Two Midshipmen dirks with two gorgets, Royal Netherlands Navy, late 19th century
The first dirk belonged to Theodoor H.H. Bodele, commissioned as an ensign in 1895. The second belonged to Baron Elisa C.U. Calkoen, who never received a commission and left the naval college in 1888 as a naval cadet, 2nd class

Today I've sent a email to the archives of the royal navy. I have two great-grandfather's and two great-great-grandfather's who have served in the navy.
They all have served pre WWII. One great-grandfather was stationed in Surabaya, Dutch East Indies. Just before WWII, he and his wife and daughter were sent back home.
Tumblr media
To find out about what they have been through and where they have served, I need to take a look in their files.
So I've sent a email to request access to the archives.
A reply can take up to 5 weeks.
So I'll have to wait patiently.

“Japs Press Forward on Four Fronts,” Windsor Star. February 11, 1942. Page 1. ---- FORCES of Nippon pushed relentlessly forward in the Far East on these four fronts: (1) at Singapore, Jap invaders reached outskirts of the city; (2) in Burma, enemy thrust at Toungoo was new threat to road to China; (3) on Bataan Peninsula, MacArthur's forces met fierce attacks; (4) in Dutch East Indies, Japs drove toward Bandjermasin and Macassar. Allied air aid would have to come some 1,200 miles from Rangoon, 600 from Batavia to hit Singapore invaders. (Acme Map.)
