'The Daughter of Sherlock Holmes' Book Review By Ron Fortier

'The Daughter of Sherlock Holmes' Book Review By Ron Fortier
THE DAUGHTER OF SHERLOCK HOLMES By Leonard Goldberg Minotaur Books 303 pgs
When we breeze through a book of 300 pages swiftly, it is a sign that it is not only well written, but that the story itself is totally captivating. And both those elements are clearly present in this wonderful book. Of course it helps if you’re a Sherlock Holmes fan as we are.
The plot opens quickly in 1914. Sherlock Holmes has been dead for several years. His companion, widower Dr. John Watson, has made 221 B Baker St. his permanent resident and often enjoys the company of his son, Dr. John Watson the second. Watson senior occasionally sees people seeking assistance based on his time with the Great Detective. Such is the case when Miss Mary Harrelston arrives seeking their help in proving her older brother, Charles, did not commit suicide by hurling himself out of a two story downtown office building. The father and son amateur detectives soon learn that there were three eye witnesses to the man’s tragic demise; a Gardner working across the street at the time and a young widow taking a stroll with her ten year old son. They begin their investigation by interviewing the woman, a Mrs. Joanna Blalock and her son John.
Young Dr. Watson is taken not only by Mrs. Blalock’s beauty but also by her keen intellect. The attractive widow is immediately intrigued by their inquiries and begins to express her own misgivings as to the police’s verdict and what she witnessed. She volunteers to assist the two doctors in their quest for the truth and proves herself most adept in the role. Whereas Watson senior is already familiar with the woman and her lineage and when he reveals it in confidence to his son, the story’s narrative shifts into high gear.
“The Daughter of Sherlock Holmes” is a pure delight and Joanna Blalock is one of the most endearing detectives to inherit the legacy of Sherlock Holmes. Oh, that someone in Hollywood would latch on to this book. We can always dream.

Off the Air by Christina Estes #BookReview #ARCReview #NetGalley #CozyMystery #MinotaurBooks #NewBooks
What a great debut offering from reporter turned author, Christina Estes. #OfftheAir is a murder mystery with a lot of behind-the-scenes of a news station thrown in, which was just right for this former TV producer. #Bookreview #minotaurbooks #cozymystery
Equal parts thought-provoking and entertaining, Emmy Award winning reporter Christina Estes introduces Jolene Garcia in her Tony Hillerman Prize winning debut, Off the Air . Jolene Garcia is a local TV reporter in Phoenix, Arizona, splitting her time between covering general assignments―anything from a monsoon storm to a newborn giraffe at the zoo―and special projects. Stories that take more…

REVIEW
Perfect Shot by Steve Urszenyi
Special Agent Alexandra Martel #1
Hooked on page one and reeled in a bit more with each page read ~ Couldn’t put it down!
What I liked:
* Alexandra “Alex” Martel: widow, ex-military sniper, special ops experience, FBI Special Agent, on loan to Interpol, strong, resilient, lethal, strategic thinker, puzzle solver, follows her gut, dependable, someone I would want on my side
* Caleb Copeland: CIA branch chief developing a unique team of operators that Alex would be perfect for, experienced, dedicated, patriotic, capable, survivor, warrior, knowledgeable, lethal, interesting
* Beginning to know and care about characters that I hoped would make it through the book alive so that I can read more about them in future books
* The plot, pacing, settings, and writing
* That acronyms, agency names, military equipment, and technical information were well enough defined for me to follow without getting bogged down while reading the story
* The twists and turns
* Being thankful that there are people dedicated to keeping the world safe
* Being able to thoroughly dislike the bad guys and hope they would be vanquished
* The conclusion and lead into the next book of the series
* Reading a debut novel that is well written by an author I see great promise for
What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about how warped some thinking can be and how it leads to such evil plots, plans, and deeds
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more by this author? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and Minotaur Books for the ARC – This is my honest review.
5 Stars
BLURB
Special Agent Alexandra Martel has put her days on the battlefield behind her. Charming and disarming, relentless and lethal, she earned a reputation as one of the most renowned and decorated Army snipers in the service before stepping away. But when Alex, now an FBI special agent on loan to Interpol, learns that an old friend, an MI5 officer, has been killed under mysterious circumstances, she’s pulled back into the dangerous world she left behind: a world where some people fear her, some want to recruit her, and everyone seems to want her dead. Following a trail of clues left behind by the dead woman, Alex pieces together a terrifying conspiracy that only escalates when a nuclear warhead goes missing. Dodging death at every turn, she reluctantly joins forces with a CIA agent, but he has plans of his own for her—and will stop at nothing to achieve them. Chasing the truth through the streets of London and bustling Turkish markets to the underbelly of Paris, Alex is unrelenting in her pursuit of justice. But as the clock ticks down and the world edges closer to doom, she must fall back on her Special Ops skills to stop the unthinkable. She thought her life as a sniper was behind her— but with stakes this high, she might be the only person with the perfect shot to render the world safe.

When I’m Dead by Hannah Morrisey
Published: October 31, 2023 Minotaur Books Genre: Suspense Pages: 304 KKECReads Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I received a copy of this book for free, and I leave my review voluntarily. The development of this novel was fast-paced and deviously plotted. I wish I had time to read the first two books, just for more profound context, but this can be read as a standalone. This twisted mystery keeps you on…

Tell-Tale Bones by Carolyn Haines (Sarah Booth Delaney #26)
Private Investigator Sarah Booth Delaney and her partner Tinkie are in Sheriff Coleman Peters's office, consulting Coleman about cold cases, when Elisa Redd storms in with a case of her own. She wants Coleman to reopen the investigation of her missing daughter, Lydia Redd Maxell, the heiress to a large fortune who disappeared along with her friend Bethany nearly seven years ago. Lydia and Bethany were rumored to be working as human rights organizers abroad, but Elisa suspects Lydia’s problems might have stemmed closer to home. Now Lydia’s husband, Tope, is set to inherit the fortune, and Elisa believes he’s behind the disappearance.
Sarah Booth and Tinkie soon connect the case to a series of mysterious disappearances over the years, as well as to a perplexing recurring dream. With another woman’s life at stake, the friends follow an increasingly twisty trail all over Sunflower County, leading them to a tree and an empty grave in the county cemetery. A grave that’s said to be haunted…

My Review: I don’t think Carolyin Haines can write a bad or boring book nor I think I will stop enjoying Sarah Booth mysteries. They’re entertaining, well plotted and compelling but there’s also a more serious side and I learned a lot about historical fact or places. This solid mystery is a bit darker than usual as it talks about missing persons  and family violence. Don’t expect a gritty story, Ms Haineaas delivers a very entertaining story with food for thought. Sarah and her friends are as lovely as usual and it’s like meeting old friends and catching up. Another winner I read in one sitting. Highly recommended. Many thanks to Minotaur Books for this arc, all opinions are mine
The Author: Carolyn Haines is the USA Today bestselling author of over 70 books. In 2020, she was inducted into the Alabama Writers Hall of Fame. She was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Alabama Library Association, the Harper Lee Award for Distinguished Writing, the Richard Wright Award for Literary Excellence, as well as the "Best Amateur Sleuth" award by Romantic Times. Born and raised in Mississippi, she now lives in Alabama on a farm with more dogs, cats, and horses than she can possibly keep track of.

when you think about it combining thousands of supersoldiers literally incapable of fear with a strictly atheist, rational regime was a colossally stupid decision, and not for the reasons you're thinking of
y'know those cheesy old horror movies where the protagonists are spectacularly stupid? like, they find a spoopy book bound in suspicious leather and go, "haha lets read from this WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG" and twenty minutes later they're being chased by demon minotaurs or something. and the whole time you're screaming "NO YOU FUCKING MORONS WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT WAIT WHY ARE YOU GETTING UNDRESSED NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO HAVE SEX" and then the demon minotaurs kill them while they're having loud passionate sex because god forbid horny teenagers should ever have fun. ok so hear me out, astartes and primarchs in the pre-heresy are the same as the dumbass teenagers, except for the sex-having part (i think they T-pose at each other instead)
think about it. THEY KNOW NO FEAR. they're missing one of the key instincts we possess for recognizing dangerous situations. most people who find a spoopy book bound in suspicious leather are gonna be, y'know, spooped spooked. they won't want anything to do with it. the more anxious/scared will straight up leave. but astartes literally can't get spooked! they might burn the book for being xenos filth or something but beyond that there's nothing to balance out natural curiosity and/or lust for war trophies.
and this combines really badly with the imperium's rationalism! see, even if you don't fear the spoopy book, superstition/religion/fairy tales/etc. still provide a powerful incentive to stay away from it. you're gonna look at it and go, wow, that book looks satanic, messing with it might summon demon minotaurs, i should stay away. but the imperium actively discourages that line of thought! there's no way the spoopy book can do any harm, it's just a spoopy looking book! in fact, you SHOULD read the spoopy book just to demonstrate how not-superstitious you are!
yeah so this is why fulgrim walks into a creepy temple full of ritual snake orgy and thinks, hmm that snazzy sword the snake guys are obsessively fucking around would make a nice trophy. or why it never occurs to magnus that making deals with the fair folk might be dangerous territory.
