As an intrinsic part of their Mortal heritage, I like to think that all the Half-Elven in Middle-earth have at one point in their lives (but most especially their youths) had a fairly unflattering haircut that they genuinely believed was the hottest shit ever:
Dior had a long feathered mullet that was a pure flex to show off how naturally full and voluminous his hair was. He only cut it once the twins were born and it became too much work to maintain while looking after two babies.
Elúred and Elúrin got their hands on an unattended bottle of hair dye when they were five and gave themselves skunk hair bangs that took months to wash out.
Elwing once experimented with teasing her curls into a big 80's hairdo because people told her how her father used to have big hair.
Eärendil had to cut his hair after a lice scare onboard one of Círdan's ships and went for a bowl cut that he thought would be quick and easy to do. Unfortunately, the bowl he used was a little too small and the high fringe made it look like he was wearing a small hat made out of hair. Idril had conniptions. Tuor managed to hold in his laughter until he could reach the privacy of an inner room. Elwing demonstrated the incredible power of love by both saying yes to his proposal and offering to neaten his fringe so that it at least looked a little less choppy.
Elrond stubbornly sported a man bun undercut for two whole years after he lost a bet with one of Maedhros' Mortal retainers and Maglor made a sighing comment about how he shouldn't worry because his hair would soon grow back out "nice again."
Elros gave himself curtained hair in solidarity with Elrond so that Maglor would get off his back, and kept it until the first time he commanded a war party and got good-naturedly ribbed to hell about looking like a 14 year old kid.
Like father like son, Elladan wore a rat tail for a few years after one of the Dunédain wagered he couldn't pull it off. He really couldn't, although he thought it looked great and was forever trying to do fancy styles with it until Elrohir staged a sibling intervention.
Elrohir maintained a buzzcut for nearly fifty years after his parents a little too amusedly said that he could do whatever he liked with his appearance now that he was of age.
Arwen went through a phase in her 200s where she dyed her hair with whatever colours she could get her hands on. The silver was very nice (Celeborn was extremely proud) and the blue highlights were interesting but still managed to work. She even made a decent ginger. However, the attempt at Arafinwëan gold just ended up a washed-out bleach blonde that is to date the only thing that has ever stunned Galadriel into utter speechlessness.
+Although not born Mortal, Lúthien spent a full Valinorean year with feathers instead of hair while trying to shape-shift into a nightingale. It actually made for quite an aesthetic when she took the time to preen them properly, but as she was far too busy running around having adventures with Daeron, the effect was more often ruffled bird's nest than sleek wings.

with my whole heart i truly think elwing/eärendil is the most sweepingly romantic ship in the legendarium. like. what if we were the only two people like us ever in the whole world yet by fate and chance and tragedy we found each other. what if we built a home and a life at the ends of the earth and against all odds it was good. what if we knew no help was coming. what if we chose to live anyway. what if i flew through the storm to find you. what if i knew you and held you even in another shape. what if you told me not to follow and i did. what if i let you make the choice for us both. what if you gave up even the touch of the world you loved so we could stay together. what if we saved that world but not for us. what if our love--for each other, for the world--was so strong that it rent the fabric of the universe. what then.

I was planning to finish this in time to honor father's day (here in Brazil) a few weeks ago, but life and a nervous breakdown got in the way, so here it is, my baby with his baby Elrond and baby Arwen! *.*
(Because I like to suffer, I chose to add Eärendil's light shining down on them because I wanted to convey Elrond's sadness for feeling so distant from his own father even though he's always present T.T)

Lúthien comes of age in safety and love. Her father rules in kindness and her mother shields the land from evil.
Dior comes of age in a time of unease. His father is strong and brave, his mother wise and bold, but the Fëanorians are a threat that ever hangs over his head.
Elwing comes of age in Valinor with her husband by her side and a trail of loss and woe behind them. Her sons are taken and her people are dead. The weight of responsibility is nearly enough to crush her.
Eluréd and Elurín do not come of age, they never had the chance.
Elrond and Elros come of age in a war zone. There is death and screaming, blood spills as often as rain. They have no parents, only each other. The world has never been safe for them. They know it never will be.
Elladan, Elrohir, and Arwen come of age in safety and love. Their mother is kind and wise, their father shields the land from evil.

The Silmarillion ultimate playlist
It’s the time of Spotify wrap-ups and whatnot and this gave me an idea: let’s make a giant, collaborative playlist for the Silmarillion!
Drop the songs that make you think of a specific character, your OCs, relationship, event, place, or just gives you major Silm Vibes in the reblogs and tags. Put links to them, write essays about these songs if you want, or just reblog to share further, but the goal is to have fun and discover as many songs as possible.
You can share any song or musical piece you want, no matter the genre or language, the only rule is that it can’t be a song by Tolkien nor a track from the LotR movies or musical, nor the Hobbit or any musical adaptation of Tolkien’s works (I see you Finrod Rock Opera. I will listen to you one day).
Anyways, here are my songs, and the link to the collaborative playlist:
Eärendil, Starwing: Sailboat of Mine - Eurielle & Mario Grigorov
Eöl, Nan Elmoth: Hotel California - Eagles
Aredhel: Touch the Sky - Brave; I want to Break Free - Queen;
Nerdanel, Anairë and Eärwen: Friends will be Friends - Queen
Findis: Ave Maria - Franz Schubert (specifically sung by Maria Callas)
Morgoth: Back on the Throne - Firewind
Lúthien: Savage Daughter - Sarah Hester Ross; Queen of King - Alessandra
Maglor’s Gap: I wanna be in the Cavalry - Colm R. McGuinness (both the original and the reprise)
Maglor: Requiem, Lacrimosa - W.A. Mozart
Fingon/Maedhros: Princes of the Universe - Queen
Túrin Turambar: Live and Die by the Sword - Firewind
Fëanor (from the moment he swears the Oath to his death, but specifically Alqualondë and Losgar): Wars of Age - Firewind
Amarië: I will survive - Gloria Gaynor
Eluréd and Elurín: Erlkönjg - Franz Schubert; Come Little Children - Hocus Pocus (cover by Erutan)
Finwë: Sin - Lia Marie Johnson
Helcaraxë: Rise from the Ashes - Firewind
Nirnaeth Arnoediad: Bloodstained Ground - Eluvetie
Sons of Fëanor: Threefold Death - Eluvetie
Edain/ end of the War of Wrath vibes: Prologue - Eluvetie
Fingolfin: Last of the Lords - Battlelore
Tuor/Idril: Song of the Sea - Nolwen Leroy
Maglor, Elrond and Elros: The Magic Lullaby - Eurielle
Thingol/Melian: Cat People (Putting out Fire) - David Bowie
Nolofinwëans: Hey Brother - Avicii
Celegorm and Curufin in Nargothrond: (Do)minion - Eluvetie
As you can see, this playlist is completely random, jumping from lullaby to death metal to 80’s pop without rhyme nor reason. It’s just a giant melting pot of Vibes
And now, it’s your turn to play!

Hey, I’ve got a quick question for everyone. I know that it’s generally agreed upon that Eärendil had shore leave during the day. He could return to Valinor during the day and spend time with his beloved wife for whom he forsook the gift of Men.
……Has he been able to take a break since the world was rounded? That’s how planets work, it’s always night somewhere on the globe. And if Aman was separated from the rounded world, has he even been able to see Elwing since then? Has anyone come to relieve Eärendil since S.A. 3319? I have concerns.

Tolkien's aside about how only descendants of the royal family such as the Stewards were free to use Quenya names in Gondor is interesting in multiple ways, but it reinforces an implication that was always pretty clear but often overlooked: the royal family could and did have descendants who were not considered royalty themselves.
We know this because the Stewards are, explicitly, not royal and not considered valid heirs of the line of Elendil, but they are descendants of Elendil and Elros, and this is part of why King Minardil granted the Stewardship to his kinsman Húrin of Emyn Arnen.
We don't know when or how Húrin's house (whatever it was previously called) split off from the royal house, but we do know it happened. Ergo, the listed members of the royal houses are not the only descendants of Elros in Third Age Middle-earth. (The Stewards, while clearly an important family, seem unlikely to be the only ones in this situation.)
The descendants of Elros as a group do seem to form a relatively select group within the Dúnedain (Tolkien notes that some Dúnedain are bearded, but not descendants of Elros such as Aragorn and Denethor, so not all Dúnedain are Elrosian). Aragorn's descent from Elros is special—but it's not as special as it's often treated.
And now I'm just thinking of how Elros's scattered Third Age descendants could never know him, but they could look up at Eärendil in the sky and wonder if he can see them, if he knows them, if he cares.

"But Finrod walks with Finarfin his father beneath the trees in Eldamar"
I think it's no surprise to my followers who pay attention to my silm posting that I love Finrod Felagund's character, but this is the line that sticks with me heavily. Within the Quenta Silmarillion, it is told that all of those Ñoldor caught within the Doom of Mandos and of the Silmarils will "yearn for [their] bodies, and find little pity", which is often taken to mean that none of those who left Valinor would be granted the possibility of returning to physical form, to live in the bliss of Aman (though arguments can clearly be made that only those who participated in the kinslaying were under such a doom, but I choose to ignore that). That's what makes this line so much more impactful to me, along with a more important facet; it's placement in the chapter.
Just 2 pages earlier, at his death, Finrod says it will be long before he is seen again amongst his people, perhaps believing he will not be granted a bodily form until such a time as the rest of the Ñoldor would be. He dies in the darkness of his corrupted tower, and is mourned at length by Beren until Lúthien his love arrives and rouses him, and together their hope is kindled again as the sun rises (a very common theme in Tolkien's works). They honour and bury Finrod atop the island, a tomb to be unchanged until the War of Wrath caused upheaval in all of Beleriand
It's here that this line comes in. His tomb is inviolate until all the land is, but he himself walks with his father, the only of Finwë's sons to remain in Valinor, and that says so many things.
He is one of few, or perhaps the only, Ñoldorin exile to be gifted bodily rebirth. He surpassed the Doom of Mandos (see my 2nd link in paragraph 1)
His father welcomes him home and forgives his leaving
No matter the state of his grave, Felagund is himself unmarred
No timeline is given for Finrod's bodily resurrection, but I choose to believe it is before the end of the First Age (and the fandom wiki agrees, tolkien gateway being more vague), for no other reason than Eärendil. It is because of Finrod, his assistance of and sacrifice for Beren, that the man of Bëor lives long enough to be united with Lúthien in the Quest, and they, along with Huan, are able to retrieve the Silmaril that Eärendil brings to Aman. I consider that Finrod is likely unaware of the success of the Quest, given it seems the rest of Valinor was (or at least they waited for a plea from Middle-Earth before acting on anything). Imagine his wonder, his pride, and his joy, at seeing that not only was the quest successful, but here, 80 years after he died, he sees Beren and Lúthien's grandson-in-law bearing the jewel. I wonder what he would have said to Amarië his love, if he would have remarked in joyous tears that the horrors and the death that led him back into Aman were not faced in vain. I wonder if, taking up his weapon to participate in the War of Wrath, he either sat a moment in sorrow, or in hope, or in some other emotion, considering what lay ahead of him, and as he came home afterwards with many of his kinsfolk, what he felt as he came to the bliss that would last until the changing of the world.
No matter his feelings on the Wars, what his experiences are and what he goes through after his resurrection, we know this:
Finrod walks with Finarfin his father beneath the trees of Eldamar
