I need to cleanse my brain after seeing such terrible takes on Arthur
People genuinely think at the core of their being and his that he is just an asshole who doesn't think Merlin is brave
(yet 5 minutes later drops everything because he has a dream or vision or whatever he thinks it was of Merlin and trusts him implicity to change their tactics at Camlann)
Like FOR THE LOVE OF CAMELOT I beg ya not to just get on the arthurs an ass train
YES he can be an ass and a prat but he is so much more so fucking much more than that and he loves Merlin to death (not even talking shipping here)
and if you can't see that and take his snarky or rude or hurtful things as gospel whilst being blind to the fact he was hurt when he said it AND DIDN'T FUCKING MEAN IT then there is no hope for you

Older!Merlin x Younger!Arthur Concept
Ok so here's Older!Merlin with Younger!Arthur like I mentioned in my last post suggesting more of this.
-------
Why was it always a hunting trip? Arthur would never admit to Merlin that he was right, but even he was starting to see the pattern of bad luck that followed them everytime that he wanted to catch some game.
In his defence, it was usually bandits. Bandits were familiar and he could handle them.
This was no bandits.
Why couldn't it have been bandits?
"What is wrong with you?!" The king demands, hitting his manservant on the head, after Merlin scared off what was a perfectly good deer.
"It was a deer! We don't need that much food! Especially not your fat ass!"
"It's muscle! You wouldn't know it because you're  a twig!"
"Better a twig than a dollophead! And I'm not as scrawny as I used to be thank you very much."
"Still look like a boy though, goes with your mental age.".
Logically, Arthur knew Merlin was a man now, he was just two years younger than himself after all. But it was hard to see sometimes, with that boyish grin that warmed his chest in ways that he wouldn't dare examine further, and how he didn't act in a way that his father had taught him a man should act. Anyhow, his father was dead, and what was a deadmans business to tell him how a man should be.
Merlin was all that mattered: smart as a whip, wise, loyal, and the bravest and kindest man he has ever met.
Of course, he was also an idiot, disrespectful, the clumsiest person in the lands and the worst manservant to ever live.
Arthur prefered to express the ladder.
And he would come to regret not having expressed the former to his manservant.
"Says the man who has to be dragged off his bed like a whiny child!"
"Well, Merlin-". Then it happened. A pained noise, that Arthur would rather not ever hear again, came from his friend as he fell to his knees and held his chest.
"What is it!? What's wrong!?" He said as he dropped his crossbow and kneeled in front of him.
"A-Arthur.", and then, because they weren't lucky enough to have been just a muscle spasm, Merlins chest started to glow. And the glow started slowly spreading throughout his body.
Arthur froze, completely lost on what to do.
"Merlin! What's happening!?"
What Merlin cursed? Was there a sorcerer nearby that he hadn't noticed? How had he not noticed anyone?
He looked around for a moment but saw no one to kill or demand answers from, and his attention was back on the glowing.
"Something important.".
Do something!! Anything!!
It wasn't like Arthur to freeze with fear, but here he was. The glowing had spread to his neck now.
"Arthur.", his name had made him look up into his friends eyes.
"It's going to be ok.". Why was Merlin comforting him?
"Idiot," he said more fondly than he entended, "I'm supposed to say that to you!".
"Do you trust me?"
He didn't freeze or hesitate with that one.
"Yes."
The glowing was in his eyes now.
"Then trust him as well.".
"Merlin!".
FLASH. A explosion of light temporarily blinds him.
It took a moment to process that he had also been thrown a few paces back.
Merlin.
Was Merlin dead?
The thought made him sick to his stomach.
After recovering, the king looked in front him.
A man, with his back turned to Arthur was standing where Merlin had been, looking around.
"What the hell have the druids done to me now!?"
That voice.
"Why must they do this? Couldn't they have just listened to me??"
Arthur decided to slowly get up and took a better look at the man. He wore a brown cloak that certainly didn't seem comfortable, leather forearm braces and curly back hair.
Was this a trick?
Arthur almost had half a mind to pull out his sword and demand answers for what the hell had just happened. But he also didn't know if he could pull a sword on Merlin, or at least someone that sounded, and talked, and felt, and looked, and moved like Merlin.
"Nooo, let's completely ignore Merlin and teleport him to God knows where without even a warnin-"
"Merlin.".
The man froze for a minute and Arthur couldn't blame him.
He slowly turned around and the king was greated with a full black beard and wide deep blue eyes he would know anywhere.
The age in his face, the broader shoulders, the diferent clothes, the black beard and hair that was longer and curled along his forehead, eyes and nape.
Everything felt unfamiliar and familiar at the same time.
This was Merlin, definitely older, but Merlin all the same.
Everything was a shock but something stood out from all the rest.
The grief in his eyes.
He had seen his manservant grieve before but this was diferent. Merlin looked like he was seeing a ghost in front of him.
"Arthur?"
Even the way he said his name.
"I-Is that you?", he has slowly gotten closer and extended his hand to touch the king's chest with his fingertips.
Soon his full palm touched his heart, as if trying to make sure Arthur was really there. The hand seemed to warm him to his core.
"Merlin?...what?", another hand rose to his cheek, wiping away a tear. When had he started crying?
And suddenly Merlin was hugging him like he thought he would vanish right there and then, and Arthur's wasn't sure if that wasn't possible, due to what had just happened.
How had they come to this?
He was considering giving up hunting.
-------
I tried my best, hope you enjoyed it.
Nothing will come out of it from me. I mean probably, I'm just not a great writer, I'm dyslexic and my english is not good enough to write full fanfics I think, but if anyone wants to pick it up they are welcome to.
Any advice or just smth about my writing is appreciated.
Also if you spot any mistakes, please tell me.

I want to talk about Arthur's reaction to Merlin being a sorcerer in magic reveal fics.
There are the ones that portray a very violent and cruel Arthur. Fisically injuring Merlin on impulse or trying to supress his magic with cold iron. Almost killing him by accident due to outburst or ignorance for him to feel very guilty afterwards. I get why they do it. The angst and drama. And, while there are very well written fics with these prompts, I don't actually believe Arthur would react that way. No matter how betrayed, angry and hurt he feels.
True, there were occasions where Arthur reacted badly, or really, just two occasions: when Morgause told him the truth about his birth and he almost killed his father, and when Gwen "cheated" on him with Lancelot and banish her. However, in the first scenario he genuinely believed his father had killed his mother just out of selfishness, the mother he never got to meet and blame himself for her death all his life, and then killed thousands, not really out of guilt or revenge which probably was Uther main motive, but out of pure hypocrisy. Honestly, even the most kindhearted and nonviolent person would react that badly! I don't think we can compare learning your best friend lied to you about being a sorcerer for years with that. When it came to Gwen though Arthur was actually merciful. As King he should have had her executed, he couldn't NOT punish her in some way because there were witnesses and he couldn't be look as a weak or unreasonable King. And even as angry as he was, he let her explain herself, he was willing to listen to what she had to say. Looking a little backwards, when Arthur found Gwen kissing Lancelot and went on full rage, he never draw his sword at her and is actually when she put herself between Lancelot and his blade that he stops. The woman he loved betrayed him, made him look like a fool infront an entire council and probably the entire kingdom as well and yet he never once insulted her. The much he did, besides banish her of course, was shaking her by the arms in his anger but it's short lived and he quickly apologised after that, because even after what Gwen did to him he can't bare the though of hurting her.
Then there are the fics were Arthur reacts too nicely to the news. He is understanding, he doesn't even get mad at all. He is fine with Merlin being a sorcerer right away. While these fics tend to be cute and all fluff, they make less sense to me that the first ones I mentioned. Arthur still was raised to hate magic, that doesn't go away just in a minute. Also while he can be a very reasonable man, he is a very resentful one too, at least when it comes to trust. We've seen this through the series, nothing breaks his heart more than someone he cares for betraying his trust. Returning to the previous example, while he let go Gwen unharmed after the infidelity, it took him a long time to actually forgive her. Also, while not being a violent man normally, Arthur can be very hurtful with words when he's upset. He threathened Merlin with banishment when he was still hurt about Gwen and Merlin kept reminding him about her. When Merlin decided not to go with him to the most important battle in his life, he said his famous "I always though you were the bravest man I ever met... I guess I was wrong". He didn't actually mean the words, but he's hurt so he hurts others to appease the pain. Was he being unfair and selfish when he said these things? Yes, he's not perfect, he has flaws but that makes him human.
So, how do I actually believe Arthur would react if he had found out about Merlin's magic before Canmlan? Not so different really. He would have said hurtful things, would demand to be alone, for Merlin to leave (not banishment), but he wouldn't fisically injure Merlin in any way. He also wouldn't arrest him at least there were other witnesses and he had to keep appearences, because he's still king of a kingdom that bans magic. But even then he would late let Merlin explain himself and make sure he has a fair trial, a trial Arthur would definitely arrange in a way Merlin is found innocent, or he would give him a royal pardon, and he would make sure Merlin is not harm while he's in the dungeons. Banishment would be a last resort if the council is firm about Merlin being punish, because laws and mentalities can't be changed in a day after all.
But if there're not other witnesses, Arthur would simply not require his servicies for a while, ignore him for some days, weeks maybe, but not a long time really. Again, he can be a resentful person, but not an unreasonable one, he would eventually call for Merlin and be willing to listen to him. The intesity of his anger and hurt, and how troubled he feels about his believes on magic, would depend on which season the magic reveal happens. But, generally, the actions he would take would be the same. Let's remember that even when he found out about Merlin's magic in Camnlan, after all the betrayals he suffered, when Merlin left him alone with Gaius, he ordered Gaius, not for Merlin to be arrested or to disclose to someone Merlin was a sorcerer, but to have Merlin take a word to Gwen! To his wife! If he really believed Merlin was evil, that he could hurt him, he wouldn't dare to do that. Also, as soon as he learned he needed Merlin to have a chance of survival, he accepted his help, reluctantly yes, but he did let him take him to the sidhe when he could easly refuse and demand Gaius to do it or refuse to do it all together cause going to the sidhe would mean using magic on himself and put faith in a sorcerer. So, no, I don't believe he ever planed on taking Merlin to the dungeons, much less kill him, even then. He just wanted to be left alone for a moment, he needed Merlin to leave because it hurt to see him after the revelation, after the betrayal.
Anyways, those are my thoughts. What do you think?

For @merlinmicrofic March prompt: "Trust Me" | Merthur (can be gen) | 155 words
"You'll be fine, Merlin. Trust me.”
And of course, the idiot had trusted Arthur. Because for all his inability to hold a sword or shield, or even stay on his feet during a fight, Merlin is still the bravest man Arthur had ever met.
So he trusted Arthur when the prince told him that the branch would hold his weight, after it successfully held Arthur, who easily swung across to the otherside of the ice cold river.
Except apparently the branch only held enough strength for one such trip. Arthur regretted that he hadn't instead trusted Merlin's advice, and let his (admittedly much lighter) manservant go first to test the strength of the branch.
And now here they are, huddled together around a fire, Merlin too cold to even complain about Arthur's bad ideas and pigheadedness.
“Trust me,” he'd said. Arthur looked down at his concerningly quiet manservant. Why do you always trust me, Merlin?

I only just realized this upon watching Diamond of the Day for the third time but we all know when Arthur tells Merlin, “I always thought you were the bravest man I ever met” right? Well I just realized that he takes it back by adding, “I guess I was wrong” afterwards.
I don’t know if my brain just conveniently forgot that bit or if I didn’t truly understand or pay attention to what he said but I have no recollection of those few words at all and it really changes how I view this whole interaction.
I was so appalled upon first realizing because I thought Arthur would be fine with Merlin not going (or atleast pretend to be) because he wouldn’t want any one that serves him to risk their lives unwillingly but Arthur actually shows that he’s upset (or atleast disappointed).
It’s different that Merlin is the one saying he can’t go with him this time because it’s Merlin and this is when he needs him the most. Of course Arthur didn’t know why he couldn’t go and the excuse that Merlin gave him was a very flimsy one but it still breaks my heart. Merlin looks so torn when Arthur takes back what he said :(((

wanna talk abt that one infamous line in 5x12: “i always thought you were the bravest man ive ever met…”
followed by the heart-wrenching: “…guess i was wrong.”
the last part of this quote is, without a doubt, incredibly manipulative. arthur’s reasoning for saying smth like that was probably to get merlin to beg for forgiveness and to offer to join in the battle.
it’s understandable for arthur to be hurt over merlin not accompanying him to the most important battle of his life, however it certainly doesn’t justify the intent of his harsh words.
merlin has always proven to be a courageous and loyal servant — and obviously, friend — to arthur. merlin has risked his life for him — most cases which arthur was not aware of, however there were times he knew, times in which merlin was close to certain death because he had risked everything for arthur. a prime example is 1x04; merlin drank the cup filled with poison in front of the entire banket. granted, he was forced by uther to do so, but he did not object to drinking from the cup. arthur was there to witness this happening.
merlin has always accompanied arthur to battle or in minor quests. to arthur’s knowledge, merlin is a mere servant who does not possess magic. furthermore, merlin has never asked for nor was he given any weapons to defend himself with in times of danger, thus making him all the more brave — and possibly stupid — in arthur’s eyes.
the fact that arthur claimed to be “wrong” about merlin being “the bravest man [hes] ever met” was a manipulative statement to pressure merlin into joining him to the battle of camlann.
i’d argue that it was incredibly unnecessary of him to add such a thing when he was praising merlin; he undermined merlin’s efforts and loyalty. it’s perfectly understandable for him to be upset in that moment, however there is no excuse for him to have said something so… cruel.

I honestly feel like we should talk more about Arthur's, "I always thought you were the bravest man I ever met," because the thing is, I don't think Arthur necessarily meant bravery in terms of like, a knight. I mean yes, he probably meant that too because Merlin accompanied him on every mission and into every fight, but I think what he is actually referring more to is how Merlin never feared speaking his mind to Arthur. The very first thing he did upon meeting Arthur was to call him out on his shit, not even backing down when he realised who Arthur was, and he never stopped doing so.
It's why Arthur comes to trust and rely on Merlin's advice so much, because he is certain that Merlin will never tell him what he wants to hear, that Merlin will always be honest with him. Arthur's trust in Merlin's honesty is one of the cornerstones of their whole relationship, and considering that Arthur is the prince and later king, that he doesn't always initially react well when Merlin tells him what he doesn't want to hear, that does take a lot of bravery.
And it is also why Arthur follows it up with the verbal punch of, "I guess I was wrong." Because Camlann isn't some small mission, some random fight with bandits. It is going to be the battle Camelot has been heading for, the battle that will see either Arthur or Morgana dead, and whichever one it is, neither is going to be easy. Merlin hasn't let Arthur go alone anywhere for the last ten years, and this is the time he says that he won't be coming with Arthur—because of a "vital errand he has to run for Gaius"?
Of course Arthur doesn't buy that. Of course Arthur knows that it's a blatant lie. And I do think that Arthur has always been aware that Merlin kept some things from him and simply trusted him enough to let him have those, but this is so vastly different, and it makes absolutely no sense to him why Merlin wouldn't trust him enough to tell him at least the truth about why he is leaving Arthur now, of all times.
That's the, "I guess I was wrong." I guess I was wrong about believing that you weren't afraid to tell me the truth when it mattered, that you trusted me enough, that you would never leave my side when it mattered.
It isn't even so much about Merlin keeping a secret; it's about the poor, blatant lie, because the next time Arthur hears from Merlin is when he dreams of him, and he still immediately trusts in what Merlin tells him.
Only to then, the next time they see each other, find out just how much Merlin has been keeping from and lying to him.
Which, obviously, Merlin had his reasons for. And once Arthur understood that, he forgave him anyway because it ultimately proved all over what he said—just how brave Merlin had been, even if it looked a little different than Arthur originally believed.

𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐲 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐭
Tumblr media
He would meet you outside of work, somewhere he frequently visits like a coffee shop near his home or antiquarian bookshop for example.
It goes without saying he’s the most gentleman-y boyfriend you’ve ever had. Harry never forgets a date, always makes sure you’re alright and will always inform you if it goes late in work.
Although, he was very nervous in the beginning of your guys’ relationship. You were always the first one to indicate a hug or a kiss.
You also said I love you first.
You are his anchor but also his escape form the hectic and dangerous work.
He’d tell you that when you both were tangled in the sheets, cuddling after a long and tiring day. Harry would have his hand stroking your hair, letting the scent of your shampoo ground him into reality.
In exchange you’d comfort him when he was dwelling in his memories or blaming himself for a mission gone wrong.
“You’re quite possibly the bravest man I’ve ever met.”
Harry would hug you even tighter after that.
Date nights weren’t a cyclic thing, but you guys did always somehow manage to wiggle in a date night or two per month.
Being the gentleman he is, Harry would most likely take you to a restaurant, maybe also to a movie he had heard you talk about.
But overall, your relationship was mainly kept low profile because in the end of the day, Harry was an agent and he’d never forgive himself if that’s what would get your hurt.
Merlin would be the only one who’d know about you. To anyone else you were just Harry’s close friend.
Until, you were caught making out like teenagers in Harry’s apartment. Eggsy had walked in, one of you had forgot to lock the door, leading Eggsy to wanting to boil his eyeballs out.
“Jesus fuck! Harry!?”
“... in our defense it is Harry’s apartment”, you said after a while, trying to fix your clothes subtly.
You didn’t mind Eggsy knowing, as you knew Harry trusted him with his life. And now you had three personal bodyguards, so you considered it a win-win situation.

Wonderland Ball (2/4)
Chapters: 1  2  3  4
previous chapter   next chapter
featuring several characters from other fairy tales!!
-----
The door opened to a maid with a curious face on, “Is everything alright..oh! Miss Audrey, Where did everyone go? I heard something and everything started shaking.”
“Isabella,” she said, “Um...yeah. Everyone just left.”
“Pardon?” she asked, still confused.
Audrey shook her hand, “Nevermind that, we’re spending Christmas Eve without them. So what should we do?”
Deciding not to press on the matter Isabella asked, “This is your first Christmas here in Golden Goose is it not? Last year you all traveled.”
Audrey nodded, “What do you guys usually do around here?”
Isabella smiled “There’s a lovely festival organized by the townspeople! Food as a far as the eye can see, music, children getting presents, colorful lights and trees to decorate...oh my lady, you really must see it, it’s wonderful!”
Audrey thought for a bit before nodding, “That sounds amazing, Isabella. How about a change of location?”
Meanwhile on the far end of the Island the group had resurfaced to a large room. As the purple smoke cleared the group were in their original positions, just in a different setting.
“Were we just transported here?” Merlin looked around. “Is everyone alright?”
“Yeah,” Goldie said, fingers on her temples, “Just a little hazy..”
“This interior looks like the Wonderland Palace.” Gretel said looking around
“So the cat really did bring us all here.” Arthur said.
“All our stuff seems to be here too.” Kio walked around.
“Wait, where’s Audrey?” Jack looked around. The group indeed saw that all of them were here except for her.
“Do you think she got left behind?” Gwen looked left and right.
“That Cat was very particular in singling her out when he was greeting all of us.” Pino thought, “Do you think he left her behind on purpose?”
Jack frowned at that response, to which Pino raised both his hands “I’m just saying that’s a possibility.”
“The doors are locked too.” Briar shook the handles.
“You must first change to your proper attire!”
“Eep!”
Briar jumped back as soon as she saw a little white mouse appear from the keyhole. “Hurry! Quickly! Hastily! The ball is soon! Please change to your highness’ formal attire!” As soon as the mouse had left, thirteen closet doors had opened with their old gowns and uniforms that represented their Kingdom. They always had to wear those whenever there was an audience or social obligations.
“Uh oh..” Peter frowned at his uniform.
It took a bit but they were all able to fit in their outfits. The triplets had matching blue, yellow, and brown uniforms, as did Hans and Gretel with their green, yellow, and brown colors. Merlin’s donned blue as well as a red sash. Snow had blue, yellow, and red. Jack had blue, purple and brown. Arthur had red and orange, Goldie had blue white and yellow, and Peter’s was green and brown. Briar Rose’s dress was interesting as it often changed between pink and blue, depending on how you looked at it.
“Wow, you look like Mama.” Hans looked at Gretel. She looked at him for a bit before looking at herself in the mirror, twirling occasionally,
“Thanks, you look nothing like Papa.”
Hans playfully rolled his eyes as she laughed. On the other end of the room stood Goldie helping Peter with his cuffs. “I don’t understand, what’s not to like? I love my dress, always have.” she said.
“Makes me feel stiff,” Peter told her.
Jack usually looked for any excuse to bring out his uniform, but he wasn’t feeling it very much around this time. And the others could tell once they started making their way to the ballroom and he didn’t gawk at the jewels and roses they had on display.
An uptight looking man donned with a white suit stood beside them as a pair of twins held their hands on the knobs of the double doors. “Ah, finally! You know just because you’re the Island’s greatest heroes, that does not mean you get to be late! Time is of the essence!” the man scolded them. He took out a pocket watch and wiped his forehead, “You just barely made it..” he muttered.
“Get ready,” he quickly made his way to the door as one of the twins opened it for him. The F7 heard his loud voice through the doors.
“Here ye, here ye!”
“Told him his voice was too loud.” one of the twins holding the door handles said.
“Honestly, never listens.” The other responded.
The man's voice continued, “Announcing the arrival of Fairy Tale Island’s greatest and bravest heroes. Who suddenly disappeared but have now resurfaced. The princes who heroically protect this land from danger with their strength, prestigious backgrounds, and talents. The princes’ we have all been awaiting, The Fearless Seven!”
“Let’s go, boys.” Merlin told them.
The twins had opened the door on cue, and as if they were used to this, the F7 had walked in the ballroom with an overwhelming amount of presence. Their perfect formation and aura as a group lived up to their reputation. And the fact that they have been gone for years only made their entrance bigger, as this was their first formal reappearance.
“Prince Arthur, Prince Hansel, Prince Kio, Prince Noki, Prince Pino, Prince Jack, and their leader, Prince Merlin!”
Familiar faces to them were around the room, faces they had only seen occasionally but knew each other from previous balls. Faces that were now in awe, some princes and princesses looking at them with lovestruck gazes, some that were much too happy with their reappearance, and others who couldn’t believe they were in the same room as them.
And although they knew better now, they would be lying if they said they didn’t miss this just a little bit.
Once they had reached the altar, they knelt on one knee, put their right hand on their chests, and bowed their heads in perfect synchronization to the woman sitting on the throne.
“Queen Alice, it is an honor to be here. You have my gratitude for extending the invitation to us.” Merlin said with his head down.
Her Majesty warmly smiled, “Nonsense, it is my honor to have you here at my party. I’m glad Cheshire convinced you all to be here, I wasn’t sure if he’d be successful!” she lightly laughed. To her right was the gentleman Chesire Cat who only grinned at her, and to her left was the person who everyone knew to be the Mad Hatter, who rolled his eyes at the man. “Please, raise your heads.” Alice told them.
They did as she said and stood up from her throne. “Everyone! Please join me in giving a warm round of applause to our Island’s greatest heroes. The Fearless Seven!”
After the formalities were over, the F7 had made their way back to their friends. “Wow, some introduction they gave you guys.” Gretel rolled her eyes.
“Oh don’t be jealous, Gret.” Hans handed her a drink.
“I’m not jealous.” she frowned at him.
“She is, she looks at me the same way whenever I finish repairing something faster than her.” Pino laughed.
“Gretel? I’ve missed you!” a woman with the longest braid they had seen walked up to them.
“Rapunzel? Wow, it’s been so long.” Gretel greeted her former neighbor.
“Aw Hans look at you!” Rapunzel cooed at the ginger haired boy who sheepishly rubbed the back of his hair, “You’re so big now! I remember when me and your sister used to dress you up in my old clothes when you were a baby. We used to put all sorts of accessories on him,” she then suddenly remembered, “We called him Princess Hannah!”
Gretel gasped and grinned at her brother, “Oh my god, Princess Hannah. I forgot about that!” Hans’ smile had only morphed in disapproval when he heard the name. Briar Rose listened in to the conversation, a mischievous gleam in her eyes.
“Wait is this why I get scared when I smell freshly made leather bracelets? And why I hate the sounds of corsets? Gretel that caused me trauma.” he told her.
She scoffed, “Yeah, you're the one who has PTSD between the both of us.” to which Hans frowned at, “Kidding, kidding,” she told him, “So are you here with anyone Raps?”
“Yeah, my cousins are here. The Snow Queen and her sister.” she gestured to the other side of the room.
“Look at all the royalty here,” Jack said in awe, “I almost forgot what it feels like.”
Arthur took a sip of the champagne, “Ten o’clock. Snow Queen is approaching you.”
“Hm?”
Jack looked towards the woman with the white gown who curtsied in front of him, “Prince Jack, a pleasure to see you.”
Jack returned the gesture by kissing her hand, “Your Majesty, I am honored by your presence.”
She smiled and averted her gaze slightly, “Forgive me for being so blunt, but I want to ask, have you met a man that goes by Jack Frost?”
Jack humored her by rolling his eyes, “I want to tell you I haven’t, Your Majesty. Unfortunately the opposite is true.”
The Snow Queen let out a giggle as her eyes began to quite literally sparkle with tiny snowflakes, “Do you see him often? What is he like? Oh! Does he do that thing where he balances on his staff then pretends to fall, only to surprise you from behind?”
“I would be mortified if he ever did that to me. Do you know him?” he asked her.
“A little,” she bashfully tucked her long white hair behind her ear. It was a sight for Jack and Arthur as they had always expected the Snow Queen to be serious and formal. “He comes by my castle sometimes, and oh, we have the loveliest conversations but they’re always cut so short.”
“If I may be so bold, Your Majesty, I’d say you fancy the lad.” Arthur smiled.
“Fancy? Me?” At Arthur’s suggestion she laughed and accidentally froze his drink with her hands, “Oh, sorry. But I don’t know what you're talking about, Prince Arthur. What a silly imagination you have. Excuse me.” she bowed smiling. But not soon before she mumbled to Jack, “Please mention me next time? Thank you, Your Highness.” and she ran off to her sister.
“I wanted to tell her ‘run away’.” Jack sipped his drink.
“Arthur!” Merlin called out from behind, “You remember these buffoons don’t you?”
“Shut it, Merlin. I’ll throw you off the balcony again.” Edmund laughed as he gently pushed the wizard.
“Arthur! You’ve gained weight!” Peter punched his chest, “Oof, nevermind.”
Arthur laughed and pulled him in for hugs, “Oh I’ve missed you jackasses too.”
“Hello, Prince Arthur,” two ladies stood beside Merlin.
Susan smiled, “You and Merlin are still getting along well, I’m glad.”
“We caught up with Gwen earlier, I’m so happy for you two!” Lucy beamed.
“Ah, meeting the two fairest ladies in all of Narnia, and now their brave and heroic sisters Susan and Lucy. Seeing all four of you brings tears to my eyes.” Arthur dramatically said, followed up by an angry Peter and Edmund trying to bring him down.
“Well look at that. I’m not surprised to see Arthur being beaten up by a bunch of princes at a ball.” Goldie noted.
Peter Pan laughed, “I’ll say, it wouldn’t be a shock if he got kicked out early by destroying Queen Alice’s tea set.”
The triplets let out a loud laughter and spilled their drinks on the carpeted floor.
“Boys, I am quite disappointed.”
The familiar voice that reached the triplets' ears immediately made them stand up straight as they quickly removed their hats.
“Honestly, making a scene like that. Your father was right to send me here.” a man in a black coat and blue top hat held his head high as he examined the boys one by one. “Good posture, clear skin...oh your hair is a mess, Kio.” he rubbed Kio’s blind hair with his hands. “Mind your manners, boys.”
“Yes, Jiminy...” they let out a dragged response to which Jiminy eyed them and they said a clearer response, “Yes, Jiminy, sir.”
“Good, I suppose these are your beloveds, Noki and Kio.” he looked at the pair, “Princess Goldilocks and Peter Pan.”
“Oh thank god you got my name right.” Peter sighed in relief.
“I hope my boys have been treating you well. I did not raise them to act otherwise. Thank you for blessing them with your affections”
Noki and Kio flushed a bright red when they heard that, “C’mon, Jiminy. Stop that, nobody says that anymore!” Noki frowned at him.
“Afraid I’m embarrassing you in front of your girlfriend, Noki?” he raised his eyebrows and proceeded to whisper to Goldie, “When he was younger he had problems wetting the bed at night. Use that information however you please.” to which she let out a laugh.
“Oh I will definitely use that as ammunition.” she told him.
“Have you met Gretel, Jiminy?” Pino asked.
“Oh, red hair, glasses? I met her earlier along with Princess Snow White. Lovely woman, polite manners, well done.” Jiminy responded, “If I’m not mistaken that's her and Princess Rapunzel chasing Prince Hansel, am I right?”
Pino raised eyebrows before putting his hat back on, “Should probably see what that's about…” and ran off.

Just finished Merlin. I’m a wreck.
I think the first time I have ever blogged about something here on Tumblr it was about the 2013 MCM London Comic Con, when I went to a Merlin panel with @ilovetextingandscones and then met Alexander Vlahos and Tom Hopper, although I had barely watched half a season of it, so it feels only appropriate to dedicate one of my rare posts to the day in which I have finally watched the final episode of the final season, 5x12-13, and I am an emotional mess because of it. Probably, if I had watched all of it before that panel, I would have barely been able to stand on my legs meeting Tom and Alex, although it would have been much, much worse with Colin, whom I have seen twice in theatre plays (Mojo and The Tempest at the Globe) and fuck, I wish I had watched Merlin sooner to be properly in awe of him upon seeing him.
Tumblr media
Damn, where do I start? The Diamond of the Day hit me hard. Real hard. It is a crescendo of emotions, and not only because of the battle, the deaths of such good and much-loved characters and stuff, but also because it starts out with two very painful occurrences: not only has Mordred revealed Merlin's identity as Emrys to Morgana, so she sends that sort of black, eyeless slug to suck out Merlin's magic and he's defenceless right when Arthur needs him the most, but also, in order to try and recover said magic, he has to tell Arthur he won't be with him for the battle and the king looks so genuinely betrayed. As us viewers know that Merlin doesn't deserve this, it stings, it's a subtle and enduring pain, because you feel as if they're running out of time and there will be no chance for them to be as they were before.
You know, Merlin, all those jokes about you being a coward... I never really meant any of them. I always thought you were the bravest man I ever met. Guess I was wrong.
Then, of course, the battle takes place, but the tension accompanying it comes from an entire season build-up: the fifth season is a gradual progression of anxiety in which, just like Merlin, you stare warily at Mordred, remembering what he said as a child ("I shall never forgive this, Emrys, and I shall never forget") and knowing he will be the one to kill Arthur, and watch Merlin try to avert the impending doom without succeeding, rather ensuring it with every single choice he makes.
Intertwined with the battle, starting just a little before it, is the Crystal Cave sequence, and I swear, when Merlin is trapped and screams that heartwrenching scream, desperate, hopeless, fearing that he will never recover the magic that he was born with and that Arthur will die because of it, I felt as if my heart was being ripped from my chest. The pain was only mitigated by the whole conversation with his father, a very touching moment, and especially the fact that Balinor told his son that he is made of the very magic that is the fabric of the earth and no one can take that away from him (huge sigh of relief on my part at that).
Tumblr media
This gave me hope and made it all the more exciting to see him rise from the cave like Gandalf the White and ride towards Camlann on that horse (which is basically Shadowfax, very Gandalf too). When he gets there it's even more powerful and satisfying to see him cut through Morgana's ranks with lightning thanks to his staff (again, Gandalf) and slam her against the wall.
Tumblr media
When Arthur gets stabbed and Mordred dies, the countdown to the end starts ticking even more loudly, but then I thought that there was still so much to say, so much to repair in Arthur and Merlin’s relationship. Because this relationship is the core of the story, no other surpasses it - and it pains me to count below it even the father-son bond that Merlin and Gaius share, because it is sweet and profound and Gaius is my fave - and there was no way it could finish like this, riddled with misunderstandings. Hence, the best part of it all started for me when Merlin lifted Arthur’s unconscious, wounded body and left for Avalon.
Tumblr media
Sure, it was not easy watching Arthur react to Merlin's revelation, but it was rewarding to hear that he might not have executed his servant had he decided to reveal himself sooner, and even more rewarding was it to hear that Merlin didn't do it so that he wouldn’t put his friend in such a conundrum.
Arthur: Why did you never tell me?
Merlin: I wanted to, but...
Arthur: What?
Merlin: You'd have chopped my head off.
Arthur: I'm not sure what I'd have done.
Merlin: And I didn't want to put you in that position.
Arthur: That's what worried you?
Merlin: Some men are born to plow fields, some live to be great physicians, others to be great kings. Me? I was born to serve you, Arthur, and I'm proud of that, and I wouldn't change a thing.
Of course Arthur feels betrayed at the beginning. Betrayed by the last person who could have betrayed him after his father, his uncle, his half-sister, his most loyal knight, his wife - he’s got such a big heart and he doesn’t deserve it being shattered every time, but alas, that’s his lot in this world. But then, as time goes by and he sees Merlin perform magic, he realises just how much he did for him without never seeking credit - a recurring theme throughout the five seasons, that Merlin is always royally frustrated about - employing the magic that had only been used to take so much from him until then. It's a nice, redeeming ending for the whole ‘magic is bad and can only be used for evil' theme that started off the series, as now Arthur can really see magic being used for good like he has never seen it before.
Arthur: All these years, Merlin. You never once sought any credit.
Merlin: It's not why I do it.
In the meantime, Morgana tortures Gwaine to discover where Arthur and Merlin are headed, Percival hears him scream and breaks free from the ropes tying him only to reach his friend, who barely manages to tell him that Morgana knows where Merlin and Arthur are headed before dying in his arms. Yay, another big crack in my heart was just what I needed. And what’s worse is that he thinks he has failed his friend. Goddamnit you absolutely did NOT! Gwaine, my precious baby... I will just split my consciousness the way I do with Fred Weasley, so I can just remove his death from memory as non-existent. Because. It. Never. Happened. NEVAH.
Tumblr media
To counterbalance this wave of depression, I had another moment that positively broke me, but in a good way, tying another loose end: Arthur almost never apologises for anything and mocks Merlin, albeit mostly good-humouredly, throughout the show. And now not only his view of magic is changing, but also his perspective on his friend and on his own behaviour towards him. I don’t say I started crying then because I was already copiously doing so, but I think I let out a little wail, just for the sake of punctuating the importance of the moment.
Arthur: Merlin. Whatever happens...
Merlin: Shh. Don't talk.
Arthur: I'm the king, Merlin. You can't tell me what to do.
Merlin: I always have. I'm not going to change now.
Arthur: I don't want you to change. I want you... to always... be you. I'm sorry about how I treated you.
They are about to reach Avalon when Morgana catches up with them, but Merlin stabs her with Excalibur, gently easing her fall like he did when he poisoned her and her hatred for him began. A nice touch, because it’s a violent, tragic scene, but you still see a shadow of the friendship there used to be. Sometimes during series 3 to 5 I thought about how tragically, abruptly this relationship was brought to an end and really it was such a shame, their interaction was very sweet. She was very sweet actually. Sarcastic, fierce, but a sweet cutiepie nevertheless.
Tumblr media
Then Arthur is too weak to move and we get to the last dialogue:
Arthur: With all your magic, Merlin, and you can’t save my life.
Merlin: I can. I’m not going to lose you.
Arthur: Just… Just hold me. Please. There’s something I want to say…
Merlin: You’re not going to say goodbye!
Arthur: No, Merlin… Everything you’ve done. I know now. For me, for Camelot. For the kingdom you helped me build…
Merlin: You’d have done it without me.
Arthur: Maybe. I want to say…something I’ve never said to you before. Thank you.
Merlin: Arthur… No! Arthur! Arthur! Arthur! Come on! Arthur!
Tumblr media
I am not even sure I can comment it properly. It encapsulates so much of their story and their relationship, their intertwined destiny, the future they sought to build for Albion, their constant, unwavering friendship and loyalty... and the fact that, as Merlin had to keep his powers a secret, not once was his help fully acknowledged. So, basically, that small, final “thank you” hit me with the force of a truck on a high-speed train.
Merlin asks for one last favour from Kilgharrah - another painful detail, the Great Dragon is getting old and his wings are all tattered, so depressing ffs - who takes them to the lake and, for the last time, after throwing Excalibur in the water for Freya to catch it, Merlin lays someone he loves in a boat and enchants it to drift far from the shore, towards the realm of the Sidhe, where Arthur will reside until Albion will be in its hour of greatest need and he shall rise again. The last shot is of an elderly, modernly-dressed Merlin walking by a road, near the lake and the Sidhe tower now half-ruined, waiting for the time to come. This too was a subtly depressing scene for me, because the modern setting implies that he is now alone. He alone is immortal, so no Gaius. No Gwen. No Percival. No Leon. No one. Just him. Alone. Waiting.
***
I thought I would calm down a bit after writing, putting pen to paper always helps me process things, but the truth is that, despite knowing how it would end, I didn’t manage to be ready for it anyway, so it hit me full force. I don’t have much else to fill my life with feelings-wise, so these stories represent almost all my emotional nourishment and it has proven time and again impossible to treat them with more detachment, just enough for me not to get hurt. I watched Merlin and Arthur’s relationship blossom and grow for five seasons, I saw mutual trust and respect on a deep level, but also jokes and fun with a pinch of irony and mischievousness. Despite the prince-servant context, they were equals, they were friends, none of the two felt subordinate to the other, they would trust each other with their lives and often did. And there was, above all, fierce, raw, mutual love and loyalty. I mean, what more could I ask from a story, from a relationship?

[Note to self: go and read The Student Prince and listen to and watch everything Merlin-related I have missed in these seven years. As soon as I stop howling, that is.]

Merthur gems from the BBC children’s Book ‘The poisoned Chalice’
This was episode 4....EPISodE 4
A bond had developed between Merlin and Arthur after all they’d been through, and if that included a few practical jokes along the way, well, that’s just the way Arthur was.
Arthur stood up. “But if it’s poisoned he’ll die!” he cried.  Merlin thought he actually sounded really worried which was sort of nice. He didn’t mind someone making him wear a silly hat so much if they’d also stand up for him like this.
(Merlin) He felt sad inside - sad that the end had come so suddenly and unexpectedly but he couldn’t let himself think about that. He just had to save Arthur.
It all seemed very clear to Arthur. Merlin had risked the king’s wrath to warn his prince of the danger, then willingly drunk the poison meant for him. Arthur had been brought up by the knight’s code, and he respected noble and brave deeds. This, to him, was one of the bravest, noblest deeds he’d ever witnessed, and Merlin didn’t deserve to die for it. I always thought you were the bravest man I ever met
It was Arthur’s duty to do whatever he could to save Merlin in return. It would be his duty even if he hadn’t come to...well, to like his servant. He’d never tell Merlin that of course. It wouldn’t do. But there was a connection between them. Servants had always been like part of the furniture, hovering discreetly in the background and doing chores when needed - but Arthur actually enjoyed Merlin’s company.
Tumblr media
So Merlin didn’t deserve to die - and Arthur didn’t want him to die.
...every instinct he possessed was urging him to defy the king and rescue Merlin.
What his instincts - what his heart was telling him to do was the right thing.
He felt no triumph at his escape. He had survived but Merlin’s life would not be saved until the leaf was in Gaius’ capable hands.
He was tired and hurt but still sitting upright in the saddle. All that mattered was getting the leaf to Gaius.
But to Arthur’s horror, the king held up his hand - and crushed the fragile plant. “Don’t!” the prince cried in anguish. As Uther strode from the dungeons, the prince of Camelot flung himself on his hands and knees, desperately reaching through the bars to scrabble for the tiny broken leaf.
(After Gaius told him about Arthur’s mission) For a moment Merlin had a strange flash of memory - a vision of Arthur in a cave - but dismissed it as a fever dream and forgot it again almost straight away. It’s like Merlin’s magic thought for itself to save Arthur that its so deep in him to save him even when he’s dying his magic protects Arthur. Because its for him all for him.
He felt incredibly grateful to Arthur but a little embarrassed too. There were moments when they seemed to be close, he and the prince, and he knew there was no malice in Arthur’s teasing - but surely a prince and a servant could never be real friends? The thing was, almost without realising it, Merlin had come to admire Arthur - he longer had any trouble believing the Great Dragon’s prediction that Arthur would become a remarkable king. Merlin was prepared to die to make that happen. What he hadn’t bargained for was that Arthur would be willing to risk his life in return. He could sense that this was something big; that the bond tying him to Arthur connected them more closely than he’d imagined.
Tumblr media
But he also knew that they would never be able to put any of this into words, or even acknowledge it to each other. *cough diamond of the day cough*
So when Arthur put his head around the door to say “Still alive then?” Merlin only said, “Just about - I understand I have you tot thank for that.”
And then, because he felt he had to at least make the effort and acknowledge what had happened, Merlin said, “Arthur...thank you.”
Arthur smiled, slightly uncomfortable as well, “You too.  Get some rest.”

“A Spat” Merlin x Reader
(A/N: Alrighty! Here’s an extended version of Imagine getting into a spat with Merlin.
I hope you like it!)
Late afternoon sun rays cast long shadows along the courtyards and corridors as you had strolled. Along the way you had met up with Merlin in one of the many halls of Camelot’s castle. Checking on him as needed because you noticed he held himself differently as he walked. There was light talking as you walked with him back to Gaius’ and expressed your worry there.
Then a spat broke out.
It all started with an argument about him getting hurt. Then it went from him trying to brush it off to you figuring out that he had been going after Morgana alone. That was when things went south. “You’re acting like this isn’t your first time trying to stop her.” You stood in front of him. He swallowed before answering, “we’ve all tried to stop her. She’s made it her goal to destroy everything in her way from taking Camelot.” “I meant on your own, Merlin.” Your tone lowered, a warning. “Does anyone else know that you do this?” “What matters is keeping Arthur safe. He’s always getting into danger because of someone with some past and vengeance.” Merlin was trying his best to steer you into another topic or view of it at least. It didn’t go unnoticed by you. “How long have you been risking your life like this?” “It doesn’t matter what happens to me!” He snapped, physically back-stepping as a result. “Yes, it does, Merlin. Why the blazes would you say any differently?” His dark eyebrows scrunched together; he knew you weren’t about to let this conversation go without your say. “This is serious, Merlin.” “I make my own choices and I have been for years now. I’m not going to--.” “I don’t want you to get hurt. Darn it!” “I’m fine, (Y/N). Can’t you let this go?” “No.” The young man looked sternly at you. “I know you’ve been hiding something, but I didn’t think it was this.” “It’s nothing.” At his words, Merlin could practically see the fire in your eyes as he found his back hitting the wall. He hadn’t realized that he’d been backing away from you because you were still right in front of him. There wasn’t a time he remembered distancing himself like that. Merlin was too frustrated with you to correctly determine how upset you were at that moment. If only he could make you see reason. To even see how you should drop the conversation all together. You saw the muscle in his jaw flex as you stepped up to him, blocking off any verbal or physical escape route.
“Merlin,” you started before he interrupted. “(Y/N), I know you’re worried about me, but you really need to let this go. I’m fine.” Your stance shifted to one side as you deliberately stuck out a finger at him, “just ‘fine’? Merlin, you--!” “It’s my destiny!” “What?” Your hand dropped to your side. Sighing heavily, Merlin’s head tilted back against the wall. “It’s my destiny to help Arthur in any way that I can.” “And no one knows about it,” you said slowly. “You want it that way?” “It’s better,” Merlin said, taking a moment to look at you again and feeling the tension dissipating. “I’m sorry.” Your shoulders slouching, “I’m really sorry for yelling at you. It’s just that I worry about you and now knowing....a little bit about what you do, I worry. A lot.” “I appreciate you worrying, but I’d appreciate you more if you didn’t tell anyone.” “That sounds....reasonable.” “Thank you.” “Yeah. Yeah. Just don’t get killed because I’ll smack you in the back of the head and go after Morgana myself,” you poked his chest. “Uh...,” he leaned closer to you. “Let’s not start a different argument.” “Good point.” You cleared your throat. “Who knows what else you’re hiding.” Merlin didn’t say anything to that.
The small smile on your face slowly faded, noticing Merlin’s expressive blue eyes.
“Oh, no.”
“What?” He asked, his eyes snapping up to you.
. . .
In the next hour, you tried figuring out more about Merlin’s destiny, which was true in every word he spoke. All of which lead you to more questioning and your memory serving you well more than once. Merlin’s sudden appearances during random events after everything was settled. He always had an odd excuse, you voiced that. You could read him quite well especially when he was frustrated.
“What? Are you secretly becoming a knight? Do you have magic or something? You are always somehow involved with everything that turns out alright in the end.”
Merlin’s lips formed a thin line.
“Can you?” You saw the clouds of conflict in his eyes, “I mean that would be the only reason why you couldn’t explain why you’re always disappearing and giving random excuses. And why you’re always helping when magic is involved.”
The young man moistened his lips and took an unsteady breath.
“I have magic.” He whispered.
“Wha-Really? Actual magic? You’re not just really into knowing about it? You can use it?”
“Yes and it’s really important not to mention it to anyone. Especially Arthur.”
“Because you use it to protect him,” you linked together everything. You’d probably end up with a headache later after all of this.
Merlin’s gazed didn’t shift away from you.
“I....That’s a lot. Oh, goodness, Merlin.” You covered your mouth momentarily before adding, “Merlin, please know that I would never tell anyone. If you want me to keep it a secret, I will.”
“Thank you.”
Seeing as your friend was more at ease, it was much easier to smile.
“Merlin,” you exhaled. “You’re the kindest and bravest person I’ve ever met.”
His muscles relaxed and his shoulders slacked, now realizing that you finally saw reason. He could breathe a little easier now.
“I’m sorry.” You stepped up to him, placing your hands on either side of his face, “Guess I can get extremely frustrated with your heroism.” You promptly kissed his lips.
The sorcerer was left wide-eyed from your actions. You slowly started pulling your hands off of him.
“Apology accepted.”
“That’s good--I mean, are you sure? We have been arguing for...a while.” You begun rocking on your heels, eyes shifting elsewhere.
“True,” he rose his eyebrows for a mere second. “And I should probably apologize too. I shouldn’t have yelled. For that I’m sorry.”
Merlin’s eyes peered down to your lips seconds before he leaned in to kiss you.
In turn, your hands returned to his chiseled cheekbones.
“Mmm, never kissed a wizard before.” You mused aloud, left in a happy daze. “Wait, do you prefer being called sorcerer?”
“I prefer being called Merlin,” he swooped back in for another kiss.
You involuntarily squeaked, having not expected the next kiss so soon. Added with feeling the light pressure of Merlin’s hands taking a light hold of your hips. You couldn’t even register if you were still standing on your feet any more.
“I’m sorry,” you murmured between another kiss.
“Hmm...I’m sorry.”
Red lips plucked your own. Back and forth it went, apologies and kisses. Heated air and firm grasps of hands. A not-so-frustrated sorcerer and a not-as-worried citizen of Camelot. Words need not be expressed on how the pair truly felt for each other. Strong and caring in their ways.
The two of you broke another kiss for some air.
“And I do except your apology. Just wanted to add that in,” you rushed out in a short breath.
“Good,” Merlin smiled widely, if only for a moment.
Both of you meeting in the middle for another smooch, again.
Merlin breathed out heavily as he leaned back against the wall. His two arms never leaving your form.
“How many times are we going to be apologizing?” Merlin asked, his lips lingering close to your own.
“Until we forget what we’re apologizing about,” you suggested.
“I still remember what you said about my ‘terribly strange excuses’.”
“Oh,” you grabbed ahold of his jacket. “I’m sorry about that.”
“You should be.” His reddened lips curled into a sly grin.
. . .
AHEM
You and Merlin were startled and broke apart at the sound of a cough, however still standing so close to one another.
“Gaius.” Merlin about choked. “We were...uh.”
“We were arguing,” you said quickly.
Merlin gave you an puzzled look.
In return you waved your hands around in front of you, communicating how you had no idea what else to say. Then, after just realizing, adjusted Merlin’s jacket to settle over his shoulders more presentably.
“I don’t want to know,” Gaius walked straight to one of his tables.
“So,” you coughed, “I made some new soaps yesterday. Would you like some?”
“Soap?” Merlin questioned, thrown off a little.
“Yes. Soap. If you would excuse me Gaius, I’ll go fetch some.”
“I’ll go with you.” Merlin followed you towards the door and did not leave without saying, “I’ll bring back some soap, Gaius.”
“I don’t believe that I am getting any soap,” Gaius said to himself.

Arthur went from trying to take Merlin's head off with a mace to protecting him with his own life.
He went from "You're an idiot" to "All this jokes about you being a coward, I never really meant any of them. I've always thought you're the bravest men I've ever met."
Merlin went from "I'm serious if anyone wants to kill him they can go ahead, in fact I'll give them a hand." to "I willingly give my life to save Arthur's." And "I can't lose him."
He went from a happy and sassy young men who just met Arthur to an old and broken men who just lost Arthur.
They went from:
A: "Do I know you?" M: "I'm Merlin."
A: "So, I don't know you." M: "No."
A: "Yet you called me 'friend'."
To
A: "You're a loyal friend, Merlin."
M: "I also do this because you're my friend and I don't wanna lose you."
And this is beautiful and the best damn thing if you ignore the fact that Arthur dies in Merlin's arms and his last words to him are "Thank you." Something he had never said to him before.
As Arthur asked Merlin why he'd leave Ealdor Merlin said "I just didn't fit in anymore." After Arthur's death Merlin leaves Camelot and now guess why.
Arthur says to Merlin that he doesn't want him to change, but the last scene we see of Merlin is him as an old man. The happy and sassy young guy is gone. There is nothing left of the men Arthur knew.
Arthur's death changed Merlin completely.

“Morning, love,” he hummed pressing a kiss to her cheek coffee in hand.
She stretched the bedsheets falling off her and blinked, “watching me sleep again?”
She catches his small smile as he turns his head away to look out the window. He loves watching her sleep. He won’t admit it but she knows it’s true. That’s when he knew he loved her, all the way back in year five. It took her awhile longer, but he never held that against her.
She loved him like this, in the early morning the soft light from the window illuminating his face. He looked almost angelic then. Without permission her hand traced the stubble on his cheek. He laughed and kissed her fingers one by one, “love you, beautiful girl.”
Her cheeks still burned, and her heart still fluttered the way it did so many years ago. She wished, not for the first time, that the rest of the world could see him this way: so soft, so gentle, so kind. Her fingers traced her tie and she kissed him on the corner of his lips, “only half as much as I love you.”
“You missed,” he breathed like always, moving his mouth till it met hers perfectly. The kiss was soft and sweet… much to short. They were always too short.
There was a twinkle of mischief in her eyes that hadn’t been there in her youth. At times he proudly tell himself that he put it there. She smiled wiggling out of bed, “I’m going to go check on Rana.”
“She,” he started, but Bex was already out of the room. He chuckled. He had just spent the past hour singing his baby to sleep. He loved Rana. In all his wildest dreams he never imagined this: a beautiful house, a life with Bex, a daughter with Bex’s eyes and his nose. His heart swelled. He knew he must have done something right in this life to be so lucky.
It wasn’t long later that Tonks arrived, Lupin and baby Teddy in tow. Bex warmly greeted them at the door, a hug for each and everyone, letting Hec just lay back and enjoy the moment.
“Looks like today’s going to be the day,” Tonks announced like they were going off to a party rather than a war.
Bex nodded, “right, just let me go get Rana ready.”
Hector watched her leave so light and carefree, so different from the sad girl he’d first met. He knew he was standing there like an idiot in love and that Tonks had already moved on to teasing him in the background, but he didn’t care. She returned a moment later.
“Let’s get the kids to Andromedas,” she spoke with Tonks making arrangements.
His heart tugged. He wanted to think like Tonks, to pretend this was just another day in their blissfully domestic lives, but in his heart he knew it wasn’t. No amount of pretending could fix that.
To say he was nervous would be an understatement. He hated to think he was a coward, but the childish desire to take Bex and flee this accursed place was hard to shake. Hogwarts, once his home, contained too many sad memories for him to ever feel at ease there.
She squeezed his hand gently, “stop worrying, you’re going to give yourself wrinkles.”
“I’m not worried,” he denied avoiding her gaze, “just ready to get this over with.”
Bex knows him too well though, he always had thought she was too clever to be a Hufflepuff. He could see the gears turn in her head as she decided what to say, “well I’m worried.”
“Don’t be,” he turned to hold her resting his head atop hers, “I won’t let anything bad happen to you, I promise.”
“You never do,” she smiled looking up at him, “you’re a hero and a healer, Hec. I trust you with my life.”
“Stop being gross you two,” Andre laughs jokingly his arms wrapped loosely around Alana.
Bex shoots her a glare. She’d never forgiven Alana for leaving Andre right before the wedding. Her best friend had been absolutely crushed. Andre had taken Alana back, of course, but that didn’t mean Bex had to. Hector gave the pair a tight smile. He didn’t particularly care for the drama, but no matter the circumstances he’d be on Bex’s side.
“This way Mister Silva,” McGonagall directs him toward where the most wounded would be accumulate, “we’re going to be needing your skills.”
Panic seizes him, “actually Professor, I’d perfect to stick with my wife.”
“Understandable Mister Silva and if we currently weren’t at war I’d oblige your wants,” McGonagall said softly but sternly. Sadly your wife is needed in the west tower and you- you are needed elsewhere.”
“Don’t worry, I’ve got her,” Tonks said giving his a quick hug, “you’re the one we should be worried about. Becareful on the front lines, yeah?”
He waves her off until he see’s Bex’s concerned face, “I’ll be fine.”
“Promise me,” she demands sternly, “I can’t live without you.”
He considers arguing with her. He’d be damned if something happened to him and she goes and off’s herself. He already knew what she’d say to him though. She’d tell him that was all the more reason he should promise. Even if he did die… “I promise you’ll never have to.”
“Was that hard,” she smiles her eyes creasing, the beginnings of crow’s feet, evidence that they’d lived past their sad youths. She hugs him and moves to leave.
“Hey,” he laughs pulling her back to him, “aren’t you going to give me a kiss for good luck?”
“When you make it back I’ll consider it,” she teases pressing one half kiss to the side of his mouth. He had to come back now. That’s how it worked.
He’s out in the field his hands practically in Winston’s stomach when he see’s it. His heart drops.
“Go Mystic, “shouts out to him her hands quickly taking over where his had stilled. Nothing feels real, like he’s somehow walking through a nightmare, drifting through screaming crying spells and blood. His mind races, Bex was there! Oh god Bex!
He blinks himself awake his feet taking him double time in that direction.
Quicker and quicker he moves pushing back against the flow of fleeing traffic. He could barely think, barely breathe. He took the steps two at a time with all the might of a titian hoping beyond all hope that he could reach her on time.
Hector,” she smiled at him a small laugh just beneath the surface, “why are you looking at me like that?”
“I-“ he blinks in embarrassment not knowing how to respond, “I’m not looking at you.”
“You weren’t,” her smile fades somewhat unsure as she played with her ribbon feeling embarrassed, “it must have been my imagination….”
“I meant I’m not looking at you like that.” He moved closed closer to her unsurely, “I’m just glad you’re awake is all.”
She gave him a small smile in return, “me too…. I really thought I was a goner back there.”
When he makes it to the top all he sees at first is destruction.
“Hector,” Alana cries out jumping up from the floor, oh god Bex, “I tried to push her out of the way! She- she- she thought she could get to Tonks and Lupin. I told her it was impossible but-“
“I could have made it,” Bex objects softly, “I could have saved them….”
“Oh godric, oh merlin, I’m so sorry,” Alana cries out throwing her hands over her mouth, “I’m…”
Hector isn’t listening though, he drops down to his knees besides Bex, “damnit Bex.”
“You’re okay,” she says softly, he fingers reaching out for his.
He swallows, “you will be too, just hold on, please….. I need you.”
“No you don’t,” she says softly her fingers tracing his cheek as he tried with all his might to heal her, “you’re the smartest, strongest, bravest man I’ve ever met Hector Silva. It’s why I fell in love with you. Before you my life was sad and lonely and dark…. I never thought I’d live this long…. Let alone be this happy. And you did make me so so happy…”
He notices her breathing shallowing out, “save your breath Bex, tell me later- when your better -when…”
He couldn’t accept any other alternative.
“There isn’t going to be a later,” she says softly, she can feel herself fading, but she needs him to know, “I love you Hec, and I wouldn’t change a thing. Not one damn second of it-“
She gasps and he holds her closer to him cradling her, hoping beyond hope, some miracle would happen.
“I think- I- owe- you- a kiss,” she says between breaths.
He shakes his head tears in his head, “when you’re better.”
“Oh Hec,” she says pressing her lips to his her eyes closing for the last time her fingers slipping from his face….
“Bex? Bex,” he begs although the sensible part of his brain tells him she’s gone back, “come back….. please…. Please come back….”
He curls into her unable to care about the world falling apart around him when his had already ended.
She’s smiling at him from behind the ivy. He chuckles, “you know this is bad luck right?”
“How so,” she teases slipping around it till she’s right next to him, an angel in white.
He rolls his eyes but his annoyance is shallow at best, “the groom isn’t supposed to see the bride before the wedding.”
“I had something I wanted to lend you,” she smiles mischievously, “it’s our something borrowed.”
“Alight,” he chuckles, “lay it on me.”
She smiles, standing on her tip toes to press a kiss to the corner of his mouth.
He laughs much too loudly his arms grabbing the little minx before she could escape, “you tricked me.”
“Not a trick,” she giggles, “it’s a loan.”
A loan he repays on the alter, his lips gently pressed to hers, his heart hammering in his chest. Mrs. Bex Silva. He swore right then he’d never complain about anything ever again. This is certainly more than he deserved.
“He hasn’t moved,” Penny whispered to Dia worriedly as they past, “he won’t let them take the body.”
He tried to block them out, tried not to listen, clinging to her tighter fighting back sleep, afraid he’d wake up to never see her again. She was wrong about him, he wasn’t strong enough. There was a lot he could handle but this was unbearable.
Saffron sat down beside him but didn’t bother talking but she didn’t really look all there either.
Guess you showed up, huh.”
“Yeah….”
“She’s,” he struggled to find the words, so he didn’t bother trying. And they sat in silence for a long while.
“Hector,” Andromeda said softly, “Rana needs you, you need to let go now.”
Gently she remove Bex from his grasp and replaced her with his sleeping babe, “please, she already lost her mom…. Don’t leave her too. I don’t think my heart could bear another orphan today…..”
The baby cooed at him blinking it’s sleepy eyes. God she looked like her mother…… He loved her. Loved her so much it hurt, “I love you Rana.”
Her little baby fingers held to his and knew that if he hadn’t been before he was now twisted around her little finger. He was going to give her everything in the world. Unlike her mother she’d never have to know anything of pain, or darkness, or loneliness.
Some small part of him stitched himself back together….
“Daddy,” she smiled at him as he tried braiding her hair brush in mouth, “what was mommy like?”
He smiles gently spitting out the brush. To anyone else he’d have avoided the question, but his tender heart could deny his daughter nothing, “your mother was the most clever, funniest, bravest woman I ever met. We were in our fifth year at Hogwarts when we fell in love- or rather when I fell in love with her. We were fighting monsters in the forbidden forrest….”
He tells her the story again a small smile on his face the whole way through up till the end. He always hated endings.
“So you’re like a real knight in shining armor,” she says when he finishes, “I can’t wait till I’m old enough to fight monsters.”
“No monster fighting for you Coração,” he says sternly placing a small kiss upon her head, “leave that to me.”
She smiles at him with Bex’s beautiful eyes filled with happiness, and presses a kiss to his cheek, “love you daddy.”
“Love you too Rana, love you too.” Tagging: @scribbleries @i-dare-you-to-call-me-becca @elenaroberts @heleneplays @weasleyismyking540  @ goddessofsleep
