Throwback Thursday: Of this 1968 demonstration on the campus of Princeton University, Lewis M. Lebetkin '68 later wrote that his "GOOD IS BETTER THAN EVIL" sign had been misunderstood:
A contingent of pro-Vietnam War students and a group of suitably incensed antiwarriors had announced they would hold demonstrations at the same time and place. The evening before the expected clash, over dinner at Key and Seal Club, I and some other pseudoreactionary, mainstream radical satirists decided that what this campus really needed was a new party. ... we formed the Radical Middle Party, dedicated to upholding, more or less, the motto 'Moderation in almost all things.' We, too, would make signs, march, chant, and demonstrate.
The next day, I made my sign and headed for Nassau Hall. ... As I edged toward the speaker's platform on the steps of Nassau Hall, three radicals, a conservative, and a physics professor all asked me what my sign meant. Combining a poker face, a disdainful look, and a raised lef (or was it right?) eyebrow, I said to each with full solemnity, "I should think the meaning is self-evident." To my dismay, no one laughed. ...
a photographer from the New York Times snapped [a photo], with my sign as a backdrop. The picture ran in the Times the next day, then was picked up by the wire services and reprinted in Newsweek. 'Good is better than evil,' the founding principle of the Radical Middle Party, had made the big time!

"in this country american means white. everybody else has to hyphenate" ... toni morrison
"in 2007, abney received recognition for her painting 'class of 2007', done for her MFA thesis show. the painting is a diptych. in one panel, she is depicted as a blonde officer carrying a gun. in the second panel, her MFA classmates, all white, are painted as black inmates in orange uniforms" ... wikipedia
"i was trying to think of some interesting way to talk about race in the painting in a way that hasn't been done. i could easily paint black figures, but i felt that my classmates during previous critiques... i felt like they were sympathetic to certain things, but they couldn't really relate. so i thought why not just make them black? that was my whole thought process behind that. how would they feel if they were portrayed black? i had one classmate, i don't know, i just felt it would be uncomfortable for him, so i made him extremely dark skinned. that's the way i was thinking. i thought maybe they would understand it better if they were just in it" ... nina chanel abney
"hating people because of their color is wrong. and it doesn't matter which color does the hating. it's just plain wrong" ... muhammad ali
"i flipped over the painting and they were pretty surprised in the beginning. they didn't even think i'd painted them and then people started to recognize themselves" ... nina chanel abney

On October 14, 2023 Richard L. Merriman went to be with his Lord and Saviour.
Rick was born in Buffalo, NY, and raised in West Seneca, NY, as the only child of Harold Eugene Merriman and Lorana Matilda Merriman. He is survived by his wife Gloria, and their son, Ryan Merriman, and by several cousins.
Rick is preceded in death by his parents, a close Uncle Lee and Aunt Doris Merriman and their son, Dennis, as well as other aunts and uncles.
Rick was a member and ruling elder at a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America. He graduated with a Diploma in Bible from Bob Jones University and a B.A. Degree in Education from Shelton College. It was there he met his wife, Gloria. For most of their 47 years of marriage they lived in Cape May County, NJ until recently moving to West Virginia. Rick had finally retired in February 2023 from his position as Addictions Counselor for ARS (Addiction Recovery Systems) of Cape May Court House, NJ, where he also enjoyed responsibilities as Recovery Court Liaison.
Earlier work responsibilities include his position of Middle School Principal at Cape Christian Academy where he additionally coached the High School Soccer Team, leading them to Conference Championship one year. He also held the position of Family Therapist at Cumberland County Guidance Center for several years.
In addition to singing with their church congregation, Rick and his wife Gloria very much enjoyed performing with the Masterworks Choir and Orchestra in Ocean City, NJ.
Rick was a loving father and husband and is remembered by friends and family for his sense of humor, organizational skills, attention to detail, faithfulness in every task, and for his commitment and loyalty to his God, his family, his community, and his country.
Rick had a difficult time deciding to retire at the age of 76 because he still loved working to assist people in overcoming difficulties in their lives. He would often hear his clients repeat back to him his own phrases, such as "Do the right thing and you'll have the right outcome."
Some basic principles Rick lived by:
"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not [without finding fault]; and it shall be given him." James 1:5
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." Ephesians 2:8-9
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16
"Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God [revere and worship Him, knowing that He is] and keep His commandments: for this is the whole duty of man." Ecclesiastes 12:13

The street legal edition of the legendary Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 is an elusive beauty in Forza Horizon; its high price tag means that many players are turned away from this car, and not many oppurtunities have been presented to get it through other means, meaning that someone who has this car must be genuinely dedicated to the machine. Thankfully, I am that person, and the model pictured here is my pride and joy in this game; I've managed to turn it from a regular retro racer fighting the bottom of A-class to a bit of a monster destroying modern supercars in S1 with corner-heavy tracks.
