F1 Re-Watch 2022: Round 16 - Italy
Si ragazzi!!!!
Alas this is another “I remember almost nothing from this weekend” race for me, apart from super Nyck subbing for Albon, and Ferrari running a special livery and yellow race suits because vibes I guess???
Anyway, avanti!
To get into the spirit of things I’m having a decaf tea in my Ferrari mug, here’s hoping I don’t end up crying into it come lap 5
I once again forgot to look up the starting grid before pressing play so I may be having whiplash again folks
Wait this was the first race after the Queen died???? that’s wild
Anyway. Monza (extremely beloved).
Oh no. we’re playing engine penalty bingo. Please I’m not strong enough.
Lewis P19 :(
SEB AND LANCE P11 AND P12 LET’S GO
GOATIFI P10
McLaren second row????
Ah. Charles on pole. Well we know how this ends 😭
Charles love I think you’re great at quali but please get a better pole to win ratio for my sanity.
Livery watch: The Italy 2022 Ferrari livery is the superior livery, I truly love that they kept having Ferrari written on the rear wing this year, it looks great. (shocking that the livery designer is the Ferrari employee doing their best, but here we are)
anyway let’s go zoom zoom
[Start/Lap 1]: the roar from the crowd as Charles leads 😭
SEB INTO P10 LET’S GOOOOOOOO
[Lap 2]: Lance and Seb infighting into the first chicane BOYS BE NICE
[Lap 3]: A Ferrari leading at Monza. Feels good feels organic.
(I still have a lot of pain from the end of Seb’s Ferrari years, but Charles gets a free pass)
[Lap 4]: Verstappen v Russell. I fear violence.
[Lap 5]: nvm there was no violence because the RB18 was just so quick on the straight
TEEEEEEEEEED
Why can’t we get Ted in the comm box I’d much rather hear his thoughts on everything
[Lap 6]: Less racing so far and more “here’s some out of place cars moving up the field really quickly”
choo choo all aboard the Danny Ric DRS train
[Lap 7]: Lewis sighting!! up to P18 chasing Latifi.
also de Vries holding P8. Just FE Champion things.
[Lap 8]: ...why is there smoke coming out of Perez’s front right brake???
FLAMES????? ARE THEY ON FIRE?????
WHY ARE HIS BRAKES ON FIRE????
Fireman Seb WE NEED YOU
[Lap 9]: Right trying to move on. Not feeling that great knowing there’s a car on track with dodgy brakes at Monza of all places :)))))
Oh Lewis is up into P15??? NICE
[Lap 10]: “If Verstappen goes to Plan C, we want you to go to Plan B” We are at the point where Ferrari have a strategy alphabet for other teams. Shoot me it would hurt less.
Nonononononononno do not tell me Seb has an engine problem.
[Lap 12]: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
racing gods I WILL FIGHT YOU WITH MY FISTS
VSC :(
I am the depressed AM mechanics and the depressed AM mechanics are me
[Lap 13]: Everyone’s doing the VSC pitstop shuffle and I’m crying
oh just Charles pitted.
hmm.
40 laps on a set of mediums???? That’s... potentially dodgy
oh, Ferrari
[Lap 14]: ANYWAY Lewis is up into P13 🎉
[Lap 16]: The DRS train is still going, unsure if it’s gotten longer
“Do not short shift” oh god no
I am now crying into my tea
FERRARI WHY
They still owe me emotional damages from 2019 onwards it seems
[Lap 17]: ayyy Lewis into P11!!!
Norris overtook Alonso!!! some actual racing!!!
We’re nowhere near Miami levels of dull but yeah... not much going on so far
[Lap 19]: Congrats on your first track limits warning Nyck, welcome to F1
[Lap 21]: Lance battling Ocon for P16 👀
[Lap 22]: “We are thinking Plan C” :))))))))
I kid you not seeing Charles radio in screen now gives me anxiety
That was very unfortunate timing of Kelly Piquet yawning while Perez’s dad was clapping
[Lap 23]: “Hamilton catching Fernando Alonso” oh no. Spa flashbacks.
OH NO THEY’RE NEXT TO EACH OTHER
stress
no violence please I BEG
[Lap 25]: *distressed yelling*
Lewis is still following Fernando, he’s faster, but maybe not with a big enough delta to make an easy pass, judging by the gap between them holding at around 6 tenths
(look at me trying to be all smart)
[Lap 27]: Half distance klaxon I think???
oh hang on
YEAH LEWIS INTO P6 ON THE MAIN STRAIGHT
That was actually quite minimal stress phew
[Lap 29]: Meanwhile it looks like Charles is either going to get overtaken by Verstappen or pit again :))))
Australia really does feel like a long, long, long time ago
[Lap 31]: Meanwhile the race has been so exiting Crofty and Brundle are talking about how nice the podium is, instead of literally anything else.
Monza how could you let me down like this 😔
[Lap 32]: Aaaaand Alonso mechanical DNF
[Lap 33]: HOW are Lewis and Norris still to pit yet???
Pitwall??? Did you forget about your drivers???
“Plan C confirmed” Stab me, just get my suffering over with.
Yup, Charles onto the two stop.
[Lap 34]: Don’t get me wrong, it has been SO NICE so see Ferrari somewhat on pace with RBR, but it’s felt very close but no cigar.
Oh thank goodness Lewis finally pits, onto the softs. He comes out P12.
[Lap 35]: 19.6 seconds between Verstappen and Charles. ughhhhhh
Lance is in 16th so I fear no AM points today 😭
[Lap 35]: Lewis watch: Into P11
[Lap 36]: Norris also finally stops, and Lewis is into P9.
[Lap 37]: LEWIS DOUBLE OVERTAKE ROUND CURVA GRANDE
yeah that was hot.
INTO P7!!!!!
And now into P6. HELL YEAH.
[Lap 38]: ahhh de Vries clinging onto P10!!!! 🤞
I legit cannot remember where he finished so I’m praying for points.
Though Zhou is gaining on him. I’ll allow a Zhoint (Zhou point) because he’s a good bean
[Lap 41]: Nooooooo Lance DNF 😭😭😭😭
pain, suffering, screaming, crying etc
[Lap 42]: Charles’ gap to Verstappen is 18 and a half secs so I’m not getting anywhere near the hopium
At least he’s on the podium :))))))
If Lewis has any mechanical problems I will legit sob, pls stop taking out my boys racing gods
Ahhh nice bit of racing with Mick and Nicky!!!
It was for 14th place but I’ll take it
[Lap 43]: RBR pit Perez, dropping him to P7
With 10 laps left I’m not sure how I feel about that potentially working
[Lap 44]: Nyck still in P10!!!!
[Lap 45]: and as they’re nothing happening on track we cut to Sylvester Stallone
“No comms please I’m busy” Mood Lando but
[Lap 47]: de Vries gaining on Gasly you say?? 👀
Cut to the Williams mechanics 🥺
*sigh* Dan DNF
The Monza winner curse continues
aaaand safety car. at least it’s an Aston Martin.
[Lap 48]: Pit stop shuffle 2 electric boogaloo
Although, there’s 5-6 laps left, and Dan’s car is in a funny place. idk if there will be time for a restart
“That is a sensible call from Ferrari” quick someone write that down I did not think I would hear this this year.
“There are 9 lapped cars that need to unlap themselves” :))))))))))))))))))
I’m trying really hard to not think about [REDACTED]
[Lap 49]: Ted and me share a braincell, he also doesn’t think we’ll get a restart.
[Lap 50]: Yeah we’re ending the race under the safety car lads they haven’t moved the McLaren yet
An uneventful end to a very uneventful race
[Lap 51]: ayyyy there’s the beloved Aston Martin safety car
at least there’s one AM leading a race 😭
WHY THE FUCK IS THE CRANE MOVING WHILE THE CARS ARE GOING PAST?????????
Great, now I’m pissed off.
[Lap 52]: Trying to calm down by reminding myself we have Charles in P2 and Lewis P5, this is significantly better than what I thought would happen!!!
Wait a minute.
The race ending under SC means DE VRIES POINT!!!!!
a tiny spark of joy!!!!
[Lap 53/Finish]: Oh the crowd are booing. Damn.
Charles first consecutive podiums since the start of the year??? I will take it.
*deep inhale*
NYCK DE VRIES POINT!!!! GET IT!!!!!
EDIT: My mind was seemingly so numbed by the race I didn’t notice Nyck and Zhou moving into P9 and P10, I’m assuming bc of Dan’s DNF. So Nyck POINTS and ZHOINT!!!!!
Well that was... quite meh. Barely a hint of midfield spice, the main “racing” was all the out of place cars coming back up the order. And honestly, I’m already struggling to remember what I just watched 😭
4 and a half front wings out of 10. Next race: Singapore (very, very beloved).

what is your comfort media? like a book, show, movie, a race ect.
this is such a fun question! here's an extensive list of media i like:
comfort book: Slouching Towards Bethlehem by Joan Didion for sure, though i have been non-stop reading and re-reading Elif Batuman's Either/Or since it was released in 2022.
comfort anime: Cowboy Bebop (cool and interesting wow) and Haikyuu!! (quarantine mental illness)
comfort video game: Night in the Woods forever and ever. i also am a Disco Elysium player so... if anyone wants to talk about that with me, let me know.
comfort show: POSE. there's no contest at all, this could be the only thing i ever watch for the rest of my life and i would never complain.
comfort movie: Almost Famous or Skate Kitchen are both my babygirls for different reasons. i always leave them feeling like i need to become more cool and go out and do things with my friends.
comfort song: 'Gossamer Thin' by Conor Oberst was THE song for me when i was a teenager for unknown reasons, but i think 'Cloudbusting' by Kate Bush has been my top track on Spotify for three years straight now. so that one.
comfort album: i first discovered Phoebe Bridgers through the Killer EP, and then Stranger in the Alps came out in 2017 and irreparably changed the chemical makeup of my brain. Melodrama by Lorde is also up there, and more recently Comfort to Me by Amyl and the Sniffers.
comfort race: Brazil 2012!!! i rewatch it like every week and pretty much have the commentary memorized at this point. if you subscribe to F1 TV just to get access to the grand prix archive and only stream this race it's worth it imo.
comfort f1 video: the 2008 grid lip synching to 'Welcome to the Black Parade' by My Chemical Romance during their year-end montage. i've posted about it here.

australian gp feels like a lifetime ago... can't believe how much things changed, two weeks ago we were worried about daniel disappearing until the us races and now he's on the grid🥺
on the other hand I just realized checo has been flopping since literally ausgp (when we saw the rb19 floor for the first time rip). maybe it's time to idk? re-examine? do a mid season driver swap?? i totally see it happen even just from a narrative standpoint. daniel just looks and feels like a someone who'd be promoted twice in one season (third driver -> active racing driver -> racing for rb AGAIN). like he just has that energy. if i knew nothing about f1 and i just started watching dts today, and you tell me this curly haired half naked good looking obnoxiously likeable guy will flop, and then unflop himself, in the course of five seasons, and then there will be an episode titled 'the prodigal son returns' that opens with him saying "i was gonna retire i will not no more" in his mclaren uniform, proceeds to the disastrous silly season 2022, to him losing the seat, to him signing himself back to rb, to him testing so well they controversially fired a rookie on lap 11, to him racing once again BEFORE SUMMER BREAK, and ends with him actually winning vegas in rb19 i will actually not be that surprised. (in fact if they don't call that episode 'prodigal son returns' i will sue)
sorry i got carried away lol. re: can't believe how much things have changed: literally same! and like last year everybody was worried he was so burned out he might not enjoy this sport ever again. and here he is looking glowy and energized. falling back in love with racing in front of our eyes... good time to be a dirlie tbh 😭 im just so happy for him.

Daniel Ricciardo parties hard with The Chainsmokers in Las Vegas just before Australian Grand Prix
Daniel Ricciardo parties hard with The Chainsmokers in Las Vegas just days before the Australian Grand Prix as fans lap up his fresh start after messy McLaren exit: 'He's living his best life' Ricciardo spotted partying in Las Vegas Aussie F1 star seen with The Chainsmokers Fans happy so see him enjoying life By James Cooney For Daily Mail Australia Published: 00:20 EDT, 27 March 2023 | Updated: 00:20 EDT, 27 March 2023 Aussie F1 star Daniel Ricciardo has been spotted partying in Las Vegas alongside superstar dance music duo The Chainsmokers just days before the Australian GP - and fans are overjoyed to see him finally having fun after he endured a horror run with McLaren. Ricciardo, 33, will watch on from the sidelines this year after being dumped by the British team for upstart Oscar Piastri following a poor 2022 campaign that led many to question his future in the sport. The fan favourite has since re-joined Red Bull - where he won seven grands prix - as their third driver, meaning his main responsibilities will include testing, commercial activity and simulator work. After a dismal couple of years at McLaren where the Aussie admitted he got into a cycle of negativity, Ricciardo seems to be loving life now that there's far less pressure on him.  The 'Honey Badger' proved just how relaxed he is recently when he was spotted at Encore Beach Club in Las Vegas partying with the Chainsmokers.  Daniel Ricciardo has been spotted partying in Las Vegas alongside EDM duo The Chainsmokers, with fans overjoyed to see him living it up after being punted by McLaren  The Perth-born star is still one of the most popular F1 drivers on the planet and fans were delighted to see him smiling. 'Living his best life, as he should,' Tweeted a fan. 'Daniel and the chainsmokers ahhh life is good!!!' said another. 'THE SMILE??? THE RINGS??? THE SUNGLASSES??? I'M OBSESSED,' commented a third. Ricciardo recently opened up about his 2023 ambitions in a LinkedIn post. 'This is the first year in as long as I can remember that my goals aren't going to be 100% about racing and competing,' he wrote. 'I'm back in an environment and ultimately a family that I have a lot of good memories with, and it feels really good to be back there. 'But it's not about me this year, it's about the wider team and trying to contribute and help them where I can. After a dismal couple of years where the Aussie admitted he got into a cycle of negativity, Ricciardo seems to be loving life with less pressure on him The Perth-born star has expressed his desire to spend more time in America 'Jumping into the simulator, learning their car and helping shape the development are all things I'm focused on doing. 'In turn that will develop my abilities, my confidence and my enjoyment behind the wheel.' The 33-year-old has also long expressed his desire to spend more time in the USA after growing very fond of the country in recent years. 'When I eventually stop racing and get a bit of time, I want to road trip around America,' he told host of the Beyond The Grid podcast Tom Clarkson. 'I think also, what a 110 [100cc motorbike] going across America would symbolise is slowing down and just taking everything in. 'We're always thinking about getting somewhere as quick as we can, getting the job done, getting out, and it's like, no, I want to soak everything in, and just be.' Ricciardo has confirmed he will be making an appearance at his home grand prix beginning this week - but mainly for meet and greets around the track. Infinite Drive will be a blockchain-based mobile racing game metaverse https://ift.tt/bNIY0Fu
Did you miss a session from GamesBeat Summit 2022? All sessions are available to stream now. Watch now.
The Tiny Digital Factory announced it is making Infinite Drive as the “first real driving metaverse.” The mobile game will use non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and Web3 technology. The Montreal, Canada, and Lyon, France-based game studio has 35 people and it has longstanding relationships with carmakers. It said the free-to-play game already will have more than 100 cars licensed by the end of the year.
Infinite Drive is expected to debut worldwide on mobile devices in the first quarter. But the company will sell NFTs of its cars during the summer.
Testing players’ driving skills, Infinite Drive will combine accessible and authentic gameplay with graphically beautiful re-creations of officially licensed cars, the company said.
The Tiny Digital Factory has long-standing relationships with world-class carmakers such as McLaren, Porsche, Mercedes AMG, and Ford, while Infinite Drive’s showroom already includes high-performance cars from Renault, Alpine, Ruf and W Motors.
Designed by racing fans for racing fans, Infinite Drive’s simulation-based gameplay will bring the thrill of being in the driver’s seat to the mobile metaverse, the company said. Players will be able to feel, hear and experience each car’s unique characteristics out on track, competing online with each other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Players will be able to own their cars as NFTs in Infinite Drive.
With the power of web3 technology, highly-skilled drivers will be able to “race to earn.” They can enter official races, competitions and even share in the winnings, just like a real-world racing team.
In addition, the integration of Web3 technology allows players to build, trade and own their own dream car collection as they compete for pole position on the track. Starting in the summer, Infinite Drive will offer an initial collection of 5,000 licensed NFT cars from premium real-world brands, which will provide immediate access to the game’s closed alpha phase.
However, there is no requirement for players to own a car to enjoy Infinite Drive and hone their racing skills, and the full game will be free-to-play on iOS and Android.
“With its game-first engine architecture and unique digital car ownership, Infinite Drive is the zenith of twenty years of making driving simulation games,” said Stephane Baudet, CEO at The Tiny Digital Factory, in a statement. “For decades, racing fans have been staring lovingly at dream cars in virtual garages. So we’ve used Web3 tech to make it possible for gamers to actually own and earn from their vehicles, alongside a stunning player experience out on track. Infinite Drive offers the accessibility of mobile games, combined with play and earn, providing the tools to reward passionate players who are already organizing racing events and helping us create the very best driving experience.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Infinite Drive is coming in Q4.
The company’s developers have worked on titles such as Jurassic World: The Game, Gangstar, Hitman Sniper, Fallout Shelter and Rollercoaster Tycoon Touch.
The Tiny Digital Factory team’s experience includes the chart-topping GT Manager and F1 Mobile Racing. It also worked with Animoca Brands to develop F1 Delta Time, a pioneering Web3 driving game, as well as the renowned REVV Racing game. Animoca Brands lost its license for the F1 brand and announced in March that it was shutting down F1 Delta Time.
Infinite Drive has so far been entirely funded by The Tiny Digital Factory, said Baudet, in an email to GamesBeat.
The first collection of NFT cars will be released to the community in early July 2022, while The Tiny Digital Factory’s upcoming Series A funding round will support the public release of Infinite Drive.
The company has been working with more than 20 car manufacturers over the last three years on previous games.
“For Infinite Drive, we already have licensed about 30 car models from six car manufacturers. Additional top car brands will be announced in the coming weeks and we expect to have more than 100 car models licensed by the end of 2022,” Baudet said.
On top of cars, the company has official race tracks, and it is in discussion with multiple racing franchises globally and in countries such as the U.S., United Kingdom, Japan and Australia.
“Rather than just licensing championships, however, our intention is to empower those partners with tools to build and manage their own digital events for their communities,” Baudet said.
NFT resistance
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Infinite Drive is coming in Q4.
I asked what Baudet thought about the resistance to NFT games from gamers and some game developers.
He said, “Ten years ago, we experienced the same type of resistance when mobile gaming embraced the free-to-play model. We have been involved with blockchain gaming since 2020 with our partner Animoca Brands. At first, we too were skeptical about the sustainability of those game economies, but we have progressively learned about decentralized mechanisms such as co-ownership and their benefits for gamers. With blockchain games, invested players can really earn from their time or financial investment. Governance mechanisms also allow the player community to be heard and impact positively the game development roadmap.”
The closed Alpha of the game will be available early July 2022. Anyone who owns one of the first series of cars will get immediate access to the game. The public release of the game is set for Q4 this year.
“Infinite Drive has game-first engine architecture at its beating heart, combined with the accessibility of mobile free-to-play, play-and-earn, and with unique digital car ownership,” Baudet said. “Web3 also offers tools to reward invested players who are going to organize community racing events and help us make the best driving experience.”
As for the business model, Baudet said, “In my opinion, web3 offers a better-balanced business model between players, investors, and creators. When the game is a success, it should benefit those 3 parties more equally. The play-and-earn races and rental earnings make it more profitable for engaged users. When players are earning, the game becomes viral and less marketing investment is needed to acquire new users.”
A racing metaverse?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Infinite Drive will be a racing metaverse.
I also asked how it was a racing metaverse, as opposed to just a racing game.
“Infinite Drive is more of a digital space dedicated to car fans rather than just a game. At its core are the garages holding users’ NFT car collections, from which they can share their favorite cars with the community,” Baudet said. “It also features the first marketplace dedicated and tailored to new and second hand car NFTs. Today, car fans spend hours browsing websites such as Autotrader to discover hidden gems or rare car models. I’ll be happy if Infinite Drive’s community has fun and spends a significant time browsing through our marketplace content. Lastly, Infinite Drive offers features for users to build communities (Clubs) around interests like car brands or gather to show and test drive their respective cars.”
Baudet also talked about the inspiration for the game.
“Almost 18 years ago, I was running my first game studio, Eden Games. Back then, MMO games were popular and I wanted to build a supercar themed MMO,” Baudet said. “Luckily, Atari, our parent company, had a brand, Test Drive, that kickstarted all the supercar fantasy in video games back in the 1980s. Together with a very talented team, we took that inactive brand and built Test Drive Unlimited, the first massive multiplayer online racing game (MMORG). Even if Test Drive Unlimited introduced multiple innovations to the racing genre, the technology was then too limited to completely realize our vision, and we were just too small a studio to build it all. The Infinite Drive concept is similar to that of Test Drive Unlimited, but this time I want it to be an open platform, so we can achieve it together with partners and the player community.”
Before joining Tiny Digital Factory, key team members worked on numerous successful console and mobile games such as Jurassic Park World, Fallout Shelter, Rollercoaster Tycoon, and Hitman Sniper. Since then, as a company, the company has developed or co-developed numerous games in the racing genre including F1 Mobile Racing (EA), GT Manager (self-published), F1 Delta Time and Revv Racing (both Animoca Brands).
Baudet founded the studio in Montreal in 2015 and opened a second studio in Lyon in 2017, when his associates Pierre Carde (managing director) and Olivier Raffard (licensing and business manager) joined.
GamesBeat's creed when covering the game industry is "where passion meets business." What does this mean? We want to tell you how the news matters to you -- not just as a decision-maker at a game studio, but also as a fan of games. F1 Re-Watch 2022: Round 19 - USA
More mild shock because it’s a race I did remember to watch C4 highlights of!!
Granted, the bulk of my memories around this race were Lewis nearly winning, Seb leading for one (1) lap and Seb and Kevin’s INSANE last lap battle for P8.
Oh and once again everyone wore cowboy hats because Texas
So, grab your team coloured Stetsons and let’s jump in!
I think this race was good?? I mean I hope it is
I actually like COTA as a track, it’s pretty decent (and the best of all the current USA tracks by a mile imho)
(yes I’m saying that despite us being months away from Vegas bc what is the Vegas layout 😭)
Anyway, starting grid whiplash:
“Lots of drivers out of position thanks to penalties” 2015 McLaren Honda flashbacks
ouch Dan P15 & Charles P12.
BUT SEB TOP 10 YEAAAAAAAH BOI
LANCE P5!!!!!!! LEWIS P3!!!!!! INJECT IIIIIIIIIIIIIIT
I love it when the starting grid whiplash is actually nice
“This race could be anyone’s today” Really Crofty??? Really??? When the RB18 exists???
Helmet watch: Lewis’ neon yellow helmet with the purple visor >>>>>>
They had to change Lewis’ brakes before the start???? I really will be taking a sledgehammer to the W13 when I’m finished re-watching 2022
[Start/Lap 1]: Oh... a Merc murdered Sainz at turn 1
or not he’s gotten going he’s just at the back
oh it was Russell erguhaii
The saga of George Russell’s violence against the grid continues
anyway SEB UP INTO P5!!!!!!!!!
THAT’S! MY! BOOOOOOOOOOY!!!!!!!!!
[Lap 2]: aaaaaaand Sainz DNF.
Charles up to P9
LANCE IS IN P3??????
STOP THE RACE
TEAM GREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN 💚💚💚💚💚💚
[Lap 3]: and 5 sec penalty for Russell t-boning Sainz
Meanwhile Albon has no grip, and has dropped to P10 from P8 and has Bottas all up in his business
“The Aston Martin is working well around here” Inject it, frame it, capture it, remember it
the AMR22 is a tractor no more!!!!
“Lightning reactions from Lewis Hamilton” Of course??? He’s a king, tell us something we don’t know
[Lap 5]: No George, don’t overtake Lance. That would be rude.
also boo Perez got past Seb
welp Lance demoted to P4
“Howdy Crofty!” HI TED!!!! 👋
[Lap 6]: aw no Nicky spun 😔
oh Perez’s front wing is not looking healthy, front wing endplate went poof
(Alexa play I Want to Break Free by Queen)
[Lap 7]: Meanwhile Lance and Seb are vibing in P5 and P6 as the unbothered Kings they are 💚
....Lewis is three tenths faster than Verstappen you say???
please tell me we get a Hammertime radio it has been SO LONG
[Lap 8]: I’m ignoring the Ferrari radio that came up telling Charles they’re already thinking about Plan B :))))))))
Perez v Russell... I fear much violence
[Lap 9]: Charles up to P7, the race seems to have calmed down for now
I may cry at the Seb and Charles battle though, I miss them 😭
[Lap 10]: and the gap is down to 8 tenths, @ TV director show me my boys!!!
It’s also seemingly fucking WIMDY at COTA
[Lap 11]: oh the #JustLewisThings of him saying he’s not happy with his tyres then proceeding to set a purple sector, nature is healing
ahhhhhhh there’s Charles v Seb!!!!
The fact that this would have caused me pain in 19 & 20 but now we’re rejoicing. Growth!!
[Lap 12]: Gasly pits, after Bottas pitted the lap before, overcut win!
and back to Charles v Seb
and Charles gets past pretty easily
HAMMERTIME RADIO!!!! IT’S BEEN 84 YEARS!!!!
Bono I’m sending you a basket of the finest pastries AND flowers
[Lap 13]: Lewis pits for hards??? I’m still recovering from the radio message so I’m not fully processing what’s going on
aw Lewis came out behind Seb after pitting
[Lap 14]: Verstappen and Russell pit, also both for hards
oh my days Lance trying to fight him GO ON MY SON
anyway this is a very early pit window, I can only assume it was a bit warm on race day
Charles up into P3, but he’s yet to stop
[Lap 15]: Perez pits for hards also
LANCE P3!!! SEB P4!!!! STOP! THE! RACE!
“Aston Martin running in the top 3 for the first time this season” *longest yeah boi ever*
[Lap 16]: And Lance pits for... mediums
And Lewis got past Seb for P3
and sets the fastest first sector.
Esteban and Mick having a slightly spicy battle, mainly bc Esteban’s car got caught by some wind
[Lap 17]: “Plan E consider” p a i n
I mean at least it came from Charles but Ferrari kindly fuck off
[Lap 18]: Yellow flag sector 3????
oh Bottas is beached in the gravel
OH shit Safety Car
ah AM Safety Car my beloved
Will Ferrari be smart and pit Charles under the SC??
[Lap 19]: THEY DO!!! They found their braincell!!!
“Plan EEEEEEE this is lucky for us!” I love Ted so much
oh Seb pits too!! nice!!
Charles in P4, Seb in P6. WE’RE VIBING FOLKS!!!
oh replay of the George on Sainz violence at the start again
[Lap 20]: First SC at Austin since 2015 apparently, a somewhat fun fact (That was a half wet race iirc??? I’m not sure)
fuck what is this drone footage I’m getting vertigo
Lewis still having brake issues, I will sledgehammer the W13 and then burn it
[Lap 21]: SC ending, boys please don’t be dumb I don’t want any carnage
Lewis the filling in a RBR sandwich... does NOT spark joy
phew no nonsense as of yet
[Lap 22]: SEB TAKES P6!!!!
And Esteban locks up and Mick takes P12
OH SHIT FERNANDO
AND LANCE
NOOOOOO
that was not the fun whiplash fyi
And of course Crofty mentions the fact that we had future teammate on teammate violence
[Lap 23]: Also I’m sorry but Lance’s car is on the track and there’s debris everywhere, where is the red flag?????
...
Not Fernando hitting Lance’s rear and then doing a wheelie
F1 CARS SHOULDN’T DO THAT
that really did not spark joy
the various on-board replays of debris flying everywhere are also not sparking joy
[Lap 24]: This race has been surprisingly eventful despite not having that much actual racing oh my days
Lance walking alone through the paddock... Alonso you can meet my fists
[Lap 25]: SC ending, again boys please DON’T BE DUMB
I am anxious
restart 2 electric boogaloo - so far no carnage
[Lap 26]: “Sebastian Vettel gaining on George Russell” screaming, crying clutching my chest in euphoria
oh he is legit closing up on him
go on Seb, get him!!!
[Lap 27]: 8 tenths of a second gap 👀👀👀
okay the gap is fluctuating between 8 tenths and 1.1 seconds but I’m on full hopium and delusion
[Lap 28]: DRS re-enabled
Nicky fastest on the speed trap. Goatifi intensifies.
also I heard Ted say news from McLaren and I immediately had the ‘McLaren news’ jingle from The Fast and The Curious podcast play in my head thanks Chris Hugill
[Lap 29]: Seb now 2.2 seconds behind Russell, the hopium was fun while it lasted
Charles v Perez???? 👀👀👀👀👀
[Lap 30]: CHARLES WITH THE LUNGE TAKES P3!!!!
woot woooooooot!!!!
“And there’s a lot of fans here that will want to kiss Charles for that” yes and I’m one of them get in line
[Lap 32]: Meanwhile George still has a loose endplate on his front wing after his lap 1 violence
[Lap 33]: Verstappen apparently not very happy with the wind
Oh, Mick and Kevin both in the Top 10!!!! We adore to see it!!!
[Lap 34]: Why are we cutting to Ed Sheeran???? Show me the cars!!!
Mick and Yuki both pit
[Lap 35]: and Lewis pits, undercut maybe??
oh and Yuki’s undercut did work on passing Norris
[Lap 36]: Verstappen pits
and it’s slow 👀
LEWIS TAKES THE NET RACE LEAD
😭🙌
More Perez on Russell fisticuffs
[Lap 37]: ah nvm Russell pits
[Lap 38]: Charles v Verstappen... spicy
both of them are on the mediums while Lewis is on the hards
[Lap 39]: Perez pits
AND SEB TAKES THE LEAD!!!!!
STOP! THE! RACE!!!!
Oh Charles doing the switcheroo on Verstappen, BEAUTIFUL
AND Seb P1, with Lewis P2. I know the end result and I do not care but STOP THE RACE!!
Seb leading his 3,500th lap, I love him so much 😭😭😭😭
[Lap 40]: Cut to Seb in the lead with Lewis P2, feels so good and SO organic
[Lap 41]: Lewis takes the lead, not surprising, but seeing them on track together one last time was very beautiful
and diving head first into the sea of delusion we go Lewis is def gonna win right? 🥲
this race has legit been so fun though
“Good to see Sebastian Vettel up there” preach it Ted!!!!!
[Lap 42]: 15 laps left. yelling.
slow stop for Seb 😭😭😭😭😭😭
16.8 seconds 😭
It’s okay Team Green I still love you
[Lap 43]: no don’t go back to the drone cam it’s not fun
Charles still in DRS range of Verstappen
[Lap 44]: But Verstappen goes half a second quicker than Lewis...
welp
[Lap 45]: Perez going 1.5 secs quicker with a borked front wing??? What is going on in the House of Commons????
Seb watch: in P13 1.6 seconds behind Yuki
Norris v Ocon!!! Beloved midfield spice!!!!
[Lap 46]: Lewis and Verstappen doing almost identical lap times on similar age of tyres, though on different compounds. STRESS.
[Lap 47]: 10 laps left 😬
Gap just under two seconds, love how I’m slightly stressed despite knowing the end podium 😂
It’s the ✨ emotional investment ✨
[Lap 48]: Now would be a great time for another Hammertime radio Bono just saying
SEB ONBOARD
He’s in P12 after Ocon pitted
He’s on the back of a DRS train on fresher tyres LET’S GET IT WELTMEISTER!!!
[Lap 49]: Alonso’s mirror just... fell off????
alrighty then
ughhhhhh Verstappen has DRS
I am stressed Angela and stressed Angela is me
[Lap 50]: Thank you Brundle I really needed you to list all of Verstappen’s car advantages 😭
But more importantly SEB INTO P10 KLAXON!!!!!
...
fuck me I did not breathe during Lewis’ and Verstappen’s battle
Lewis did not give up though and I love him for it
[Lap 52]: SEB INTO P9!!!!!!
and back down to P10, he’s having some fistcuffs with Albon
and round the outside, back into the points, that’s my 4 time world champion
6.3 secs behind Kevin with 4 laps left
It’s fun knowing what happens in advance sometimes
ohhh Seb let Albon back by bc he went off, that’s fair
[Lap 53]: Verstappen assigned track limits criminal by GP, Bono, and Lewis
and then Lewis gets a warning himself svuoheaugh
boys
[Lap 54]: The one positive is that the RBR has not streaked off into the distance, the W13 has some rights.
I mean I’m still going to take a sledgehammer to it though
[Lap 55]: Seb watch: 3.2 seconds behind Kevin now
oh and already down to 2 seconds 👀
gap between Lewis and Max is three seconds though 😭
[Lap 56]: Ignoring the front and watching Seb on the running order, gap down to 1.5 seconds
...now 8 tenths of a second
(I know the overtake is coming but the hype is fun)
[Finish]: Verstappen wins, Lewis P2 and Charles P3!!!
now show me Seb!!!!!
THERE HE IS!!!!!!
go on go on go onnnnn
AND DOWN THE INSIDE HE GOES!!!!!
SEB P8!!!!!!!! THAT’S!!! MY!!!!  BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
elmowithfire.gif
such a peach of a move like... Go off King you dropped this 👑
gonna celebrate with the biscoff ice cream mum just brought me 🥳
Well, that was actually a pretty fun race!!! You didn’t really know who was going to win until the last few laps, which could not be said for a lot of races in 2022 imho. Charles going from P12 to P3 was iconic af, Lewis making the most of his first proper chance in ages for a win was superb, and Seb was just doing iconic Seb shit... AND we got some midfield spice to boot!!
Overall, 8 front wings out of 10. Next race: Mexico!

Biggest Motorsport Moments of 2021
As 2021 comes to an end, I thought it was a good idea to look back on all the great moments we have had this year. Obviously, I will just be chronicling the moments in the sports that I follow, so series such as World Superbikes, Rally Cross and others will not be featured here, so if I miss some out, I do apologise.
Marc Marquez back on top
He may not have fought for the title; however, you cannot deny that for Marc to come back from the injuries he sustained, and the long rehabilitation process he had to endure, was remarkable, even for someone like him. It was clear at the start of the year just how tough it would be for him, and so it took until his stomping ground of Sachsenring, for him to get back to winning ways. The race itself wasn’t a thriller, but seeing him fight off the challengers from behind, showed great resilience, and suggests he isn’t done yet in the sport.
Hypercar Era Begins
It may have flown under the radar slightly, but the new rules which are set to fire Endurance racing back into a golden age have begun. The understated beginning, is because initially only Toyota was running Hypercar entries, fighting off the old LMP1 car, run by Alpine. For Portimao however, Glickenhaus joined the party, and have shown glimpses of pace since then, it still wasn’t a thrilling season in WEC, yet an historic one in terms of the future of the sport.
Historic moment for diversity in NASCAR
For a sport born in the deep south, and with plenty of controversial stories in its past, I felt the most important moment of the NASCAR season, had to be Talladega in October. Yes, we saw drama between Elliot and Harvick, and some other great races, but it wasn’t on a scale that this was, as Bubba Wallace became the first African American driver since 1963 to win a top level NASCAR race. It was made even more poignant, in that he did it at the track where a year before, the whole of NASCAR stood beside him in solidarity for Black Lives Matter.
Monaco E-Prix
Turns out it is possible to have a stunning race around the principality, as we saw passes in many unusual places around the iconic track when Formula E rocked up, for the first time on the full layout. It was a three way fight between Da Costa, Frijns, and Evans, which Antonio eventually won, after making a daring around the outside move on Evans. I hope Formula E comes back every year to Monaco on the full circuit, as the straights are long by Formula E standards, so we get great racing. It also proves that F1 cars are too wide and long.
Blinder by Binder
In a trying year for KTM, Brad did his best to maximise what he had under him. As a result of their lack of pace, in Austria, Binder found himself in a position with nothing to lose, as the rain started to fall with only a few laps to go. He took the gamble to stay on dry tyres, on an increasingly damp track, and used all the skill he had to not only stay on the track, but have enough pace to not be passed by those who changed to wet tyres. He did it to perfection, and if KTM can give him a good bike, watch out for him in 2022.
No go for Evans
Formula E was set for another thrilling season finale, with plenty of drivers in contention. In fact, the amount of them still mathematically in with a shout with 3 races to go was shocking, and if anything, it says more about the problems the sport is having. Nevertheless, after qualifying for the finale, Evans had put himself in prime position for the title, starting in 3rd, ahead of all his title rivals. When it came to the start however, his Jaguar developed an error, and would not move. The stationary Evans was then collected by Mortara who couldn’t see him, which took out another main title rival. The only other real contender was the rookie of Dennis, who was in a position to put De Vries under pressure for the title, until his rear brakes locked when re-gen braking, handing the title to the Dutchman. It was a subdued end to another crazy season, and will still hurt for the 3 drivers who lost it through no fault of their own.
Domination by Van Gisbergen
After the departure of McLaughlin to IndyCar, it was wondered who would take his place as the standard bearer at the front of the grid. Talk pre-season, was that it would be either Waters or Van Gisbergen, or possibly De Pasquale. Within a few races we had a clear answer, as Shayne destroyed everyone to start the season, taking the first 6 wins out of the year, and was consistent all through the season, leading him to win the title before the series went to Bathurst for the 1000. It was a stunning year to watch from him, although, if Waters can get on top of his set ups issues, and De Pasquale can keep up his end of season form, Shayne won’t have it easy in 2022.
A 4th in the 4 time winners club
The Indy 500 is always a special race, and after the underwhelming feeling of the race in 2020, having fans back at the speedway was something special indeed. The fans got their money’s worth too, as they witnessed history, with Helio Castroneves winning it again, and joining a very select club indeed. He thoroughly deserved it, after many years of coming so close in 2014 & 17, and it shows that experience is key in a race like that, as he fought off the young charger, and eventual champion of the series, Palou. Alex should be commended as well, for how he raced the 500, as for only his 2nd time at that race, he performed superbly, and nearly beat Helio.
A monumental season of F1
Yes, there is the grey cloud of the FIA hanging over the season, and it will likely always be there. However, we cannot just think of this season in that way, as some of the races this year were simply stunning. Think of the superb strategy of Red Bull at France, or Mercedes in Bahrain, Hamilton’s come back in Brazil, Alonso in Hungary and Qatar, Ricciardo at Monza, Norris at so many races this year, Leclerc at Silverstone, Vettel at Baku, same with Perez, or Tsunoda in the finale. All those being said, there were really only two truly awe-inspiring moments that in my opinion define the season.
The most obvious is the final lap of the season, as whilst it should never of happened the way it did, at the end of the day it did happen, and gave us a grandstand, winner takes all finish, and it wasn’t a slam dunk for Max to win. I still can’t believe it happened! Even bigger though I think, was the first lap at Silverstone, it was the moment in the season where the fight became personal, between the two teams and drivers, and was what sparked the rivalry and drama which was to follow. That battle almost felt bigger than the title fight, it was about getting inside the other driver’s head, to show who is the top dog in the sport, and neither would relinquish, which led to the end result. It was similar to Spain 2016, yet the outcome was more controversial, because as they weren’t in the same team, it wouldn’t be sorted behind closed doors.
Looking back at 2021, it has been an excellent year of racing, with plenty of great races, which couldn’t all the featured here. Some series where drama was expected, we ended up with a mediocre ending to the campaign, whereas others may have given us a little too much drama. I must commend how all series were able to almost put together a ‘normal’ season in the current circumstances, and hope that 2022 can be even more successful for them!

Formula One: Daniel Ricciardo sends three-word message to Oscar Piastri
Daniel Ricciardo has just three words of advice for his young gun Oscar Piastri as Aussie takes his old seat at McLaren By Ollie Lewis For Daily Mail Australia Published: 07:28 EST, 9 February 2023 | Updated: 07:28 EST, 9 February 2023 Daniel Ricciardo has implored Oscar Piastri to relish every moment of his Formula One career as the young Australian attempts to make a big splash in the sport this season. Ricciardo, 33, will have to watch on from the sidelines this year after being dumped by McLaren following a poor 2022 campaign. The fan-favourite has since re-joined Red Bull as the world champions' third driver. McLaren turned to exciting young talent Piastri to replace Ricciardo, and although his deal was cut short to make way for the F2 and F3 world champion, Ricciardo bears no ill-will towards his fellow countryman. Late last year, the pair were spotted driving around Melbourne together and Ricciardo has spoken in glowing terms of Piastri's obvious talent. Now the 33-year-old has sent a three-word message to Piastri as he prepares for his maiden campaign: 'Just enjoy it'. Daniel Ricciardo has implored Oscar Piastri to enjoy every moment of his F1 career The Australians are good mates and were spotted driving around Melbourne last year 'We spoke a little bit towards the end of last year, and I don't want to say, 'Oh, I think he'll do this or that' because I don't know the truth of how he's going to go – but I also don't want to add any more pressure on him,' Ricciardo said via WWOS. 'It's really just on him to get involved in the sport, build himself up, learn, progress, and also just enjoy it. 'It's a big, big opportunity. There haven't been many Australians to get this far before, so ultimately, he needs to find that part of it as well where he can just enjoy it. 'Obviously, I wish him well, but I really can't predict or say, 'Oh, he'll do this or that'. We'll wait and see but I hope he finds himself having fun and has a smooth first season.' Piastri is well-prepared for his F1 debut, having clocked up thousands of kilometres during testing with Alpine and McLaren. The 21-year-old is managed by former Red Bull ace Mark Webber.  Share or comment on this article: Formula One: Daniel Ricciardo sends three-word message to Oscar Piastri via Formula One | Mail Online https://www.dailymail.co.uk?ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490&ito=1490

Porsche Controls the Future for Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, and Lamborghini
It may be that all’s well that ends well, but at this point, it is difficult to predict what shape the end will assume. The “end,” in this case, is the point in time when the reorganization of the VW group’s luxury and sports car division, as masterminded by Porsche, is complete and fully functional.
The plan is for Porsche to coordinate the future activities (and to control the flow of revenues) of Lamborghini, Bentley, and Bugatti. The marques will share architectures and componentry, and pool their efforts to address essential challenges like electrification, digitalization, and autonomous driving.
In the wake of this major strategic revision, Porsche has announced that it intends to cut costs at a rate of $2.3 billion per year until 2022. The money saved will be instantly reinvested in new technologies most of which happen to have a low return on investment. The key efficiency gains will be had in improvements to research and development, procurement, and production.
OLD TROOPERS AND THE NEW GUARD FIGHT IT OUT The premium brands are run by Bram Schot (who replaced Rupert Stadler at Audi), Oliver Blume (Porsche), Adrian Hallmark (who took over from Wolfgang Dürheimer at Bentley) and Stephan Winkelmann (Bugatti).
The dark horse on the management carousel is Peter Duesmann who will join VW when his retention period expires in summer 2020. The ex-BMW top manager has three options: he could replace a potentially underperforming Bram Schot at Audi, he could become COO of the VW group, or he could step in for Oliver Blume at Porsche.
As always, the strings are going to be pulled by the supervisory board, which is controlled by the Porsche and Piech families. In a rare show of agreement, they want to promote Porsche chairman Blume to the board of the VW group. Blume’s successor may be Duesmann, who has a strong motorsport track record and is a dyed-in-the-wool car guy. Schot is said to be safe in his position at Audi at the moment, but he must get the brand back in shape—or the board will find a new number one.
HOW NOT TO HANDLE A LUXURY BRAND From Wolfsburg’s vantage point, Audi is a potential future casualty—not least because of Dieselgate—but right now the biggest problem child is Bentley. According to a German business weekly, the Bentley boys are currently losing nearly $20,000 on every vehicle sold. In the first half of 2018, losses amounted to more than $90 million as sales fell by 15 percent. If Adrian Hallmark increases the marque’s annual output from about 10,500 to 15,000 units, he would likely only repeat the mistakes made by every Bentley boss since the departure of Franz-Josef Paefgen. Volume is a blessing and a curse for every luxury brand. Flooding the dealers with hard-to-sell stock, counter-productive rapid-succession facelifts, embarrassing design issues (Bentayga, Mulsanne), and a total lack of low-emissions engines, hybrids, or electric vehicles is bound to stifle demand, ruin resale values, and put an emphasis on the “olde” in Bentley’s olde worlde brand image. The fact that Audi is not getting its act together in terms of Crewe-bound future-emissions-ready engines only adds insult to injury.
BUGATTI IS BACK ON TRACK—WITH A VENGEANCE Perhaps messieurs Winterkorn, Müller, or Diess should have put Stephan Winkelmann in charge of the Bentley, Bugatti, and Lamborghini triplets, and made Oliver Blume run the Audi & Porsche Show.
Winkelmann is feared for his crackdown management style, the ruthless pursuit of a chosen target, and his egocentric personality. But let´s face it: Lamborghini owes what it is today to the fit and fashion-conscious tri-lingual Berlin-born jack-of-all-trades. Although his interregnum at Audi Sport lasted only a year, he kicked off three projects that may put the rudderless appendix back on track. At Bugatti, he stepped in for Wolfgang Dürheimer whose legacy was the amazing Chiron. Instead of leaning back and watching 70 cars a year leave les ateliers in Molsheim, Winkelmann once again switched to attack mode. The Divo, to be built by Italdesign, was his first attention-grabbing product, and there will be more.
Insiders are expecting a limited run of aerodynamically advanced lightweight Superleggeras, an even more track-oriented Chiron SS, and a completely re-skinned targa-top Chiron Aperta. In addition, Bugatti is reportedly pondering an all-electric high-end model, which may materialize in cooperation with Porsche, Rimac, and Dallara.
A DARK HORSE BY THE NAME OF LAMBORGHINI Rumor has it that Lamborghini will soon be transferred from Audi ownership to the luxury and sport division masterminded by Porsche. The ambitious completion date is Jan 1, 2019. If the tall legal hurdles posed by Italian corporate law can be overcome, Ducati Enterprises would be the new holding company representing the group’s remaining interests in Italy. Stefano Domenicali who used to run Ferrari’s F1 team, remains Lamborghini chairman with Maurizio Reggiani as his CTO. The revised game plan caught Audi and Lamborghini with surprise—and at a critical point in time for the Raging Bull’s future product portfolio.
You see, the Italians had hoped to complete the Aventador and Huracán replacements before the Zuffenhausen bean counters could intervene. Since both models were to share their monofuselage carbon fiber architecture, the ragazzi from Sant’Agata would have been all but untouchable by Porsche’s synergy-creating aspirations for the next ten years. Will that happen? Possibly.
Although the next-generation Aventador has been pushed back to 2022, the project is thought to be too far down the road to be revoked. It’s a wild-looking thing, overtly aggressive and expressively stylish, a badass wedge adorned with plenty of trademark Y symbols. The modular monofuselage can be divided in three elements: the front axle driven by two electric motors, the backbone center section that houses the batteries, and the drivetrain assembly comprising V-12 engine, new dual-clutch Getrag transmission, third e-motor, and rear suspension.
Still normally aspirated, the modified V-12 will be good for around 770 hp. Add 300 kW (402 hp) of electric power, and you’re looking at nearly 1,200 hp without pulling out all the stops. Since there is no way this monster machine DNA can be integrated in a rival VW group architecture, the flagship will almost certainly proceed as planned.
A similar carbon fiber layout is in the works for the next Huracán, which also remains faithful to its non-turbo engine. The upgraded 5.2-liter V-10 is said to be good for 650 hp. Thanks to a 250 kW (335 hp) electric power boost, Lamborghini’s AWD bestseller should be able to keep up with the Ferrari 488.
It will, however, be important to come to grips with the weight penalty caused by energy cells, motors, and performance electronics. In addition, the monofuselage hardware is still way over budget, and there are no obvious scale effects with respect to Audi and Porsche.
So what to do? Right now, the decision makers are looking at two alternatives. Option one is to keep Huracán in lock-step with the R8, but this approach works only if Audi actually wants a new R8, and if this R8 comes with a watertight business case. Option two is to create a new aluminum-intensive modular multi-brand sports car architecture to open up a broader scope of opportunities. The latter route may be the most likely.
ADVANCED GERMAN ENGINEERING AT A CROSSROADS Internally known as Mimo II, this electrified lightweight structure would be developed by Porsche for the repeatedly delayed Ferrari 488 fighter known as the 960. The same Mimo II architecture could also see use in the future Huracán and the R8 replacement, with expectations of a 650-hp V-8 PHEV powertrain. Electrification is the catchword here. You see, Mimo II is flexible enough to cater for ICE, HEV, PHEV, and BEV applications.
To keep complexity at bay, we hear that the J1 platform prepared for the Porsche Taycan will, for cost reasons, remain a one-off, which is another way of saying that it and any successor are all but dead for group use. The rumored SPAZ and SPE future architectures may share a similar fate, since the research and development wizards reckon that the existing MMB/MHB platforms can be electrified at relatively little expense. In essence, this would leave the group with three premium components sets: PPE/PPC for larger cars and SUVs; Monofuselage or Mimo for high-performance sports cars; and MMB/MHB evo for Cayman and 911.
Audi may replace the R8 with one of three options, including an all-electric PB18-inspired car, a Huracán II derivative, or a Mimo II-based sports car, but since no decision has been made, we’re not going to see anything in the flesh before 2022.
Alternatively, the R8 could simply go away. An intriguing, equally unconfirmed alternative is the recreation of the iconic Ur-Quattro, which could be a synthesis of the many show cars Audi has devoted to this theme. Another possibility is said to be a limited-edition supercar described as a TT RS on steroids. Radically aggressive in appearance and fitted with a 500-hp-plus five-cylinder turbo engine, this 2+2-seater may indeed have what it takes to replace the R8.
Yet another alternative is an ultra-lightweight high-performance two-seater halo car, assembled by a coachbuilder at no more than 500 units in total—think super-R8. Last but not least, there is the striking zero-emission 400-kW (536 hp) Audi e-tron GT shooting brake, which shares its genetic material with the Porsche Taycan and the Bentley Barnato—though remember our previous caveat about the viability of the J1 architecture.
Lamborghini will add an Urus plug-in hybrid in 2020 and facelift the Urus in 2022. There will be no Urus coupé, but we do expect an Urus Performante range-topper. What about a fourth model range? Not in the foreseeable future. The closest thing to a fourth Lambo was the 2008 Estoque, which ticked all the boxes when there was still a market for ultra-high-performance saloons.
If Lamborghini ever does extend its line-up, it will probably by a potent four-seater, two-door, Espada-style luxury GT based on the upcoming PPE/PPC platform. Beyond that, the folks in Sant’Agata are still keen on extreme one-offs like Egoista and Terzo Millenio; exclusive, tailor-made editions of no more than 20 units such as Veneno and Sesto Elemento; and limited-edition hypercars like the Aventador SVJ. Currently in the works are said to be a Paris-Dakar Huracán and a de-contented rear-wheel drive Aventador Ultima.
Porsche is about to release the next 911, dubbed 992. Originally, this was meant to be the final iteration of the MHB toolkit, but since the 992 architecture can accommodate PHEV componentry, we would not be surprised to see it live on in modified form. While the 992 retains the classic rear-engine layout, the still-pending 960 would be a mid-engine coupé featuring a six-cylinder boxer and a 200-kW (268-hp) electric front-wheel drive system.
Although Porsche has allegedly signed off the Boxster/Cayman replacement (codenamed 983), it’s another low-margin project because the segment is in free fall. We hear that 983 is package-protected for a straight-five engine in case Audi feels like replacing the TT with a proper sports car.
Rumor also has it that Porsche is investigating an all-electric sports car scenario. Derived from the MMB components set, there is talk of a neo-Cayman E (two motors good for 400 hp, 100-kWh battery) and a neo-919 E (three motors rated at 600 hp, 125 kWh battery).
IN HINDSIGHT, YOU ARE NOT ALWAYS WISER While Porsche’s return on investment is second only to Ferrari, Audi is seriously overstaffed and worryingly over budget. Would it not have made more sense to put Audi and Porsche together in one cooperative group, while creating a separate, partly autonomous subdivision for Bentley, Bugatti, and Lamborghini?
Audi and Porsche are the biggest earners within the VW group, and already share heavily in terms of technology and development. In a nutshell, Audi needs Porsche more than Porsche needs Audi, but they still both need each other.
