Elrond hides from the stars, at first. Morgoth's hazy corruption hid the sky, at Amon Ereb, and the Feanorians didn't spend much time outside at night anyway– it was dangerous, even for hardened warriors.
Maedhros and Maglor taught them about the stars of course, they were determined to give E&E education befitting of elvish princes, and no such education could be complete without thorough studies of both astronomy and the elvish star lore from the days of Cuivienen. Still, while they could chart the course of any star across the sky, and tell the tale of any constellation, E&E rarely actually got to see the stars.
They could, on rare nights when the smog wasn't so bad, see Gil-Estel, brightest of them all, faintly shining through the haze. They knew what it was. They didn't know what to think about it. The Feanorians didn't like discussing it, so E&E didn't either.
But then, Elrond and Elros left the Feanorians. Maedhros and Maglor sent them away from just about everyone and everything they'd ever known. They came to Gil-Galad's camp as traumatized children who were treated as objects of curiosity, veneration, even suspicion. Eyes follow them everywhere, and their gaze is never neutral– always approving or disapproving, angry or joyful, awed or fearful.
Gil-Galad's camp, guarded by Maiarin soldiers, is nearly free of Morgoth's corruption. For the first time, E&E see the light of the sun and moon in their full glory. They also see Gil-Estel, burning brightly against the dark sky; no faint light.
Elrond doesn't like it. He feels like Gil-Estel is watching him. When he tries to explain this to Gil-Galad, he's met with sympathy– of course Earendil is watching over him. But Gil-Galad doesn't understand.
Elrond hasn't gotten used to being watched, being evaluated, at Gil-Galad's camp. He'd never felt that way at Amon Ereb– where there had been far fewer elves and his presence had quickly become normal. All those elves watching him now? Viscerally uncomfortable. And the thought of the father he barely remembers being another set of eyes judging him is unbearable. After all, what if Earendil doesn't like what he sees?

My brain is consumed by the way that Elrond is Elwing/Doriath's heir and Elros is Earendil/Gondolin's heir. How Elrond chose the fate of the Elves like Elwing before him, while Elros chose mortality, the path Earendil's heart actually favored. How Elrond's name means 'star-dome', named so in Elwing's dim memory of Doriath, and he builds what is essentially a refugee community like the Havens of Sirion. Elros's name, on the other hand, means 'star-foam' and his path ultimately led him to the Sea, as did his father's(and Earendil's father before him), following Gil-Estel to the place that would become Numenor.

Just thinking about Galadriel giving Frodo the phial with Earendil's light in it.
Galadriel whose brother once fought Sauron and died in the dark giving Frodo who is setting out to the heart of Sauron's power the light of Silmaril that Beren and Finrod set off to rescue; that Beren and Luthien recovered from the heart of Morgoth's power against all the odds because Finrod and his faithful ten kept Beren alive long enough for Luthien to rescue him.
That phial that protects them from the spawn of Ungoliant who once desired to consume all light and especially that of the Silmarils. The phial that Sam uses to help rescue Frodo and baffle the Watchers of a dark tower that was once good but had been taken and turned to evil by Sauron like Tol-in-Gaurhoth.

item: collection of Númenorean art titled (variations on) “The Ascension of Azrubêl” through the centuries, shifting over time from depicting Eärendil as receiving the Silmaril from Varda, to receiving it from Elwing, to crowning himself with it by his own hands.

After he is sent back to Middle Earth, Glorfindel starts talking to the stars. He spends nights and night looking up at the sky and telling of his daily life, how he became friend with Elrond, how he acts as an honorary uncle for the twins and Arwen. He tells all the little joys of the Hidden Valley and the games he comes up with the children, and the long discussions he has with Elrond.
Nobody pays much attention to it past the first few nights because, surely, a re-embodied hero from the First Age is allowed to be a bit strange.
But Elrond notices a pattern in the nights Glorfindel spends talking to the stars. And that he doesn’t speak to all the stars but always one, the brightest of the sky. Gil Estel. Eärendil. And he remembers that his father was born in Gondolin, that Glorfindel probably helped to raise him just as he helps raising the twins and Arwen.
One night, Elrond decides to join Glorfindel in the garden, and he asks him about this father he can’t remember. His father who gave up everything for the ones he loved and now gives hope to Middle Earth. And Glorfindel tells of a golden haired boy, kind as a summer afternoon and with a bright laugh that echoed on the white stone of Gondolin. A little boy who dreamed of the sea and made small boats with twigs and leaves to sail across the fountains. A boy he never got to see grow up but turned into a brave and loving man who had children of his own, who then had children of their own. And Glorfindel tells how lucky he feels to be able to look after some of them.

The thing that draws me most to this fandom, and the things that makes it unique, is that by the mere nature of the works we love, everyone's Arda is different. And not just in the usual headcanon-y ways that are typical of every story, but even down to important plot and characterization points.
Who is Gil-Galad? What is the Oath and what does it have power to do? What really is the Dagor Dagorath? How do the Laws Of The Universe work?
And beyond that- what parts of HoME do you pick and choose? LaCE? Does anyone try and work with Tolkien's horrendous math? Have you taken parts of your Arda from older or other worlds, with the Cottage of Lost Play and the exile of the Gnomes?
Have you given names to the wives and daughters? What do they mean- who are they? Mother-names or father-names for those who only had one?
I just really love how even when two interpretations of the same world seem utterly incompatible, they aren't. I'd love to see other additions/headcanons!

Elrond’s Stars Halo
A bit more on his halo. It stays for a while after being “summoned”, but doesn’t glow much as glowing actually consumes his strength, and if not in a dire situation it can just sit there on his head like an ornament. (Like how the light of Eärendil given to Frodo by Galadriel can just sit in his pocket and not glow when not needed) Usually it takes several hours, or sometimes just a nap to get rid of it. This is him letting someone (Gil-Galad, I’ll assume) examine it after a battle. Now, the stars on the halo actually represents the ones he had lost. Like Eärendil in the middle, Elwing and Elros right next to him, and the two octagram stars are obviously the two Fëanorions. So as he loses more in his life, the number of stars on the halo increases. They become a part of him and will stay on his halo, grant him strength when it is most needed.
(So Gil-Galad also became a part of it later lol.)(And Celebrían.)(And Arwen.)(And Aragorn.)
By the time of him sailing to Valinor it looks like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(The Aragorn one is the same as the Elros one, only smaller.)
(Just to clarify “lost” isn’t necessarily “dead”. The moment Arwen and Elros made the choice to be mortal they were “lost” to him. The moment Celecrían decided to sail west she was “lost” to him.)

Me spreading rumor:
I think Angband produced air pollution and you cannot see blue sky in day or stars at night in areas around Angband
Imagine over the years the air quality in Beleriand just got worse and worse
I mean, Morgoth hated Manwe and Varda did he
(I think he had separate specific ways to destroy/twist/mock each Valar’s artwork
How did the dark creatures who born and grew up in Angband react when they saw stars for the first time in their life, likely when they marched away from Angband to conquer and kill and spread terror
Did they fear the stars because the stars looked like those lights on the dark king’s crown
Or did they still got attracted by them, the light faraway that did not make them hurt? The sun burnt them but the stars, the stars were friendly and the stars were just there
If some of them wanted to run away and hide away and away from the terror of their master, did the friendly lights guide their ways?
When Gil-Estel appeared in the sky it was a star that you could even see in Angband through the thick smog and gray clouds
When thralls looked up they could see a star
A reminder
There was the star that was once stolen and trapped and enslaved by evil but the star broke loose and now was high above the sky
And that was not the only star out there over the clouds, maybe their sights got blocked by the dark and horror of Angband but over the clouds there were all the stars and they were bright and never touched by the self-claimed king
And the stars had always been there and would always be there, away from the land away from the hands of the Evil
The thralls knew the Evil could take them kill them use them or even twist them but the Evil could not have the stars
Was that a relief was that enough
Or that was not enough but it was good and the stars would always be there even after the land falling beneath the sea

Underrated Eldritch Peredhel: Earendil. Specifically, I love Earendil because he kind of starts out "normal," just being the child of an elf and a man. But then he marries the part-Maiarin Elwing, who's great-grandmother Melian affected her husband so much that he's described as being like a Maia lord afterwards. He steps foot on Aman, which in some of Tolkien's texts also physically changes him. He murders a giant dragon and doesn't die afterwards. He's nearly constantly exposed to the Silmaril. Like you know how Aman's light is supposed to be too much for mortals. And the SIlmarils have the remnants of Aman's light. And Earendil has mortal blood.
This is more headcanon but I also believe that no incarnate would naturally be able to do what Earendil does, sailing through the sky and void, possibly fighting the unknowable creatures in it. Varda had to give Earendil some power for him to be able to be Gil-Estel. I've also seen something about him being gifted wings but I forget where.
Just, imagine Earendil, the young sailor just setting out from Sirion, a man with elvish grace, or an elf with mannish features. And then imagine Gil-Estel, the warrior clad in dragon-scale armor, who's lived with the Silmaril for so long that the light shines from within him now. Who burns with Varda's hallowed radiance, so much that the creatures of the void can't even bear to look upon him. Who trails stardust and smiles with teeth that are just a bit too sharp. Who looks more in place aside Tilion and Arien than he does among elves or men.
I also firmly believe that Elrond was able to visit Earendil on the Vingelot– visiting a flying ship is much easier when you can turn into a bird, after all– and that the magic there also affected him, but that's a different post...

Parallels
Or
Seeing Patterns in Things that Aren’t There
Part 29
Amidst The Innumerable Stars
1. “Look. Toa Lhikan’s Spirit Star. Each Toa has one. As long as it burns in the night sky, Toa Lhikan remains alive.” - Vakama. Bionicle: Legends of Metru Nui. (2004)
2. “Now fair and marvellous was that vessel made, and it was filled with a wavering flame, pure and bright; and Eärendil the Mariner sat at the helm, glistening with dust of elven-gems, and the Silmaril was bound upon his brow. Far he journeyed in that ship, even into the starless voids; but most often was he seen at morning or at evening, glimmering in sunrise or sunset, as he came back to Valinor from voyages beyond the confines of the world.
. . .
Now when first Vingilot was set to sail in the seas of heaven, it rose unlooked for, glittering and bright; and the people of Middle-earth beheld it from afar and wondered, and they took it for a sign, and called it Gil-Estel, the Star of High Hope.”
- The Silmarillion (1977). - Quenta Silmarillion. Of the Voyage of Earendil and the War of Wrath.
3. “What are you made of?” - Lauren Arnoldson.
“Good People.” - Manticore (Constellation).
- The Monument Mythos: Season Three. Finale. FREEDOMFOREVER (2023)
Kind of speaks for itself.
But this post covers numerous examples of people living on as or becoming stars in one way or another.
In the Bionicle universe, Toa were represented by Spirit Stars in the sky of the GSR. Perhaps more akin to beacons in hindsight.
Lhikan’s spirit star remains while he lives. Until he sacrifices himself to save Vakama. And the Toa Metru receive their own stars shortly afterwards.
Earendil and his Silmaril become a star in the sky after he and his wife Elwing work with the Valar and their host to save the world from Morgoth in the War of Wrath.
The Angel Crown, Freedom (and Nina & Thomas Crawford by extension), and Everett Arnoldson merge to form the Perfect Union, sacrificing themselves to destroy the Martian Serpent and save the world.
In doing so they transcend and become stars, forming the Manticore constellation.
Make of this what you will.

Okay, I guess I’m doing this! Part 2 of Melkor in the Void, aka I mess around in Procreate as long as I don’t have to try to draw people. Based on a post by @curufiin. Featuring Eärendil this time (by way of his silmaril). Original idea and part 1 here.
Tumblr media
(I discovered the flare brush btw. That’s the only reason he looks this good)
I have no idea how far my art skills will take this idea, but whatever. It’s good practice!

"Hey I wasn't going to say anything" Elladan said Haldir face plamed
"You are like the worst person to have on this job" Haldir muttered
"How, I am the best" Elladan said shooting his glare to Haldir
"You have no filter and spoil anything and everything" Haldir said
"Thats why you two are here" Elladan said Elrohir sighed and turned his attention to Estel
"What do you want to do today, Ada says we can do anything within reason" Elrohir said
"I wanna see those Centaurs" Estel said
" We can go looking for them, we may not find them but we can try, come on lets go get the horses ready" Haldir said
Lindir watched as the four walked to the stable, and quickly walked into the library "They are leaving to find Centaurs in the forest" Lindir said

"They aren't married yet Lindir" Arwen said
"I think they secretly are but never bothered to tell anyone" Gildor said
Tumblr media
By the Time they got back the sun had set, the lights the house gave off were ominous against the fog which had gathered with the dusk, it looked as if orcs had ransacked the place, Haldir glanced to Elladan
"Either they did a really good job or orcs did come when we were away chasing centaurs" Haldir whispered
"I doubt it was actually orcs" Elrohir whispered as Estel ran to the house, Elladan chased him the other two stayed further back they soon heard the screams of the others
"Ada how dare you scare us like that" Elladan said
"I was not trying to" Elrond said Elrohir hmmed
"Says the man with fake blood all over him" Haldir said
"Glorfindel spilled it and it landed on me, Gildor and Erestor" Elrond said Estel was soon in Elronds arms having the elves scared him as he went in search of Lindir who had left to his Talan after decorating.

The Minstrel and the Star you say??
An incomplete list of the things the light in the sky is the Maglor Fëanorion, once Kánafinwë Makalaurë, in no particular order:
the other end of a leash ever dragging him closer via a spiked collar he set around his own throat
(to please his father)
(out of family solidarity)
(in his own well-justified rage and grief)
(except it is in the sky and he is on the ground and he will never ever be able to get closer)
the light of the last true peace he knew
the light of the last true joy he feels like he knew
the light of a lost innocence
the last shred of his father in this world
the last memory of his happy family in this world
the thing his father died for
the thing his brothers all died for
the thing his father sacrificed them all for
eternally out of reach
a reminder that the Valar will never let the House of Fe4anor have just one little thing
safely out of reach
too holy for his bloodsoaked hands to touch; he knows this exquisitely; the burn never heals and never stops hurting as though it was fresh
once, hope that help was coming
once, hope that they were not wholly forgotten nor abandoned
once, hope that someone, impossibly, survived
(survived Beleriand)
(survived the Sons of Fëanor)
the father of children whom he came to love as his own
the father of children whom he stole over their mother's might-as-well-have-been corpse
the son, grandson, and great-grandson of people he abandoned to die on the Ice
the lord of a people whom he attacked and slaughtered
(who were his own people too, by more distant blood and kinship)
(who were his own people too, but promises made to guard all lands south of the Siege)
(who brought it upon themselves by not giving up the jewel)
the reason his friends are all dead
the reason his loyal followers are all dead
(the sibling of) the thing that killed Maedhros specifically
what Men on the beach sing songs to, when he sometimes creeps close enough to hear them
what Elves on the beach sing songs to, when he more rarely creeps close enough to hear them
what his attention is drawn to every night by the leash still wrapped like a noose around his throat
what he sings songs to, as he does the only thing he was ever truly good at and sings
(as he fulfills his last and final duty of ensuring that the deeds they did shall be the matter of song until the end of Arda)
((a duty to his father))
((a duty to the story and Song in which they live))
((in which they are trapped))
((in which they trapped themselves))
(as he tries desperately to ensure that nobody will ever make the same terrible mistakes)
(as he mourns in the only way he truly knows)
(as he rages in the only way he truly knows)
(as he survives in the only way he can imagine; and he is far too used to surviving to simply stop now. it would be so much more restful to stop now, and he cannot)
the only regular companion he has for 6,400 years
the only person left he ever sees who might remember the things of which he sings - the blood, the blades, even the bright days before all was lost and hope still reigned
hope
(for others)
it moves across the sky, every night but also in longer trends. mind in the past of which he sings, he follows the slow sweeps north and south, and north again. it tarries most in the north. sometimes the only thing he remembers of the present is that he mustn't be found in it (for fear of punishment? as mercy to others?), so he hides, but he follows the star. the only other part of him always resent is the leash of an oath; he lets it lead him once more
(the light above is safe from all the evils of the world; there is no harm it can do)
sometimes he imagines it leads him out of storms, or into safe resting spots. when he's more lucid, he knows this is a delusion
the only person he consistently sees for 6,400 years, two Ages of the World
((a friend))
a promise that there is still light and peace and goodness somewhere far away
(a promise that there is still light and peace and goodness right where he left it so long ago)
rest and resolution forever out of reach
a guide to a new home not for him
a guide to an old home no longer for him
overheard from a sailor: an eternal guide and friend on the open sea, savior of ships otherwise lost
told by an elderly blind woman who thought at first that he was an injured panther: the last thing she could see, before her eyes went completely
overheard from a migrating people who came by the sea every few years: a hero, a cursed sailor, a blessed sailor, a very lost fish, a last hope, a gift
when he drift out of memory, idly following the star as best he can save into the sea, it is most often because he's nearly stumbled into people gain, almost as though the star is leading him to them
(a busybody)
(but it also happens when he's not following the star; avoiding people is most of why he wakes up)
(it gets easier with practice, to be close enough to be heard (or how will they learn from their mistakes?) (or how will the song be truly sung without an audience?) but not close enough to be found)
(and, selfishly, singing keeps the ghosts away, because if they're memories then they can't be ghosts)
a ghost
a star, and elves have always loved stars
salvation
(for others)
forgiveness (because they were forgiven, right; everyone else got to go home, it was just the two of them who refused the last bargain-)
(for others)
a symbol of how it was all in vain
a symbol of how it was all worth it
the only constant for two Ages of the world
forever (safely) out of reach
forever (bitterly) out of reach
forever (yearningly) out of reach
forever (lonely) out of reach
an audience
convenient lighting on uneven footing
for others
Thing Eärendil is, in no particular order:
an audience, to all of the above, able to stop listening if he wants but always able to hear if he wishes. able to see if he's close enough and the clouds aren't thick
compassionate
prone to sympathy
la little bit lonely sometimes as well
