Fanfic No. 43: Gods, get a room!

Type of fic: Canon divergent, .9k words and 2 chapters, complete, took almost 7 months to write, rated T

“Ok, this is one of those rare times I write a fanfiction that is not Twilight based. So, for those of us who like Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson: the Olympian series, this story takes place towards the end of The Titan's Curse. Oneshot.”

Characters: Annabeth Chase, Percy Jackson, and Thalia Grace

Length and format: This is a very short fic meant to describe one scene rather than an overarching plot.

Content: The plot relied mostly on the humor of the situation and the misunderstanding that Percy and Annabeth were, for lack of a better word, kissing and not fighting. So on the front of “miscommunication for the sake of humor” it was pretty solid. It was also coherent but could have used more detail and had minor spelling errors.

Characterization: There was very little characterization of Percy and Annabeth, they were mostly there to facilitate the plot. More detail definitely could’ve been helpful because there is no indication of when Kronos stops possessing Annabeth and she returns to herself. Thalia’s disgust felt in canon but again, there was very little of her there to even characterize.

Reception: There are 56 comments with mixed reviews, some praise the humor and others call it inappropriate and bad. There are also 32 favorites and 10 follows.

Author: Author tigerlillium is a twihard, this is their only fic that is not from twilight and as of right now it is their first but ANs lead me to believe earlier fics have been purged. On the account page author lists some of their favorites and a lot of copypasta. In ANs the author gives context to the fic and gives updates on their stories and an apology for not doing steady updates. Account went inactive in 2008 so we can only wish them the best.

Impact: This fic was ok, personally the humor wasn’t for me and that’s what mostly made up the fic. I did enjoy the writing style so hopefully the author is still writing somewhere.

Pictures from the MoMI Todd Haynes Retrospective

@silverfactory and I went to the Museum of the Moving Image for a (you guessed it) Velvet Goldmine screening, which was fantastic as always. The screening was part of a Todd Haynes retrospective series, but they also have a small exhibit dedicated to his image books, drawings, and production material from some of his films. Here are a few pictures I took while we were there!

The Velvet Goldmine section. At the top is one of the image books for the film. Todd Haynes puts together these books for all of his films with visual inspiration for the project. @silverfactory and I were SO disappointed we couldn't flip through the book, but it was super neat seeing it in person!

The initial concept for the film (what kind of a title is Star Star lol) and some art to go along with it. I didn't know how skilled Todd Haynes is in visual art like this - all the drawings throughout the exhibit are his!

angelmichelangelo fic advent 2023!

kicking this years fic advent a little earlier this year just because i’ve had a hectic few weeks months at work and at home so i’d like to get ahead of myself as much as i can! (plus my excitement for this each year just increases ten fold each time so i become more and more impatient to wait for november lol)

so for anyone that doesn’t know, each year for the past five years now, i’ve done my own fic advent! which is where for 25 days from december 1st i post 25 fics! and all i need from you, dear friends, is the prompts!

it’s pretty easy: just send me a one worded prompt! it doesn’t have to be christmas or winter related but give me a one worded prompt and i shall spin it in whatever way i can! :) just pop a prompt into my inbox (anon or not it’s up to you) send as many as you want and i’ll pick whatever ones jump out at me best! it’s a lot of fun and really helps exercise my writing muscles as well as give you guys some hopefully good fanfics of your liking during the festive season!

plus at the end of the 25 days, i’ll donate £25 to a chosen charity for christmas! everyone is a winner!

for this fic advent i will be writing tmnt fic, any versions (aside from the 1987 version just because i haven’t really watched much of that) so if your specific prompt comes with a version you have in mind, just put it down next to the word you have chosen to send me:) otherwise i’ll just pick a version at random!

Fanfic No. 40: Luke vs Camp Halfblood

Type of fic: Canon divergent, 4.8 words and 16 chapters, complete, took less than a month to write, rated T

“Sorry, I had to change the name, apparently someone else has a story called The Princess Andromeda. Annabeth is kidnapped by Luke and is taken to the Princess Andromeda, and Percy and Grover go in an attempt to save her.”

Characters: Annabeth Chase, Grover Underwood, Luke Castellan, and Percy Jackson

Length and format: This is definitely a fast read. Chapters are very short and can be combined since each scene is depicted over two or three chapters. The formatting was easy to read.

Content: If you’re looking for an overarching dramatic plot this isn’t for you. If you are interested in a quick fun read that is dialogue based then you will totally love this. The fic could use more detail, but it is still an enjoyable read. There is a pov switch unannounced in the first chapter and some minor grammar but other than that this is pretty solid considering it’s mostly dialogue and less technical stuff.

Characterization: The characters were very limited as they were there to facilitate the plot, there were some OOC moments that can be chalked up to the “XD randomness” humor of the time.

Reception: There are 35 reviews that are mostly positive, though there are a few negative reviews. There are also 13 favorites and 5 follows.

Author: Author Demigod444 uses the word ‘arse’ in the fic so I am led to believe they are located somewhere in the UK. On the account page they say they’ve had writer's block and are trying to get back into writing while making their stance on ships from The Hunger Games clear. I believe the account has been purged from what was ever on before this. In ANs the author says this is their first Percy Jackson fanfic and they ask for reviews. They also discuss plans to write a sequel, however that was never made. They also give special thanks to friends and constant reviewers that helped along the way. They sign off as “Zachi” which could be short for “Zachary” or a pen name. Regardless, the account went inactive in 2009 so we can only wish them the best.

Impact: This was another fic I would’ve loved reading as a kid. Right now the characters are a bit half baked for my liking but I still had fun reading.

In spring of 1945, disintegrating Nazi administrative functions presented MO/Rome with unrivalled chance to infiltrate MO printed material, through exploitation of tottering German Postal System.

OBJECTIVE

(1) To weaken further the will of Wehrmacht and civilians to continue losing fight. (2) Add more confusion to already chaotic communications and transport services. (3) Convince German people through dissemination of MO printed material of existence of Anti-Nazi group within Germany, especially strong in business and banking circles.

IMPLEMENTATION Counterfeit letters packed into faked German mailbags carried by 14th Fighter Squadron.

OPERATION From February 4, '45 to April 15, '45, the 14th Fighter Squadron of the 15th Airforce, on 20 sorties carried 320 "German mailbags" stuffed into 7inch smoke shell bombs - each bag carrying 300 letters, and filled with copies of Das Neue Deutschland, MO leaflets, etc. R.R. stations and marshalling yards the targets where mailbags were dropped on strafing missions. By special device, bags dropped free of bombs, thus removing tell-tale white source of drops.
