hlvrai thoughts on my brain. i feel like coomer and benrey have some very similar Fears. i think they both don’t want The Video Game to end. but as for why? well for both of them it’s different

looking at coomer, it’s clear in his fight scene that he wants to escape the game; that he’s terrified there’s nothing beyond black mesa. he needs his life to have meaning and is horrified when he perceives it has none, at least not compared to gordon.

benrey constantly tries to get the group to head back and asks them to stop shooting at him not NECESSARILY because he’s at the Horrible Whims of the Game’s Code or anything, but because going forward would be literally advancing the plot. which is further to The End.

i feel like coomer and benrey could very reasonably share the same belief- one that coomer expresses in his ending speech (“and now i imagine you’ll turn [the video game off]. move on with your life.) coomers view of The Player has become quite optimistic, but throughout the speech he’s still not so transparently begging The Player to take the science team with them and not leave them here. and so benrey could easily not want the final battle to come to a close because he too believes that after the game ends, the player will move on

but UNlike coomer, i don’t think benrey wants to escape. i think he LIKES the story of the video game. i just think he wants to keep it going FOREVER. like he says in act 4- “i just want to play games with people, man”. he clearly ENJOYS antagonizing gordon and being a security guard, it’s fun for him, so that’s why i could never buy the Reluctant Antagonist Benrey idea. he always says gordon needs to calm down too so clearly he doesn’t take much stuff very seriously, which could definitely include his own sentience as an ai

so yea. i think both coomer and benrey don’t want the story to end, but coomer wants to escape the story and benrey wants to embody the story

So! This is a prime opportunity to call hlvrai fans to my thoughts for hl2vrai, with my extended knowledge of the half life LORE

So, we were told half life 2 took place in 2020 in the main timeline, for hlvrai, that’s when the black mesa incident happened-

Hlvrai 1 - 2020

Gordon has been gone for 20 years, he kinda fucked off and didn’t listen to Dr coomer’s request- shame on gordo’s

According to coomer it’s 2040 now, so the 20 years of Gordo gone has passed.

Coomer seems to be recently arriving in city 17, probably to join bubby in the teleport lab

Tommy has been hired into the family business, so he’s probably gonna be our greeter for hl2vrai, like Gman waking up Gordon in half life 2

No clue where benrey is, so he might be gone still, unless Wayne’s pulling a “shit I stole from popular au’s” thing and making benrey possess Barney Calhoun /hj

Alyx and Breen are gonna be important, and I think Kleiner and Eli might be too, given that. But we’ll see come next year

We pray for Holly’s Wi-Fi when it comes out, however

*rubs hands together like a mad scientist* Oh I do...

Bubby and Coomer are around the same age, though Bubby has not been out of his tube for long.

Bubby just is his name.

Bubby was supposed to be both the ultimate lifeform and a brilliant scientist, but was not allowed out of the tube until he proved himself as smart as they wanted him to be

This resulted in him being such a hothead about himself

Black Mesa's higher-ups didn't really see him as a person, either.

Dr Coomer has known Bubby since his 30's, and was always the most patient and encouraging of him.

The day Bubby was released, Coomer was there.

Coomer managed to convince everyone else that in order to really learn, Bubby had to be hands-on. This is how he finally was released

This is also true, he learns better with his hands.

Dr Coomer's parents were volunteers of an experiment, and so he has Xen DNA in his system. Whether he knows is unclear.

Coomer is fluent in Sweet Voice (how Gordon never saw that is a mystery), and teaches Bubby how to read it as well

Once everyone is out of Black Mesa, they all have to bunk at Tommy's house since the Science Team had all lived in dorms inside the building.

While there, everyone steadily grows closer to each other.

Dr Coomer basically adopts everyone else. Bubby becomes their "disgruntled" grandpa.

He actually cares a great deal about everyone else, but he struggles with showing it.

Once introduced to video games, Bubby adores them. Because of this, Dr Coomer slowly finds himself enjoying them as well.

Dr Coomer's robotic limbs are cold when he's not moving. Bubby loves that about him.

Coomer throws science out of his life as much as he can, only engaging in it when he needs to.

Bubby, however, still loves science. He finds himself trying to DIY technology and inventing things.

When Bubby does finally psych himself up enough to apologize to Gordon about the whole betrayal thing, Dr Coomer is right there beside him

Dr Coomer winds up introducing Bubby to surface life in general.

Bubby finds he likes the ocean, too.

Dr Coomer much prefers the wilderness, while Bubby prefers open spaces to see the stars

They start dating once they're on the surface together

Their relationship is very healthy. They do argue every now and then, but it's usually never serious.

If it is serious, Dr Coomer has patience enough for the both of them to figure it out

Part of Dr Coomer's arc continues after Black Mesa. He suddenly wonders, if this really IS a video game, is that why he loves ropes so much? Was he supposed to die to one???

Bubby is able to calm him down, telling him that that just means Coomer is one smart sonuvagun to avoid that for so long.

You will often find both of them outside, usually on a park bench somewhere.

I think the idea of Dr Coomer and Bubby not having object permanence is the funniest thing.. Like a silly Headcanon that just once someone or something is missing, its like gone for the time where they can’t see it. But I feel like Dr Coomer’s would be bit more worse than Bubby’s? Maybe its the AI in them but it’s quite silly. Like for Bubby’s its more of an ADHD thing where when he loses something and its right in front of him, its like “Oh its gone now, oh well” and moving on and like someone points it out hes just like.. “Oh well I knew that.” HEHE IDK IF THIS MAKES ANY SENSE ITS A SILLY THING I’VE THOUGHT ABOUT FOR A BIT *GIGGLE*

i don’t think that dr. coomer is actually a good guy, i think that it’s just his code making him be friendly and helpful because that is how he is supposed to be in the game. but sometimes it breaks and his true self shows, like his whole thing about “a world in your dreams” and “wanting to go there” and his self awareness obviously Getting to him, and all the clones attacking gordon. you can see throughout the series that coomer often shifts to a hostile temperament seemingly out of nowhere. additionally, i believe that dr coomer is just party just using gordon throughout the adventure just to get out of the game.

here’s the original note i made which maybe makes more sense. this is just one theory/headcanon out of the 1k+ word hlvrai note i have lmk if u wanna hear more

HLVRAI headcanons I've come up with (feat. one my archnemesis came up with that I stole. You know who you are (lovingly).

Benry can digest literally anything. Any-thing. This also means that his stomach acids are so volatile that god forbid he ever hack up any bile because it will melt through the floors, and through people. Thankfully it's nigh impossible to make that dude feel nauseous. He could eat drywall every day and he'd be fine.

Tommy made temporary tattoos of the Wikipedia logo that the entire Science Team are prone to wearing sometimes. By temporary, I mean "they don't come off for absolute ages unless you use industrial cleaner on your skin".

Once out of Black Mesa, Bubby uses his car powers to run over people he doesn't like. Like the dude at Kroger who told him that they don't have any rocket fuel for sale. This has surprisingly not killed anyone yet. Emphasis on the yet.

Even outside of Black Mesa, Gordon wears the HEV suit most of the time, because it protects him from dangers, and makes him feel slightly safer existing in the general vicinity of the rest of the team. He has been banned from at least 1 public library for being too loud because of this, as the HEV suit is loud as fuck in a quiet library every time he moves.

Benry adores cool ranch doritos and riots every time the Science Team's shared wreck of a house runs out of said doritos. Now there's an emergency bag of doritos tucked under Gordon's bed at all times in case of Benry emergency.

The Science Team hosts film nights when they're all living together. They can never agree on one singular film, so multiple are always watched each Friday. Viewings range from the entire Nightmare On Elm Street series to Goat Story 2. They have to replace the TV once after Dr. Coomer decks it too hard when he takes personal offense to a movie's ending.

The fridge of their shared home is constantly full of Darnold's latest creations. None of them are properly labelled, so it's kind of a "fuck around and find out" situation. Drink a bottle of green liquid, and it might be lime soda, three kinds of alcohol mixed with mint liqueur, or a potion that makes you transform into a large primordial lizard. Fun!

Tickle headcanons for the Science Team + G-man because. My guys.

Gordon:

Watch him never admit he's ticklish. Like he'd rather uhh...eat worms I dunno

His sweet spot is his neck. Like you just touch it and he hisses

He's not big on people touching him in general, but if he's comfortable with you he's fine with it

Oh he is a complete mess when you start, he laughs REALLY LOUD

He does not tickle back he'll just push you off

Benrey:

He is actually not ticklish. Like actually isn't

Doesn't mean he won't tickle you, especially if you find it annoying

He'll take your hand explicitly to run his finger around your palm

He may also go for your back, he won't stab it, he'll just run his fingers sllloooowwwllllyyy up your spine

AGGRESSIVE TICKLER

He won't hold you down but he does know exactly where to tickle you

He also sneaks up on you and goes for your sides

He does laugh really loud when tickled

He does not have a ticklish spot. He is ticklish all over. Or maybe he isn't he's just really responsive to touch. Who knows?

He's just very playful in general so yeah he likes tickling and tickles

Coomer

Gonna be honest I don't know if he really feels tickling much anymore simply because he's mostly robot but...yeah he's ticklish

All I'm saying is it'd not too good of an idea just because he may accidentally punch or kick you when flailing around

He ALWAYS tickles back this is a fight now and he's winning

He has a really infectious laugh so that helps because as soon as he starts laughing your start and you're powerless

Bubby

H3 isn't ticklish STOP ASKING (He is)

Ties a bit into a different headcanon but tickling h1m gets a bit dangerous because sometimes h3 just. Flares up. So it's better to not tickle h1m

H3 is just as competitive as Coomer is though! H3 will tickle you until you're breathless!

H3 is very bad at it h3 has no pressure control

G-man

Getting tickled makes it slightly uncomfortable as it doesn't like that kind of touching

He does give tickles though! He tend to be quite gentle

She is constantly asking you questions, like if you're more ticklish here or there, do you like this or that...

Of course they have you either levitating a bit or in their lap

HLVRAI observation of the day:

Tommy can read Sweet Voice, and the two closest people (beings?) to him also speak it, Benrey and Sunkist.

One can be lead to assume that Tommy can understand Benrey because Sunkist speaks it, or the opposite could be true where Sunkist has Sweet Voice because Tommy was inspired by Benrey.

Or, it was coincidence, or strange turn of events.

This is made even more interesting when considering that Dr Coomer also uses Sweet Voice several times on-screen.
