In less than 24 hours, the first big motorsports event of the year starts, the Rally Dakar 2024. And with it, the new season of the FIA W2RC.

This year, it might get interesting with a few new things, compared to last year. First, there is the 48 hour stage, that is basically a extremely long stage with four night camps on the route, and the drivers have to stop at the next camp, after a specific time, to rest for the night. In the morning they'll have to continue the race from there and the time will continue to run. There won't be any service from their crew at night. It's basically the evolution of the marathon stage.

Nasser Al-Attiyah will be driving one of the Prodrive Hunter this year and is now a teammate of Sebastien Loeb. Which means one of the best rally pilots ever and one of the best rally raid pilots ever are now driving for the same team. It will be interesting to see who'll be the better one, but my prediction is Nasser Al-Attiyah.

Nasser's seat in the Toyota Hilux now goes to Seth Quintero from the USA. He was one of the top drivers, in the last two years, in the T3 category for lightweight prototypes. I think he is a good addition to the team and will make a good job. If he will be racing for the win in his first T1+ year is hard to answer, but I'd give him a year, instead of thinking he can win this year.

Will Audi finally be able to demonstrate that a electric car can win the Dakar? The car is definitely fast enough, and also the drivers are, especially with Stephane Peterhansel and Carlos Sainz. But what about the reliability? That was the big weakness in the last two years, maybe they will finally have a Dakar without too many problems. If yes, they will probably win.

Joan Barreda Bort is now driving for Hero. Will he finally win his first Dakar, or will he once again, lose it because of one of his many mistakes and crashes? He is fast enough for the win, he just needs to reduce his mistakes and maybe take a bit less risk.

Or will the win go back to KTM, after Honda won last year? The bike category will be as interesting as never before, at least if you take the last 20 years.

The truck category will get very unpredictable again. The second year without Kamaz and the third year without MAZ means that the Iveco of the DeRooy team and the czech MM Technology Iveco, driven by Martin Maczik, will be the big favorites. But Ales Loprais is always good for a surprise with his Praga.

La categoría Camiones será interesante tal vez por motivos distintos a los esperados. La guerra en Ucrania ha dejado excluída fuera de competencia a KAMAZ y MAZ, por lo que los grandes favoritos de los últimos años no estarán presentes en Arabia Saudita. Esto abre las puertas a otras escuderías y marcas, y tal vez la más laureada de ellas es IVECO. Además de algunas entradas privadas, el equipo oficial Team de Rooy irá con dos estructuras al Dakar 2023 y un total de cuatro camiones IVECO Powerstar de 1.000 HP.

El equipo de Rooy tiene nuevos auspiciadores y la primera estructura será llamada Eurol Team de Rooy IVECO, contando con el joven Mitchel van der Brink a bordo de la unidad 511, el récordman de la categoría al debutar con 16 años en 2019. Mitchel fue P10 en 2022. Además, por este equipo irá Martin van der Brink con la unidad 506, viniendo de un sexto puesto en 2022.

En tanto, la escudería Boss Machinery Team de Rooy IVECO estará formada por Janus van Kasteren Jr. a bordo de la unidad 502 intentando mejorar la quinta posición de 2022 y  Vick Versteijnen en la unidad 504 cuyo mejor resultado es la P24 de 2016 y registró un abandono en su última participación en 2021.

Otros candidatos que deberá vencer IVECO en este Dakar son el campeón del mundo de la categoría T5, Kees Koolen, Martin Macik, Pascal de Baar, Tomas Vratny y Ales Loprais.

Binary logic is an important tool of Western thought. It is able to accommodate a wide range of power relationships, in which one side of the binary is dominant and the other is subject to repression. For example:

colonizer : colonzied man : woman good : evil

And so on. Much of postcolonial and feminist theory is devoted revealing the complexity of these simple power relationships, specifically how the terms are depend on one another to produce meaning. For colonizers to exist, there must be the colonized. However, colonial rule is undermined by the presence of the colonized. Edward Said writes in Culture and Imperialism that "nations are narrations," meaning that nation-states emerge from shared history and collective identity, and rely on the power belief to perpetuate their existence. Therefore, alternative histories and counter-narrative can threaten state power. Colonization, which we will just call "a practice of domination," is maintained by erasing and repressing the stories that threaten it, which means erasing evidence of its own existence.

However, the absence of something is only a shadow of its existence. Many postcolonial scholars use the concept of ghosts and haunting to describe the discrepancy between the wealth and power of colonizers, and the dislocation and disappearance of the colonized. Angie Merill writes that

"Hauntings require us to acknowledge how cities and academies are built upon disappearance [...] The ghost exists here with us because of violence, and haunting is the result."

How is haunting felt when we visit the Stedelijk museum, where Felix de Rooy takes center stage? What are we meant to think or feel? As Mendy pointed out, merely presenting two halves of the binary sign is nothing worth celebrating. Indigenous existence and co-presence is actually the starting point for conversations about the relationship between colonizer/colonized. Co-presence disrupts the binary status quo with tension, irony, and the sense of haunting. For an example local to the Northwest, Michelle M. Jacob's Yakima Rising describes how in 1989, children from the Yakima nation were invited to dance in celebration of Washington's 100 years of statehood. The interaction between the state that sought to destroy the Yakima nation, and the children who embody its future--what does it signify to the the audience? Irony, but also: celebration, disruption, survival & vitality. Haunting, and tension between what is there, and what could have been; all the futures that did not eventuate.

But what about the futures yet in store? Interpreting and re-interpreting these interactions help us create new, complex meanings that do not rely on old colonial logic. Bringing together the living and the dead, the dislocated, and the disappeared is an example of what Merill calls "co-presence through desire": that hauntings are not only about the interplay between absence and presence, but also answering the desire of the ghost. To reveal what must be revived and transformed.

Corona Guest Farm greets guests with an awesome vista. Vast desert plains and unusually beautiful, barren, stone-clad veldt; mountains shimmering in the noon-day sun, their diverse colours glinting. Then there’s the Rantberg range, the extraordinarily light Witberg range and of course, the colossal table-top Gamsberg itself, showing off its mighty 2,347 metres to impressive effect. A mesmerising scene, surely as brilliant and harsh as the Namib at its best.

We have been able to trace the history of Corona as far back as the turn of last century. Two old wells, found in a riverbed, as well as old ox-wagon trails passing Rooi Huis, support the theory that one of the transport routes leading from the coast of the Namibian Hinterland went past Corona and Picadilly before “winding” up the Gamsberg Pass. The garden creates a safe haven for many various bird species, making it a “bird spotter” paradise. With all the breath-taking landscapes surrounding us, Corona is a photographer’s dream destination!

Die Corona Guest Farm begrüßt die Gäste mit einer fantastischen Aussicht. Weite Wüstenebenen und ungewöhnlich schöne, karge, mit Steinen bedeckte Steppe; Berge, die in der Mittagssonne schimmern und deren verschiedene Farben glitzern. Dann gibt es die Rantberg Stufe, die außergewöhnlich leichte Witberg Stufe und natürlich der kolossale Tafelberg Gamsberg selbst, der seine mächtigen 2.347 Meter eindrucksvoll zur Geltung bringt. Eine faszinierende Szene, sicherlich so brillant und hart wie die Namib von ihrer besten Seite.

Man kann die Geschichte der Gästefarm bis zur Jahrhundertwende zurückverfolgen. Zwei alte Brunnen in einem Flussbett sowie alte Ochsenkarrenwege, die an Rooi Huis vorbeiführen, stützen die Theorie, dass einer der Transportwege, die von der Küste des namibischen Hinterlandes führten, an Corona und Picadilly vorbeiführte, bevor er den Gamsberg erklomm. Der Garten ist ein sicherer Hafen für viele verschiedene Vogelarten und somit ein Paradies für Vogelbeobachter. Mit all den atemberaubenden Landschaften, die uns umgeben, ist Corona das Traumziel eines Fotografen!
