongue, from the bottom of your neck up to your jaw. He pulls back, and watches you with that gaze of his. Measured, careful. Adoring. Mischievous. Just so Jake.
You feel the heat rise from your chest and up to your cheeks, but you don't break eye contact with him. It feels like a confession. You're baring your truth to him, silently, and he's understanding. That shared language. You're both saying so much, without saying anything at all.
It's then that you realise where you are. The Hard Deck has somehow become even more crowded, and you keep being bumped left and right by people attempting to get to the bar. The music is too loud, the lights are too bright. You need a minute. As if he can read your mind, Jake speaks.
"Let's get some air. It's hot in here."
He grabs your hand, interlacing your fingers with his, and leads you out of the door, onto the deck outside.
The cool night air hits you both, and you sigh with relief. You allow the breeze to flow through your hair, to ripple your dress, to cleanse you of your worry.
Jake's still holding your hand. Tighter, now. As if he's scared you'll blow away. Or run away, maybe.
You lean into him slightly, and rest your head against his arm. He's warm, soft. He smells like Jake. Like love. Like home.
"You okay?" he asks. Always so worried about you. Attentive boy.
"I'm good. Just a little overwhelmed, I guess."
He starts to rub circles over the back of your hand with his thumb, grounding you. It's all so intimate, you don't know whether to pull him closer or sprint in the other direction.
He makes the decision for you - closer. He kisses your hair, and then rests his head atop of yours. You can hear the squad laughing and cheering inside, all of them completely unaware that out on the deck, two of their teammates are baring their souls to each other.
You have no idea whether it's been two minutes or two hours when Jake speaks again.
"You're the prettiest girl in that bar, you know." Then, he says, a bit quieter, "You're always the prettiest girl in the room."
He says it so sincerely, so earnestly, that you want to rip your heart out of your chest and place it in his hands. You want to give it to him so that maybe he'll finally understand - it's already his.
You don't know what to say, so you bring your interlaced hands up to your lips, and kiss each of his knuckles individually. He's so warm, so golden. Radiating light wherever he goes. Your North Star.
You both listen to the gentle crash of the ocean waves, sitting with the weight of the moment. It feels like with every second that passes, silent revelations are being made. As if the love, the feelings, the comfort, are passing through your hands and into his. You're quite convinced that you could stay right where you are forever.
Bury me like this, you think. Immortalise us here.
All of a sudden, the sound of a countdown breaks through your solitude.
Ten. Nine.
You smile gently, and look at Jake, to see him gazing down at you. Stars in his eyes. Cosmic boy.
Eight. Seven.
He glances inside, to see the squad all gathered together, arms around one another. His family.
Six. Five.
Jake turns to you, and cups your face in both of his hands. Those hands that have picked you up from the ground. Those hands that have wiped your tears. Those hands, so strong, but so gentle. That's him all over, though. Your gentle boy.
Four. Three.
He looks at you with promise in his eyes. You can understand, clear as day, what he's telling you. Life will never be the same, from this day forward. Neither of you can wait.
Two. One.
Jake leans in, and presses his lips to yours. He tastes like spearmint, and the future. One of his hands travels to the back of your neck, to pull you in closer. Now that he has you this near, he knows he's never going to be able to let you go.
Bodies pressed together as close as can be, you kiss him with so much love, you're surprised he hasn't fallen over. He's breathing you in, trying to commit this moment to memory. He knows he'll tell your grandkids about this. Hell, he'll tell any damn person that'll listen.
"Happy New Year, sweetheart," he murmurs against your lips.
"Happy New Year, lover," you whisper back against his.
Bright beams of light appear above your head suddenly. Explosions of color dance across the sky, illuminating Jake's face. You look at him, and feel the urge to burst into tears. He's not watching the fireworks. He's watching you. He's gazing at you like you hung the moon. You're looking at him like he's the North Star, guiding you home. And that's exactly where you are. Home.

I feel so bad for Iris but I want to see her kind of like? admit to Hangman she’s down bad.
I.R.I.S Masterlist
Warnings: Smut!! But a whole lot of tension! Jake Seresin x F!reader. Also: read this little concept from yesterday too.
***~***~***~***~***~***~***~***~***~***~****~****
Oh. I like this. I like this a lot because maybe, just maybe we start to see Iris show some vulnerability. And maybe, just MAYBE, she shows Jake that she isn’t just in this for the sex after all. Perhaps there’s something a little deeper?
***~***~***~***~***~***~***~
“Iris, get him off me!” P:E shouted through the comms as you steadied back. You weren’t showing much interest and Coyote could very much tell. He’d been briefed on the situation at hand, the one where you weren’t to be given points based on performance alone anymore. It had pretty much taken you out of the running, but no one beside Jake knew that you knew.
“You look fine to me Lieutenant Baileys, I’m gonna swing around—“
“Are you fucking kidding me! He’s right on my tail!” It was true, Coyote was—you just didn’t give enough of a shit to help as you left P:E to be gunned down. “Fuck!”
“That’s a kill—“ Coyote confirmed as the tone signal rang out through P:E’s cockpit. “Better luck next time kid.” Coyote smirked, he knew P:E was lacking in certain skills, his dogfighting skills were just one of the long long list—but Coyote also knew if you’d been there, perhaps P:E could’ve lived a little longer through the exercise.
“Well if you hadn’t paired me with Iris I’d still be alive!” P:E groaned as he made his way back around to land. “You’d think you’d wanna be a little more of a team player there Iris.”
“You’d be dead anyway dickhead, you suck ass.” You added, not in the mood to just take the slander Gregg Baileys threw at you.
“Damn, does that attitude of yours come in mens?” P:E chuckled as you came up beside him, flipping him off. “I could use me some—“
“I think you cum in men enough for all of us P:E.” You ended the conversation there as you flew off to the left, coming in to land shortly after. Jake was waiting for you as you taxied down and eventually came to a halt. You tried your best to pretend he wasn’t there, but as you went to walk off he just followed.
“That was idiotic behaviour Iris—“ Jake mumbled as he followed every step you took. “A blatant disregard for your fellow teammate doesn’t bode well in your favor.”
“Thankyou for your feedback Lieutenant Commander Seresin I’ll be sure to log it away with everyone else’s opinions I didn’t ask for—“ Things were tense ever since the fight you’d had. You knew where you stood with Jake now. He didn’t want to fuck around with you, he didn’t want anything to do with you, he didn’t wanna get involved at the risk of his own career, he didn’t wanna get involved with Pete Mitchell’s daughter. You got it, you understood—but just because you understood didn’t mean it didn’t sting, especially knowing that every second you spend in the TopGun program was a waste of your time. You didn’t come here to be a part of the herd. You wanted the glory of being the best. “Get off my dick, you’re the one who didn’t want fuck all to do with me, so stop pretending you care and let me handle this the way I feel like I should.”
“Lieutenant Mitchell!” Jake hissed and you halted your steps. “I don’t appreciate your attitude and I’m sure none of your colleagues do either.” Jake spat as you turned to face him, completely and utterly seething as you held your helmet under your arm and against your hip. “Coyote is yet to grade you, but I’m sure it will only reflect the performance you just gave.”
“Oh good then, at least I know I’d get the same shit grading regardless if I’d tried any harder or even better, not flown at all.” You replied. “Am I dismissed, Sir? I’ve got better things to be doing than standing here wasting my time defending my actions.” When Jake didn’t immediately answer, you turned on your heels, you’d decided his silence was as good as being dismissed.
“No! No you’re not—“ Jake was pissed, he was pissed because although he said he didn’t want to continue whatever the fuck you guys were doing, he still cared enough about you to want to remain friends. You weren’t interested in that concept by the looks of things and fuck did that piss Jake right off. “See me in Admiral Simpson's office.”
“Jake!” Your eyes grew wide with shock as you turned back around, closing a little of the gap you’d made as you took strides towards him. “Are you serious!?”
“I'm serious, you don’t get to act this way, there’s a difference between being a brat in bed and being completely insubordinate to a superior officer.” Jake held his ground as you looked at him completely stunned. There was hurt evident in your eyes as you just remained silent and quiet and all things Jake knew you not to be. “Admiral's office, now.”
“How could you do this?” You asked softly, completely gutted that Jake would do this. Especially after everything that went down in your dads office. Was treating you like a career killer not enough for him? He just had to make sure you knew he had the power to end yours too? An eye for an eye? Was that it?
“Easily.” Jake lied. He hated the way you looked at him with such anger, such hate. But he had to put you down a peg before you flew too close to the sun. “It’s my job, Lieutenant Mitchell.”
***~***~***~***~***~
It’s later that night when all has been said and all has been done that Jake hears a knock on his door. He’s sure everyones at the Hard Deck, he’d been invited but after having dragged you into Admiral Simpson's office for disciplinary actions, he wasn’t feeling all that up to it.
But when Jake opened his door to see you standing there? Looking all kinds of beautiful and angry? He was speechless.
“Iris?”
“Permission to speak freely sir?” You asked permission through gritted teeth as Jake crossed his arms over his chest and frowned, why the fuck were you on his doorstep.
“Yeah, I guess?” It didn’t take you more than three seconds to smash your fist against Jake's cheek. Rattling his brain as he stumbled back into his own home groaning from the sudden connection. “Oh my god! WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM!” Jake shouted as he doubled over, pain radiated through his jaw as you stepped inside, shaking your fist.
“YOU!” You replied harshly. “You got me a goddamn write up!” You couldn’t help but to hiss venom Jake's way, shoving at his shoulders as he stood up. “You couldn’t let it go? You couldn’t let me be angry and upset that nothing I ever do is good enough or will be good enough because of who my damn dad is!” You shouted, clearly distraught, Jake just stood there and took the brunt of your anger. “I’m not good enough for the Navy, I’m not good enough for TopGun, I’m not good enough at anything and most importantly—“ You paused, took a deep breath as you tried to swing another hook Jakes way. He caught your fist though, mid swing and just held it in the air. Eyeing you off with gritted teeth and angry eyes. “I’m not good enough for you!”
“What are you talking about?” Jake asked as he frowned with confusion laced in his tone. “Iris? The fuck are you even talking about right now?”
“I’m the one who can’t look at myself in the mirror because I’m obsessed with someone I’ll never have.” Your voice dropped from something of anger to something of sadness as Jake lowered your fist. “I caught feelings and it’s my own fault and we should never have started this Jake because I can’t stop thinking about you—“ Jake smiled for a brief moment, damn. He’d fallen for the one person that was so unattainable it wasn’t funny. Pete Mitchell’s daughter. And you’d fallen for Jake Seresin, your stupid TopGun instructor. “I can’t stop thinking about you and it’s driving me crazy because I said this wasn’t personal, it was just something sexy and secretive and a fucking fling but I—“ Jake cut you off when he stepped closer and pressed his lips against yours, ducking down to scoop you up and wrap your legs around his waist. You moved in tandem with him, allowing him to pick you up with ease as you complied.
“You drive me insane you know that?” Jake growled as he pressed you up against the nearest wall he could find. “You’re reckless and irresponsible and naive and have an attitude problem that is far beyond anything I’ve ever seen.” Jake listed off all the things he hated to love about you as he ducked his head to suck at the pulse point on your supple neck. “But If I ever see you flunk out in a training session on purpose again I’ll discipline you myself because you need to show these guys just who they’re fucking with.”
“How would you discipline me?” You challenged Jake, you didn’t wanna talk about what was going on. You wanted a distraction. “Jake? How would you discipline me?” Jake pushed off the wall he’d had you pressed against as he kissed you again, his time more passionately and with more tongue.
“I’d keep you on the edge, I’d fuck you dumb just how I know you like it but I’ve never let you cum, I’d keep you begging and whining and babbling my name and by the time I’d be finished with you? it’ll be the only thing you’d remember, my name.” Jake teased as he padded down the hall to his room, he was hard as rock by the time he got you in his bed, splayed out and naked just for him.
The stupid H_ngm_n white graphic T he’d been wearing now long forgotten, same with your plain white one. Nearly identical if not for the black stitching.
Watching on with lustful eyes as you played with yourself, dancing your delicate fingers across your sensitive bundle of nerves as Jake pumped his fist up and down his cock, spreading the pre cum his tip had oozed. “Fuck—you look so fucking hot.”
“When Cyclone was screaming at me for being insubordinate all I could think about was fucking you on his desk.” You admitted as Jake came down slowly to kneel on his bed, his eyes never leaving the way you played with yourself. “Or fucking myself on his desk while you watch, either way I got fucked in my fantasy.”
“Your about to get fucked in reality too.” Jake smirked as he came down to suck harshly at your nipples, swirling his tongue over your hardened buds as you arched your back into his chest.
“Fuck—“ Your moans echoed off the walls of Jakes bedroom. “Jake!”
“Ready for me?”
“Shut up and fuck me already—“ So with that, Jake did. He fucked you hard into his mattress, moaning and groaning in your ear as he did so.
“Augh—fuck Iris yes!” It felt amazing, Jake set a pace that mimicked that of perfection as he drove himself inside you, flicking his hip back with force every time just to hit the right stop that sent stars flying over your head. “Fuck I love fucking your perfect pussy baby.”
“Harder!” You begged and Jake obliged. He wrapped your legs around his waist as he pulled back, grabbed your hips and fucked deep into you. Watching with lustful eyes as your tits bounced and your screams echoed. “Yes! Oohhhh fuck yes!! Yes Jake! Feels so fucking good.”
Nothing felt better than when Jake had flipped you over though. There was just something about the angel he could get, how deep he could drive himself from behind as he gripped your ass in his hands to move you up and down his length. Watching as you curve your spine to rest your cheek down on the mattress and keep your ass high. All for him.
“Oh god oh god oh god oh god—“ It was like a mantra of whimpers escaping from Jake’s mouth as he used your cunt to get himself off. “Ohhh fucking christ send me to hell.” The devil truly had a hand on his shoulder. “Fuck you’re perfect Y/n, so fucking perfect.” Jake's compliment made you forget how to breathe, it was like nothing you’d felt before.
“So close!” You cried out, reaching up to pay attention to your aching bundle of nerves that needed to feel its release, it’s high. “I need to come Jake please make me cum baby—feels so fucking good!”
It was at that moment Jake paused his pace, pulled out of you which left you aching for more, only to lay down on his back and led you up to straddle his waist. Sinking you down, slowly and ever so carefully.
“You wanna cum? Make yourself cum Iris, use me.” Which you did. You used Jake Seresin to get yourself off as you rode him senseless.
“Oh my god yes yes yes, feels so fucking good!” You moaned as your hands pressed into Jake's chest as you slicked his cock up and down with your velvet walls. “Fuck Jake I’m gonna cum!”
“Look at me when you cum Iris.” Jake begged as he dug his nails into your hips, holding on for dear life as he felt his own high approaching. “I’m gonna cum in the pretty and tight pussy of yours—“ Your reply sent Jake into the stratosphere, it had him coming in milliseconds as you followed him seconds after.
“Flood me daddy—“
“Oh fuck, yes Iris, fuck fuck FUCK--!”
“Ohhh I’m cumming I’m cumming I’m cumming I’m cumming ahhhh—!” It was euphoric as you came down from your highs together, lying in a sweaty mess in the middle of Jake's bed. Lying in the aftermath of bad decisions and false hope.
“Stay with me? Just for a little while?” Jake asked softly as he kissed your temple and pulled you close. “We can pretend that whatever this is could actually be normal for a little while, that you’re just some girl I met at some bar and I’m just some guy who gets to love you without consequence.” You didn’t immediately respond, but eventually? You agreed.
“I’ll stay for a little while.” You replied, your eyelids grew heavier with every second Jake laid drawing unidentifiable objects into your naked back with his fingers. Loving that you fell asleep on his chest, listening to the way you made his heart beat faster. “I’d stay with you forever if it were possible—“
You left later that same night, slipped into your jeans and threw your shirt back on all the while Jake slept. You left your bra as a gift, sent Jake a text to say you were all good, just needed your own bed—and slipped out the same way you came in.
***~***~***~***~***~
Pete Mitchell had been expecting you for the better half of half an hour by the time he decided enough was enough and marched into your room. Scared of what he might find when he crossed the threshold—he closed his eyes and announced his presence as he knocked.
“It’s me.” Mav was met with silence, he looked around expecting you to be half decent getting ready for work, except you were still very much sleeping in the middle of your warm fluffy bed covers. “Iris you're gonna be late, what are you still doing in bed? It's seven forty five!”
“I’m not going—“ Was all you mumbled into your pillow as Pete pulled the blanket from off of you. Thank god you were at least wearing underwear.
“What do you mean you aren’t going in?” Pete asked with frowned eyebrows. “Of course you’re going in—“ He followed up as he looked at your alarm. Seven forty six.
“It means, I quit the program dad—I’m not going back.” You hadn’t bothered to mention it to Jake last night but after he’d been excused from Cyclones office you’d pretty much told Beau Simpson he could fuck himself.
“What? Why would you do that?” Again, your dad pressed you further for information. You hated that he never did tell you what had happened with some of your classmates. The entire system was rigged against you and he wasn’t gonna say a damn thing about it.
“You know why—“ Before you could even start your counter attack, Mav dropped his gaze. Watching as you rolled over with a groan.
“Hang on a minute—“ Pete paused his interrogation as you rolled over on your back, exposing the clear as day Hangman graphic strewn across the white T-short. H_ngm_n. With a little stick guy next to it. It had been a gift from Phoenix at a Christmas party a year or two ago. Pete remembers the night fondly until he comes back to the moment and the conclusion that his daughter shouldn’t be wearing Jake Seresins Hangman T-shirt. “Is that? Is that Hangman's shirt?”
“Huh?” You looked down at your chest.
Holy Crap. You picked up Jake's shirt by mistake in the darkness of his room.
“Oh, uh—“
“Iris? What are you doing sleeping in Hangman's shirt.” Oh god that picture he saw, no it couldn’t be. But that mirror looked awfully similar now that he thought back to it. Similar to the one in your room. “IRIS!”
“Dad, it’s not what it looks like.”

That's My Goddaughter
Tumblr media
Summary: Bradley might have told you he would back off if you started dating Jake, but what happens when he tells Maverick? Second part of Bradshaw’s Date
Word count: 2k
A/N: Here is part 2 of Bradshaw’s date! I hope you all enjoy this one as much as the first!! Thanks for reading!
Tumblr media
The look of bewilderment on Jake’s face was something Bradley would never forget. Maverick had been hounding Hangman all day to the point where others were starting to feel bad for him.
The group of them were sitting in one of their debriefs, where Mav was currently picking apart Jake’s near perfect run. Phoenix leaned over to Rooster and asked if he knew what was going on. The smug look on his face told her everything she needed to know. “What did you do, Bradshaw?”
Bradley was enjoying every second of today and would continue to enjoy it for many days to come. “I didn’t do anything. Hangman decided it was a good idea to take my sister out on a date last night.”
Bob choked on his water when he overheard what his teammate had said, drawing attention to the three of them. Hangman turned in his seat to see what was going on, but the second his eyes landed on Rooster, everything clicked. Phoenix leaned back in her seat and shook her head, “You’re in for it now.”
Bradley didn’t care in the slightest how Hangman felt. He was getting everything he thought he deserved. Mav dismissed the group but asked Jake to stay behind. The others walked out sending him looks of encouragement, knowing whatever conversation they were going to have, wasn’t going to go in his favor.
Jake remained in his seat in the front row, waiting for Maverick to explain what was going on. The look on Bradley’s face gave him a small insight to what this was going to be. He had hoped his teammate would leave personal business outside of work, but clearly that was asking for too much. It was karmas way of slapping him in the face.
“I’m going to come right out with it. Just because Bradley can’t do anything about it, doesn’t mean the same rules apply to me. That’s my Goddaughter and you better treat her a hell of a lot better than you cover your teammates out there. That girl is something special and you best believe I won’t be the only one keeping close tabs on you.”
All Jake could do was nod his head. He didn’t know if he was talking to his captain or Pete Mitchell and any comment he wanted to say wouldn’t go over well.
“For as long as you date her, expect every day to be like this. You will see no special treatment and will continue to be pushed harder than everyone else until I see you are good enough for her. Do I make myself clear?”
Jake let out a slow breath, “Yes, sir.”
Maverick dismissed him, but called out when he was near the door of the room.
“Oh, and Lieutenant, Admiral Kazansky sends his best.”
Just as Jake thought it couldn’t get worse, his body seemed to freeze at those last words. He had always wanted admirals to know his name, strived for it, but not like this. This was an abuse of power and there was nothing he could do about it but swallow his pride.
Jake was fuming as he made his way back into the locker room. While most of his teammates figured it was because of how Maverick made him look today, it was actually for a whole different reason.
The moment he walked through the door, all conversations stopped. Word had gotten around of what happened and opinions were formed because of it. But no one was dumb enough to say those opinions out loud to either guy.
Jake looked around the room until he spotted the one guy that was slowly pushing him over the edge. The cocky smirk was normally seen on the blonde pilot, but in this case, the roles were reversed, and Bradley was racking in every ounce of discomfort that was coming from him.
It didn’t take a genius to know Jake was furious. His usual slicked back hair was sticking up in a few places where he had run his hand through it. His cheeks have a slight pink tint to them that for once wasn’t because of the California heat. But what really stood out, was the silence. Jake was always quick to run his mouth and had a comeback for everything. So, when the pilot stood there and stared at Bradley, the others knew things were about to get ugly.
“Do you get off on the fact that you’re messing with your sister’s life?” Bradley’s smirk quickly fell when he heard the question directed at him.
“Excuse me?” Jake took a few steps towards him, making Coyote and Bob shift towards them in case they needed to break anything up.
“Because your sister told you to back off, you went and ran to Maverick about it, knowing he would be pissed. Well congratulations pal, Maverick is going to keep pushing me until I walk away. But for once did you ever think how your sister would feel if she found out what was going on?”
Bradley stood up now, fists clenched as he tried to keep his anger in check. “Are you threatening me?”
Jake let out an unamused laugh, “And here I thought I was the most self-absorbed person in the room. This isn’t about you. Hell, this isn’t even about me. Your sister told me last night that it was one of the first times where she felt happy and could let go of the past for a few hours. Being back here hasn’t only affected you, she lost her dad too. Her mom lost her husband in the same damn house ya’ll are staying in. While you went off into the Navy, she was the one who stayed back and took care of her.
“Did she ever tell you the number of stories your mom shared with her about your dad? About Top Gun and how much he loved flying with Maverick? Those memories have stayed with her to this day, making the move out here so damn hard for her. But now you have some personal vendetta to make sure my life is nothing but hell. Did you stop and think about how she would feel if I walked away because I didn’t want to deal with all this bullshit?”
Jake’s face was now red with rage, whole body tensed. He kept trying to put himself in Bradley’s shoes, but he couldn’t see himself doing this to one of his sisters. Not when the price was this high.
Bradley on the other hand had lost most of his color. He had zero idea his sister was unhappy following him out here and had only wanted to look out for her. He knew how ruthless Hangman was in the skies, but he didn’t think to separate that from his personal life. Yeah, the speech he gave that night had him second guessing a few things, but Jake was known to be a smooth talker. How was he supposed to know if he was telling the truth?
“And I hate to tell you this but I’m not giving up that easily. It’s going to take a hell of a lot more than Maverick telling me how to be better or Admiral Kazansky making his position known. Your sister is worth putting up with all of this and more. So do us all a favor and get over yourself.”
Jake grabbed his stuff out of his locker and slammed the door, not sparing anyone a second glance. The room was silent. Nothing could’ve prepared any of them for what just happened. Natasha glanced over at Bradley and saw how defeated he looked. The once gloating man was long gone as he processed everything that was said.
Bob went over to him and gave his shoulder a quick pat. A small show of support but he then proceeded to walk out of the room. Everyone slowly followed, not sure what else to do. Jake Seresin was always the villain of the story. No one ever questioned that. But today, roles were reversed, and the once golden boy of Bradley Bradshaw had now been painted as the new antagonist.
His phone started to vibrate, and he looked down to see that you were calling. After a few breaths to calm himself down, he answered.
“Hey, so I know you weren’t too thrilled about me going on a date with Jake. But I really appreciate you at least letting me leave the driveway last night. I promise he was the perfect gentleman. Even let me talk him into stopping for ice cream on the way home. Something you never let me do. Also, he told me how great of a teammate you are.” He snorted when you said that last part.
“Good try. I know he would never say that.” Your laugh on the other line confirmed that.
“It was worth a try. Anyway, I made dinner if you want it. I thought maybe we could stay in and watch a movie tonight. My way of saying thank you for not being psycho about all this.” Bradley shook his head knowing he was in fact acting like that.
“Yeah, that sounds good. I have to talk to Mav really quick and then I’ll be on my way home.” He had grabbed his stuff and slowly made his way out of the locker room to Maverick’s office.
“Oh, tell him I said hi and that he owes me dinner. I convinced Penny to give him a second chance. Tell him not to mess this one up. I can only work so many miracles.” Bradley smiled as he sat across from Mav.
“I’ll let him know. See you in a few.” He hung up and sighed. Mav was sitting at his desk with a knowing smile on his face, making Bradley feel even worse about the situation.
“A few things. First, I’m going to need you to lay off on Hangman. I appreciate you making him sweat a bit, but Y/N seems to really like him, and I don’t want to ruin that.” Maverick nodded his head and sat back in his chair.
“Are you sure? Ice and I had a whole good cop bad cop thing planned out. He was going to be the bad cop because he just has this stare that seems to pierce your soul. Used to give me nightmares back in the day.”
Bradley couldn’t help but chuckle, “Yeah, Mav. Thanks though. Also, she said you owe her dinner. Convinced Penny to give you a chance or something.” He watched Mav’s whole face light up.
“I owe that kid a whole lot more than dinner.” He watched as Bradley stood up and make his way to the door.
“I know you may not like this, but she has to grow up some time. I’d rather it be here where we can help her if she falls than halfway across the country. Seresin has his work cut out for him, but I think he’s a good choice for her. Cut yourself some slack though. She’s a lot like your mom in the sense that no one is going to stop her from doing what she wants.”
Bradley offered him a small smile and walked out. Maverick waited a few minutes to make sure he was gone and pulled out his phone to text Ice.
“The kid said to lay off, but what he doesn’t know won’t hurt him.”

book club activities || r.b.f
Tumblr media
Summary: Bob's girlfriend has a book club.
Warnings: Suggestive texting, absolute nonsense, somehow Bradley and Jake stole the show (idiots)
Word Count: 940
Pairings: Bob Floyd x f!reader
Authors Note: Happy birthday @bobfloydsbabe! This is the dumbest thing I've ever written and it also sucks but it has your favourite lil dude in it and I love you! I hope you've had a great birthday! Enjoy this insanely weird drabble.
Tumblr media
“You should really read it.”
Bob sighed, rubbing a hand across his face. “Sweetheart, I’m not reading Twilight with you.”
His girlfriend pouted from the corner of the couch, aiming a kick against his shin. “But you liked the films.”
“No, I said I thought they weren’t bad. I never said I liked them.” They had watched all of the films a weeknight ago, which Bob initially had only done to please her.
“And you said the films were better than the books.” Bob argued, reaching over to right the blanket covering her body as it had half fallen to the floor.
“Yes but I still think you should read the books.” She said, crossing her arms across her chest.
“I will go out and get you your favourite food, two new books, a new notepad and pencils if you don’t make me read the books.” Bob placated, hoping that it would satisfy her.
She looked thoughtful, eyebrows drawing together as she contemplated his offer.
“Which books?
Bob smiled, knowing he was winning. “Whichever you want, darling.”
She stared at him for another moment before tossing the blanket aside to cuddle into his side.
“I want Pho, I don’t have the last two books of ASOIAF and please get me a A4 notebook, not A5,” she paused momentarily, hand splayed against his abdomen, “and cuddles please.”
He pressed a kiss to her forehead, slouching slightly so she could get more comfortable. “Yes ma’am.”
The rain was smattering against windows, the sun setting just behind the tree line they could see from their backyard.
Ever since  Bob had found out he was going to be stationed permanently in San Diego, they decided to get a house and set down some roots.
“I love you, even if you don’t want to read Twilight with me.” She whispered against his T-shirt, making Bob laugh. She soon joined in and they giggled together for a few moments before once again settling into the couch.
“I love you too. Do you want Pho from the place close to base or the other one?”
She hummed, eyes falling shut as she snuggled into his side. “Base please.”
Bob waited a few minutes before her breathing evened out and then gently untangled himself from her embrace.
After making sure she was properly tucked in for her nap, he grabbed his keys and wallet. He had a promise to make good on.

Next Day
“Dude, you should read them though, they’re actually pretty good. Not the writing but the story. Love triangle, vampires, werewolves and hybrid babies.” Rooster said through a mouthful of scrambled eggs.
Phoenix snorted, rolling her eyes. “Not the most intriguing introduction, Roos.”
Bob watched as they jabbed back and forth, pushing his food around on his plate.
Hangman and Coyote sat down with their trays, interrupting the squabble happening across from Bob.
“What’s up?” Javy asked.
“Are you team Edward or team Jacob?” Rooster asked, completely serious.
Coyote’s eyebrows shot up, mouth pressed into a tight line. “Dude, are you talking about Twilight?”
“Yes! Bob watched the films with his girl and he doesn't want to read the books but I think they’re pretty good and Nat says they’re crap and now we gotta decide what team.” Bradley rambled, earning another smack to the side.
Javy stared them both down, an unimpressed look on his face. “I don’t like fantasy.”
“WHAT? Dishonour on you, dishonour on your family, dishonour on your cow!” Rooster dramatically gasped, clutching at his chest.
The entire table rolled their eyes at their teammates' dramatics, all of them now used to Bradley’s antics.
“Okay fine. I didn’t care enough to choose a team, the films were good and I’ve already read the books but don’t tell my girlfriend that. She’ll never let me live it down.” Bob spoke up, making Bradley smile.
“I knew it. Everyone has read those books, except Javy here, apparently.” Rooster announced proudly, reaching across the table to fist bump Bob.
“I personally am Team Bella. Neither Edward or Jacob were good for her. Jacob was an immature kid, not his fault, it’s just his character and Edward had issues. Real issues. The best thing for her would have been to get the hell out of Forks and work on becoming her own person.”
The entire table fell silent, staring at Jake who didn’t even look up from his plate. No one spoke for a few beats before Bradley began clapping like a seal, shit eating grin in place.
Bob shook his head as he reached for his phone, texting his girlfriend. She would enjoy the currently bizarre conversation that was taking place and maybe he could get out of book club if he mentioned that apparently both Rooster and Hangman were fans of the series.
Hangman and Rooster like Twilight.
Make them bring food and the books next time you invite them over.
PS, you’re still gonna read the books with me, pls.
Damn, he really thought he’d gotten away with reading the darn books again.
If you and I are going to have a book club, no one else is welcome.
How come??
Club activities are strictly taking place in the bedroom.
He sent off the last text quickly, before pocketing his phone and turning back to the conversation.
He didn’t receive an answer until he was scheduled to fly. There was a short message and a picture attached.
Fine.
And beneath the text was a picture partially obscuring the view of what seemed to be his girlfriend’s favourite lingerie set and all four books of the series.
Bob couldn’t wait to go home.

A thought I had while watching top gun is in the scene when mav is like "don't tell me tell his family" and Bob looks sad I imagine that he's imagining someone having to tell his wife that he's dead 😭 the angst especially if they have kids / she is pregnant
omg yes!!
“don’t tell me, tell it to his family,” is replaying in bob’s mind all day.
he’s off, and everyone can tell he’s off.
“baby on board, everything okay?” even hangman’s voice doesn’t have the usual teasing tilt to it.
“p-peachy keen,” bob tries for nonchalance but the truth is, the thought of you having to come with your son to collect his belongings because he died on this mission is ringing like a bell in his head. R
hangman hums but they all move on with their day. bob isn’t there yet with his teammates to give them the whole rundown of your marriage and your son.
it lingers on his mind though. he doesn’t feel better till he’s parking in the front of the house and watches you open the door.
you notice something’s wrong with your husband immediately, bob knows you know when you stop your son from running across the yard and whisper, “wait till daddy gets to the door baby,”
“hi daddy!” bob’s miniature twin jumps on him and bob feels the ache in his chest dull slightly.
“hi buddy, you been good to your mama?” you ruffle bob’s gelled hair as you son affirms.
“and i helped her with dinner! we made,” he pauses, “mama, what did we make again?”
bob laughs then, heart light with the love of his son.
“we made daddy’s favourite, walleye.”
bob ushers you inside and locks the door behind himself.
“why don’t you go wash up buddy? and i’ll help your mama plate up?”
your son is wiggling out of bob’s arms in a flash.
you turn to bob and cup his cheek, “what happened today, robby?”
his eyes fill with tears behind his glasses, “something mav said,” you wait for him to continue in silence. “about us having to explain to the other pilots’ family and i just, i couldn’t stop thinking of you having to come collect my suit.”
“oh robby,” you coo, pulling him to your chest as your hand glides up and down his back. “i’m sorry that was on your mind today baby.”
you wipe his tears but know there’s really nothing you can say to get him not to worry about that. “i know you’ll do your best to make it back to us, i knew what i was getting into.” you say softly, feeling his nod on your shoulder.
“it just really got to me,” he says, wiping his cheeks before your son comes back out of the bathroom. “i love you, both of you.”
“i love you too,” you kiss him only to be interrupted by little feet pattering,
“mama, i want a kiss too.” bob chuckles as he pulls away and for now he’s comforted by the fact that he is home.

Crash and Burn || Jake "Hangman" Seresin
Summary: Request! Y/N and Jake have a very… chaotic relationship. Many ups and downs between the two Naval Aviators. One moment they’re fine the next they are at each other’s throats. Everything goes wrong for the duo in training when Y/N catches Jake’s jet wash as he tries to show off for Maverick. Hurt/Comfort. Readers call sign is Jinx.
Pairing: Jake “Hangman” Seresin x Y/N
Word Count: 4,000+
Tumblr media
Arrogant. Cocky. Selfish.
Just a few words to describe your least favorite classmate, Hangman. He had mastered the art of getting underneath your skin. Phoenix always told you to play it cool around him or he’d just keep doing the same. You never learned your lesson always arguing back when he had to say some stupid misogynistic thing about female pilots. You had to hand it to Phoenix though, she never let Hangman work her up.
You hadn’t known him prior to Top Gun like your other classmates had. They gave you a forewarning when it came to Jake. Watch your back or he’d be the one shooting at it. You didn’t believe it at first, but you learned.
Quickly, you understood their warnings toward him. The world revolved around Jake Seresin to Jake Seresin. You dreaded when Mav called your name to go up in the air with him. You had yet to have any sort of success when you flew with Hangman. It always ended up in one or both of you being taken down by Mav. Jake never communicated with you always throwing you off your game. He was so good at making you feel less than.
Today was no different. You heard your name paired with Hangman’s drawing a subtle sigh out of your mouth. You let your head rest against your palm as you thought over your options. You didn’t have a back seater today. Fritz called in sick with the flu leaving you flying solo, something you rarely did. You could beg Mav to switch the teams up or you could deal with it. You opted for the first option.
Heaving your body out of your desk you slowly made your way to your teacher while the rest of the class went to the locker rooms. You really didn’t think you had it in you to deal with Jake today. Not sleeping well the previous night due to getting into a heated argument with an ex-boyfriend all your energy was zapped. Certainly not a good combination to be taking an F-18 up in.
“Mav,” You paused waiting for him to look up to you, continuing only when you had his attention, “Fritz is sick today. Don’t you think another team should go up with Hangman?”
He shook his head looking down at whatever he was working on, “No, Jinx.”
“But I don’t have a wizzo.” You frowned knowing it really didn’t make a damn difference today. You were just running the first half of the course. You didn’t really need Fritz until it was time to train to drop the bomb.
He shrugged, “You’ll fly without a back seater today. Understood?”
Letting out another small huff of annoyance you nodded, “Yes sir.”
“Good, now go get ready. You and Seresin are up first.”
“Course we are.” You nodded leaving the classroom slowly to go get changed. You’d been lucky to avoid being teamed up with him the last few training sessions, but your luck seemed to end today.
Jake was interesting to you. You certainly didn’t hate the man, but he made it so hard to actually enjoy his presence. He always had that stupid cocky grin on his face like nothing could knock it off. You had only seen him slip up with Rooster once other than that he was his usual arrogant self.
Changing quickly, you knew the faster you were up in the air the faster your session would be with Hangman. Exiting the women’s locker room, you made your way to your jet. Going through the pre-flight checklist thoroughly you didn’t hear your teammate approach you.
“Going to be able to keep up today, Jinx?” Jake leaned his frame against your jet taking a full look of you. A soft smile formed when he saw just how focused you were on your task at hand, hardly paying him any attention. He’d never admit it, but he lived for moments like this with you. Moments where he could study you without the world knowing just what he was doing.
He met you at the Hard Deck the night before Top Gun. You seemingly knew Phoenix and Rooster from a previous deployment. You quickly grabbed Jake’s attention with that pretty smile and angelic laugh. Jake swore he could hear your giggle across the bar. A sound so pretty he’d never dare to admit it to anybody.
He grabbed your attention in any way that he could. Even if it meant being the bad guy in your reality. At least you were paying him the attention he craved from you. Quickly, he found what pressed your buttons and made sure to press them whenever he could. Just to get into a debate with you. He loved it. He adored you.
Looking up at the interruption you kept the level head on your shoulders. Trying to do what Phoenix did so gracefully, “Can you just fly the mission? Not pull your usual bullshit Seresin?”
Placing a hand on his chest he feigned hurt, “I’m wounded Jinxie.”
Ignoring him you continued, “Can you? For once.”
Smirking he started sauntering off, like he owned the damn air strip, “Doubtful darling. Gotta be fast.” He threw you a wink before disappearing into his jet.
Rolling your eyes, you tried not to let him get the best of you. It was typical Hangman behavior. One that you would never be able to crack it seemed. You thought maybe you’d be able to in the beginning. You should’ve just listened to Rooster and Phoenix instead of trying with him. All it ended in was arguments every single time you tried to have a normal conversation with the man. You couldn’t lie though, there was something so damn appealing about Jake Seresin that kept you crawling back for more.
Signing off on your paperwork you hopped into your jet. Placing your helmet on you smiled as you took in the front dash. You just loved this. It never ceased to amaze you just how lucky you were. You were able to fly jets across the world. Meeting new people and finding new cultures never got old to you. And you got to fly around on top of it all? You loved every single second of your Naval career. Not having a single regret about all of your adventures.
Taxing onto the runway you waited behind Hangman as he got the all clear. He was Dagger One in this scenario, and you were Dagger Two. Thankfully, all you had to do was keep up with him and not have him on your ass chirping you every five seconds. You hated flying as Dagger One with Hangman as your wingman. It felt like your heart would burst from the sheer stress of trying to deal with him.
You got the all clear taking off finding Hangman in the straightaway. You accelerated already noticing how fast he was moving before you even begun the timed trial. Mav raced in beside the two keeping an eye out, “Two minutes fifteen seconds until target. Time begins when Hangman clocks it. Good luck.” Mav flew off above watching the duo from his eagle eye view.
“Ready Jinx?”
You were honestly surprised he gave you any warning before he took off, “Ready when you are Hangman.”
“Let’s turn and burn baby.” You heard the clock begin. Locking your eyes onto the back of Hangman’s jet you decided he wouldn’t be getting away from you that easily this time.
You kept up for the first thirty seconds before he punched it even further, “Hangman you’re going to fast!” You yelled into your mask trying to accelerate yourself. You started losing him as he only punched it even further.
“You’re not going fast enough!” He countered.
Your eyes lowered knowing he wasn’t going to let up so you sped up as much as your comfort level would allow you, which still wasn’t fast enough, “Hangman slow down!” You began pleading with the asshole pilot.
“Speed up Y/N!”
He never used your real name. He was challenging you. Sighing to yourself you kicked it up a notch not feeling all that great with your speed and closeness to the ground, “I can’t keep up!”
You heard him audibly groan into the comms, “Jesus Jinx, fine.”
Your eyes nearly popped out of their sockets as his jet dropped speed suddenly. You knew you didn’t have enough time to slow down, or you’d plow right into the back of him. Decelerating at the same time you dipped slightly to avoid crashing right into him, “Shit, Jake what the fuck was that?”
“You said to slow down so I did.” You could practically hear the cockiness lace his voice from a mile away.
“Not like that you fucking asshole.” You sighed this time feeling your heart rate go down a bit. You’d had many close encounters in the jet but nothing like that.
“Hey Jinxie. Calm down.”
“Jesus,” You grumbled positioning your jet back up behind his, “Just go Seresin.”
You weren’t sure what happened but one second you were fine the next your right engine was out and your left one started sputtering, “Fuck.” Internally cursing you didn’t have a back seater to help you talk yourself through the next few minutes. Thankfully your training kicked in.
“Right engine out. No Fire. Restarting. Left engine compromised.” Calmly you spoke into your mask.
“Jinx?” You heard Mav’s voice come in.
“Jinxie what’s wrong?” Hangman’s voice chimed in right after Mavericks. He failed to see you behind him as he sped back up.
Desperately you hit the right combination of buttons, but nothing seemed to feed the engine the fuel it needed. “Shit. Not responding. Climbing to 5,000.” You pulled you plane into the climbing position trying to buy yourself some time.
“Jinx. What’s going on?” Mav sounded concerned.
As you were in the middle of pulling up your heart sank hearing another alarm go off, “Oh shit. Left engine out. No fire. Attempting restart.” You managed to stagger out. Again, you attempted to refuel and refire the engine
Mav came down to your level eyes wide seeing neither of your engines burning, “Jinx eject!” He sounded a bit panicked you noted.
Your training was kicking in though. You had maybe five seconds to try again. After that you’d have to eject or you’d be toast, literally.
“Restarting right and left engine.” Ignoring Mav’s orders, you punched and prayed the engines would respond.
“Jinx eject now!” Maverick commanded you.
“Fuck! Eject Jinxie! Now” You didn’t see Hangman come back around surveying the situation he believed he put you into.
No sign of life from your jet really caused your heart to sink knowing you really only had one option now. Your heart started racing seeing how low to the ground you already were, 2,000 fucking feet. This was going to hurt, “Fuck, ejecting.” You pulled the handle from underneath your seat sending you into the air.
The next thirty seconds felt like a blur as you were free-falling in the air. Your parachute worked it was just terribly disorienting. You’d trained for this but had never had to do it in the field. Shuddering, you heard your jet crash into the desert below. This wasn’t going to be very easy to explain to the admiral.
You knew you were far too low to the ground when you were in the jet to make a graceful landing. You just didn’t expect how bad it would actually hurt once you hit the rocks of the desert below you. You hit the ground hard and fast, the parachute not having the proper amount feet to descend to really break your fall.
Rolling to a stop as the back of your head hit a boulder immediately you knew something wasn’t right. Hardly being able to keep your eyes open you attempted to stand up only falling right back into the same spot you rolled into, “Fuck.” You groaned closing your eyes feeling terribly weak.
You didn’t see any blood on your chest or legs which was a very good sign, but you just couldn’t keep your eyes open. The only way you seemed to stay coherent after cracking your head against the bolder was fluttering your eyes.
Hearing the faint mumbles of Mav and Hangman you couldn’t really make them out. You tried to stand again but miserably failed as your legs shook far too violently to stand on their own. A small tear fell down your face as the feeling of utter defeat began to take over. You had never experienced your body giving out on you so dramatically before. It was humbling when you couldn’t even stand on your own two feet.
Trying to keep your eyes open you focused on the words coming through your comms. You faintly heard Maverick, “Jinx, please copy.”
Before your eyes completely gave out on you, you heard another soft, “Jinxie please!” Sounding awfully familiar to Hangman’s usually annoying voice.
Opening your mouth, you so desperately wanted to let them know you were alive. You were okay. But you just couldn’t seem to get the words out.
“Mav, I didn’t see a parachute, did you?” Shit, they thought you were dead? You were risky but not risky enough to kill yourself.
“I think I did. Fuck. Jinx, please copy.” He tried you one more time a little beside himself. He’d witnessed the entire accident in horrifying detail taking him right back to his own accident from years prior. You pulled your plane up just as Hangman punched it immediately shutting your right engine down and compromising the left with the wash he left behind. He’d seen it several times out in the field but nothing that bad since his own accident.
Frustrated that you couldn’t communicate with your teammates you began to cry more opting you to slide the helmet right off your head to get some fresh air. Feeling a warm trickle down the back of your neck you hesitantly turned your helmet over revealing a rather large crack near the base of it. This was a very bad sign.
Slowly you placed a hand to the back of your skull slightly horrified at the red blood that coated your hand entirely. Fuck. You knew this wasn’t good at all. Trying to stay conscious you unzipped a pant leg off your flight suit planning to use that as a cloth to apply pressure to your head wound.
With all your strength you had left you leaned your head against the boulder placing the piece of flight suit in between praying you had enough pressure to keep you awake while you waited for rescue. Realistically you knew you only had to wait a few minutes before a team of medics were on the way. They were probably already halfway to you. All you had to do now was keep your eyes open. You could do that.
Grabbing your helmet, you decided to listen to the air chatter knowing at the very least it’d keep you focused on something rather than falling into unconsciousness. It pained you to hear the desperate plea’s from not only Hangman and Mav but command as well. It seemed as if everybody was trying to get you to respond.
Again, you attempted to speak only to be met with the utter silence of nothing coming out. It’s like the rock knocked your ability to speak right out of your own head. It was a rather gut-wrenching feeling to not be able to say a word. Just to let them know that you were okay. But you couldn’t. Your body simply refused.
Another few minutes passed which felt like hours as you sat there in the beating sun. Just as you were about to give into the darkness you heard the helicopter above you. Looking over a few vehicles approached in the distance. A small smile flickered on your face knowing they finally made it to you.
Before you knew it a few medics approached you quickly triaging the situation. They realized how incoherent you really were as you tried responding to their questions but couldn’t seem to talk.
“Hey Jinx. We’re going to patch you up alright?” A familiar face leaned down brushing the hair out of your face, “Just try and stay awake, okay?” It clicked that it was your team’s physician. He knew you very well taking your vitals and stats all the time.
“Let them know we’ve got her. Critical care.” You heard him say before placing something cold around your neck.
“You’re going to be alright. We’re taking you to the base hospital.” He smiled softly at you before he gave the next round of orders to his team.
The next while was a blur of you floating in and out of consciousness mixed with tons of people asking you too many questions. None of which you could answer as your voice was still missing.
Finally, you were able to sleep given the okay from a worried looking doctor you’d never seen before. You couldn’t seem to care as unconsciousness swallowed you whole.
Tumblr media
The faint beeping brought you out of the deep slumber you were in. Rolling your head to the side you spotted Hangman sleeping in the chair next to your bed. Initial confusion rolled over you and you unfortunately heard the beeping pick up pace rapidly.
The change in background noise brought Hangman out of the light sleep he was in. He had been waiting on you for the last twelve hours or so. Refusing to leave your side until he knew that you were okay.
The initial prognosis given to them wasn’t great. The medics noted you as delirious, out of it, non-responsive before you went out completely. It worried him beyond belief. Especially knowing it was likely his actions that got you here. Mav kept trying to reassure him that it wasn’t his fault, but you got caught up in his jet wash. Just like Mav did all those years ago. It’s a freak occurrence and 99% of the time jets handle it fine. You were just one of the unlucky ones.
He looked over to you seeing your panicked expression. His face softened as he realized how much this must be for you, “Hey Jinx. You’re in the hospital. Do you remember what happened?”
You felt some sense of relief knowing he was real. Sitting right there. You weren’t dreaming. You were back to the land of the living. You nodded recalling having to eject from your jet. You don’t remember much after that though.
“Can you speak?” He scooted the chair closer, so he was right up on the bed, right next to you.
“Yeah.” You managed to croak out. Your throat was feeling rather dry. Likely from all the sand and dirt you inhaled out there.
Grinning at the sound of your voice he grabbed your hand, “Good, let me go get a doctor.” He began to stand up before you stopped him by grabbing at his hand like he just did yours.
“No!”
He paused cocking his head to the side studying you curiously, “Just give me a minute. They’re going to ask a lot of questions and…” You paused not sure if he was even listening. This was Hangman after all. To your utter surprise he had his eyes locked on you, soaking up your every word. You decided to continue, “My head really hurts. I don’t want to talk to them just yet.”
Sighing Hangman looked all too conflicted. What was five minutes anyway? On the other hand, if your head really hurt you that bad why didn’t you want to see a doctor? Didn’t you want the help? Opting to go with your wishes he sat back down making a note of the time, he wasn’t going to give you more than the five minutes you requested.
“Thank you.” You smiled softly seeing him sit there against his better judgement.
“Sure. Are you alright at least?”
Closing your eyes, you took a deep breath in, “I’m okay. I just don’t feel great.”
“You scared us up there. You scared me.” He admitted whispering it almost so you couldn’t here.
Mustering a small halfhearted laugh, “Like you really care Seresin.” His face dropped immediately after your comment. Meaning it in more of a joking manner you didn’t think he’d take you so seriously.
“Why would you say that? Of course, I care Y/N.”
“One less pilot you have to deal with.” You kept trying to joke with him, but he wasn’t letting you. Taking it far more seriously than you were.
Shaking his head he grabbed your hand, “Stop that.”
“Stop what?”
He groaned. Frustrated that he wasn’t so great at showing real emotion, “Acting like I don’t care. I do care. A lot.”
“You have a funny way of showing it.” It slipped out way faster than intended. You didn’t want to make him feel like a total asshole, but your concussed brain had other ideas.
Head down Jake sighed, “I’m sorry Jinxie. I really am. I never would have thought… I wouldn’t have done that if I would have known…”
“It’s okay Jake.” You shushed him. You had never seen this side of the cocky Jake Seresin before. You weren’t even sure if Jake had a more human side to him. All it took was you nearly cracking your head open to get him there. Who would’ve known?
He shook his head, “It’s not though. What happened to you. Seeing your plane go into freefall and not seeing you eject was hell Y/N. And then you didn’t respond? Mav and I could only think the worst.” His stare could have bore holes into the back of your head.
Cheeks heating up you turned away from him, “Well, I’m still here.”
Jake smiled picking your hand back up feeling the urge to have you close, “Thank goodness for that.”
Stitching your eyebrows together you looked him over, “You going soft on us?”
“Not on us.”
“What?” You asked him sincerely.
“Only for you.”
Sucking in another breath you turned on your side to face him completely, “What do you mean?”
“I can’t lose you Y/N.”
Where was all of this coming from? While you had to admit he was an incredibly attractive guy you never thought in a million years he’d be going for you. All the two of you did was bicker back and forth. Sure, it never got nasty but the two of you could never agree on the same thing. Not even toppings on a pizza. There always had to be an argument between the two of you.
“Are you saying you like me Jake?” eyeing him curiously you couldn’t take your eyes off of him as you anxiously waited for his answer.
He looked up at you. Studying your face for any sign of contempt. For any sign that your repulsed by the sheer fact that not only did he have a full-on crush on you. He was sure he just might love you to.
Nodding his head in agreement it he finally admitted it out loud, “Yes Jinxie. I like you.”
Smiling to him you grabbed one of his hands this time, “You know we aren’t in middle school anymore Jake.”
“Hmm?”
“If you like someone you can be nice to them. You know instead of making them eject and landing them in the hospital.”
Chucking he looked you right in the eyes, “I’m sorry Y/N. Would you give me a chance to prove I’m not a middle school boy?”
Returning his laugh you squeezed his hand, “I’d love to get to know adult Jake.”
“Friday. 6 o’clock. I’m picking you up and taking you out to a nice dinner.”
Raising your eyebrows you took another long look at him, “I can’t wait.”

The energy in the air was infectious, nothing but laughter and love filling the space while the alcohol flowed freely. Your feet ached beneath you as you danced and sang along to an early 2000’s classic, smirking as your teammates watched through impressed eyes as you seamlessly balanced on one foot to unfasten your heel before switching to the other without missing a word or a beat and tossing them nowhere in particular. You took Rooster’s outstretched hands and swayed your hips in rhythm with his, you weren’t even sure what you were all doing at this point could be considered singing, but you were doing it anyway, spurred by the open bar and overwhelming joy in the room.
“Don’t be fooled by the rocks that I got, I’m still I’m still Jenny from the Block!” you sang around your laughter as Rooster passed you to Phoenix and from the corner of your eye you could see the man of the hour and his bride coming to join you. Mindful of her train you twirled her around in circles before she tried to drop it low the best she could in her form fitting gown.
“Careful, Mrs. Machado, don’t tempt me,” you giggled as you passed her back to her now-husband, slipping away from the group and making your way to the bar where Penny was sitting alongside Maverick.
“Not tending bar and yet here I find you,” you teased as you ordered another paloma.
“You all wore me out, I don’t know how any of you are still dancing,” she laughed and Maverick nodded in agreement.
“Oh, can’t handle a little dancing, Mav? Thought you were better than that,” you shot back and he laughed.
“Just you wait,” he warned before you went back to the floor, standing on the fringe as you watched your friends… no, your family having the time of their lives with the biggest smile on your face.
“Taking a breather?” A voice said suddenly beside you and you looked up to find Hangman, that megawatt smile never leaving his face once today.
“Refueling, I made this playlist and there are some good ones coming up,” you said before taking a hearty sip of your drink.
“Hey, you can only take half-credit,” he said, narrowing his eyes down at you and you just waved your hand in his direction.
“You contributed nothing but distractions,” you joked, recalling the night you two had set aside some time to tackle your task from the bride and groom.
“That’s enough Taylor Swift,” Hangman groaned and you just shook your head.
“It’s a wedding, Hangman. There’s never too much Taylor. Besides, these are requests directly from the bride, I’m just fulfilling my duties.” The bride was your best friend Abby, your biggest cheerleader and confidant from elementary school days, no matter the station or deployment your friendship had never wavered and when you met Coyote upon your return to Top Gun you knew without question you needed to get the two of them together.
“Okay, well this has to be on the playlist…” he said, trailing off as You Give Love a Bad Name poured through your bluetooth speaker and you just shook your head as Hangman started bobbing his head along and singing with such conviction you were sure he thought he was Bon Jovi himself. You couldn’t stifle your laughter watching as he stood and walked around the coffee table, giving you a performance worthy of the biggest of stages. You tried to fight it, you really did, but you loved this song just a little bit more than you wanted to rain on Hangman’s parade. Soon you were dancing around your living room with him, shouting lyrics and laughing until your sides ached.
It felt like fate… if you believed in that sort of thing, and you weren’t sure if you did but suddenly Bon Jovi was belting through the speakers and Hangman was giving you that same look he had that night, challenging you as he started to back up slowly with his hands up as if to say ‘you coming?’ Of course you were. You downed the rest of your drink, casting it aside on a nearby table and chasing after him. The two of you danced around each other, in your own little bubbles as you let loose and enjoyed the song yet somehow still completely in sync, turning to face each other at the exact same moment to shout ‘shot through the heart and you’re to blame, you give love a bad name’ before letting out loud laughs and continuing to move to the beat.
The entire squad had their eyes on you, their movements slowing as they watched the two of you so wrapped up in your own world, not paying attention to anyone but the other and once they broke through the shock of seeing you this way they were grateful. You and Hangman never really got along, not necessarily adversaries but definitely not friends either. They’d all assumed you’d become attached at the hip with your mutual love for classic rock, borderline obsessional investment in professional sports and similar skill set at a pool table but you just weren’t. You never really clicked. In the air you were consistently in tandem, the only person on the team he actually worked well with but once you touched down on the tarmac it was awkward exchanges and minimal interaction at the Hard Deck. It wasn’t until that night in your living room after a few too many glasses of wine and an impromptu dance party that you finally connected.
“Oh god, I love this song,” you said breathlessly as it morphed into ‘Autumn Town Leaves’ by Iron & Wine, flowing through the space and he just grinned down at you.
“You did pick it,” he said and he held out his hand for you to take. “Dance with me?”
“What have we been doing all this time?” you asked with a playful smirk and he just rolled his eyes before taking your hand for himself and pulling you into him. Earlier in the day you didn’t feel quite so small beside him… not when he clinked his beer bottle against yours in a pre-ceremony toast, not when you walked down the aisle as maid of honor and best man, not when he stood to steady you after your heel almost slipped off the edge of the raised platform during your speech but standing here now, easily swaying to the beat with your hand firmly in his grasp and the other around your waist you felt so small, so vulnerable under his gaze.
“You look like you’ve been having a lot of fun tonight, I’m glad,” he observed, pulling his eyes from yours to look around the space for a moment. “You did all of this, it’s impressive. I wasn’t sure you’d be able to pull off her casual and intimate vibe in this setting.” You really did have your work cut out out for you, with the knowledge of a sudden deployment always looming you’d rushed to pull everything together when you knew everyone could be there, leaving you closely monitoring (harassing, as Hangman would call it) a few local venues before snagging a rather fancy ballroom in a beautiful beachfront hotel thanks to a last minute cancellation. With the majority of the lights turned off, a hell of a lot of string lights, and carefully curated décor you’d managed to pull it all together. “You did good, kid.” You flushed under his praise, not entirely sure how to handle it.
“I wanted them to have the wedding they deserve,” you said softly, peering around his shoulder to watch the couple wrapped up in complete bliss as they danced a few feet away.
“Well, the way I see it, this reception is for you. A celebration for all your hard work.”
“You didn’t do so bad yourself, best man. Thank you for helping when I needed it,” you replied and a smile tugged at the corners of his lips, drawing your eyes down before you forced them upwards.
“Thanks for asking, thought I was going to have to force you to delegate,” he teased, twirling you out and away from him before pulling your chest into his back, arms wrapped around you as your hands flew up to brace yourself, gripping onto his forearm.
“I know how to delegate,” you protested and you felt him rumble with laughter behind you.
“No, sweetheart… you don’t,” he twirled you again, bringing you face-to-face again as the song ended and switched to something more upbeat but you felt trapped, not wanting to let go of his hand, not wanting him to remove his from your waist.
“I, uh,” you stumbled over your words as you realized your position under the weight of his gaze. “I have something I need to grab for Abby before they slip off for the night.” you said as you pulled away and made your way to where you’d been with Rooster and Phoenix earlier, looking for your shoes.
“Everything okay?” Rooster asked, watching as you frantically searched under tables and cursing yourself for being so careless with where you’d put them.
“Yeah, uh… just need my shoes. Have a feeling a place like this would frown upon me stomping around the common areas barefoot,” you replied.
“You and Hangman are very chummy tonight,” he stated and you looked up briefly to glare at him.
“I don’t know what you’re- it’s wedding politics. The best man and maid of honor are like… I don’t know, a team for the whole wedding,” you shot back and he let out a loud laugh.
“Slow dancing and that little Bon Jovi moment, which by the way felt like some kind of inside joke and was very alienating and uncomfortable to be around, is not politics but, whatever you say,” he sighed, grabbing your shoes from under a nearby table and handing them to you and you took them before all but running out of the ballroom and into the brightly lit lobby of the hotel. All of your earlier coordination was lost as you struggled to balance while fastening your heels and waiting for the elevator to arrive, stumbling in when the doors opened, letting out a sigh of relief as you leaned against the back wall.
“Oh, for the love of-” you muttered when a hand stuck through at the last moment, prompting the doors to reopen seconds before they’d shut as Hangman slid in and stood before you with a confused look on his face.
“You good?” he asked, looking you up and down and noting your slightly dejected posture in stark contradiction to how exuberant you’d been all night.
“Yeah, just a last minute bridal present… don’t want to forget it,” you answered, wanting him to drop it and get off on the next floor.
“You sure? You seem off,” he pressed and you looked up at him with annoyance.
“I’m fine, Hangman,” you said just as the elevator shuddered beneath you and your hands flew out to grip the metal bar behind you as it sputtered to a halt. The harsh lighting cut out, leaving you in complete darkness for a few minutes before fluorescent emergency lights flickered on with a faint buzz. “No… no, no, no this is not happening.” you groaned, stepping forward to press the call button to the front desk, listening to it ring and ring before disconnecting. In your periphery you watched Hangman slide down the wall and stretch his legs out before him, patting the space beside him and you sank to the floor with a sigh.
“Looks like we’re trapped,” he stated and you turned to look at him with annoyance for the most obvious observation.
“What gave you that impression?” you asked with an eye roll and he shrugged beside you.
“Someone will notice we’re gone soon, we’ll try the call button again in a few minutes… they probably just went to break,” he said, trying to diffuse the tension.
“No, they’ll probably think I went to pass out somewhere and you snuck off with one of the other bridesmaids that have been ogling you all evening.” you said with thinly veiled contempt for your fellow bridal party and he chuckled.
“Aren’t they supposed to be your high school friends too?” he asked and you just shook your head.
“I love Abby, I really do but… they’re her friends from the cheer team and I didn’t know why she was friends with them then and I don’t know why she’s friends with them now.”
“Were you not a cheerleader?” he teased.
“Are you really asking me that?” you asked and he laughed, nodding his head in agreement.
“Yeah, definitely not the type.”
“What is that supposed to mean?” You knew you had insinuated it first but you suddenly felt offended.
“You said it!” he defended, shooting his hands out in disbelief.
“You didn’t have to agree with me!”
“Do you want me to think of you as the cheerleading type?” he asked and this stumped you.
“Well, no, but-”
“Then why are we arguing?”
“I don’t know, I just… we’re in this fucking tiny metal death trap just waiting to plunge to our deaths so perhaps I’m a little on edge,” you sighed.
“We fly around in cramped cockpits and dodge literal missiles for a living and this is what has you rattled?” he asked as if it was the silliest thing in the world, and really it was.
“At least in my cramped cockpit I have the canopy, I can see all the open air around me and I’m in control. Here I am at the mercy of some bottle blonde at the front desk sticking around to do her job long enough to get us out of here.”
“Have faith in the bottle blonde,” he chuckled and you leaned your head back against the wall. Silence settled over the two of you and you tried to ignore the way his eyes trailed over you… something they’d been doing a lot more recently. Until that night with the wedding playlist you weren’t even certain he noticed you… and frankly you didn’t really notice him either. Even over surface level conversations when you were left alone by the rest of your friends you often felt like he was looking right through you, but you never cared because your eyes were always darting around looking for somebody else but now you felt undeniably seen by him and you didn’t like the way it prickled your spine and sent a wave of warmth flooding through your chest and flushed your cheeks. You didn’t like the way his hand felt against your waist and you definitely didn’t like how weightless you felt when he twirled you around. You also didn’t like the fact that those were all lies. “You’re very deep in thought,” he said suddenly, pulling you from your daze.
“I’m not,” you replied softly and he subtly nodded, eyes still trained on you and your heart beat out of rhythm for a moment when they locked with yours. He looked as if he was about to say something, like it was right there on the tip of his tongue with that mischievous glint in his eyes and you cocked your head slightly. “What?”
“You’re pretty,” he stated simply.
“Oh, you’re drunk,” you laughed, brushing him off entirely as your ears burned.
“Only a little, and you’re pretty,” he repeated and you furrowed your brows at him for a moment.
“Well, you’re pretty too.” you replied a little awkwardly and he chuckled.
“I wanted you to know, just in case someone hasn’t told you today… which would be a damn shame if they haven’t, that you were the prettiest girl in that room tonight.”
“Don’t tell Abby that,” you said softly, still trying to deflect as you looked down to your hands in your lap.
“I wouldn’t want to tell Abby that, I only want to tell you,” he hooked his finger under your chin and pulled your gaze up, “I don’t - uh… I’ve wanted to tell you that for a long time,” he confessed. “Since the first day I met you but good grief you know how to make a guy feel invisible,” he chuckled. “Which is okay, we’re just coworkers… you’re under no obligation to give me the time to tell you you’re the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen but you are, and I just wanted you to know that.”
Your breath hitched in your throat as he dropped his hand from your face, “we’re not just coworkers.”
“We are, and that’s okay.”
“I didn’t think you ever noticed me… not really, not unless we were in the air. I didn’t mean to make you feel invisible,” you said softly and he shook his head.
“I didn’t mean it in a bad way, sweetheart. And for the record, I always notice you.” You smiled at this, cheeks warming as you looked up at him with bright eyes and it just reaffirmed what he already knew… the most beautiful girl he’d ever seen.
“I wasn’t just returning the compliment out of obligation earlier, I really do think you’re pretty,” you said and he frowned.
“Just pretty? Not devastatingly handsome and the man of your dreams?”
“Well, that’s just a mouthful,” you giggled and he couldn’t help but smile at the sound. You’d subconsciously drifted closer, allowing your thigh to press against his and you felt your heart hammering in your chest, almost drowning out his words entirely.
“But you didn’t deny it,” he smirked.
“I didn’t deny it,” you confirmed and you felt his breath fan over your lips as he inched closer, eyes searching yours for any hesitation, any indication that he was misreading this moment and trying to will it into something else. The air between you felt charged, igniting a buzz along your skin as your breathing grew ragged under the weight of the anticipation and you pushed yourself forward slightly, eyes fluttering closed and allowing your lips to brush against his slightly. His fingers trailed up your neck, gently grasping the junction of your throat and your jaw to pull you closer and envelop you in a kiss. You melted into him, your hand moving to rest atop his as your other cupped his cheek. It was slow, slower than you might have anticipated from him if you’d ever given yourself the chance to think of what this moment might be like. He was taking his time, savoring the moment and prolonging it as long as he could. When his other hand gripped at your waist you let out a soft moan, parting your lips and allowing him to explore you with his tongue and the taste of him made you dizzy… faint spearmint and scotch. It was more intoxicating than the tequila you’d been drinking like water all night and you felt drunk from his touch as his hands wandered down, sliding over your leg peeking out of the slit in your dress. Desire thrummed through your veins as you moved your hand to tangle your fingers in the hair at the base of his head, gently pulling him further into you as you lowered yourself to the floor completely and created space for him to slot himself between your legs. You were so lost in the moment, in the feeling of his weight on top of you and how intentionally he was kissing you that you didn’t even feel the elevator shake to life beneath you as you trailed the heel of your shoe along his leg. You didn’t hear the ding of the doors opening when you tangled your hands in his hair as he kissed down the expanse of your neck and you almost didn’t hear the shocked gasps of your friends as they witnessed your compromising position on the floor of the elevator but that… that you did hear.
The two of you shot up, Jake all but lifting you to your feet as you smoothed your dress and tried to avoid the eye contact of every single one of your teammates, spare Coyote and Abby, standing before you. They all filed into the elevator silently, and Bob carefully handed you your clutch.
“Grabbed that for you,” he muttered and you nodded in thanks as your cheeks burned.
“Party was winding down, thought we’d head back to Rooster’s room for a little after party if you’d like to join,” Phoenix said, with a knowing smirk on her face as she watched the numbers tick by on the screen above the door.
“Sounds fun,” you said, clearing your throat and out of the corner of your eye you saw Rooster fist bump Jake and you used your clutch to hit him in the chest as Fanboy succumbed to his laughter. One by one you all joined in, filling the small space with the sound and you carefully tangled your fingers with Jake’s, looking up at him with a soft smile. “To be continued?” you whispered, barely to be heard over everyone else and he nodded.
“To be continued.”

the Bad Kids really spit in the face of Porter's philosophy this fight and it was beautiful. they were outnumbered 8 (counting Mazey and the hangman) against at the start 8 higher level enemies, but that number quickly spiraled to 11 with Jace's clones, and 14 with the 3 extra ragestars. Sure the Bad Kids eventually got a lot of helpers near the end of the fight, but only Squeem managed to do something and got people up and Bakur was a meat shield that did some damage to Porter.
Honestly, if he was smarter, Porter probably could have tpk'd the Bad Kids on his own. He had legendary resistances, legendary actions and was resistant to all forms of damage, immunity to fire, and a Barbarian's speed. Not to mention his attacks did massive amounts of force damage that Gorgug's rage doesn't resist.
If they went against him and tried to match him power for power they would have lost. Maybe they would have widdled him down, but there's a good chance they would be dead 8 vs 1, especially how tired they were from fighting off a swarm of dragons.
But the Bad Kids are good at what they do, they know there's more to fights than just damage. Strategy, utility spells, teamwork, that's what the Bad Kids used to win the day not raw power. They were smart, they targeted the squishy dangerous casters first to keep them out of play, they used their environment to get 4 deaths from lava alone.
Riz in his first turn did serious damage to the Rat Grinders with a single level 3 spell. Slowing down Mary Ann and Ruben left them so vulnerable. Mary Ann despite being a barbarian couldn't get to anyone to attack and meant she was out of the fight for the first half. Even more it destroyed the Bad Guys action economy since it meant one of the Jaces and Buddy had to use their turns to dispel the magic off their teammates, one of which was counterspelled. And of course he killed Kipperlily on his own. Drawing her ire, negating her sneak attacks against him and of course, casting hold person while she's in the lava killing her while telling her how bad she is at being a rogue.
Fabian did his thing, he is a fighter and a swords bard, it's his job to use his mobility to deal a lot of damage and boy did he do a lot of damage. He downed Ivy in a single turn and did damage to Oisin so he could be finished off with Fig. Then using his turns to draw fire, protect Mazey, give out Bardics when he could. And of course the biggest moment was freeing Bakur. In that moment, and it took a bit to pay off, they got an ally in a pit fiend, something strong and big that Porter couldn't ignore, and got the chance to get allies on the field to help them. It brought Squeem back so that he could get people up saved the day.
Fig is like Fabian, she does a lot of damage so why not celebrate it. On her first turn, she used her incredible mobility to get Oisin, probably the most deadly of the Rat Grinders (not counting Jace and Porter) as a wizard with access to 9th level spells, and she was able to almost kill him. She was also able to do damage to Ivy with her green flame blade to get her health down so Fabian could down her in one turn. She used a fire ball to kill ruben, damage Buddy, some of the Jaces, and Mary Ann, that got concentration checks on at least one Jace and Buddy that they failed losing a bigbsy hand and the banishment that Buddy was holding. unintentionally, the fireball was a big move because it got Mary Ann to target her, it's not great to have a barbarian as strong as her after you, but it kept her from attacking anyone else. It also got Mary Ann to take a lot of damage from the lava because she was so angry with Fig. Without that they would have had to deal with a second barbarian who unlike her teammates actually had some hit points. When she was back up she kills one of the Jaces with a well placed shatter. All the while acting like both a bard and a paladin, giving out bardics and doing damage to the bad guys.
Kristen, what can I say, both Kristens were amazing. I'm not a fan of K2, but she was clutch this fight, they literally couldn't have done it without her. Their healing was of course a saving grace, their support spells helped so much, and their utility was incredible. I'm not sure if they did any damage at all this fight, but they were so important. You can't really get better support than two clerics and they showed why. Keeping their party up and alive is one of the most important parts of combat. But there was also the utility they had in the fight, banishing Buddy was huge, no heals or revifiys if that was his thing, and keeping him from hurting anyone because clerics do have a lot of damaging spells. the dispel on the devil's nectar and their connection with Cassandra was clutch of course, it was what set the stage for their victory and allowed them to get Bakur on their side. And of course Ice Feast, Brennan, if you're gonna homebrew a spell for your friends, don't make it so powerful. yes, it's basically a reskin of heroes feast, but immunity to fire damage is overpowered when your final battle map has lava in it. Lava is very dangerous to those not immune to it as it killed two rat grinders and 3 of the Jaces in the fight, all while helping the bad kids and their allies.
Gorgug was amazing this whole fight, utilizing both the barbarian and the artificer part of him. He got the kill on Oisin who would have been very annoying to deal with and with his final attack he grapples porter away from his friends. It's not great for him, Porter is still a huge barbarian who can get around Gorgug's damage resistances with Force damage, but he keeps the big bad busy for as much as he can. He kept getting knocked down the whole fight, but thanks to his friends he never stayed down. Tossing a Jace into the Lava and stealing the votes from Porter with one hp was inspired. And in the final round he completely proves Porter wrong, the guy who told him being an artifer multiclass was a waste of time, who mocked him and called his gadgets stupid. Gorgug uses one of those stupid gadgets to help Adaine put the final nail into the big bad and bad teacher's coffin by taking points away from his saving throw letting Adaine's spell take hold. To add insult to injury he drops his rage for that last part just to show Porter that his toxic way of thinking didn't do him any good.
Adaine, I could talk about Adaine's amazingness in this last fight for days, she's my favorite character. This whole fight, she wasn't the blaster wizard that you expect from a lot of high level wizards. She does some damage, but her real effectiveness shined through crowd control and using utility spells to keep her party in the fight. the synaptic static was so devastating to the clumped up rat grinders and it damaged Jace before he could summon his clones so they were damaged at the start, not to mention the -d6 to a lot of their shit. she was just amazing this entire fight, even after being targeted by spells and attacks, she's the only other person kipperlily attacked other than Riz and her only successful sneak attack in her life against an enemy apparently. She also tanked several spells from the Jaces, flesh to stone, lightning bolt, bigbys hand, despite it all, she stays up until Porter has to use an aoe to deal with her, even taking some attacks from him. She saved her friends with Scatter and kept one of the Jaces out of the fight for a while, three of her friends down and she stands there looking at Porter defiantly, talking down to him and Jace despite them being teachers. And of course the detect thoughts with Fabian's brain worm present, allowing Ankarna to see the truth for herself in Porter's lies.
That detect thoughts was clutch, because like I said in the beginning, damage isn't everything. In a straight up fight they might have lost against Porter, the guy did just too much damage and was too tanky. But with that one utility spells they didn't beat Porter, but they outsourced to someone who could. They told his god the truth, that he was trying to kill her with his own thoughts, and she showed him what a goddess could do.
The Bad Kids are very powerful, but it's important to win when you're fighting for the sake of the world. It's important to be powerful but the Bad Kids are smart and strong, able to think and put aside ego and rage, something the rat grinders didn't understand. Spells and abilities aren't the same thing as being strong and now they know that

===
Bear slept for days; her body too weary for anything else except passing out and doing her best to heal after the traumatizing last few weeks. She wasn’t alone in her room though. Jake had hardly budged from the chair he sat in, watching her closely, like he half-expected her to vanish if he left or looked away for even a second. No one knew what to do, Bear had dropped a bomb on the conference room table like she had known what her team needed. She was funny like that, always managing to care for others even when she was the one needing a break.
But as she slept, the days passed by slowly. The mission had happened damn near a month ago and its effects were still being uncovered day by day. “Jake. Jake. Come on man, you need to shower.” Coyote had been trying to coax Jake to leave the room for the past two days, but nothing had worked. “I know you’re worried about her, but she isn’t going to magically wake up if you keep starin’ at her.”
“I know.” Jake’s voice was small, such a contrast from the loud, boisterous personality with an equally loud voice that everyone knew and some loved. “Five more minutes?”
“Man, come on. Please. You said five minutes 25 minutes ago,” Coyote was growing more and more frustrated by the second. He didn’t know what had happened to Bear, didn’t want to know, but even then, he was still trying to wrangle his best friend into taking care of himself. “I’ll get Fireball or Nix to come sit with her while you shower, okay?”
Jake watched Coyote step out for a moment to call or text someone to come and sit with Bear. Deep down, Jake knew that there would be no shortage of takers. Bear was loved by her team and damn near everyone who knew her, plus he had been occupying the room for nearly 5 days, someone likely had something that they wanted to say to her without him around. “I miss you, Teddy,” he muttered, squeezing her hand before placing it back on top of the covers. “Please be okay.”
He sat in silence for a while, eyes flicking over the healing bruises, the bandages, and the drab hospital gown that covered her. She was still Bear in every way that mattered, but the question was, would she remember him? Would she remember the chaste cheek kiss nearly a month ago now, how she called him Flyboy? God, he hoped so.
Jake was broken from his reverie when Phoenix came into the room. “Hey Bagman.” Her voice was soft like she was speaking to a frightened child instead of her teammate. “How’s our girl?”
“Breathing. I know they did something to her oxygen earlier,” he replied, gazing down at her face, tracing its lines with his eyes. “Apparently she’s doing better than expected.”
“That’s great.” Phoenix didn’t know how to proceed with this conversation. The man before her was so far from the Jake she knew and she didn’t know how to handle it. “That’s really good.”
He swallowed hard. “Yeah. She’s a fighter.” Tears were pricking his eyes and Jake quickly blinked them back. “Thanks for staying with her.”
“Hey. It’s not a problem. Should warn you that Bradshaw insisted on tagging along. I think he feels bad,” Phoenix told him, settling in the chair next to him. “But,” she whispered conspiratorially, leaning in close. “I won’t let him take your seat. How’s that?”
“Thank you.” Jake stood up slowly. His joints popped as he unfolded himself from the chair he had sat vigil in for the better part of five days and gave Bear one last longing look before leaving the room, Coyote following close behind. The pair was silent the entire way to the barracks, Jake lost in his head. He couldn’t understand why Bear had done what she had done. He wasn’t worth torture. No one here was. It didn’t make sense why Hazard had done what he had either. Why would a man throw away his life and career for a… terrorist? Risk everything for what? Money? A deluded sense of belonging?
Nothing made sense to him and he was too afraid to ask Javy or anyone else lest he had dreamed the whole thing. It still felt surreal having her back in his life. Sure Bear was unconscious and more than likely traumatized, but she was here, she was whole, and Jake desperately hoped that she’d be his when all was said and done.
They had made it back to the barracks and Jake sat down on his bed, biting his cheek. “Thanks for lookin’ out for me,” he mumbled at Coyote’s back, not caring if the other man heard him or not. He just had to get these words off his chest.
“It’s not a problem, Seresin. Trust me, you’re a pain in the ass, but you’re also my best friend, so I can’t be too mad,” Javy replied with a wave of his hand. “You don’t gotta thank me.”
Jake gave him an appreciative look, not trusting himself to speak his gratitude aloud. Javy buzzed around the room for a while longer as Jake flopped back on his bed and stared up at the ceiling. He was still desperate for answers. Hell, he had been searching for them since he had found out Bear’s fate weeks prior. Jake had been neck deep in evidence and documents as he worked with Bug, who now insisted he call her Priya, Fireball, and Flare, wherever she was, to find whoever had been responsible for this act of terrorism and after all of that, he still barely knew which way was up. But she was safe. Bear was here. That’s all he needed.
===
An hour or two later, Jake made his way down the halls to the infirmary to retake his place next to Bear’s bed. The halls were strangely empty as he walked along, there was none of the hustle and bustle that was characteristic of the Air Base, and to top it all off, it was quiet. He could distantly hear jets taking off in the background, and saw a few people he didn’t recognize, but that wasn’t unusual given the size of the base, so Jake thought nothing of it.
He continued on, waving to a few of the Seals he thought he knew and they returned the gesture. Jake felt refreshed, having showered and taken a brief nap in the time since he’d left Bear’s bedside, and he was ready to talk to her if she should be awake. If not, well, his phone was fully charged and he had the book that he was still working his way through, he could wait.
After all, he’d waited this long.
He entered the room, noting that neither Rooster not Phoenix were inside. The second chair wasn’t beside the bed, it was tucked in the corner, but this was all forgotten when he locked eyes with Bear. “Teddy…” he breathed, seeing her sat up in bed, looking out the window. Her skin was ghastly pale, eyes having lost their usual spark, but that was likely from everything she had been through, and he couldn’t blame her. “How are you?”
“I’ve been better.” Her words were short and clipped, almost like she didn’t want to talk to him at all. Which made no sense to him. Bear had been ready to say something to him in the conference room, just before she’d passed out. Why would she act like this?
Jake tried again. “I missed you, you know? I was a wreck, ask Bug or whoever else. They’ll tell you that I cried like a baby.” He was going for humor but was once again shot down in his attempts to talk to her.
“I didn’t ask you to do that. To mourn me.”
“I know you didn’t,” Jake said weakly. This wasn’t his Bear. It couldn’t be. But it looked like her, sounded like her, so this must be her. Why wouldn’t it be? “But I care about you, Teddy. I always have. You know this.”
Bear snorted, her eyes focused on a point over his shoulder. She couldn’t even stand to look at him. How could she? “Do I know that? Or do I just know what you're telling me?”
“Bear, I love you! I have been in love with you since the training exercise back on base! Why would I have lost sleep over you if I didn’t want you or care for you?” Jake was getting louder with each word and was practically screaming by the end. This didn’t make sense. Bear would never say this to him, would she?
But his pondering was cut off by a snort. “You honestly think I wanted you?” Bear rolled her eyes at him, fed up with his insistence.
“Bear please!” He was nearly pleading now, but that didn’t seem to change the iron stare of the woman in front of him. The woman who he had thought loved him. “You can’t be serious!”
“You were a distraction. A plaything. And do you know the worst part, Jake, do you know what that is? No? I’ll tell you. You. Weren’t. Worth. It.” Each word was punctuated by her stepping closer to him. “You were never worth it.”
“When did she stand up?” Jake thought distantly, but his attention was grabbed by the next words Bear spat at him.
“I should have left you to rot in the desert. Saved my own ass, protected my team like I swore to do. I didn’t sign up to defend little boys with no sense of self-preservation. You want to hear me say it again, Jake? You. Weren’t. Worth. Saving.”
Tears were now falling freely down his face as each word Bear threw at him found its mark deep in his heart. She was ruthless, cruel, and held no regard for his feelings. This couldn’t be what they had made her into. This wasn’t right. Did she really regret saving him? But FAK had told him that… No. It didn’t matter. Bear clearly didn’t feel the same as she had before the mission. How could she claim to have feelings and throw these words around so carelessly? “Fine. Whatever. So you regret saving my ass,” Jake fired back, his face red as tears streamed down his cheeks. “So why did you? Why did you save me if you were just ‘playing’ with me? Why?”
“Because you put yourself in danger and I was never going to hear the end of it if I just left you. My career would be over!” Bear’s grin was mocking as she shoved his own anger back in his face, laughing as she did. “I was a better leader before you, and I will be a great one without you. I hate to say it, but you were little more to me than a rock in my boot, Seresin. A pretty one, sure. But a pain nonetheless.”
“Bear…” One last try. One last plea for her to come to her senses. “Please.” Jake’s heart was shattering in his chest the longer he stood before Bear, raw emotion choking him as he tried to rearrange his thoughts to fit the picture she was painting for him. Bear was standing here as casually as she could, acting like her every word wasn’t single-handedly destroying every treasured moment of the two of them that he held.
“You loved a lie, Jake. I never cared. You should know what that’s like, Flyboy.” Her nickname for him, so callously thrown out, like she didn’t care, like she couldn’t bring herself to care. “You did this all the time. Out of the both of us, you have the reputation as a heart breaker.”
Jake physically recoiled from her. His chest had been filled with uncertainty since he’d entered the room, but now? Now it was almost as if Bear had reached into his chest and pulled his heart out, squeezing it in her hands. She didn’t care. She had never cared. It hit him like a sack of stones, dazing him and he pressed his palms against his eyes, trying to block it all out, trying to make sense of it all. Jake swallowed back bile, desperately scanning her face for any sign that she could be lying, but there was none. Just the blank face of the woman he loved staring back at him, and he could only hope that this was some kind of twisted prank meant to torment him.
Or maybe this was the new Bear. The one who didn’t care for him or his feelings. She was jaded, ruined by the men Hazard had led to her. A shell of the vibrant person he had fallen in love with. A fraction of the woman that had stolen his heart. Jake watched numbly as she climbed back into bed and turned away from him, feeling something slap at his arm. Twice more, this thing jabbed him in the shoulder until he shot up with a strangled gasp, the air in his lungs punching out like he’d gotten a boot to the chest.
Scrubbing his hands over his face, Jake blew out a breath. Bear hadn’t said what she did. That was a dream, an amalgamation of his worst fears coming to haunt him, to make him regret everything. The thing was, it had almost worked. But Bear was alive, and while he didn’t know how she was, Jake knew that she was nothing like the woman masquerading as Bear in his nightmare. She wasn’t capable of it. Not even after everything she had likely been through. Her “words” were in his head because he had dreamt it, not because they had actually been said.
“Jake? You good man? You look like you saw a ghost.” It was Coyote’s voice that pulled him from his mind, jolting him back to reality. The reality where he was sat on his bunk, rubbing sleep from his eyes
“Yeah. Just a wicked nightmare. When did I fall asleep?” Jake scarcely recognized his own voice with how ragged it sounded to his own ears.
“You crashed, like the second you lay down. You were just out,” Javy replied, eyeing his best friend suspiciously. “Are you okay?”
“I will be.”
Coyote didn’t look convinced, but he nodded anyways, stepping closer with the sandwich he’d snagged from the mess. “Eat something, man. Then go shower. You smell like nightmares and sweat. Bear isn’t gonna want to kiss your landfill smellin’ ass.”
Jake’s cheeks were puffed out from the mouthful of his sandwich. “Fuck you,” he tried to say through the bread and meat, but it came out in a muffled series of noises that just made Javy snort.
“Yeaaaah, she’s definitely not gonna want to put her face anywhere near that.” Javy was relishing in the indignant look Jake gave him, chuckling at the barely hidden laughter that had returned to his friend’s eyes.
“I know where you can put your face,” Jake shot back. “How about you kiss my ass and leave Bear the hell alone?” For the first time in weeks, Jake’s face had lit up. He was coming back into who he used to be, but underneath the sparkle in those now-bright green eyes lurked sadness at his own inability to help.
Javy smirked, throwing a towel at Jake’s head. “I would, but you’d like it too much.”
The blond man groaned. “Fucking Hell, Javy.”
“That’s my name, don’t wear it out!”
“I pity your girlfriend.”
“Low blow, man. Low blow.” Coyote had pretended to stumble back, clutching his chest and staring up at Jake like the man had stabbed him. “You leave my honey outta this.”
The two men stared at each other for a moment before bursting into laughter. It felt normal. Like the two of them were healing, like the world was right once more. It took them both a while to calm down, the silence in the room punctuated with small snorts of laughter and the occasional wheeze as they both tried to catch their breath. “Please. You’re tellin’ me that she wouldn’t drag your ass?”
“She already does man. Chewed me out for yellin’ at you too. Called you an ass, but told me to be nice,” Javy replied, wiping tears from his eyes. “God I love her.”
Jake grinned at his best friend. “You gonna wife her up anytime soon? Or do I have to use my charm to show T how it’s done?”
“Bullshit. You got lucky with Bear. She don’t dig white boys, you know that.”
“Fair enough. Fair enough.” Jake lifted his palms in mock-surrender. “I know when I’m beat.”
“Mmhmm. Bear’s got you whipped, man.” Javy watched as Jake’s face softened. His eyes had brightened and he sat up a little straighter. It was like watching a flower perk up after a rainstorm, and Javy knew that his best friend was in love with the bedridden Navy Seal a few buildings away. “Pretty sure she’s had your balls since day one.”
“I might’ve handed them to her, I honestly don’t know.”
The black man snorted. “Alright, alright. I told Bradshaw that I’d get your pasty simp ass into the shower and back so he could go eat, let’s go.” He clapped his hands, grinning as Jake hauled himself up with a groan. “C’mon. Move it.”
“I’m comin’. I’m comin’. Calm your tits dude,” Jake said, rolling his eyes as he grabbed his shower stuff and a clean set of clothes.
“Please tell me that isn’t how you talk dirty to Bear… Honey’s gonna be so disappointed in her if you caught her with lines like that.” Coyote shoved him towards the showers, following him. “Now, I’d wait. But I’ve got to call my mama in…” he trailed off, checking his watch. “12 minutes. And if you’re gonna be an angsty shit, I’d remember that you have a hungry Chicken in the same room as your girl. So move it, or lose her.”
The shit-eating grin on Coyote’s face was enough to make Jake snort as he passed by his friend. “Go on then. I can shower by myself.”
“Awww. Who’s a big boy?” Javy replied with a loud cackle of a laugh at the face Jake pulled. “Okay man. See you in a bit.”
“Later asshole. You know where to find me,” Jake yelled back, flipping Javy off as he undressed.

Stepping under the cold spray of the shower shocked Jake back to his dream. Bear couldn’t possibly feel that way, could she? This was the thought that raced through his mind as Jake stood stock-still, feeling the water sluicing down his body. Bear had made that decision for a reason. Wracked with guilt in those initial days after learning Bear’s fate, he had sought out FAK in help of understanding what had happened.
FAK’s tone had been gentle, the medic having more of an understanding of Bear’s motivations. They had sat with him as they restitched his leg, talking the whole time. Jake had learned a lot from this conversation; Bear had cared enough about him to come after him. She had put herself in harm’s way to save him for a reason. FAK hadn’t known what that reasoning was, and they didn’t care to speculate, but the medic had assured him that it must have been significant.
And as Jake stood, rinsing soap from his body, that reason hit him. It slammed into his chest quick and fast. In all honesty, it felt like launching from a carrier; a jolt followed by a lurch that moved through both you and the aircraft. It was indescribable to someone who had never experienced it, but Jake knew. This time he understood why Bear had risked herself for him. He didn’t like it, but he understood. It was because she loved him, it made no sense otherwise. So she had to, Bear had to love him back.
FAK had known but couldn’t say, Bug knew, hell, Jake was certain that his entire team knew. But were those feelings the truth, or just imagined? There was only one way to find out. The mere thought had him shutting the shower off abruptly, standing stock-still for a moment to evaluate what exactly he was planning on doing. He would confess first, she couldn’t because of her rank, but he could say something.
Jake could confess his love.
He screwed his eyes shut, shaking his head. This was insane. But Jake knew that taking risks was part of his job, it was partially who he was. So he threw on clean pants and a hoodie, redoing his shoes before racing off through the locker room and across base, all the way to Bear’s bedside.
It was always better late than never. Right?

Random headcannon or thought.
Bradley and Jake starts dating and BOTH Iceman and Maverick gives Hangman an individual shovel talk. However, instead of being intimidated, Jake just smiles and says, "I'm glad the big chicken have you in his corner, sir, he's very lucky to have you. And from the stories he tells me? He knows that he is."
Maverick and Iceman are stunned, but just nods and dismisses him.
Throughout the next couple weeks as more people find out about their relationship, more people from the Dagger Squad gives Hangman the shovel talk. Some even implying that he's lucky to have Bradley and doesn't deserve him. Hangman simply nods and agrees.
Bradley doesn't know about the shovel talks.
Not until Coyote gives Bradley one of the harshest talks in the world. That he better not hurt Jake, again.
Bradley and Jake dated a couple years ago, but Bradley left Jake heartbroken with no explanation because he had issues. In the process, giving Jake his callsign and even isolating him from his peers. Jake did nothing to deserve that. It took Bradley a while to realize the damage he'd done, and he's spending every moment with Jake making up for it.
Javy also tells Bradley to get his friends to lay-off Jake. Bradley is confused before Javy explains how everyone has been giving Jake shovel talks and implying he doesn't deserve Bradley.
Bradley is horrified because if they knew the whole story it was him who didn't deserve Jake. He shut that down harshly.
Jake calms him down by saying, "It's good that you got a flock of birds at your wing, Roo."
But Bradley shoots back, "They're your team too Jake, they shouldn't be acting like this."
Later on, the whole team finds out the whole story and they feel conflicted about how to treat Bradley and Jake. They do feel guilty for making assumptions about they relationship.
Jake contemplates what happens and although he is happy that Bradley have people watching his back. He is bitter that his reputation made so many people doubt his commitment to Bradley, and how so many people made assumptions that weren't true.
A part of him is jealous that Bradley had a family who would stand behind him. Father-figures, uncle-figures, best friends/siblings, teammates, and more. He's happy for Bradley, but to him, watching Bradley interact with them is like watching them through a wall of water. Everything is tinted and blurred differently, and there will always be something separating him from what Bradley considers normal.
At least, no matter what happens, he always had Javy on his 6.
-----
(Eventual happy ending where they're all found family and stuff and misunderstandings are cleared, and some people who gave Jake the shovel talk gave Bradley the shovel talk.
Unexpectedly, someone who follows Javy in giving Bradley the shovel talk is Cyclone.)
