X-Files IWTB: First Time React (Part II)

Okay everyone, back for Part II! Hopefully I’ll make quicker progress because all the BIG problems were parsed over in the Part I, right? …They were parsed over in Part I, right?

To catch up: IWTB is broken 10 minutes into the movie-- the FBI’s helicopter flying TO Mulder’s house destroyed that hiding place; and if he were to back out of the case at Scully’s say-so, he’d likely have been captured within days or weeks and been forced to broker a deal to help, anyway-- and further broken not even 20 minutes in-- destroying new characters in seconds, out-of-place dialogue, and skewering both Mulder and Scully by placing their in-character reactions in wrong scenes and scenarios.

Reaction below the cut~

Not even two seconds into my watch we have Mulder avoiding the “Your sister’s dead, isn’t she?”-- which is fine-- only for Whitney to be featured prominently, sympathetically watching him gaze at the missing agent’s picture. I'm. Annoyed.

The writers are setting up Agent Drummond? to be a Samantha replacement, that Mulder is so driven on this case because he wants to save a lost girl, etc., etc. But… that was put behind him in Closure; and it tears away the nuances and layers of Mulder’s character leaving only a simple “I help people ‘cuz my sis disappeared once” to motivate him. Mulder has gone above and beyond the call of duty to help people from monsters and men countless times; and the only cases that made him lose his objectivity were when the victims' stories exactly mirrored Samantha's circumstances, i.e. a little girl was abducted (Conduit, Oubliette, Paper Hearts, etc.) Furthermore, Mulder only ever lost himself "in the darkness" ONCE on a case, and that wasn't even about a little girl: Grotesque. Losing himself in the darkness is not Mulder's norm or even, really, in his wheelhouse (which was the entire point of the Bill Patterson storyline.) To make this a problem NOW in order to create a nonsensical wedge between he and Scully is... not laughable, but snortable.

The obvious cracks in the writing shine through again. Mulder only rode in the car without Scully so Father Joe could be there to open old wounds, the male agent could be there to poke them, and Whitney could be there to observe his silent, bleeding heart and fall more in crush with him. In order for this scene to happen, we have to think that: A. Scully would rather ride with random FBI people than with her partner (despite her natural suspicion of them-- though that’s missing in the movie and breaks her character, discussed in previous part) and B. Mulder, despite stipulating that she join him on the case, was just fine and dandy riding beside and playing nice with a pedophile rather than sticking by Scully’s side even though they’re going to the same place, not splitting up to look for clues.

Whitney hasn’t been given focal characterization yet, which is fine for now since she’s displayed character trait specific responses (her reactions to Mulder, to male agent, to Scully in the FBI building and at Father Joe’s and here.) It’s obvious she’s being set up as a person more-than-interested in Mulder; but that would require an explanation as to WHY. If that’s not given… then what’s the point of her crush in the narrative? It, like Father Joe’s pedophilia, would serve no purpose other than a footnote or perhaps an implication (i.e. her expressions remain intact but are not given their own camera focus as if it’s plot relevant, etc.)

It’s… not good.

The music’s still really good; and the shots are gorgeous. And that’s it. Oh, wait, the acting is good, too.

The FBI taking Father Joe to a false house is a good idea… except there’s no warning tape wrapped around one house but IS decorated all over its neighbor’s house. How is that important? Father Joe would have been facing the neighbor house covered in yellow warning tape when the vehicle drove past it and up the drive. The characters-- trained FBI agents-- don't notice or comment on this.

You see, kids? This is why locations and camera angles and shots are so important-- they cut you off at the knees if the movie isn’t shot in a logical way.

WAIT. CHARACTER BREAKING MOMENT.

Whitney brought Mulder on the case because of the paranormal aspect, Whitney sent a helicopter out to fetch him, Whitney has been crushing on him this entire time (silently), Whitney is being set up as a powerful woman who can tell people what to do and when-- Mulder’s exact type ala Phoebe Green, Detective White, Diana Fowley, etc.-- and… now she’s denying the paranormal angle???? AGAIN WITH THE MILLISECOND CHANGES: awed that Father Joe sensed their fake out house was a trick, then denied his intuitions with a bogus excuse the next second….

Wait. Chris (and the writers.) Did you set her up to be a powerful, skeptical woman who’s into Mulder (ala Scully) ON PURPOSE. CHRIS (and the writers.) We need to talk.

This movie’s going to kill me: I’m only 23:07 into the watch time.

Wait. WHERE’S SCULLY?? IS SHE JUST SITTING BACK THERE IN THE OTHER TRUCK?? WHERE’S SCULLY??

ALSO, WHY ARE WHITNEY AND MULDER BACK-AND-FORTHING “IS HE OR ISN’T HE”S ABOUT FATHER JOE WHILE FATHER JOE IS IN HEARING DISTANCE.

I’m now 23:34 into the movie and it’s going to kill me. Very pretty, lethal poison.

Also, Father Joe still wants to work with the Church? FAT. CHANCE.

YAY, GERALD SCHNAUZ MENTIONED.

Also, finally getting some backstory on Whitney (even if she’s not 'fessing up to having more than a professional interest in Mulder, ala Diana Fowley’s close-to-the-chest-but-overt-with-her-intentions style.)

“Yeah, well, I’m only half the team.” YEAH, AND WHERE IS THE OTHER HALF OF THE TEAM, MULDER? WRITERS??

I don’t have complaints about Mulder not batting back Whitney’s “But it’s your insights I need” because flattery gets him everywhere, always, and he’s not leaning into it, BUT, again, where’s Scully. This would be a great time to establish that Scully isn’t the type to sulk in the truck by showing off her chops as a professional while she and he banter back and forth about this information. Mulder could be telling it to her, filling her in on the relevant details she missed during the interrogation and truck ride. Meanwhile, we can establish Whitney as an individual by showing how she deals with Father Joe rather than letting her male agent nanny the old pedo around.

WHITNEY’S YELLING AT FATHER JOE FOR NO REASON WHILE HE’S IN THE MIDST OF A VISION-- THAT'S SO STUPID.

He’s already giving her the information; and her heightened aggression will probably stress him out and lose whatever he’s telling her. I know they were meaning to establish her as a ruthless skeptic who thinks Father-- you know what, I’m calling him Joe from now on-- who thinks that Joe’s faking it and is pressing, pressing, pressing for him to crack because he’s “vulnerable” right now… but this is just stupid, and likely against a ton of FBI regulations.

I'm torn about Mulder not telling her to stop because he's put immense pressure on psychics or other suffering victims in the past if they had time-sensitive information (ala Space)... so, I think? it could be in-character. ...EXCEPT he's soft on Joey, Whitney is not, and that dynamic would make him advocate for the pedo more (wow, what a sentence.)

Wait, now male agent disbelieves??? WHAT. BUT YOU ESTABLISHED BACK IN THE FBI… uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhgggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh.

WAIT, SO SCULLY WASN’T OUT IN THE CAR??? SHE JUST DITCHED ANYWAY???? SHE’S BACK IN THE HOSPITAL??

Wait, wait, so:

Last night, she and Mulder are flown into the FBI.

She decides to ditch the case because she doesn’t believe in Joe.

That’s stupid because it puts Mulder’s safety on the line and breaks her half of the deal-- that she come with him.

As she’s leaving, Mulder convinces her not to go. She sighs and heads for the trucks.

It’s daylight and there’s two FBI trucks. Mulder is with the two agents and Joe in one truck, and we’re not shown who’s in the other (likely Scully and some escorts.)

Scully doesn’t follow Mulder onto the crime scene.

BUT SHE’S NOT IN THE TRUCK ANYWAY BECAUSE SHE’S BACK AT THE HOSPITAL EVEN THOUGH THE ENTIRE ESTABLISHING SCENE PRIOR WAS ADDRESSING THE FACT SHE WAS LEAVING THE CASE.

BUT SHE STILL LEFT THE CASE. Yes, she has a patient to worry over; yes, that is important to her; but NO, she did not discuss this with Mulder when he stipulated he needed her WITH him on the case.

Mulder asked her to stay, she implicitly agreed, took his documents, seemed to be going with him… but nope, went home, went to sleep, went to work without discussing things further. What.

I feel like there were rewrites and it was just… never addressed on screen.

So, Scully agreed to help the case, took Mulder’s papers, walked to one of the trucks and… teleported back to her clinic? Went home? Never went to begin with? …Why did she need the file if she’s just going to take it home?? She’s not FBI anymore, the FBI wouldn’t let her do that. She can’t take the papers home as a civilian especially because-- okay, here’s another list:

Scully is a civilian who was not asked on the case. She’s only there because Mulder stipulated he wanted her to work on it with him.

She ditched THAT part of the bargain, but regardless--

Scully went home (WHY) and took FBI documents with her because…?

The FBI would never let that happen: they didn’t seek her out, she’s a civilian, they have other medical experts to consult with about their cases.

I do like Scully’s interactions with Christian, probably because it smacks of her old self (disguising the world-weary attitude of an adult for a child’s sake…) and was more in-character with her regular pre-S9 character, which is… weird for me. I’ll take it, I guess.

I’m only 25:33 minutes in.

ANOTHER TERRIBLE FATHER??? WHY???????????

“We are here to heal the sick, not prolong the dying” ummmmmmmmmmmm what. This is a Catholic hospital, is it not? Isn’t that strictly against Catholic dogma? …What is this mafia low beat and why is everyone in this hospital bent on the kid dying and being taken off their hands?

I know, I know: Chris is a Catholic of sorts with his own criticisms and stories to tell, etc…. And here it comes, BUT two overheads trying to pry this dying child off of Scully’s hands because he’s “incurable” doesn’t make sense here. It wouldn’t be to their benefit, would probably cause quite a scandal, and, overall, would probably result in a report and a lawsuit. Perhaps this is a big issue in private hospitals; and humans are humans and full of corruption, etc. etc. BUT I assume the boy’s parents are paying the bills on time sooooo… it would be against the hospital's? clinic's? best interest to want to kick Christian from the facility. Again, it’s stupid and makes no sense.

26:27.

Scully crying in her office was the best scene of this movie, hands down. It’s perfect for this moment, perfect for her character…

BUT. It comes after she walked out on a case of a missing-possibly-dead FBI agent, so it makes her look like a woman who only hands out sympathy or empathy to those people SHE deems worthy of it. Yes, a child dying is tragic; yes, he reminds her of William; yes, she lived through this with Emily… all of that is tragic and heartrending (and her Emily arc could have been mentioned in the movie to give her dynamic with Christian more weight), BUT it ends up hurting her character in the long run. Why? Because she sacrifices Mulder’s chance for freedom AND separates from him because she wants to save this child while ALSO accusing him of doing the exact same thing.

So, while it’s one of the best scenes in context, it’s also one of the worst overall.

People are swimming now. Ohhhhh, noooooo, run off the road, dead.

30:35.

Here’s the thinking scene between Mulder and Scully.

The delivery from DD and GA is top-notch-- did not imagine Mulder’s “thank you” to be as upbeat and humorous, expected it to be more drawn out and monotone. I like it better this way. And Gillian is doing a fantastic job with the scripts she’s given: thus far, she’s selling this version of Scully (MINUS THE ENORMOUS MISCHARACTERIZATIONS)... but her performance (and DD’s) is constantly undersold by the script. It’s sad, man… well, it’s not sad because I’m not invested in canon post S8; but it’s something.

“Rare brain disease” great acting on both their parts, excellent and in-character, nice.

Also: child, boy, sick child, brain disease-- I see what you did there, Chris Carter and writers, and it would have been very cool except. To be fair, I don’t mind the Christian side-plot: it gives Scully a chance to be in her element, and the boy actor is nice. Again, BUT, it also has hokily evil villains and destroys other likable aspects of Scully’s personality, soooooooooooooo yeah.

“Why haven’t you told me about this before?” / “I thought there was something I could do.”

BINGO, I’LL GIVE IWTB THIS ONE THING, THIS MOVIE WAS WORTH THE WATCH FOR THAT LINE. Here’s why: because that’s always been Scully’s M.O.: she hides her problems under the surface hoping to solve them herself, not wanting to be a bother (ex. Irresistible, Memento Mori, Elegy, Gethsemane, A Christmas Carol, etc. etc.) At least I have it said in black-and-white to reference.

ALSO, this is why Mulder’s brain disease makes no sense: Mulder is a secret keeper but only about his past, not his present or future. Example: he never mentions former partners but will yell to the sky about current crises or injustices against himself and others. If Mulder had a bad scan, he’d draw Scully into it IMMEDIATELY because he believes their unconventional ways would be able to cure anything-- ala Demons and Biogenesis; and would make a mission out of it to try to take down what’s left of the Syndicate. If he’s given a death sentence, it would then become a struggle or fight between his desire to keep crusading and her insistence that it's only killing him faster (again, ala Demons.)

Mulder’s quip about God not losing any sleep is so Mulder, that’s great.

Scully’s “Why bring a kid into the world just to make him suffer?” is another symptom of her leanings away from strict Catholicism; BUT, more importantly, it’s not God making him suffer in this case, it’s her private medical system who won’t even TRY because of the bottom line? I guess? Though that’d make them more money?? Seems rather weird that Scully wants to cure this boy and she’s not really that Catholic whereas the Catholic facility just wants him dead for no explicable reason other than he’s going to die, YOLO.

Also… we’re just going to skip right over Emily and the fact you two already had this conversation before, aren’t we? Yep.

“I don’t know, Mulder, I’ve got such a connection to this boy.”

ANOTHER great piece of dialogue, because this plugs into Scully’s biases in past cases and Mulder’s twitchiness when he senses said biases. BUT IN THIS CASE IT’S GOOD: it highlights how far they’ve come, that Scully discloses this detail and their further conversation to Mulder without batting an eye and he has the learned patience and understanding in order to gently peel back her layers and get to the root of the issue.

“I think our son left us both with an emptiness that can’t be filled” and that’s GOOD, that’s a GOOD piece of writing, GOOD FOR YOU.

HOWEVER, like everything else in this movie it gets lost in the ridiculous drama coming up; but further, it’s undercut because of the stupid choices that they made in the past that led them to this moment. So… sympathy low.

Acting’s excellent as always, though.

And look at that crazy comforter-- that’s a Scully thing if I’ve ever seen one.

Despite the staggering flaws of the script, I like how the writers wrote Mulder and Scully's domestic dynamic, specifically that Mulder let Scully completely decorate the house (everything's in her style) and even snuggled up with her under a blue, swirly comforter (that she very obviously picked out) without a fuss. And maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I believe that came straight from Chris Carter's brain; and I also believe it's something he likes about Scully, that she puts Mulder (i.e. her thoughts in the Pilot script while batting back and forth with Mulder) or Mulder's stuff in his place (his office pre-and post Ghost in the Machine, her hints about his shoelaces in Bad Blood, and the house now.) There's a give and take, of course; but Mulder's chaos is delegated to specific areas of the basement (and their house); and the compromise between the two people in their partnership and relationship comes together perfectly here... in moments.

I’m stopping after Scully’s pouty “Scratchy beard” and Mulder’s playful response and Scully’s GIGGLE since it’s nice and I don’t have to think about the plot--

“Oh! There’s something weird on the toxicology--”

LALALALALALLLALALALAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Also…

Sigh……………………….. one last rant:

ALSO, you’re telling me that the dastardly Catholic overlords at the private clinic WANT TO TOSS A DYING CHILD OUT BUT THEY’LL JUST LET SCULLY DO A WILL NILLY RANDOM TOX SCREEN THAT HASN’T BEEN AUTHORIZED BY THE FBI TO DO IN THE FIRST PLACE OR IF SO ONLY OFF-SCREEN??????????????

Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy???

Astrology & Voice : A Quick Study

1. Prominent 3h placements can give you a very distinct voice

2. People who have a deeper/huskier voice often have Mercury aspecting Pluto. Ex: Miley Cyrus & Whitney Houston (both have mercury conjunct pluto)

3. Mercury in a water sign can give the native a very sultry voice. They probably sound a lil intimidating and their voices will always be slightly low pitched (Zoe Saldana, Lana Del Rey, Pamela Anderson, Adriana Lima, Gisele Bundchen)

if Mercury is in Cancer, the voice tends to be soft and calming to hear. Ex: Margot Robbie, Elsa Pataky, Kate Beckinsale etc

Mercury in Scorpio gives the native a certain, almost nasally twang to their voice, it's not exactly nasally but i cant think of a good way to describe it, its deeper and fuller sounding but there's a certain twang to it.

IWTB musings

I’ve always thought the alternate title for this movie should be “How Scully got her groove back…”

Although Mulder spends most of his time in isolation and it appears as if Scully is the more functional (working as a successful doctor), when it comes to going back to work for the FBI we see how broken she really was. Scully has closed herself off the extreme possibilities and pushes back hard against it- even calling it ‘looking into the darkness’. Given that she works as a medical doctor I have no doubt she’s seen her share of horrific situations, but unlike The X Files, she doesn’t have her Partner to sustain and support her. How much Scully misses that dynamic can’t be understated, and while the case might give her the idea to look into alternate treatments, it’s seeing Mulder’s relentlessness that spurs her to go against her colleagues and boss to push for this experimental treatment.

Scully’s jealousy of Dakota Whitney isn’t touched on enough but it is more than a pretty young Agent who looks up to Mulder, it’s that this woman has a willingness to believe without the fear of being hurt. I absolutely love that Mulder shaved his beard within minutes of Scully complaining in bed and pulls away when Dakota goes to touch his shaving injury in front of Scully. Scully being “too busy” to answer Mulder’s calls the next day were definitely due to a jealous pout. While I maintain Dakota’s death was bizarre and unnecessary, it serves as a painful reminder of all the allies, friends and family who lost their life during his pursuit for answers.

I personally love the Mulder and Scully argument they have in the hospital shower (plus Mulder’s familiarity with the hospital is enough to fuel hundreds of pre-IWTB fics). Mulder’s dream is to work with Scully again and he can’t understand why she isn’t into it. He doesn’t fight for her to stay, being with Mulder has always been her choice so he doesn’t attempt to make her stay. Fanfic note, Scully has another place to stay other the Unremarkable House. I’m guessing it’s a furnished apartment near the hospital that she used as a decoy for her primary residence while Mulder was still a fugitive. Also, her condo in the Revival looks exactly like an executive furnished apartment with zero personal touches, leading to my argument that Scully wasn’t out of the house that long. But I digress.

The final scene where Scully goes to the house with a thin excuse to discuss the case is really beautiful. Scully is terrified to perform this surgery and take another leap of faith and so she goes to Mulder (who is caught up by the injustice in the world). It takes Mulder a moment to realize what Scully needs, and the words “don’t give up” finally make him realize the weight of which she’d been struggling. After everything with William and the things she has seen, Scully had given up believing in herself, and that is what pushes Mulder to go after her. It is beautiful to see how Mulder is able to restore Scully’s faith in herself by virtue of his unwavering support. Also, Scully’s face lighting up at the mention of a vacation is such a married moment that always makes me laugh. While we never find out whether the surgery was a success or not, but I love seeing Scully’s confidence at the end as she begins to work.

I can understand why people have issues with the movie because it isn’t the Mulder and Scully dynamic that we love in the series. However, I think seeing a broken Scully struggling with herself and ultimately having Mulder as her touchstone to help her heal the long neglected wound shows us more than we got in the series.

USAF's new B-21 “Raider” flying wing bomber made its first flight on Friday, the next step in the launch of a new fleet of nuclear-capable long-range stealth bombers built by Northrop Grumman.

The B-21 left the Northrop facility at U.S. Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, California, at sunrise on Friday at 6:51 a.m., offering the first improvised view of the new bomber that was developed under strict security.

The aircraft went to Edwards Air Base, California, where it will continue with the flight test phase with USAF. The flight lasted about 90 minutes.

With the Cerberus callsign, the aircraft took off eastward with an F-16 companion plane after climbing about 500 feet. The landing gear was not collected, according to videos and photos that appeared on social networks.

U.S. Air Force leaders did not disclose the first flight of the B-21, but about three dozen aviation enthusiasts and amateur photographers gathered around Plant 42 on Friday in the hope of seeing the bomber rise to the skies.

The B-21, which carries the same "flying wing" format as its predecessor, the B-2, will be able to launch conventional and nuclear weapons around the world, using long-range and in-flight refueling capabilities.

The aircraft are projected to cost approximately $550 million each in 2010 dollars, or about $750 million in current inflation-adjusted dollars. However, the USAF kept other price information confidential, “which makes it difficult to validate the proposed cost,” the Congressional Research Service said in a 2021 report.

The U.S. Air Force plans to buy at least 100 planes and start replacing the B-1 and B-2 bombers. The B-1 costs about US$ 60,000 per hour to operate and the B-2 costs about US$ 65,000 per hour, according to Pentagon data.

Ann Stefanek, USAF spokesperson, said: “The B-21 Raider is in flight tests. Flight tests are a critical step in the testing campaign managed by the Air Force Test Center and the 412ª Combined Test Wings B-21 Test Force."

Six test aircraft are being produced now. They are being built on the same line, using the tools, processes and technicians that will build the production aircraft.

Northrop defeated a team composed of Boeing and Lockheed Martin when it won the 2015 contract to manufacture the bomber. Engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney, Collins Aerospace, GKN Aerospace, BAE Systems and Spirit Aerosystems are among more than 400 suppliers in 40 states.

The B-21 was publicly presented in December 2022, but the expectation around its first flight had been growing for years.

In 2019, an important Air Force general suggested that the bomber could fly as early as December 2021, but the Force subsequently postponed this date to mid-2022. In early 2022, the USAF postponed even more until 2023.

The B-21 program is in the engineering and manufacturing development phase and the first aircraft will be delivered to Ellsworth Air Force Base in North Dakota.

Northrop is calling the plane a sixth-generation aircraft due to its ability to connect to other aircraft and easily integrate future weapons into its systems architecture.

The B-21 also features surface material with low observation, more durable and stealthy, which should require less maintenance and reduce operating costs and downtime.

"Mulder, you really should be more careful," Assistant Special Agent in Charge, Dakota Whitney said. Her fingers reached out uninvited, brushing against the reddened skin of his cheek.

Scully's heart skipped a beat as she watched Whitney's hand make contact with Mulder’s jaw, her stomach churning with a mixture of unease and something she couldn't quite pinpoint. She felt a surge of protectiveness, an instinctual need to assert her place.

Scully's smile wavered as she watched the interaction, her maternal instincts kicking in. She felt a pang of jealousy she hadn't anticipated, a familiar feeling from years ago, the protective instincts intensified by her pregnancy.

"Agent Whitney," Scully interjected, her tone firm, laced with irritation. "I think Mulder's got it covered. We appreciate your concern, but this is hardly the first time he's nicked himself while shaving."

Whitney's hand recoiled slightly, and Scully caught the flash of surprise in her eyes. Mulder cleared his throat, his gaze shifting between the two women, his discomfort evident.

Whitney quickly recovered, offering a somewhat strained smile. "Of course, Agent, or should I say, Doctor Scully. I was just trying to help."

Scully's nostrils flared, her irritation growing. "I'm sure you were. But I think we can handle our own affairs without unnecessary intervention." She placed her hand on her belly, her pregnancy not quite evident, but the evidence was there if you knew to look for it.

Whitney's smile faltered as her gaze followed the motion, her eyes narrowed slightly before she turned to Mulder. "Well, if you need anything, don't hesitate to ask." With that, she continued on her way, leaving a palpable tension in her wake.

"Scully, I…" he began, but Scully held up a hand to stop him.

"It's not your fault, Mulder," she said softly, her gaze softening. "I know you can't control other people's actions."

Mulder's lips curved into a grateful smile. "You always know how to put things in perspective."

Scully’s hand gently caressed her belly as she approached him. "Just like you always manage to find the truth in the midst of chaos."

He chuckled, his hand reaching out to cradle her cheek. "We make a good team, huh?"

"We always have," Scully replied, her jealousy fading as quickly as it had arisen.

X-Files IWTB: First Time React (Part III)

Wherein my anger overcomes my will to finish.

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere we go, Part III.

*Disclaimers*: I separate art from artist, acting was great, DD and GA did their best, my reaction is exaggerated for comedic purposes, etc. etc. etc.

Scratchy beard is over, and there is only pain, I presume, from here on out.

I’m going to try to keep this short and sweet because:

I don’t care about the plot much.

The characters are going to break apart whatever investment I have left in it.

…There’s nothing really compelling about anyone else but Mulder and Scully. Maaaaaaaaaaaybe? I’ll like Pedo Joe’s stand-off with Scully? Doubt it.

I am going to finish this movie with LIGHTNING SPEED because I caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan’t stand it, despite DD’s comedic timing and Mulderness (that is butchered by the script) and GA’s balanced grace and angst and Scullyness (that is butchered by the script); and honestly don’t think marinating in the details would be worth my time, despite the glorious opportunity to snark.

I was trying to get back to where I left off and skipped to this image of Pedo Joe:

I believe it represents my viewing experience quite accurately.

Back to it:

This scene’s not so bad: Mulder gets up to shave, working on Scully’s “scratchy beard” hint as an opportunity to free his unconscious mind by doing repetitive movements, eg. moving a razor up and down instead of quoting along to a tv. AND THAT’S A NICE TOUCH: it’s that domestic softening, that hinting at Scully’s lectures (in a good way) about tv being bad for his sleep patterns and Mulder learning to do other odd things with his hands instead.

And Scully trailing him in and beginning to change her tune when Mulder mentions the tears of blood, etc. It’s nice, it’s them. So far, so very good.

Nooooooooooooooow she’s gonna get uber jealous of Dakota Whitney

and reinterpret everything Mulder does through this stupid lens: shaving while thinking about the crime scene, letting (which he didn’t) Dakota take the fluff off his face, hanging around the FBI instead of following her back to a cozy, domestic life (which he CAN’T do because he’s tied to the case for good or ill no matter what-- they know where he lives, after all.)

Hoooooooooooooooooooooooow does Scully conclude this is about him finding his sister, hooooooooooooooow. She wasn’t even there for the longing gazes he exchanged with Drummond’s? photo, the implication being his behavior is a long-standing pattern of behavior. But as established in the last two parts, it ISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSN’T.

“It hasn’t stopped you from looking for her. …You cannot save her, not now and not ever.” THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS CASE, THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS SITUATION, THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HIS PAST, THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HIS FREEDOM THAT IS BOUGHT AND SOLD ON THE FBI’S WHIM, THIS IS NOT ABOUT YOUR PAIN AND TORMENT, THIS IS NOT. ABOUT. YOU. SCULLY.

“We need those men back!” Mulder yells-- and he is the only person doing the right thing now. And the movie will punish him and his motives for it.

The writers have unironically turned into early seasons' Syndicate men by depicting Mulder as an egomaniacal, unbalanced man on a mission… and Scully is giving him less grace and understanding than her own self how many years ago on their first case in Oregon.

“What are you doing?” asks Scully.

“Trying to ignore you--” THAT IS NOT MULDER. THAT IS STUPIDLY IMMATURE. WHAT.

PEDO JOE JUST STOOD THERE FOR HOURS WHILE THE FBI DUG AROUND; AND ONLY STARTED FOLLOWING HIS HUNCHES WHEN MULDER ASKED HIM A FEW QUESTIONS??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

I don’t know why, but that insignificant detail broke me.

I’m done. Skipping to parts now.

I skipped to the breakup.

“You asked for me to get involved, Scully, now I’m asking you to stay involved.”

YEAH, LIKE YOU PROMISED TO DO BECAUSE THAT WAS HIS ONE CONDITION.

“You helped them already, you broke the case for them, why don’t you let the FBI deal with it?” …Scully, the case isn’t broken. I understand you need support because of Christian and Mulder is completely dropping the ball there; but Scully, your medicine has done what it can (or would if you didn't give up on him as well for some reason) for the boy but there are REAL people whose lives are in danger, right now, and need to be rescued.

Scully gave up because Mulder wouldn’t let this go. This COULD, COULD have worked if Mulder was pushing her to join him back at the FBI; but that’s not the case here. What’s going on here is the fact that he’s on a high, he’s saving lives, he needs HER help that she promised to give (and hasn’t); and yes, this is hard, yes, this is inconvenient, yes, she feels like Christian is getting second-best; but this is her partner’s freedom, his LIFE (and hers) he is winning back. Just a bit longer and they can breathe freely. THEN they can fight about the FBI, to return or not to return, etc. THEN this fight can and could happen.

Would Scully still leave then? Apparently she did in the Revival; but here and My Struggle I posits it would have been a permanent rift and not a temporary one that was later written in (or hinted at) to blur the lines of the bad writing choices.

Here’s why this scene doesn’t work: Scully’s writing is already so thoroughly broken (written about extensively here and here) that her declaration makes no sense:

she was off-put by pedo compound but on fire while she and Mulder bounced theories after scratchy beard but off-put firmly after Whitney touched his face but then was-- you get the point. On top of that, Mulder-- for as narrow-minded as his focus tends to be-- ALWAYS checks in with Scully’s emotional well-being; and it’s usually her that sets her feelings aside so they can plow forward. If Scully has an objection, Mulder will pause or come at it from another angle that will appeal to her. Scully here cannot be appealed to or reasoned with; and Mulder is only “inconsiderate” in his drive because he’s, again, WINNING HIS FREEDOM. The very thing that's kept them from meeting their son again, etc.

Mulder is STILL giving her an out: he understands she’s a doctor now, that that isn’t her life anymore (BECAUSE IT’S NOT HIS), and just needs her help ON THIS CASE.

Scully: “I cannot look into the darkness--” PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFT, get that writing out of my ears, blegh, blegh, UCKCKCKCKKCC, it’s chocking me, eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

“The darkness” is so wattpad, my word.

“I’m fine with it, Scully, I’m okay, I’m good.” …WHAT sort of response is that? It makes it seem like Mulder’s addicted to this-- and in a way, he can be. But the PROBLEM is he’s now addicted at the expense of Scully???? Even though Scully has ALWAYS been addicted to it, TOO???? But she’s not now though she still is at times in the script(???) because… beeeeeeeeeeeecaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaause????????????????????????????

Mulder: “Where else would you want me to look to find these women alive?”

Scully: “I’m asking you to look at yourself.”

Exactly, Mulder. (Unironically the Windows crashing noise… meme. Whatever.) …Scully, you’re setting yourself up for the “unreasonable little woman at home” jokes and you’re SCULLY and why are you like this.

Mulder: “Why? I don’t think I’m the one that’s changed.”

Based. Like… you pulled a “based” out of me, wow.

Scully doesn’t want the darkness (UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK) in her home anymore. Fair. But he’s not bringing it into the home. Also, insert "there are people DYING, Kim" meme.

Another thing: “This is who I am. This is who I’ve always been” true-ish, Mulder, but not true enough. It implies you cut out her emotional needs-- which you haven’t since SEASON. TWO.-- for your quest… but also, she accepted that about you IN ALL THINGS, WHICH WAS IN SEASON SEVEN. YET. HERE WE ARE.

GILLIAN REALLY DID HER BEST WITH “PUT IT IN A BOOK” JUST LIKE SHE DID HER BEST WITH SCULLY’S REJECTION OF JACKSON IN THE MY STRUGGLE IV FINALE BUT IT’S STILL JUST. SO. AWFUL.

Wait, okay, so, this broke them up and Mulder learned how much he and Scully needed x/y/z for their relationship (despite how STUPID this is); and she explained how she’s at her limit and she doesn’t know what else to do, etc……………. And history repeated itself in a couple years because Mulder got depressed and gave up on them and just… didn’t… do… things.

Sidenote: I HAVE THOUGHTS about the Revival breakup that I’ll talk about sometime (that CC blamed Mulder’s depression on Colonization’s failure when, in reality, he went on the run because of other men who feared Colonization and if it DIDN’T come to pass Mulder would have been TRULY free and he and Scully could embrace life and meet William and etc. etc. etc. but instead Mulder just flogged himself becaaaaaaaaaaaaaause reasons despite winning and, yes, William was given up HOWEVER they'd now have the freedom and opportunity to meet him, etc. And yet. And yet. ANYWAY.)

SCULLY, YOU BROKE MULDER’S HEART-- THAT HURT ME. WOW.

HE CAN’T CHANGE WHO HE IS AND THIS WASN’T EVEN ABOUT WHO HE WAS BUT YOU BLAMED HIS WANTING TO HELP THOSE WOMEN ON A NONEXISTENT SAMANTHA-COMPLEX, PAINTED HIM AS AN OBSESSIVE NUT WHO THREW YOUR RELATIONSHIP ASIDE FOR THE WORK, AND MOVED OUT WHEN HE NEEDED YOU MOST WHEN YOU PROMISED, FROM THE START, TO BE THERE FOR HIM THROUGHOUT THIS CASE. WOW. WOW. WOW.

I will say: IWTB Mulder hair supremacy. My favorite of all his looks. Hands. DOWN.

Too late for this joke-- this movie’s Scully didn’t earn it.

“HEY” Scully yells; and waits for the villain to turn around before whacking him in the head with a VERY big and probably VERY heavy axe instead of, I don’t know, shooting him. “But she’s a doctor now” I say to myself-- erecting a straw man just so I can wear off my aggressively angry energy by beating it do death. I didn’t know that doctors, I counter to myself, who were former SPECIAL AGENTS ANNOUNCE WHEN THEY’RE GOING TO HIT THE BAD GUY WHILE BEING 5’2” AND HEAVING AN AXE OVER THEIR HEAD AT SAID BAD GUY.

Honestly me at this point:

Scully walks in and sees a woman in the midst of being chopped into sell-able body parts;

and it just… hit home to me that she wanted Mulder to give up on this case, this lady, and the other women, DESPITE being on fire for other cases relating to women in the past, ala Excelsis Dei, Unruhe, Small Potatoes, etc. etc. GOOD GOING, CHUMP.

Also, Mulder’s still tranked outside in the freezing cold, despite there being a team with Scully and Skinner (I think?) and… why didn’t she yell for the team to come help Mulder? Or someone? Or, I dunno, do that NOW rather than just send Skinner out to cuddle him??

Though that’s a nice moment, to be honest.

WAIT, IT’S LITERALLY JUST THE TWO OF THEM-- y’know what? Forget. It. Why isn’t there backup? No, NO, I am not rewinding to find out.

Skinman Cuddles, ™. WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. I'll take it.

I was showing my sis a pic of the house and she had the audacity to say “Oh, how very unremarkable” to my face before making her version of a smug face.

I’m too amused to be annoyed; but it’s that thin sibling line, y’know?

I fully support Mulder here: I’d be this annoyed, too. …I’m so tired.

THE VERY GROUP THAT PROMISED TO FREE MULDER THEN BACKSTABBED PEDO JOE WHO WAS WORKING IN THEIR BEST INTEREST WHICH MEANS I WAS 100% RIGHT IN MY ASSESSMENT THAT THEY CAN’T BE TRUSTED WHICH MEANS SCULLY WAS 100% WRONG IN TRYING TO SHOVE MULDER OFF THE CASE BECAUSE THEY WOULD HAVE WHOOPED HIM, TOO, IF HE DIDN’T HELP.

WELL, I GUESS SHE WOULD HAVE SAID THE SAME IF MULDER HAD LEFT THE CASE ON HER SAY-SO AND BEEN THROWN INTO PRISON. GUESS HE’S DEAD NOW.

Mulder wanted to at least clear that part of Pedo Joe’s name because it is an injustice… buuuuuuuuuuuuuuut Scully doesn’t care about justice now, even though she actively saved the lives of eviler men to later put on trial. Y’know, because they were facing JUSTICE.

Oh, the pain and the torment of Scully not caring because he was a pedo and then denying that she believed him ‘cuz he’s dead now and she doesn’t have to face the fact she was a SNIVELLING COWARD who had to be motivated to do what’s right BY A PEDO.

Isn’t this just a beautiful movie.

FINE. SHE ADMITTED SHE BELIEVED. WE’LL GIVE HER THAT.

And Mulder is willing to let it all go if she tells him what she believed-- y’know, like they used to do back in the day-- but the movie wants you to think this is new character growth for him when it’s very obviously not for even the most casual of X-Files watchers.

She has the gall to deny him his request… after she put him through SO MUCH in this movie by… I’m not reiterating, I’m tired, again.

The movie is trying to say that Scully directly contributes to Mulder’s cave troll lifestyle by not communicating with him; which would be cool if the Revival didn’t loom over the horizon, or, more precisely, IF THIS MOVIE DIDN’T BUTCHER THIS INTERESTING IDEA. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANYWAY.

Wait. So, Scully gave up on Mulder to do her job... but was ALSO giving up on her job ala Christian becaussssssssssssssssssssse until the pedo priest told her to keep going and it saved Mulder’s life and Christian’s……………………………………………………..

Please end. PLEASE, please end.

wOW. Pedo Joe has been made into a saint I guess because he didn’t give up. And I guess that’s supposed to be comforting for Scully because she didn’t give up, either, even though she did.

WAIT, MULDER DIDN’T KNOW SHE GAVE UP. HE DIDN’T. KNOW. SHE GAVE. UP.

Okay, see, Mulder was wildly out of character this movie, too; but the above realization is… not even Pilot Mulder because Scully didn’t have to say a word in the Pilot for him to read her moods. He’s always been in-tune with her (despite profiling, yadda yadda yadda); so, to suddenly put on blinders to hide away that "ability" just so the writers can extend that miscommunication over the ONE aspect they “get” about each other is laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazy, and baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad, and INFURIATING.

I just realized this movie is completely my vibe and that’s why I’m so passionate about this.

Mulder: “If Father Joe were the Devil, why would he say the opposite of what the Devil might say?”

I. Died. on the spot.

Look, you don’t have to have a religious background to know that this is the most brain-dead, stupid, inane take ever: cult leaders and other villainous exploiters have used this to their advantage, masking their motives behind religious speak.

(Sis--I’m fake crying from frustration and she’s nearby-- says: “Because he’s the Devil.”)

Why does Scully get weepy after Mulder says “Don’t give up” and STILL. INSIST. ON LEAVING HIM??? EITHER PERMANENTLY OR TO DO THE SURGERY OR BOTH????? UNTIL HE GIVES HER A HUG, I GUESS??

i. loathe. this. movie.

Now Mulder’s sayin’ “hey, ‘bout that kid? If you don’t feel like doin’ the surgery doodad, then we can bounce to vacay and let him deal, yo yo.” Again, Scully wasn’t the only character butchered in this movie. Was this nice of him to say? Yes. Is this a Mulderism? NO. A Mulderism would be to encourage her to do the right thing and promise a vacay AFTER.

Okay, you had your pretty romcom moment, can this END NOW????

I can live with the chest pat. It’s fine. But, again, it’s sort of… a moment from a better movie.

(There was a perfectly comedic moment when the music was just kicking up and then POW Chris's face was just THERE while I was trying to figure out what in the world was going on.)

Heya guys! I’m back with another post! But this one is about Fez Perry! If you guys wanna ask Perry and his siblings questions, I’m deciding to make posts about Perry and Sibs so you could get to know them before asking them questions! Finally we have the semi aquatic egg laying mammal of action in fez, the Fez Boi himself, Fez Perry the Fez Platypus aka Agent FezP!

Physical Appearance: Fez Perry is a greenish teal male platypus with yellow tinged tangerine webbing only on his back feet(odd traits that platypuses outside of Danville don’t have) He also has three black hairs on his head, a low long salmon orange beaver tail, deep dark brown eyes in an unnatural walleyed position making him look mindlessly stupid and derpy as a pet, and a duck bill that matches his webbing color. Under his fur, he wears the amulet of Juatchadoon, a siren pendant, and he mainly wears a fez on his head as Agent FezP. FezP also wears a fedora on his head but he wears it on underneath of his fez. Around his arm, he wears a light teal turtle bracelet which is his miraculous in camouflage mode.

Personality: He can be best defined as “The Sassy Bossy Flirty Dramatic Entertainment" younger brother to Perry. He kinda has same aspects as Perry, but the difference is that he is mostly sassy, bossy, dramatic, and entertainment. This is seen from the fact that he brought backup dancers to a long-lost temple and when he was dancing. He also seems loyal enough to wear a fez even though he wasn't in Egypt. He does have a difficult relationship with Perry but sometimes they get along with the rest of his brothers and sisters. As Agent FezP, he is proud of his abilities as a fez platypus and wants to prove himself to Perry that he can be a good secret agent for the O.W.C.A. As a dream demon, he can be manipulative and he is always sassy in order to get what he wants. When he’s making a deal with someone, his greenish teal hand starts burning with light teal flames. As a siren, he plays with someone’s emotions and he’s ready to show off his singing voice and feeds on the positivity around him.
