Hi~! I'm the curious anon that asked about your thoughts & trajectory on Yuzu. I really appreciated your answer. Similarly, I'd like to ask you the same about Patrick. Although you don't post a lot about him, it seems your thoughts about him changed over the years also. Please give your opinion on him as a competitor, as a skater & his collective senior programs (that you've seen)? At his retirement, do you think he reached his potential competitively? (although everyone always has room to grow)

patrick…my feelings about patrick basically did a complete 180 over the course of the last 8 years, lol. when i first watched him at the vancouver olympics, i rooted for him because he was chinese-canadian without knowing anything about him. then from 2010-2012 or so i didn’t like him at all. i wasn’t into his skating, he had an unfortunate case of foot-in-mouth syndrome, he often won competitions with mistakes and there was a sense that he was overscored. (mind, during that period of time i didn’t actually understand skating very well so i was at least partially influenced by the prevailing fandom tides.)

2012-13 was the season when i started to warm up to him. he had two great programs that year - elegie and la boheme - and he was gradually improving as a performer. patrick always had divine skating skills but when he was younger, his upper body, arms and hands were stiff and unattractive. and i personally thought his earlier programs were pretty boring (though in hindsight, his 11-12 fs wasn’t bad). i think the fact that he was often up against daisuke takahashi, an extremely charismatic and versatile skater, left a worse impression of patrick in my mind than how it might’ve been if dai hadn’t been around.

post-sochi patrick turned me into a fan for real. almost all of my favorite programs from him - the chopin fs, a journey, blackbird, dust in the wind and hallelujah - came after sochi and after he took a break from skating. at the same time, i had learned much more about skating and was able to better appreciate patrick’s technical skill and the quality of his skating. his upper body movements improved immensely, he paid more attention to the nuances of his music, and he just had better programs in general. post-sochi patrick was older, more mature, more comfortable in his expression. his interpretation gained a ease and sincerity that i didn’t feel was there when he was younger. i was only able to see him compete live once, the 2016 skate canada men’s free skate, but he’s one of the skaters who left the biggest impression on me, even when he made mistakes on his jumps. his speed and glide was unreal, and most importantly i could feel a connection to his skating that wasn’t there before.

by the time patrick retired he was one of my favorite skaters in the field and certainly one of the most polished and complete skaters, disaster jumps aside (sob). ironically, i thought he was overscored when he was younger but underscored when he was older. he deserved those points and more, by the end. i wish the qualities that i admired in him post-sochi had manifested themselves earlier, and it also would’ve been nice if he hadn’t recycled programs so often, but it is what it is. i think patrick left a strong legacy as one of canada’s most successful and influential male skaters, one of the best examples of basic skating skills in the current era, someone who led the charge towards greater technical difficulty in base value, GOE, and overall program composition, and towards the end of his career, as a well-respected artist and performer. his career wasn’t without low points and some controversial results, but in the long run it doesn’t really matter. i’ll definitely remember him fondly, and there are some programs of his that i rewatch often without ever getting tired of them.
