I will never understand how in a story that so clearly explores themes of dominance, personhood, and the struggle for autonomy that y’all think Gale is just some guy who can’t get over his ex.

There’s a saying “if they’re legally untouchable, they’re ethically unfuckable.” Meaning that if someone has the ability to hurt you without consequence, a relationship with them will always be inherently abusive. Gale couldn’t have said no to Mystra even if he wanted to, because you don’t say no to gods or kings without the very real possibility of retribution. Even if they don’t intentionally try to hurt you, you can’t hold that much one sided power without collateral damage.

And the thing is, this isn’t some hypothetical. We see the consequences. She took a mortal as a lover, a mortal she noticed because he was a child prodigy no less. Gale is obviously insecure with the power difference between them, not out some jealousy though, but because of course he is! He is a mortal and a young one at that. Of course he’s always going to be wondering when this eternal being will be done with him. To Gale, changing himself was the only way to prove that he’s worthy of being not just a devotee, but a partner. So he makes a very hasty and very human mistakes, and is abandoned without hesitation. Mystra chalks his actions up to that of pure hubris and absolves herself of any responsibility. She gets to walk away unscathed. Meanwhile, Gale is left adrift with a bomb in his chest.

That’s all pretty awful already, but Mystra isn’t done yet! She comes back at his most vulnerable moment and leverages his insecurities for her own devices. She promises him that he’ll finally be worthy of her forgiveness, if only he destroys himself. And Gale falls in line just like she knew he would, because gods don’t have relationships with mortals, they have devotees.

So yeah, Gale can’t get over his ex.

So I got bonkers obsessed with BG3 and while this isn't a BG3/D&D AU(which I might do a bit later), I did start thinking about fantasy byler again.

The Lore of this particular AU:

Will and Mike are childhood best friends in a peasant town. Mike is a human son of a merchant, and Will is a half elf in hiding. Maybe he has some kind of special power or is favored by a god making him a target for multiple assassins' and groups of interest hunt for him in order to use his power. Joyce, finally thinking she could let her guard down, was able to live with Will in that quiet town for six years until one of those hunters found them and destroyed the whole town causing Mike to take Will in order to keep him safe from the kidnappers. They would be 12 y/os on the run that meet the rest of the gang on their adventures in different areas. Maybe El and Will are connected through dreams and their goal is to find her so that they can get whichever power Will has out of him. Or maybe both El and Will lived in the same town protected by Joyce but El got kidnapped but Will and Mike managed to escape and they want to get her back or something. Anyway, at first it was Mike attempting to swordfight, often badly, but slowly becoming an adept swordmaster through experience and mentors while Will, wanting to be able to help Mike, would study as a cleric to be able to patch him up after he keeps fighting till he's half dead on instinct.

Thinking about how the turns would table after five years of traveling together and growing stronger where Will can finally properly help Mike after of all the years of him keeping them both alive.

But also yeah I keep thinking about Swordsman Mike that just keeps rolling very low all the time. Maybe something cursed him early in life? Something about luck or perception. Someone help me make magic ADHD.

Wyll went from "Oh, I could be the Grand Duke to "I'm not an out of reach politician, I'm a hero, Blade of Avernus!" so quickly I'm convinced it's bugged.

However, I do enjoy the visual of Wyll starting into that Grand Duke nonsense, only for him to look up at Henri whose lip is trembling, eyes welling up on the verge of a breakdown with an even more nervous looking Astarion and Gale behind her whom have already been pain in the asses about their lusts for questionable sources of power and just immediately doubling back.

Just something along the lines of "Oh shit, not going to make her cry today and I didn't want to be Duke anyway. Heyyyyy, I have a new funny name for myself to cheer you up! It's all okay now! No having to convince yet another person to make half way decent choices with their life! I can do that by myself! You're doing such a great job and are a really good leader!"
