Anime Year in Review
Last year I made a silly post ranking the three shows I happened to watch. This year, I got way more into anime (and manga), so let's do it properly this time
Revue Starlight* - Easy top star spot. This anime was flawless. I watched it twice this year and will be watching it again. The story, the animation, the music were all impeccable. The music, oh my god; I listen to the soundtrack every day. Some of my other favorites on this list I'd only recommend based on your personal tastes, but this show should be watched by everyone. (The sequel and spin-offs, not so much. They all use the revues in a way that completely undermines the premise of the main series)
Heavenly Delusion - So fucking good. Second on this list, but I think it's the best show that came out this year. Deeply traumatic, but in such a satisfying way. The horror elements were so brutal and so well done, and I love that the man-eating monsters were the least gruesome part of the show. If it wasn't for the stinker of the ice monster episode, I think this could've been my favorite anime
Call of the Night* - Adored this show. Yes it's a celebration of the hedonism of vampires, but it's so earnest and down-to-earth with it that it feels so good to watch that I did it twice (sub and dub). I also got into the manga, which is sadly wrapping up next month, but hopefully that prompts an announcement about season 2
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End - Super chill show, which is a great way to wind down the week. It's such a cool concept too, following the adventurer after the adventure is over. It's just a reflection on life and I love it
The Witch from Mercury (cour 2) - Given that I run a sideblog just for this show, it might be surprising that it's so low on my list, but the second cour was a lot weaker than the first. Not nearly enough of Suletta and Miorine interacting, and way too much chaff following Guel's B-plot. I've said it before, but I think the worst part of this Gundam show is that it's a Gundam show. A+ epilogue though, and Suletta is still my favorite character this year
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off - I enjoyed the original comic and the live action movie. I didn't realize this new adaption was really a sequel, but it ended up being a great way to bring the old story to the modern decade. (Two decades later isn't much, but it was very of-its-time)
Spy x Family (cour 2) - Very fun show. Following several viewpoint characters means the individual episodes might be hit-or-miss (as much as I love Anya, the episodes at the school are relatively bland), but the overall package was sweet and enjoyable
Nimona - Another comic I really enjoyed. The movie was strong, although it cut a lot of parts out that I thought were important to the original story
The Orbital Children - Directed by the same person who directed one of my long-time favorites (Dennou Coil), the first two acts of this really felt like a modern update. Stunning visuals, great sci-fi, thrilling adventure. Went totally off the deep in the third act, though
Joshiraku* - As the characters pointed out, adapting a manga that takes entirely inside the green room of a stand-up comedy club is an odd choice. It was off-the-charts hilarious, though. Considering some of the scripts were entirely pun-based, it must've been an immense amount of work to translate, but they absolutely pulled it off
Oshi no Ko - The only reason I watched this show was because the OP was such a banger. (Several fantastic anime songs by YOASOBI this year, and Idol is easily my favorite.) The first, feature-length episode was incredible and I literally cried at the end. If it was a stand-alone movie, it would be a couple of spots higher on this list. The rest of the show was fine, but not really what I was here for. I'll probably still watch season 2 though
Arknights: Prelude to Dawn* - I bounced off the gacha game immediately, but the worldbuilding and character designs seemed cool, so I wanted to give the anime adaptation a chance. The plot was very thin but serviceable enough. At least it looked nice to watch.
The Magical Revolution of ... - Not typing that whole thing out. It was a cute show. The yuri stuff was nice, but I wish for a show about a magical inventor, there was a non-zero amount of magical inventing shown on screen
* indicates the show aired prior to 2023
A lot of shows I really loved this year. Looking forward to next year, the anime I'm most hyped for is obviously Dungeon Meshi. It looks like it's going to be incredible. The second season of Arcane is also scheduled to come out late next year, which is also very exciting. Technically Frieren has a second cour in January, but they're airing both cours as basically a single 24-episode season, so that doesn't really count
For older shows I mean to catch up on, YouTube has recced me clips of probably every single joke from K-On!, and it's really grown on me. Definitely going to watch that soon. I'm also in the mood to watch Bocchi the Rock! again. I should also make myself watch the first couple episodes of PMMM. Nothing I've seen on Tumblr has grabbed me for that one, but it's right in the middle of some of the other shows I was gushing about here and it would be dumb not to try it

anime tag game!
Thanks so much for the tag @aerinth ! Yours was a lot of fun to read. And I love to talk about anime so thank you for the opportunity! You can read her post here.
favorite anime: Oh!! A hard one. I really love Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, on every rewatch it just holds up in every aspect even if it doesn’t occupy my mind constantly like say, Naruto etc, but I also love Cowboy Bebop. Also, I know Fruits Basket (2019) will be one of my favourites when the final season comes out this year, so I want to mention that too.
least favorite anime: LOL they’re all anime that when I finally made friends who liked anime at university they made me watch them cuz they judged me for liking ‘mainstream’ stuff, but I watched this one called Aho Girl which was just... stupid??? So bad. And this other one called Dennou Coil, and Air Gear, both just sinfully boring and the latter tried to make up with it with a bunch of fanservice. Moral of the story is stick to my own tastes.
last anime you watched: MHA! I’m almost done with season 3. Where I’ve read up to in the manga is definitely past the anime, but I can’t remember much for some reason? So i thought i’d watch the anime to catch up and jog my memory.
favorite anime movie: Probably Grave of the Fireflies, but it’s just so depressing that I kinda don’t wanna pick it. I’ll say Only Yesterday, that’s such a gentle and profound and deeply relatable movie, especially for young women.
anime you cried hardest at: Uhhh, Grave of the Fireflies, lol, but also at Clannad After Story (make no mistake, I don’t actually like Clannad all that much but it still made me cry), Fruits Basket 2019 has made me cry plenty in its two seasons, so I think Fruits Basket wins this.
your comfort anime: honestly? Naruto. For all its flaws, there’s something so warm and nostalgic about it that just takes me back, it’s like wrapping up young me and my imagination with a blanket, that just lives in my brain rent free and yeah, it’s why it’s always the anime that means the most to me, despite me being fullly aware that objectively there are better anime/anime that does certain things better.
favorite anime character: no one gets any points for guessing this one. Kakashi.
shoujo or shonen: So, shounen is probably what has occupied my mind, heart and imagination mostly, but I’m a shoujo girl at heart. I love Fruits Basket, Ouran High School Host Club, Princess Jellyfish etc.
if you could shift into an anime universe, which one: Pokemon!! When I was a little kid me and my little brother used to pretend we were in the pokemon world anyway LOL there’s something so fun and rich about that world that captures my imagination too I don’t know why. But I kinda wanna go into Naruto too. I’m not really a fighter so I don’t really wanna be a kunoichi but I still want the capacity to do something, you know what I mean??? It’s just another world that really lets my imagination run wild.

2007: Denno Coil
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I consider Denno Coil one of the best kid shows of all time.
Denno Coil is about a future where augmented reality (AR) glasses layers another world onto our own. Virtual pets, exploitable glitches and killer antivirus programs overlay onto reality. The latest fad among children is to collect metabugs, virtual bits that can be manipulated into different programs and sold at a high price. After moving to the most digitally advanced city in the world Yuko Okonoki joins a club with other kids who wear AR glasses and together they have adventures and uncover mysteries.
The first half of Denno Coil sets the stage and the second half digs deep into character work with the whole working towards creating an amazing and moving cyberpunk world which uplifts and highlights the trials and tribulations of children.
And I don’t mean anime children substituting for adults so as to express adult problems and themes to an adult audience, no. Denno Coil is thankfully, mercifully, filled with kid characters who posse traits and emotional logic to that of real children and who face problems relatable to children. It’s fantastic. Especially the way in which the series respects it’s child characters and by extension the children who make up it’s audience by sharing a range of life experiences including those of pain, loss, and fear via the show’s expertly used  AR bent.
The children in Denno Coil accept and treat cyber threats, cyber pets, and mystery surrounding the technology as real - the kid network of rumor and urban legend carries weight like it always does in children’s social spheres. Remember the “Charlie Charlie Challenge” fad among kids a few years back? Its a simple game under the guise of summoning a spirit. Religious or not the excitement, fear, and hesitation of playing Charlie Charlie (or it’s original name Juego de la Lapicera) is due to the youthful treatment of reality; the legend, the rumor, the game is for all intents and purposes completely real. Saying Bloody Mary three times into a mirror. Stepping on a crack. You know the feeling.
In Dennou Coil there is an amazing scene where the kids are surrounded by “illegals” which are viruses depicted as scratchy shadowy figures. They consider taking off their glasses but in one of the most convincing story depictions of kid-logic and the power of normalized technology they know removing their glasses won’t actually make the figures to go away. They’ll just simply lose the ability to see their attackers - making the entire ordeal even more frightening. It’s real.
It’s that treatment of reality that gives the children a sense of power over the same technology that can scare them, it is why they have a command of and deeper understanding and more creative use of the AR technology than anyone else. Which, WOW! That’s just outright true!
Kids may not have anything to do with the creation of technology and primarily exist in a realm of reaction to what is available and happening yet their ownership of what technology is for and how it is used and what you can do with it is always far beyond most adults and certainly the manufacturers. Hand a toddler an ipad and prepare to be amazed.
Denno Coil is by no means a dark story looming in the backdrop of a happy children’s show. Many of the shows heavier themes permeate the series from the start and while yes as the mystery of the show builds so does the show’s more unnerving aspects - but kids need horror stories too!
Kids need safe spaces in which to experience fear and do some introspective work and consider what they’d do with the choices given. Stories are like the AR glasses of Denno Coil; they act as those realities children can lay on top of their own life and experiences in order to better understand the world around them and themselves.
One hopes that a story is the first place a child will experience pain, loss, and fear but in the cases where a story is secondary to a lived experience then hopefully the story can still reflect some truths as a form of solace. Children’s programming is often times missing what Denno Coil has made it’s prerogative: An admission that even as a child things can be scary, hurtful, and unfair but that most obstacles can be overcome by working through them with the trusted people and tools around you.

Shonen Jump + & Avex Entertainment Launch New Collaboration Project "PROJECT COMUC"
Shueisha's online manga magazine Shonen Jump + has launched "PROJECT COMUC," a collaboration project with Avex Entertainment. This project was born from the idea that Shonen Jump + with its "stories and pictures" and Avex with its "music" could combine their respective strengths to create a new format of entertainment contents by connecting manga (COMIC) and music (MUSIC).
In the first phase of the project, an artist from Shonen Jump + drew an illustration, and six young artists supported by Avex created a song to accompany the illustration. The six participating music artists are Ezoshika Gourmet Club, Crab Kani Club, Shukatsu Club, Chevon, zonji, and Haku. The participating manga artist is Ondoru Nukui, who debuted with Exorcism Overnight Fever, which won the Grand Prize at the 2021 Shonen Jump+ Next Generation Manga Awards.
    The illustration by Ondoru Nukui:
Six lyric videos have already been posted on the YouTube's Jump Channel. The winner, who gets the highest number of hits between January 14 and 30, will receive a cash prize of 1,000,000 yen (about 8,754 USD) and a commemorative illustration by Nukui. Which is your favorite song?
