Silmarillion concept that has me gnawing on the bars of my enclosure today: all of Elrond's parents are terrifying eldritch beings actually.
Maedhros, with white fire pouring from his eyes, taken from the jaws of death anything but unchanged. Some whisper that he's not elvish anymore, not since his captivity. They can never quite agree on what that makes him, exactly.
Maglor, with a voice no elf ever should've had, beautiful and terrible and powerful enough to shake the mountains. Sailors along Middle-Earth's west coast whisper of a sea wraith, some horrible siren that roams the beaches on the darkest nights.
Earendil, a man made an elf, a star, a maia if some are to be believed. Slayer of dragons, guardian of the void. Someone who's spent so along around the Silmaril and the Ainur that some of that power lives within him now.
Elwing, a skin-changer with a voice and a laugh that sound like they were taken from a bird's throat. A witch who lives in a lighthouse, where the animals flock and the plants grow strangely. None of the Amanyar would admit to being scared of her, but few will venture in sight of her odd little realm.
And then there's Elrond, ring-bearer, Lord of Rivendell, kind as a summer.
Well, let's just say it probably helps that no one is expecting him to be normal. Or elvish. Or entirely comprehensible.

"Out of the Great Sea to Middle-earth I am come.”
I was inspired to draw this when Clamavi de Profundis released their cover of the Oath of Elendil, but then I just left it to gather dust in my folders for months loll As messy as it is, I’ve decided to post it anyway because I really do like it (though I wish I had the energy to clean it up more).
Anyways, for context, it’s yet another scenario with Maglor and Tar-Minyatur! Maglor was wandering around the beach, only for Elros to sneak up on him and bring him back to Numenor. As for how Maglor was caught off-guard, I imagine Elros used a trading ship that Maglor was tracking in the hopes of doing some trade with humans, and he didn’t expect Elros to be there.
Then again, I think it’d be funnier if Elros appeared out of nowhere in his fancy king’s ship, and Maglor just stood on the beach staring at him like a dumb crab XDD

Crack fic where Maedhros and Maglor have no concept of half elven ages
__
"We can't take them back with us," Maedhros said.
"They're just children though, they won't survive on their own!"
"That's exactly the point!"
"What do you mean? I know children won't be much use in the fortress, but we can feed two spare mouths."
"They're far too young for us to be able to care for them."
"Come on, they look like they're at least twenty. I'm sure they know calculus and how to spin by now, even if they're not yet tall and strong enough for more."
"You haven't been keeping track of diplomatic news, or indeed of time at all. We sacked Doriath not three decades ago, and Elwing their mother was an infant then."
"Humans grow fast." Maglor shrugged. "She obviously grew enough to have children, and within a year or two."
"Gil-Galad mentioned that Elwing gave birth to twin boys in a letter only six years ago. And before you ask, I'm sure she didn't also have older children, these were very clearly the first heirs for the Iathrim."
"What? But - they're so tall!"
"Like you say, men grow fast. They grow unevenly though, without enough time to learn everything properly. Those boys may not even know their letters, or how to identify pewter from lead."
"At six years old, what do they even eat? Celebrimbor nursed until he was nearly eight!"
"They might be old enough to survive weaning, but I'm not sure, and we have no one breastfeeding in our camp at the moment, without anyone born since the Nirnaeth."
"I've heard of using cow's milk or sheep's milk to feed babies, rather than just making cheese. Do you think they'd tolerate it?"
"Maybe, but we can't be sure. It's better to leave them here with all the other people who's homes we destroyed; there were enough babies wailing during the battle someone can surely take in the princes."
"Perhaps, if anyone finds them in the next day. Most people fled the city, and I doubt they'll return before the fires die down."
"I'm not going to take in infants just to let them starve."
"Me neither! But I can ask them if they're weaned. They understand Sindarin, and talk, at least enough to call for their mother."
"A child that young will just say they eat nothing but honey and cake, if you let them choose their diet."
"If they know they like cake, that means they can eat solids, and I'll give them normal food."
"Fine. You can ask them, and if they're weaned they'll survive as well with us as any where else."
"And if they're not?"
"I send a couple scouts to follow the sounds of screaming children and deliver two more."
"Maedhros!"
"What? I can't bring their mother back, nor can my most imperious command make someone lactate."
"So you're giving up?"
"No, I already told you my plan." Maedhros sighed. "And I will send a few people to look for goats or ewes we can take with us. We already sacked the city; might as well loot it."
"You're convinced to make everything the most horrible possible."
"Excuse me for being pessimistic when our brothers just died for nothing."
"Fine, I'm going."
"Good."

For the pose prompt: kidnap fam making a snowelf? That'd be so cute!
Tumblr media
Here they are!!! Mae and Mags obvs do not need to be wearing gloves or cloaks, but the twins would refuse to wear their mittens and coats otherwise so they have to be good examples.
This was so fun and outrageously cute. Thank you for sending it in Jaz!!!!

You know what would really kill you with either tears or laughter?
All those “Unhealthy Kidnap Dads” fics but with M&M surviving via Divine Peredhel Intervention. So now M&M, who are codependently attached to each other in despair and love in equal measure, have to live confined in an apartment or something within Lindon.
And of course, the elves have to keep an eye on The Kinslayers™️, right? And Gil-Galad is demanding at least a status report once a week about The Kinslayers™️
Anyway so M&M, as is their way, are still doing their unhealthy bullshit to each other and the Lindon Elves are slowly but surely starting to intervene whenever a despairing Maedhros snarls at a hopeful Maglor, or an angry Maglor throws a wine glass at a solemn Maedhros.
Eventually, the Lindon Elves are straight up like “We need an actual mental health professional before we put these two grown-ass elves in time-out”.
And Gil-Galad, of course, is being harassed daily by Elrond about the difference between Sickness and Evil, until he just grants Elrond’s request for a mind healer (or the closest thing they have to one at the time).
Anyway, the summarized concept of this is that M&M makes the Lindon Elves see them as people not because they wish to die, but because they so obviously live in despair.

"For Maglor took pity upon Elros and Elrond, and he cherished them, and love grew between them, as little might be thought; but Maglor's heart was sick and weary with the burden of the dreadful oath."
Such a small footnote about the relationship between Maglor and the twins that makes me wish for more detail. Did the heavy burden of the oath make him more reserved towards his young wards? Did Maglor try to ignore the oath entirely and devote himself to the care of Elros and Elrond as well as the light they brought into his life? What led the twins to trust Maglor despite everything he had done? And what of Maedhros? Did he distance himself, unable to ignore all of the blood on his hands? Did his failure to save the twin sons of Dior affect him at all? Did he try to be a caring guardian like his brother? There is a lot of potential for interesting stories here.

when celebrian meets maglor she's openly furious with him and everyone assumes it's for a kinslaying/kidnapping related reason
except elrond, mortified, who knows it's because maglor made the mistake of teaching him the noldor equivalent of "the song that never ends" at age 8 as a way to annoy maedhros and elrond made the mistake of teaching it to his sons
you have not known suffering until you have experienced the world's most overexcited peredhil twins shout-singing at the top of their lungs at 3 AM refusing to go to bed
celebrian is willing to forgive a lot but some crimes are unforgivable

Elrond hides from the stars, at first. Morgoth's hazy corruption hid the sky, at Amon Ereb, and the Feanorians didn't spend much time outside at night anyway– it was dangerous, even for hardened warriors.
Maedhros and Maglor taught them about the stars of course, they were determined to give E&E education befitting of elvish princes, and no such education could be complete without thorough studies of both astronomy and the elvish star lore from the days of Cuivienen. Still, while they could chart the course of any star across the sky, and tell the tale of any constellation, E&E rarely actually got to see the stars.
They could, on rare nights when the smog wasn't so bad, see Gil-Estel, brightest of them all, faintly shining through the haze. They knew what it was. They didn't know what to think about it. The Feanorians didn't like discussing it, so E&E didn't either.
But then, Elrond and Elros left the Feanorians. Maedhros and Maglor sent them away from just about everyone and everything they'd ever known. They came to Gil-Galad's camp as traumatized children who were treated as objects of curiosity, veneration, even suspicion. Eyes follow them everywhere, and their gaze is never neutral– always approving or disapproving, angry or joyful, awed or fearful.
Gil-Galad's camp, guarded by Maiarin soldiers, is nearly free of Morgoth's corruption. For the first time, E&E see the light of the sun and moon in their full glory. They also see Gil-Estel, burning brightly against the dark sky; no faint light.
Elrond doesn't like it. He feels like Gil-Estel is watching him. When he tries to explain this to Gil-Galad, he's met with sympathy– of course Earendil is watching over him. But Gil-Galad doesn't understand.
Elrond hasn't gotten used to being watched, being evaluated, at Gil-Galad's camp. He'd never felt that way at Amon Ereb– where there had been far fewer elves and his presence had quickly become normal. All those elves watching him now? Viscerally uncomfortable. And the thought of the father he barely remembers being another set of eyes judging him is unbearable. After all, what if Earendil doesn't like what he sees?

Here are my paintings for this year’s @tolkienrsb! The first one is my initial submission; the rest were extra paintings for my lovely author, TheChasm <333
I’ll be adding the promo post for the fic sometime soon, so I won’t mention what these paintings are about quite yet. I think y’all will be able to guess, in any case! XDD

AU where the Third Kinslaying takes place a decade later
It doesn't truly change anything, not as far as the history books record things. Some of the Feanorian soldiers turncoat and defend the city, but not enough to save Sirion. The youngest sons of Feanor die in battle. Elwing is cornered in her tower, and jumps with a Silmaril. The remaining sons of Feanor take custody of her sons. Ulmo rescues Elwing and guides her bird-self to Earendil; Earendil and Elwing got to Valinor; Earendil pleads with the Valar. The arc of Fate continues unabated.
In other ways, it changes everything. Elrond and Elros are not children when the attack comes, to hide in a closet or cave in hopes their mother will return. Instead they are youths, not yet as wise or strong as some but nearly grown.
The princes take part in the battle to defend their city.
It's both of their first fight outside the practice yards. Elrond has gone hunting before and shot a deer, but Elros has never spilled the blood of another living being, not orc or elf or man.
He does so today, his sword travelling smoothly in the motion he's drilled a hundred times.
Elrond fights on horseback at first, riding down the street and firing arrows at anyone wearing Feanor's star, trampling down the invaders and moving on before he can see what's left behind and vomit in horror. But when the battle progresses into the palace he abandons his stallion at the gates, rushing to try and save his family.
Elros watches his mother jump from across a room crowded with combatants. Elrond is still four floors down, but he sees the gull emerge from the spray with a loud cry, far larger and brighter than any natural bird.
They do find each other in the battle, and fight side by side. But slowly the twins are driven back, before an army both more experienced and more numerous.
Elrond and Elros manage to retreat to the buttery and block the door, the thick stone walls that keep the beer cool also preventing anyone from reaching them. It's a very defensible room, with only one entrance to guard.
They are trapped. They know it.
Neither says it aloud.
They simply sit and wait, and hope the invaders will leave once they realize the prize they came to the city for is no longer achievable.
(Maedhros is not about to leave two young princes behind whose city was destroyed, will want revenge, would be a wonderful rallying point for the people of Sirion, and are two young to know the wisdom of not starting fights without a tactical benefit. Better to deal with it now, while the city is in chaos, than to wait and have an army come after the Feanorians in a year or a decade.)
(The only question is if the door can be breached, or if the Feanorians will need to starve the twins out. By which time reinforcements will likely have arrived to Sirion, so it becomes a matter of either defending the ransacked city or burning the palace with the boys inside it.)
After an hour or two, someone does think of negotiating, offering to spare the princes lives and leave the city not any further destroyed, and taking the boys captive.
(Tell me, what prince of the Noldor is infamous for going to a parlay under false pretenses? How much history and diplomacy do you think twins raised to rule a kingdom know?)

Something something Adult Elrond wanting his daughter to stay with him and be safe and alive even if she may be unhappy, and manipulating his daughter into making a huge decision to fit that by not telling her his entire Vision
Something something Tiny Elrond and Tiny Elros being somewhat-forced to listen to Maglor & Maedhros, because the brothers wanted them to be safe and alive even if not happy
Something something generational trauma and Adult Elrond accidentally treating his children like he and his brother were treated as children sometimes
Something something Arwen knowing how much her dad loves her and loves him back anyways, even though she had to break free time of his safety eventually to go her own path.
Something something Arwen being less Luthien-Reborn and more reflection of her uncle Elros (who broke his fathers’ rules more than his brother ever did)
Something something Elrond being more Maglor than Thingol, and Celebrian more Maedhros than Melian
M&M letting the twins go in the end for their own safety. Elrond letting his daughter go in the end for her own happiness.
