#Finlay Donovan
Text
Am I the only person on Tumblr who is reading the Finlay Donovan books? Because I really want to talk to someone about how hard I ship Finlay and Vero and I have no one in my life to talk to about it.

The Finlay Donovan books are very copaganda, but overall I really like the humor, and I love Vero, and I do actually like Finlay alright most of the time.
Also, Angela Dawe is a great narrator imo.
I'm listening to Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun and idk if I'll still want to continue the series after I finish this one. I feel like the new has worn off, and my issues with the books are getting harder to ignore, but it's possible that's only a problem because I've read all three books this year. (I think...)
So, having the larger gap between books, while waiting for the next installment to be finished and published, might be all I need.

Hello Bookworms!!
I hope your first week of 2024 has been going great!
We have been sick since Christmas Eve. Thankfully, we are all almost over it.
What are you currently reading??
I am currently reading one of my Christmas gifts, Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun by Elle Cosimano.
It's going pretty well. I am curious to see if we find out what's going on at the end or if we are left on a cliffhanger.
I have also read Beastly & Bookish by Catrina Bell and The Banned Bookshop of Maggic Banks by Shauna Robinson, both 3 stars.

Elle Cosimano: Finlay Donovan bedobja magát
Fülszöveg: Pasik. Pelusok.

Review: Finlay Donovan Jumps The Gun by Elle Cosimano
Tumblr media
I really enjoyed the previous two Finlay Donovan books, so I was excited to dive into the latest instalment. I’ve heard that this series is going to be six books long and to be honest, I’m undecided whether I’ll carry on but we’ll see how I feel when book 4 appears.
Finlay and her nanny (and accountant) Vero totalled a car while trying to save Finlay’s ex husband Steven’s life. The Russian mob bailed them out by buying the car but now they owe the gangsters a big favour. In the name of research for Finlay’s latest romantic suspense novel, Finlay and Vero find themselves enrolling in police academy on the hunt for the true identity of EasyClean and potentially some flirting with the gorgeous Nick. Oh and they’ve also somehow got two feral children to take care of too.
Tumblr media
Once again, Finlay and Vero are at the centre of covering up horrific crimes and flying right under everyone’s radar in the process. Young, jittery Cam kept popping up and I wanted to protect him from the horrors that he was witnessing. He seems like way too much of a cinnamon roll to be anywhere near these people and I was constantly worried for his safety and wellbeing.
Tumblr media
Finlay and Vero’s friendship still manages to shine and although it is revealed in this book that they perhaps don’t know everything about each other, they’re still as strong as ever. Finlay sees Vero as her life partner and considers them ‘raising kids together’. Maybe it’s stuff for the fanfic but I would love to see a sapphic vibe emerging between them eventually. It would bring me, and I’m sure many other readers, so much joy!
Tumblr media
However, it does seem that both Finlay and Vero are very straight. Sometimes I feel like I pick up on sexual tension between them but female friendships are so often right on the edge of it that I struggle to tell. Finlay’s sexual debriefs with Vero made me laugh several times and I am still really enjoying the snarky, spicy humour in these books.
Finlay Donovan Jumps The Gun isn’t as good and gripping as its two predecessors. I found my attention waning several times in this book, which was a huge shame. However, I do still love the characters. I think the plot of this one just felt a bit too serious and the tongue-in-cheek comedy was pretty absent (rightly -it would have felt quite out of place). I want more light-heartedness in future Finlay Donovan novels because I don’t really go into them expecting genuinely high stakes or an ominous tone.

Because what else do you do when a random lady in Panera misinterprets your conversation with your literary agent and hires you to kill her husband for a heck ton of money? Cindy just finished FINLAY DONOVAN IS KILLING IT! Chaotic, hilarious, and seriously troubled, Finlay Donovan is the perfect struggling protagonist and accidental hitwoman for hire. This tale of triumph and tribulations (and there are many) will leave you laughing your socks off and anxiously flipping the pages to see if Finn manages to scrape by yet another close call. Cindy’s calling it  a gateway, if you will, for murder mysteries, perfect for the reluctant reader.

Easy Does It, Finlay Donovan
To my knowledge, this is the first fanfic posted for this series, so that’s fun.
In which Delia is taking horseback riding lessons and Finlay cannot catch a break.
(Set sometime after Knocks 'Em Dead. Canon typical violence. Just the normal amount of dead bodies.)
Also on AO3
Delia’s riding instructor is dead. Based on the bullet hole in the middle of his forehead, the mob probably had something to do with it, which means Finlay had something to do with it, which means her and Vero need to get rid of him.
“The children are fine.” Vero rounds the corner into the giant blue tent. “They’re with the stablehand learning the proper way to brush a horse.”
“Thank God.” Delia and her friends are safe, for now, and Zach’s with Steven. The only things they have to worry about are the dead man in the pen, and the wild mustang, also in the pen.
She eyes them wearily and possibly murderously, her ears pinned back.
“Hey buddy,” Finlay tries, for some reason that is not at all projection, to convince the animal that this is normal, routine even, something people go through every now and then and come out the other side still free. At this point, it’s barely an exaggeration. “We’ll be out of your mane soon, no need to look too suspicious.” Or kick me to death. she thinks, yet feels an urge to leave the gate open, to let the animal go, although Northern Virginia isn’t exactly known for it’s wild horses.
Luckily— and they really, desperately need something to go well today— the horse retreats as far from them, and the body, as the round pen will allow.
The tack trunk, with it’s meager contents of ropes and halters and things Finlay doesn’t know the names of, is not an ideal coffin. Someone will notice it’s gone, unlike her good table linens. But it’s here, and they can’t exactly afford to be choosy. The corpse is heavier then he looks; they always are. “Easy does it Finn,” Vero says. “Don’t throw your back out. We’ve got this.”
She thinks of that book, Misty of Chincoteague, that she read the kids a few mouths ago. They’ll go, she decides, if the island isn’t too expensive and they don’t go to prison for this; a family vacation: her, Vero, and the kids.
They rest him on the rim of the trunk and with one final shove, let gravity do the remainder of the work.
Finlay shuts the lid and sits on it, more short of breath then she’d like to admit. When was the last time she did a normal workout?
Vero stretches, arches her back. These days, this is the only sort of exercise they can make time for. “So where should we—”
“Mommy?”
“Delia!” Her daughter stands in the entryway of the tent, hot pink riding helmet in hand. The horse, apparently afraid of Delia, walks away from her and by necessity, closer to Finlay and Vero. She looks utterly done with all this shit. “Vero and I were just making a new friend.”
“Or two,” Vero mutters under her breath, and nudges some straw over the surprisingly small blood pool.
The whole thing comes across as hopelessly suspicious to Finlay’s own ears. But they’ve gotten away with this much, gotten to this absurd moment, surely her five year old won’t be her undoing. Surely they won’t traumatize her?
The horse, for one, does not look convinced. She watches Finlay through one eye, ready to bolt if this thing goes sideways.
In the entryway, the stablehand appears, alarmed and a little angry.
“My mommy’s a horse whisperer!”

I'm listening to Finlay Donovan Rolls the Dice and this will determine if I continue the series or stop with this one, so cross your fingers for me, i guess? (Except I'll be reading Vero's novella either way because I LOVE her so fucking much omg.)
I really enjoyed the first book, thought book 2 was good (but suffered from second book syndrome maybe), and I just thought book 3 was ok. I liked some of it, but barely enough to sway me to read the next book.
So, either I really enjoy this one, or I'm DNF'ing the series. (I assume there will be more books but I haven't actually looked into it.)
I think it's gonna need to get a high 3-star minimum in CAWPILE for me to consider continuing. Maybe a low 4.
