Buffy: It doesn't have to be like this, y'know.
Faith: Actually, I think it has to be exactly like this.

the thing about faith lehane is that she is so fragile & delicate & hurt but the world made her believe that she couldn’t be those things (not safely) & so she became cruel. my siblings & I re watched ‘faith hope & trick’ last night & it’s been a while since I watched that one. I think the scene where she’s beating the shit out of a vampire yelling “this is me, you undead bastard” after a comment about how her dead mother hits harder than him is brought up a lot & for good reason. but the show goes on to drill into the audience how angry & hard faith is. that’s pretty core to her character & her fall from grace. we know that
what about the scene in the hotel where she’s faced with kakistos & she’s crying & falling on the ground repeating “no no no” & buffy has to drag her out of there? what about the scene right before she kills kakistos where buffy has to remind her to fight because she’s just letting him beat her? the thing about slayers is that they’re not allowed to be vulnerable AND strong, not really, not until the very end when all the slayers are called to work together. and it does have to be that way narratively, too.
buffy’s first love has to become her worst enemy after she sleeps with him. buffy has to be punished brutally for opening up to parker & reminded that people are cruel & the world is unforgiving & buffy has to lose riley because she’s not open enough (that’s not the real reason imo but it is narratively framed that way) & buffy has to refuse to be open with spike or emotionally available to him because she’s been forced to believe that she CAN’T be vulnerable with anyone by that time.
because the story demands it. buffy the vampire slayer is a story that knows it’s a story. it’s meta in a sense we don’t often see - not with quippy one liners that break the 4th wall - but with a crushing knowledge that the characters are trapped in the narrative & they can’t escape.
kendra learns to be more social & treat herself like a person not just a weapon & to open up to buffy & treat the scoobies as friends & she’s killed right away. buffy’s romances all fall apart until she meets someone who’s willing to accept the ways she can’t be open with him & then he dies. faith’s very introduction is framed in a way that posits that her killing the thing chasing her (her past) is the proper way to deal with it. so why would she ever assume that dealing with things through violence is wrong? when that’s the story she’s in?

The thing about Faith is that she could've just introduced herself like a normal person. She came to Sunnydale to meet Buffy, she clearly wanted to spend time with Buffy - that's why she's at the Bronze. But instead she decides to seduce a vampire and lure both him and Buffy outside so she can look really cool in front of her new friends, because she is a freak and loser and objectively insane.

my rewatch of faith hope and trick btvs 3x03:
Filing this opening scene away as one of my favourite Scooby moments
The way Xander and Cordelia just hold hands feels so organic and natural. I know Xander sucks but those two are underrated
What is the point of Scott Hope? I get he’s supposed to be a rebound for Buffy but ugh
I just realized Cordy is wearing cross earrings. Smart
Lord this bangel dream. Their chemistry is too much, and the CLADDAGH rings? LET ME LIVE IN PEACE
Angel’s decomposed face, laugh and the words “I did [go to hell]” are really so haunting
Buffy and Joyce teasing Snyder is gold. Well-deserved
“The mayor on line 1” OH I’M LOVING THIS BUILD-UP
Yeesh Scott u have no game
UGH CORDELIA LOOKS SO GOOD
Faith!!!!
FAITH WENT OUT BUCK-NAKED TO GO FIGHT VAMPS?! Omfg
NOT THE FLASHBACK TO BUFFY KILLING ANGEL
LMAO FAITH CALLING GILES HANDSOME AND WILLOW DOESN’T RAISE HER HAND IN DISGUST HAAAA
Oh WHAT are those shoes they put Buffy in
I think this ep is a good start to the Buffy//Faith relationship except everyone loving Faith works against her writing later on
“B….Uffy” can we also talk more about Aly’s comedic timing?
Joyce is having a pretty underwhelming reaction to the fact that Buffy died
“Slayer pride parade” wow really hit the metaphor right on its head huh
I like that the topic of Angel is what gets Buffy to finally snap on Faith
Faith being way too violent on that vamp is a good detail for later
Poor Giles not being invited to that watcher retreat
Buffy. BUFFY. You’re charmed by this Scott moron?
OH MY GOD NOT THE CLADDAGH RING
Buffy is hurting so bad, oh my dear, you’ll heal
Wow I remember nothing from this ep, I forgot Faith’s watcher was dead and Kakistos knows faith
LOOL GOTTA LOVE MR TRICK
So one master vampire gets cloven hooves, another looks like an old bat. What are the good parts abt being a master vamp
Buffy’s confession about killing Angel is SO SAD
Buffy. Why can’t you date ME instead
OH THIS ENDING SCENE IS TAKING ME OUT
OH TO WATCH THIS IN REAL TIME

Faith, Hope and Trick aired for BTVS season 3, episode 3. This was the first appearance of Faith, a charismatic working-class Slayer from Boston who befriends Buffy. (She did not have a last name during the show, and was given the full name Faith Lehane after S7 ended.)
Faith is played by Eliza Dushku and made a total of 26 appearances in the Buffyverse. Faith appears in BTVS S3 and S4, ATS S1 and S2 and S4, and BTVS S7.

*eyeing yet another "Childe is a Christ figure" theory*
The human urge to sacrifice someone to solve their problems.
(I really hope that's what turns out to be the Fontainian 'sin' or maybe the original Enkanomiya sin even.
sacrificing a divine being so that they could keep their petty lives and not solve the problems they were responsible for. pretending that nothing happened
or maybe even that's what was wrong with Teyvat's creation)

Her Name Alone Invokes Awe (Faith, Hope, and Trick)
Tumblr media
If we view the show as a metaphorical representation of Buffy’s journey into adulthood - with adulthood always bound to slayerhood - then this point in the series marks an interesting moment, as Buffy has completed the first step of her journey. In Season One she accepted her destiny. In Season Two she accepted the responsibility of making choices forced upon her by that destiny. She opens Season Three by passionately embracing her destiny - claiming both her Girl and Slayer halves as essential components in her self-identity. She is no longer a child in terms of mental maturity, and in nine episodes time she will no longer legally be one either. She is entering adulthood - or rather, much like Willow in this episode’s opening, she has been dragged into it. The question is no longer “will Buffy accept her metaphorical adulthood?” It is “what does her metaphorical adulthood mean to her?” It is “who is Buffy Summers, anyway?”
The show explores these, as it so often does, through another character. Characters on this show always exist in twofold - as themselves, and as metaphorical representations of Buffy’s component parts. The Heart; the Mind; the Child; the Shadow. Until now, the last of these roles has been filled by Cordelia. The Shadow represents temptations and suppressed desires, and so Cordelia, who represents the pre-Sunnydale Buffy, was designed for this role. She was a Buffy who ignored her destiny - a temptation that Buffy had been on a journey to resist. With Buffy having accepted her destiny - her Slayerness - Cordelia is no longer required in this role, and so will have only one more last hurrah of an episode in which she performs it. Buffy must gain a new Shadow.
And so here, in Season Three’s true premiere, She enters. She takes central position in this season, acting both as the arguable Big Bad and Buffy’s primary foil. She, unlike the slayer that preceded her, acts as a genuine challenger to Buffy’s position as Hero of this narrative, and will battle her for control. She is more than a Shadow. I have referred to her as Buffy’s ‘Prime Shadow’ before, but a better phrase may be Buffy’s Inverse. She is Buffy, filtered through another lens, and the show will make no subtleties of that fact. She exists to show us who Buffy is - to question who she could be. She is her mirror. Her twin. The photographic negative of her soul.
Her name is Faith.

OLD POST. Got better at Tumblr so Exhibit A no longer has to be in 2 parts!
Full post here. This was Exhibit A, part 2/2 - Your honor they love each other! 3.03 (fuffy)
This is a pro-fuffy BTVS rewatch. (Happy Pride Month!) Exhibit A is S03E03, aka 3x03, aka 3.03 Faith Hope & Trick. Long post
11. Their first patrol! Pre-fight Faith says something in your bottle needs uncorking and then suggests it's the Angel situation. Uhm hello, you literally met this girl like yesterday? Why are you so invested? Their first verbal fight escalates WILDLY. Buffy calls Faith F which is hilarious. Post fight Buffy is upset Faith didn’t help her, even though normally she patrols solo. (fuffygifs)
12. Faith tries to charm the motel manager. It is not working. Buffy shows up and he IMMEDIATELY clocks them, saying roommates are extra. (andremichaux)
13. Faith loses her shit when Kakistos is mentioned, the badass and charm facade crumbling. (haydenpannetieres) Buffy knows something is wrong and gets it out of Faith, being caring for a bit. We see Faith's first jump out of a window! Buffy follows. They work together, Faith even in her panic realizes they’ve been driven back to the lair and Buffy gives Faith confidence and eventually Faith gets the kill.
14. Post-Kakistos kill Buffy gives a little speech about how Faith dealt with a lot but got it behind her. Faith inspires her to be honest that Angel was cured when she killed him. And maybe Faith inspires Buffy to move on from her first real love to someone new. (The “show” wants you to think it’s possibly Scott Hope or maybe even Angel, but they could have picked Faith.)
15. Bonus Bangel thought: I know the arcs were already set, but watching the show it feels like this. Show: dang, Faith and Buffy had a lot of chemistry in their scenes. *uhhhhh start panicking about the queerness* Hmmmm, Angel? Angel? we need Angel back. And he needs to be.... naked. Yes! Insert weird naked Angel falling from the sky at the end of this episode. LOL silly show.
16. Personally I take Faith's stories with a healthy serving of salt. Scott calls them “tall tales.” It’s part of her charm offensive to tell these wild and entertaining stories.
Summary: They love each other rating: 0.5 out of 5. Buffy and Faith still have more chemistry than Buffy and Scott though! Buffy’s intrigued but repressing and Faith’s definitely interested or something. Per someone else this is one of the five especially Faith-focused episodes in S3. (Technically a second tier one.)
I had to include the gif of Faith, so hopeful that first night at the Bronze. She says to Buffy: "cuz you and I are gonna have fun, you know, watcherless and fancy-free."
Exhibit A has been submitted, the prosecution rests for the day.
