frankieromustdie: Rad Mail Day!:
Thank you so much @amyxmadden !!! Honored to be a part of your wonderful new book, Negatives. So many incredible memories of shows i played, shows i attended, and nights that changed my life forever… This book is also packed with beautiful pictures of talented friends taken by other talented friends. I do apologize for writing the bleakest Afterword of all time…. however, in my defense the book IS called Negatives so 🤷‍♀️.
This Photographic Archive of Emo, features a foreword from Chris Carrabba (@chris_carrabba @dashboardconfessional), and essays from Norman Brannon ( @normanbrannon ), Geoff Rickly ( @geoffrickly), Matt Pryor ( @mattpryorsongs ), Andrew MacMahon ( @amnthewilderness ), Bob Nanna ( @heybobnanna ), Jesse Johnson ( @jessemack), an afterword by myself and will be out on 10.24.2023 via the fine folks at Chronicle ( @chroniclebooks ) the preorder is live on Amazon now or in @amyxmadden ‘s profile and i highly suggest copping one as soon as you can.

Interview with Frank Iero of My Chemical Romance (2004)
By: Marc Conner
Tumblr media
Years before I opened CONTENDERS Boardshop, I had the pleasure of running the Music Program for etnies and was fortunate enough to work with My Chemical Romance for a couple of years. Everyone in My Chem are absolute sweethearts, and this interview was done on the floor of their van weeks before Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge was about to release in the summer of 2004.
That summer changed everyones life.
But the one thing that has not changed (since the bands inception) is who the music is for, and the message they want to convey. They always had a vision, a goal, and made a ton of sacrifices to accomplish them. Never give up on your dream.
Frank, is there anything in particular that you would like to discuss or talk about in this interview?
Oh, my god, yes! I was hanging out after playing a show in Texas, when this kid approached me and said, “I have a question, but I feel weird about asking it.” I told him to just ask me anyway. The kid replied, “How do you feel about fans not liking you because some of your band members are gay?”
I was stunned, but told him that if you are racist, sexist or homophobic, then My Chemical Romance is not for you! It’s funny, we were going to put a disclaimer on our CD stating that, but it's already at press. So, if you are racist, sexist or homophobic, please do not buy our album, wear our t-shirts or support our band!
Aren’t you worried about losing fans?
No. This band is all about acceptance, and we won’t tolerate those ideals.
Let's switch things up a bit and talk about the scene that you guys grew up around.
I remember growing up and going to shows, and it was so much different that it is today. Kids used to go to shows for the love of music, music that meant something. You went to punk rock shows because you didn’t fit in anywhere else. It was a community of social misfits. Your family didn’t understand you and the kids at school called you a freak and tried to beat you up. But when you were at a show, you belonged. I remember when kids fell in the pit, someone would pick them up; when a fight broke out, the band stopped playing; and when kids sang along and pointed their fingers, it truly meant something.
I hope I don’t sound like a dreamer by saying this, but I really wish it could be like that again. All too often these days, people go to shows to demonstrate how tough they are and to prove their “hardcore” dominance.  Now, don’t get me wrong, I didn’t grow up in some jerk-free paradise, we had our problems with testosterone-driven idiots back then, too. However, now it seems to have run rampant. It’s getting harder and harder to remember playing a show where at least one kid doesn’t get carried out of the venue. It makes me ill.
We as a community are going to have to realize that if we don’t care for and nurture our scene in a positive way, there won’t be anything left of it. It’s important to start bands, put on and support shows and write ’zines. This includes not fucking up venues and getting shows shut down. Everyone has to do his or her share, and one person can make a difference.
I know what you mean. Before, if someone went down at a show, you would kind of stop and make sure that person was okay and got up.  Now it’s all about Friday night fights--kind of sad.
Basically, I just like to play shows where a kid doesn’t have to be carried out because his face got beat in.
Damned Circle Jerks! Speaking of the Circle Jerks, what’s the story about a guest appearance on your new album?
Yeah, jeez. How do I say this with out gushing like a fan boy? Hmmm, I guess I can't. Anyway, when we played last year's CMJ fest, I got to meet one of my childhood heroes, Keith Morris. First off, Black Flag is my all time favorite band, and the Circle Jerks are also a personal favorite. Keith came up to me and told me he liked my band, and I damn near shit myself.
Anyway, I ran into him again at a gas station in L.A. while we were recording the new record, and I cornered him in the door way and asked if he remembered me at all. After looking a little freaked out, he said he did and I pressured him into giving me his contact info so that he could drop by the studio and do some vocal work.
After a week or two, I gave him a call and told him we'd love to have him come in and do guest vocals. Keith accepted and what transpired after that is one of my fondest memories of playing music. I got to watch him record, and afterward we ate loads of Chinese food and talked for a few hours. We still keep in touch and he'll drop me a line every now and then to give me some inspiration while we're on tour. Keith Morris is one of my favorite people, and it was nothing short of an honor to work with him.
Thanks for taking the time to do this interview, but before we go I have one last question.  How do you think the gay rumor got started?
I think it stemmed from me kissing Gerard.
Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge is out now. For more info, head on over to www.mychemicalromance.com

If you have a tattoo you’ve fallen out of love with let me know, let’s do something on top you will love! Then come back to me in 10 years and we can do another blastover over the blastover you now don’t love anymore.
That’s the Jack Watts lifetime guarantee👍🏻
