Drew this to facilitate class discussion on ergonomics for digital illustration, but y’all can have it too.
Honestly this is mostly a note to self.

@austintrashman What do glasses/vision correction look like for the BYG aliens?
Along with laser eye surgery and contact lenses, there's various ways to fit glassware (or otherware) onto an alien's face. Also I included some image examples of non-vision correcting goggles for funsies.
Tumblr media
The most accessible glassware option for nedal is to install a ring around the eye stalk and fit a removable lens in front of it. One or both eyes may need a correctional lens. Fancier designs fully enclose the eye in a case that can come in various fashionable colors or shapes.
Tumblr media
Glasses for massakas are fit around the head with an elastic strap. They can be made fashionable with jingling and dangling tassels and bells hanging off the sides.
Tumblr media
A harness is used to hold up correctional lenses for delorix. The harness pictured above is a basic plant leather strap with metal holding the lenses, but they can come other colors and with decorative elements.
Tumblr media
The oldest glasses design for zrai were invented by nedal for the "uplifted" zrai living among them, worn by the female at the bottom of the above image. It stays put while the upper jaw opens and closes for speech or eating. Since zrai have no arms (or much any usable appendages) It's a fairly impractical design since it requires another helper to strap it on and off using the handle on the top of the head. This antique design is really only worn by mature females living closely with their harem of males who are available to assist putting them on and off, considered by them to be fancy vintage items. The male at the top of the image meanwhile, is wearing the more practical and modern design invented by zrai. They're metal glasses that attach via magnetic buttons installed onto the face. Only a flick of the tongue on either handle is needed to put them on or take them off.
Tumblr media
Smazels have the most complex compound lenses for their compound eyes. Each glass monocle has over a hundred correctional lenses that are painstakingly fitted for the individual, especially if by hand. Because smazel vision isn't all that advanced to begin with, and because it's enough of a hassle to commission these, that smazels without easy access computers and item printers just go without, relying instead on smell and vibrations to walk and fly around.

How do you sleep? In what position? I got curious after discovering that some people suffer from sleep paralysis when resting on their backs. Also that the way I personally sleep is memable.
Now I want to know more.
Fellow Corpse sleepers, rise up.
As always with polls please reblog for size!

The Dvorak keyboard layout isn't appreciably better than QWERTY, a fact which is well-known by people who fetishize epistemic hygiene.
But the process of switching to Dvorak has a real advantage almost totally unrelated to the layout itself: you learn to use it.
You probably think you already know how to use a QWERTY keyboard. And you probably do! (I'm sure someone is interacting with Tumblr solely through speech-to-text, or something, but that person also isn't switching to Dvorak.)
But you probably don't know how to use a QWERTY keyboard well, unless you've put real time and work into training your typing mechanics. And if you haven't done that already, doing it now seems unappealing, because you already know how to type.
But if you switch to Dvorak, you know you're going to have to learn new typing habits. And so you'll put ten or twenty hours into retraining your typing, and at the end of it you'll be a better typist in the new paradigm than you were in the old one. That makes sense!
The missing bit is, you'd probably benefit just as much from twenty hours of retraining in QWERTY.

how some don’t understand         that we can miss people         next to us
how space disappears by sitting            with someone in a car              not saying
anything          because
when we step      too close to bliss        our bodies stop         to wonder   if they
have to              jump-start         our atoms again

After a year's worth of experimentation I've come to the conclusion that current trends in ergonomic keyboard/mouse design may actually be making things worse. Like, yes, vertical mice and those split keyboards with the big bump in the middle and whatnot may offer a more natural resting forearm rotation, but they also ensure that if your typing posture rests any amount of your forearm's weight whatsoever on your hands, 100% of that mechanical stress ends up concentrated on the pinkie side of your wrist. Do you want ulnar nerve compression? Because that's how you get ulnar nerve compression.

People have always said I have a weird pencil grip, and its come up more during my recent work training. I do find my pencil digs hard into the side of my middle finger.
People out there who know things about pencil hand grips or whatever, is this weird? Am I destroying my wrist with this? I honestly can't make myself write/draw any differently.

At work they were selling/throwing away a bunch of organization and ergonomic stuff so we were allowed to take as much as we wanted. I got two platforms for my laptop and monitor, some paper organizers, shelves, and a lil back cushion. My desk is so nice n clean now I even have a spot to display bones! Also caraibeners are the most useful accessibility tool I'm using two to hang up my vests/hats/field bag cause I don't have any actual hooks. I also use a carbineer to clip my water bottle and fan to my overalls so I don't have to carry them. Now I wish I had a setup like this at home, it makes doing work not painful and torturous.

BTW, gamers using nursing pillows for gaming has gotten noticeable enough that instagram has insisted on showing me several ads over the last couple of days about how breastfeeding pillows aren't GOOD ENOUGH and you NEED to buy the special gaming pillow to game.
Fuck that. Keep buying the breast feeding pillow. The prices aren't wildly different; I just hate when someone creates a "specialty" product that is not widely needed. I'm basing this on the number of people who I have recently seen talking about using breast feeding pillows for gaming or crocheting or knitting. I looked up both types of pillow, and it just smells like a fucking scam to buy a "gaming" pillow so you can say it's a "gaming" pillow not a breast feeding pillow.
Buy the boob feed pillow.
