Dior Plagiarism and Cultural Appropriation
Tumblr media
Dior copied the traditional skirt unique to China, which is cultural appropriation. This situation is not unique, Dior is a repeat offender when it comes to plagiarism and cultural appropriation.

【History Note】
After the rule of "Governance during the Zhenguan Reign/贞观之治” By Emperor Taizong and the rule of “Governance during the Yonghui Reign/永徽之治”during the Emperor Gaozong and Empress Wu Zetian of the Tang Dynasty, the Tang Dynasty ushered in a prosperous age.
During this period, more styles of women's attire appeared. At that time, women in Chang'an(Tang Dynasty capital) popularized a tall round-shaped hair bun, called the double-ring Wangxian hairstyle(双环望仙髻),and insert a long slender flower shape hairpin on this hair bun.
Woman wearing this " Mofu/陌腹" on the outside.Mofu is made up of thin strips of cloth, and if it is a person with status or money, it is even more spliced into dozens of strips.Under the Mofu, woman wearing a wearing a 间色裙 (inter-color skirts).
Emperor Gaozong promulgated order call" 建东都诏/Jiandongdu" changed the Luoyang Palace to the East capital of Tang. Since then, Tang Dynasty has opened “two capital eras”. At that time, the fashion of Changan quickly scraped Luoyang and became popular in Luoyang, but in the end this extravagant style was banned by Emperor Gaozong, so that woman's dressing are not so extravagant, but later at the beginning of Emperor Xuanzong period, this kind of women fashion has come out again for short period.

◈   @femtaile said:   ❛ ☯ for Mei! ❜  //  outfit headcanons
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mei was brought up in a swirl of pastels and cute appliqués.  Her clothes were well-made and durable, often bought second-hand and subsequently sold on.  It was not a matter of money – her parents were successful in their respective careers – but instead from ethical concerns and environmental awareness.  This conscientiousness would impact Mei, her studies, and ultimately her career.  It wasn’t uncommon for Mei to dress in clashing patterns or colours, her parents giving her the freedom to mix and match as she pleased even when the result was a touch chaotic.  Although her clothing was often cute, Mei was a child who enjoyed the outdoors, who climbed trees and paddled in creeks, who hiked with her parents on the weekends, and her knees and elbows often stuck with equally kitsch plasters.

So for basically my whole life I'd grown up with and was resigned to accept that the chinese concept of formal/nice clothing of my and the previous generation has been western clothes. So at any awards ceremonies or performances, entertainers would show up mostly in western suits/dresses and maaaaaybe you'll spot the occasional cheongsam if they're going for a Wong Fei Hong vibe. Which, you know, kinda sucks if you have any concept of western cultural imperialism in asia.
So when the hanfu revivalist movement started, I was waiting to see when it would enter the mainstream -- my hope was for fashion designers to integrate traditional/dynastic elements into their work and make it common place enough that I can buy this shit online for ME. Because I WANT.
Though some of the designs can be a bit hit or miss, I am LOVING what various stars and entertainers are wearing out and about now.
Anyway - here's a collection of Xiao Shunyao's modern hanfu inspired/hybridized stage outfits from the last couple years. For his MLC performances, his stylists seem to be borrowing inspiration from his Di Feisheng and possibly other character costume silhouettes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'd been seeing a few comments about how his outfits play with gender - and some of his outfits do! But I think the interesting thing to discuss is from which standard is he playing with gender? Because from a western perspective, the things he does with his western suit tops, belting on top of the jacket for a tightly cinched waist, and the addition of a trailing skirt = femme. But if you're talking from a hanfu-hybridized pov, that's just a modern take on hanfu and having any of those elements is not inherently femme and would often read masc to me.
So these things aren't necessarily gendered because they exist traditionally in chinese men's clothing or costume designs (ie video games, comics, historical fiction illustrations and film, etc, so therefore in the modern lexicon of masculine/acceptable for men):
presence or lack of a skirt
silky, velvety, gauzy or sparkly material choice, esp in formal or stage clothing
short or long length of skirt
embroidery
flowers/floral/bird designs
folding fans
certain styles of makeup
beading, gold, tassels, jewels
non-chunky jewelry
headbands
widely flowing silhouettes
What XSY's stylists are doing with some western clothing items are interesting. I'm convinced there have been one or two western jacket tops made of thinner material that they're folding over the front, and belting down instead of buttoning (which then matches with his other outfits that are designed specifically to do this). Then they're adding a skirt, cloak or bracer element to it.
The western portions often bring a military minimalist feel which they balance with a more gauzy material in the skirt or cloak portions.
Things I think are playing with gender:
row 1 - image 1: red di feisheng-inspired outfit
The lace-up girdle is there to match the bracers in both material and style. And it's positioned to be similar to the heavy belt that Di Feisheng wears. HOWEVER. That style of girdle/corset-like clothing item can't be divorced from the modern idea of sexy leather corsets. So imo, this waist piece on that outfit was a choice. Especially when paired with his allergic-to-collars-higher-than-his-sternum necklines. And if you take into context how masculine yet female coded his character is in the drama, the whole look evokes that.
row 2, image 1: black western suit with belt on top, hat, cloak, black boots and not-visible but also a black tassel fringe skirt
Hat and cloak moves the intention of the outfit from western toward a more Asian slant, because alone, it looks like a western black suit with western heeled boots, cinched waist with a lady's belt (seated photoshoot) and western style tassel skirt. The suit top consists of a vest and a shrug-like sleeve portion that appears masculine at first glance. But take the shrug and pair it with the tassel skirt (I can't find the red carpet photos but here is a better view of the skirt when seated), and I think you got a look that's both intentionally edging toward the femme in a western sense but also confusing matters by hiding within the parameters of both western and chinese traditional male styling.
row 2 - image 2 : white asymetrical western jacket styled in a front fold-over style, gauze skirt, trailing pearl embellishments
The more traditional leaning version of this is the white outfit in row 3 that he wears to the Hi6 Hello Saturday variety show -- the skirt portion on that outfit is one I'd consider non-gendered. Row 1, images 2 and 3 are examples of masculine/neutral uses of gauze that plays with flow of form but isn't inherently femme. This stage outfit is very western-appearing masculine suiting, until you hit the skirt which is giving me long ballerina tie-on skirt with the additional swan/mermaid pearl strings. Imo, another example of deliberately using traditional masculine styling but switching it up with the combination of material choice and make that is feminine.
row 2, image 3: black space military boots, black suiting, black -silver ombre sequin trailing skirt and white gauzy shawl with black floral design
The over all design is going for a masculine military-feel. (think this outfit for shen langhun) But instead of a thicker military cloak, it's replaced with a woman's gauze shawl and a skirt that trails behind him very much like the back of a woman's formal fish-tail gown when he moves around. If you take into context Wang Herun's outfit is a white-silver sequined dress cut in a way to also give a space-military-queen vibe, imo they both coordinated their outfits to balance out with both femme and masc qualities.
Thoughts? I'm curious what others think about this.
While I wait for the CNY photoshoot for XSY's red and black look, here's him with his stage collaborators with a nice range of skirt lengths, period influences and material choices. The woman in the center is the one with the most military-fighter design out of the bunch. The dudes are all in variations of formal-wear-with-good-kicking-boots (and lots of crotch space).

hey (culture ask incoming) im wondering about weddings in china and whether people generally wear more western style wedding clothes or traditional chinese style?
(Long-winded answer incoming)
Depends.
I would say Chinese/hanfu style wedding attire has been making a big comeback (so to speak) in recent years as a side effect of the hanfu revival movement, but there is also Chinese wedding attire that is distinctly it's own genre of clothing, i.e, bridal/groom wear. When you look at it, you know (if you know) that it's wedding attire. More on this in a second.
Still, for those who can afford it, it is popular these days to wear both western style wedding attire and Chinese wedding attire. Most people who I've seen wear both change into the Chinese attire for the wedding banquet. If they wear a western wedding dress, it will be at the ceremony/walking down the aisle. Likewise, if they wear both hanfu and Chinese wedding attire, they will wear the hanfu for the ceremony. Another thing to keep in mind is that in China, it is quite popular to take wedding photos in a myriad of outfits, not just the one you will be wearing on the occasion. So people nowadays may take photos in all the different kinds of wedding attire (via clothing rentals), whether they are going to wear it at their wedding or not. In that spirit, they still technically wear both western and Chinese style wedding clothes.
Hopefully that answers your question there. I have a #chinese wedding that covers a lot of videos but in which you can see the types of gowns and all that which I will briefly go into below.
So: when it comes to "traditional Chinese style" wedding attire, what does that really mean?
To me, three main types of clothing come to mind: 1) Chinese Wedding Attire™ , 2) Chinese style wedding attire, 3) Wedding hanfu
1) Chinese Wedding Attire™, AKA 秀禾服 Xiùhé
Visually distinct, it is not really hanfu nor qizhuang but a secret third thing.... In this case, it is a blend of Qing dynasty and Republican era styles dubbed "xiuhe". As bridal wear specifically, it is actually a rather recent trend (21st century), but it's become a fixture in Chinese wedding wear. While the colors can vary wildly and magnificently, the classic colors here are gold and red.
The style that exists today shows Qing dynasty influence in its construction and at its core consists of both bride and groom wearing embroidered tang suit tops and a matching silk skirt. The bride usually wears hair ornaments/pins in place of a veil. Since there are pins in the hair, brides may wear a xiapei/cape with a long train instead.
A few bridal styles (keep in mind that these are just the classic cuts and colors—there are other styles/colors that contain recognisable elements of bridal wear but are made of different fabrics, have different draping, have more tassels, have a softer look, etc):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
2) Chinese style wedding attire
This is admittedly somewhat of the same thing as Wedding Attire™, just toned down as it was more popular/commonplace in the last century, when it was what was most affordable for most, but it's a style that nonetheless comes to mind. With this, the key is simply that the bride wears a mostly all red dress/top+skirt and the groom wears a suit. Bride and groom will also often wear a red flower/ribbon pinned to their top or worn around them gift-wrapped style, haha. My mom just wore a red top and bottom to her wedding dinner (that's as much detail as I've ever gotten out of her lol) when she got married in the early 80s. Another thing is, since white is a funerary color/color of death in Asian cultures, some people also just wear Western style wedding dresses that are red.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3) Wedding hanfu
As you can imagine, this is ornate hanfu that is worn for weddings. Song/Ming style hanfu is particularly popular here. This clothing is traditional in the sense that it has historical basis and is what those who could afford to word for weddings historically. Historical wedding colors varied but color pairings like red & blue and red & green are traditional (man wears red, woman wears blue/green; 红男绿女). Wearing hanfu for weddings is a trend that has become popular with the hanfu revival movement and is, as you might guess, a trend for Han Chinese people
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chinese ethnic minorities have their own wedding attire that they may choose to wear/wear as well (if they do a banquet, etc). Or they might just wear red/xiuhe/western style dresses, too—this is another area where wedding photos let you basically wear everything.
(just a few examples:)

Lea and Pablo's clothes..!! Pablo's is called "barong Tagalog" / "dress (shirt) of the tagalog", Lea's is called "baro't saya" / "blouse and skirt". Fun fact, do you guys know the flamenco shawl / "mantoncillos" partially has its origins in the philippines?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Its also known as the Manila shawl; In more antiquated tagalog, it is known as the Alampay- The traditional shawl which was a part of the prehispanic clothing of Tagalog women (many of whom lived in Maynila, later hispanized into Manila) - During the earliest years of Spanish colonialism, they were made of pineapple lace, called Pañuelo, which were copied by Chinese merchants and recreated with Chinese embroidery motifs.

Song Camisole, intro + tutorial | December, 2023
(Text below)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A camisole was the inner most layer of a Song lady’s outfit. Camisoles from the Song dynasty are simply named 宋抹sòng mǒ by modern historians (literal translation: Song camisole). The little camisole discussed in this post is based on the sample excavated from the tomb of Ms. Huang Sheng (full maiden name; she died at 17 in 1243 after being married for one year) in Fuzhou, China, hence it is in late Southern Song style. As far as I know, this is the only surviving sample of Song camisole in this style.
From the excavation report:
The artefact has one seam down the centre front. It has an outer layer and a lining, both in plain silk. It is 55cm long and 39-40cm wide. The shoulder ribbons are 34-35cm long, and the waist ribbons are 35-36cm long. From the report and the photograph which I can access, there doesn’t seem to be any dart. Perhaps Ms. Huang Sheng was flat-chested so a dart was unnecessary; nowadays traditional costume makers and wearers usually like a dart in the middle (usually via shaping on the CF seam) to better fit the bust.
I made this pink one nearly two years ago. You might be able to see a little bit of fabric being taken in on the top of the CF seam, which is the dart/shaping I was talking about.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Below is a tutorial for making one of these. It works for smaller bust sizes – you can add darts on the sides to do a full bust adjustment.
Pattern
You need two measurements:
The front half of your chest circumference (which is NOT the full chest circumference divided by two). If you want, you can add 1~2cm of positive ease to this.
The desired length. It has to be long enough to be tucked into a skirt.
The dart (for me) is usually 1~1.5cm on each side of the CF seam. If your fabric is wide enough, you can just make a dart and eliminate the CF seam. I’m not sure why the shoulder ribbons on the artefact are so short, since the common way of wearing this camisole the ribbons need to be at least 80~90cm. The depth of the armscye apparently depends on your body shape, but it shouldn’t be too low—usually the little side loops are on the same level as the bust point or just a little bit lower. The shape and size of the little triangles depend on your taste.
All figures in the sample below fit a pretty standard European size 36 with a total height of 160cm. (EDIT!! I made a mistake. It should be European size 34 i.e. bust circumference 80)
Tumblr media
(Also: how you would arrange the pattern pieces on a traditional kimono bolt, if using kimono silk for this.)
Fabric
You’ll want something drapey and smooth that feels nice on bare skin. I’d always recommend silk, but a cotton/silk blend or a soft cotton also works fine. For synthetic fabrics, some viscose fabrics (or their eco-friendly relatives such as tencel) could work. For the pink one I made, I used repurposed kimono silk. The yellow one is a Chinese jacquard from a blend of silk and viscose.
If you are using redeemed kimono silk (or new kimono silk) with a width of approx. 33cm, one meter is about enough. This is very convenient because one meter is a common length of kimono sleeves and you can find fabrics sold in individual lengths in stores that specialise in this. If you are using a Western fabric, you only need to consider the length of the ribbon and whether you are willing to cut it on the weft. If cutting on the warp, you’ll need one meter. (They don’t need to be cut on bias though you can.)
You also need a lining fabric for the main body. I usually use a half-half cotton/silk blend about 12momme thin (I buy it in bulk because I use it for a lot of things.)
Sewing
First, sew the ribbons.
I starched the yellow fabric for the ribbon part because it was just so slippery and refused be folded. After I starched it, I was able to fold it right side out and sew with an invisible stitch. However, I would recommend starching as little as possible and making your starch as diluted as possible, because starch can be SUPER hard to wash out and leave your silk stiff.
Tumblr media
Sew the CF and the dart, if any, respectively for the lining and for the shell.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sew the little triangles. If you cut your triangles on grain, the hypotenuse edge is likely on bias, which means it is likely to be stretched out, leading to a gaping neckline (which is a pet peeve of mine). There are two ways to prevent this. A) Since you have a lining and a shell, you can cut the lining with its hypotenuse edge on grain, so that each of the three edges of the triangle is stabilised by one layer of fabric, which is what I did for the pink camisole. B) You can add a tape to the seam allowance, which is what I’m showing in the yellow camisole. I used a thin silk ribbon (usually used for silk ribbon embroidery) and pinned it to the seam allowance, making sure not to stretch the seam so that it’s at the right length. You can sew it down to both layers of the allowance or just one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After stablising the hypotenuse edge, you can sew the triangle by placing the fabrics right side together and sandwich the shoulder ribbon in-between. The bottom edge needn’t be sewn. Turn it right side out when you finish.
I also add tapes to the underarm edges, which are also on bias.
Tumblr media
Place the body layers right side together, sandwiching the triangles, loops and waist ribbons between them (baste in place if needed). Sew all around, leaving only a small opening on the bottom edge so that you can turn the whole thing right side out.
I do a little fold for the bottom edge so that the lining fabric does not show.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I whip-stitched close the small opening. It is also possible to do an invisible stitch, if your fabric is stable enough.
Tumblr media
And there you have it~
When I wear the camisole, it is never without an outer layer of clothing that covers my back, which is mostly for historical accuracy, and unfortunately for safety and privacy too because I can never know if someone decides to pull the ties loose. So that’s my last bit of suggestion!

Adventure 11 - Fake Superstition Turned Real
This all started from a casual lunch discussion. If you're not interested, you can skip to slightly further down.
I was having lunch with my team and it landed on a discussion about odd traditions certain people have. They were talking on and on and I was just bored out of my mind. I felt like I needed to contribute. So I came up with a fake tradition.
"Did yall know there are some people that believe if you have sex on Chinese New Year Eve, you will have a good relationship that year?"
"Really?" My manager asked
"Ya. Thats why so many people born in the end of year."
Instead of fact checking what i said, they started talking about how more people were born in the end of the year...
Tumblr media
(Hopefully she doesn’t see this post lolll)
I thought that was the end of it. Till our weekly team drinks on Wednesday night. On that day, only one of my colleague, my manager and I could make it. We had drinks and just casually chatted. My colleague then had to leave early and just left my manager and I.
"That day, what you said during lunch, is it true?"
I got slightly confused before it clicked. I just said yes to see where it would go. And she started telling me how she telling me how she is no longer young and how she focused so much on her career but she don't want to be single.
I comforted her by telling her the standard "oh you should not settle stuff".
"Do you think it works a few weeks before the eve of CNY?"
"Errr welllll..."
"No harm trying your this superstition is guess? I had a good time last time too hahaha" she said.
She booked a grab to her place and we left the bar. In the car, she started touching my dick and feel it slowly get hard. I had the urge to just face fuck here there and then but held back. I wanted to return the favour, but she was wearing a tight pencil skirt with a low cut buttoned top making it difficult to keep it discrete. Part of her bra was on display and I could see the driver trying to get a look at it.
She told me she rents the place and stays alone. I could tell that she was slightly drunk as she did not care that the driver was there at all. She then said I could be as wild as I want.
Once we reached her place and her door closed, she tied up her hair and got on her knees to undo my pants. My cock sprang out and slapped her face. She proceeded to start stroking and her mouth started sucking on my balls. Seeing her face under my cock got me even harder. Before long, part of my dick was disappearing in her mouth.
It got sloppy real fast. I felt slightly bad that she was doing all the work. So I dragged her by her hair and walked her to the sofa. Once she was on the sofa in doggy position, I pulled up her skirt and to my delight, her panties was damp with her juices. She was already wet, ready for my dick. I pulled it down and placed my dick at the entrance.
"How desperate do you want it?"
"I need it master. This slut needs...AHHHH"
As usual, I did not wait for her to finish and thrusted it in. The back of her sofa was a mirror wall. I could see her eyes roll back as i continued thrusting in and out of her pussy. Moans filled the room to the point where i was slightly worried her neighbours would complain. But maybe they are used to her moans since she probably fucks alot.
"Fuck master.. Just like that.. Last time.. I had a dick... in my pussy.. was 5 years... ago..."
I was puzzled.
"I dont remember it feeling so good"
"Great. I want you begging for more."
I turned her around and continued fucking her missionary with my hands on her throat choking her.
"These shirt is blocking my access to your tits"
"Sorry master"
She began slowly unbuttoning her shirt. I, on the other hand, was not that patient. I pushed her hands away and rippied her shirt open. Buttons were flying everywhere and it revealed her heavily padded nude colour bra. As my cock continued in and out of her, I pulled the bra down and pulled on her tits. Using her nipples as handles to move her in and out of my dick.
I suddenly just stopped and walk to sit on the window seat. She looked at me in confusion as I stroke my dick looking at her.
"Crawl here and keep my dick warm slut"
"Yes master" she got on all 4s and crawled over on the cold hard floor. Once in front of me, she started moving her head up and down. Each time trying to get deeper and deeper.
"You like the taste of your juices?"
"Mhmmm" as she sucks away.
I wrapped her hair around my fingers and controlled her head movements. Without warning I would stop her head from coming up till she gagged. Tears were flowing out of her eyes and her make up ruined but she did not ask to stop.
Once I was satisfied with the wetness of my dick, I got her up and pressed against the window before fucking her hard. It was late and she stayed quite high up. So I was not too worried anyone would see.
"Yeaa moan out loud. Show your neighbourhood how much of a slut you are."
"im fucked... so sillyyy"
I gave her surprisingly nice ass a few good spanks and pulled her head back to degrade her more.
I was about to cum so I got her on her knees and she started stroking with both hands.
"Open your mouth and stick your tongue out."
She opened her mouth and stuck her tongue out as instructed. With her eyes closed, I shot my cum all over her face. She licked the last few drips leaking out and cleaned it up like a pro.
"Don't forget me when you get a boyfriend okay?" I told her looking at her cum coated face. She smiled with one eye open as the other of covered in cum.
Slept on her sofa and went again in the morning for "extra luck" before heading to office.
