Sitting at your vanity (if you could even call a plastic set of drawers with a handheld mirror duct taped to the back a vanity) you briefly thought to yourself that you should be excited… and you were, for the most part. Today was one of those days that marked the start of a new chapter. You’d been lucky (or unlucky, depending on how you looked at it) to have had a few of these already… first opening your acceptance letter into college, then med school, and now you were getting ready to find out where you had been matched for residency.
The excitement and nerves you were feeling were subdued because really the only thing you could focus on was the fact that the only person you wanted here wasn’t… and you didn’t know where he was. He could have been on a ship halfway across the world or at a base a handful of hours away but in the end it didn’t really matter much… he wasn’t here, and that was just part of the deal. You knew what this was long before it got to this point, and that point was only accentuated by the floppy haired boy walking into your dorm just as you stood from your spot in front of the window to change.
“Well, don’t you just look darling,” he teased and on another day you might have laughed… struck a pose and had a witty comeback, something about ratty college tees and soffe shorts being on all the runways these days, but it wasn’t another day. It was today and your future was hinging on something written in an envelope waiting for you across campus and this boy wasn’t the one you wanted teasing you today.
You undressed and stood with your back to him, a silent request for him to help zip your dress and he obliged just as quietly. There was an expiration date on you and Matt, this much you knew… but the way his fingers trailed down your arm and the lingering question he’d been asking all month told you he wasn’t on the same page. He had a vision for his life, one that very much included you and perhaps you felt a little guilty for continuing to keep him in your orbit but the more logical part of you reminded you that the vision you had for your life had been set in stone long before he showed up. He saw residency right here in California, with you by his side. He saw you switching your area of focus to general medicine, something less demanding to create room for starting a family, something you’d do within the next few years. You hadn’t had the heart yet to tell him that sounded like your own personal hell.
Your vision was Boston, in a cutthroat surgical residency program before moving on to whatever hospital offered the best fellowship for your chosen specialty… that was the one area of your life you’d yet to nail down. Most of your peers pursuing the surgical route knew what they wanted to focus on, some vying for cardio or neuro, others trauma or general but not you. That was the one thing you were leaving up to fate, deciding to instead let yourself make that decision a few years into residency… and if that fellowship happened to come along where the boy you missed more than anything was stationed? Well, you wouldn’t be one to complain. The vision didn’t include Matt, it never did.
And so, as you turned to face him with a tight smile you wanted more than anything to tell him this was over, that it would be best to head into residency as individuals but then you saw that look on his face and you couldn’t do it right now… not right before finding out whether or not you were getting everything you’d spent the last eight years working towards (seven for you, but you wouldn’t point that out to him anymore than you already had). You’d wait until after, even if that meant walking into the ceremony with someone you had already decided you wouldn’t be seeing after today.
“Hey, did you guys get settled okay?” you asked your parents as you set your bag down on the table and exchanged quick hugs. You’d already seen them this morning when they’d arrived and they’d decided to give you a little space to get ready.
“Your mother has taken photos of about a dozen things at the hotel, taking notes for our upcoming remodel which… I was just informed of this morning,” your dad said and you laughed. Matt said his hellos before going off to find his own parents and you rolled your eyes at the look your dad fixed you with. “He’s still around?”
“Oh hush,” you replied. Your purse started ringing and you fished around lip gloss and old flashcards to find your phone, immediately feeling more settled at the voice on the other end.
“Hey you,” Jake said and you actually let out a sigh of relief. “How are you feeling?”
“Oh me? You know, cool as a cucumber. Not freaking out at all,” you answered with a small laugh and he just chuckled.
“Of course not, not like there’s anything big going on today.”
“Definitely not, just a normal day around here,” you said.
“I just wanted to call and tell you to breathe, because you forget to do that sometimes-”
“I do not-”
“Yes you do, and to remind you that no matter where you end up you’re going to be just fine.”
“Thank you,” you said softly. “I know you can’t say where you are but I hope you’re flying safe today,” you added.
“Always do, sweetheart. I’ll call you tonight, yeah?”
“You better.” you said with a smile as you hung up and put your phone on silent just as the announcer gave the two minute warning. You could practically feel the rising tension in the room, a mix of nervous excitement and pure dread. So many fates contained within tiny envelopes and as you picked yours up you found the whole notion of this rather silly. You felt bad for anyone who got news they didn’t want today, having to find out in a room full of people celebrating and you prayed to a god you weren’t sure you even believed in you wouldn’t be one of them.
“I think I’m going to, uh…” you started, looking at your parents and then back at the envelope in your hand. “I’m going to just take a minute and open it myself, if that’s okay?” you asked hesitantly and they nodded.
“Whatever you want, honey,” your mom replied and you turned around as the announcer told everyone to open them. You took a deep breath, because you did forget to breathe in times of stress, and with shaking hands practically ripped the envelope apart to pull out a folded piece of paper… a piece of paper that you hoped contained two specific words.
Massachusetts General.
Your shaking hands persisted as you read and reread what was right in front of you. Massachusetts General. You blinked and read again, did it really say that? Massachusetts General.
“Oh my god-” you started as you turned around to show your parents with the paper facing outwards but they were gone. Really they’d only stepped a few feet to the side but they, and everyone else in the room, may as well have disappeared because all you could focus on was him, standing right there in front of you in his dress whites looking so proud as he read the words in your hands that quickly fell to the floor in shock. “Jake?” you asked so quietly, your mind still not catching up but it didn’t matter, in an instant you were launching yourself at him and he caught you with ease as you wrapped around him.
“Hey you,” he repeated his words from just a few minutes ago on the phone and you let out a sound that was mixed with a laugh and a sob as you clung to him. “You did it, I knew you would.”
“What the hell are you doing here?” you asked as you pulled away slightly to look down at him and he just beamed up at you.
“You didn’t really think I’d miss this, did you?” he replied and you just smiled, but it was quickly wiped away as you heard someone clear their throat behind you and you didn’t need to look to know who it was as you slid down Jake’s body to the floor and turned to see Matt, who was looking at the pair of you skeptically.
“Jake’s here,” he said, trying to muster some kind of enthusiasm but it fell flat, “yay.” You stifled a chuckle as you looked at him expectantly, “I matched here, what about you?” You knew what was coming as you took the paper your dad held out for you and Matt nodded softly when he read it. “I thought we talked about staying here for residency?” You didn’t miss the way Jake scoffed behind you, clearly disgusted that that was the first thing out of his mouth.
“You talked about it, Matt… I was always clear about my goals.” you said firmly. “But this is what we’ve both been working for. Congratulations, really,” you said, wrapping him in a tight but quick hug. “Go, celebrate with your family. I’ll see you at the party later.” you finished, nudging him off and  when you turned around Jake was giving you the most unimpressed look.
“Don’t even, I will not be seeing him at the party later, if you must know.”
“Is that so?” he asked with a smirk and you rolled your eyes as he chuckled.
“Congratulations, sweetheart,” your mom said, pulling you in for a hug.
“We’re so proud of you,” your dad added, pressing a kiss to the top of your head and you went to respond, to thank them for everything they’ve done for you but they didn’t give you the chance. “Go celebrate and spend time together, and have fun at the party tonight.”
“What? No, you guys flew all this way… I thought we could go out for dinner-”
“Hush, you two have some catching up to do,” your mom replied. “Besides, I think whatever celebrations you get up to tonight are best kept from us,” she added with a knowing smile and you tried to fight your own.
“We’ll do breakfast, just the four of us like old times… but we won’t wake you too early,” your dad said and you watched as Jake gave them hugs before they slipped away.
When they left he turned to look at you, all pride and adoration, and you flushed under his gaze as you gave him a look that said what? “You fucking did it, Jupiter.”
“I fucking did it,” you replied, your laughter bright and uncontrollable as he lifted you from the ground and spun you around.
Tumblr media
“How’d he take it?” Jake asked as you entered your dorm, and you chuckled as you took him in, sprawled out across your bed, one leg hanging off the side because he simply didn’t fit.
“About as well as could be expected,” you said and he laughed as he sat up.
“So… not well at all?” He laughed again when you nodded. “Tell me about this party we’re going to.”
“It’s pretty standard, I expect things will go as they always do with a campus party… just a little more celebratory with a slight drinking to numb the pain vibe from some.”
He nodded, “all your friends got what they were hoping for?”
“For the most part… a few didn’t get exactly what they wanted but that’s kind of how it goes… matching is about a little bit of hard work and a shit ton of luck.”
“So, I’m guessing dress whites aren’t the vibe for tonight?” he asked, watching as you discarded your jewelry onto your desk and you chuckled as you turned and walked towards him, stopping in between his legs.
“Not at all,” you said with a shake of your head and you laughed again as he pouted and rested his hands on the backs of your thighs. “But they were a nice touch, you look very official and handsome,” you added on, hoping to turn his frown upside down.
And you did, he looked up at you with that same look he’d given you in the event hall. “I know you know this, but I really am so fucking proud of you, J,” he said and you softly smiled, feeling crimson creep onto your cheeks and you quickly diverted, trying to break some of the intimacy of the moment by pulling the hat from his head and plopping it on your own.
“Well, you should be, cowboy,” you said, stepping back and grabbing two beers from the mini fridge that doubled as a nightstand, handing one to him and he looked at you expectantly as you both cracked them open. “Because your best friend got into the fucking brig,” you said as you clinked the cans together and he let out a few cheers before taking a generous gulp.
He stayed by your side as you got ready together, only engaging in a few quarrels due to the lack of space that only got smaller when your roommate Katie showed up, and you couldn’t help your amusement as the two of them got on each other's last nerves. Their relationship was very akin to that of siblings, they’d scream at each other through the phone on facetimes when the other was pulling too much of your attention and on the rare visits Jake managed she’d spend the whole trip pouting about how no one else existed when he was here.
“Are we not going to this party together, Katie?” you said, interrupting her latest spiel about Jake’s evilness, as she put it, and she held her hands up in surrender as you laughed. She put on a good show but you knew she liked having Jake around, it meant she got to see more of her favorite version of you… party Jupiter. And party Jupiter was in full effect as you strolled down the street lined with fraternity houses. The parties you attended these days were typically on the other side of campus and not quite as rowdy, you couldn’t even remember the last time you’d been down here but it had been negotiated that the frats held parties for the med students this year, to give you all one more truly college party before everyone went their separate ways into a new journey of adulthood.
“You’ve been here before, right?” you asked Jake as you watched him mix you a drink and he nodded.
“Mmhm, your third year of undergrad,” he answered and you snorted.
“Oh god, yeah,” you briefly reminisced on that party, one with no cause, and the shocked look on Jake’s face most of the night. As it turned out, you had actually been understating just how much Stanford kids like to party that day on the phone all those years ago. You mingled with Jake in tow, socializing with friends you hadn’t seen since the beginning of the year to due rotations and interviews across the country, and really emphasizing the fact that you wouldn’t see each other for a number of years after tonight in your drunken states much to Jake’s amusement.
You weren’t much of an emotional drunk but that didn’t seem to be the case tonight… Probably something about the finality of it all, going from college to med school didn’t seem like a huge transition for you because you stayed in the same place, but this was different. After graduation next week you’d be packing up and moving across the country, to somewhere that couldn’t be more different than where you were, and you would officially be a doctor.
Jake watched as you let loose, cackling with friends about professors or that one time you stole a dozen mice because you couldn’t bear the thought of them being used for research (and you maintained that you’d been in the right each time it was brought up). The last time he’d come to visit you’d been so entrenched in your coursework he actually became worried, watching you study for hours on end from your bed as he realized this is what your life was. You’d always done a good job at completing everything before he arrived so you could focus on the fun but that visit just wasn’t the case… There were exams to prep for and applications to be sent out and interviews to be scheduled, and all he could do was half-heartedly read a book he’d plucked from your shelf about internal medicine and force you to come up for air every now and again.
But this time was completely different, there was nothing to worry about because you were done. You’d gotten to the end of your journey here at Stanford and were in that blissful reprieve period where there truly was nothing to fret over, and it simultaneously warmed Jake’s heart and broke it to see. On one hand, you were finally getting a true break after years of achingly hard work… but on the other that break would only last a few days before you went into a tizzy packing to move cross country and start your residency. He knew you were happy, and that you would be happy in Boston but he also knew things were only about to get harder, and that a few days of true relief weren’t enough.
Granted, this wasn’t how you felt, despite the fact that as you downed your drink and chatted with Katie about her upcoming move to Nashville you had no idea this was going through his head… you felt nothing but joy knowing that you got to spend the next few days with Jake before diving into your future. Residency is what you feel you’d waited your whole life for. You did the hard stuff, you laid the foundation and stuffed your nose in a book for years and now you were finally going to be able to do.
“I think I might actually miss these parties,” you said as you sat down by the edge of the pool with a sigh, unclasping your heels and actually moaning in relief as you dipped your feet into the cool water and Jake chuckled beside you.
“I find that shocking considering that after that one your third year you said you never wanted to set foot on this block again.”
“I’ve grown, things have changed,” you protested which coaxed another laugh from him. “God, I can’t believe I’m leaving this place soon. It almost feels like just yesterday I showed up here with nothing but a suitcase and a dream. And you! Mr. Top Gun graduate,” you added, nudging him playfully.
“Don’t let Coyote hear you, he’ll bust my chops even more than he already has.”
“I miss Coyote,” you said, leaning your head on his shoulder. “Are you going home for Christmas this year?” you asked and this took him slightly by surprise, considering it was spring and he didn’t expect you to be looking forward to anything other than residency.
“I don’t think so… the way it lines up I’d have to fly in on Christmas Eve and leave the day after… I think the short trips make my mom sadder than me not going home at all.”
“They do,” you said. “For my parents too. I don’t know why but they do. What do you think about me coming to you this year? If you’re on base.”
“I think that sounds perfect,” he replied, turning to press a kiss on the top of your head. “I’m sorry I can’t stay for graduation,” he said and you lifted your head to shake it, waving your hand dismissively.
“Truthfully I don’t care about graduation, it’s more for my parents and yours. This was the important one,” you replied, giving him a warm smile. “I still can’t believe you pulled off surprising me. How long have you known you’d be able to make it?”
“Since you first told me the day,” he answered and your eyes widened as you hit his chest.
“You asshole! You made me think you couldn’t come and this was your plan all along? I was really sad, you know.”
He let out a loud laugh, “yeah, I know. But it was worth it! The look on your face was priceless.”
“You’re unbelievable,” you muttered.
“Had to get you back for my tap out ceremony somehow,” he pointed out and you sighed, because he did have a point.
“That’s fair. Though, I could argue that it was a surprise for me as well, mine was not premeditated.”
“To-mato to-mato,” he replied. “So, when do you make the big move?”
“Well, tomorrow you’ll be helping me scout apartments, tough part is I’ll have to pick a place sight unseen so we’re going to have to be very thorough in our search and then hopefully I’ll be out there within three weeks… My program starts in four.”
“Unless a last minute deployment pops up, I think I can meet you out there… help you get settled and all that.”
“Really?” you asked, eyes wide and full of hope as you beamed up at him and he chuckled, knowing you were definitely drunk right now. “Seeing you twice in one month? I don’t think we’ve gotten that lucky since we were teenagers.”
“Well, I don’t know about that,” he said with a suggestive raise of his eyebrows and you were startled by your own laugh, not expecting the turn in conversation.
“That’s right, forgot I was talking to Hangman, eternal stud.” you joked. Briefly you thought joking about it should sting, and deep down maybe it did a little, but this was the first time it’s come up and the sting wasn’t the first thing you noticed.
“You haven’t done so bad for yourself either,” he said and you just gave him a deadpan glare.
“Really? You think Matt was making me feel lucky every time?” you asked and he went through the same range of emotions. He thought it should hurt, and it did somewhere deep down, but it wasn’t the first thing he noticed.
“He wasn’t? Then what was the point?” he exclaimed and you hid your face in embarrassment.
“Oh, I don’t know! Truthfully it spiraled and I didn’t have time for anything else so…” you trailed off before letting out a groan. “Oh god, I’m a terrible person.”
“Now, how did we end up there?” he asked, brows furrowing in confusion at your statement.
“I knew all along I’d dump him right about now, how awful to not do it so much sooner.”
He shrugged, “maybe… but knowing you he did get lucky every time so don’t feel too bad. Broken heart or not he reached the mountaintop, good for him.”
“That’s a better, if not slightly twisted, way of looking at things.” you mused, resting your head on his shoulder again.
“Tired?” he asked and you nodded. “Don’t quite have the stamina of an undergrad anymore?”
“Shut up,” you said. “It’s been an emotional day.”
“Wanna go home?” he asked and you nodded, allowing yourself to be pulled up and you awkwardly shook your leg over the pool to rid yourself of excess water, to which he just shook his head in amusement.
You spent the walk back towards your dorm lost in conversation, giggling about nothing in particular and squealing when he picked you up and tossed you over his shoulder, “Jake! I’m too drunk, don’t make me hurl,” you laughed but he didn’t seem to care, carrying you like it was nothing until suddenly you were on the move again, sliding down to the ground with Jake’s firm hands on your waist to guide you. Your brows furrowed in confusion when you noticed you weren’t at your dorm but instead in front of a shiny car.
“I love Katie,” he started, but was cut off by the questioning look you gave him, “really, I do, but you didn’t really think I was crashing in your dorm, did you?” he asked and he did have a point… the last time he visited she was on rotation so he crammed himself onto her tiny bed and complained all the next day… there simply wasn’t anywhere for him to be this time around. “I have a hotel room a few blocks away, do you want to come stay with me? Or I can walk you back to your room,” he added the last part a little hurriedly and you chuckled, you thought you just caught a glimpse of a younger Jake… nervous and not wanting to overstep.
“Are you kidding me?” you asked, gesturing towards the door and he was quick to open it for you, “a night away from that thing they call a bed sounds like heaven.”
“And here I thought you just wanted to spend more time with me,” he said after walking around and getting in the driver’s side.
“Well, that’s certainly part of it… just not the main part,” you teased and he shook his head as he navigated towards his hotel and you looked over at him in amusement when you entered the parking lot. “Very fancy, Mr. Seresin,” you said as he opened the door for you and he extended his hand which you gladly took.
“Shut up and come on,” he replied and you did as you were told. Following him through the hotel and to the elevator, where they opened to reveal a cozy and beautifully decorated rooftop bar and you just looked over at him, eyes wide and questioning. “Tonight was a goodbye to your college life, and I thought what better way to end it than here, welcoming in this next chapter?”
“Jake…” you started, the lingering alcohol in your system still present enough to have you feeling a little more emotional than usual. You sat at a cozy loveseat positioned in front of a firepit and thanked the waiter when he brought over your cocktails, gin and tonic for you and something whiskey based for Jake.
“To you, Jupiter. You’ve worked so hard the past seven years, and you never once wavered when things got hard. You are nothing short of incredible, and being here with you right now, marking this occasion… it means a lot to me, and I’ll never stop being proud of you.” he said, and you felt your eyes well with tears that mirrored his own.
“Stop, you can’t cause then I’ll really lose it,” you warned, laughing softly as you wiped your cheeks. “Thank you… not just for saying that but for being you, and for being here. I was a wreck all morning and then I turned around and saw you and everything felt… settled. You being here means more than you know.” you said and you clinked your glasses together before taking a sip. “I’m really proud of us.” you said added a few moments of silence. “Do you remember the day we decided to break up?”
“Vividly,” he chuckled and you couldn’t help but laugh too.
“God, we were so young, with such big dreams… and going into it all so devastated… I wish we could go back and tell them it wouldn’t be for nothing, that we made it.”
“We did make it didn’t we?” he asked and you nodded, a smile creeping onto your face. He reached out to tuck a strand of hair behind your ear and you didn’t know if it was the weighty realization that seven years ago you broke each other’s hearts to pursue the dreams you’d just achieved or the alcohol or just the fact that you simply wanted to but you leaned forward and let your lips brush against his. Soft and questioning but he pressed forward and captured you in a searing kiss. Years of pent up emotion and love spilling out, and you smiled when he chased your lips as you pulled away.
You didn’t need to say anything, didn’t need to acknowledge any of it. You both knew it didn’t change anything, you both might have made it but only to the next stepping stone… it still wasn’t the time. You kissed him once more before scooting closer and resting your head on his shoulder, his arm wrapping around your waist as you just enjoyed the moment for what it was. A celebration of what was to come.

“What happened?” Jake asked, out of breath as he ran down the corridor. He had just fallen asleep when he got a frantic call from his ex wife. He could hardly make out the words she was saying to him, but he managed to understand that she was taking their daughter to the ER. It was like a hot knife in Jake’s chest as he sprinted out of bed and broke nearly all traffic laws to get to the hospital.
Y/N’s was shaking like a leaf in the wind, as she took a step away from the large window where she had been watching doctors and nurses tend to her child, “I-I don’t know,” Her voice was thick with tears, her eyes and nose red. The only thing she wore was a nightgown and a jacket over it, “Ella, sh-she has had this cough and it hasn’t gone away and she started complaining about not being able to breathe and then. . .” Y/N sucked in a deep breath, trying to slow her heart rate down, “There was so much blood.”
“Shh, shh,” Jake pulled her into his chest, cradling the back of her head. A loud sob racked through her body, and Jake held her tighter, “Let’s go sit down, okay? I’ll get you some tea and a snack.”
Y/N nodded her head, and let Jake guide her through the hospital to the waiting room. Her body felt heavy as she collapsed in the chair. The only image flashing through her mind was of her daughter standing in the doorway of her room with blood all over her shirt. Y/N closed her eyes, rubbing them with the heel of her hand. Ella had been complaining about her chest hurting and this persistent cough that would not go away. Y/N just thought it was her being sick with the common cold.
“Here,” Jake said, holding a foam cup and a granola bar out to his ex-wife. Y/N gingerly took the items and Jake sat down in the chair next to her. The tension stretched over them as they both sat in silence, Y/N nibbling on the granola bar and Jake fiddling with his fingers. The last time they had sat this close to one another was when they were in couples therapy. Most of the time, if they had to sit near each other, they would put one of the kids in the middle.
“I’m sorry I called you so early,” Y/N mumbled, breaking the silence.
Jake looked at her, a small frown on his face, “I’d rather you did than wait until morning. I know you hate doctors.”
“Had to get over that this past year.”
A year. It had been a whole year since Jake signed those papers, and Y/N had walked out of his life. It had been a year of utter misery for the both of them, but their pride got in the way of being able to admit that. It had been a year of awkward conversations while dropping the kids off at each other’s houses. A year of avoiding each other at Dagger family events. A year of tears and aching hearts when the other mentioned going out on a date. A year of suffering because of one mistake.
“Well, Ella is my daughter,” Jake said, sitting up in his seat, “And I am going to be here for my daughter, no matter what time it is.”
They both agreed in the divorce to keep things as civil as they possibly could for the sake of the children. Jake didn’t fight Y/N on custody, only asking that he gets them on the weekends. Y/N still allowed Jake to come over as often as he wanted to, and he was at the house most nights. Jake hated going home to that small on-base house that was nothing compared to the beautiful craftsman they had bought together after Eli was born. Y/N let Jake stay for dinner, and help with bath time, before getting the kids to bed. It was always awkward when he’d leave for the night; both of them wanting to ask the other if they would stay.
“I know,” Y/N swallowed, “I just. . . I don’t know.”
The silence stretched back over them. The lobby of the emergency room was surprisingly busy for an early Tuesday morning. Drunkards were waiting to get fluids to sober up. A couple who looked like they were about to have a baby sat in the corner, the man coaxing his wife through breathing exercises. A sad looking elderly man with a deep frown etched on his face. A mother holding her child to her chest, soothing his hiccups. Y/N longed to be able to be back with Ella, but the doctors had ushered her out of the room when Ella quit breathing.
Y/N was lost in her thoughts when a voice called out to her, “Y/N.”
“Miles,” She stood up from her chair, “W-what’s going on? Is Ella alright?”
“You’re my daughter’s doctor?” Jake said, eyeing Miles up and down.
Y/N shot a glare in Jake’s direction. Now was not the time to get in a pissing match.
“I am,” Miles said, brushing off Jake’s comment, “I was working a round in the ER when she came in. I’m also lead pediatric surgeon.”
Rolling his eyes, Jake muttered, “Of course you are.”
“Anyway,” Miles continued, “We ran some tests on Ella, a simple blood test and then an X-Ray,” He paused for a moment, trying to gather his thoughts. Y/N’s hand reached out for Jake’s on instinct, squeezing it, “Her blood test came back showing signs of abnormal cell growth, and there’s a small mass on the right lower lobe of her lung.”
It was as if Miles had slugged Y/N in the chest. She sat down, afraid her knees were going to give out if she were still standing. The words Miles and Jake were sharing might as well have been a world away, as none of it was making sense to her.
“How did this happen?” Y/N asked, her voice felt foreign to her as she looked up at the men, “How did I miss this?”
“We don’t really know,” Miles said softly, “Sometimes, the body just creates abnormal cells. Lung cancer in kids looks totally different than lung cancer in adults. It’s not your fault.”
Y/N nodded her head and looked down at her hands, “So what do we do?”
“We’re gonna discharge her for today, and send you home with some medicine to help suppress the cough. Then we’re gonna get you set up with an oncology appointment, run some more tests and we’ll go from there.”
“Can we see her?” Jake asked.
“Of course,” Miles nodded his head, and told them Ella’s room number.
Jake sat down next to Y/N, letting out a deep sigh. This was the last thing he thought was going to happen when Y/N called him at 2:30 in the morning. The only person Jake knew to have lung cancer was his grandfather, and it was a bitter end to his life. Hospitals, and oxygen masks, and not being able to do anything but lay in a bed and wait for death to come. It wasn’t what he imagined for his little girl. Not in this lifetime.
“You never told me what happened between you and Miles?” Jake asked, looking over at Y/N.
She let out a sigh, stretching her arms out and flexing her fingers, “Just didn’t work out.”
Truth was, Y/N was so irrevocably in love with Jake, that being with Miles was only going to cause more harm than good. Miles had been the perfect guy; he was respectful, kind, he cared about Y/N’s kids and treated them with respect as well. He also loved her, flaws and all. And that was the issue. Miles loved Y/N more than Y/N could ever love him. It broke her heart to have to break up with him, but she couldn’t let him continue to think that something was going to happen.
Jake hummed, “I thought you two were going to get-”
“Can we not talk about my love life right now?” Y/N snapped, looking at her ex, “Now is not the time.”
“I’m sorry,” Jake apologized, “She’s going to be okay, ya know?” Y/N’s eyes filled with unshed tears, “She’s strong and healthy, just like you.”
Y/N nodded her head, “I know. It’s just not what I want for her. I hate this!”
Jake wrapped his arm around Y/N’s shoulder and brought her into him. He hated seeing her cry and in the past year, he had seen her shed a lot of tears. Over the years, Y/N got better at stuffing her emotions down. It was hard raising kids with a husband who flew jets at supersonic speed into dangerous territories. She had to become both mentally and physically strong to withstand the months of Jake being gone and her left to raise the kids. Now, those emotions came crumbling down.
“Let’s go back and see her, okay?” Jake asked, pressing a kiss to Y/N’s temple. She wordlessly nodded her head and Jake stood up, helping her to her feet.
They rode the elevator in silence up to the pediatric floor where Ella was. When the doors opened they were met with bright colored green and blue walls with various animals painted on them. Children were just starting to wake up on the floor, as nurses and aids went into their rooms with colorful cups of medicine. Some parents had spent the night, sleeping on a cot next to their child’s bed, other parents were just arriving with cups of coffee and tired looks on their faces. Y/N was surprised at how warm the unit felt. That was the one thing she hated about hospitals. They always felt so cold and lonely. But the pediatric ward was filled with bright smiles, and laughter.
Jake knocked on the door to Ella’s room, which had a painted unicorn on it, “Knock, knock,” He said, slowly opening the door.
“Daddy!” Ella exclaimed. Jake rushed over to the bed, and hugged his little girl tightly. He wasn’t sure if it was because of her illness, but she felt smaller in his arms than she had ever felt, “I missed you.”
“Missed you too Ella Bella,” Jake said softly, and placed a kiss on her temple, “How are you feeling?” He helped her lay back in bed, and covered her with a blanket. Y/N silently walked to the otherside of Ella’s bed as Jake sat down on the small mattress.
“I’m tired,” Ella yawned, “Nurse Becky gave me strawberry jell-o and Auntie Val saw me when I had my pictures done!”
“She did?” Y/N asked, trying her best to sound happy. She made a mental note to contact her best friend and tell her how thankful she was for her visit to Ella. If there was one thing about Val Machado, it was that she was going to care of her friends’ kids. Val even said once the Seresin kids were basically her kids and vice versa.
“Yes! She gave me a unicorn sticker! Like the one on the door!” Ella held up the sticker that was on her hospital gown.
“That’s beautiful baby,” Jake said, his green eyes full of love as he brushed his hand over her cheek.
“Daddy,” Ella said softly, “Can I go home now?”
“Yes Elles,” Jake nodded his head, “We’re gonna go home. You, me, and Mommy.”
A weird feeling went through Y/N’s chest when Jake said they were all going home. She tried her best to ignore it, knowing that Jake was only saying words to comfort their daughter. When a nurse came in, Y/N and Jake excused themselves to go sign some paperwork and set up the next doctor’s appointment. They sat on opposite sides of a round table, Jake filling out insurance forms while Y/N sighed Ella’s discharge forms.
“You shouldn’t have told her that you were coming home,” Y/N muttered.
Jake furrowed his eyebrows, “Why? I am coming home with you guys.”
“Jake,” Y/N sighed, setting the pen down.
“No,” Jake answered, “I am not just gonna go back to base and pretend like everything is fine and dandy. Cause it’s not fine and dandy, Y/N. Our child is sick.”
“I know,” Y/N’s voice became thick with tears, “I know this, Jake.”
“Then don’t push me away,” Jake sounded defeated, “Not now. Not when we need each other the most.”
Y/N let out a shaky sigh, “I just don’t know if I can forgive you.”
“You don’t have to,” Jake said, getting up from his chair and going over to kneel in front of his wife. He grabebd her hands in his, running his thumbs over the back of them, “You don’t have to forgive me now or ever. But you need someone to rely on and be there just as much as I need someone to rely on and be there. This isn’t going to be easy. . . but we are the only ones who will understand what we are going through. We need each other right now.”
Y/N bit her lip and nodded her head, “Okay.”
“Okay?” Jake asked, his eyes full of hope and longing.
“Okay,” Y/N said again, sniffling, “Let’s go take our baby home.”

Crashing In: Chapter 4
Tumblr media
Synopsis: After moving to San Diego to get a fresh start and live closer to your older brother Bob, you had no idea what was going to happen. However when you end up living with one of his squadmates, things definitely start to turn around for the better.
Pairing: Jake Seresin x reader (Bob’s sister)
c/w:none I think unless you count jealous Jake, & a very flirty Rooster
w/c: 2.8k
Chapter 4: Meet the Squad
Waking up in your fully furnished room was a sigh of relief. Now you could actually focus on finding a new job. The big problem however, was you had no idea what you wanted to do. Your last job had worked you to the bone practically, and you didn’t want that to happen again.
After getting ready for the day and making some eggs and toast for breakfast, you pulled out your laptop and began your search. You spent hours applying to anything that you were qualified for, mostly in the marketing departments since that was mainly what you did at your previous job.
It was well into the afternoon when you realized that you hadn’t eaten lunch. Making your way to the fridge, opening it to whatever Jake had it stocked with. However there wasn’t much in it, just some of Jake's meal preps, oak milk, and some veggies and hummus. Groaning and shutting the fridge door, you decide to go grocery shopping. A few minutes later you are on your way to the store with a list of things to pick up.
Once you arrive, you quickly gather some of your favorite snacks and treats as well as general necessities to help refill the barren fridge. Leaving the store, hopping in your car with some soft pop hits playing on the radio you happen to notice a farmers market a few blocks from the grocery store. You decide to stop and see what they have to offer, you always loved a good farmers market, reminding you of when you and your mum would go to them every week growing up, and interacting with the vendors.
You pick up a few different items from various vendors; some tomatoes, fresh raspberries, and zucchini. Eventually you come across this art vendor who is selling some homemade jewelry and knick knacks.
“Why hello dear, how are you today?” The old woman softly asks. Her voice is similar to your grandma, all kind and sweet.
“I’m good, how are you?” I responded.
“I’m good honey, it's a beautiful day,” she replies.
“These are beautiful” you say, looking over her collection of homemade bracelets and necklaces.
“Oh, thank you dear” she says, smiling softly.
Searching through her arrangements and various designs you eventually pick up a bracelet filled with tan and sage green beads, accompanied by a few small seashells. “I’ll take this one” you state.
“Oh excellent choice! That’ll be $7, I’ll wrap it up for you” she replies as you hand her the cash. Walking back to where you parked your car, you pass some of the shops that lined the rest of the street, stopping when you come across a bookstore. You’d always loved reading when you were younger but you feel that it has been ages since you read a book, with work just completely taking over your free time.
You are quickly wrapped back into your love for books and reading, walking through the tall bookshelves picking up a few books here and there mostly consisting of your favorite genres such as romance and mystery. Coming up to the cash with your pile of books, the cashier is stunned.
“Well, you certainly know what you like.” She states
“Sorry, I kinda went kinda crazy, I haven’t read in a really long time and I want to get back into it.” You reply.
“Oh well in that case, please stop by anytime you want” she says as she laughs. “What’s your name?”
“Oh it’s Y/N, I’m new to the city and still kinda exploring” you explain.
“Well, it’s nice to meet you Y/N, I’m Ruth, I own the store” she states while bagging up your books after you pay.
“Oh, well, I will definitely be coming back” you reply with a smile. Finally you actually get back to your car without any more distractions. You notice a text from Bob coming up on your phone.
Hey, are you feeling up for meeting the rest of the squad tonight? They keep begging me to get you to come to the Hard Deck, especially Nat
You quickly shoot off a reply; Yeah I can come tonight. Can’t wait!
The rest of your afternoon is pretty uneventful, getting home and putting the groceries away, you eat a late lunch and try to decide which of your books you're gonna read first and get started. You didn’t realize what time it was until you heard Jakes truck rolling into the driveway.
Making his way into the house after toeing off his boots, finding you on the couch where you had already started reading one of your books. “Hey” he says walking further into the house.
“Oh hey, how was your day?” you ask, looking over as he walks into the living room .
“Uh pretty good, just some classes and a few flight exercises, you?
You began rambling on about your day, eyes lighting up as you animatedly spoke about the farmers market and the book store you found along with all of the things you got. Jake sat there with a soft smile on his face as he watched you recount your day. It wasn’t until you asked him something that he realized he didn’t hear you and was just staring, admiring you looking all cozy on the couch.
“Jake? Is that okay?” you asked.
Shaking his head slightly, he said “sorry, what was that?”
“I said that my brother invited me to meet the rest of the squad tonight at the Hard Deck and I was wondering if you could give me a ride if you were planning on going too.”
“Oh uh yeah of course, we’ll head over there together” he replied.
Shortly after, Jake made himself something to eat, not before asking if you were hungry while you explained you were still full from earlier. A little while later you both began to get ready. Jake had quickly showered and changed into a black shirt and some jeans, meanwhile you were still getting ready, desperately trying to perfect your outfit for meeting your brother's friends, wanting to make a good impression.
Jake was about to knock on your door when it flew open and you collided face first into his chest. It was hard and muscular as he flinched when you hit him. Instinctively Jake wraps his hands around arms, helping to steady you.
“Oh sorry!” you say while blushing profusely as you take a step back and look up at him.
He chuckles “Its okay, I was starting to get worried, figured you got lost in your closet or somethin’ sweetheart.”
If you weren’t blushing already after feeling his muscles around you, you sure you were after hearing him call you sweetheart. Jake finally takes a look at what you're wearing, some light blue jeans with a cute white top that certainly helps to accentuate your breasts, he forces himself to look at your face and not get caught staring.
“Is this okay?” you ask, referring to your outfit as you take a step back. “I wasn’t sure what to wear. I've never been there before so I don't know what the vibe is.”
“You look great, don’t worry”. Just as you are putting on your shoes at the front door, his eyes catch your wrist accompanied by the bracelet you bought earlier that day.
“I like that bracelet,” he states. Glancing down to your left wrist you shrug, “yeah, it's the one I got today at that farmers market I was telling you about,” you mention.
“Oh yeah” Jake says awkwardly, knowing that you must have mentioned that when he got home, but was too distracted admiring you to actually focus on exactly what you were talking about.
The drive to the Hard Deck is quite, the radio filling the silence with some soft country music playing. When Jake pulls into the park lot, you shoot a quick text to Bob that you’re here. Once again Jake doesn’t let you open your door as he practically sprints around to open it for you.
“Thanks” you softly reply.
“No problem darlin” Jake says turning back to you, “are you ready to go?” After a deep breath, you nod your head and begin walking towards the entrance, Jake hot on your heels. Entering the Hard Deck, you take a look around trying to find your brother until Jake speaks up, “Here, we’re usually by the pool table over there” pointing to the back of the bar. Following his action you see a group of khaki uniforms, and begin walking over.
Bob spots you from his stool and gets up to give you a hug. Turning you toward the group of people already surrounding the pool table, Bob introduces you to his friends.
“Hey guys, this is my sister Y/N.” you give them a small wave. Bob begins again “This is Fanboy or Mickey, that’s Payback or Reuben, this is Phoenix or Nat my front seater, then we have Coyote or Javy, and you already know Hangman, and I think Rooster around here somewhere.” he states looking around for the mustached man, finding him coming back from the restrooms.
“Rooster this is my sister Y/N, Y/N this is Rooster or Bradley”
“Hi, nice to meet you” Bradley says rasply, as he looks you up and down.
Shooting a brief smile you reply with a quiet “hi.”
Phoenix is quick to come up to you, pulling you up to the bar with her as she says how glad she is to finally meet you. You order a margarita hoping that it helps loosen you up and not be as shy. Returning to the pool table you and Nat slide into one of the booths and continue talking, Bob and Fanboy eventually joining the two of you.
Jake is currently playing pool with Javy, Payback and Rooster. Jake occasionally glances your way when it's not his turn, seeing you talking and looking like you're having fun. A little while later you excuse yourself to use the restroom, making your way past the group playing pool.
Jake already noticed you getting up from the table. As you walk past the group, you grab Rooster's attention as he’s trying to line up a shot. His eyes follow your form, watching the sway of your hips and admiring how good you look in those jeans.
“Bradshaw” Jake spits out sending a glare towards him, “you gonna play or what?”
Returning the glare to Jake, Rooster takes his shot sinking a ball. “You got a problem Hangman?” he asks as he moves to take his next shot.
“Just hurry up, you’re gonna lose anyway, like you always do when you play against me,” Jake fires back taking a swing of his beer. Just as Rooster is about to take his next shot he spots you leaving the restroom and making your way to the bar, presumably to get another drink. With a perfect opportunity in mind Rooster takes his shot not even looking at the pool table, missing the ball completely.
“Oh well, your turn Javy” Rooster states stepping away from the table. “I’m gonna get another” he says, already making his way to the bar where you are standing waiting to order a drink.
Sliding in beside you at the bartop, feeling the warmth radiating off his body, you glance at him, quickly realizing who it is and say hi.
“Hey, you havin’ fun?” he asks.
“Yeah, I don’t know why I was worried to meet all you guys” you reply, with a soft smile on your lips.
“It’s understandable, we are kinda an intimidating bunch, well all of us except for Bob” he jokes causing you to laugh.
Standing at the pool tables, Jake watched your interaction with Rooster, tight grip on the neck of his beer bottle, trying to restrain himself from being too obvious.. Finally Penny makes her way to you and Rooster.
“Rooster you want another beer I presume” he nods politely “yes ma’am.”
 “And what can I get you hun?” Penny asks, turning her attention toward you.
“Oh um, I’m not sure actually, I totally forgot” you stutter.
“You like cocktails hun? Penny asks.
Nodding, “yeah, I had a margarita earlier but I’m in the mood for something sweeter” you reply.
“I know,” Rooster suddenly states, “how about a sex on the beach” he says with a smug smile on his face giving you a wink.
“A WHAT?” you reply, eyes nearly bulging out of your head.
Penny steps in “it's a cocktail, it's got vodka, peach schnapps, orange and cranberry juice” she explains.
“Oh, um okay I’ll have that then” you reply shyly, as Penny moves away to make your drink. You take a glance around back towards the rest of the squad, and happen to catch Jake's eyes, his face serious, nervously you turn back to Rooster.
“I like your shirt,” Rooster says as he comes up to feel the material on your shoulder, “it's cute…like you”
“Your head snaps to his face, there is a hungry look in his eyes, looking back down you reply quietly “Um thank you.” You had never been great at flirting if that's even what you would call this, but it seemed like Rooster was used to it, being confident that is. I mean anyone with facial hair like that would have to be.
Suddenly Penny sets your drink down on the bar. You go to grab your card, when Rooster stops you. “Here let me, you shouldn’t have to buy your own drinks your first night here, Penny can you add it to my tab?”
“Sure thing Rooster” she replies as she heads down the bar, leaving you two alone again.
“Well, aren’t you going to try it? Rooster says. Looking at him and then back at the cocktail in front of you, “Oh yeah.” You take a tentative sip careful to not spill anything on your shirt. To your surprise you like it.
“Wow, that's pretty good” you state. “Well I’m glad you like it sweetheart.” Rooster replies. Hearing the term of endearment, you think about how it doesn’t really affect you, at least not in the way it does when Jake said it earlier.
Speaking of Jake, he is about to make his way up to you at the bar and split up whatever this little conversation between you and Rooster is, when he spots Phoenix already a few feet from you. He is silently thanking her as she pulls you away from Rooster to join her back at the table.
The rest of the evening continues on, a few people swap out and play pool while others sit down and talk. Jake who was sitting with you and Nat in the booth left to use the restroom, however when he returned you were nowhere to be found, but more importantly neither was Rooster.
He was secretly trying to find you in the crowd of people when he noticed two figures outside on the back deck. Getting a closer look he could definitely tell it was you and Rooster, and now he was panicking. Deciding to intervene he made his way through the deck doors causing your attention to be drawn to him.
Shit he hadn’t actually come up with anything to say to you two, when suddenly a light bulb went off.
“Hey, um I was thinking of heading home,” he stated. Earning a glare from Bradley, you replied, “oh okay, I’ll be ready to go in a second, I’ll meet you inside.”
With a nod, he turned back into the bar, and went to close out his tab. You came back into the bar not long after, Rooster following behind you. After going to say goodbye to your brother and the rest of the squad you and Jake headed out to his truck.
Once again the car ride was pretty much silent, that is until Jake spoke up “So… Rooster huh?”
You looked at him with your brows furrowed, “Oh um, well not really” you reply.
Jake's eyebrow shot up, as he glanced back at you to keep speaking, “I mean he was kinda flirting with me, and then when he pulled me outside he did kinda ask me out.”
“Huh,” Jake says.
“But I turned him down,” you mumble
Jake looks at you again, letting you speak “I mean he’s not really my type, plus I not even sure I want to date yet, I mean I just moved here and I don’t even have a job yet, oh and come on did you see his mustache, I was just not into it” you ramble on.
A smile makes its way onto Jake's face, and he lets out a breathy laugh. Turning your head to him you ask “what?”
Shaking his head as he continues driving he replies “Nothing sweetheart.” Again. He said it again, sending a chill up your spine, you turn your attention back out your window as you turn onto your street and into the driveway.
Jake happily fell asleep that night, knowing that Rooster wasn’t going to be an issue anymore.

▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️▫️
“You’ve never danced like this before, we don’t talk about it”
“You can’t seriously sit at that table all night - pull your head out of your ass and come dance with us.”
Hangman couldn’t help but roll his eyes as Phoenix tried - and failed - to get him to join the rest of the squad on the crowded dance floor. He had arrived just over an hour prior, and as soon as he had a drink in hand he parked himself at a table in the back corner, content to stay there until it was appropriate to slip out. The rest of the team clearly didn’t get the memo as they sent over a different Dagger every ten minutes to try their hand at coaxing him out of the shadows.
Coyote was the first in the lion’s den, hoping the best friend approach would do the trick.
Unsuccessful.
Payback and Rooster were convinced that the good cop/bad cop method would loosen him up.
Unsuccessful.
Fanboy attempted to bribe him with a whiskey sour and the promise of playing him in a round of darts the next time they gathered at the Hard Deck (nobody would play against him these days, it was never a fair match up and his winning streak did nothing to keep his ego in check).
Unsuccessful.
They all knew, even though it was never explicitly stated, that Jake had a soft spot for Bob. So when all their other attempts were less than fruitful, they were hopeful that Bob would be able to soften his edges, maybe reason with him a bit.
Unsuccessful.
Now they were desparate. Hangman knew this, Phoenix knew this, the rest of the Daggers watching from a distance knew this. Even Maverick, who said he didn’t want to get involved, knew this.
“I didn’t realize you wanted to dance with me so bad, Nix. I’m flattered, honestly, but you aren’t my type.”
The smirk on his face grew as her jaw dropped open and her features were overtaken by a look of exasperation. She pointed a finger at him,“You know that’s not what I meant, asshole, if you want to sit over here and sulk all night that’s your prerogative - but I, and the rest of the team, are done wasting our night trying to save yours.”
Without saying another word, she spun on her heel and made her way back through the crowd. He didn’t let the smirk fall off his lips until he was sure Phoenix and the Daggers wouldn’t be watching. He finally let the facade fall down when they got too involved in the Cupid Shuffle to care anymore.
He tried not to watch the clock but he couldn’t help himself as he checked the time on the Nixon sitting on his wrist again. 8:13. If he could just get through 47 more minutes, he could make his rounds and sneak out early without seeming rude. Letting out a sigh, he rolled out his shoulders and picked up the whiskey sour Fanboy left behind in his fit of frustration.
After four excruciating minutes of “to the right, to the right, to the right, to the right,” the crowd began to thin out, So Close filling the silence left behind. Singles began making their way to the bar, whilst others stayed on the dancefloor, swaying softly with their dates. With an eye roll and a scoff, Jake lifted the small glass back to his lips. The amber liquid had barely begun to hit his throat when he caught sight of you.
Why did I take such a big fucking sip? The drink stuck in his throat had him coughing up a storm, the few people scattered around the tables near him were staring, but he didn’t care because there you were.
It was almost cruel how perfectly the crowd parted to reveal you dancing with some leutenient that couldn’t possibly be good enough to be on the receiving end of your attention.
In another life, he had the pleasure of being your dance partner, your partner in crime. You wasted away many nights going to bars, clubs, galas, and everything in between. Your energy was radiant when the beat captured your soul, and it was contagious to anyone lucky enough to be in your proximity. Dancing was when you let go and allowed yourself to be carefree, making a home out of the dancefloor. It was in these moments you were thoroughly happy. He knew he was the lucky one to get share in those moments with you, the moments when the beads of sweat started to gather on your brow and your face flushed from exhaustion. That was when you were the most beautiful, because you were the most authentically you.
Even though the lights were dim and he was a fair distance away he could see - he could feel  - how unhappy you were with the man in front of you. Your shoulders were tense, you kept looking around, your movements were all robotic, and there was not even a single bead of sweat on your forehead. But the thing that really gave you away? The smile you wore didn’t quite reach your eyes. He had never seen you dance this way before, it was unsettling and just all wrong.
His feet were carrying him towards you in long strides before he had time to second guess his actions - the whiskey sour once again forgotten at the table in the corner.
*****
You shouldn’t have agreed to come to this Gala, and you definitely shouldn’t have agreed to slow dance with this man whose name you didn’t even know. Between his hand sitting slightly too low on your back, his words coming at you a mile a minute, and the way he held more eye contact with your cleavage than your eyes - you were losing hope that this song was ever going to end.
“Mind if I cut in?”
That Texan drawl was one you’d recognize anywhere, and one you thought you’d never get the chance to hear again. All the air left your lungs as you turned around, coming face to face - or more accurately, face to chest - with the one that got away. The man you had been dancing with was forgotten the moment your eyes found those shining green ones.
“Hello? We were in the middle of a dance - or did you forget that?”
Distantly, you could hear the angry words coming from your poor excuse of a dance partner. After another beat of silence, he finally took the hint - leaving with a huff and a string of curse words you couldn’t bother to care about. Your brain was far too caught up on the fact that you were looking at Jake Seresin, and he was looking back at you with the same amount of love and adoration that he had all those years ago.
It was nostalgic, the two of you being in your own world on the dance floor. Neither of you dared speak a word, too afraid that the other would disappear if you did. So, without speaking, Jake lifted his hand in a gesture that asked can I have this dance? And your body reacted before your brain, easily slipping back into his arms. The familiarity of it all was overwhelming, but it gave you the courage to finally say something.
“I’ve missed you, Cowboy.”
“I want you by my side, so that I never feel alone again … I want you we can bring it on the floor”
The first time Jake had ever seen you was at a welcome barbeque for the Top Gun students. He walked with a new swagger that day, having secured an early lead during the first week of training. When he entered the Simpson’s backyard, he was unprepared for how else his life was about to change.
He stopped in his tracks the second he saw you from across the yard. There you were, rocking cut off levis and a loose linen shirt that showcased the array of tattoos littered on your right arm. Your hair was pulled back in a messy ponytail and the warmth of your smile could be felt from miles away. He needed to know who you were.
Before he could go introduce himself, Coyote put his hand across his best friend’s chest - effectively stopping him from going anywhere. Truth be told, as soon as he saw you he completely forgot that he had even come here with anyone. He turned to Coyote with an equally shocked and annoyed look on his face before asking, “What the hell, man?” Coyote wasn’t bothered by the annoyance lacing his tone, but was rather amused at his friend’s lack of awareness.
“You don’t know who that is, do you?” he asked Jake.
“Should I?”
“That’s the Admiral’s daughter, you dumb fuck.”
His head whipped back to you so fast he was sure he would wake up with a case of whiplash. Oh shit. Sure enough, you were standing right next to Admiral Simpson, laughing at something he was saying and clinking your beer bottle against his. He had never seen the Admiral look so relaxed before.
He had every intention of forgetting about you. Truly.
But you were not just unforgettable, you were magnetic and he felt his resolve slipping with every minute that passed in that damn backyard. He couldn’t shake the feeling that he was supposed to be in your orbit, that he needed to feel the full weight of your gravity and understand what made it so special.
Maybe he had a death wish, or maybe he was just stupid - but after just thirty minutes he couldn’t take it anymore. You had been looking at him too, he could feel your stare burning his skin and he decided there that he would risk everything for even the chance to know you at all.
Leaving Coyote in the dust, he began to cross the expanse of grass to where you were sitting alone by the firepit - grabbing two bottles of beer on the way.
“Mind if I join you?” he asked, holding out the other bottle towards you.
Looking up at him with a smirk, you grabbed the offering and answered “I thought you’d never ask, Cowboy.”
And so the two of you sat by that firepit, chatting about anything and everything. By the time the California sun had set, the beer bottles had left permanent rings on the creaky old lawn chairs, and the fire was no more than a few dying embers - Jake knew there was no turning back.
When the party was over and the stragglers began to file out of the yard, his heart began to beat at an alarming rate. He needed more time. How was he going to face the Admiral?
Was he going to get kicked out of Top Gun his first week?
Just when he thought his heart couldn’t beat any faster, the aforementioned Admiral began making his way towards the pair. Jake was quick to his feet, saluting so violently you could see the strain on his muscles.
You made eye contact with your father, your smiles growing until a fit of laughter consumed you both.
Between laughs, Simpson managed to get out a breathy, “At ease, Soldier.”
Growing more confused by the second, Jake couldn’t help but to ask, “Am I missing something here?”
Without missing a beat, the Admiral threw his arm around your shoulder and began, “Son, I know I’m a hardass at work - and don’t expect anything different come tomorrow morning - but my daughter is an adult and this party isn’t going to clean itself so move it or lose it.”
You shot out from under your Dad’s arm, giving him a mocking salute, “Sir, yes, sir,” and took off towards the house. Jake grinned at your antics and went to follow, but was quickly stopped by a strong hand on his chest - for the second time that night.
“I will only say this once - if you do anything stupid I will not hesitate to put you on bitch work for the next five years, are we clear?”
Jake looked him in the eyes and answered without hesitation, “Crystal.”
The rest of the night was filled with laughter, board games under the stars, and lots of dancing to whatever tune spilled out of the old JBL speaker. The Simpson household was full of a love that was addicting, and Jake wasn’t sure how he went this long without it. He also quickly learned that Admiral Simpson and Beau Simpson were two completely different people, and over the subsequent months he felt grateful to have the chance to love and respect both.
The next morning, and every morning after that, he started with a coffee from the little truck you proudly owned - even though he had to wake up an hour earlier to drive off base to get there. Nobody made it like you did, and nobody shimmied to the music while they steamed the milk like you did.
No matter how tired he was after training, he found the energy to see you every night. Some nights were spent at the Simpson household, some spent at various bars and clubs dancing the nights away. You don’t think you’ll ever forget the night Jake took you line dancing for the first time, laughing through the mistakes and rocking his Stetson - that was a little too big for you - on your head all night long. If you stuck to the old rule about wearing a cowboy’s hat, well, that was between you, Jake, and the backseat of his truck.
Though, from the very first night, you both knew that there was a built in timer on your relationship. You only had thirteen weeks together. He would get shipped off somewhere else, stateside if you were lucky, and you would still be at your little coffee truck in San Diego. So, the two of you hooked pinkies and agreed to make the most of your limited time together, but to say goodbye when the time came. What you had was special, and no matter how much it hurt, you didn’t want it to get tainted by the harsh reality of long distance.
The cruel thing about the clock is that it never stops ticking, and thirteen weeks were gone without a chance to pray for them to pass a little slower. Before you knew it, you were standing at the Top Gun graduation and Jake was being awarded the trophy he fought so hard to earn.
Beau Simpson slipped in place of the Admiral persona for a brief moment as he congratulated Jake on the achievement with a sad glint in his eyes.
“You’ll be missed around here, son, don’t be a stranger.”
You spent the rest of the night pretending that the next morning didn’t exist, and that Jake wasn’t getting on a plane come 10 AM. When the sun started to come up, a wink of sleep was still yet to be had and the alarm you set was a bitter reminder of the waning clock. So, you snoozed the timer and opted for Billy Joel’s She’s Got a Way instead. For one final time, you held eachother tight and swayed to the music with eyes full of unshed tears.
There was nothing left to be said when your car rolled into the departures zone, and so, with a sad smile, you gave Jake a salute.
“I’ll see you around, Cowboy.”
“We need to fetch back the time they have stolen from us .. I want you, we can bring it on the floor. Never danced like this before, we don’t talk about it - dancin’ on do the boogie all night long.”
Hearing you say that you missed him, hearing “Cowboy” roll off your tongue again, was almost too much for Jake. He kissed your hair and held you tighter to his chest, his body telling you what his voice couldn’t. With tears threatening to spill over, he asked, “How are Beau and Catherine fairing these days?”
You put your forehead against his chest and let out a laugh, “They miss kicking your ass at Catan.” Feigning offence, Jake pulled back to look in your eyes, “Please, I let them win, how else was I going to get invited back?” You couldn’t help but giggle as you bonked his nose with the hand that was on his shoulder, “Mhmm, sure you did, Cowboy.”
With the song rapidly approaching the end, you knew you had to ask the question hanging in the air. So, you took a breath and leaned your forehead against his, finding the courage to ask,
“Do I want to know how long you’re here for?”
“They decided to keep the squadron together, I’ll be stationed here for the forseeable future.”
With a mischievous glint in his eyes, he continued,
“I’ve been dying to hit up this little coffee truck in San Diego, but only if the owner is still willing to lipsync for me while she makes my mocha.”
For the first time that night, your face broke into that bright smile he missed so much, “I think she could be convinced.”
As So Close faded out, and Mamma Mia took its place - the two of you gained a new energy. Singing the lyrics to each other and dancing like nobody was watching, not stopping even when there was sweat coating both of your foreheads. There was more needing to be said, but it could wait for now.
The two of you were oblivious to the stares coming from various places around the room. The Daggers were in awe, both curious about who you were and desperate to know how you got Jake to dance in this way that they had never seen before. Coyote, and your parents, just stood off to the side and sipped on beers with a knowing smile gracing each face.
You guys looked just like you had that first night.

it only feels this raw right now
jake seresin x female!reader
word count: 2.5k
warnings: hurt/tiny comfort, none unless you count jake seresin just existing
a/n: hi, friends!! it has been, like, a year and a half since i’ve written anything and posted on here but! i’m back! i’ve been writing this for legit 8 months and finally finished this after rewriting and rethinking it so many. fucking times. shoutout to @qvid-pro-qvo for listening to me lie “I’m going to finish this today” for MONTHS and for supporting all my silly little fantasies and thoughts. this was going to be hurt/no comfort but i couldn’t deny the comfort in me, and there is potential for a part 2 if i ever decide to get motivation :) ok here it is enjoy BYE- (yes taylor swift inspired title from labyrinth leave me alone)
~~~
It was a moment you knew you’d look back on and think ‘this is when i lost everything i’ve ever loved.’
But really, you think, i never had the chance to love him.
It was never a dream of yours, to become a naval aviator. You didn’t have a family legacy to continue, natural talents guiding you, or an intangible need to be in the air. It was simply a career move to join the navy, to move into a field where women weren’t represented, and be able to go anywhere you were needed.
It was never a dream of yours to fly F-18’s into combat, to spend hours fighting nausea, anxiety, and ejections thousands of feet into the air.
It was never a dream of yours to be invited to top gun, to compete against the best and cockiest naval aviators in the business. Fightertown was not supposed to feel like coming home for you and the small group of friends you grew close to during your decade long service to the navy.
But it was certainly never a dream of yours to fall for the guy who you knew would always leave you behind.
“The hell are you doin’ out here?” Jake yelled out to you from the other side of the deck.
Avoiding you, smartass, and your annoying habit of dropping half of the letters that make a word, was the response floating through your brain.
“C’mon, Mav’s gonna buy us another round, and if you don’t step in, we’re going to have to listen to his welcome home speech. Again.”
“I’ll be there in a minute,” high tide was rolling in, and the sound of the waves brought a smile to your face. “I’m enjoying the view.”
“It would be better if I stood right,” he moved in front of you, his broad shoulders completely blocking the ocean, smile turned up into the slightest smirk, “here.”
It was a miracle that Jake Seresin has never had his nose broken with the amount of times he’s crowded a woman’s space. And yet, the little shticks he pulled always brought a smile to your face. Something that most of your fellow aviators often rolled their eyes at.
“Funny.” you moved out of his line of sight, focusing back on the crashing tide. “Don’t wait on me, go ahead and claim your free round.”
“Hey, we’re supposed to be celebrating the fact that we all came home from that death trap mission - thanks to yours truly - not longingly staring into the abyss as you contemplate life’s greater meaning.”
“Oh, that’s right,” you smirked,  “it’s still a sore spot, being the losing quarterback in dogfight football. This view must be hard for you to look at.”
“We’re gonna go there, really?”
“You gonna stand there and pretend it doesn’t sting?” You joked as he rolled his eyes.
“Whatever,” his eyes were still on you as your smirk fell, and you looked back at the horizon. You were holding onto the railing for dear life, Jake observed, and your knuckles were beginning to turn white. “Seriously, what are you doing out here?”
“What, a woman seriously can’t enjoy this ocean view?”
“Not if that woman is you.”
It was the slightest change of tone in his voice that got you to look over at him. Jake seresin in his civilian clothes was a rarity, and you were basking in his casual jeans and white t-shirt combination tonight. Also in rare form, his mouth in a straight line, showing you he wasn’t joking anymore.
And neither were you.
“I’m not going back to Top Gun.”
His expression didn’t change as he replied back, “None of us are, mission’s over. We’re getting our new assignments after this furlough.”
“No, Seresin,” you began while shaking your head. “I’m not going back to Top Gun to get my assignment, or debrief the mission any further.”
His eyebrows scrunched together, trying to figure out what you were saying without actually saying it.
“I passed my papers this past week. I’m done flying.”
He took two seconds to register the information, then scoffed.
“You can’t just be done flying in the Navy, this is the military we’re talking about. There’s rules, regulations, a thousand steps and pieces of red tape to comb through. You don’t just retire.”
“I didn’t say I was stepping away from the Navy, not yet anyway. But I’m done being a fighter pilot.”
“Are you,” Jake ran his fingers through his hair, clearly frustrated, and you had no idea why. “Are you even listening to me? You don’t tell the United States Navy you’re done, they tell you when you’re done. I don’t understand how you got your papers through, no one in their right mind is going to let a pilot as good as you just walk away. You’d have to kiss major ass of an admiral, or someone who knows an admiral or-”
He froze then, leaving his sentence unfinished as he turned to look at you.
“Maverick?” he asked, and you couldn’t do anything besides nod. “You can’t just leave,”
“Why not?” you asked, growing annoyed by the second of his inability to accept this.
“Because you’re a fighter pilot, a damn good one at that, and you’re just going to throw it away to be a, what, a civilian?”
“Surprised you could say the word without gagging,” you jeered, his eyes narrowing in on you.
“Listen, I’m trying to reason here with you, understand what’s going on-”
“Then ask me a fucking question instead of telling me what I can and can’t do.”
You didn’t look away from him as he came to stand next to you, that fucking smirk still on his face. He waited a few seconds, sizing you up before opening his mouth again.
“Fine. Why are you leaving?”
It was not a simple question, and it was one you have had to answer several times over the last few weeks. To Maverick, you said it was time to move on. You needed a change from the fast paced, no roots life of a naval aviator. To the admiral, you said you’d accomplished everything you wanted in your career as a fighter pilot with the Navy. He saluted you on a job well done on this latest mission. And to the transition counselor, you said the job had begun to scare you. She encouraged you to find another purpose in the Navy as your leave was to be finalized.
But none of those answers were the full truth, not even all put together.
“Because I don’t want to sit through debriefs, or listen to the list of tactical strategies we can use, or face another deployment in a place I don’t know and people I don’t trust.”
“I don’t want to do that shit any more than you do, but I do it. I suck it up so that I can get in the air and fly. That’s what all this is about, right? Getting in the air and doing what we were born to do.”
“And that doesn’t terrify you?” you questioned. “It doesn’t terrify you that the moment you get up there you could burn into a million pieces? Get shot down in the middle of foreign air space, get stuck in a bird strike, even make a dumb mistake like run out of fuel? Cause everytime I suit up I think: is today the day my family gets a letter from the Navy, thanking me for my service and making the ultimate sacrifice?” your eyes were beginning to water, and you were desperate not to cry in front of him. “So yeah, I went to Mav and asked a big favor to get me out, and I don’t regret it. And I’m not going to let you or anyone else make me feel bad about it.”
Jake refused to look away from you, and it was making you feel the slightest bit intimidated, though you’d never admit that to him.
“Hey, Hangman,” you heard the giggly voice and could already picture the drunk, plastered smile on a petite girl Jake always went after. Looking over at the back door to the hard deck, the brunette in a slinky pink sundress and two drinks in her hand confirmed your guess. “You gonna come back in here and finish these drinks with me?”
He looked at her, muttering a ‘shit’ under his breath, and you took this as an opportunity to wipe at your eyes.
“I’ll be right there.”
You shook your head as she went back inside, and turned away from Jake.
“Can’t go a day without a girl, can you, Hangman?” you said with a scoff. “You know what, thanks for attempting to understand my decision, but I don’t want to keep you from that lovely woman inside.”
“That’s your problem, you know. You think you’re so much better than us, with your ivy league education and moral standing, you can’t stand being lumped into a mission, let alone a group of plebes with us.”
“You got me, I’m disgusted with you all so much I risk my life for you every time I get in the air.” You shook your head, not wanting to get into an argument over this with Jake. “Just leave me alone, Seresin.”
“Not until you tell me the real reason you’re leaving the navy. Everyone’s scared shitless up there, your fear is nothing special.”
“Because I can’t do this anymore!” you relented. “I can’t go months on deployment, dreaming of the day I’m going to get back to North Island to see you, only to find that exact scenario,” you motioned to the door once again, referring to the next random woman in his life, “playing out every damn time for the last seven years.”
“I don’t… I don’t understand.” He commented, losing all his charm and ego.
“I know you don’t.” You didn’t know where to go with this.
It was never your intention to reveal your feelings for Jake, to Jake. It was something you planned on keeping tucked away for the rest of your life, minus the part where Phoenix was starting to catch on. You didn’t want to feel this way for him, but his stupid grin, and his annoying sense of humor, and the small snippets of sincerity he would reveal to you reeled you in. And you knew it was going to hurt you, continuing to watch him bounce from girl to girl in the bar you guys called home, but you had his friendship.
Besides, a guy like Hangman would never want to settle down with a woman like you.
You watched as he looked from the ocean view, to you, back and forth as he tried to think of something to say. And damn your fucking brain for focusing on how beautiful his green eyes looked in this light.
“Why didn’t you tell me? How was I supposed to know-”
“And what would you have done? Let me down slowly as our friends slowly start to pick sides; create awkward moments while training for a mission that almost killed us?” You shook your head, wrapping your arms around your body in an attempt to both warm up and comfort yourself. “I don’t want to talk about this anymore. You’re not the reason I’m leaving. I just can’t do all of this anymore, it’s not healthy for me. And I can’t pretend to enjoy it anymore. Let’s just… go back inside and get this night over with.”
You turned to walk back inside, but Jake had to open that big mouth of his.
“Why did you assume I wouldn’t feel the same?”
“What?” Is he saying what you think he’s saying?
“You really think I enjoy coming back to North Island every year to see Rooster? To listen to Fanboy, Phoenix, and Coyote sing into the early morning? If I wanted to spend a weekend with Coyote, I sure as hell don’t need to spend a thousand dollars on a plane ticket to Fightertown.”
It was your turn to throw a confused look at Jake. Was this his way of telling you he cares about you?
“Half the reason I was up Rooster’s ass to make the team was to protect you out there. No doubt in my mind you were going to make the team, and I couldn’t let you go out there without me on your six.”
Your eyes began to water again, realization sinking in.
“Are you serious right now?”
He threw his hands in the air, “why would I choose this moment to fuck with you?”
“I just have a hard time believing you cared about me after watching you go after half of the women in this town.”
“That’s not fair-”
“I’m not trying to offend you, I’m just stating the facts, Seresin. Believe me, I don’t want to be in love with the one man who refuses to be in a relationship, but we don’t really get a choice in it now do we.”
His eyes softened, mouth dropping open the slightest bit. You furrowed your brows at him, and then remembered what you said.
You love him.
“I told you,” you wiped away a tear that fell and took a breath, “I really can’t do this anymore.”
He moved to take a step towards you, and you took one back at the same time, keeping the distance between you. He breathed out your name, and it took everything in you not to let him close to you.
“I do believe you, on some level and I don’t know if that’s because it’s true, or I just want my feelings reciprocated-”
“It’s true.” He was adamant. Determined. Sincere.
“But I meant what I said. I can’t be a naval aviator anymore, no matter the circumstances. I need to take the time to figure out what I want to do, who I want to be outside of here.” Your eyes began to water again as you looked at him, then to the image of your friends inside the bar, laughing the night away. “And maybe that will give us time to really see how we feel about each other.”
“It’s not going to change.” He commented, watching as his hands flexed in and out of a fist. “If it hasn’t changed over the course of five years, it’s not going to change over the course of a few months. I don’t care how much distance there is between us or how many women you put in front of me, I’m still gonna be in love with you.”
Hearing him say it, i’m still gonna be in love with you, made you believe that this may have all been worth it. Maybe.
You let him take the two steps closer to you, willing yourself to trust him and his words. He brought his hands up to your face, gently wiping the tears off your cheeks. You quickly brought your hands up to rest on his forearms as his forehead fell to yours.
“I’m still going to need some time,” you felt him nod against you. “But I trust you.”
“Okay,” he mumbled before bringing his lips to your forehead, softly kissing your skin. “I’ll wait as long as you need me to.”
Maybe, you think, I’ll get that chance to love him after all.
Pairing: Jake “Hangman” Seresin x Reader (Non- descriptive, no use of Y/N)
Word Count: 4.1k (im so sorry)
TW: Description of injuries, dog fight (literally), hurt animal, swearing
Summary: You’re a dog walker, and Jake’s dog Daisy is your new client. You don’t expect Jake to be interested in you- and you also don’t expect him to be carrying you into the hospital two weeks later.
Authors note: This is an extremely self- indulgent fic. I just love hurt & comfort tropes okay???? Sue me. Enjoy!
********************************************************************************************
You were exhausted from a day full of class and you wanted nothing other than to go home and take a nice long nap. You of course did not have the leisure for that today- you were going to straight to a new clients’ house.
His name was Jake, he’d been referred to you by Penny, one of your favorite people on the planet. Jake was a pilot friend of hers that recently adopted a dog. You couldn’t say no to helping Penny out, even when your schedule was busting at the seams.
Dog walking was supposed to be a temporary gig until you found another job – but you fell in love with it.
You’d been chatting with Jake via text for the last few days, trying to nail down a time you could stop by his house to meet him and his pup. You had 15 minutes to get to the address he’d sent, so you buckled in and were on your way.
You pulled up to a small tan bungalow. It was nestled in a crowded neighborhood with rows of cars parked on the narrow streets. You were only half a mile from the ocean, you could smell it through your cracked windows.
You climbed out of your car and stretched. You held the pepper spray on your car keys in-between your fingers, just in case.
You knocked on the old wood door and waited for an answer.
“Oh! Who’s here Daisy?” a voice called from inside the house, in a playful tone. “Is it your new friend?” The man was using a baby voice, which brought a smile to your face. The door opened and you looked up.
Oh shit.
He was not what you were expecting. He was your age, tall with tanned skin- and his hair was the perfect shade of blonde. He was smiling at you through crinkled eyes, but even then you could see a glint of mischievousness in them.
Before you could speak a furry yellow body hit you in your knees. You almost fell over from the force of it, but luckily you caught yourself. You laughed and leaned down to see who must have been Daisy, running in circles around you.
“Hi puppy!” You said happily, scratching the dogs head softly. Daisy looked to be about 60 pounds, and she was FULL of energy.
“Geez Daisy, don’t knock the pretty lady over.” Jake said, grabbing her collar and brining her close to him. You immediately blushed at his flirtation.
“It’s okay, I’m used to it.” You said with a smile. “It’s nice to meet you in person, and Daisy too.” She was panting with excitement and her brown eyes were gleaming with happiness.
“And you as well.” You watched as his eyes flickered over your body. You shifted your weight back and forth nervously.
“So, what exactly are you needing for Daisy?”
You seemed to break him out of… his trance.
“Oh- come in, sorry about that.” He said sheepishly, stepping inside and propping the door open for you. You hesitantly took a step forward.
“I have pepper spray.” You warned in a joking manner. Well, half joking. Jake put his hands up in surrender.
“Understood.” There was a hint of amusement in his eyes as you fully stepped in the air- conditioned home. Jake shut the door behind both of you. Daisy immediately was back at your side, wagging her tail against your legs.
His home was small, with white walls and dark hardwood floors. It was open concept, with one hallway that seemed to lead to a bedroom and bathroom. You noticed a mantle in the living room with picture frames.
No serial killer vibes yet, so that’s good.
“Here we can let her play in the yard while we talk business.” Jake offered, leading the way to a sliding glass door just past the kitchen. You nodded and followed him to the sunny back yard.
Daisy bolted as soon as the door opened and did laps within the fence line. You laughed at the sheer amount of energy she held.
“Perfect yard for a dog.” You noticed, taking in the large grassy area. Jake nodded and took in a deep breath.
“Yeah, she needs to get all that energy out.” He said weakly. “I swear to god she never gets tired.”
You smiled at him. He looked tired. When you looked past his perfect smile and skin you saw bags under his eyes. You assumed Daisy had been keeping him up all night with all her playful energy.
“Well, I can try to help you with that.” You said, trying to give him some semblance of hope. “Dogs like her need a lot of exercise, she’s probably just amped up from you working all day.”
Daisy was now playing with a ball by herself, dropping it and letting it roll so she could chase it.
“I know.” He rubbed his large hands over his eyes. You tried not to stare at the tiny flash of tanned skin that showed when his shirt lifted. “I normally don’t say this, but I think I’m a little in over my head.”
You giggled at how worried he was over Daisy, but you also felt sorry for him. You knew first-hand how much work a new dog could be.
“You guys will get into a routine eventually, don’t worry.” You encouraged him. “How can I help?”
Jake sighed loudly.
“I work on the weekdays, so any day you’re able to come over during the week would be great.” You watched as his gaze wandered over to Daisy. He had a fondness in his eyes that made your heart skip.
“Okay, I can make that work.” You pulled out your phone to look at your schedule. Normally you wouldn’t squeeze so may days into your schedule – but the thought of seeing Jake again was too tempting.
“I have class three days a week, but on those days, I can swing by in between lectures. Does that sound okay?” You typed in “Daisy” every day at 12, just as a reminder.
“Yes, thank you so much.” He sounded relieved. Daisy ran up to you at full speed. You laughed loudly when she rolled on her back for belly rubs. You gladly gave in to her request.
“Well, I guess I don’t have to worry about her not liking you.” He had that same flirty smile from when he first opened his door. You bit your lip and shook your head.
“You know, I think I might be her new favorite.” You grinned at him and kept rubbing Daisy’s belly. Jake’s face turned into a pout immediately.
“No, she’s definitely a daddy’s girl. Aren’t you baby?” He cooed and Daisy quickly ditched you for him. You chuckled and stood up to your full height to watch the two have give each other kisses.
“See!” he pointed as Daisy continued to lick his face. You shook your head and smiled.
He was really something. You wished you had worn something a little- less causal. You weren’t expecting him to be your age, handsome and flirty as hell.
“Well thank you for meeting with me. I always like to meet the dogs before I show up here alone. Sometimes they get spooked if we haven’t met before.” You explained, stuffing your phone back in your pocket.
You needed to get going, and you hated to take up too much of Jake’s time.
He stood up and dusted dog hair off his shorts.
“Of course, thank you for doing this.” He smiled and scratched the back of his neck before speaking.
“Maybe we can get drinks some time? If you’re into single dog dads that is.” His eyes gleamed with flirtation. Your eyes widened at the offer.
“I um- sure. I’m not into hook-ups though, if that’s what you’re offering.” Warmth flooded to your cheeks. You were flattered that he was into you, and you wanted to see him again. But something about a man as hot as him screamed casual sex.
“What part of that pickup line made you think I wanted a hook-up? Damn I must be rusty.” He looked genuinely embarrassed, so you raised your eyebrows at him.
“Oh.” You choked out awkwardly. “I guess you’re just kind of the model type – and I just assumed.” You stood there idlily, shifting your weight like you always did when you were nervous.
“Well damn that’s the most creative compliment I’ve ever gotten.” He grinned and licked his lips. You were pretty sure your face was the color of a tomato at this point, and you just prayed that it wasn’t showing through your makeup.
“But that’s not what I want.” He stopped himself. “I mean obviously I want you like that – but.” He was stumbling over his words now and you were starting to feel less and less embarrassed.
“Jesus woman you have me turning into Jello.” He licked his lips and took a deep breath. “How about a walk on the beach? I’ll bring a very, very, very cute dog with me.” He smiled extra wide this time and batted his eyes.
You were so fucked.
“Deal.” You said laughing at his persistence. “But only if you bring the dog.”
Daisy barked and wagged her tail, causing both you and Jake to laugh.
“Done.”
It had been about two weeks since you first met Jake. You’d be lying to yourself if you said you didn’t think about him often. You were insanely attracted to him – and the fact that he wanted to get to know you better, well that just turned you on more.
You were supposed to go on that date you two talked about tomorrow evening after he got off work, but for now you were headed to his house to walk Daisy.
It was your fourth time walking Daisy. She was horrible on leash, but you were working on it with her. You had been sending pictures of Daisy to Jake throughout the week, and he was loving it. In-between photos he asked more about you.
Where are you going to school? What are you majoring in? Where are you from? What do you like to do for fun?
It amazed you that someone as handsome and accomplished as him was interested in you. It’s not like men hadn’t sought after you before – it’s just that he was perfect.
You parked your car in the driveway and grabbed the spare key he gave you from your glovebox. As you walked up to his door you heard Daisy starting to bark in excitement.
“Hi Daisy girl!”
She slinked back and forth while you reached down to pet her yellow fur.
“Are you ready for your walkies? Come on let’s go get your leash.”
It’s like Daisy knew exactly what you were saying because she instantly ran into the house where her leash usually hung. You followed behind her, shutting the door before you entered.
It was weird to be in Jake’s house without him. Everything was so neat, besides the dog toys all over the floor. You grinned thinking about Jake picking all the toys out for Daisy. He definitely spoiled her.
You leashed Daisy up and then you were out the door. You were supposed to be taking her on a walk, but really, she was taking you on a walk at the rate she was pulling.
You were headed to the beach. It was only about a 40-minute walk round trip, the perfect amount for both you and Daisy to stretch your legs.
You grabbed your phone from your jacket pocket and snapped a picture of Daisy to send to Jake. God, he made you so giddy it was ridiculous.
“Cute dog!”  you looked ahead of you to where you heard a man’s voice. You noticed a middle-aged man sitting on his front porch. You waved at him.
“Thanks!” you yelled back, keeping the same pace you were before. As you walked in front of his house, he got off his chair, making you tense up nervously.
“Can I pet her?” he asked. He was already walking off the porch, and Daisy was already wiggling her tail in excitement. You gritted your teeth, wishing you had just crossed the street when you heard him. It’s not that you thought the man had bad intentions, you just didn’t want the social interaction.
“Yeah, she’s friendly.” You said reluctantly, as he finally reached you to bend down and pet Daisy.  He smelt like alcohol and cigarettes, and he was wearing a dirty white tank top and flannel Pajama Pants.
Daisy’s behavior seemed to change when he started petting her. Her tail stopped wagging and her ears were back. You assumed she smelt the alcohol or sensed that the guy was incoherent.
“Have a nice day.” You said, starting to move away, tugging Daisy’s leash to follow. The man reached out and grabbed your arm. You immediately gasped and ripped it from his hands.
“Bitch.” He spat. You were already turning away, half jogging this time when you heard the loud growl of a dog. You swung your head around to see a large black dog running down from the man’s house straight for you.
“Shit!” you yelled. You tried to move Daisy, but she was planted in front of you, posturing back at the dog in a protective stance.
“Daisy let’s go! Daisy!” you yelled even louder than before. But she wasn’t listening, she stood still with her teeth barring. The black dog stopped in front of you and Daisy. It looked angry, and you felt fear rip up your spine.
“Call your dog!” you yelled to the man who was still standing on his lawn watching the situation like it was nothing. The man scoffed.
“He won’t cross the property line. Just keep moving.” He countered back. As soon as he finished his sentence the black dog pounced on Daisy.
So much for staying on the property.
You screamed and immediately dropped her leash to try to help Daisy. She was trapped under the attacking dog who was biting her everywhere. Daisy was trying to fight back, but she was so much smaller than him.
You started kicking the black dog as hard as you could. The older man reacted to that and started trying to recall his dog.
“Get back here! Gus cut it out!” he yelled, but it made zero difference. You were panicking when you realized your kicks were doing almost nothing. You couldn’t stand to hear Daisy’s whimpers anymore.
You reached for the black dog and attempted to yank him off Daisy. The dog immediately snapped at you, causing a sharp burning sensation to pulsate down your arm. You didn’t stop though, and still held your grip to continue pulling him off. The black dog took another sharp bite into your arm making you cry out in pain.
You saw Daisy escape from under him, making you release the dog immediately. The black dog went to leap on you, but Daisy barreled on top of him instead. You held your bleeding arm and started screaming for help, hoping neighbors would hear the commotion.
Daisy had the upper hand now, trying her best to bite the bigger dog beneath her. Your vision was blurry, and your heart was beating so fast you thought you might pass out.
“Gus come! Now!” The man screamed, now close enough to the black dog that it seemed to hear him. The black dog threw Daisy off him and made a break for the house. You watched as it ran through the front door. You immediately turned your attention to Daisy.
Your whole body was pulsing, but you had to know she was okay. She had blood all over her fur, you couldn’t tell which was hers and which was the other dogs. She was panting heavily, and her eyes looked so afraid. But she was standing, and there were no pools of blood around her.
You turned to talk to the stranger, but he was gone.
Adrenaline was rushing through you. You had to get Daisy to the vet, but there was no way you could drive. You were shaking all over from anxiety. You looked down the street and saw your car, you had barely even walked more than a few houses away.
“You’re okay Daisy” you said, tears rolling down your face. You stood up and she immediately stood next to you. You both walked as fast as you could back to the house, you pulled out your phone and almost vomited at the sight of blood covering your hands. You noticed a few rips in your sweater, but you didn’t feel a thing. You were too focused on getting help.
You fumbled with it in your hands and dialed Jakes number. He immediately picked up.
“Well, if it isn’t my favorite dog-walker!” he said cheerfully. You tried to speak but he was too quick. “I’m on my way back to the house now, I was thinking we coul—” a sob ripped from your chest before he could finish.
You were starting to breath erratically. Your heart was beating so quickly, and you couldn’t find the words you needed.
“What’s wrong?” he asked frantically. You tried to respond but nothing came out. “What happened?” he asked even more frantic than before.
You opened his house door and shut it behind you and Daisy. You immediately slumped on the ground, your chest heaving up and down. Jake was saying something on the phone, but you could barely hold your arm up to hear him.
Daisy plopped down on the ground and you sobbed again looking at how awful she looked.
“Daisy got attacked by a dog.” You sucked in a breath of air and choked on it. Your teeth were chattering, and you felt so hot but so cold. You could hear Jake swearing on the other end.
“I’ll be there in 5 minutes.” His voice was strained, and you cried wishing that he was here now.
“Are you hurt?” he asked, but the phone slipped from your trembling hands. You ignored the pain coursing through you as you moved over Daisy’s body.
There were multiple punctures on her chest and bite marks all over her legs. You searched around you for something to wipe the blood. You knew there were rags in the kitchen, but you were sure if you stood up you’d pass out.
Daisy got up from her spot and started licking your tears and whining.
You choked out a laugh as she did so. She was trying to comfort you, when you were the one supposed to be taking care of her.
You heard the sound of a car pulling into the driveway. You attempted to wipe tears from your face, but you only managed to spread fresh blood on your face. The door busted open.
You looked up to see Jake standing in the doorway. He was breathing heavily and his forehead had a thin layer of sweat on it. His eyes went from you to Daisy and back to you.
“Holy shit.” He swore, immediately diving to the ground towards the both of you. Daisy waddled up to him with her tail wagging, attempting to lick his face. You let out a sigh of relief at her enthusiasm.
You leaned back against the wall and started to close your eyes.
You suddenly felt warm hands all over you. You groaned and opened your eyes to see Jake, inches away from you with concern written all over his face. His features were tense and his normally warm eyes were dark.
“We need to get you to a hospital.” His hand grabbed your arm and you hissed in pain.
“Daisy.” You said licking your lips and glancing over at her.
“We will take her too I promise.” He assured you. You could feel him unzipping your jacket and you squirmed against his touch.
“I have to take this off, okay?” he asked, even though he was already working against your resistance. You only had a sports bra underneath- but you gave up the fight.
“Whose dog did this?” he gritted out, while trying to maneuver the material off of you. You didn’t have the energy to respond.
He finally managed to slip off your jacket- your eyes bulged when you looked down at your arm. It was covered in blood, and there was at least 6 punctures from the dog’s jaw. You had no idea that you were bleeding so badly.
“Oh shit.” You groaned. Your head felt heavy. You leaned it back against the wall.
“Yup we gotta go.” He said as he ripped your jacket into a smaller piece of fabric to wrap around your arm. You cried out softly when he pressed it against your wounds.
“I know, I’m sorry.” His voice was pained, and you wanted to tell him it was okay, but everything was getting fuzzy.
“Jake.” You said. Nausea was growing in you and your head felt like it was going to explode. You looked up at him but he was too busy tending to your arm to meet your gaze. You gulped.
“Jake I think I’m going to pass out.” You said shakily. His eyes met yours, but in a split second they were gone.
You could hear him swearing before you felt your body being lifted against his chest. Everything went dark.
*****************************************************
You blinked your eyes a few times, trying to discern where the bright as fuck lights were coming from. You squinted to reveal a ceiling you didn’t recognize. You hissed as a jab of pain shot up your arm. You looked down to see your whole forearm wrapped in white gauze.
Memories from when you were last conscious resurfaced. You gasped and sat up, panic overtaking you.
“You’re awake.”
You jerked to your right to see a very tired looking Jake. He was still in his pilot’s uniform, that was stained with… what you could only assume was your blood.
“Is Daisy okay?” was the first thing you could think to ask.
Jake smiled at you and sat up in his chair. He leaned over and set his elbows on his knees.
“She’s going to be just fine. She’s already all fixed up and at home with my buddy Rooster.”
You let out a huge sigh of relief. You winced at the memory of her bloody body, and the terrorizing whimpers.
“She protected me from the dog.” You said shakily. “It could have been a lot worse.” You weakly shifted in the hospital bed.
“Yeah - a neighbor sent me their ring doorbell footage.” Jake said warily. “You saved her too. That’s how you got bit.”
You clenched your jaw thinking about the attack being caught on tape. Just the idea of watching it made you want to vomit. You didn’t think you’d ever been so terrified. You had felt so utterly helpless.
“I’m just glad she’s okay.” You said softly. Jake’s green eyes traveled over your body. You had a hospital blanket tucked around you, and you could feel your hair tangled in a bun.
“I’m sorry this happened.” Jake’s jaw was clenched, and his normally cheery eyes were dark.  “I’m going to make sure that guy pays for it.”
You reached out to grab his hand that was resting on his lap.
“He’s a drunk. There’s no point.” You said softly. “And the dog just has a bad owner.”
Jake’s body still hadn’t relaxed. You looked up to see him shaking his head.
“When I saw both of you on the ground like that.” His voice shook. “Covered – and I mean covered in blood.”
He took a deep breath and ran his free hand through his hair. Your chest ached at the pain he was feeling.
“It scared the shit out of me. And I’m not letting him get away with hurting my girls like that.”
Your heart jumped when he said my girls.
He seemed to have catch his slip up by the looks of the heat rising on his cheeks. You smiled and squeezed your hand over his.
“We’re alright. I promise.”
Jake nodded and licked his lips.
“This is pretty romantic huh? I mean I did sleep in this chair for 7 hours waiting for you to wake up.” He teased. You laughed and felt warmth fill you.
“Definitely romantic.” You agreed, winking at him.
“I think me rolling you out to the parking lot in a wheelchair is even more romantic, right?” he asked, excitement filling his voice.
“Oh definitely.” You agreed, a big grin on your face. He leaned his arms against the hospital bed and sighed.
“Well, we better hurry then.”
He rolled you out of the hospital and brought you back to his place where he refused to let you do anything but rest.
Daisy curled up next to you on his couch, and Jake sat with your head in his lap. He watched you and Daisy all night, taking care of you both until the sun came up.
Spooky season. It had to be your favourite time of year. The fall brought so many changes and flavours and aesthetics you just couldn’t resist. From the pumpkin spiced everything’s to the burnt embers and oranges that littered the trees that lined the sidewalks. To the overconsumption of old Halloween classics and seasonal house decor that made you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
Halloween was and always would be, yourself favourite holiday, and for that you thanked the pagans for their belief system many centuries ago. Without them? Why else would you have an excuse to sit in your living room with what felt like an endless supply of single wrapped sweets and chocolates that you should very well have been saving for the trick or treaters that would be roaming the streets of suburban Texas the following night.
“Is that how you wanna spend your summer?” You’d seen IT probably a million times before, but it was always a good start. “Inside of an arcade?” Eddie Kaspbrak asked little Richie Tozier as you popped another Reese's peanut butter cup into your mouth.
“Beats spending it inside your mother.” You couldn’t help but to say the line out loud knowing exactly what comeback was coming around the corner. Like clockwork little Richie said the same thing he always said and you laughed like an adolescent. Yeah, the IT Saga was always a good place to start before moving into the Halloween Collection and Scream Series.
You were what some would call ‘Basic’ But to you basic was better than being overly ambitious and lacking in complete pop culture appreciation for the movies that were, in your very not so professional opinion, the backbone of the spooky season film industry.
In need of another glass of Prosecco or perhaps something a little stronger and gin based, you made your way into the kitchen after you’d paused your movie. The house smells of cinnamon and pumpkin, there was no escape from the ever present and consuming aroma of fall as you took a moment to decide if you were going to finish that bottle of Prosecco or move on to the big boys. The gin sours. After all, you were home all alone on Halloween Eve and there was nothing stopping you from getting a little tipsy in the quiet and comfortable silence of your humble abode.
Even your Flyboy boyfriend, Jake Seresin, wasn’t coming home. The original plan had been he was taking some much needed leave to come home and spend two full weeks back in the arms of the woman he loved so dearly. But things changed, life happened, and all of a sudden you were facing the reality that you would be alone for the Halloween holiday head on.
You couldn’t blame him, it was just the way the job went sometimes. Things came up, plans changed overnight and soon enough, four entire months had passed since you’d last seen Lieutenant Commander Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin, or as he was more affectionately known to you as, Flyboy.
It was just the way the pumpkin spiced cookie crumbled this time around, but Jake had promised the minute Robert Floyd was back on deck after his four weeks of leave for paternity were over, he was racing back to you.
In the middle of your silent thoughts on when you’d get to see your boyfriend of three years again, your phone began to vibrate back on the coffee table where you’d left it. The ringer had been silent—but the vibration against the glass was all you needed to hear as you padded back into the living room. Still drinkless and very much sober, something that needed to change very quickly if you were going to enjoy your time alone.
You anticipated the call to be Jake, but when the caller ID didn’t read ‘Flyboy’ with one of those obnoxious pink hearts next to it, you frowned. All that was staring back at you was an unknown number, one you hadn’t seen before. One that didn’t look familiar or resemble any contact you might have accidentally deleted from your contacts.
You’d heard what could become of curious minds, but that didn’t stop you from swiping the pad of your thumb across the vibrating screen before you held your phone up to your ear.
“Hello?” You asked cautiously, already wondering who could be calling you this late who didn’t know you.
“Hello?” A voice you didn’t recognise mimicked your greeting.
“Yes?” You grimaced at your own stupidity for a second as you made your way back into the kitchen.
“Who is this?” The man on the other end of the phone asked like he wasn’t the one who called you.
“Hmm—Well who are you trying to reach?” You tried to remain polite, for all you knew as you reached up for the bottle of gin, it truly could have been a mistake. A wrong number situation if you will.
“What number is this?” The man asked, a little more confused.
“Well what number are you trying to reach?” Your patience was going a little thin, but nevertheless you remained polite.
“I don’t know.” The man on the end of the line sounded as if he shrugged with a cocky little smirk. Was this some sort of prank call?
“I think you have the wrong number.” As if you were going to play along. Prank calls around this time of year were a dime a dozen and you just weren’t in the mood for childish antics.
“Do I?” He asked, almost shocked, like he knew that he had the right number all along. Because he did.
“It happens.” You shrugged it off with a quick eye roll, silently masking your annoyance. “Take it easy man.” You ended the call with a quick sigh and placed your phone on the counter as you went about making yourself a stronger, more appropriate beverage. The night was still somewhat young and you wanted a buzz. But then, once again, your phone rang with that same unknown number. At first you weren’t going to answer, but something inside you told you it could just be one of Jake’s friends pulling a prank.
“Hello?” You tried to mask the annoyance in your tone but it must have come across as clear as day as you answered the phone. Same unknown number, same smug voice.
“I’m sorry—I guess I dialled the wrong number.” The man on the other end sounded like he smiled through his words.
“So why’d you dial it again?” It was a genuine question, why would someone who dialled the wrong number dial it again? On purpose.
“To apologise.” The man replied rather quickly as you worked to pour yourself a rather strong shot of gin. It was going straight into the shaker.
“Well consider your apology accepted.” How stupid was the guy? “Goodbye now—“
“Wait, wait—don’t hang up.” He nearly begged, you could hear the desperation in his voice, the need to keep you on the line. What was this weirdo playing at?
“Why would I not?” You frowned, stilling your movements to pounder this entire situation. Who the fuck was this guy? What did he want? Did you know him? Was this some sort of prank?
“Because I wanna talk to you for a second.” Oh okay, now you got it.
“They’ve got numbers for that kinda shit.” You chuckled to yourself under your breath. “I ain't that kinda girl.” You didn't even bother saying goodbye this time, you simply pressed the end call button and went about making yourself a drink.
By the time you got settled back on the couch amongst a sea of throw blankets and halloween themed pillows, the TV had dimmed. If anything that was a clear indication as to how much time you had actually wasted talking to that random creeper on the phone.
As you got settled, the buzzing vibration of your phone on the coffee table scared the ever living Christ from you. You groaned when you saw it, that same unknown number. With a huff, you answered.
“Why don’t you wanna talk to me?” Your heart nearly sunk at the harshness the man used as you held your phone up against your ear.
“Who the hell is this?” You frowned again, this time you weren't playing games. You’d spent enough time entertaining this lunatic and now it was time to get to the bottom of who the fuck was messing with you.
“You tell me your name and I’ll tell you mine.” The man chuckled to himself as he watched you get up off the lounge and slowly approach the nearest window to have a cautious look outside.
“I don’t think so.” The only thing you could see were the small pumpkin lights that boarded the front porch as they softly illuminated the stone in an orangey hume. Besides those small plastic pumpkin lights? There was nothing but darkness until the street.
“What’s that noise?” The man asked, trying to keep the conversation going. He sounded far too intrigued by you and your surroundings.
“I’m trying to watch a movie, now would you quit calling me?” You hissed through a huff as you made your way back to the couch. You were going to have to rewind your movie now, completely having lost track of where you were up to because of this lunatic.
“What movie is it?” This game was becoming old and cheap, you couldn’t help but to roll your eyes as you sat back down and fixed the fuzzy grey blanket that was one of Jake’s favourites. God you missed him, wished he was here. “The one you’re trying to watch?”
“IT, Chapter One.” There was a sharp, get to the point, I’m over this damn conversation tone in your voice as you picked up the remote to rewind the movie.
“Oh so it’s a scary movie?” The man sounded as if he raised an eyebrow at your explanation.
“Well I tell ya what Sherlock Holmes—“ Once again, you weren’t trying to be nice, so the sarcasm dripped from your mouth like liquid candy. “You’re onto something there.”
“Do you like scary movies?” He prolonged the question rather politely, but you didn’t miss the way his voice dropped an octave as your heart quickened inside your chest.
“I do—“ Your house was far too quiet for your liking as you spoke on the phone to this complete stranger. You’d all of a sudden lost all interest in your movie as you looked back to the front door. Did you lock it?
“What’s your favourite scary movie then?”
“I’m not sure, there’s a few that I could choose.” In an overprotective manner you walked back to the front door to check if it was locked. It was.
“Oh come on now, you’ve gotta have a favourite scary movie.” The man asked as he watched you walk around your house to check all the locks on all the windows and back door. “What comes to mind?”
“Fine, Halloween—“ None of your attempts to secure your humble abode would avail to anything. “You know, with the guy in the white mask that walks around stalking babysitters.” Because the man you were currently talking to was already inside your home. The home you shared with your loving, cock sure, flyboy boyfriend who was still in damn San Diego.
“Yeah, I know it.” The man replied softly, he was just trying to keep you on the line.
“So—what’s your favourite? Since you needed to know mine so desperately.” It even surprised you, but before you could stop yourself from entertaining this creeper any further the words had already escaped. You mentally had to slap yourself across the face for that one. That one was all on you.
“How about you guess?” The man chuckled as he watched you walk back from the back door to the living room where once again, you sat back down on the couch.
“Is it Nightmare on Elm Street?” Why oh why were you doing this to yourself?
“Is that the one where the guy had knives for fingers?” The man sounded like he had a smile on his face, like he was enjoying this a little too much. Like he was just waiting for the right moment to come around.
“Yeah, Freddie Kroger.” There was an ever increasing pit in your stomach that wouldn’t go away, something wasn’t right about this entire interaction. Who the fuck was this guy and why was he calling you on Halloween Eve.
“Freddie, yeah that’s right, I guess I do like that movie, it’s pretty scary, don’t you think?
“Well, the first one was but the rest sucked.” Again, why the fuck were you entertaining this guy.
“So—you gotta boyfriend?” There it was, the last of many red flags. The first three being the late night unknown phone calls.
“Why? Are you gonna ask me out on a date, Mr. Cold Call guy?” A little teasing wouldn’t do any harm you thought to yourself as you popped a piece of candy into your mouth.
“Maybe—“ The line went silent for a moment as your heart rang in your ears. “So? Do you have a boyfriend?”
“I do—“ You didn’t even need to lie, you did in fact have a very loved, very attractive, very not here at the moment boyfriend. “So, unfortunately for you there’s not gonna be a date.”
“How could there ever be a date when you still haven’t told me your name?”
“Why do you wanna know my name?” The next few seconds of time slowed down into nothing as your heart sank into your stomach and your head rang in fear. The man you’d been talking to with the rough voice and the polite responses had you turning seven colours of bad shit as he spoke.
“Because I wanna know who I’m looking at—“
“What did you just say?” You shot up off the couch as you looked around your home frozen in fear.
“I said I wanna know who I’m talking to.” The man tried to plan it off cool, calm and oh so collected but he knew he’d been heard and heard correctly.
“That’s not what you said.” You could feel your heart hammering against your chest like it was trying to escape, but your feet refused to move.
“What do you think I said?” He egged you on as you heard what sounded like footsteps coming from the laundry and tears began to well in your eyes.
“Look, I gotta go, this is starting to get fucking creepy and my boyfriends gonna be home any minute.” The man on the end of the line could hear the shake in your voice as you tried to hang up and get out of this situation. He chose to play on your fear a little more.
“Wait, I thought we were gonna go on a date?” He questioned rather quickly as you tried to regulate your breathing and get your feet to move. This wasn’t happening, this was like the beginning of some slasher 90’s horror movie where the ignorant girl gets killed for not using her brain.
“Nah—you’re dreaming.” You pulled the phone away from your ear but froze in fear when you heard the man scream down the phone at you.
“Don’t you fucking hang up on me.” He spat with venom in his tone.
“Listen asshole—“ You spat back as you finally let the anger overtake the fear inside you.
“No you listen here you little bitch—“ He argued back as he watched you storm into the kitchen looking for a weapon to defend yourself with, only then did you realise the knives in the knife block had all been removed. “Hang up on me and I’ll gut you like a fish!”
“Is this some sort of sick joke to you?” It was like nothing you had ever experienced before. God you wished Jake was here right now, he would have told you not to answer an unknown number.
“More like a game—“ You should have listened to the little voice of his that lived in your mind. You never should have answered the phone. “Can you handle that—Y/n?” The way he said you named made all the hair on the back of your neck stand to attention.
“Can you see me?” You asked as you looked out the window once more, when there wasn’t an immediate response you growled into the phone. “Listen, I am two seconds away from calling the police—“
“I don’t think they’re gonna make it in time sweetheart.” The man chuckled rather menacingly and it made your blood boil. “But they’ll definitely get here with just enough time to see what your insides look like.”
“Ahh!” The doorbell rang and you swore your heart nearly exploded when it did. “Who’s there!” You shouted as you back away, screaming and crying into the phone. “Who’s fucking there!”
“You should never say who’s there, don’t you watch scary movies?” The man chuckled. “It’s a deathwish.”
“You’ve well and truly had your fun, now please—leave me alone.” You whimper for mercy, this was all too much.
“Or else what?” The man asked curiously, he wanted to know exactly what you were going to do about all this. He was, after all, the one with the upper hand.
“Or else my boyfriend will be here any second and he’ll be pissed when he finds out what cruel sick bastards been harassing me!”
“Isn’t he outta town?” How did? How the hell did he know? Had you told the mystery man fucking with you.
“No!” You denied the fact that Jake was out of town, still stuck on base in San Diego when he should have been here. “No he’s not, and he’s big and fucking jacked and he flys fucking military planes for a damn living and he’ll kick the ever living shit out of you!” You shouted into your phone as you backed away from any door and window you could possibly get away from. Spinning around to make sure you had good enough vision of the whole house.
“Oh yeah?” The man laughed on the other end of the line. “Sure, I’m shaking in my boots honey.” There was no question he could tell he was scaring you beyond belief, he’d watched you for the better half of five minutes frantically rush around the house locking all the doors and windows. “His name wouldn’t happen to be Jake? would it?” This was going to be so much fun.
“How do you know his name?” There was a clear whimper in your voice as tears streamed down your cheeks. Fear was caught in your throat like a ball of wax, choking you completely.
“Turn around—“ Slowly, you hung up the phone you held with a vice grip and turned around. To your absolute horror, there he was, the man who had been on the phone with you. Only you recognised the outfit with ease—it was a GhostFace costume. A really good one too. One that wasn’t from Dollar General the night before Halloween. This one had been thought out, the costume had intent and it was detailed.
“Boo.” Was all he said as he took a step towards you. “Aw look at you.” He chuckled to himself as he approached and you remained still in complete and utter fear. “A little scared are you?”
“How—how did you get inside my house?” It was a stupid question to ask, but as the man in the GhostFace mask approached you, you felt like you couldn’t think, couldn’t speak, couldn’t breathe.
“You looked me in?” He simply explained as he showed you a shape, clearly brand new knife. “Now we’re all alone, with no one to interrupt.” It was slow, but the man behind the mask moved the knife closer and closer to your chin until he was using the knife's edge to tilt your chin up.
“I—“ Before you could speak, the man brought the knife down by his side and tilted his head. The silence that followed was all consuming as he just stared at your frozen, shaking and clearly terrified state.
“Y/n?” He growled from behind the mask, all you did was stare at the mask. That all consuming, all encompassing mask that made your heart beat so hard inside your chest you swore your sternum was about to break “Run.” Was all he barked and that’s all it took for your flight or flight to kick in.
“Help!” You shouted as you turned in the opposite direction and ran towards your front door. “Help me! Someone!” The masked man was right on your heels with heavy strides that made the timber flooding of your home creak with anticipation and excitement.
Oh to be hunted, oh to be caught.
You tried your best to get the front door unlocked in time but you just weren’t quick enough, or perhaps being caught was exactly what you wanted to happen. Just as you opened the front door and took two strides out onto the front porch—an all encompassing arm wrapped itself around your waist and the other wrapped itself around your mouth.
Your eyes shot out of your skull as you felt yourself being dragged back inside your house. Your feet slipped under the anxiety of it all and soon enough you were on the ground being dragged back across the living room by the man in the GhostFace mask.
“What’s the matter darlin’ I thought you said your boyfriend would be home any minute?” The man teased as he manhandled you up by your hair, forcing you up to your knees as your own hand came up to grip around his wrist, giving him two very firm squeezes in a row. Green, you were emerald green and everything in between as you clenched your teeth together and let your tears fall free. “I don’t see him anywhere?”
It was like nothing you’d ever felt before, the feeling of being completely overpowered by someone. Being told you had no control, no say.
“Fuck. You.” You spat as the man worked to pull off the black cloak he was wearing, revealing under a simple outfit of dark blue jean, a nice brown belt that matched the leather of his boots and a white-T.
“That’s exactly what you’re gonna do.” You didn't register what that meant at first, but as you watched the man in the mask unbuckle his belt with one hand as he held onto your hair tightly with the other, that's when you started to feel the all too familiar heat pooling between your legs.
“No!” You shouted as you tried to rip your hair out of his tight grasp. “No! Get away from me!” Kicking and screaming you tried your best to free yourself from your captor's hold, but it was to no avail.
“My cocks been aching for your mouth since I saw you pop that candy into it.” There was a distinct primal need dripping from every word the masked man spoke as he shoved his jeans and boxer briefs down ever so slightly to reveal what you had been anticipating since before your phone rang for the first time that night. “Now you’re gonna suck me off like a good fucking girl before I gut you.” The threat could’ve been taken suggestively or literally, but as the man pumped his entire fist around the throbbing velvet length right in front or your face, you could have sworn you drooled. But you couldn't break character, not yet, it was far too early and you wanted to see just how far this could actually go before you had to tap out.
“Get the fuck away from me!” You turned your face to the right to try and save yourself from the ever looming sexual act you knew you were about to perform. Pre-cum oozed from the throbbing tip that looked exactly like the colour of your boyfriend's lips. A mix between pink and red, the perfect soft flesh colour that you adored. It looked just as pretty on his cock, but you would tell him that, not right now.
Not when he was dressed up as your favourite Ghost Face Killer for Halloween Eve.
“Uh uh uh–” His voice still sounded like his, but with the mask it muffled the familiar twang you had leant to love. Without that comfort this felt all too real, you weren't going to lie and say you weren't a little scared. But that's exactly what you had asked for when Jake had agreed to do this for you. To play into one of your biggest and longest standing sexual fantasies. “Don't you turn that pretty mouth away from me, we’re just getting to know each other.”
“I'm not sucking your dick.” You hissed through gritted teeth as the masked man crouched down a little further and used his free hand to squish your cheeks together as you kneeled before him. “Fuck you!”
“You have two options here.” He growled from behind the mask, if you looked close enough, you could see those familiar lips of his behind the darkness. “Either you do what I say, everything, without a fucking fuss–” There was a very distinct pause that the masked man made you sit in contemplation in before he told you your second option. The one he knew you wouldn't like very much. “Oh i'll just kill you, right here right now, no one will hear you scream, no one will know who did it, you’ll become a forgotten first kill because let's face it sweetheart, no one really gives a shit unless you're a final girl.”
There had to be someone psychologically wrong with your brian and how it was hard wired to experience pleasure, because in that moment, in that very millisecond of time, your core throbbed at the thought of being used against your very willing will. The idea of consensual non consent had been brought up a few times, by you of course. Jake took a little while to come around. He wasn’t too keen on the whole idea of forcing himself on you, he wasn’t sure how it all worked, but once he understood the concept, once he understood how to act and how to communicate while you were deep, deep in that subspace scene he knew you loved, it became as easy as riding a bike for him to please you.
“Well?” It was like he could see the cogs turning inside your mind as your eyes never left his from behind the mask. “What’s it gonna be?” When you didn’t answer and instead involuntarily shook in his grasp, Jake took a split second to check in on you. He stood up slowly, letting the hand that had once been squeezing your cheeks caress the side of your face as he pulled you closer to his hardened sex by your hair. “What colour?”
“Green.” You replied and within a second, Jake had made your mind up for you and was guiding his tip between your lips.
“Suck my dick sweetheart, come on, be a good girl for me.” It was hard to pretend to protest, but you tried to keep your mouth shut until Jake was gripping your hair a little tighter until you gasped at the pain. “That’s it, good fucking girl.”
With eager hips Jake growned at the feeling of your mouth taking him in, so warm and tight around his throbbing girth. The mask he wore, the one that seemed to get you off to the heights of heights was humid from his open mouth breathing. But like hell was he about to ruin this roll play, he’d rather pass the fuck out than ruin the illusion the both of you had so perfectly orchestrated.
“Oh god your boyfriend’s a lucky guy isn’t he?” You couldn’t help but to look up as the man in the mask looked down at you. Fuck—your panties were soaking, arousal pooled between your folds as you felt the very tip of his cock hit the back of your throat.
The eye contact was intense, you knew it was Jake but something about that damn mask had your head spinning so violently that your eyes watered with fear and need. You wanted to fight, to run, to fake the unwillingness to cooperate just to see how far Jake would go.
“Don’t fight it baby—“ He growled as you strained to stop your head from bobbing up and down his length. “You’re doing such a good job, fucking whore of a thing aren’t you?” The feeling of his slightly calloused hands keeping your head right where he needed it to be was pure pleasure—being used like this, being told what to do even if you didn’t want to do it. “Fuck look at those tears, what are they for huh?”
The man in the Ghostface mask, your boyfriend, Jake, dragged his thumb across your cheek to collect the tears that fell as he fucked your face to a rhythm that had him weak in the knees.
“Ohhh god I’m so glad I didn’t decide to kill you straight away. Stupid girl—“ He went on to say as the tip of his hardened and throbbing cock bashed against your throat, making you gag around him before he held you still. He made sure that you couldn’t breathe, not while you were choking on him and only him. “Maybe this will teach you not to answer unknown numbers, there’s some fucked up people in this world sweetheart.” He teased as you pushed against his jean clad thighs, trying to push him away so that you could feel the sweet relief of oxygen returning to your lungs. “What did I just fucking say huh!?”
“Let me ggoo—!” You screamed as the man in the mask pulled himself out of your mouth and let you go. He watched with a curious held hilt as you crawled away crying and gasping for air. “Get away from me!”
Jake pumped his hand up and down his shaft a few laboured times before he stuffed himself back into his jeans and went after you with heavy strides. You hadn’t gotten far, but oh how thrilling and invigorating was it to be hunted in your own home.
“Gee that boyfriend of yours is running real behind on schedule isn’t he?” The man in the mask chuckled as he rounded the corner into the kitchen, you were hiding just behind the countertop. “Come out, come out wherever you are.” He cooed childish as he stepped slowly, the floorboard squeaked under his boot as he did so. “Y/n, I know you’re in here sweetheart, why don’t you come out so I can cut you up.”
You were careful not to make a sound as you placed your hands over your mouth and pulled your knees up close to your chest. Every second that passed? Your heart threatens to break out of your body. You knew deep down that the guy in the mask was Jake, but he was doing this a little too well.
“You wanna play psycho killer?” You mumbled under your breath. You really didn’t know how you were going to get away, but you knew that the man in the mask was about to come around the corner and see you hiding clear as day. “Fine!!”
As soon as Jake rounded the corner he was met with you first to his stomach with enough force that it had him doubling over. His moment of weakness gave you five seconds to run out of the kitchen and straight up the stairs. The plan all along has been to eventually end up in your bedroom.
As you ran down the hall towards your bedroom, the man in the mask was quick to catch up. After all, this man was a highly skilled Naval Aviator who was fighting fit. You never stood a chance at getting away.
“Ahhhh!” When you saw him in the mirror standing right behind you as you looked for a place to hide, you couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think straight. This was what it was like to be hunted down, used, tormented.
“What’s the matter Y/n?” The man teased as he tilted his head and stepped towards you, pointing the knife he held in his hand your way. “It looks like you’ve seen a ghost.”
“Leave me alone!!” The sound that came from you was something straight out of a horror movie as the man stepped closer and closer, completely ignoring your cries and pleas for him to stop.
“Get on the bed—“ Was all he demanded as he pointed the knife to the mattress. “I said, get on the fucking bed!”
“You’re gonna have to force me or kill me because I’m not letting you touch me again.” The standoff continued in the all consuming silence of your bedroom as your core throbbed and soaked your delicate panties. This was it, all the talks, the explanations, the ideas. They all boiled down to this moment.
You trusted Jake Seresin with your life, so much so you let him in on a fantasy of yours, a kink so deep and nasty that you’d never told any of your ex boyfriends about. You didn’t trust them to do this with you. But Jake? Ten fold.
“Colour?” It would be one of the last check in points before you got exactly what you wanted, what you so desperately craved. Jake remained in character as he once again looked you right in the eyes through his mask.
“Green.” At your whimperious admission, Jake lunged at you with so much force it truly knocked the wind right out of your lungs. He had you pinned on the mattress within seconds of your admission. “GET OFF ME!”
“Shut the fuck up.” The man’s hand came up to tightly wrap about your throat, squeezing the sides to restrict your breathing. “Now listen here and listen good, I’m gonna fuck you real good, and after you cum all over me—I’m gonna make sure no one ever finds out what happened to poor sweet Y/n when she was murdered in her own damn home.”
You were manhandled by your neck and hips to flip over onto your stomach into that position you knew your body loved the most. Doggy style. Something about the angel always sent Jake's length so deep you swore the tip of his cock kissed your cervix with every thrust.
You felt the edge of the man’s sharp blade run slowly over the fabric of your pyjama shirt, directly down your spine as you shivered under the touch.
“I bet you're a tight little thing.” Too afraid to move, you felt the elastic of your pyjamas pants slipping past your hips until the chill of your bedroom kissed your exposed cheeks. “Holy fuck look at you, you’ve ruined your panties.” The man growled as you heard him shimmering out of his jeans behind you. “Someone likes to be taunted, don’t you darlin’?”
Again you could do anything but remain silent and shaking in fear as you felt the man’s hands trail up under your shirt, across your smooth ass and finally down between your dripping folds. The anticipation was all consuming.
“That boyfriend of yours is a lucky guy—“ You saw a flash of white light illuminate your bedroom for a brief moment as you felt a hand pressing your head down into the mattress. Holy mother of god he’s taking photos. “I’ll need these for later.” He admitted as another flash went off. Photo after photo.
“Please, please don’t do this—“ You cried as you felt the tip of his cock sliding up and down through your folds. Collecting all your arousal as he did so to slick up his length to fit right inside. “Please—“
“I love it when they beg.” Was all the masked man said before he was pushing himself inside you. Your eyes rolled so far back into your head at the overwhelming pleasure that you swore you saw your own soul. “Ohh fughh—such a pretty pussy you’ve got, go on, scream for me darlin, no one's gonna hear you.”
“AHHHH!” With every frightful, pleasurable thrust you screamed into the mattress. “Stop! Stop please!”
“Oh but you feel so fucking good.” The man growled as his free hand that wasn’t pressing your face into the mattress came up to slap your ass. You jolted from the sting. “Look at that, so reactive.”
Again you felt another sharp slap as the man behind you quickened his pace.
“Ah fuck!”
“That’s it baby, I know you love it—“ The man let go of your head as his hands came to hold
Your hips tighter than ever before, pulling you back into him as you tried to get away. “I know you love this, being used, don’t run away, stay right here on my cock.”
Jake didn’t let up as he fucked deep and hard into your push from behind. You couldn’t see the mask, but the idea of him wearing it was even to have you seeing stars. Every thrust brought you closer to that ever looming orgasm that threatened to crash over you and every slap against your ass sent you further and further into that sun space where you could just feel and exist.
“Dirty fucking thing look at you, fucking a killer.” The man taunted you as he pulled you up by your hair so that your back was flush against his chest. When did he remove his shirt? Was it when he took his jeans off? Did he also take the mask off? “Unbutton your shirt.” He hissed as he slowed down the pace to a barely there rhythm. You could feel his cock pulsing inside you like it was dying to coat your velvet walls.
“I said!” The man held the knife to your throat as he fucked you slowly from behind, keeping your back pressed against his chest. “Unbutton your shirt—“
With shaking hands and the inability to fully comprehend how pleasure filled and ignited your nerve endings were, you slowly but surely unbuttoned your shirt, leaving you in nothing but your bra. The black lace one Jake adored to no end.
It matched the panties you’d ruined, the ones the man had dragged down your legs along with your pyjamas pants.
“What colour?” When you didn’t answer straight away Jake frowned behind his Ghostface mask and dragged the knife away from your neck along your sternum towards your core. “Sweetheart, it’s me, I’m here, what colour are you?” The gentle words broke through the blinding spell of the role play situation you were in. It was all fake, you were safe, Jake would never do anything to hurt you. “It’s me, just me.”
“Green—“ That was all Jake needed before he was pushing you back down onto the mattress, he manhandled you expertly so that he was on top, sliding back into you like you were his home, like you were made just for him. “Ahh! Fuck!!”
“Naughty little thing—“ He growled behind the mask that hovered over you. His hips slammed into yours as he hovered over you with a hand on either side of your body. “I can feel you trembling.”
That coil had begun to wind to new heights as you wrapped your legs around Jake's waist and dragged your nails down his back. You were getting close, oh so close to that orgasmic euphoria you’d been searching for since that first phone call.
“Ohh fuck yes I can feel you gripping my dick, ohhh fuck, that’s it sweetheart, bet you wish that boyfriend of yours could see you like this huh?” The taunting mixed with the rhythm of Jake's rutts we’re sending you towards the edge of the cliff face you wanted so desperately to jump off. The mask that was staring you right in the face though, that’s what was doing it the most for you. “You wanna come? Wanna cum like a little whore all over my dick?”
Needy little cries were all you could reply with as the man in the mask trailed one hand down between your bodies to circle the pad of his thumb against your sensitive bundle of nerves. “I’m close too, which means you’re gonna be full of my cum, dripping, completely stuffed full of my load.” He moaned through the mask as your back arched and your eyes rolled. You were so deep into your sun space Jake hardly recognised the please in your eyes. “Colour?”
“I’m coming!” It was all you had the energy to say before your cries and whimpers and desperate pleas all mixed together into a babbling mantra of euphoric high. Your back arched all the way up till your stomach was pressed against Jakes and he was following within seconds. Seeing you like this, so spent and fucked out and blissfully under control made the orgasm that was pooling at the base of his shaft shoot up to overcome his entire being.
“Ah shit! Fuck fuck fuck fuck, baby yes—ahhhh Christ!” It was one of the most intense orgasms Jake Seresin had ever had. The load he pumped inside you was thick and heavy and dripped around his shaft as he continued to fuck you deeper and fuck you through your own high.
His back bled from your nails scraping down his muscles, but he didn’t mind, they were worth it to see you like this.
The second he could, Jake was taking the Ghostface mask off and coaxing you to look at him while he was still buried deep inside you. Tears welled in your eyes as old tears stained your cheeks. His gentle touch made you jump.
“Shhh baby it’s me, just me.”
“Jake.” You sobbed as he came down to kiss your lips as gently as ever before trailing those same soft kisses across your collarbone as you came down.
“It’s just me darlin’ you did so well for me.” He whispered sweet nothings across your fiery skin. “You played along so well.” Jake knew you were gonna take a while to come down, he knew it would take a while for you to process everything, from the phone call to the oral to the knife okay. But he already had a plan in place and a surprise organised for you tomorrow night.
“I’m gonna run us a bath.” Jake mumbled against your skin as he left a few marks behind in his wake. You swallowed heavily in response as your body continued to experience the after effects of being so deep into role play. “I love you so much, thankyou for letting me in, for letting me bring your fantasies to life.”
“Are you staying with me in the bath?” You could barely speak as Jake helped you up, handing you your pyjama short back as he dismounted from your bed. His cock remained flaccid and coated in a mix of your arousal and his cum.
It was just as important to receive the aftercare than to experience the high. Jake was good like that, and you’d discussed this beforehand with him. That you’d need time to come down after and just be held and brought back to earth. Jake was more than accommodating to your needs.
“Absolutely, I’m not going anywhere.” You managed a smile as you watched Jake pick up the Ghostface mask and stare at it. “You know there were two of these guys right?” Jake smirked as he threw it over onto your bedside table. “Kinda makes you wonder how far we could take this role play kink of yours.”
“Who’d be your Stu Macher?” You asked as you stood from the bed to give Jake a kiss so gently it was like the wings of a butterfly had handed against his cheeks. “It’s bath time Loomis.” You cooed as you patted Jake's shoulder twice. “Come on.”
“I’ll wash your hair for you.” Jake followed you into the bathroom eagerly before he shut the door behind him. It was good to be home.
“This is awesome.” Javy beamed when he saw you and Jake at the annual Seresin family Halloween party. The Daggers had all been granted a week's grace and they all decided to utilise the time off to attend the celebration. “Sidney and Billy, that’s awesome.”
“If only he knew—“ Jake whispered in your ear as you giggled and pushed at his chest. You were still buzzing from your night with Jake. High on the ecstasy his Ghostface impersonation gave you. “Come on now, don’t act all shy.” Jake teased as he kissed you tenderly, tilting your chin up with his index finger. The costume was really making you dizzy, you were still all consumed by your burning desire to act out your wildest fantasies.
“Oh.” You felt your phone ringing in your back pocket. “Huh.” You had to laugh at the irony. “It’s an unknown number?” You turned your phone to Jake as he smirked and nodded.
“You should answer it.” After all, he did have a surprise for you. “Go on now, don’t be shy.” With confusion laced into the lines and fake blood on your face, you swipt your phone along the screen and held it to your ear all the while you kept eye contact with Jake.
“Hello?” You asked cautiously, still not sure what the hell was going on.
“Wanna play a game?” Bradley spoke through the phone as you caught sight of him behind Jake’s shoulder. Dressed in that all too familiar ghost face costume. After all, there were always two killers.
Hot take that shouldn’t be a hot take:
my biggest pet peeve is when people tag something as a x reader but it’s actually an oc…..i got to the last chapter of a fic only for the description of the ‘reader’ to be of a white person.
then the author got nasty with me after i called her out about it but that’s whatever
it takes an extra 2 mins to have a generic description of a person rather then give the details of their appearance but some of y’all are just too lazy to do even that
Jake Seresin never thought he would settle.
Jake Seresin never thought he would come home to freshly baked dinner almost every night.
Jake Seresin never thought he would come home from deployment with pure joy.
Jake Seresin never thought he would be a dad.
Jake Seresin also never thought he would be a husband. A great one.
But here he was being the best of him for his family.
One night, with his wife peacefully laying beside him and their two beautiful babies sleeping soundly in their shared room,Jake Seresin couldn't help but reflect on how the story of their love had begun.
As he lay there, the soft glow of the moonlight filtering through the curtains illuminated the room, casting a gentle aura over the scene. The hushed sounds of nighttime surrounded them, creating a tranquil atmosphere that contrasted with the high-octane tales of Jake’s daring adventures.
His mind drifted back to the Hard Deck, where the neon lights and pulsating beats had set the stage for their first meeting. Jake couldn't shake the memory of that night – the electric connection, the shared laughter, and the undeniable chemistry that had sparked between them. Little did he know that the chance encounter in the bar would evolve into a love story that now filled their shared space with warmth and joy.
August 18 2018:
The Hard Deck pulsed with the kind of energy that seemed to defy gravity, much like the Jake Seresin himself. Bright lights painted the room in vivid hues, casting an electric but also soft glow over the animated crowd. You, just another face in the buzzing sea of people, found solace in the dimly lit corner of the bar.
And then, he swaggered in, a living legend in khaki uniform and aviator sunglasses Jake Seresin, the talk of the town. His sandy blond,sleek hair and the unmistakable cocky grin made your heart flutter unexpectedly. As if guided by some unseen force, he ended up at the bar right beside you.
The air crackled with unspoken tension, a silent dialogue of glances exchanged beneath the pulsating beats. Penny must have noticed the incident because she leaned over to your ear and whispered encouragingly for you to break the ice.
"Fly any cool jets lately?" you asked, your attempt at nonchalance betrayed by the slight quiver in your voice,it wasn't expected.
He shot you a smirk, a glint of mischief in his eyes, and the conversation took off like a supersonic jet. Jake's tales of high-flying adventures and near misses filled the air, weaving a spell that drew you into his orbit. The chaotic sounds of the bar faded away as you found yourself captivated by his world.
“Do you think they are having fun?” Phoenix asked Rooster while sipping her beer.
“Nah,i guess not”
But your and his laughter became the soundtrack of the night, shared stories creating a bridge between two strangers who felt strangely connected.
The Hard Deck, with its bright ambiance and heady atmosphere, became the backdrop to a love story written in stolen glances and genuine smiles.
In the heartbeat of that night, you realized that Jake Seresin was not just a daring pilot but a soul with whom you shared an undeniable connection. The clinking of glasses and the distant hum of conversations faded into the background, leaving only the vibrant chemistry that sparked between you and the real-life Hangman, as the Hard Deck transformed into the unexpected stage for the beginning of something extraordinary.
And both of you were grateful for Hard Deck and Penny that night.
October 10 2019:
Life with Jake was fun.
Life with Jake was an exhilarating journey, an adventure marked by laughter, spontaneity, and a touch of unpredictability. From the moment he entered your world, it was as if a burst of vibrant energy had been injected into the everyday routine, transforming the mundane into a thrilling escapade.
His infectious zest for life was like a magnetic force, pulling you into a whirlwind of excitement. Every day was an opportunity for new experiences, whether it was exploring uncharted places or simply finding joy in the ordinary. Jake's playful spirit infused even the simplest moments with a sense of fun and wonder.
Together, you navigated the ups and downs with a shared sense of humor that made challenges feel more like temporary detours than roadblocks. Life with Jake was a rollercoaster of laughter, a soundtrack of inside jokes and spontaneous adventures that left a trail of fond memories.
What made it even more special was Jake's ability to find joy in the little things. Whether it was a spontaneous road trip, a homemade dinner, or just a quiet evening at home, he had a knack for turning the ordinary into something extraordinary.
It was in those everyday moments that you discovered the true meaning of happiness – the joy of simply being with someone who knew how to make every moment count.
Life with Jake wasn't just fun; it was a celebration of love, friendship, and shared experiences. He taught you that life's journey is not just about reaching a destination but about savoring the joy of the ride. With Jake by your side, every day was an opportunity to embrace the thrill of the unknown, and you wouldn't have had it any other way.
Especially after little over a year, Jake knelt on one knee one morning as both of you were preparing breakfast. As you turned around in your seat to grab the toast, you saw him on just one knee, holding a blue velvet box, delicately opening it to reveal a slim, gold ring with a dainty not so big diamond in the center – a thoughtful choice you knew he had made, understanding how he moved in minimalist jewelry.
"I had a speech, and - aside from the fact that I have a lot of things to say about you but, I don't remember anything else now and more than that but look I'm madly in love with you. And ı can't think of a day where ı open my eyes and not see you or going to bed without you being the last person ı talk to and I just - Screw it, Y/N, I can't imagine a life without you in it, and just - marry me, please?"
His eyes were already shining before taking a deep breath, his lips trembling as he bitten his lower lip, his lips already pink, and there he was proposing in his black fitted shirt and in his red gingham pajama bottom.
You screamed, placing your hands over your heart, shaking your head as you cried, "Yes! Yes, oh my God, yes, hundred times yes!" Before you could even stand up, you found yourself throwing yourself to the floor, where he hugged you tightly.
Also, you remember that celebrating only with close friends and family in your home was very humble.
You didn't know too many people and you two didn't want a huge ceremony. So the backyard was the cutest place to get married.
As your bridesmaids Phoenix, Halo, and Penny took responsibility for decorating the backyard of your shared home with all the decors, illuminating the trees and walls.
The moment Jake saw you in the simple white wedding dress, it became a moment etched forever in everyone's mind who was present.
He was crouched, pulling you inside for a hug before closing his open mouth in disbelief; you were also laughing shyly as you pulled him to yourself.
He wore a white suit, with pink embroidered flowers on the sides resembling the headpiece you wore.
Polaroids were taken, all the photos were captured on film, making everything about the night,everyone was having the time of their lives.
Whole dagger squad was there and they were the life and the soul of the party.
Jake’s sisters,his family and your siblings and family were there.
Even admiral Beau came. Maverick brought him; he also brought Ice.
The night was more fun, more enchanting and more emotional than anyone expected.
“They said, "I bet they'll never make it"
But just look at us holding on
We're still together, still going strong..”
January 30 2020:
Three years ago, on January 30, you remember telling Jake that you were pregnant. Technically, you screamed it out.
Both of you decided to attend Shania Twain’s show at Madison Square Garden, given your shared admiration for her.
He just came from a 4 week deployment and you knew he needed a break, especially during tense times.
So you planned a trip to New York because he loved there but honestly who doesn't love New York?
But something happened almost before 5 days before the trip.
You got sick. It all started with a lack of appetite, and then suddenly, you felt like eating everything and anything. You blamed hormones until morning sickness kicked in.
If there was one thing you absolutely hated, it was nausea. You remember waking up shaking and retching, your body still feeling the need to rush to the toilet despite not having eaten anything that morning.
For the first three days of these incidents, you were alone. Jake was about to return from the deployment.
Not wanting to disturb him and worry him, you didn't tell him anything.
Whenever he asked why you looked unwell, you simply told him it was just nausea and nothing serious.
One day after Jake went out with Bradley, you remember calling your best friend,Phoenix, asking her to bring you a pregnancy test, choosing to avoid any tabloid talk.
Your heart was pounding, legs bouncing,palms sweaty, and nausea had already begun when you followed the instructions, waiting anxiously.
And then it happened; a scream of disbelief, one hand covering your mouth while the other tightly held the test - you were pregnant.
You remember Jake loving many things, many people, and many abstract ideas like love. You knew he loved babies and kids, often talking about them with you, mentioning seeing you both building a family.
So, after visiting the obstetrician and learning you were five weeks pregnant, you were dazed and excited to tell Jake but decided to do it in a different setting.
Four days after your visit, you and Jake were at Madison Square Garden singing along with Shania Twain.
You stood in front of Jake, leaning your back against him, his arms wrapped around your waist, your hands holding onto his arms, both of you swaying to “You’re still the one’ " while his chin rested on your shoulder.
When you moved slightly to look at him, Jake gazed back at you while singing.
“You're still the one I run to
The one that I belong to
You're still the one I want for life
You're still the one that I love
The only one I dream of
You're still the one I kiss goodnight..”
He kissed your lips and lightly tapped your forehead. Slowly pulling back, he smiled at you.
And then you said it.
"I'm pregnant."
His eyebrows shot up, leaning closer, "I can't hear you!"
You grinned, turning in his arms, "I'm pregnant! Five weeks pregnant!"
His world stopped, mouth forming an 'O' shape as his eyes widened,
"Y/N, are you kidding?!"
With a surprised smile, he asked, lips stretching into a grin, "My love, are you for real?" he asked.
Nodding with joy, you brought his hand from his cheek to your stomach, saying, "You're going to be a dad!"
His breakdown, tears streaming down, biting his lip as he threw his head back, red-nosed,his adam apple bobbing and crying with veins visible on his forehead, hugging you before crying into your shoulder – the only thing he needed to cry into before crying to your shoulder.
His eyes were teary as he held you, feeling him pulling back to rest his forehead against yours, moving his hands to the sides of your neck, "I love you. I love you so much," pulling you back into a hug, one hand moving towards the back of your head, the other on your back, and bringing you closer.
The 9 month pregnancy was smooth and emotional.
The 9 months of your pregnancy were painful, but there wasn't much else to feel aside from your love for Jake's incredible support and assistance and your admiration for your daughter, Emma Seresin.
Since the moment Emma came into the world, you knew she had wrapped her tiny finger around Jake's.
Your daughter was a bond between both of you, but you took pride in her character and personality at such a young age.
When Emma turned 3, you felt proud of how you and Jake could chat with her, even if it was about Jake’s job or hard topics like that and you loved every moment of him talking about how much Emma loved strawberry chapstick or how her nail color was important for her.
On a day when a familiar nausea and change in appetite reminded you of a late period, one question lingered in your mind.
So, over a meal, you brought it up to your husband, who was struggling to eat with your daughter in his lap.
Long story short, you were pregnant – again.
June 26 2023:
You, your husband, and your daughter were sitting in your backyard, allowing Emma to get some vitamin D. While you were writing in your journal, both of you were on the swings, and Emma was playing with her toys and running around, Jake was reading a book beside you.
‘’Mommy?’’
"Yes, sweetheart?"
She ran towards you, putting both of her hands on her knees before looking at your eight-month-pregnant belly and grinning, "What's in there?"
Jake chuckled, putting his book aside to pay closer attention.
"Your baby sibling is in there," you smiled at her.
"But how? Can I sit in there too?"
You and Jake chuckled at her question. "You used to sit in there, darling. But then, you were born three years ago."
Emma frowned, looking at you. "I want to go back in."
You looked at Jake, silently asking for his help.
Before lifting her into your lap, he leaned forward, hands wrapping around her underarms. "But your sibling won't have enough space then."
"I don't care," she whined, crossing her arms and looking down while talking, her lips quivering.
"Your sibling needs all the space to grow up and play with you. Don't you want that?" You asked gently, one hand on your knee.
"But he'll take my toys."
"You can share all your toys with him, sweetheart. He'll share his toys with you too." You chuckled, fearing she wouldn't like her sibling. It was something neither you nor Jake was ready for.
"But, but, you and dad will buy more toys for him.I don't want him." She said with a whimper, arms crossed and looking down, her lips trembling.
You and Jake shared a look before turning back to your three-year-old.
"Emma," Jake gently called her name, looking at her without lowering his gaze, "Sweetie, look at me, please." Emma slowly looked at Jake, allowing both of you to see her teary eyes. "You know Mommy and Daddy love you, and we'll always love you, right?"
You reassured her, saying, 'We love you very much, baby, and nothing will change that,'" you said, placing one hand on your knee, "We're excited for your sibling to meet you. He loves you too."
"Didn't you get excited the other day to show him your room?" Jake asked, rubbing her back gently.
"Yes," she murmured.
"You have so much to show and teach him. You can be his first best friend. Isn't that nice?"
As if understanding what was said, Emma slowly nodded her head.
"We love you, sweetheart. Forever," Jake said, leaning to give her a kiss on the forehead.
Emma turned to her father, crossing her arms and raising two fingers, one for you and one for Jake, "Promise?"
As if your hearts melted right there, you would cry as you locked your pinky finger with hers, watching Jake do the same.
"We promise."
But nobody warned you about the hell you'd go through when your daughter started to envy Calvin.
The day Emma entered the hospital room, holding hands with Javy, and looked at you lying in the hospital bed next to Calvin, making baby sounds as he moved his arms and legs,his eyes wide open, you knew it was somehow going good.
She seemed very welcoming.
Jake sat on the other side of his son, playing with your hair as a non-verbal way to thank you and comfort you after the pain you went through. His lips were fixed in a smile; his heart was pounding with happiness at the addition of the new healthy family members.
Emma looked at her parents, unable to see the middle sibling. She was overwhelmed because she knew she would meet her brother.
"Hello, sweetheart!" Jake grinned at her, bending slightly and opening his arms. Before kissing her cheek, he hugged her tightly as he carried her to sit on his hip, watching her eyes immediately shift to the newborn baby.
"Meet Calvin, buddy." Tired but with a smile on your face, you spoke, hoping she would take the change lightly.
Well, at least you hoped so.
But as Emma threw herself onto Jake, burying her head on his shoulder, crying, it was expected.
Javy and his wife didn't know how to help. Just like Bradley and Natasha.
"Hey, hey, what's the problem?" Jake asked, rubbing her back as she cried.
"I don't like him," Emma said, dragging him, her arms wrapped around Jake's neck.
You both know she wasn't a kid like this and it surprised you both.
Your heart broke, and Jake's smile faded as if triggered by the screams of your daughter, Calvin started crying too. You sat down, gently picking him up into your arms, placing him against your chest, soothing him, and supporting the back of his head as you pleaded for almost everything to be done by him.
Until Jake locked onto Emma after realizing she was causing the crying. He got out of the small room and stopped in the corridor, holding her, bouncing softly to calm her down.
"Come on, baby, please calm down," he said with a sigh, "Why don't you like Calvin?" he muttered, rubbing her back.
Emma sniffled, pulled back, but while keeping her father's head down, she moved her hand to touch Jake's necklace - the one you and Emma gave him on Father's Day, "Because-because-because he's little and needs more attention, and you won’t love me anymore.."
Jake sat in a chair, still holding his daughter in the same way. "What makes you think that?"
"He will have more love because he's little and needs more attention."
Jake took a deep breath and let the words drown him. While it was true that the little one needed necessary and more attention, he didn't know how to explain to the older one that it wasn't the case.
"When you were a little baby," he started, looking at her, "Mommy and Daddy were everywhere with you. You wanted your parents,us, with you all the time. You cried when we were asleep, spit up too much on us," Jake chuckled to himself, remembering those moments and realizing how everything felt like just yesterday, "You always wanted your mommy and daddy with you. And we never left you," he finished, "So, what makes you think we'd leave you now, sweetheart?"
Emma didn't respond.
"Your brother can't talk yet. He can't say when he's hurt, he doesn't even know the taste of your favorite blueberry pancakes. And we have to make sure he does all these things just like you. But the thing is," Jake leaned to whisper in her ear as if sharing a secret, "Mommy and Daddy can't do it alone. We can't do it without you."
Emma slowly looked at Jake, her face with furrowed eyebrows.
"We promised, sweetheart. We promised to love you forever. Have we ever broken a promise?" He watched her nod, "And we won't. So what do you say? Can you give your brother a chance? Actually, he's quite funny." Jake smiled at her.
"Is he funnier than you?" She asked.
Jake laughed, "Much funnier! You just have to look closely."
Emma giggled quietly.
"Mommy is so excited for you to meet Calvin, do you know that? She was telling me about all the numbers you can teach him, all the pictures you two will take. And what he'll get you for Christmas."
"Can he get me a book about stars? With pictures?" She asked excitedly.
Jake grinned, filled her face with kisses, and heard her giggle, knowing it was one of his favorite sounds, "Tell him."
When Jake stopped, Emma sighed, lowering her shoulder, "Okay, Daddy. I'll say to him.."
"Thank you." He smiled gratefully, "Shall we go back?"
When your husband hugged your daughter and walked in with her in his arms, you couldn't know what to expect until you saw your them
Shy and embarrassed Emma, after sharing a glance with Javy,and hugged Jake after returning to her place.
Calvin had also returned to his place, and silence had returned.
Emma looked at him again, finally noticing how small his hands were, and got curious. Reluctantly, she leaned down a bit with the intention of poking his hand.
But the moment she touched him, it was the moment Calvin wrapped his fingers around hers, making her smile.
"He's holding my finger!" She squealed with delight, "You were right, Daddy. He is funny."
"Yes, you just need to get to know him a bit more," Jake said, bending down and kissing Calvin’s hand before looking at you and whispering an ‘’ı love you so much’’
He was happy that you were still the one to love.
02.05 am February 17:
There was a tired smile formed on his face after he thought about memories.
Beside him, his wife, you stirred in your sleep, a serene expression on your face.
That made him realize how late it was.
Jake turned to face your sleeping form. Moved some stray of your hair and kissed your soft cheek. and while he was looking at you he noticed something.. Jake's heart swelled with gratitude for the life you both had built together.
Your shared room became a sanctuary, adorned with the echoes of laughter,after some rough night; soft pantings and ‘’ı love you’s’’, sometimes a place where you comforted each other and the soft breathing of your sleeping kids, and the quiet acknowledgment of a love that had deepened with time.
In the stillness of the night, surrounded by the tangible evidence of your shared journey – the woman he loved, you, and the two precious souls you both had brought into the world together– Jake couldn't help but marvel at the unexpected beauty of how their story had unfolded. The Hard Deck, with its bright yellow lights and adrenaline-fueled beginnings, now seemed like a distant, yet cherished, memory in the symphony of their family life.
And he was grateful that you were still the one who he kissed for goodnight.
head canons of you being a top gun pilot (and in a relationship with hangman)
you and hangman falling in love during pilot school (pre-TGM) headcanons
----
Pilot school week 12
You woke up in an empty bed, not that it surprised you as flashbacks of a few hours before came to your mind
You and hangman were both still heavy breathing, each on their side of the small bed in silence
‘you seem cold, come here’ he told you, it was the fourth time he had used this excuse to hold you for five minutes before leaving after your mutual hate banging that started four weeks before, making you two become from rivals to rivals with benefits
You were literally in a pool of sweat but you craved this sort of nonsexual contact that had began to blossom between you two, so you had moved against his chest as he placed his arms around you. You two staid strangely silent as those 5 minutes, turned in 20 then an hour and you both were sound asleep
When hangman woke up it was already morning, he wasn’t in his room and as he turned in the bed he saw you sleeping, you looked beautiful and relaxed almost innocent.
He panicked. He never stays sleeping with you, it was a clear rule between your two hate banging turned in regular rivals with benefits and no feelings. He stood up careful not to wake you, dressed up and ran away. He would never admit it but he had not slept that good in years
Not even a note he had left. That dickhead. But that was normal was part of the deal than why it hurt your heart to not wake up in his arms as you had fallen asleep to?
Your rolled on your side of the bed and went back sleeping there were still half an hour before you had to report for duty
Pilot school week 16
You both woke up at the same time stirring against each others
‘oh you are still here’ you joked to try to cover the fact of how much he was handsome in his tangled hair and sleepy eyes, his arm still under your neck as your legs were intertwined with his under the sheets that covered not much of either of you
‘Fuck must have fallen asleep. see you in class Avenger’ he said trying not to make a big deal about how your skin touched by the mourning light seemed even more soft, how beautiful you looked with you hair all messed up, hair that he had messed up
‘such a gentlemen bagman’ you replied rolling your eyes
‘oh I’m sorry. Do you want a quickie before I go?’ he asked smirking and showing off as the blanket fell leaving him bare
‘fuck of’ you replied throwing him his shirt that was on the floor
Pilot school week 22
You woke up in hangman arms, his head resting next to yours as his strong arms kept you in a safe hug, your stirred up waking him up ‘hey’ he mumbled quietly pecking your lips
‘hey’ you replied trying not to smile.
Things were different since yesterday night you could feel it. He had asked you to dance and opened up about his difficult childhood then when you two got home you made love, not just meaningless s3x, you could see it, feel it in the way he had kissed you and touched you and you would never admit it to yourself or him, but you loved him, you were sure of it
You rolled out of his embrace to look at him. he smiled at you and moved a stray of your hair before pecking your lips ‘good morning’ he told you as his fingertips lingered on your cheek
‘good morning’ you replied, and as he looked at you with such a soft look you could almost not recognize him, until his face changed. His mind traveling miles, he could not let you in, you could never love him, he did not deserve you, he would just get hurt, so he decided to hurt you first
‘we should go get breakfast’ he said getting up and letting you go, your face fell, your heart broken as you tried to suppress your fainted smile
‘you are right’
Somewhere in the Atlantic, pilots of two years
It was a normal day, you were dispatched somewhere in the Atlantic. you were sleeping in your small cabin, jake’s arms around your torso, his face inches away from your neck as you both slept on the same pillow. You loved waking up as you fell asleep in the arms of the pilot you loved.
The alarm clock went of you reach it on the bedside and turn it off ‘jake’ you mumble
He stirs, snuzzling his nose in your neck. ‘morning beautiful’ he tells you smiling, you turn so that you can look at him, and place your hand on his cheek caressing it. He gently takes it and kisses your palm before leaning in and kissing your lips ‘morning hotshot’ you tell him as he smiles widely
‘waking up next to you is the second best thing after falling asleep next to you or well in you’ he says caressing your arm, as you chuckle
 ‘if you had told me you would have been saying this the first time you woke up next to me in pilot school I would have admitted my feelings much sooner’ you say smirking back he just rolls his eyes as he plays with your dogtags which have your wedding ring next to them matching his. He can’t still believe it that you are his wife, and that you had been for 3 months already.
He kisses your shoulder and then your lips as he hoovers over you adjusting your hair that has fallen on your forehead as he looks at you like you are his entire world
‘are you getting all mushy on me?’ you tease him
‘of course not’ he replies kissing you again, you deepen the kiss bringing him close but before things can escalate you tell him ‘Move, we have to be at mission control’  he just grunts as he moves out and both of you get dressed
As you leave the door he says ‘see you later mrs. seresin’ as he kisses you, as if you are not probably going to work together today, still you are not allowed PDA while at work so he takes any chance he gets to kiss you before going to work ‘I kept my surname d1ckhead!’ you reply laughing before kissing him again
One year after TGM
You woke up in the small house near the beach in san diego. A bit of light entered the curtains illuminating both you and jake’s strong arms and torso, he has no idea what a shirt is.
‘wake up sleepy head’ you whisper to him touching his cheek his only reply is Snuzzle his nose in your neck before kissing your shoulder than your arm and coming back for your cheek and then mouth, you just chuckle at all his little kisses on your skin.
‘I know how much you love giving me morning kisses’ you tell him holding his face with both of your hands as you kiss his mouth deeply ‘not as much as you like receiving them darling’ he replies adjusting your hair that had fallen on your eyes before kissing you again as he settles himself over you
‘shower?’ he asks smirking as you kiss him slowly ‘shower’ you reply giggling before slightly pushing him off and taking his hand leading him to your shared bathroom
After the shared shower you were both already in your uniforms. You went to the kitchen seating at the kitchen table while he was cooking a ‘kiss the cook’ apron covering his uniform, you gave his neck a kiss as you take your coffee cup from the counter and try to help him
‘ah ah’ he tells you as you sit at the table, in the end the kitchen is his reign ‘you know the rule baby seat and eat. the kitchen it’s my kingdom’ he says placing the food on your plate and bends down to kiss you, you thank him as he seats down too and you both start eating
‘Programs for today?’ he asks
‘ We finish at noon . then I’m catching lunch with phoenix, you have to go with coyote to fix his car. Then we have dinner at mav’s and penny’s with rooster, and you are bringing the Texan ribs.’
‘Got it’ he tells you
You both wash the plates, and exit the house, he kisses you as soon as you are out of the door ‘see you in a while sweetheart’ he says
‘we are going to the same place’ you reply rolling your eyes as he brings you closer kissing you again after giving his signature smile. Then you hop on your respective cars (as you are going in different places after work)
15 years after TGM
You turn in your bed, the feeling of some short hair brushing your neck, you look down to find the blond head with a few white hair strains matching the ones in your H/C hair sleeping on the crock of your neck, you smile at your husband, years and you will never not be amazed as his sleeping figure next to you. You pass your hand in them waking the pilot, he opens his eyes meeting yours as he smiles at you
‘how are you this beautiful when you wake up? More than 20 years and you still are beautiful as the first morning I woke up next to you ’ he asks you as you smile ‘you are not that bad either jake’ he chuckles as he starts kissing your neck his hands roaming your body sensually as his lips meet yours, you bath in his touch before logic takes over
‘we have no time for it Hang the kids are probably up already-‘ you say still kissing him back and bringing him close as a loud bang on the door signaling that you were right ‘dad! Tom stole my toy!’ a small girl voice shouts form the corridor
‘you can come in’ he shouts back rolling of you before the door is opened as your 5 years old daughter Michelle enters running, the three years old Tom behind her with as well your two golden retrievers all jumping on the bed crushing you both
‘good morning kids’ you tell them as tom hugs you and michelle hugs hangman.
‘tom stole my toy!’ michelle pouts, her father just laughs before looking at his son ‘tom please give her back her toy’ the child reluctantly does ‘michelle thank tom and remember that sharing is caring’ the girl thanks the boy before you and jake exchange a look and start peppering the kids with kisses and cuddles as they giggle
‘uncle roster is coming to pick you up to go to grandpa mav’s house, so hop hop go get ready’ you tell them as the kids go run to their rooms
‘I will bever get tired of morning like this’ jake replies kissing your forehead ‘me either’
You both get in your admiral unforms before jake prepares breakfast while you help the kids get dressed.
As jake is feeding tom, rooster’s jeep Clackson is heard, the two kids run out of the house being met by their honorary uncle
‘Where are my favorite nephew and niece?’ rooster asks bending down at their level and picking them both up and making them swing in his arms as they giggle. You and hangman finish putting the plates in the sink before going too outside
‘careful with my children chicken’ hangman tells him serious,  as hang places his arm around your waist and you place your head on his shoulder looking happily at the picture in front of you as rooster rolls his eyes ignoring him
‘who is ready to go to grandpa house?’ roosters ask the kids happily ‘we!’ the children cheer,
‘thank you for bringing them roo’ you tell him as rooster comes closer kissing you on the cheeck
‘no problem y/n. remember the barbecue with phoenix Friday, she is counting on it’
‘of course’ you reply smiling, hangman helps rooster put the kids in the car you go to them ‘bye mum, bye dad’ they cheer ‘behave with your grandparents and cousins’ you tell them kissing their heads before jake does too.
‘take care of them rooster’ jake tells Bradley as bradely replies ‘and you of her’, ‘always’ jake replies swearing as he kisses your head
They wave to you two as you wave back before you and jake hop in your 1980s car. Since your honorary uncle ice died you started using more the car he gifted you when you were young especially now with kids you could not all fit in the motorcycle maverick gifted you at your sixteenth birthday that you still used for yours and jake dates
‘i used to hate morning before meeting you, you know’ jake tells you getting in the passenger seat
You laugh ‘you hated many things before meeting me jake’ you reply ‘touchè’ he says as he kisses you again, you both put on your aviator glasses and start driving to top gun
Can I request a fic with Jake? I was thinking about something where he stands up for the reader when they come over to a family dinner or something like that and her relatives all just keep criticizing her and being mean and she is used to it but Jake won't stand for it and defends her?
Thank you so much either way, I love your fanfics!!!
hi nonnie!!! thank you so much for your sweet words - I hope you like it! and thank you so much to @natrace for beta reading this for me!!
Tumblr media
You smoothed your dress over for the dozenth time since parking the car as you waited for the exact right moment to enter the restaurant, swaying uncomfortably from side to side at the way the fabric clung to your calves. “If I smoke really quickly do you think they’ll smell it on me?” you asked Jake who was standing next to you and looking like you’d grown an extra head with how neurotic you’d been acting all day.
“You smoke?” he asked incredulously, and you smiled sheepishly.
“Sometimes, under duress,” you replied, fishing in your purse.
“You are not under duress, it’s just your family,” he said, grabbing your hands.
“Uranium mission was less stressful than this,” you muttered and he just laughed, tugging you along to walk inside. You were led back to a semi-private area where your mother and father sat who greeted the two of you with tight smiles and one-shouldered hugs.
“It’s nice to see you,” you said, smiling at Jake who pulled your seat out for you.
“Lieutenants,” your father said, taking a sip of his scotch. “Lucky we were able to catch you while we’re in town.”
“Yes sir, very lucky,” you agreed, reaching for the glass of water on the table.
“I hear you’ve been doing good out there at Top Gun,” he said to Jake, “how’s Maverick been treating you?”
“Maverick has been great, sir, it’s been an honor teaching alongside him.” he answered and you took a deep breath, dreading the moment he turned his attention to you.
“It’s nice you’re also back at Top Gun, I was surprised they’d recalled you for that mission at all,” he said and you bit your lip. “Do you feel like you’re learning anything new?”
“Well, there’s always something new to learn, dad, but I am an instructor as well,” you pointed out and he just nodded halfheartedly.
“That’s a lovely dress, dear,” your mom interjected, trying to grab your attention.
“Oh uh, thank you… I think you got it for me a few years ago, haven’t really had time to do any shopping recently,” you said and she nodded.
“I can pick up a few more things for you when we arrive home and ship them out if you’d like,” she offered and you smiled.
“That’s okay, mom, you don’t have to do that,” really you hoped she wouldn’t.
“It’s no trouble,” she said and you gave a bright smile to the waitress who came to take your drink orders and you watched as your mom was pleased with you not ordering a cocktail and instead ordering a sparkling water.
“I’ll be right back, need to powder my nose,” you said, not entirely sure what you even meant by that but you hurried down the hallway and flagged down your waitress. “Can I ask you to do me the biggest favor?” you asked and she smiled knowingly.
“Vodka or tequila?” she said and you flushed, “not the first tense family dinner I’ve served.”
“Tequila, you are an angel… thank you so much, you can just slip me a separate tab for the drinks,” you said before heading back to the table where your father was continuing to fawn over Jake. You didn’t mind, not at all… Jake was a great pilot and though his ego rarely ever fit through the door, he did deserve to be told how great he was but you did hope that every once in a while he would acknowledge you as well, but tonight did not seem to be that night.
“You should be spending more time in the air with Jake, you’re lucky to have him on your squad, there’s a lot he can teach you,” he said and you bit your lip as you looked at Jake.
“Well, sir, I actually feel like I learn more from her than she ever could from me,” he said and you smiled softly but you knew your dad wouldn’t accept it.
“She’s unfocused, you being here tonight proves just that… Top Gun isn’t a matchmaking academy but she turned it into one nonetheless.”
“Well, either way it’s lovely you two found each other,” your mother said, “honey, have you given any more thought to taking a more permanent teaching position?”
“I wasn’t aware that was something I was thinking about,” you replied.
“Oh, I just assumed with the two of you getting together you were finally starting to think about settling down and starting a family,” she shrugged, as if that was the most nonchalant thing ever and Jake reassuringly rubbed your knee under the table.
“That’s not really our priority right now,” you said.
“Maybe it should be,” your father said gruffly, “being a pilot doesn’t seem to be your strong suit.” Jake went to respond but you just knocked your knee against his and softly shook your head.
“Besides… I’m sure it’s crossed Jake’s mind once or twice, are you sure you’d be able to withstand the demands of being a wife and mother while being in the Navy?” your mom added and you choked on your drink.
“Excuse me?” you asked, looking at her wide eyed.
“Mind your manners,” she whispered, “I just mean that you’re not getting any younger, dear, and Jake is a good man with a very promising Navy career ahead of him… you’d be smart to start thinking about this now before you lose him,” she finished.
“I haven’t actually,” Jake interjected and you all turned to look at him, “thought about starting a family. We’re not quite there yet, but the two of us will talk about it when the time comes,” he said. “I’m not interested in making her a wife until she’s ready.”
“You should do it soon, promotions are going to start coming your way Lieutenant, wait too long and you won’t have the time.” your dad said and you suddenly felt like cattle being sold for auction. “And while she has the opportunity to leave the Navy gracefully.”
“I’d be willing to wager she gets promoted before I do, sir,” Jake said and your dad just shook his head.
“It’s a good thing you’re a better pilot than you are a betting man, son.”
“If you take a step back from active duty it will give you more time to plan the wedding too, dear… we could have it back home at the country club,” your mom said and you scoffed.
“Are you two even listening to us?”
“Watch your tone,” your father said and you shook your head in disbelief. “You’re lucky this is all this conversation is with how you’ve tarnished our family name.”
“Okay, that is enough,” Jake said suddenly, losing his grip on his patience. “You should know that your daughter is better than anyone in our squad and we all know it, we’re all competing for second best because none of us have a shot in hell at taking first with her around.”
“You might want to watch yourself, son,” your father warned.
“I’m not your son. And when your daughter feels ready for me to propose you can bet your ass I’ll do so at the first chance I get, but not a moment sooner because she is not just a potential wife or potential mother to my children for me… she is my partner and should we make any decisions about our future we will be sure to let you know… otherwise, sweetheart, I actually think we double booked ourselves.” he said, standing up and tugging you with him.
“Where do you think you’re going?” your mom asked, looking up at you in shock.
“Right now? Oh, right now I’m going to go get drunk with my friends, thank you for a lovely evening,” you said, tossing your napkin onto the table and walking out of the restaurant with Jake. “Hard Deck is only a five minute walk from here?” you suggested and he nodded, laughing as you took your heels off and let them dangle from your fingers. “Thank you for doing that, standing up to them was incredibly hot of you,” you said.
“Wasn’t going to let them talk about you like that, your dad is insane for not being proud of you… I know I am,” he said, looping his arm around your waist as you walked along the beach towards the bar.
“I love you, you know that?” you asked and he just nodded, leading you through the front door of the Hard Deck and flipping off your friends as they whistled at your appearances. “Hey Pen, I’m going to need a lot of tequila,” you said, graciously accepting the two shot glasses she set before you.
“To us and our country club wedding and lots and lots of babies,” he joked, clinking your glasses together as you laughed and downed the shot.
“Wait, what? What babies?” Rooster asked as he approached and you just shook your head as you ordered another round.
“Come on, I wanna kick your ass at pool,” you said, dragging Jake behind you and giggling as he spun you around and enveloped you in a kiss.
“I really am so proud of you, you know…” he said and you nodded, leaning up to kiss him again.
“I know, and I love you so much.”
“I love you too…”
Y/N didn’t know what she was doing.
She couldn’t remember the last time she went on date. Things had changed a lot since she was active in the dating pool. Dates were no longer big events where you shaved every crevice of your body, went out and bought a new dress, spent hours doing your hair and make-up, where picked up at your house and greeted with flowers and taken to some fancy restaurant across town. No, dating now was going to a local bar for a drink or two with some guy you had matched with on some dating app.
Y/N felt her hands shake as she looked over her shoulder as the bell above the door rang. She was extremely early to her drink date, a whole half hour early to be exact. But the nerves had gotten the better of her, and she didn’t want to show up late. Now she sat looking completely out of place in this swanky bar on the east side of San Diego. It was far enough away that she knew it would be safe from anyone she knew catching glimpse of her.
It wasn’t that she felt guilty about being on date. . . well, she felt a little bit guilty. Jake hadn’t signed the divorce papers yet, but they were making way with setting up visitation days. Y/N was currently living in the house while Jake was staying in an on-base house. Y/N hadn’t even thought of getting out into the dating field, wanting to wait until the divorce was completely over, but Val had set her up with one of her co-workers and Y/N didn’t have the heart to say no. Who knows, maybe she was going to meet her second husband.
A small huff left her lips at even the thought of marrying another man. Having another man raise her kids. Having another man in her bed. Jake had been the one for her, and he’d always be the one for her, even if he broke her heart. She could entertain the notion of getting drinks with someone, but it wasn’t going to go much farther than this.
“Y/N?” A masculine voice called out to her. She lifted her head, “I’m Miles, it’s nice to meet you.”
Y/N gave him a tight lipped smile, reaching her hand out to greet him, “Nice to meet you, Miles.”
He was clad in a black dress pants and baby blue button up. The top buttons were undone, showing the faintest gold chain around his thick neck. He sat down on the barstool next to you, his scent of oranges and hospital drifting to you, making your nose scrunch. You hated oranges and the thick smell of hospital disinfectant.
“Sorry I’m late, got held up at the hospital,” Miles said.
Y/N furrowed her eyebrows looking at her watch. It was 7:01 and they agreed to meet at the bar at 7:00, “A minute late is hardly late.”
“In my book. . . it is,” He smiled, flagging down the waiter to order himself a drink and some appitizers, “I don’t like showing up on time, it feels like I’m late.”
“I’m the same way. I like to be atleast 10 minutes early to everything,” Y/N sighed, “But having kids, I’m lucky if I’m even 5 minutes early.”
“Val told me about your children,” Miles said, taking a sip of the old fashioned he had ordered, “Three of them right?”
Y/N nodded her head, reaching for her phone. Her favorite thing about being a mom is getting to show off pictures of her kids. She showed Miles pictures of Alex when he first got his glasses, Ella winning her first soccer game, when Eli rolled over for the first time. Miles smiled along with her the whole time, asking questions about her kids; what they liked to do, what their favorite colors are, what their favorite bed time stories are.
“They look like they are some fun people,” Miles said, sipping his drink.
Y/N wasn’t sure what it was that snapped in her, but she suddenly felt embarrassed. Was she talking too muc about her kids? Did this guy even want kids? It wasn’t just her he would be getting if they ever decided to go past this one date, it was her and three kids. Three kids that had cried when their father moved his things out the door. Three kids that had been fighting and acting out more since the divorce process had started. Three kids that were waiting for her to come home.
“Hey?” Miles asked softly, putting his hand on her knee, “Did I lose ya?”
Y/N blinked a couple of times, plastering a fake smile on her face, “No,” She shook her head, “It’s just I-”
“Thinking about your kids?” Y/N nodded and Miles set his glass down on the bar, “Val told me this is your first time out since your divorce. . . It’s my first time out since my wife died and I. . .” Miles shook his head, “I can’t help but feel like I’m doing something wrong, meeting you here.”
Y/N’s heart broke a bit in her chest, seeing his sad brown eyes look at her. Val had mentioned that he was previously married, but she never disclosed the details on what happened. She shifted on her barstool, placing her hand on top of Miles’ giving it a squeeze.
“This doesn’t have to go very far tonight. . . If anything, I’m not ready to go very far tonight,” Y/N spoke honestly, “I’m still hurt and dealing with everything, but I could really use a friend?”
Miles nodded his head, turning his hand in Y/N’s so their fingers were intertwined, he squeezed her hand back, “I can use a friend too.”
The two of them stayed in the bar for only another hour, before going to find something to eat on the east side. Miles had picked out a local seafood place that he swore had the best fish tacos. The conversation flowed easily as they ate. They talked about everything under the sun; what he did for work at the hospital, Y/N’s plan to go back to work at the flower shop in a couple weeks, Miles’ most recent travel to Switzerland for a pediatric board conference, how Y/N finally got to visit the USS Midway museum. It truly did feel like Miles was the perfect friend for Y/N. He understood what it was like to lose someone you love, only difference was Jake wasn’t dead.
“I should really get back,” Y/N sighed as they walked down the sidewalk to where she parked her car, “I gotta trade off with the kids’ dad, he works early in the morning.”
“Don’t gotta explain anything to me,” Miles shrugged. He had been totally respectful when Y/N talked about everything with Jake. She didn’t go into full detail about it, mainly because the wounds were still so fresh. She still felt a pang in her heart when she walked through the front door and his boots weren’t there.
“I think we should do this again, I really enjoyed getting to be with another adult,” Y/N smiled and Miles returned it.
“I would love to,” Miles responded and opened Y/N’s car door, “Let me know when you get home, please.” Y/N nodded her head, “Good night, Y/N.”
“Goodnight, Miles,” She whispered as she shut the door.
The whole drive home it felt like Y/N was in a cloud. Her feelings were a bit conflicted on what she felt towards Miles. He was a good guy, with a nice smile. He had a sense of humor and had made her laugh several times throughout the night. Y/N could tell he had manners from the times he pulled out her chair and switched sides on the sidewalk so he was near the street. But all those little things were also things that Jake had done. Jake always sat so he was facing the door, or in the isle. Jake always opened the door and walked next to the street. Jake always knew how to make Y/N laugh.
Y/N had just pulled into her driveway, Jake’s black truck parked in it’s normal spot when her phone dinged.
‘Valeria Bates: how was it!? Did you kiss!? Did you do more than kiss!?’
Y/N’s face paled. Was she supposed to kiss him? They had agreed to just be friends, for now, but what was supposed to happen on the next date? Y/N hadn’t ever kissed another man besides Jake. And she sure as hell hadn’t slept with another man. Even though Miles was attractive, the thought of him touching her the way Jake had made her feel queasy. She didn’t respond to Val, tucking her phone in her purse and heading towards the front door.
Quietly, she pushed the door open, coming face to face with Jake sitting alone on the couch, only the light of the television illuminating his face. When Y/N first asked Jake if he could watch the kids tonight, she hadn’t felt bad about it, but now, seeing him sitting there alone, she felt nothing but guilt.
“How was it?” Jake asked.
Y/N sighed as she took off her coat and hung it up, “It was good.”
Jake nodded his head and stood up from the couch, “Will there be another one?”
“Too soon to say,” Y/N mumbled and turned to face Jake, “How were the kids?”
“They were fine. Eli was a bit fussy but he’s got some teeth coming in,” Jake stuffed his hands in his pockets and Y/N nodded.
“Well, You should probably get-”
“Don’t go on another date,” Jake said, cutting Y/N off, “Look, I know I fucked up. I know what I did is something that is unforgivable, and I beat myself up for it every day, but please. . . Please. . .” He walked towards her, and grabbed her hand in his, “Please.”
Y/N wasn’t sure what to do, as he stood before her, his green eyes with a tint of red to them.
“Goodnight, Jake,” Y/N muttered, squeezing his hand before moving towards the stairs to go check on the kids.
“I love you,” Jake whispered as Y/N’s frame disappeared down the hallway.
Crashing In- Chapter 5
Tumblr media
Synopsis: After living with Jake for a few weeks you're starting to get you footing; a new job, good friends, and of course Jakes birthday celebration at a country bar. Pairing: Jake Seresin x reader (Bob’s sister) c/w: Fluff, maybe a tiny bit of angst w/c: 4.1k a/n: Finally updating this story lol, at least the chapters/my writing is getting longer, anyway enjoy the newest chapter of Crashing In!
Chapter 4: A Cowboy Birthday
Its been a few weeks since you met the rest of the squad at the Hard Deck, meaning it had been a few more weeks living with Jake. You two got into a routine, from grocery shopping and other chores to hanging out more both with and without the squad, Jake really enjoyed your company and you thought that you two were becoming good friends. While you still had a crush on Jake, you tried to not let it affect your friendship with him, some days proving easier than others.
For example there had been a few times where you caught him coming back from a run, his workout shirt long discarded and tucked into his shorts, his sweaty and toned torso on full display as he passed you making breakfast in the kitchen. Those were the difficult days.
Over the course of the past few weeks you kept looking for a new job, having a handful of interviews but never working out. You were exhausted, even just applying to these jobs.
With more time on your hands, you fell back into reading, constantly getting new books to fill your time. The book store was a place you could escape and just enjoy some great stories. As you stopped on you way home to pick up another book, and tell Ruth how much you enjoyed the book she recommended, you make your way to the front you hear Ruth on the phone.
Her brows furrowed as she signs and crosses something out in the binder behind the counter. Once she hangs up you make your way to the cash.
“Hey, you okay?” you ask.
“Oh what that, that was nothing,” she waves off “just one of the girls who works…” Ruth pauses and then corrects herself, “sorry worked here, she’s going back to school and won’t be able to work here anymore.”
“Oh, I’m sorry to hear that” you reply.
“don’t worry about it dear, I’m sure I’ll be able to find someone else soon.” Ruth stated before ringing up your order.
“Oh and thank you so much for that book from last week, I’m almost finished it, I love how the author writes from the different perspectives, intertwining all of their storyline, Its great!” You gush.
She smile back, “Well I’m really glad you like it."
After pay and say your goodbyes you head back out to your car. You’re just about to leave when it hits you. Scrambling out of your car and running back towards the book store. Forcefully stumbling into the shop and up to the counter Ruth looks at you, concern etched onto her face.
“Are you okay? Did you forget something?” She asks.
Finally catching your breath you respond, “I want the job” you say. “I want to work here.”
“Oh my goodness, honey you didn’t have to run back here.” Ruth replies while smiling and shaking her head at your antics.
“Sorry, I just…I just really need a job and I realized once I got back to my car… and I..”
“Oh hush, sweetheart, of course I’ll give you the job” Ruth answers.
Breathing a sigh of relief, a smile breaks out on your face as you look back at Ruth. “Thank you, Thank you so much.”
“How about you come by on Monday with your informations and I’ll show you what to do.”
“Perfect, thank you again” you say as you head back out to your car. After a quick drive back home you were so excited you had to tell someone, evidently picking up your phone and calling Bob.
“Hey” Bob answers.
“Are you busy, I can call back” you reply.
“No, I’m all good, we actually just finished, I’m heading out to my car now, what’s up?”
“I got a job!” You say excitedly
“Really?! That’s great to hear, what is it?” He asks
There is a brief moment of silence before you speak. “Umm…It’s at the book shop I always tell you about.” No response. “I know its not what I was originally looking for, but at least its something” you suffice.
“Okay, well if you’re happy then I’m happy for you, I just thought you would do something related to you old job?” He explains.
“To be quite honest with you, all of those jobs are the same and I knew I wasn’t gonna be happy. I think I’ve outgrown that job and want a completely different experience, and yeah I know its not gonna be great money, but at least I’ll be happy, and not wanting to quit all the time like before. I’m serious when I say that my old job took years off my life, like I was constantly stressed and this job is more manageable” You state.
“Yeah you make a good point, I’m sure you’ll do great Y/NN.” Bob says.
“Thanks”
“Is there anything else you wanted to talk about?” He asked.
“Nope I don't think so, I just wanted to tell you the good news”
 “Alright, I guess I’ll see you Friday then?” Bob says.
“Friday, why Friday?” You ask confused.
“Ya’ know for Hangman’s birthday. Its on Friday and we’re all going out to some country bar I think..” He explains.
Your eyes go wide, you had no idea that Jake’s birthday was on Friday, let alone that they had plans. You recovered quickly not wanting your embarrassment to come through on the phone.
“Oh yeah, right, can’t believe I almost forgot, see ya Friday!” You say before hanging up the phone and setting it down. Looking down at the counter, brows furrowed, you can’t help that your mind races with reason’s why Jake never told you any of this.
Speak of the devil, you hear his truck pull into the drive way. You tried to act natural as he entered the house, looking in the fridge for something to eat. Soon enough he comes strolling into the kitchen.
“Hey, how was your day?” He asks while leaning the island.
Shutting the fridge door, you face him, “oh it was good, I umm… I got a job” you say while avoiding eye contact.
“Really!? Thats great! Was it at the place you interviewed for today?” He asks excitedly.
You scoff “oh that, no, it was um…actually at the book store I always go to…” you trail off.
“Oh.”
“Yeah, I’m starting on Monday, one of the other girls quit cause she’s going back to school” you explain.
“I see” Jake says nodding, “Well I sure you’ll do great.”
“Thanks” you say, again avoiding eye contact and fidgeting a bit. Jakes brows furrow slightly, he’s studying you, he can tell your not telling him something.
“Are you okay?”
“I’m fine” you say finally looking at him, a slight grimace on your face
“Are you sure?”
Welp here it goes. You take a death breathe before replying, “How come you never mentioned your birthday is this Friday?”
Jakes eyebrows shoot up, shit. Now its his turn to avoid eye contact, staring down at his feet for a moment.
“I guess I forgot.” He says sheepishly, “I just assumed that everyone knew.”
“Yeah well you never told me, nobody even told me until today” you say sarcastically.
Taking a few steps closer to you, he apologies, “I’m sorry, I should have said something, I just thought that you were apart of the planning.”
“Well I wasn’t, but its okay. Bob mentioned something about going out on Friday, a country bar or something…” you trail off.
“Yeah, ya know to remind me of home I guess, I don’t know” he explains with a soft smile on his face. “And I would really want you to come, it’ll be fun.”
You bite your cheek to stop yourself from smiling, but its doesn’t work very well at containing your excitement. “Okay, I’ll come, I’ll make sure you have the best Cowboy birthday the state of California has ever seen.”
He chuckles at your response, “thanks, I’m sure you will.” Theres a brief moment of silence between you two, Jake moves a little bit almost as if he was going to hug you, but it never comes and instead he just awkwardly shifts on his feet, eventually excusing himself to go change out of his uniform.
Tumblr media
The night before Hangman’s birthday, it was a typical night, however instead of hanging out in the living room reading or watching tv alongside Jake, you were tucked away in your room, leaving Jake alone.
Channel surfing, Jake had no idea what to watch, typically always letting you pick. As he flicked through the channels eventually landing on a Thursday night football game, he mindlessly watched. Eventually it was halftime and Jake was beyond bored, ultimately deciding to just put on a movie. Getting up from the couch, and grabbing some popcorn, he though he should ask if you wanted to join.
Making his way towards your room he knocked lightly, however he could tell that something was playing. He slowly opened the door, however quickly stopping once he saw you.
Your laptop was open on your bed playing some country music, you followed along to a dance tutorial, line dancing by the looks of it. A smile broke out on his face, watching you learn the dance, and you were pretty good. Shaking his head, he was careful not to make any noise as he slowly shut the door before you saw him.
Sitting back down on the couch, Jake threw on some movie he’d seen many times, however he didn’t really spend much time watching, rather thinking about how you were learning how to line dance, he assumes in preparation for his birthday outing tomorrow night with the squad.
A while later you come out of your room, and grab some water from the kitchen, making your way to the living room to see what Jake’s doing.
“Hey whatcha doin?”you ask.
“Oh nothin’ just watching a movie, since there wasn’t anything good on tv.” He replies casually turning his attention toward you, “what about you?” He asks.
Panicking you come up with some excuse for your sweaty nature, “Oh I was doing some abs workouts, and a little bit of yoga,” you say trying to make it sound believable, desperately hoping he buys it.
Nodding his head in return, he glances back toward the tv where the movie is almost finished.
“Anyway, I’m umm gonna go take a shower” you state.
“Okay, I’m probably gonna head to bed soon since this is almost over” he replies.
“Okay well goodnight then” you say before heading to your bathroom.
“Goodnight” Jake replies.
But little did he know your night was not over yet, you had hatched a little surprise for the birthday boy, that hopefully he would appreciate.
Tumblr media
Waking up, Jake went about his normal morning routine, that is until he stepped into the kitchen and saw something on the island. Upon further inspection and the note beside the try that say Happy Birthday, in front of him was a tray of cupcakes, apple pie cupcakes to be exact.
He couldn’t help the smile that broke out on his face, shaking his head and taking a look towards your room knowing you were responsible. Thinking back to a few weeks before at the Hard Deck when the squad got into a very heated debate about what was the best pie. He didn’t even think you were listening but being ever the Floyd, you were very observant like your brother.
He picked one up and took a bite, a groan falling from his lips at how good it tasted. God, he really didn’t wanna share these, but he knew that he probably should cause knowing him that tray would be gone by tomorrow. After finishing up his cupcake and making his coffee, he packed up just enough for the squad, leaving two cupcakes behind for later.
He left a note on the counter saying thank you, and most importantly to not eat the cupcakes he saved.
Tumblr media
You were curled up in one of the chairs by the front window when Jake got home. Once he entered the house you got up from your spot and headed to greet him, “Happy Birthday!” You shouted as you hugged him. He was caught off guard, but he returned the hug quickly as he said “thank you.”
You pulled back to soon for his liking and smiled up at him, “how was your day?”
“It was good, but those cupcakes made it even better” he answers.
“Oh, thanks.” You said while blushing.
“They were delicious and everyone loved them, thank you, you didn’t have to do that.”
Well your welcome, I remembered you saying how much you like apple pie and how you miss your moms baking, so I tried my best” you reply bashfully looking down at your feet.
“Well they were great, I’m glad I saved some her for later” he said as he looked at you expectedly with his eye brows raised.
“Oh don’t worry I didn’t eat them” you joked causing him to laugh.
Awhile after dinner you two are getting ready to go out. You both decided to Uber to the bar so that way neither of you would have to worry about driving later.
“Is this okay?” you ask Jake as you head towards the front door. You weren’t sure what to wear so you decided on a simple brown dress, cropped black jean jacket, and…
“Nice boots” Jake says as his eyes ranked down your form and landed on your feet.
Watching him take you in, you blush slightly at his compliment “Thanks, I haven’t worn them in a long time but I figured I should for the occasion” you joke, “But I look okay?” You ask again.
“You look great” he says as he meets your eyes. Once again you can’t help the smile that breaks out on your face. “Thanks, you ready to go?”
“Yep just gotta grab one thing” Jake answers, as he goes to grab something out of the closet. Returning to you as he places his Stetson cowboy atop his head, smug smile on his lips.
“Oh my god” you say while laughing at him.
“What darlin’ we’re goin’ to a country bar and I’m a real life Texas cowboy” he drawls, making his accent thicker, as he gazes down at you.
“Okay whatever” you reply while shaking your head and ordering the Uber. In reality you were desperately trying to calm your racing heartbeat.
Tumblr media
Once you and Jake arrived at the country bar you made your way inside, it was really crowded and so Jake placed his hand on the small of your back usher you further inside to find the rest of the squad. But to be quite honest you were having a hard time finding them while Jakes hand stayed on your back. Eventually he spotted some of them in a booth.
“Hey guys you made it!” Bob says while giving you a hug.
“Yeah we were worried you wouldn’t be able to find us, its really packed in here tonight” supplied Phoenix.
You slid into the booth next to Phoenix, and began talking to her and Bob about their day. Coyote and Rooster returned from the bar with drinks for everyone, the former clapping his hands on Jakes shoulders “the birthday boy’s here!” He yelled out, while shaking Jake slightly.
The fun quickly begins as people talk, and dance, occasionally heading to the bar for more drinks. However it isn’t until the DJ announces the next song, and for any line dancers to head to the dance floor. Phoenix drags you out there, and she begins dancing, following the people around her. You’re feeling good, as you start to get into the grove of the song, nailing the steps and putting some of your own personality into some of the moves.
You honestly don’t remember the last time you had this much fun, and its evident on your face as you continue dancing.
Jakes eyes trace up and down your body, landing on your face, he’s watching you, along with the rest of the boys stationed at your groups booth, laughing at you and Phoenix dancing, the later pulling Rooster and Bob out to join the two of you on the dance floor.
You’re laughing as you watch your brother try and learn the dance moves you effortlessly pull off. Jake can’t help the smile the appears on his face, seeing you get out of your comfort zone and having fun. Once the song ends you and Phoenix head off to the bar, to take a quick break from all the dancing.
Tumblr media
A little while later you’re dancing with Bob and Phoenix, having a great time, however once the song ends the DJ announces he’s gonna slow things down a bit with Ray LaMontagne’s “I Was Born To Love You.” You see Phoenix begin to dance with Bob, her not want to leave the dance floor, meanwhile you are about to head back to the booth when you notice someone in the corner of your eye. Turning your head towards them, you realizes it’s Jake, and he comes and stops in front of you.
“Come on darlin, lets dance” he says while extending his hand out.
You chuckle lightly, and ultimately accept his invitation, “Well I can’t say no to the birthday boy can I” you reply.
The two of you begin swaying gently, your hand on Jake’s shoulder and the other clasped in his, and his other hand resting respectfully on your waist, almost as if he’s afraid to put all of its weight on you. The close proximity affects you, the smell of his cologne floods your nostrils, your eyes fixed on his chest and neck, too scarred to look him in the eyes. Cause that would feel too intimate, so you slowly let your eyes close, feeling the flow of the music.
Jakes attention is focused solely on you, though he’s slightly upset you won’t actually look at him, he shakes his head slightly trying to get those thought out of his head. He feels you relax more as you two dance, so much so that you rest your head on his chest as the song continues.
He can smell your shampoo, and a little bit of your vanilla perfume you never leave the house without. He eventually leans his head down and begins talking to you in a hushed whisper.
“You were really good at line dancing, looks like all that practice payed off”
Now your looking at him, his face much closer than it was when the two of you started dancing. “What do you mean?”
“Last night, I was gonna invite you to watch a movie, but when I got to your room I saw you practicing” he explains.
Horrified is the only thing you can think of right now. You drop your head to his shoulder in embarrassment letting out a groan.
“I can’t believe you saw me doing that” you say.
“its okay” Jake says, as he gives a slight squeeze to your waist. You nearly pass away right there on the dance floor.
“I just didn’t want to embarrass myself, but it looks likes I’ve still managed to do that so..” You reply bashfully.
“Don’t be embarrassed, you’re a good dancer.” Your heart warms at the compliment. All too soon the song ends and another lively hit blast through the speakers. Jake joins you and the rest of the squad as you all resume dancing.
Tumblr media
You’re chilling with some of the squad sat at the booth, when you happen to notice Jake at the bar, some girl beside him, laughing at something he said, and placing her hand on his forearm. She’s heavily flirting with him and by the looks of it, he’s flirting back.
You force yourself to look away, rejoining the conversations going on amongst the rest of the group. A few minutes later you excuse yourself to the restroom, on your way there you realize how much your feet hurt. Having not wore these boots in a couple of years you wince slightly as you walk.
Coming out of the restroom, and back over to the table you begin saying your goodbyes, its getting late and with your feet in pain you decide to call it a night. As you’re headed towards the exit, you see Jake in the crowd. Tugging on his arm, he turns his head and sees you.
“I'm headed home, I’ll see ya later” you state.
“Oh okay, let me say bye to the squad” he says.
“No it’s okay, you can stay, keep enjoying your birthday, my feet are just killing me” you reply, patting his arm gently and walking away. You exit the bar and move away from the entrance a bit, the country music now muffled, and giving your ears a break, as you order your Uber.
Jake comes out of the bar, looking around for you, hoping he hasn’t missed you yet. He spots you a little further down and begins walking. You’re looking at your phone when you see someone in you peripheral coming your way.
“There you are” he states, “thought I missed ya.”
“Jake, you don’t have to come back with me, its okay” you say.
“Too late, I’m already here, and plus I kinda wanted to leave anyway” he explains. Your Uber pulls up and the two of you get in. The drive back home is quiet, at one point Jake turns to say something however when he see’s your head leaning back and your eyes closed, he decides not to interrupt your peace.
When you get home, your feet are on fire, as you stagger a few paces behind Jake toward the front door. Stumbling inside you sit down on the bench in the entry, letting out a sigh.
You shift going to take your boots off when Jake cuts in, Kneeling down in front of you.
“Thanks” you say quietly. Jake tugs each boot off as you only wince slightly at your aching feet.
“Sorry” he says looking back up at you.
“Its okay” you reply with a soft smile. Your eyes shift towards his hat which he still hasn’t taken off. You reach out and pluck it off his head, his hair still somehow perfectly styled underneath it. You put his hat down beside you on the bench, careful to not flatten the brim.
Trying to get up you suck in a deep breathe, your feet in so much pain, then Jake speaks up, “Here let me help you,” as he puts his hand around your waist, and your arm over his shoulders. He leads you towards your bathroom and helps you sit on the edge of the tub.
“Why did you bring me in here?” You ask confused.
“So you can soak your feet, help alleviate some of that pain” he explains as he goes to turn the water on to fill it up partially. As it fills he leaves to grab something, “wait here” he says, “where else am I gonna go” you reply sarcastically.
Soon enough he return with a package, opens it and pours some of the contents into the tub. “Its epsom salts, it’ll help soothe your feet.”
Finally dipping your feet into the warm water, you let out a sigh of relief. “Thank you.”
“No worries” Jake replies.
“You know you didn’t have to come back with me, you could have stayed and enjoyed more of your birthday” you state.
“Oh yeah, how?” Jake asks.
“I though I saw you flirting with some girl back at the bar” you say staring at your feet in the tub.
“No” Jake says, shaking his head, “she was definitely flirting with me though, but I wasn’t interested” he explains.
“Hmh” you say nodding your head.
“Plus I had to make sure you didn’t eat the rest of those cupcakes” Jake jokes.
“Ugh that sounds so good right now” you groan.
“Well, then I’ll go grab them.” Jake leaves momentarily, and returns with the last two apple pie cupcakes.
Handing you yours, you two do a little cheers with the cupcakes, before diving in.
Taking a biting, a moan escaping your lips, you’re too caught up in the dessert to notice, but Jake does. It takes everything in him not to react. He takes a deep breath before he begins eating his cupcake.
“I seriously outdid myself with these” you say while continuing to eat.
“Yeah you did” Jake agrees as the two of you sit there in a comfortable silence, completely content with how his night turned out.
Stolen Dance Sneak Peak
A/N: Unfortunately this is not the update for Freaking Out but that one is in the works i swear! i just for some reason couldn’t make any progress on that one without following this brain worm first. i formulated a tag list based on the engagement i got from Freaking Out - if you’d like to be added or removed from that list (or just want to be tagged in the Freaking Out follow up and nothing else) let me know.
without further ado - here is a snippet from Stolen Dance, a Hangman one shot i’ll be posting hopefully tomorrow night:) based on the song above.
In another life, he had the pleasure of being your dance partner - the two of you were a sight to behold. You wasted away many nights going to bars, clubs, galas, and everything in between. Your energy was vibrant when the beat captured your soul, and it was contagious to anyone lucky enough to be in your proximity. Dancing was when you let go and allowed yourself to be carefree and wild. You were never afraid to be you, but it was in these moments you were truly the happiest. He knew he was the lucky one to get share in those moments with you, the moments when the beads of sweat started to gather on your brow and your face flushed from exhaustion. That was when you were the most beautiful, because you were the most authentically you.
Even though the lights were dim and he was a fair distance away he could see - he could feel - how unhappy you were with the man in front of you. Your shoulders were tense, you kept looking around, your movements were all robotic and forced, not even a single bead of sweat on your forehead. But the thing that really gave you away? The smile you wore didn’t quite reach your eyes. He had never seen you dance this way before - it was all wrong.
His feet were carrying him towards you in long strides before he had time to second guess his actions - the whiskey sour once again forgotten at the table in the corner.
The only one for me [J.S]
Tumblr media
Navigation
Pairings: Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin x fem!reader
Words: 2k
Summary: Other women just don’t seem to care that you’re Jake’s wife or the fact that you’re sitting right next to him whilst they flirt with him
Warnings: Fluff, some angst, slight insecure reader, Jake’s a whole softie, making out, some sexual implications but not really.
Tumblr media
It’s not his fault and you know it. It’s not as if he’s purposely picking out other women and flirting with them in front of you; it’s just his personality and the way he is - too friendly for his own good and too good-looking for his own good - so every interaction just happens to be mistaken for flirting. It’s also obvious that he’s with someone, he has you pressed up against him in the booth, his arm thrown protectively behind your back to squeeze you and to show every man in the Hard Deck that you’re his.
You only wish the women had half the decency that the men had not to flirt with your husband right in front of you.
It would be impossible for any man to try and flirt with you in front of Jake, a hard stare and maybe even a ‘back off, man’ would be all they would get. You, on the other hand, do not possess the skill of a hard glare or even to interrupt whatever lady that sat down right beside Jake, twirling their hair and batting their lashes as if you weren’t sitting right there under Jake’s arm.
It’s not as if he indulges in the flirting, he’s just friendly - much to your dismay.
You try not to let it bother you - you really do - but it still does. The stupid pit of jealousy sits in your stomach and gnaws at it until you feel sick; you feel sick of watching these women ignore you and talk to Jake like he’s up for grabs.
Maybe that’s another thing, they do it because they don’t see you as a competition. They’re all beautiful and confident, batting their lovely eyes at Jake because he’s gorgeous and you’re just so painfully you.
You nurse the drink in your hand with a pitiful look on your face, leaning into Jake’s side as he talks idly with the woman sitting so close to him he can’t move anywhere.
It feels horrid to feel so icky because Jake’s not the one doing anything wrong and it’s not as if you could ban him from speaking to another woman again, but god, you want to just tell her to fuck off - but you never would.
The woman laughs loudly at something he said, hitting his arm, “you’re hilarious! I love a man with humour,” she says, winking at her last statement.
She could’ve just come and hit you in the stomach and poured your drink over you because her words had the exact same effect. You rolled your eyes involuntarily, not even the tiniest bit nervous about her seeing it, her eyes were glued to Jake.
“Gotta keep the missus happy somehow,” he smiles politely, squeezing you against him, “ain’t that right, baby?”
He laughs a little at his own words as he looks toward you, only for his smile to be wiped off his face as he takes in the solemn look on your face; the way you stare at the empty glass in your hands, obviously not paying attention to his conversation or words.
The woman laughs awkwardly, giving you a dirty look that you didn’t see, “I didn’t realize you were married.”
Jake doesn’t answer her, instead, he lowers his head to nudge your temple with his lips and whispers in your ear, “baby?”
The affection pulls you from your trance and you hum, looking from your glass to his face, a concerned frown pulls at his lips and brow - you reach up to smooth over the crease that has settled and his eyes soften.
“You okay? You wanna go home? Too loud?” He asks and if you could melt into a puddle you would at the genuine concern etched in his words and how he would drop everything just to make sure you’re as comfortable as possible and having fun.
“Only if you want to, I don’t mind waiting till you’re done,” you whisper back, leaning into his body and his soft touches.
He smiles and shakes his head, leaving a kiss against your hair, “I’m done now then.”
Before you had the chance to say anything more he’s already politely asking the stunned woman to move, sliding out of the booth with your purse and jacket on one arm and the other reached out for you to take.
It takes you a moment before you’re grabbing ahold of his arm, purposely ignoring the dirty look the woman gives you before she’s huffing and storming in the opposite direction. You sigh in relief, gripping Jake’s arm tight as he leads you by his fellow pilots to wave goodbye and then out the front door of the Hard Deck.
Jake keeps an eye on your face, smiling at the way you cling to his arm, “you’re sure you’re okay, sweetheart?” he asks when you reach his truck.
Before you have a chance to open the passenger door, he had you caged against the vehicle, arms on both sides of your body as he looks down at you with a certain look, waiting for you to answer him.
You let out a sigh, placing both hands on his biceps, “I just wish they would see me as a threat.”
“Who?” His eyebrow is raised and if he wasn’t so confused you’re sure he would’ve laughed because of all the things you were, threatening was probably one of the last things on that list - probably not on the list at all.
“The women… all of them that come and talk to you… none of them takes me seriously when I’m sat next to you and that’s why they flirt with you right in front of me,” you sighed with a squeeze of his biceps, avoiding his eyes and missing the way they soften.
You don’t have time to react before you were smushed against his hard chest, his arms around you in a tight embrace. You inhale the musky scent of his cologne, the scent calming you instantly.
“You should’ve told me it bothered you, honey. I never would’ve talked to them if I knew you felt like that,” he said with a sweet smile that you couldn’t see, you could only feel his lips against your forehead as he spoke.
“It’s not what you do that bothers me, you’re just being nice… it’s them. They’re so persistent just because they’re prettier than me -“
“Hey! Don’t say that,” Jake pulls your face from his chest, his eyebrows scrunched together again with a frown, “they’re not. You know you’re the prettiest girl in the world to me.”
You sigh, smoothing out the crease again out of instinct, “I know, but they don’t think that.”
“Honey, I don’t care what they think, it’s what I think that matters and I happen to think you’re the most exquisite creature I’ve ever seen,” he spoke matter-of-factly, brushing your cheek with his thumb.
You chuckled lightly, trying but failing to hide the heat that crept up your neck.
“If I didn’t know better, I would say you have a crush on me, lieutenant Seresin,” you grinned, eyes crinkling with the pinch he left on your cheek.
Jake smirked, leaning down to brush his lips against yours in typical teasing Seresin manner, his breath fanned across your lips as he spoke, “oh I have much more than just a crush on you, baby.”
His muscles flexed underneath your hands as they glided up to hold him around his neck. He was bent down to be right in your face and you knew that if he were to straighten up you would be dangling from him; if he was uncomfortable in the way he was bent he didn’t let it on, instead he brushed your lips with his so achingly slow you couldn’t help the needy whine of his name that slipped from your pouting lips.
“Just kiss me already, Jake,” you whined like an impatient child, almost stomping your foot on the ground for added effect, but decided against it.
Jake only smirked, moving his hand up to grip the back of your neck, holding you in place for him, “you wanna say that again, you little brat?”
You swallowed the stone-sized lump in your throat, trying to close the minimal gap between your lips, but Jake kept you in place with his strong hand.
“Please, kiss me… I love you,” you whispered, adding the last part to seal the deal because you knew Jake could never resist you when you played your sweet loving wife card.
Which is why you didn’t have time to even take a breath before Jake’s lips were on yours, trapping you firmly against his truck with his firm body. He moved skillfully against you, sliding his tongue along your bottom lip, silently asking for permission; your lips parted instantly, allowing him entrance to slip his tongue in and tangle with yours. Your breaths mingled and your noses bumped one another. The kiss was bruising, to say the least, and his grip on you even more. His muscles moved under your touch, your hands sliding from his biceps to glide up his chest, finding their final destination tangled in his soft blond hair; your fingers scratched at his scalp and tugged on his locks electing soft grunts of satisfaction to fall from his parted lips.
One of Jake’s many talents was definitely kissing because somehow, no matter how many times you two made out, it always made tingles and goosebumps rise along your entire body. It was like being bathed in warm honey, his kisses sweet and always desperate for you. His hands explored you entirely like if he wasn’t holding you as close as possible you would vanish from him.
“You two haven’t left yet?”
Your kiss broke with a startled gasp as you peered over Jake’s shoulder to see a very amused Rooster and Phoenix, both with raised brows and sly grins. Your face felt like it was on fire especially with Jake’s hand cupping your face, thumb rubbing the soft skin slowly.
He didn’t turn fully, only looking over his shoulder to answer, “we were just about to.”
Phoenix hummed, “sure.”
“I was just helping my girl into her seat,” Jake smiled, sending you a quick wink.
Rooster barked out a laugh, “were you gonna stuff her through the door?”
Jake huffed, “I was just trying to be a gentleman… kissing my lady before helping her… not something you’re familiar with, huh, Bradshaw?”
“Dude, it looked like you were inhaling her… or crushing her,” Phoenix scoffed with a chuckle.
“Okay, not that I’m not enjoying this conversation because I really am… we really should leave now,” you spoke, burying your face in Jake’s shoulder.
“Alright, we’ll leave you to it… later lover birds,” Rooster saluted, turning with Phoenix back towards the bar.
You let out a laugh feeling Jake huff against the top of your head, “that guy.”
“Alright, lover boy, let’s go home.”
Jake looked down at you with a sheepish smile, “just a moment, sweetheart and then I’m good to go.”
“What’s wrong, are you okay?” you reached up cupping his cheeks, looking him over with wide eyes.
Jake let out a small chuckle, “I’m fine, honey… it’s just difficult driving when my pants feel a little tight.”
Your eyes widened as you looked down, and sure enough, his pants did look a little tighter, “oh… I thought your phone was poking me.”
Jake laughed loudly hugging you tightly, “my sweet girl.”
“What?? That was a completely valid thing to think,” you argued, wiggling in Jake’s grasp, but to no avail.
He hummed, “I love you.”
“I love you too.”
“You’re the only one for me, ever. You know that right?” he spoke against the top of your head.
“I know,” you smiled against his chest, burying yourself further against him, “and you’re the only one for me.”
“Damn right I am,” he exclaimed, making you laugh.
