Emma by Jane Austen - Illustrated by Hugh Thomson (1896)

She's here, I'm so excited! I spent too much money (well not as much as I could) but I managed to snag a 1896 copy of the Hugh Thomson illustrated edition of Emma. Apart from the spine she's in a relatively good condition for her age and is very much readable if I felt so inclined - I have no intentions considering this is my 8th copy of Emma. Anyway here's the promised photos.

I love the catalogue at the back to advertising what Macmillan had for sale in 1896, and the tiny ticks that clearly mark books the original owner (Henrietta) either bought or wanted.

My only real complaint is I couldn't afford the fancy edition with the gold gilding, this one:

But even my bad financial decisions can only go so far (one day I'll find one I can afford!) In the end though it doesn't really matter and I'm very, very pleased with my latest edition to my growing collection of Emma. Next on my list is a copy with the C. E. Brock illustrations!

Colin from Accounts (prod. Harriet Dyer & Patrick Brammall).

This Australian romantic comedy series bursts with charm from the random coupling of its two flawed lead characters in the show's first moments. Dyer and Brammall have impeccable chemistry and are both appealing foils as unlikely love interests. It's a comforting watch with inventive takes on the well-worn opposites attract rom-com formula. Filled with plenty of heart, it certainly sidesteps the trickiness of its premise revolving around accidentally injuring a dog.

I'm still putting together my photos & videos from the Singapore GP but in the meantime, here are some incredible women in motorsport!

[1-5] I managed to catch some W-Series drivers outside their paddock: Jessica Hawkins, Emma Kimiläinen, Jamie Chadwick and Juju Noda. Also met Charlotte Sefton (who y'all might remember as Lando's wrangler lol) and I wasn't sure if she'd be comfortable taking photos (a lot of team members usually decline because they're working which is fine!) but she seemed surprised to be recognised and very kindly stopped to say hi.

[6] Laura Winter has been such a welcome addition to the official F1 coverage and I love her outfits so much omg. It was so nice to meet her because thanks to her I got to show Esteban my collage the weekend he won the Hungarian GP. Also she was so sweet in her reply after I tweeted this photo.

[7] I find Alex Thomson's journey to working in F1 very inspiring and she's so humble and self-deprecating despite her sizable social media following. When I asked for a photo she was literally like "who, me? 🥺", definitely an inspiration for anyone who aspires to work in the media side of F1.

[8] I'm such a fan of Naomi Schiff and I was worried I wouldn't be able to get a picture with her because she was in a rush but she was so so so so kind to turn back so we could take this. 😭♥️ Love her so much and hope we get to see more of her presenting.

[9-10] This is Jennifer, it was her first time marshalling at the Singapore GP (which has the highest number of female marshals among all the GPs I believe) and I took some photos and videos of/for her because they're not allowed to (except for the drivers' parade). We started talking after she tried to duck out of my camera's view but I honestly didn't mind because this last shot reminded me of my favourite shot from the 2017 race which also had 2 female marshals looking on to the track.

Aside from the literary reference, the project is also said to draw elements from Emma Stone’s 2010 teen comedy-drama Easy A as well as Julia Stiles’s 10 Things I Hate About You, which premiered in 1999 and has since become one of the most beloved rom-coms of all time. Could anyone have predicted this mix of references? Probably not. Are we more than on board with the idea? Absolutely yes.

Nobody wants a Pride And Prejudice remake and this is sabotaging it on purpose. P&P is like the only 90’s Austin movie most people have seen and The Netherfeild Girls is also a movie so you’re just begging comparison like just stoooopppppp remake sense and sensibility instead. The movie was good too but it didn’t have Keira knightly in it

Many people have that one person in their family they simply cannot stand. This type of person doesn’t even have to be cruel or extremely stupid, but there is just something about them that makes you roll your eyes uncontrollably every time you see them. For Charlotte, such a person was her brother-in-law: Joseph Harris.

Again, Joseph may not have been the nicest person, but he also wasn't someone who could be compared to evil stepmothers mistreating some orphans. (Which was a bit annoying, because since Charlotte had to be an orphan, she could at least be a tragic fictional character.)

But no, honestly speaking Joseph Harris was only slightly stupid and very annoying. And now he was talking to the headmaster, while Charlotte was anxiously waiting for him to leave the office and take her home, where she would probably be lectured about her behavior.

“Thank you, Mr. Phillips. And I am once again sorry for her behavior. No, no. Do not worry. My wife and I understand your decision perfectly. Maybe she will learn some good manners at home and the stupidity will disappear from her mind. Have a good day.” Charlotte tensed a bit when she heard Joseph's voice, and then she saw her brother-in-law leaving the office. At the same moment, Emma grabbed her arm, pulling her towards her, and Charlotte exactly knew what she wanted her to do. Both girls smiled, forming a unity against the men.

“Mr. Harris” Emma started. “Good to see you. Is that a new hat? Very lovely!”

The man frowned.

For some unknown reason, Joseph had a really strong opinion on modern hats – he always complained they did not suit his face and felt annoyed at every compliment about hats. Or maybe he just hated hats. Emma knew this very well, of course, but he had no idea about it.

“Yes, thank you” he sighed, clearly tired with this whole situation. “Charlotte, let's go. We have a train and I've already wasted enough time because of your ideas.”

Charlotte looked at Emma and hugged her tightly.

“Emma…” she started, but her friend stopped her.

“Don't say goodbye. We will see each other again. We will always be friends, right?”

“Always” agreed Charlotte, holding back tears. “I will write letters to you. I promise.”

Emma smiled, and hugged her one more time.

“Great. I have to go to class now. But I'll see you soon. And remember. I will always be there for you.”

“Youthful friendships are so silly,” said Joseph when Emma finally left. “In two years, you probably won't remember who she was, but now you're acting like the world is ending."

Charlotte rolled her eyes. Why on earth was he so annoying? Unfortunately he did not stop talking.

"Come on now. You already caused us too many problems. I don't want to miss the train because of you”

But Charlotte didn't feel like leaving. Was this really the end of her story here? It was too soon. She wanted to go to another class. Spend time with Emma and Bessie. Talk to a few other people. Ask Mrs. Thomson why she didn't say anything when she was accused of lying. Unfortunately, it was too late for that.

With tears in her eyes, Charlotte left the school.

Last movie/TV show: I can’t remember to save my life when I last watched something. Probably a cartoon the last time I did a babysitting? Can you tell I am not a cinephile?

Next on my watch list: Sense and Sensibility with Kate Winslet and Emma Thomson, and the only reason I can tell you that so certainly is bc I planned to watch it with a friend tomorrow.

Last game: the Sims, maybe? Not a gamer

Sweet/savoury/spicy: sweet! I have a huge sweet tooth despite sugar being bad for my health issues 🥲

Relationship status: I’m planning to buy a new plushie as soon as I can find a store that sells my favourite brand. Also plant mum of a few dying potted flowers 😅

Last online search: who are you to ask? The FBI? A honey cake recipe if you really need to know.

Current obsession: obscure Russian and Czech musicals based on Tolkien

Greatest flaw: Anxiety, but idk if it’s really a flaw, more a crippling curse. I can get bossy/very picky about things.
