Hot Take: but as a fanfic writer I hate the attitude that the only way to transformative engage with a work through the written media is through fanfic

People go on and on about how fanfiction gives mythology back to the masses and other really flowery pretentious things but like even before commercial IP existed, artist’s works weren’t just in response to one singular thing

Yes Paradise Lost uses Biblical figures, but honestly what it is more in conversation with than the Bible itself is with epics like the Odyssey, Aeneid, Beowulf, or even Milton’s own experience with the English Civil War. He wanted to create a modern epic for the English language and his culture specifically, the Biblical backdrop was just equivalent mythological base that those other works used

Yes the Aeneid is a commissioned sequel to an already popular work, but the most powerful connections to Homer comes through Virgil’s original characters like Dido. Rather than plop down just any already established "delaying seductress" like Calypso or Circe, he crafts a sympathetic and compelling figure that humanizes Rome's greatest enemy and gives complexity and conflict to Aeneas' fated conquest

Ppl argue for the end of copyright by saying we can get queer Harry Potter and Star Wars adaptations quicker but like why must we be so tied to fundamentally limited texts? Why cant we use those works as springboards for how we think about wizarding schools and space mystics without feeling beholdened to play in another creator's world

For example this video recounts all of New Hope purely by using footage from Lucas' influence. Yet despite this unavoidable lineage, Stars Wars is not Flash Gordon or Kurosawa fanfiction. It stands on the shoulder of giants and wears its influences on its sleave but it is able to go to incredible far off galaxies by being an original project

Transformative media is about more than just namedropping an iconic character or retelling a story from a different POV. Literature and media is always in conversation whether you want it to be or not. Dont think the only way to comment on your latest passion is to demurely play with your dolls in the creator's shadows

A few days ago, I saw someone on reddit Talk about how historically accurate the American Girls' names were, and I wanted to do something similar but with the Sims' ones.

I'm going to do it with Strangetown's townies, because I believe that they speak spanish since the university's name is La Fiesta Tech (La Fiesta are spanish words). I'm going to do it based on data from Spain, my personal expirience and the years I think they were born.

Pascualín Curioso (Pascal Curious): Pascualín is a nickname for Pascual. He was born around 1975, his name was used around that year in Spain, although it wasn't popular enough and was starting to decrease in popularity (#188 in popularity at the start of the decade, slowly decreasing). Historical accuracy: 7/10.

Gumersindo Curioso (Vidcund Curious): It wasn't a popular name by the time I supose he was born (around the 80s), and from 1965 onward, It wasn't used. Historical accuracy: 3/10.

Lucas Curioso (Lazlo Curious): It wasn't popular around 1985, but in the next decade it started growing slowly. The average age is 15, so It isn't near Lazlo's one. Historical accuracy: 3.5/10.

Elena Pérez (Jenny Smith): It's peak was during 1970 and 1989, which it's between when I think she was born. I think it was used enough times to be in the #50 position more or less. Historical accuracy: 10/10.

Jaime Pérez (Johnny Smith): I am not sure if his name is Jaime or Santiago, as Jaime is a common nickname for that name. Since the year 1984 onwards, Jaime has been a popular name, the average age is 42 years. Historical accuracy: 8.5/10. Santiago, on the other hand, has been a more lineal name (in the graphic, it's shape os pretty regular). The average age is 49 years, which is a bit more than what I imagined, it's a possibility as well. Historical accuracy: 8/10.

Inés Pérez (Jill Smith): The average age is 35 years, which is accurate with the age Jill appears to be. By rank, it hasn't been lower than #38. It started to increase in popularity between 1990 and 2000, and it's peak was during the next decade, only 450 times less uses. Historical accuracy: 9.5/10.

Olvido Fantoche (Olive Specter): I don't know when she was born, since she has been able to escape the death, but I suppose it was between 1940 an 1960. It's peak was during the first mentioned decade. It is a really accurate name both historically and considering his background. Historical accuracy: 9/10.

Ofelia del Moho (Ophelia Nigmos): The average age is 67 years, and it has been decreasing in popularity since 1960 and 1970. By the time I suppose she was born, only 48 people had that name, but since that decade, it has been regular. Historical accuracy: 2/10.

Circe Panero (Circe Beaker): It isn't near popular. It's peak was in this last decade and the first times it was used, it was during the 80s. I suppose she's near Pascal's age, and there is no data. Historical accuracy: 0.5/10. I think that Circe wasn't born in ST, but I'm not sure, where she's from, so I'm gonna leave it like that untill I have better answers.

Tito Reclutas (Ripp Grunt)/Tito Curioso (Tycho Curious): Here I have the same problem as with Johnny: It is both a nickname and a name. I don't know what is it since the general's sons' names are weird. If it is their name, it isn't accurate, because it's peak was between the 50s and 70s. Historical accuracy: 2/10. If it is a nickname, it could be from names as Ernesto, Héctor, Roberto, Alberto, etc. All of them end Up with -to. The average peaks of names like that are between the 70s and mid 80s. They weren't popular enough during the decades they were born, but they weren't in not use either. Historical accuracy: 5.5/10.

Fofo Reclutas (Buck Grunt): It is just a nickname, of names such us Adalberto, Beto, Rodolfo. The peaks are the same as Ripp's one. By the time he was born, the names had suffered an important decrease or were used in less than 50 people. Historical accuracy: 3/10.

I think that I have covered all the names I could find. The names that don't appear is because they are used in less than 5 people.

“ Luca, love. ” She greets, slipping into the seat next to him. She’s not sure when Luca became more important to her than the Order, but at some point it had become a simple fact that she would do what she could to keep him safe, even at the expense of the Order. Not that she’d admit as such under threat of death. To have wavering loyalty to the Order is akin to treason, an affront punishable by death. Dramatic, yes. But necessary in a way, given the nature of the Order. In a staunchly controlled world, anything out of place must be cut down lest it poison the rest.

Unfortunately for the Order, Circe found poisons fascinating, not that she was allowed to play with them in the chemistry labs her father had finally allowed her to work in. But poison could mean more than chemicals. People could be their own type of poison. It was underestimated how easy it was to toy with others, even in such a strict regime. Sentience will be sentience and where there is sentience there is emotion and bias, and where there is emotion and bias there are always openings to manipulate if you look closely enough.

Perhaps that’s why she likes Luca after all. He’s always been too good at seeing her machinations and while somewhat frustrating, he’d never caused trouble for her and there was something pleasant about having someone on equal footing with her. Someone that forces her to be real- or as real as one was allowed to be in the Order. “ I heard the most amusing story and I immediately thought of you. Are you free? ” ‘Amusing’ might be a lie, but one never knew who was listening in passing and Luca would hear through it in any sense, so did it even really count?

As bruxas do céu não demoraram ir embora, até porque Teddy, como Effie, recusou qualquer recompensa e ficou tida como boa e pura, então não demorou que a barreira caísse e Theodore descesse até mim e voltasse a sua verdadeira forma

-- Isso elas não previram -- Ele disse em som tom doce e brincalhão -- Onde estão os outros? -- Com exceção de Valerian que ainda estava amarrado e tinha visto tudo, Teddy o desamarrou e ele caiu de joelhos diante dele

-- Eu reconheço Theodore como o rei de Valerian -- Ele disse com lágrimas nos olhos

-- Promete que será um bom garoto?

-- Sim, sim senhor -- Teddy sorriu olhando para baixo, aquele sorriso nunca mais seria visto de outra forma, então ele olhou para mim -- Onde está Luca?

Não demorou até que eu achasse Alberto, Adnrew e Luca no meio da floresta, Andrew ainda estava com Luca no colo rodeado de animais, paralisado, porque os animais eram todos feras, e Alberto estava do lado dele, tranquilo, quando me viu abriu um sorriso

-- Bibi! Não vai acreditar, as feras da floresta reconhecem Luca como seu herdeiro! -- Pisquei

-- É mesmo? -- Teddy correu até Andrew e pegou o filho no colo

-- Alberto sabe falar com esse bichos -- disse o príncipe assustado

-- Isso é maravilhoso -- Disse as feras -- Ele será o rei bruxo

-- Ele nos terá como força da floresta -- Disse um tigre das neves, líder das feras

Voltamos a tempo de batizar Luca, Valerian foi mandado para a prisão por traição e perdeu seu título, Andrew ainda estava pensando para quem dar o título de Valerian e depois de um mês, o príncipe Andrew Alcott, foi finalmente coroado o rei de Valência, Theodore, ao lado dele, foi coroado rei consorte, Thomaz e Branca nem tinham ido embora porque eram muitas as comemorações que se seguiriam, na mesma semana, ele lançou a pedra fundamental do que seria a primeira escola de bruxaria de Valência, para todas as crianças, nascidas bruxas ou não, ele fez um lindo discurso, escrito por mim, é claro, sobre o acesso ao conhecimento da magia, que agora seria disponibilizado a todos, e pelo o número de plebeus presentes, ao contrário do que Valerian achara, muitos pais iriam querer mandar seus filhos para lá quando ela ficasse pronta. Iria ser um palácio de cinco andares no centro da cidade, com dezenas e dezenas de salas e dormitórios e refeitório e tudo o que meu pai, avô, bisavô e tataravô sonhou, Alberto ajudou no projeto trazendo de Flakner rascunhos e ideias. E por falar em Alberto, ele se formou antes do tempo e com muito louvor, eu estive em sua formatura na Ilha de Flakner e chorei horrores quando ele foi consagrado um bruxo senior, com especialização em saberes do mar

-- Estou tão orgulhosa de você... -- Lhe falei em frente ao retrato do meu pai no corredor -- Eu tenho certeza de que ele iria te adorar... A mais absoluta certeza

-- Por tudo o que eu ouvi sobre ele por aqui... Eu também tenho essa certeza

Arriscou a sua vida por seu rei e seu futuro rei, agiu com esperteza, rapidez e conseguiu vencer uma vilã apesar da óbvia desvantagem de tempo de estudo... Valência tem uma dívida eterna para contigo. Bibiana Malesiana Circe Dianlova Castanhedo... A sua valentia, sua resiliência, seu conhecimento, bondade e infinita paciência, a levou realizar o sonho de seus pais, fazendo o impossível e... O destino trabalhar para você... É com grande certeza e segurança que a tenho em minha casa e como madrinha de meu filho... Além de futura ministra da educação de magia -- Arregalei os olhos, ele não tinha falado nada, apenas me piscou -- Valência tem uma dívida eterna com você, por isso a concedo o título de duquesa de Valerian e o terceiro lugar na linha de sucessão -- Muitas coisas a sentir, mas primeira coisa que eu pensei foi no casarão a beira mar -- apesar da desvantagem técnica, foram a luta contra os inimigos e livraram esse reino de um destino sombrio e possivelmente bem triste... O resto da festa foi apenas alegria e curtição, cantei e dancei com todos, não havia bruxa mais feliz naquele reino.

7 anos depois

-- Não foi fácil fazer essa empadinha com o... Boi, claro, boi boi boi boi -- Repetiu Mafalda nervosa enquanto terminava de montar uma lancheira -- Mas aqui está, Luca... Luca! Luca, onde está você?!

-- Aqui em cima! -- Chamou o garoto -- Estou aqui em cima -- Mafalda olhou para cima e só não gritou preocupada porque estava acostumada

-- Desça agora mesmo! O que eu já falei sobre ficar voando na cozinha?! -- O príncipe desceu e pegou a lancheira

-- Eu estou animado, é hoje que abre a escola da dinda

-- Promete para mim que vai ser um bom menino e que não vai ficar se exibindo para as outras crianças

-- Prometo Má... -- E deu-lhe um beijo na bochecha, Teddy entrou na cozinha também muito animado

-- Quem está pronto para ir a escola?

-- Papai! -- Luca deu um salto que foi parar nos braços de seu pai

-- Como você está pesado... Mafalda, pode diminuir os doces desse garoto

Na inauguração, todos estavam presentes, também todos os professores que Alberto e eu conseguimos recrutar ao longo dos anos, era o suficiente e a haviam tantas, mas tantas crianças que no começo achei que a escola não daria conta, mas ela pode abrigar a todos, se alguém mais quisesse entrar já não teria mais vaga, Luca vinha saltando e Teddy o puxava para o chão, ele havia nascido com toda a magia de seu pai, e com o apetite do outro pai também, ensinei a ele tudo o que eu podia e enquanto a escola não abria, eu dava aulas para ele e Amy, a filha que tive com Alberto e que tinha puxado seus lindos olhos azuis

-- Em que classe eles vão ficar? -- Me perguntou Alberto -- Eles sabem mais do que qualquer outra criança

-- Vai ter uma classe especial só para eles -- Respondi quando Labur pousou como um corvo no chapéu de Alberto
