Tornado Taylor 🌪
Tumblr media
I am participating in @choicesflashfics  prompt  # 22  “I am at my wits end with you.”  which will be in bold
I am also participating in @choicesmonthlychallenge prompt:  Can I at least tell my side of the story, which will also be in bold.
The Book:  TRR (no royals)  Series: Chapter 6:  School Dayz  (link posted if you need to catchup)  Pairings:  Liam x Riley Word Count: 1575 Warning and Ratings:  NONE!   Mood Music Monday Song Imspiration: The Call: Regina Spektor Summary:  Riley gets roped into shenanigans with her sister.
Original Post: 03/04/23 at 9:15PM  EST.
“TELL ME THE TRUTH RIGHT NOW RILEY ANTONIA BROOKS!!! RIGHT NOW!!!!!!”  My father’s voice boomed in anger.
Tumblr media
This was probably the most angry I had seen him in a long time.
‘I didn’t do it! I promise!”
“I am at my wits’ end with you!”
Taylor remained silent.
“Taylor!!!!”  I screamed at her. My sister had her look.  Her ‘She’s pleading the 5th look  where she stops answering questions.’  She wouldn’t leave me to hang out to dry like this in something I had no part of…. Would she? Her own sister  - - her identical twin at that.
Tumblr media
“Taylor please….”
“Dad, she said no. She didn't do anything wrong.”
“I don’t believe either of you right now.  We’re leaving.”
“Dad, no, I already took the written test. I took it!”  Taylor insisted.
Dad grabbed me by one arm and then Taylor by the other taking us up to the examiner.
“Are you able to verify which one of these girls  took the written driver’s test?”
Tumblr media
The examiner looked from Taylor to myself, and back again,  The both of us were dressed identically, We looked the exact same down to my sneakers.
“No…I can't tell the difference between the two of them.”
“Didn’t think so, so we won’t be completing this driving test today.”
You may be asking yourself how I got myself into this predicament.  I have two words for you.  Tornado Taylor.
Tumblr media
I love my sister, I really truly do.  She’s smart and not just another ditsy popular girl.
Tumblr media
If she put as much focus into hair-brained schemes as she put into school, she’d be on the dean’s list right now, like I am, instead of barely on  A / B honor Roll. School came pretty easy to Taylor and if she actually studied…. Like I have to study, she could be running circles around me.
But I’m getting sidetracked. Here’s how Tornado Taylor sucked me up into her vortex.
Tumblr media
Three Hours Ago:
I woke up that morning without incident.  Since it was a teacher’s work day and we didn’t have school, my body is used to its routine of  getting up early. I decided to make myself a bowl of cereal  while the house was still quiet.  Afterwards I showered and dressed in a t-shirt and a pair of jeans.
She peeked her head into my room.
Tumblr media
I lounged on my bed streaming the new series that had just debuted on the APP called The Vampires Live On.  I had to share my login with Taylor but at least we watched different things.  It was very rare that the two of us watched the same shows or had to restart a series.
“Ri, Breakfast.”
“I already ate.”
“Oh. You’re already up and dressed?”   Taylor was still in pajamas.
“Yeah, I’m laying low today.”
“After breakfast Dad’s taking me to the DMV to get my license.”
“Good Luck!”
“I don’t need luck, I have a plan.”
Tumblr media
I should have taken it as a warning... but I didn’t.
Two Hours Ago
Hungry from my binge watching I came into the kitchen for a snack finding Jaiden sitting on the couch about to turn on the TV.
He looked at me in an odd way.
Tumblr media
“Hey?”
“What are you planning on watching?”
“Don’t know yet. What are you watching currently?”
“The Vampires Live On.”
“Yeah  I heard that’s supposed to be good. You like it?”
“Yeah. You should check it out.  I’m on episode 2 it’s really good.”
“Noted.”
“Taylor and Dad are still at the DMV?”
“Yep, Taylor had one job.  To make her appointment for her driving test and exam and she didn’t. Now they’re waiting to be seen. Of course she blamed the app and not herself.”
Tumblr media
“God… Dad is probably livid.  You know he just hates sitting somewhere waiting.”
“Yep.”
“I’ll be sure not to be around when they get back, he’s going to be grumpy.”
“Yep.  I’m taking Bebe to the lake.”
“Have fun.”
“We will.”
One Hour Ago
I had dozed off binge watching the show and woke up when my phone buzzed.
Taylor: Riley help!
Riley: What’s wrong?
Taylor: Can you come to the DMV right now?
Riley:  Why?
Taylor:  I need you.
Riley:  Why?
Taylor:  I need a tampon. I’m in the bathroom. I’m embarrassed to come out.
Dad, even though he could be grumpy at times,  when it came to “womanly concerns”  as he called them, he had no problem going to buy what we needed and even coming back with our favorite chocolate candy in tow with him without us asking.  He knew I liked kit kats, Taylor, peanut butter cups, and mom likes a bag of bite size snickers. Dad tried to be sensitive to those things.  He had taught Jaiden to be sensitive too, and Jaiden was just like dad in that aspect.
When I didn’t respond Taylor texted again.
Taylor:  Dad is mad at me because I didn’t make an appointment on the DMV app, and I don’t want to have to send him out to get something else, or he’ll go nuclear. Can you help me please?
Riley: I'll be there in a little bit.
I put on my shoes and  headed down the stairs.
Jaiden perked up when I walked in the room.
"Where are you going?"
"Taylor needs me."
"She's fine with Dad."
"It's a girl emergency.”
“Oh. You should change though.”
“No time. I won’t be gone long.”
Jaiden sighed.  Now I think my brother knew exactly what I was walking right into.  Tornado Taylor.
Tumblr media
I ran out the door.  It didn’t take me long to get to the DMV,  I went immediately to the bathrooms.
“Taye?”
“Last stall.”
“Well open the door.”
I was surprised to see Taylor dressed identically to me.
“What are you doing?”
“I banked on the chance you wouldn’t change your clothes.  So funny story.. I need your help for something else.”
Tumblr media
“I don’t like where this is going Taye…”
“So I totally didn’t study for the written test, can you take it for me?”
“What?   No!!!!”
“I will totally ace the driving part.”
“Taylor no! This has to be illegal or something. NO! Or the very least identity theft.”
“Theft is a strong word, especially if I’m letting you borrow my identity.”
Tumblr media
“That is not how it works Taylor!! Did you even need the tampons? Stupid me of course you didn’t!!!”
There was a knock on the door.
“Taylor, they called your number, time to take your test.”
“Okay Dad, I’ll be right out.”
“Riley come on!!!”
“No.”  I said in a forced whisper.
“Riley please!?!?!?!”
“NO!!!”
“Then you’re stuck in here until we can sneak you out.”  Taylor commented in a matter of fact way.     I couldn’t believe I got myself roped into Taylor’s shenanigans yet again.
Tumblr media
About thirty minutes later Taylor returned.
“Dad went to the vending machine to get us drinks.  Let’s get you out before he sees you or your car.”
I had almost made it to the door out of the DMV when I heard my father’s voice.
“What’s going on here?”
I turned around to face my father.
“Hey Dad.”
“Riley, what are you doing here?”
He took a moment to look at the two of us, his face turning bright red.
“Taylor Jeanine Brooks you have three seconds to tell me what’s going on.”
Taylor smiled her megawatt smile, “So Dad, funny story….”
Tumblr media
“Nope, nevermind, that’s probably going to be a lie. Riley, tell me the truth.”
“Dad…..”
“TELL ME THE TRUTH RIGHT NOW RILEY ANTONIA BROOKS!!! RIGHT NOW!!!!!!”  My father’s voice boomed in anger. This was probably the most angry I had seen him in a long time.
Annnd… we’re back to where you guys came in.  Tornado Taylor got me again.   I could expect nothing less than World War  Brooks when we all got back home.  I was able to drive myself back home, and you know what?  I didn’t feel the least bit sorry for Taylor having to ride all the way home with our father who was as angry as a disturbed hornet’s nest.
The moment we got home  Jaiden came into the living room when he heard all the commotion.
“Riley, give me your car keys. You’re grounded.”
“But Dad…. I didn’t do anything.  Can I at least tell my side of the story?”
Tumblr media
“She had no clue what she was walking into Dad. Look at Riley’s phone.”  Jaiden spoke up for me.
At that moment, I could have completely saved myself  and given my father the phone, but something was stirring in my stomach.
“Riley, give me your phone.”
“No.”
Tumblr media
Shocked, Taylor glared at me.  Even though Tornado Taylor was a mess at times, read all the time, I still loved her to the moon and back again.
“I am trustworthy, and if I say I didn’t take the test for her, you should believe me Dad.  Despite the overwhelming data that says we did something shady.  You should believe ME….I’ve never given you a reason not to trust me.  So, if not giving you my phone right now means I’m grounded too,  I guess I will be grounded too.”
I dropped my car keys on the table and walked upstairs towards my room.
Tumblr media
In the distance I heard the equivalent of my sister falling on the sword for me.
“Dad, please don’t ground Riley.  She did nothing wrong, this is all my fault.”
From that moment on, the relationship between us changed.  My sister never again saw me as someone she could manipulate to get what she wanted, but let’s be honest, she should have never been looking at me that way in the first place.

looking for asks? who are your top 5 and why!
Hey Jelly! I pondered my orb and it told me that you were asking for my top 5 singers, so here goes:
Tori Amos. She and her music were so important to me in my twenties and early thirties. Essential, really. I literally wouldn't be the same person without her lyrics. It's like her music was made for me. I'm not listening to her as much anymore, but she's still my number one, definitely the best American pop musician and lyricist of her generation (or the 20th century tbh.)
Regina Spektor. (Yes problematic, I know.) I can't cancel her completely. Yet. Because her music was my anchor in my twenties. The way she writes about love ... yeah, she gets me. I get her.
Vanessa Carlton. Yes, you can laugh. She's underrated, though. I bought her debut at a library sale ~ 15 years ago and realized that she's so much more than You Know What. I really relate to her albums, it feels like we went through similar things at the same time. I listen to her a lot.
Joanna Newsom. My princess, my baby girl, I don't understand you but I love you. Colleen is my favorite song of all time, probably.
There's a tie for number 5 because there are so many (Kate Nash, PJ Harvey, India.Arie, Juana Molina, Solange, ......) so I'm gonna go with Sequoyah Murray because his voice is everything and he's criminally underrated. More people need to listen to him, his music is magic.
Thanks for the ask!!!

The Batman Part II Gets Pushed Back to 2026
Tumblr media
Brace yourselve Battinson fans. It looks like we gotta wait a whole year longer to see Robert Pattinson brooding under the cowl again. That's right, Warner Bros. just threw a batarang-sized curveball and delayed "The Batman Part II" by a whole year. Instead of gracing theaters with its dark and gritty glory in October 2025, we'll now have to wait until October 2, 2026. Now, before you start prepping your Batmobile for a one-man riot on the streets of Burbank, there are a few things to consider. First, making a superhero flick this epic ain't exactly a walk in the park. Think about all the fight choreography, the CGI fight scenes where Batman throws down with a giant mutant penguin (well, maybe not that last one, but you get the idea), and of course, perfecting Pattinson's smoldering stare. It all takes time. Plus, on the bright side, this delay frees up some space in the 2025 release schedule for some other interesting flicks. Maggie Gyllenhaal's directorial debut, "The Bride," starring Christian Bale and a whole mess of other talented folks, swoops in to take "The Batman Part II's" old October 2025 spot. And hey, who wouldn't want to see Bale back on the big screen, even if he's not rocking a cape and cowl this time around? Speaking of mobsters, get ready for a double dose because Robert De Niro's got two films shuffling around the release calendar. His flick "Alto Knights", a story about, you guessed it, the mob,  got pushed back a few months to March 2025. But hey, at least you won't have to wait that long to see double De Niro in action. Let's not forget the mysterious new project from Paul Thomas Anderson, "An Untitled Paul Thomas Anderson Event Film." This one's shrouded in secrecy, but we do know it features a star-studded cast with Leo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, and Regina Hall. That alone is a reason to mark your calendars for August 2025. So, while the wait for "The Batman Part II" stings a bit, there's plenty to keep us movie buffs entertained in the meantime. Just think of it as a chance to rewatch the first film (or ten times) and analyze every brooding glance Pattinson throws our way. Consider it homework for the epic sequel to come. Stay strong, Gotham citizens, the Bat-Signal will shine again soon enough. Just maybe not quite as soon as we initially thought. you are the dancing queen young and sweet, only seventeen dancing queen, feel the beat from the tambourine, oh yeah
the night of july 21st 2023 was in la vie en rose. almost everything was in pink. i, too, was even wearing pink! i love it. it's like i was in pinkland. i attended a debut of a family friend at the lopez mansion. so much history was in the place which was built in 1928.
i was part of the eighteen candles and i felt so honored. i gifted the debutant a set of jewelry since i think eighteen is the perfect age to fully transition into a lady. i think dressing up is one of the most fun things a girl can ever do and what is dressing up without the jewels? they make you look delicate, dainty, and divine. i hope she likes it.
i have so much stories to tell about that night. i don't even know where to begin.. but let's start with me taking pictures at the garden and ended up being scared because the frogs started to come out! i mean it was almost sunset so, yeah. hello, frogs. i rushed back at the doorstep of the mansion to only find myself in a photo booth. i love that they have polaroid cameras to take pictures of guests and then hang them at the background. ah, vintage *regina george's voice*. i was so lucky because the staff gave me my two polaroid shots. they're only supposed to give one and the other one was supposed to be in display but they allowed me to have it. bless them!
suddenly, i heard that the host was speaking and telling everyone to be in their tables because the party was about to start. i took it as a sign to enter and be seated at my assigned table with my sister and cousin. the program began, i gave my well wishes, and... me and my cousin had fun goofing around before the dinner started. typical pisces thing. while we were lining up for dinner, there was this beautiful middle-aged woman clad in a sparkly gold dress who started kissing our cheeks, thanking us for attending! wow way too early to be that drunk but, hey, at least she's having fun.
after dinner, the program continued and the awards followed. my cousin won star of the night. she truly deserves it because she's a star. the night started to get deep and our moon was the disco ball. the program was finally done and the dance floor was open to everyone. we danced the night away, swayed our hips, sang at the top of our lungs. oh, to be young, wild, and yes, very free. i love this feeling. i love singing and dancing to old classic hits. they sure age like fine wine as the years go by. i felt like i was the dancing queen -- or was it really i?
anyway, after all the dancing, singing, laughter, exchanging stories, mingling with anybody and everybody, it's time to say farewell. but not too fast, too soon. i tried playing the piano. i can tell that it was already decades old because the keys have turned a shade of brown. at least, it survived the passing of time and still sounds like brand new. well, good thing was that i still remember a bit from my piano lessons from way back when i was but a child. we then started to pack up just like everyone else and made our way to the car. what a fun night it sure was.
the next day, my cousin and i talked about the happy times of the previous night. she mentioned that the beautiful middle-aged woman who was wearing a gold sparkly dress (remember her?) was the aunt of the debutant. oh, so that must be the reason why she was kissing and thanking us while lining up for dinner! my cousin also told me that she has recently broken up with her husband and is undergoing counselling. oh, so that's the reason why she was so drunk that early! i can't blame her. i mean alcohol won't surely fix her problems but water won't as well so let the woman be, for just one night. i feel so sad for her. i hope she gets past whatever she is going through.
you can never really judge a book by its cover. that woman sure looked like she was having the time of her life that night -- greeting and smiling at everyone, singing her heart out, dancing like tomorrow will never come. little did i know that she was, very deep down inside, heartbroken. guess what was also broken that night? her heels. she was dancing that much that she ended up barefoot. now this made me realize that it is not i who was the dancing queen. it was her. she owned the night. there's really nobody braver than a woman who can still smile despite being broken.
you can dance, you can jive having the time of your life ooh, see that girl watch that scene digging the dancing queen

Until You Hate Me (Liam x MC)
PART THREE - THE BEGINNING
Tumblr media
A/N: Yes, I do feel ashamed I forgot about this series for TWO years. I also am aware most of you, who have been tagged, dont even remember ever reading this series. If you’d like to be taken off the taglist just let me know because I don’t want to bother anyone. If you want a refresher - it’s the series where Regina pays Riley to be the worst suitor ever so that in two weeks, Liam would have to marry someone Regina picked for him. Previous parts are on my masterlist. Shoutout to the Nonny who motivated me to write this part. Hope y’all enjoy! Characters belong to PB.

“Welcome to Cordonia,” Liam said when the Royal Jet finally landed. He looked at Riley warily as she took in the sights. The flight was a total disaster and made him rethink his whole life. If he hadn’t known better he’d think she wanted to sabotage his mission.
“Looks sick,” she said and Liam sighed.
“Liam, Riley, the car is here. Come before anyone spots us.” Regina nodded towards their driver.
“Whoa, we have our own driver? That’s mad!”
Regina raised an eyebrow in a ‘do-not-overdo-it’ manner but Riley ignored it. For her it was either go hard or go home. Literally, because if she failed she’d go home with no money.
The ride from the private airport to the palace was silent; Riley was admiring the views, Liam was thinking if he made the right choice and Regina was already planning Liam’s wedding to Madeleine.
When they arrived, Regina excused herself and went straight into her office.
“What do you think?” Liam asked politely when they were the only two left.
“It looks so… majestic. Like something I’d expect a palace look like but at the same time like something I wouldn’t expect. It’s gorgeous.”
Liam turned to her stunned by her words. What happened to “sick” and “mad”? Maybe it wouldn’t be that bad, after all.
“Come inside,” he said and extended his hands towards her. She took it and then gasped at the interior.
“It’s so regal and so big and oof—” Riley was almost knocked out by a small, fluffy ball that jumped at her.
“Ah, this is Chance, Maxwell’s dog. He must feel you’re a good person because he is never that happy about strangers.” Liam smiled as he leaned to take her coat. She handed it to him and when Liam walked away to hang it, she bent over to Chance.
“Hey, buddy! I’m super flattered you like me but can you please bite me or start barking at me so Liam doesn’t think I’m good?” She asked and Chance titled his head in confusion. “You see,” she lowered her voice, “I have a mission to complete.”
When Chace still couldn’t understand, Riley tried to speak his language.
“Woof woof woof woof,” she barked at Chance in low voice.
“Um… is everything okay, lady Riley?” Liam asked, suddenly appearing behind her. Shoot.
“Mhm. Just talking to that cute little muffin. And please, call me Riley. I’m no lady.”
“If you insist. Would you like to see your room?”
“Sure! Does it have a mini fridge? I bet it’s totally dope!”
Liam shook his head in disbelief. Riley changed her mood every few minutes. He couldn’t figure her out. Sometimes she was serious and really fun to talk to but then she changed again and acted like a spoiled teenager.
“Here we are.” Liam motioned the room when they finally reached the guest chamber. “It doesn’t have a mini fridge but you can call any of the staff members to ask for whatever you’d like, anytime.”
“Cool.”
“Ah, Liam! Riley! I am so glad to see you both here!” Regina exclaimed with a smiled on her face. “We have a dinner today with a few of our friends. Liam, please help lady Riley to prepare for it.”
“Of course, Regina. Who are we expecting?” Liam asked.
“Duchess Olivia Nevrakis, Lord Neville, Duchess Adelaide, her daughter and Duke Godfrey, lady Hana Lee and her parents, and a few of the court members.”
Liam nodded politely but started to panic internally. Lord Neville, Godfrey and Adelaide weren’t exactly the first people he wanted Riley to be introduced to. He knew too well how they treated commoners and how awful they could be. He had only about two hours before the dinner to go through the royal protocol, table manners, dress code and how to address who. When he looked up at Riley he noticed she was already studying him.
“Everything’s alright?”
“Yes, it is. I just thought we would have more time before your debut.”
“Oh, don’t worry about that! I was born ready!” she said reassuringly, which, ironically, made Liam even less reassured.
~~~~
“So when I see Hana Lee’s dad I should say ‘ni hao’, right?”
“Correct! And can you please repeat how you would address Duchess Olivia?”
“Your Grace,” Riley replied.
“Exactly. And Lord Neville?”
“…Also your Grace?”
“Yes. How would you address me, then?”
“Your Majesty?”
“No, Majesty is used for Kings and Queens. I’m not a King yet so I ought to be addressed ‘your Highness’.”
“So Regina is her Majesty?” Riley asked.
“Precisely. Now, what is my title?”
“Prince?”
“Full title.”
“Prince Louis of Cordonia.”
“Ye—What? What Louis?”
“Your name isn’t Louis?”
“No,” he shook his head. “It’s Liam.”
“Oh, right! Sorry, I’ve always had a problem with remembering names.”
Liam smiled but wanted to scream. Remembering names was probably one of the most important things Riley had to learn. And she forgot even his.
“Let me get this straight, when I talk to you I always have to use ‘your highness’?”
“When we’re with nobility, yes. It shows respect. When there’s only me and you, or friends and family, you can call me by my name,” he explained.
“Which is Louis!”
“Liam,” he corrected. Again.
“Sorry! Sorry!” Riley apologized. “I’ll just need something to associate you with… Oh! I know! I used to listen to One Direction a lot and Liam was the name of one of the singers! I liked him a lot!”
“Whatever works for you.” Liam smiled, feeling less and less enthusiastic about his mission.
~~~~
Two hours and three braincell losses later, Riley was walking arm in arm with Liam, into the ballroom. She was wearing a very expensive dress, more expensive than everything she owned altogether. She was very stressed and started to regret coming here. Pretending to be the worst suitor in front of Liam was one thing, but pretending to be the worst suitor in front of all Cordonian nobility was a completely different thing.
“Look, there’s Xinghai, he’s coming here,” Liam whispered and Riley nodded as the man approached them. Liam nudged Riley.
Okay. Show time.
“Hey hoe!” She yelled, making everyone freeze.
I hate myself.
“Riley!” Liam hissed, pinching her arm.
“Excuse me?” Xinghai asked as if not believing his ears.
“I think Riley tried to say ‘ni hao’, is that right?” Liam raised his eyebrows and Riley felt sick.
“Yes! Ni hao! I’m so sorry, I’m very bad at languages!”
Xinghai shook his head. “If you say so.”
“Hi, I’m Hana! And this is my mother, Lorelai.” A girl with a very friendly face extended her hand as if she hadn’t noticed that huge faux-pas. Her mom barely smiled at her.
“Nice to meet you.”
“Your Highness.” A man approached them and raised a glass. “I feel deeply honored to be invited here today. Her Majesty mentioned you would bring an American suitor, is this that lovely lady?”
Riley didn’t know who it was but she sure hated him already. She looked at Liam and realized she wasn’t the only one thinking so.
“Lord Neville. I am very happy you could join us. Yes, this is lady Riley, my suitor. Lady Riley, this is Lord Neville.”
“Lord? Like Lord of the Rings? Is that even a real title?” she asked.
“Excuse me?” Neville was confused and Liam embarrassed. From the corner of her eye, Riley could see Regina smiling at the sight.
At least someone is happy with what I’m doing.
“I believe we haven’t met.” A blond woman interrupted them, holding a glass of champagne in one hand and a very unhappy man in the other.
“This is Duchess Adelaide, Duke Godfrey and their daughter, Countess Madeleine. And this lovely woman by my side is lady Riley.”
“Hi y’all! Louis told me so much about you!” She heard Liam sighing.
“Hmph” was all Godfrey said. The rest of the family looked confused.
“Who’s Louis?” Adelaide asked.
“What happened to One Direction association?” Liam whispered to her when the family wasn’t looking.
“I forgot Louis was in the band, too,” she replied.
“If you excuse us,” Liam turned to Adelaide, “but we need to say hello to Duchess Olivia. Thank you for coming.”
He quickly led Riley far from Adelaide and Godfrey, avoiding other court members on the way. He couldn’t do this. At least not today. Riley clearly wasn’t ready.
“Why hello there,” a lady with red hair and a matching dress greeted them.
“Olivia. Hello. How are you?” Liam started a small talk and Riley noticed he was more relaxed talking to her than he was talking to other people. She must be a friend, she thought.
“I’m great. Haven’t been to a party that is as much fun as this one. And it’s all thanks to you. I’m Olivia.”
“Riley. You’re the Ice Queen?” Riley asked remembering Lythikos was a winter wonderland. She hoped Olivia would be offended just like the others but to her surprise the Duchess burst out laughing.
“Ice Queen! I like her already,” she said as she wiped a tear from her eye. “Absolutely loved when she questioned Neville’s title. The man’s pain in the ass.”
“I’m glad you find it funny,” Liam said firmly. Olivia shrugged and turned to take another glass of wine.
“I’m really sorry I embarrassed you, Louis.”
“Liam,” he corrected.
“Liam,” Riley repeated. “I’ve just came to Cordonia and had only two hours to take it all in. I’ll be better in time.” Not sure how better at making you hate me I can get though.
“It’s fine. Listen, it’s me who should be apologizing. As you said, you just came here and within a few hours you had to learn things I learned throughout the years.”
Riley’s eyes widened. She embarrassed him, she humiliated him and he still apologized? She felt awful.
“I still feel bad. I promise I won’t let you down,” she lied and Liam smiled.
“I’m happy to hear that because we’re visiting our apple orchard tomorrow and the press will be there to meet you, too.”
Riley gulped as she smiled at Liam.
That only meant she had to try even harder.

So We Picked Up A Pen And A Microphone

Title Inspiration- Ex Wives from Six
so for those wondering what the countdown in my bio has been about anyways yeah uhhhhhhhh i am legally allowed to post this today since it’s my birthday and therefor i am legally obligated to self indulge, thank you for your time
tws- none that i can think of, but please tell me if there are any
Even before the show had started, back when all of them were still in rehearsals and the very few voluntary conversations any of them ever had were stilted at best or arguments just barely disguised as passionate discussions at worst, Anne was never the earliest to places. Partially due to not really wanting to wake up at Too Fucking Early O’Clock, partially because she just genuinely wasn’t the most pontual person- very rarely was she not at least a few minutes late to events.
But today was a bit of an exception. Today was the opening of their West End run, and she couldn’t help the slight skip to her step as she walked from the tube station towards the theatre, for once the first one to get going there. Not that she wasn’t familiar with the theatre or the show or any of that- but she would be lying if she said there wasn’t a reason.
During their UK tour, they had one alternate- Regina. She’d go on whenever any of the queens were ill or busy, but only one alternate for six queens was clearly too little- something Anne herself had brought up with the production team, with no action taken. Of course, as anyone with half a brain could’ve guessed, this resulted in multiple shows having to be cancelled and all of them, Regina included, being exhausted by the end of their run.
So once the West End run was announced, so were the changes to the cast- the addition of two alternates and a swing. And she was shocked when she noticed that she recognized them- from the posts Regina had made with her friends.
She’d looked into them- call it paranoia or stalking or what have you, but she’d prefer not to be around people she knew nothing about, especially not people who were going to be acting as herself when she couldn’t. She had their names- the alternates being Skye Jackson and Ally Rodriguez and the swing Gretchen Warren- and the social media that the show’s account had tagged them with.
Gretchen was the second oldest out of the four of them, just 2 years younger than Regina at 22, with dark brown wavy hair and green eyes. She didn’t seem to have much in the way of public stuff- her account had been set to private when she was tagged, and it was only after Anne had gotten permission to follow her that it was set to public. It was mainly personal, with a few pictures of relatively small local productions that never fully took off. This was understandable- she’d graduated just a year ago, and not everyone had a job offer right out of college. Now Skye and Ally were a different story.
Ally was the youngest, having turned 19 in the past November, just two months earlier, with light brown hair and some of the darkest eyes she had ever seen. A lot of the posts were personal, typical teenager stuff like photos of hang outs or posts at parties. Some were more serious- activism or mental health centered stuff that hinted more into stuff Ally seemed to keep closer to her chest. And there were also some tiny school productions of musicals, as well as covers she seemed to mostly do with her friends- some of them being her fellow alternates and swing, and the closest Skye.
Skye had her curious from the moment she’d seen the clips posted of them in rehearsal. At 19, just a few months older than Ally, and with jet black hair with teal tips and purple eyes, she couldn’t help but focus on her as she acted out what she recognized as her own song. A quick browse through her profile and she noticed the girl’s personality was an awful lot like her own- all huge grins and cocky smirks and quickly thought-up quips and arguments. Her posts, along with the videos she posted on the Youtube channel linked in her bio, were a mix of everything- personal stuff, covers, productions, announcements, and other more serious stuff that she seemed to also avoid.
She’d texted all of them as soon as she could, and although she’d gotten along with them fairly well, conversation had died fairly quickly due to the usual early-friendship awkwardness.
That hadn’t been the case for some of her other cast members, however, as she’d heard Cathy talk about Skye as if the two were friends, and Kitty seemed to have gotten along with Ally quite well. There was a part of her that couldn’t help but wonder why no one had managed to connect with Gretchen, but she figured they’d have time for that once performances started and they had more time to be around one another.
And now, she hoped she wouldn’t be stuck to the sidelines as she made her way to the theatre, hoping to be the first to meet the new cast members.
As she turned a corner, she couldn’t help the grin that formed when she saw a familiar head of golden hair a bit farther ahead on the street. “Oi, Regina!”
She gave her a wave when the girl looked up, and the latter gave the barest hint of a smile before Anne made a dash towards her. “So, how’s our superswing?” Anne’s grin only broadened at the soft chuckle Regina gave- it was clear no one could quite avoid the excitement of opening night, stoic as Regina was (or at least tried to).
“Admittedly, I’m pretty excited.” She replied, only confirming Anne’s suspicions. “Plus, I feel like the six of you will like the new girls. Though, Skye and Ally will bring more chaos into it all.”
“Hey now, Aragon and Jane live with me, right?” She replied with a smirk, earning another soft chuckle from the girl as they turned the last corner- the one that lead them into the street of the theatre.
“I believe they do, yes.” She agreed softly. “And I’ve been dealing with those two for a good decade or so now, I can handle them.”
“How bad are they?”
Regina hesitated at that question, physically stopping just a few feet away from the theatre before turning to face her with a smile and a playful light in her eyes that Anne didn’t think she’d ever seen. “Skye is you and Ally is Kath, only those two are childhood friends and Ally has much less self control than Kath has, so they’re much worse than the pair of you.”
Anne stared at her, mouth slightly agape, before chuckling with her trademark confident smirk. “Well then, guess me and Kitty will have to up our game.”
Regina gave a soft chuckle, shaking her head as she walked the last few steps to the theatre, Anne right behind her as she came inside the foyer.
Neither spent much time there- apart from a quick greeting to the ticket booth worker, they both seemed to agree to head to see the dressing rooms as quick as possible.
As soon as they were in the dressing room hall, Anne could hear soft voices from the farthest away dressing room, voices that sounded vaguely familiar even if she couldn’t pin names to them, coupled with musical theatre tunes muffled by the voices.
Before Anne herself could react, Regina chuckled softly and made a quick dash for it, opening the door. Assorted greetings sounded from it, but Anne was too deep into her own thoughts to properly process them, simply following Regina into the dressing room while registering, from the corner of her eye the names of the four girls engraved on the dressing room’s door.
The first thing that caught her eye was a book, left on the counter right of her. On its cover, Anne spotted a portrait of a familiar girl with fiery red hair and dark eyes much like her own. Before she had a chance to reply, however, a voice spoke up.
“Oh, that’s mine.” Anne looked up to meet sharp violet eyes and a wide grin, and immediately she returned it. “Anne Boleyn, right? Nice to finally meet you- in person, I mean.”
“Right back at you.” Anne returned, sitting on one of the vacant chairs before handing the book to Skye. “I see you’ve done your homework.”
That earned a laugh from the girl. “Eh, I’ve always been a Tudor nerd, to be honest-”
“Can confirm.”
Skye turned back to face who Anne was pretty sure was Ally with an amused, playfully annoyed smirk. “Thank you, Ally.” She replied with emphasis on the girl’s name, before turning back to Anne. “But uh, yeah, have been since I was a kid. Elizabeth is the one they focused more in school- well, apart from Henry, but I was never too interested in him- so that’s where I started and it just kinda grew from there.”
Anne nodded with a soft chuckle. “I see, ‘nd I’m guessing it’s safe to assume you were really excited when you got the job.”
“She called me screaming about it.” Anne looked up at the quiet, soft tone, meeting gentle green eyes and a shy, if amused, grin. “So yes, it is safe to assume so.” Gretchen continued, before falling silent.
Anne nodded, but this time it was Ally who spoke up first. “And uh, just before you ask, I’m first cover Cleves and Parr, Regina is first cover Aragon and Seymour, and Skye is first cover Bo- well, you, and Howard.” She couldn’t help but chuckled softly at the girl’s stumble, before nodding.
“Well then, I can’t wait for a chance to see you all perform.” ________________________________________________________________
That chance, it turned out, would come just that Sunday, their last day of the week and a double show day. Though, not for Anne herself, at least not the first show.
Anne seemed to have gotten herself roped into a last minute interview organized by the show’s producers, and so, instead of the first (and only) debut being Ally’s in the evening show as Cathy, and since Gretchen had to call out due to illness, it seemed Skye would get the honor of first debut as Anne.
And quite frankly, Kath couldn’t wait for it.
Even as she got on stage, with the white lights simply showing their silhouettes backlit to the audience, she couldn’t help but shoot Skye a quick glance, looking up and down at the girl’s turquoise outfit, before fixating for just a moment on her hair, a mix of jet black and the near exact same shade as her costume, before averting her gaze when the first beats of the show sounded.
Kath let her mind run on autopilot during the show, up until just a bit after Catherine’s solo.
“Yeah, you know… the one, you’ve been waiting for!”
The audience sounded softly at that line, as if heating up for the proper cheer, and Kath couldn’t help but all but bounce through the choreography as they prepared for what would usually be Anne’s big reveal, but today would be Skye’s.
“Anne Boleyn!”
The end of the intro to the song was met with laughter from the audience at the sight of Skye sat on the steps, in between Maria and Joan, staring at her hand as if she were holding a phone. She let out a soft, slightly confused giggle along with the audience, waiting until they quieted down before speaking.
“Literally what are th-” She looked up, as if only now noticing the audience, and then seemed to shrink into herself the tiniest bit, although her confident smirk betrayed her actual feelings- she was loving this. “Oh. Sorry!”
At that, she all but jumped onto her feet as the first notes of Don’t Lose Ur Head sounded, and the show was on the road.
As they performed, even after the song was over, Kath couldn’t help but analyze the way Skye acted. It was confident, but not cocky- it was self assured, and grounded, as if she didn’t think she was better than all of them, she knew she was better than all of them. And she would be damned if she didn’t show it.
It seemed to work, as Skye’s delivery of Anne’s one liners had the audience all but roaring all the time, and by the end of the show it seemed as if Skye had conquered the hearts of all audience members.
It was almost scary. But at the same time, fitting. She may have not known Skye for long, but even then she could tell she was good at persuading people. She was impressed, if she was being honest.
It was when leaving the stage that the problems started.
One tiny misstep was all it took, and suddenly Kath had nearly fallen, pain shooting up from her ankle and the only thing keeping her from doing so being the tight grip on her arm.
If it weren’t for the fact that she was in really high spirits and the very light feeling of a costume’s fabric brushing against her arm, she would’ve definitely panicked.
As it was, however, she managed to keep herself together just enough to regain her balance, pressing more on her good foot, turning around as soon as the pressure around her arm was released, coming face to face with Skye, who looked both incredibly concerned and incredibly apologetic.
“I’m sorry I held you so tight, I just wanted to make sure you didn’t fall. Are you alright?”
Kath almost nodded. But then she tried to set more pressure on her hurt foot, and a brand new wave of pain shot up, forming tears in the corners of her eyes.
“Okay, that’s a no.” Skye’s awkward half laugh almost made Kath feel just a tiny bit better. “‘S okay! Probably just a twisted ankle, there’s no reason for it to be anything worse. Can I help you to your dressing room?”
After Kath nodded, she leaned just enough against Skye as the latter wrapped an arm around her shoulders, gently helping her up the stairs and to her dressing room.
Once Kath was sitting on the dressing room’s couch with one foot propped up and Skye sat on the opposite arm rest with a few anti inflammatories (“you underestimate how often I twist my ankle, or get hurt in general,” was her response when Kath had asked her why she just had some on them) in one hand and a glass of water in the other, she took off her show shoe as carefully as she could.
“Yeah, that’s definitely twisted.” Skye stated with a calm certainty as Kath stared warily at her swollen up ankle. She looked up when she got handed the meds and glass, taking them without another word before letting her head rest against the back of the couch.
“It just had to happen on a double show day, huh.” She grumbled, just managing a half-smile that earned her a chuckle from Skye.
“Yeah, it sucks ass. But hey, don’t stress! Better for you to get some rest so you can be back as soon as you can.” Skye reminded softly, and Kath couldn’t help a quiet chuckle when Skye leaned in and tapped the tip of her nose with her finger.
They both looked towards the door when they heard it open, and a very concerned looking Anne peeked in through it, clearly winded from what Kath had to assume was running. “Okay, sorry, I literally came running as soon as I heard what happened.”
At Anne’s slightly panicked tone, Skye gave a soft smile, before standing up. “I’ll give you both some time.” ________________________________________________________________
“She likes you.”
Regina’s voice, calm and serene as always, still managed to surprise Skye as she closed the dressing room’s door behind her. “How so?” She retorted as she took her usual seat next to the older girl, raising an eyebrow.
Regina gave a soft chuckle at that. “Kath doesn’t trust people easily. You can hardly blame her, after everything that happened to her, but still. She trusts you, though- she wouldn’t have let you help her otherwise.”
Skye looked down at the counter while shrugging, feeling her cheeks heat up as she blushed and staying quiet for a minute before looking back up, unusually serious. “Well, yeah, but healing also makes it easier for you to trust people again. You know that as well as I do, ‘Gina.”
Regina’s gaze hardened slightly at that, but still Skye didn’t back down, looking back at her while she waited for an answer. “Maybe so,” she finally settled on, “but even so.”
“I got it. I was just trying to make sure she felt comfortable.”
“She wouldn’t have let you stay if she wasn’t. Either that, or the others would’ve come in way earlier. Jane definitely would have, that woman has a sixth sense.” Neither of them could hold back their snickers at that comment, but even so Regina was the first to regain composure, as always. “So I think it’s safe to say you did just fine.”
Skye nodded at that, before reaching forward to grab her “K” choker. “Regardless, I’ve got bigger things to focus on right now.” She let out a soft sigh, a mix of worry and excitement in her voice. “It’s Howard time, I guess.” ________________________________________________________________
“Divorced.”
The audience’s chatter quieted down as Aragon’s booming voice filled the theatre, save for a few soft cheers or muffled squeals, and Ally could barely stay still as she waited for her turn.
“Beheaded.”
The audience full on cheered as her girlfriend’s voice sounded, clear and confident but still so distinctly young and playful.
But she couldn’t stop to analyse just yet- she had a show to do.
“Survived.”
A similar, or perhaps even louder cheer broke after she’d spoke, and Ally couldn’t help but shoot a quick glance towards Skye, both wearing matching, wide grins, that they both were quick to hide as Aragon moved on with the show, and they both followed the choreography they’d rehearsed to the point of knowing one another’s first covers at least semi decently. Not decently enough to actually play them, but semi decently.
She went through most of Ex-Wives focused on the choreography and words, refusing to let herself mess up on the first song of her fucking West End debut- she knew how harshly swings and alternates were judged, and she wasn’t about to risk it. It was midway through the queens’ individual intros, however, where her body began to move on near auto pilot while she did the choreography.
“Funny how we all discuss that but never Henry’s lil’-”
“Prick up your ears, I’m the Katherine who lost her head!”
Ally could barely hear their “beheaded!” over the audience’s cheer when Skye piped up, and even Skye, who Ally was (unfortunately) very aware of how loud Skye was naturally, had to raise her tone to make herself heard over their screams.
“For my promiscuity, outside of wed! Lock up your husbands, lock up your sons, K Howard is here and the fun’s begun!”
“Survived.”
Ally couldn’t help but feel that familiar mix of anxiety and excitement pool at the bottom of her stomach while she stepped forward, facing the audience- and more specifically the front rows, as she was looking slightly downward- as calmly as she could manage.
“Five down, I’m the final wife. I saw him to the end of his life.” Hand on her waist, she looked up to the rest of the stalls, before moving her gaze up to the circle and its slips as she sung. “I’m the survivor, Catherine Parr.” A nod towards the audience as she raised the fist that was previously on her waist, the women behind her doing the same. “I bet you wanna know how we got this far.”
They went about the show without any problems, but it was after the “I have the plague” joke where she could see the audience (for some members literally) lean forward in their seats.
“Okay, okay, okay!” She spoke up, waiting until the four women had quieted before continuing. “You know what, I think it’s time we heard from our next queen, K Howard!”
The audience absolutely roared as Skye stepped forward, and Ally could barely keep a proud grin off her face as Skye did a tiny curtsy.
Then, she had to physically keep herself from jumping when she saw someone move forward from the corner of her eye, calming when she noticed it was Anne. “Babes, who’s that again?”
Skye’s excited grin fell off her face, and even if Ally knew by the gleam in her eyes that it was all an act, she could barely keep herself from going to comfort her.
Ally felt like she was in a daze as the scenes went on- it was only right before All You Wanna Do when she snapped out of it.
“So yeah! I can’t even begin to imagine how I could compete with you all!” Skye paused, letting the audience laugh, before continuing. “Oh wait, like this!”
And thus the song was on. Skye kept the confident yet childlike act up throughout for the first half of the song, quick smirks and winks towards the audience frequent for the first two verses and choruses. It was after the third chorus ended where things started to change.
“So we got married.” With a nervous chuckle and smile, Skye addressed the audience, rocking back and forward just a tiny bit. “Woo!” Her voice was higher pitched than usual, even as she tried to stay calm (or at least tried to act like she was trying to stay calm).
She went through the fourth verse with a soft voice, so unlike what she’d done before. It was near the end, however, after the final “connection”, that it began to change, turning into a near roar as she put her full emotion into the ending chorus.
“The only thing, the only thing, the ONLY thing you wanna do is-” She tsked, then huffed, almost stumbling as she threw her head back. And then the audience blew up.
After that, Ally wasn’t quite sure what happened. If she was being honest with herself, she went on autopilot for most of the rest of the show. It was only near the end of the final song that she actually snapped out of it, when Skye approached her as they neared the last official line of the show and the two did that same dance move from the very first dance break- take her hand, hold it up, curtsy, switch places. Then, they went into position for the end of the show.
“For, five, four, three, two, one more minute!” Maria’s drums roared, and Ally couldn’t keep a slightly tired grin off her face.
“We’re SIX!”

Below-freezing temperatures and bulky outerwear can make winter a challenging time, sartorially speaking, but come January, the gloves are off—both literally and figuratively—when Hollywood’s jet-set touches down in sunny Los Angeles for award season. Thanks to a blockbuster year in film, music, and television, the 2019 red carpets are an opportunity to make a major statement. Here, we’ve shown an early spotlight on 23 actors and musicians guaranteed to land spots on the 2019 awards season’s best-dressed lists. Let’s start with a red carpet renaissance woman: Lady Gaga is going to have an epic award season. We can’t wait to see what she wears to the Golden Globes, the Oscars, and the Grammys when she wins big for basically everything A Star Is Born is nominated for; her style evolution has been a true Hollywood glow-up! A close second and perennial team Who What Wear fave, Emma Stone is bound to inspire your next black-tie event look when she hits the red carpets in 2019. Think she’ll take any notes from her character, Abigail Masham, in The Favorite and go full baroque, or keep it completely contemporary with the latest from Louis Vuitton? Speaking of The Favourite ,  Joe Alwyn , aka Baron Masham, aka the first earl of Leicester in Mary Queen of Scots , is guaranteed to have a memorable awards season (especially if Taylor Swift is on his arm). The 27-year-old British actor had a banner year with four movies premiering in 2018, and undoubtedly cribbed a few style notes from several of Hollywood’s leading ladies—we have a feeling his star status is about to skyrocket. Of course, award season wouldn’t be a must-watch moment if not for a little healthy competition. Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie , two of 2018’s best dressed and co-stars/rivals in Mary Queen of Scots , are absolutely going to slay—sartorially speaking. Spoiler alert: There’s a clear winner in the film (and, um, history), but we’d be absolutely thrilled if the top red carpet ranking featured a tie between these two sensational style stars. While we’re revisiting history, let us remember the ground-breaking, earth-shaking, and red carpet–rousing movie of the year, Black Panther . Boasting an all-star lineup and memorable world premiere in which the cast paid homage to African royalty, we hope this stylish crew—especially Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan, Leticia Wright, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, and Angela Bassett —continues its winning streak throughout award season. Wakanda forever! Crazy Rich Asians , one of the most over-the-top and enjoyable fashion films of the year, was a feast for the eyes both on screen and at the red carpet premiere. Constance Wu , the movie’s leading lady, worked with celeb stylist and Who What Wear contributor  Micaela Erlanger  for the press tour last summer, creating gorgeous looks for a range of appearances. We love how they play with fashion together and can’t wait to see which designer is selected for the Globes in January. Fashion’s latest It boy, Timothée Chalamet , had an incredible 2017 with Oscar-nominated films Lady Bird and Call Me by Your Name , and this year, he added Golden Globe nominee to his list of accolades. Not only does the Beautiful Boy star embrace bold colors and prints, but he’s also reportedly self-styled. We’re impressed! If you haven’t already heard of Kiki Layne , don’t worry—you will soon. Her breakout film, If Beale Street Could Talk , an adaptation of James Baldwin’s 1974 novel by Oscar-winning director Barry Jenkins, has already been nominated for several Golden Globes ahead of its premiere. Kiki has a major year ahead of her with at least two other projects in the can, and we’re excited for her red carpet debut with Regina King, her fellow Beale Street star and Golden Globe nominee. Rounding out our list of film favorites is a newcomer, Elsie Fisher . At just 15, she has captured hearts as the cringe-worthy (in the best way!) ingenue of Bo Burnham’s directorial debut, Eighth Grade , which premiered over the summer. Elsie has already made an impression at smaller red carpet events, and she recently spoke to Vanity Fair about her affinity for suits, remarking, “I feel like suits are very me… I look poppin’ in ’em!” We couldn’t agree more. As far as red carpet style goes, we find musicians tend to be a bit more daring than actors, which is why we’re especially excited for the 2019 Grammys. One woman who never ceases to surprise us with her style chops is Cardi B, who is up for album of the year for Invasion of Privacy . Whether Cardi goes full-on glam, breaks a piece out of Versace’s archives, or debuts her upcoming collab with Fashion Nova, we know she’ll dress to impress—red bottoms, guaranteed. It’s no surprise that with the rise of the rosé wave in pop music came the return of cowboy boots . At the center of this ethereal yet empowering moment is singer Kacey Musgraves . The “Velvet Elvis” singer has already racked up several Country Music Awards but was recently nominated for album of the year for Golden Hour , transcending the confines of her genre, and presenting an opportunity to show off her unique mix of vintage-meets–high-fashion style at next year’s Grammys. We’ve had our eyes on Dua Lipa ever since she explained “New Rules” to us in 2017, and we were thrilled by her two Grammy nominations this year. Up for best new artist and best dance recording, this edgy British singer and street style star will undoubtedly make a major red carpet splash throughout 2019. Is there anything Tessa Thompson can’t do? In addition to her appearance in Janelle Monae’s much-buzzed-about “Pynk” music video, the Creed and Westworld star is a style chameleon who’s bound to thrive during award season—even if she’s just there to support her friends and castmates, the similarly suave Michael B. Jordan and Thandie Newton. Let’s talk about Lili Reinhart for a minute: Not only has she captured hearts as Betty (and Dark Betty!) on Riverdale for the past three seasons, but she’s also become a media darling, sharing insights into acting , acne , and of course, all things Archie. Notably, we love her brand-new campaign photos for the Mighty Company x Ilaria Urbanati celestial-inspired charity collection—hey, if anyone can pull of stars and stripes on a red carpet, it’s Lili. See you at the Emmys? If you haven’t already caught up on Atlanta , consider this an official mandate. You’ll probably recognize Zazie Beetz as Vanessa Keefer, Donald Glover’s character’s ex-girlfriend. Or maybe you remember her from Deadpool 2 as Domino, a mutant whose superpower is luck. Either way, Zazzie is definitely one to watch this red carpet season, especially since she’s being styled by Jason Bolden, whose other clients include Yara Shahidi and Sasha Lane. Be sure to look for her at this year’s Golden Globes supporting Donald, and hopefully again on the Emmys red carpet next fall. Finally, we’ve got the one and only  Busy Philipps. Unless you’ve completely opted out of pop culture and social media this year, Philipps has been on your mind—or more accurately, on your phone! A forever fave from early aughts teen dramas Dawson’s Creek and Freaks and Geeks , Philipps has BLOWN UP in 2018 thanks to her hilarious commentary, candor, and colorful style which is broadcast via her Instagram, recently released memoir, This Will Only Hurt a Little , and new E! show, Busy Tonight . Working with stylist Karla Welch (who also counts Tracee Ellis Ross and Sarah Paulson as clients), you know Busy’s bound to bust a move, whether on the red carpet, in her nightgown, or at a tiny trampoline class. Think I missed any potential red carpet style stars of 2019? Hit me up on Twitter or Instagram at @Drewblahblah and we’ll put them on Who What Wear’s radar before the New Year. Up Next:  From the Oscars to the Golden Globes, Cannes to the British Fashion Awards here’s where you’ll find the most glorious red carpet looks .

chick or chic?//cube ent./pd101//seonho
pairing: yoo seonho/reader genres: fluff, bullet list word count: 1870 summary: “he always stayed by you because of your smile, but what happens when the reason you lose your smile is him?” a/n: i think this is the longest thing i’ve ever posted but, dear by lord i love this boy. pls support him and his debut!!
Tumblr media
baby chick debuting with a mini album?
an hour to write before I fall asleep?
bring it on.
ok,
you and yoo seonho have been friends since you were like 6 bc your moms both dropped you off at the same daycare center
how convenient right
but you haven’t met seonho ‘till a while so bear with me here
I like me some backstory to the story
you’ve been coming to the daycare center for 4 months
you were so-so at making friends, kinda shy, but most of the times energetic
like literal spikes of energy could be seen coming out of your back lmao
sometimes you’d be called out on it by some of the kids or supervisors but like
u didn’t care
anyway, you’ve pretty much gotten your name thrown everywhere in the daycare center
and you were just playing with blocks and crashing toy cars into them (that’s what kids do right?)
then suddenly some of or supervisors start coming to you with a cake with lit up candles
“happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear (Y/N), happy birthday to you!”
and your 6 yr old brain was all like-huh?
but then they told you to make a wish and you blew out the candles
and you know how things done can’t come undone?
well, there’s your explanation for that being done
and then everyone just started cheering
plus the supervisors were all like: “I can’t believe your already 6, (Y/N)! you’ve grown so much!!~”
but again you’re just like: “im already 6??!??”
but your 6 yr old self just thinks that this atonement for not celebrating your birthday before you even went to the center
keep in mind you’ve only been there for 4 months so
ppl kept crowding you and the adults just starting distributing the cake
and this boy that you’ve never ever seen before sits next to you
and he just whispers into your ear “it’s my birthday too.”
“oh really? it’s not even my birthday today anyway!” you giggle
and this boy’s like huh
but seonho doesn’t do anything
nuh uh
he likes it when you laugh and smile
so you share your big slice of cake with him and play with him the entire day
you guys got picked up at the same time so your moms were just waiting by the door and you were saying bye and your moms were like “isn’t that just cute aww”
then suddenly one of the supervisors came and started bowing
“I’m sorry Mrs. Yoo and Mrs. (L/N), we switched up (Y/N)’s and Seonho’s birthdays so we ended up celebrating (Y/N)’s birthday today!”
and your moms were just like “that’s fine” but Seonho just looked a tad bit disappointed
and an unhappy Seonho makes an unhappy you so
you started crying, legit out of nowhere bc you felt so bad for him
plus you started screaming stuff like “it’s all my fault” and yea
and the adults try calming you down, but no, that didn’t work
but then seonho comes up and hugs you
and you surely calmed down while you held to his shirt
you felt reassured
and the grown-ups found this amusing
like you only met today but who knew?
next morning you brought a huge cake+a gift for seonho to make it up to him (ofc with your mum’s consent though)
you tell him to open his present and he did
what laid inside was a chick stuffie
it wasn’t big or anything, just average
and seonho’s grateful and all but he asks why you gave him that
“because you remind me of one?” you laugh
he likes to think that that laugh was also a present for him
and you play with him for the rest of the day
fast forward, your moms became acquainted then soon began to hang out with each other
which made you happy bc you got to see seonho more
when you guys were still at the daycare center you would bring him food
like juice boxes
but then like juice boxes turned to chocolate bars and then that turned into muffins
fast forward a little bit more to where you were now, both of you 14 and in high school, and you were still close af
oh and muffins turned to legit rice lunches bc he never had enough to eat lol
and you called him out on it a lot and he would either act offended or not care at all
that’s where he got his love for food from~
there were a couple loose strings here and there but that happens
you shared secrets, shared friends, shared test answers
you even got close to his brother and he got close to your sibling(s)
but everyone knows there’s gotta be a secret here and there somewhere
but you made several plots at 2AM to get to the bottom of whatever he seemed to hide even though it may not be your business
you were each other’s businesses anyway, right?
anyway
seonho had a dream of becoming famous
you admired him for that
and the school was going to be hosting an event where he would be starring in
and you were proud and almost started shedding a few tears
you: *sniff* so proud~~
him: not again (Y/N)
when the day of the show came on, he acted like a stuck up celeb
and you weren’t sure whether this was all just an act, or if it was just him but you weren’t gonna have this
you pulled him out of the corridor and slapped him just for him to get his sense back+you also gave him his rice box so
during the talent show when seonho was performing with the piano and singing you were videotaping him while standing up
you: “yeS, WORK IT SEONHO. gUYS THATS MY BEST FRiEND” (a total regina goerge’s mom moment here guys)
you were that extra lmao that seonho was mixed abt what you did but he felt so happy so you just cuddled (non-romantically) at his house after the show
next morning, you were waiting for seonho out of his house so you could walk to school together
but oh
he JUST HAD TO WALK OUT OF THE HOUSE WITH A LEATHER JAckET INSTEAD OF HIS REGULAR OL’ CARDIGAN HUh ASDFGHJKL
((i tried to look up seonho in a leather jacket and there were no images, pls someone get him into one i will die omfg lord))
and you just walked like you usually do, but this time in silence and no hitting or kicking
was he acting cold again?
he wasn’t talking at all
and even ppl started to stare
you just kind of avoided him for the whole day
it’s the type of thing that would get on celeb headlines: ‘(Y/N) Splits From a Cold Seonho?!?’
you were walking down the hall just mindlessly, wondering what to do with that extra rice lunch you had in your bag
but then you hear a couple girls whispering in a corner:
“oh my god, did you see seonho at the show last night? he has so much talent”
“but like did you see him today? he’s wearing a leather jacket and acting all cold today haha”
“he even drove (Y/N) away today, and they’ve been friends since they got here”
“that’s pretty chic though to be honest lol”
and there were murmurs of agreement to the last girls statement
and once you got outside you started laugh
cuz they just started calling seonho “chic”
you never thought that you would’ve ever lived to the day where someone would call that tall, clumsy, cutesy boy something along the lines of “chic”
but you felt a pang of jealousy when the girl’s started talking about him
yes, you were aware of your own feeling, you weren’t stupid like that
you went to his house, said hello to his mom, and went to his room
you didn’t want to mess around with anything but there was one thing couldn’t keep your eyes off
that chick plush you gave him when you were 6
it was sitting on his bed
you picked it up and admired it but quickly set it down
on the high bookcase shelf there was another chick plush
so you reached for it and looked at it in your hands
it was the exact same one but with a bow? which makes you confused
“what are you doing?” you hear behind you
oh shit
“um-really nothing” you turned around to seonho still in his leather jacket
“uh, then (Y/N), why are you holding that?”
you dropped the plush on the ground
“holding what?”
seonho just looked at the floor, not responding
and naturally..
you took the opportunity to slap him
“why were you acting like that the entire day? why with the jacket, dude??”
and he looked up at you with honest eyes and quietly said “for you”
that’s when your entire world started crashing down
“..for...me.?”
“i thought that if i acted cool you’d like me better, I guess that didn’t work though..” his eyes still tracing an outline of the floor
“you acted cool, just so i would notice you more?”
“i guess.”
and naturally...
you took that opportunity to kiss him
and his eyes grew wide and he just hugs you like you usually would and it was all just so damn perfect
you pulled away and was all like “seonho, honey, I love you but can we get you into that cardigan instead of this stupid jacket”
and he just jeered at you with “I love you too (Y/N) dearie”
that’s how you went from making out with seonho in a leather jacket to cuddling on his bed with seonho in his oversized white cardigan (which was fckn adorable btw)
man, you would love having a relationship with seonho, anyone would tbh
you even spoon fed him the rice lunch you had packed in your bag
his mom would call your mom to tell you what the hell was happening at her house
you and seonho’s mom fangirling over your relationship with each other
at the next show, you and seonho had a duet with him playing the piano and you singing
he got you a matching leather jacket and you were like “ew no,” but after he saw your reaction he made puppy eyes and said “but couple’s outfits” and you just said “i’m sold, just for gags though, seonho”
a happy seonho
a beagle seonho
you match each other so perfectly bc if soulmates were real, and they are, you found your match
one time you were helping seonho catch up on homework in an empty classroom after school and you got curious
“hey, seonho, what was that chick plush doing on top of your bookcase. it looks similar to the one i gave you”
he blushed and shyly said, “i was going to give it to you for your birthday..”
and you just kiss him
and when you pull away you say: “I can’t believe they would call a baby chick chic..”
ps i realized how bad i was at summaries mianhae

Emma Swan just wants to write the follow-up to her bestselling debut novel, that’s all. But when she gets off to a rough start with her new editor, Killian Jones, she knows it’s not going according to plan. Then, an unexpected figure from Emma’s past reappears and life begins to mirror the crime thriller she’s penning. Suspicion and secrets abound–but love might too. A writer/editor AU with a thriller twist.
Rated E. Includes sexual content, kidnapping, some gore, and minor character death–not to mention salty language! On Ao3 here.

Chapter 10
Emma confronts growing suspicions that Regina is hurting Henry. Killian thinks she might wrong and overreacting. When she doesn't handle his reaction well, she runs into Cleo, who has more news to share.
Emma
“Henry? Are you okay?” Emma asked, worried at how quiet the phone had gone.
They had talked three or four times in the past couple of weeks, about every imaginable topic they could--school, their respective interests, tentative things they wanted to do if they had a chance to see each other again. Emma got the impression Regina wasn’t thrilled, but she was just happy to have the opportunity to chat with her son.
The silence continued a few more moments before Henry finally said, “Yeah.”
“What’s wrong?”
He sighed. “Nothing, really. I just feel...weird.”
Emma’s brow furrowed and she paused, trying to decide how to get him to tell her more. “What kind of weird? Are you sick?”
“Cool it, okay?” Emma could practically hear his eyeroll. “I feel fine like that. But you know how I told you when we first met that I feel like somebody’s watching me? I feel like that, but more now.”
She bit her lip. “Is there a reason you think that?” She didn’t want him to be right, but she also really didn’t want him to be wrong either. Being right would be awful, and scary, and she didn’t know what they could do, or how she could protect him.
But if he was wrong, she worried Henry would be upset with her, would think she didn’t believe in him and trust him. Worse, Henry might decide he couldn’t trust her and would push her away. She couldn’t abide that.
“It’s mostly a feeling, but a couple of times I’ve seen the same person waiting outside my school. He never picks up a kid, and he is always gone when I turn to look back,” he said, his voice carefully neutral.
That was worrying, and he didn’t sound completely crazy. It bore looking into, even if there were plenty of explanations for the behavior he was describing.
“That makes sense,” Emma reassured him, “but is there a reason you think they’re watching you?”
“I mean, it makes sense, right? Between Mom’s job and you being famous? And sometimes I think I see them other places too.”
“Oh.” She couldn’t argue with that--she was well-known, even if she loved her privacy, and Regina was pretty damn well-off. Of course, it could be someone watching another kid--acrimonious custody battles were definitely a thing, she’d learned during her stint as a bail bondsperson. Not that it made this any better. “Hmm. Have you talked to Regina about this?”
Henry gave another long pause. “I did once. She told me I was probably imagining things.”
That was worrying.
“Yeah,” Henry said. She couldn’t tell much from his tone, but he seemed to be fishing for some kind of response from her.
If only she knew what that response should be.
“What does this person look like?”
“Well, I think it’s a man. They seem fairly tall, and they always wear a hat. They’re white? And not all that noticeable.”
“Hmm,” Emma muttered.
&&&
"Hey, can we talk?" Emma asked, stepping through the open door of Regina’s large, corner office, the nicest in the building, without waiting for an answer. The floor-to-ceiling windows let in plenty of natural light, which shone warmly on the ornate ash furniture. The room was decorated in whites, greys, and blacks with hints of red throughout, managing to make it look inviting and imposing at the same time. Emma was impressed all over again, even if it was her second time in the office.
Regina looked up from her computer, seemingly unperturbed at Emma’s unannounced intrusion. She was as poised as ever, clad in black and cobalt, not a single hair astray. "Do I have much of a choice? You're here, and you're talking, so...by all means, continue with this undoubtedly deeply important interruption."
Emma clenched her fists, willing herself not to respond to her baiting. "I'm here to talk about something that should interest you. Or someone, rather. Henry."
Taking her hands away from the keyboard and swiveling in her chair to face Emma directly, Regina leaned back in her chair. "Oh?"
"When I was on the phone with him last night, he mentioned something’s been bothering him. He feels like someone is watching him," she said, settling into the uncomfortable visitor's chair across the desk from Regina.
"A lot of people are watching him, Miss Swan. I'm in the running for mayor of the town, and I'm quite well-known. I'm a prominent member of the community, and Henry thus has a correspondingly large number of eyes on him."
"That's not what I meant, and you know it." Emma gritted her teeth.
"No, I don't know what you mean."
Crossing her arms over her chest, Emma continued, "Then let me explain it. Henry feels like someone is watching him. In a hostile, spying-on-him, following-him-home-from-school kind of way."
Regina's lips tightened. "He brought this up to me a few weeks ago."
"I know. He said you brushed him off, telling him you thought he was imagining things."
Regina flipped her hair back over her shoulder. "And maybe that was a poor choice of words and a childish oversimplification on his part. Because he's a child, Ms. Swan. He sometimes sees things that aren't there, and children his age tend to think, on some level, that the world revolves around them. Something you might know if you had ever actually raised a child before."
Her smug tone had Emma's jaw clenching, her teeth grinding. Don't punch your boss, don't punch your boss, Emma silently repeated to herself. Taking a deep breath, she asked, "Did I offend you in some way? I can't think of any reason for you to be so hostile to me. We've made each other a ton of money, and I'm the person who gave birth to your son. I happen to think you've done a decent enough job raising him since he's a pretty polite, interesting kid. I just thought you’d want to hear about the concerning thing Henry told me."
Regina sat back in her chair, her shoulders relaxing as she thawed a little at the positive mention of Henry and her own hand in raising him. "I'm not offended. I have no reason to be offended."
"So it doesn't bother you at all that Henry sought me out?"
It was Regina's turn to clench her jaw. "I'm not thrilled about the manner in which he did so. I would have wholly supported him looking for his birth mother--you--had we done so together, had he not done it behind my back."
"Is there a reason he might have felt it necessary to do that, Ms. Mills?"
Regina narrowed her eyes at Emma’s change from her first name. "I don't like what you're implying."
Emma couldn't resist the taunt, her pride still smarting from Regina’s earlier words. "Oh, I'm not implying anything. I'm saying that I think there's a reason Henry didn't tell you," she said cockily, a smirk tugging at one corner of her mouth.
"Get out," Regina said coldly. Her volume was controlled, but there was no mistaking the fury in her voice. She stayed in her chair, gripping the corner of her desk tightly. "Get out of my office right now."
Emma stood leisurely, exiting the office without looking back.

“Jacob glanced back over his shoulder, hurrying through the alley. He prayed he could outpace the man following him, that maybe this time his foster parents and Raisa would believe him,” Killian read aloud from her draft on his screen. “But god, what if it was his foster mother? What if she were the one actually responsible for all of this chaos?”
He was sitting next to her on one of the stools at the kitchen island, pushing up the reading glasses that had fallen down his nose. They were working on her latest chapter and polishing off Chinese takeout while they did so. Emma’s heart clenched at the pleasant domesticity of it.
“I’ll never get over how weird it is to hear someone reading the words I wrote,” she said, taking a huge bite of her mapo tofu.
He smiled at her. “I can’t imagine that. Didn’t you read a good deal of it yourself at signings and readings with Bonds of the Past?”
“Sure, but that was just me reading it? Hearing someone else? That’s incredibly strange.”
“It can’t be that odd, especially in my melodious, accented voice,” he said, winking at her.
Emma rolled her eyes, biting back a smile. “You’re ridiculous.”
“You like it Swan, admit it,” Killian teased, his emphasis on each of the “t” sounds getting her hotter than any elocution had the right to.
“I might,” she said, staring at the way his tongue waggled at the corner of his mouth. Seriously, it was unfair.
He took a long drink of his watered down old fashioned, the ice having long since melted. “Then I shouldn’t have to tell you that it’s probably mutual.”
Her face reddened, and she bit her lip. “Then it won’t be too forward of me to ask you to stay over tonight?”
The warmth in his eyes turned hotter, his eyes darkening. He cleared his throat and replied gruffly, “I’d be honored to.”
“Honored? What are you, three hundred?”
“What I am is a gentleman,” he said, waggling an eyebrow at her before he sighed and looked back at the document on his screen. “A gentleman who is probably going to regret saying this, but we should finish looking over this chapter.”
Emma grimaced but nodded. “Work first, play later? Fine, fine, be responsible like that.” She looked wistfully at the page count, realizing they were only halfway through the chapter.
She really wanted to take him to bed. They’d been dating for about a month and a half, and Emma couldn’t remember the last time she’d felt this hard up. She definitely hadn’t waited this long since she was a teenager, and she half-regretted suggesting they take it slow.
It had been going slowly, all right. Too slowly. Honestly, she was shocked she hadn’t jumped him when he’d come in the door earlier, looking adorably earnest and unbearably attractive in his black jeans and black and muted purple floral button-up.
Killian took off his glasses and scratched behind his ear. “I’m probably going to hate myself for this later, but you might not want to extend that invitation once I say this.”
“Oh god, editorial bullshit I’m not going to like.” Her face remained impassive and her voice light, but her shoulders tightened at his words.
“Unfortunately.”
She sighed. “Well, let’s hear it, then. Let’s get this over with.”
He hesitated. “I…I don’t think you’ve really established a good motive for the foster parents’ culpability with Jacob. Why would they do it when they’re already acting as his guardians? It just seems unlikely to me.”
Okay, that’s annoying, she thought, trying to bring back the calm she’d felt a couple minutes before. “You don’t think I’ve established how shady they are?”
“You’ve talked about them being shady, but haven’t given much evidence or textual support for it beyond it being a feeling Jacob has,” Killian said, sounding apologetic. He was clearly feeling the pain of the tentative balance of their professional and personal relationships, and she might have felt badly, if he weren’t completely wrong. “But they are guilty of it. Can’t you just wait and see how it plays out over the next couple of chapters?”
He leaned back in his chair. “I’m just trying to make your book as good as it can be. I do have faith in your ability to get the reader there, just…this is the process.”
Emma felt a rush of irritation surge through her. “It might be the process, but I’m pretty damn sure it’s obvious they’re shitty parents. I would think you of all people would understand the need to trust the protagonist. Just because he’s a kid doesn’t mean the adults around him shouldn’t believe him. Or that the reader won’t.”
He paused, seeming to consider his words carefully. “Are you sure this is about the chapter? I’m starting to think this might be about something else, something closer to home.”
At that, she deflated, her burgeoning rage dissipating. Averting her eyes, she twiddled her chopsticks. After a few moments, she finally nodded. "I--well, there might be some stuff going on with Henry."
"What kind of stuff?" He reached out and took her hand, and her heart clenched.
"The kind of thing where he thinks someone is following him and has decent reasons to think so. But Regina doesn't believe him, and she blew me off when I tried to bring it up with her."
"Ah."
Chancing a peek at Killian, she saw he was avoiding her gaze. "What does 'ah' mean?"
He bit his lip before answering. "Keeping in mind that I don't know all the particulars and haven't had a good deal of time to think about it…I can think of several reasons that might be. And don't you think that--and this is me inferring from what I read from your chapter--that suspecting Regina of some kind of involvement in this is rather ludicrous? You might be overreacting."
She saw red. "Ludicrous?! Overreacting?!"
He didn't seem to notice, or at least acknowledge, her increased agitation. "Well, as I mentioned, why? Why would she do such a thing, Swan?"
"Oh, gee, maybe it could have something to do with my sudden appearance in Henry's life. If he was really happy with her, do you think he would have sought me out?" Emma bit out, unable to keep the sarcasm from her tone.
"Don't you think that's a bit…self-serving, love? I can think of plenty of reasons Henry might have sought you out even if he was 100% thrilled with his relationship with Regina. After all, you seem happy now, but wouldn't you like to at least know your parents?" Killian kept his tone even as he said this, but all it did was serve to further infuriate Emma.
"You were right, I don't want to hear this. And I don't want you to stay over tonight."
He looked at her, brow furrowed in worry. "Do you…are we okay?"
For the second time that night, she slumped back in her chair. "I…I think we will be. I'm just really fucking furious right now and don't want to look at you."
"You want me to leave."
"That's about the size of it."
Killian put his glasses away and closed his laptop, placing it into his messenger bag. He stood slowly and went over to where she was still seated, leaned over and pressed a lingering kiss to her forehead. "Very well, Emma. You know where to find me."
She sighed. "Yeah. I'll call you tomorrow?" Suddenly sounding unsure, she reached for his hand and squeezed it before pressing a kiss of her own to it.
"I'd love that," he said, smiling sadly as he walked to the door.
But Emma didn't respond. Lost in thought, she didn't acknowledge his departure.
&&&
Emma slowly dragged herself out of bed the next morning. She hadn’t slept well and now had a crick in her neck, the product of having spent most of the night tossing and turning.
And she was embarrassed. She had, in fact, overreacted the previous night. Slightly. As far as she was concerned, Killian was still mostly wrong, but he’d brought up the topic in as diplomatic and tactful way as he could. Like a reasonable adult in a grown-ass relationship…something she just wasn’t used to.
Once she fortified herself with caffeine--coffee, she didn’t deserve hot chocolate--and made herself presentable, she would go to Killian, and they could talk it over. She’d heard a rumor once that that’s what adults did when they disagreed with someone they cared about, and she was willing to give it a shot.
She stepped into the bathroom and grimaced at the reflection in the mirror of her snarled, disheveled hair and blotchy face. (So she might have cried a little after Killian left, what of it?) Okay, so maybe she’d have to push back the timeframe for the day a little, the whole “making herself presentable” portion was going to take longer than she’d like.
Emma was going to need breakfast. And, she could admit to herself, moral support. She brushed her teeth and took a quick shower, throwing on a simple outfit that was comfortable, reassuring, and still cute. The flowing material of the tunic was soft, and the leggings tucked into the boots provided that edge of familiarity she needed for what was sure to be a trying day.
Eggs, bacon, and humble pie were on the menu.
&&&
She slid into her favorite booth, the smell of coffee, grease, and breakfast food in general making her feel at home and soothing her anxiety. Granny’s may not be fancy, but it was as unmistakably her as a place could get.
That sense of well-being deepened when a small whirlwind moved across the diner and into the seat across from her with astonishing speed. The expensive perfume she wore was at odds with the casual environment, and the heels too high and the outfit a tad too tailored, but Belle’s presence was always a welcome one in Emma’s book.
The artfully arranged curls framed a small, delicately beautiful face, and her blue eyes peered at Emma with concern.
God, she wasn’t going to cry just from Belle giving her that caring, motherly look. She wasn’t.
“Ruby will be out in just a second. She had to check on some things with the dairy supplier,” Belle said, fiddling with the wedding ring that matched the one on Ruby’s hand. “But how are you?”
Despite her earlier admonition, Emma’s eyes welled with tears. “I’m fine.”
The only response she got was a doubtful glance and a raised eyebrow that challenged her to continue.
“Okay, maybe I’m not fine,” she admitted.
Ruby arrived then and silently poured three full mugs of coffee. “You’re obviously not fine, Emma. You’d never text me before ten in the morning if you were.”
Emma looked up at her blearily. “Point made,” she said, and Belle and Ruby exchanged a look.
“What can I get you, sweetie?” Ruby asked. “I could even do a grilled cheese if that'll help.”
“No, but thank you. Maybe some waffles? And some advice and a hug?”
“We can do that.”
In a startlingly short period of time, she was polishing off her plate of waffles. Ruby sat next to her, arm draped over her shoulders, while Belle sat across from them, listening intently as Emma filled them in on the previous day’s happenings.
“It sounds like you have a lot on your plate. Metaphorically, that is,” Belle commiserated.
Emma sighed. “Yeah. I just…did I mess things up with Killian? Am I totally off base with the whole Henry and Regina situation?”
Ruby tightened her grip on her. “No, I don’t think so. From what you said, Killian seemed fine last night. Sad, but okay with you needing a little space. And with Regina and Henry…you need to follow your instincts. You’ve always had good ones. Remember that doctor I went out with a couple times? You totally called it with how weird he turned out to be.”
“Rubes, no one could have guessed that he would be into experimenting on dead bodies.”
Belle turned to her wife, intrigued. Ruby just shrugged. “Sure, but not even Granny tried to stop me from dating him.”
“That’s because every time she told you not to do something, you just…intensified the thing,” Emma said.
“Still, points to you. Just take what you can get, Emma.”
“I will. For starters, another hug?”
Both Ruby and Belle obliged, embracing her tightly and packing her a large takeaway bag full of a pie Ruby had made for the diner along with cookies Belle had made that morning.
Heart and arms fuller, she made her way home. Arriving at her apartment she was startled to see a familiar face outside her door--Cleo.
&&&
Emma stared at Cleo, confused. She had rarely--if ever--seen her outside of work or work-related events, and she was a little puzzled to find her outside of her apartment. For starters, how did she even know where she lived?
Belatedly and somewhat superfluously, she realized that Cleo had access to her HR files, which was probably how she learned her address. But that still didn't answer why she was here.
Cleo met her eyes wordlessly, looking more torn and indecisive than Emma had ever seen her. Her hair wasn't in its usual orderly, business-like ponytail, and she wasn't wearing her usual carefully tailored leather or wool. She was wearing jeans and a baggy sweatshirt, her hair was wild and wavy, and she looked as exhausted as Emma felt.
Emma's stomach clenched, sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach. Finally, she spoke, stepping towards her front door. "Uh, hi, Cleo. What's up…on a Saturday? Outside my apartment?"
Cleo grimaced. "We need to talk. Can we go inside?"
"Yikes, that phrase doesn't usually lead to good things," Emma said, motioning her inside and leading her to the couch. She sat at one end and Cleo at the other, neither looking at the other.
"I wish I could say this would be an exception, but I can't imagine this conversation will be fun. Or easy."
Emma tilted her head, considering. "Okay, well, would you like some coffee first? Or tea? I can get you a slice of pie, too."
"That…sounds good."
Emma carefully cut the pie while the coffee brewed, the gurgling of the percolator the only sound in the apartment. As soon as it was prepared, Emma brought out their mugs and pie and rejoined Cleo on the couch.
She cleared her throat, unsure of how to begin. "So..."
"August has been spying on you," Cleo blurted out.
"What?" Whatever she'd been expecting, that hadn't been it. She put down her mug, splashing some of the coffee on herself. She winced, but made no motion to get anything to clean it off her top.
"He's been digging for information on you, colluding with at least one other person. For reasons I can't entirely figure out."
"The fuck? What? Spying on me? With another person? And uh, how do you know this?" She stared at Cleo, her mouth gaping open.
Cleo's mouth twisted. "August has been giving all this information he's gotten about you to a woman. I'm not entirely sure who. I’ve heard them on the phone, her voice sounds familiar, but..."
"Shit."
"Yeah."
Emma sat there, stupefied. She didn't get it. August had brought her into the publishing house, making it possible for her to not have an agent. He'd essentially acted as one for her, providing a mutually beneficial professional relationship that been good for both of them. She would have probably answered any relevant questions he might have. So what the hell was he asking?
"I don't know what to say."
"I'm sorry, Emma. I didn't want to burst in on your Saturday, but I thought you needed to know. And I'm afraid that's not the worst of it," Cleo said, looking truly apologetic.
"What could be worse than that?"
"The person August was using to get a lot of that information, at least for a while, was Killian."
Fuck.
Emma wasn't sure how to process the information Cleo had just given her. She had sat motionless while Cleo told her how she'd gotten the information and what had tipped her off that something might be wrong with the entire scenario. It had seemed pretty clear.
She just didn't get why.
"Jones seems to have been involved initially because August expedited his immigration to the US. He could have gotten it done otherwise, but he seemed to want to get out of England fast, and August somehow made that possible," Cleo explained.
"How? I wouldn’t have thought August had much pull with any sort of governmental organization. He's good at marketing and making connections, but Regina is the one at Mills & Booth with the ties to deep pockets and the power players."
Cleo looked at her sympathetically, taking in the lost and confused expression on Emma's face. "Well, I can postulate he's made some connections that might help. And the money seems to have come from his silent--or rather, unseen--partner."
Emma sighed. "Who might actually be Regina."
"It could be, yes, but I don't know for sure," said Cleo.
"Jesus. Just...why? Wouldn't it have been easier to just ask me stuff?"
"Would you have told him? You're not the most forthcoming, and I'll be honest, I don't know whether August's motive is personal or professional. All I know is that he asked Jones for as much information as he could get about you, from personal stuff to what you were working on with your novel."
Swallowing the lump in her throat, Emma chewed on her thumbnail while she considered everything Cleo told her. "So Killian told him everything? Everything I've been telling him for the last few months?"
"I'm not sure," Cleo replied carefully. "What I can tell you is that Killian seems to have stopped providing any information about a month or so ago. At that point, he functionally ceased communication with August beyond the usual professional progress updates you'd expect." She hesitated before continuing. "I'm sorry. I know you two were getting closer."
"We've been dating for the last month and a half, basically," she said bluntly.
Cleo winced. "That…I don't really know how to say much beyond 'I’m sorry', but I can't help but think you'd want more of an explanation from Killian than from me."
"Yeah," Emma said, pushing aside her growing pain and swelling rage, "I do want to confront Killian. But what about August? Do I ask him? Do I tell him? Hell, can I sue him?"
Averting her eyes, Cleo shook her head. "I'd wait until I knew more, if I were you. I have to say that I might not have acquired all of my information through the most straightforward or, uh, legal methods."
Emma let out a startled laugh. "I never would have guessed, Cleo."
She smiled sadly. "There's a lot you don't know about me."
"I guess there's a lot all of us don't show each other," Emma mused, a storm raging inside her as she finally realized how much Killian had hidden from her.

So I've got a couple of thoughts. I love the platonic bonds that Wish Hook developed with Regina and Rumple. It's very clear that Regna and Rumple look at this version of Hook as family, that's why they're looking out for him and watching out for him. I am wondering though wy Regina and Zelena hate each other. A part of me thinks this goes hand in hand with Regina's LI whom is debuting in 7x13 I believe. I feel like it's been done but hey they've rehashed tons of things this season.
Oh yeah. Super platonic. He’s practically Regina’s adopted brother these days. Etc etc.
I’m going to go ahead and guess that the reason why Regina and Zelena hate each other is the same reason why Hook felt “drawn” to Eloise and wanted to find her: the curse. There are certain things you don’t want when you cast a curse on these people, and the Mills sisters on the same side is a big one. Captain Hook on your bad side is another.

My Weekend at Once Con (Part 2)
Hello again and welcome back to my recap of my weekend at the Once Upon a Time Convention in Whippany, New Jersey from October 20-22, 2017!
Not caught up but want to be on my adventure so far? Click right here!
()()()()()()()()()()()()() Saturday
()()()()()()()()()()()()() I woke up at seven once again, and once again, I was out the door relatively early, but this time, I took my time preparing for the day. That's because today was my Duo Photo Opp with Jen and Colin, and I wasn't about to do this without looking my absolute best! I dressed in a Once Upon a Time tank top, my Once-themed cardigan, a pair of black slacks, and sneakers. For me, at least, that's pretty good as far as outfits go.
I arrived at the hotel about an hour before registration opened. Dani was there too, waiting to register, so we waited together, chatting it up with a family who was also just attending for the day as we did. I feel bad. Dani, who had been waiting patiently on a sofa right next to the line, got caught back, and then went back even further once the Gold passes started being registered. At some point, I lost her in the crowd. That said, I knew she'd be fine. She's a strong and independent woman, and with a certain Meet and Greet soon to be happening, I knew she had far more important things to think about. As for me, I started to head towards the theatre.
Today, after all, was also the Colin/Jen Gold Package Exclusive Panel, and I wasn't about to miss that for the world.
I went in there with a plan, one I somewhat regret in hindsight. Given how Colin's photo opp was the first thing to sell out, I figured I would ask my Colin question now because he was more likely to fill up in the Q&A line, and then ask Jen's at her individual panel. If I had another go at it, I probably would've asked something that they could both answer, but hey, I still got a question with Colin (And later a second one at his individual panel, but I'll tackle that later!) So, here went my question: "One of my all time favorite dynamics on the show is the rivalry between Killian and Rumple. The chemistry between you and Robert Carlyle is fantastic! How do you two work together to create such a stunning on-screen feud? Do you work on your scenes together or do you both plan independently before just going at each other on camera?"
Now, keep in mind that the wording was a little different than that, but not by much. Perhaps my words didn't come across in the way that I intended, but Colin didn't really answer my question, focusing more on their current dynamic rather than the one from Season 2-6. Thankfully, he did talk about working with Robert Carlyle in general, so it was far from a waste of a question.
Jen and Colin have a fantastic rapport, and it was so nice to see it once again and live. Their dynamic is very casual, and speaks to their great friendship. As expected, the two were swarmed with baby questions, questions about their happy ending, and basically every adorable Captain Swan question, both on and off camera, under the sun. And man, was it fun! Basically all of their responses were met with boisterous cheers and applause (I did quite a fair amount of whooping, myself).
After the Jen/Colin Panel was a quick break, followed by the "Wild Crew" panel. This was a Q&A with Lee Arenberg, Chris Gauthier, Gil McKinney, and Michael Coleman. These guys work well off each other and you can feel the time they've spent together in every word exchanged between them. I did get to ask a question, and this time I decided to kill two birds with one stone and ask a question directed towards the entire panel. My question was simple: "How do you define True Love?" Do you feel those butterflies in your stomach? Yeah, that's what everyone else was feeling too. It made me so happy to hear the "Awww's" that fluttered around the room, both after the question was asked and as each of the men answered. Chris' response, regarding how he and his wife fell in love and are now more in love than they were before was probably my favorite of the four, though every story was heartwarming as hell.
After the Wild Crew had howled away, we got Karen David. I was a big Galavant fan, so I was looking forward to this! My question was pretty simple: "What is the difference in preparing for a comedic role like Galavant as opposed to a dramatic one like Once?" Karen's response was nuanced, detailing the funny moments involved in Once and the more dramatic parts of Galavant as well as touching upon the more regularly picked up parts of the genre.
There was one other question that I wanted to highlight. It was given by a young woman who was actually lucky and skilled enough to both win one of the trivia segments and ask questions at every single panel, all the while wearing a stunning pride flag on her back. She asked Karen about her experiences as the first Indian woman to be featured on Once Upon a Time. Karen's answer was once again just fantastic! She went into the importance of diversity in the media, and her excitement in bringing this role to life. This fandom has a of problems, but when questions are asked about representation in the show, I find that we can be more insightful than we first appear to be. I hope in the future, we ask ourselves continuously if we are doing enough to present a more accurate and beautifully colorful picture of the equally colorful world we live in.
So, there was now a break in the schedule for the cosplay contest. I sadly didn't end up going to because I wanted to talk to Dani about her Meet and Greet with Jen. That said, I wasn't completely oblivious of the cosplays, so I'd like to take a brief moment to highlight some of the coolest cosplays there. First, one person who I had met on the Facebook group that I mentioned in Part 1, Kelly, was dressed as a different version of Regina everyday, and ever single one of them was more phenomenal than the last. ABC, hire this woman! Second, there was this amazing Swan Costume with a crown on it, very clearly going for a literal interpretation of Swan Queen (Lana even called her as much when she asked a question at her panel on Sunday), and that was so freakin' cool! I heard she won a prize in the contest, and that makes me pretty happy! I talked to her later on in the weekend and she said she worked for months on the costume! Third, there was one woman who wore a Belle cosplay on Saturday and an Evil Queen costume on Sunday, and damn, they were both so pretty! Fourth, there were not one, but two exceptional Captain Swan couple's costumes. Like, wow! Finally, there's Opal, who went everyday as Maleficent. Her cosplays were just wonderful! Honestly, her whole crew was en pointe! One of them had up until the night before the debut been working on a rider Regina outfit, and it came out so well and the other was wearing a totally awesome Maleficent costume as well!
I can go on with this list, stating every Elsa, Zelena, Emma, etc. that I saw that weekend, but for brevity and faulty memory, I'll leave it there. Just know...there's a lot of them, and they're all fabulous!
Later, there was an auction. Auction...how that word would come to haunt me.
But that will have to wait for now.
Anyway, there may have been a break in the panels, but it was anything but for me. My photo opp was coming, and it was coming fast. I asked everyone about if they think I looked good. Dani had coached me through the procedure, and I anxiously waited for my number to be called. After some time, it was, and I got into line, trying to figure out how I'd make a single flash of an instant perfect. It was anxiety-inducing waiting on that line, but the photo happened, and it happened fast. Colin said something to me, and readers, I'm so sorry, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was. I remember my foot brushing against his leg, smiling, and then...it was done. Now all I could do was wait for the photo to come out. Fears and doubts settled into the recesses of my mind as I proceeded on with the day.
But enough about that! I know what you're here for! You want to hear about the panels, and now it's time for the one, the only, Colin O' Donoghue!
As I said before, I got another chance to ask Colin a question. This time, I went with something a bit more comedic in nature. "What kind of pet would Hook want? Would he prefer a scurvy dog or would his pet respond more to 'Polly want a cracker?'" His response? His dog Buckley, of course! I couldn't help but go "D'aww" at that answer and neither could the rest of the audience for that matter.
I have two more highlights to point out, and forgive the bias, but both of them come from friends. The first was Dani's. She asked Colin if a scene from Season 3, Dark Hollow was intentional. In the scene, Emma takes a sword out with Hook walking behind her as they walk, and almost strikes Hook in the face without realizing it. Colin said that it was unintentional, which really makes that scene funny to watch in hindsight. The second question came from my carpool buddy, Cassie. It was about the experiences he went through and things he learned while filming The Rite. Colin discussed how he studied exorcisms and even saw some being performed. I'm pretty sure Colin exorcises the fans' souls every time he smoulders! XD
The rest of Colin's panel proceeded as one would expect. Colin is a unique mix of shy and hysterical. He is both approachable and snarky, and at the same time rambling and apologetic. He's down-to-earth and confident, and you never know just which side of him you're going to see next. You can tell how excited he is about the new season, and especially now that we have some of the new season's episodes to go off of, it's pretty easy to get wrapped up in that excitement with him.
Who wants to hear about Jen? I do!!!! Today we got redhead Jen, fresh out of a film festival! And damn, does she rock the new look! So, this panel I got completely locked out of as far as asking questions goes. It was definitely saddening, though I really did love each and every question asked during it. I think I was sadder for Dani. She hadn't had the chance to ask a question to Jen during her Meet and Greet and now, that our fellow con goers had grown wise to the strategy of lining up early, her question line became flooded. It was an impossible block and about halfway though, we both realized we weren't going to get anywhere with it. Dani sat down and while I held out a little longer, I eventually decided to do the same. Rightly so. One thing I really tried to do during this con was not to view it through a screen. My recordings are jagged and audibly terrible, but seeing everyone live, and not just through the camera of my iPhone was well worth it.
Jen's genuineness (Or should I say, JEN-uineness!) shines in everything she says. She answers professionally, but will be vulnerable when she either doesn't know how to answer or the question deems showing that side of herself. She discussed everything from Emma's character and growth over the course of the seasons to her new directing projects to insight into the world of media! One thing I found especially funny and has been highlighted in photo and gifsets a hundred and one times by now was when Jen commented on a question Colin answered during his panel about who would be the fun parent and who would be the strict parent between Hook and Emma. Colin was very much on the side of Emma being the stricter parent, but Jen seems to believe that Hook would change his tune pretty quickly if they were to have a daughter. Personally, I think Hook would be more easygoing either way! XD My favorite question from the set was one about Jen's thoughts on how Swan Queen had brought all of these different relationships together, inspired creative works, inspired coming outs, and even inspired proposals. For one, the question was immaculately worded. It was polite, but so strong in its conviction. It prioritized comfort for all involved but was undeniably something that both everyone could enjoy and at the same time was something special to the Swan Queen and LGBTQ+ communities. I had the pleasure of speaking with the young woman who asked the question Sunday evening, and if you are somehow reading this, you are fantastic and I'd love to follow you or PM you on Tumblr sometime! Also, it seems like Jen is going to be releasing a project having something to do with the LGBTQ+ community in the near future! I can't wait to see it and I don't think I'm alone!
This was the last panel of the day. Afterwards were autographs, which again, I'm going to save my thoughts on for the ending of this overview. That said, I'll hint that halfway through this autograph session, I began a bit of a tradition that would carry through until the end of the weekend.
Now, I've got one last event to comment on, and that's the Once Upon a Concert!
This was fantastic! Picture this: Gil, Lee, Chris, Karen, Michael, and Beverly putting on a concert with every genre under the sun! Here are some fast highlights:
1. Happy hitting on Granny through a musical number, sung entirely in character (I dub the ship Hanny)
2. Karen trying to sing "Love is Strange," but continuously forgetting the lyrics! At one point, a fan brought over her phone so she could look at the lyrics
3. Michael riffing on the show and fandom while singing a song
4. Gil and Karen fumbling their way through "A Whole New World" and laughing the entire time
5. Karen singing Katy Peri's "Roar," going into the audience, and actually giving the mic to Dani and myself at one point so we could sing along
6. Beverly and Karen wearing fabulously sparkly dresses and singing "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"
There were loads of songs and fun performances all around, but I'm going to end off here. The concert went on until about 11:30, and following its conclusion, I shared a goodbye with Dani and went back to the hotel where I went directly to sleep.
Tomorrow, after all, was going to the final and most thrilling part of the adventure yet!

Below-freezing temperatures and bulky outerwear can make winter...
Tumblr media

The 300 Week 45: Almost There… Almost There…
It’ll occur, guys, it is really going to occur!
Hey there, howlers, and welcome again to The 300, my big-eyed, big-eared, sharp-toothed try and see 300 motion pictures in theaters in 2018. I’ll be watching new releases, classics, hidden gems, and pageant movies to expertise the large world of cinema in all its varieties. With a lot moviegoing selection, I hope there’s one thing on this picnic basket so that you can get pleasure from.
As all the time, there are three guidelines for The 300:
The film have to be a minimum of 40 minutes lengthy, assembly the Academy of Movement Image Arts and Sciences’ definition of a characteristic movie.
I need to watch the film at a movie show, screening room, or outside screening venue.
Whereas I can watch motion pictures I’ve seen earlier than 2018, I can’t depend repeated viewings of the identical movie in 2018 a number of occasions.
A busy week as I attempt to deliver The 300 on dwelling. I’ve solely acquired 5 motion pictures left, and I do know what they’re. Oddly, that is one other week with projection points, with a 35mm print (of Gleaming the Dice, for those who can consider it) requiring a couple of minutes to repair, and a 16mm print (of A Midsummer Evening’s Dream) getting warped and warbly within the remaining minutes of the film. Meaning extra projection and print issues within the final 5 weeks than I’ve skilled your complete remainder of the 12 months. It’s odd how that occurs. Possibly it is a signal from the film gods that this was a mistake. On that time, I want to stay agnostic.
It was an attention-grabbing week of moviegoing as I caught up with a couple of extra October releases I missed, and I acquired to fill some large holes in film nerd data. I’ve acquired 9 motion pictures to put in writing up this week, and since I’m a little bit low on time, my ideas could also be comparatively transient. Seeing 295 motion pictures takes up loads of hours. I gives you a minutes depend subsequent week.
Rely them down in your fingers, people. We’re nearly there.
And so, onward.
287 of 300: Can You Ever Forgive Me? (2018)
Director: Marielle Heller Starring: Melissa McCarthy, Richard E. Grant, Dolly Wells Nation: USA Seen at The Landmark at 57 West (New York, NY) Wednesday, November seventh
Can You Ever Forgive Me? is Melissa McCarthy’s finest film, and a terrific show of her potential as a considerate dramatic actress. Her skills often get squandered by subpar materials—as was the case with The Happytime Murders (The 300 Week 34)—relegated to a one-note bumbler/shouter. There are such a lot of layers in Can You Ever Forgive Me? efficiency, which is predicated on a memoir by Lee Israel. McCarthy performs a tragic sack author who resorts to forging literary letters to pay the payments. Like many writers, she finds that crime pays higher than a literary profession.  Lee’s solely buddies within the metropolis are her cat and one other failed author (performed by a superb Richard E. Grant) who hustles and screws his manner by means of New York Metropolis.
One thing in regards to the film felt like a cross between Marvel Boys and Withnail & I; the previous as a result of it’s a narrative about writers performing badly, and the latter due to Grant’s presence and the sheer squalor of all of it. Whereas tidying up Lee’s dwelling, we uncover an enormous assortment of stray cat turds beneath her mattress. That’s Withnail as hell. However there’s such humanity to those lonely characters struggling by means of their lives. There are laughs in Can You Ever Forgive Me?, however they’re muted ones. The contours of Lee’s despair (which seemingly consists of social nervousness dysfunction and some extent of agoraphobia) are so well-rendered and sympathetic. I’m wanting ahead to extra sudden roles like this in McCarthy’s profession.
288 of 300: Wildlife (2018)
Director: Paul Dano Starring: Ed Oxenbould, Carey Mulligan, Jake Gyllenhaal Nation: USA Seen at AMC Empire 25 (New York, NY) Thursday, November eighth
Wildlife is such a handsomely made, well-observed literary adaptation. Primarily based on the Richard Ford novel of the identical identify, the movie follows the dissolution of a post-war marriage as seen by means of the eyes of an adolescent boy. The household lives in Nice Falls, Montana (the identify says all of it in regards to the American Dream), and a wildfire burns uncontrolled simply outdoors city. Its imagery is usually quietly stunning, and serves to showcase the performances. Carey Mulligan’s particularly good as a housewife who’s grown fed up together with her husband’s nonsense. She shifts fairly abruptly by the tip of the primary act: at first a modest homemaker content material to endure by means of domesticity, after which a lady in there thirties who longs for freedom, risk, simply extra. Jake Gyllenhaal, in contrast, appears to stay an archetype of outmoded American masculinity, who takes each slight as an indication of emasculation.
But this good-looking, proficient, well-considered craft is oddly a part of what retains me from absolutely loving Wildlife. The story is fairly acquainted for anybody who’s learn an American novel in regards to the decline of the post-war interval. I did, nonetheless, discover myself entranced by loads of the imagery given an opportunity to breathe on display, like the best way literary writers give area for sentences to unfold; a few of the photographs really feel concurrently watched and skim. If something, it is a stable directorial debut from Paul Dano, and it makes me marvel what he could deal with subsequent.
289 of 300: Gleaming the Dice (1989)
Director: Graeme Clifford Starring: Christian Slater, Steven Bauer, Richard Herd Nation: USA Seen at Roxy Cinema Tribeca (New York, NY) Thursday, November eighth
Gleaming the Dice is such wonderful 80s kitsch. Christian Slater performs a bodacious skater boy whose adopted brother is murdered by Vietnamese gun runners. The cops don’t take our hero critically, so he has to take issues into his personal arms. Skateboard-larity ensues, bro. I’ve seen three skateboarding motion pictures this 12 months, the opposite two being Jonah Hill’s okay Mid90s (The 300 Week 44) and Crystal Moselle’s a lot better Skate Kitchen (The 300 Week 32). Gleaming the Dice is the second better of the bunch, however I do know I’ll watch this schlock once more earlier than the others. What a goofy blast.
I’m reminded of how so many 80s motion pictures about teenagers inexplicably concerned organized crime and violent motion. This is able to in all probability pair effectively with the oddball James Spder/Robert Downey Jr. automobile Tuff Turf. (Look that one up for those who ever needed to listen to Spader sing a romantic ballad.) Take into account the next second from Gleaming the Dice: Tony Hawk triumphantly drives a Pizza Hut supply truck over the crest of a hill, harkening the arrival of a skate crew calvalry. Completely gnarly, proper?
290 of 300: Good Manners (2017) (aka As Boas Maneiras)
Administrators: Marco Dutra and Juliana Rojas Starring: Isabél Zuaa, Marjorie Estiano, Miguel Lobo Nation: Brazil/France/Germany Seen at BAM Rose Cinemas (Brooklyn, NY) Friday, November ninth
Good Manners is a such an engrossing mishmash of genres. It’s a werewolf film a couple of pregnant girl mysteriously stricken with some sort of lyncathropy. She hires a poor black girl from an outlying a part of town as a nanny, which makes the film additionally about class as race. And it will get stranger nonetheless, vacillating from horror to fable to darkish comedy, and even throwing in a couple of musical numbers for good measure. One way or the other administrators Marco Dutra and Juliana Rojas are capable of management the tonal shifts of the movie. Whereas they’re sudden, they really feel a part of a cohesive complete. The film appears like an odd story that might have been penned by Carmen Maria Machado, Karen Russell, or Kelly Hyperlink. Good Manners may even play effectively alongside Agnieszka Smoczynska’s mermaid musical horror movie The Lure.
Watching Good Manners, I by no means certain what was going to occur subsequent, and loved the surprises as they arose. That’s the wonderment of taking acquainted components and rearranging them in an unfamiliar manner. It’s a film that feels such as you’re being instructed a bedtime story however in a dream. Due to that, I used to be by no means bothered by Good Manners’ 135-minute runtime. I don’t wish to say something extra. As I discussed above, the surprises in Good Manners are a part of the enjoyment of this postmodern fairy story.
291 of 300: The Hate U Give (2018)
Director: George Tillman Jr. Starring: Amandla Stenberg, Regina Corridor, Russell Hornsby Nation: USA Seen at AMC Empire 25 (New York, NY) Saturday, November 10th
The Hate U Give is a well timed portrait of the Black Lives Matter motion that additionally presents a primer on privilege, code switching, and what constitutes good allyship. It’s such a well-distilled sequence of observations, and a part of the rationale the film is as shifting as it’s. The story considerations the demise of an unarmed black teen by the hands of a white police officer. Starr (Amandla Stenberg) is the one witness to the killing and a long-time pal of the sufferer, however fears talking out. It might influence her life at her elite non-public faculty, the place she’s the one individual of shade; it could influence her life at dwelling given her household’s place in the neighborhood and her pal’s ties to an area gang.
Stenberg’s extremely good within the movie. As an emotional anchor, she appears perpetually between totally different worlds and totally different features of herself. Like many coming-of-age tales, there’s a battle for self-discovery, and Starr has to seek out who she is each personally and politically. The supporting solid is equally sturdy, significantly Regina Corridor (who’s all the time good) as Starr’s grounded mom, and Russell Hornsby as Starr’s dad working the long-game at redemption/reformation. The Hate U Give is without doubt one of the most earnest movies of the 12 months, and a reminder of the potential in good YA writing. Given the state of police violence in opposition to unarmed black males, the e-book and the movie will hopefully provide some sense of hope and braveness shifting ahead.
292 of 300: A Midsummer Evening’s Dream (1959) (aka Sen noci svatojánské)
Director: Jirí Trnka Nation: Czechoslovakia Seen at The Movie Society of Lincoln Middle (New York, NY) Saturday, November 10th
Jirí Trnka’s A Midsummer Evening’s Dream is pure magic. Watching the film made me really feel like a toddler. This stop-motion animated adaptation of the Shakespeare is such a blinding, charming show of creativeness. The articulated dolls in Trnka’s animated movies really feel extra like puppets the have been lovingly assembled and dropped at life. Whereas there’s some narration, there’s no dialogue, which implies the puppets themselves mutely emote and convey the textual content accompanied by music. It helps for those who’re conversant in A Midsummer Evening’s Dream, however I believe simply admiring the film magic, the colour, the element, and the spectacle of this animated puppet present could also be sufficient to maintain enchantment.
I noticed the English-dubbed 16mm Academy ratio model of the film, although there are a minimum of two different variations that I want to hunt out. The movie was concurrently shot in ultra-wide CinemaScope, which makes the animated movie appear extra like a cinematic stage play. There’s additionally an English-language model of the movie with a full voice solid, together with Richard Burton because the narrator. I ponder what this full voice-cast model is like. Within the model I noticed, the narration turned the Shakespearean textual content into nursery rhyme floor beef, however the poetic imagery made it palatable.
293 of 300: Overlord (2018)
Director: Julius Avery Starring: Jovan Adepo, Wyatt Russell, Mathilde Ollivier Nation: USA Seen at AMC Village 7 (New York, NY) Monday, November 12th
Overlord is okay, however an hour or so after leaving the theater, I discovered myself wishing it was higher. Borrowing components from Wolfenstein, Frankenstein’s Military, and Shock Waves (The 300 Week 33), the film is a couple of small group of American troopers on a mission to take out a Nazi base however uncover a plot to create Nazi tremendous troopers. The scope of the story is saved small, which is to the movie’s benefit, and there’s some stable gore. And but I believe a part of my subject was how the script undermines the competence of our protagonist, Boyce (Jovan Adepo). All through the movie, he winds up doing loads of dumb and questionable issues in service of the plot. At occasions he appears much less like a soldier in WWII and extra like Scooby-Doo. I do know, individuals do dumb issues in horror motion pictures as a result of that could be a widespread trope, however I discover lazy protection of poor writing. Style per se is just not a adequate defend from shoddy character motivations.
I additionally marvel about Boyce’s shifting/inconsistent ethics in the course of the mission. So many film heroes balk on the tidiness of utilitarianism, hoping to avoid wasting the entire good guys with out shedding any buddies or allies. That’s nice, however at a sure level, Boyce needs to guard a Nazi captain from getting roughed up though he deserves it. Just some scenes earlier than, Boyce was able to kill the identical Nazi captain for tried rape; the movie even alludes to this Nazi scum being a serial rapist. Why the sudden mercy for an unrepentant Nazi? As a result of the Nazi must survive as a result of the plot dictates it as a result of horror film. Overlord is a fairly good rental, however the seams are apparent as a result of horror film.
294 of 300: Detour (1945)
Director: Edgar G. Ulmer Starring: Tom Neal, Ann Savage, Claudia Drake Nation: USA Seen at Movie Discussion board (New York, NY) Tuesday, November 13th
Detour is an unsung, movie noir basic that’s lastly acquired a 4K digital restoration. The little-seen movie is lean at only a good 69 minutes, and it was shot low-cost and fast. Detour is splendidly atmospheric, leaning into the shadows and fog of German Expressionism in addition to the snappy disillusionment of pulp writers of the time. (At one level cash is described as a bunch of folded paper coated in germs. Boss.) It’s quintessentially noir from starting to finish. Advised principally in flashback with hard-boiled narration, we learn the way Tom Neal’s hard-luck drifter wound up in his sorry state. Seems his cross nation hitchhike didn’t go as deliberate, with destiny dealing him a sequence of dangerous arms. Although it’s such a low-budget movie, Edgar G. Ulmer provides the film an ingenious visible panache, which heightens the narration and character standpoint. It’s a reminder that budgetary limitations can usually immediate wealthy visible inventiveness.
Along with Ulmer’s fashionable shoestring path, Detour is notable for an unimaginable efficiency by Ann Savage. She’s a demon queen femme fatale who is aware of find out how to grift her manner round. Her introduction into the image is exceptional. Discover her on the highway, then watching her in profile as she sits within the passenger seat, and the look on her eyes when she turns to the digital camera. She could also be driving shotgun, however we all know who’s actually within the driver’s seat.
The restored model of Detour is getting a restricted theatrical run due to Janus Movies, which implies a Criterion Assortment launch might be across the nook. Until it will get into hassle on the highway, in fact.
295 of 300: Hollywood Shuffle (1987)
Director: Robert Townsend Starring: Robert Townsend, Helen Martin, Keenen Ivory Wayans Nation: USA Seen at BAM Rose Cinemas (Brooklyn, NY) Tuesday, November 13th
When you have been to cross the “Bizarre Al” film UHF with In Dwelling Colour, the consequence could be Robert Townsend’s Hollywood Shuffle. Townsend performs Bobby Taylor, an aspiring actor searching for his large break, however the one roles out there for black males are pimps, gangsters, slaves, and butlers. Does he promote out or present some self-respect? With so few choices for actors of shade, Bobby escapes into his personal creativeness, the place popular culture parodies and comedy sketches unfold as satirical commentary. Whereas the film falls prey to the informal homophobia of the 1980s, it’s nonetheless a humorous and by the tip extraordinarily honest examination of the significance of illustration in media. The film is about imagining different roles for individuals of shade—new goals, new aspirations, a greater world—and dismantling the stereotypes perpetuated by the present media panorama.
Watching Hollywood Shuffle this 12 months appears significantly related. At one level of the film there’s dialogue of a black Superman as an aspirational mannequin. In contrast, in a surprisingly heartbreaking scene, we get to see how Bobby’s little brother reacts to the insulting manner black males are depicted within the media. In my head I sense some continuity between Hollywood Shuffle, the Solar Ra Afrofuturism movie House Is the Place (The 300 Week 5), and Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther (The 300 Week 7). These are all movies about black individuals creating a greater future by means of creativeness and artwork. Even Zoot Swimsuit (The 300 Week 11) and Loopy Wealthy Asians (The 300 Week 33) could be introduced into this bigger scope of illustration and why it issues. It’s the stuff goals, and the long run, are made from.
