To Catch a Killer Review- A Solid Investigative Thriller with Good Performances from Woodley & Mendelsohn
I’ve been watching movies for a long time. Almost 44 years. In that time I’ve seen a lot of films about murders or murder mysteries if you will. Sometimes these murder mysteries have a twist to them. That is the case with To Catch a Killer. A murderer kills a bunch of people with a sniper rifle, 29 victims from a long distance on New Year’s Eve in Baltimore, Maryland. The fireworks disguise the…

Sharp Stick (dir. Lena Dunham) x Fantasia 2022.
[The] Girls creator [...] returns to independent cinema by crafting another provocative portrait of a young female desire in coming to terms with a sexual awakening through a detour of youthfully misguided self-destructive behaviour. Sharp Stick feels like both a slightly tamer or innocent but clearly more blunt narrative alternative to her acclaimed HBO series refocused on a singular protagonist.

Spencer
Year: November 5, 2021
Director:  Pablo Larraín
Screenwriter: Steven Knight
Actors: Kristen Stewart; Timothy Spall; Jack Farthing; Sean Harris; Sally Hawkins
Production Company: Komplizen Film, Fabula, Shoebox Films, FilmNation Entertainment
Synopsis: The marriage between Princess Diana and Prince Charles has long since grown cold. Though rumors of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at the queen's estate. There's eating and drinking, shooting and hunting. Diana knows the game, but this year, things will be profoundly different.
Rating:
IMDb: 6.7/10
Rotten Tomatoes: 83%
My Rating: 7.5/10
Platform: DVD
My Thoughts: I liked this movie. My mother, a fan of Princess Di, very much did not. She said that this movie made her seem to “be crazy, a nut,”  and that “the palace must’ve given it’s support to this movie.” She got up to do the dishes rather than sit and watch the movie all the way through.
I thought that the movie, while fictitious, was a sympathetic look of what could happen to a woman in her position. Her husband is cheating on her, everyone knows, and nothing will be done. She’s stifled by the crown’s rigidity, a normal girl who wasn’t properly prepared for the life that awaited her. Diana already suffered from bulimia and anorexia. It would not be surprising if the pressure and unhappiness of the situation, would have given way to something more serious.
It’s more of a character driven piece of ‘what-if’ or ‘could have been’. Even if the these events did not happen in real life, l think the movie did a great job of creating a tense, desperate, cracking up mood. And we are guided by what we know of history and how the staff treated her, for our exasperation and sympathy to have an outlet. I’m sure that feeling isn’t unfamiliar for many with families with difficult members.
I want to take a moment to acknowledge the characters in this movie. We see very little of the royal family. Besides the Queen and Charles (and a speaking point for Princess Anne) and William and Harry, the royal family is seen, not heard, if they are even seen at all. The lens of the camera is focused on Diana and primarily three members of the staff, each portraying the various levels of concern and sympathy.
We have Maggie, who is Diana’s confidante, her most loyal solider. She cares about Diana, not the crown. We have Major Gregory, who is the voice of the crown in this movie. He enforces the rules, his loyalty is not to a person but to an ideal. But even though he might be Diana’s antagonist of sorts, he is not entirely uncaring towards her. He tries to bridge the gap between them, but they never come to an understanding of each other, their relationship a metaphor for the much larger fight between Diana and the royal family. And then we have the head chef. Who is the most distant from Diana, but clearly cares for her in the way that he can, through food. He just wants Diana to eat and be healthy, and yet this angle, the ties that bind these two, are probably the most heartbreaking. Throughout the whole movie, Diana doesn’t beat her eating disorders.
No matter their stance, I liked all of the members of the staff, (the head chef was my most favorite) and their different levels of care. Even at their most antagonistic, like with Major Gregory, none of them were unsympathetic and unlikeable, compared to the sub-zero temperatures of the Queen’s view of Diana.
Kristin Stewart did a fine job acting in this piece, I can see why she won several best actress awards for this film. I really sympathized for her version of Diana, one that we’ve not got to see quite like this before. Pain, frustration, helplessness, and anger. Doe eyes but when it came down to it, she had a spine. I think the only thing that didn’t work for me was the voice and accent. I’m not a native of the UK so I can’t say how accurate it was or anything. There was something personally that I didn’t care for but that doesn’t detract from Stewart’s acting.
I would call this almost an art film with it’s cinematography consisting of long, slow shots. The heavily reliance on music to set mood. The scene were Diana eats her pearls, only for the whole scene to be entirely in her head, and the use of metaphors between Ann Boleyn and the runover pheasant at the beginning of the movie. It’s not a movie for everyone, like my mother for instance, but I don’t mind these kinds of films, and to me, it was a good movie.

'Dog' Movie and Blu-ray Review
‘Dog’ Movie and Blu-ray Review
The following review was written by Ultimate Rabbit correspondent, Tony Farinella. There is nothing about “Dog” that will offend your cinematic senses, nor is there anything in the film which will reinvent the wheel.  This is a simple movie with a simple concept.  For a lot of filmgoers, they probably love the idea of a dog movie starring Channing Tatum, who also co-directed the film with its…

‘The Life Of Chuck’: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan & Jacob Tremblay Join Stephen King Adaptation From Mike Flanagan And Trevor Macy’s Intrepid Pictures
Chiwetel Ejiofor (Rob Peace), Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3) and Jacob Tremblay (The Toxic Avenger) have joined the cast of The Life of Chuck, the latest of many Stephen King adaptations from filmmaker Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep), which kicked off production in Alabama under an interim agreement earlier this month. Tom Hiddleston and Mark Hamill lead the ensemble of the pic, written and directed by Flanagan, as we were first to tell you.
Also now involved is QWGmire, the production and financing entity known for the indie horror Agnes and the forthcoming Lovely, Dark and Deep, which has made a major equity investment in the independently financed feature.
Stated QWGmire partners Molly C. Quinn, Matthew M. Welty and Elan Gale, “We are thrilled to partner with Mike and Trevor [Macy] on this project. Mike is a master storyteller and we can’t wait to bring his inspirational adaptation of Stephen King’s short story to audiences.”
Based on three interconnected stories from King’s 2020 anthology If It Bleeds, The Life of Chuck examines the existence of its subject Charles Krantz in reverse, beginning with his death aged 39 from a brain tumor and ending with his childhood in a house believed to be haunted. Flanagan is set to produce the feature adaptation alongside his long-time Intrepid Pictures partner, Macy. WME Independent is repping domestic sales, with FilmNation Entertainment overseeing the international front.
Best known for his Academy Award-nominated role in 12 Years a Slave, Ejiofor’s recent credits include the Showtime sci-fi drama series The Man Who Fell to Earth, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and the Sundance-opening sci-fi rom-com The Pod Generation with Emilia Clarke. Starring alongside Camila Cabello, Michael Kelly and more in Rob Peace, his sophomore feature on the heels of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, he’ll also soon be seen in Netflix’s The Old Guard 2 and a Venom threequel from Sony.
Gillan over the summer closed out her run as Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Nebula in the James Gunn-helmed Vol. 3, which grossed over $845M worldwide. Other recent credits for the actress include The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, Thor: Love and Thunder and the Mali Elfman-helmed indie genre-bender Next Exit. She’ll next be seen in the Lisa Steen comedy Late Bloomers, which world premiered at SXSW earlier this year, and also stars up opposite Russell Crowe in the forthcoming crime thriller Sleeping Dogs.

'The 74th Berlin International Film Festival will open on February 15, 2024 with the world premiere of Small Things Like These, an Irish-Belgian production. Directed by Tim Mielants from a screenplay by Enda Walsh, the international cast includes Cillian Murphy, Eileen Walsh, Michelle Fairley and Emily Watson. Small Things Like These will screen in Competition.
The film is based on the book by the award-winning Irish writer Claire Keegan (who also wrote “Foster”, adapted into the Academy Award nominated Irish language film An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl)).
Small Things Like These reunites director Mielants (WIL, De Patrick, The Responder) with Murphy, who previously worked together on series three of Peaky Blinders. Walsh, a longtime collaborator of Murphy’s, wrote the script. Small Things Like These takes place over Christmas in 1985, when devoted father and coal merchant Bill Furlong (Murphy) discovers startling secrets kept by the convent in his town, along with some shocking truths of his own.
The film reveals truths about Ireland's Magdalen laundries – horrific asylums run by Roman Catholic institutions from the 1820s until 1996, ostensibly to reform “fallen young women.”
The film was produced by Murphy and Alan Moloney through their company Big Things Films along with Catherine Magee. Matt Damon and Drew Vinton also produce alongside executive producers Ben Affleck, Kevin Halloran, and Michael Joe for Artists Equity with FilmNation Entertainment handling international sales. The film was financed by Artists Equity and Screen Ireland/Fís Éireann and was co-produced in Belgium by Wilder Content.
“With Small Things Like These, Tim Mielants tells the story of a man of few words, with wide open eyes, as clear as the skies of Ireland. In The Quiet Girl we already had sense of Claire Keegan’s skill in portraying small, apparently simple characters and making them unforgettable; here her delicate, rich and yet down-to-earth writing finds a great interpreter in Cillian Murphy. We are confident that this story that allies the kindness to be directed to the more fragile, and the willpower to stand up against injustice, will resonate with everyone. We are looking forward to launching this ‘quiet’ yet quite exceptional film at the start of Zeitgeist Irland 24, a year-long celebration of Irish culture in Germany,” says the Berlinale’s Artistic Director Carlo Chatrian.'

The Crow reboot package lived up to pre-market expectations and proved to be a standout from FilmNation’s packed Cannes slate as heavyweight international buyers snapped up rights to the upcoming revenge thriller.
Bill Skarsgård from the It franchise and Deadpool 2 will star alongside British singer-songwriter FKA twigs for Rupert Sanders, whose directing credits include Snow White And The Huntsman, Ghost In The Shell and Foundation. Sanders will direct from a screenplay by Zach Baylin, the Oscar-nominated writer of King Rchard and the upcoming Creed III.
Closed deals include Entertainment Film for the UK, Leonine for Germany, Roadshow Films for Australia and New Zealand, Eagle for Italy, Nordisk for Scandinavia, California Filmes for Latin America, Tri Pictures for Spain, and Moviecloud for Taiwan.
In further trading, rights have gone for Middle East (Italia), Eastern Europe (Vertical), Benelux (WWE), Thailand (M Pictures), Malaysia (Square Box), Singapore (Shaw), Portugal (Pris), Switzerland (Ascot Elite), Greece (Tanweer), South Africa (Empire), India (PVR), Turkey (Yeni Bir), and Baltics (Acme).
Production is anticipated to begin in Europe this summer on the reimagining of the cult character based on James O’Barr’s graphic novel. Alex Proyas directed the 1994 feature version about a man who returns from the dead to avenge his murder and that of his fiancée.
Producers are Molly Hassell, Victor Hadida – whose Metropolitan will distribute The Crow in France – as well as John Jencks, and Edward R. Pressman, who produced the 1994 original. CAA Media Finance represents US rights.
Sanders is represented by CAA, Grandview and Independent Talent Group. Skarsgard is represented by WME, Magnolia Entertainment and Hirsch Wallerstein. FKA twigs is represented by UTA.
FilmNation’s Cannes slate includes Vatican conspiracy thriller Conclave to star Ralph Fiennes, John Lithgow and Isabella Rossellini; Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu and Djimon Hounsou in diver thriller Last Breath; Michael Keaton starring in and directing the noir Knox Goes Away; and Paul Greengrass-Benedict Cumberbatch peasant revolt drama The Hood.

I’m actually really looking forward to this. I always thought the story behind the Voyager Golden Record project was worthy of a movie because it’s true Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan (with whom he wrote Cosmos and who has kept his spirit alive since he died, including producing the two recent Cosmos sequel series) did apparently meet and fell for each other during the assembly of the record.
Garfield (aka Spider-Man #2 and also a one-time Doctor Who guest star) wouldn’t be my first choice to play Sagan, but it’ll be interesting to see how he approaches the role.
