OC asks
I have matched some random questions from that OC ask list to some random characters and here are the most relevant/interesting ones!
Tumblr media
6. How much thought does your oc put into what they wear/look like? Any reason why?
Ash only wears clothes that are 1) comfortable and 2) unremarkable, in classic colors like blue (lots of blue), grey or dark green. His main objective is to go unnoticed as he hates being the center of attention. He often wears an additional layer, like a sweater, because he’s sensitive to the cold. He’s aware that he is not stylish and he does not care at all.
Tumblr media
14. What is your oc’s speech like? How loud are they usually? Do they have an accent or a stutter?
Gloria has a very soothing voice and an articulate and quiet way of speaking. She is definitely not loud, but she speaks with confidence. In fact, she should make ASMR videos!
Tumblr media
22. How easily does your oc fare in the sun? Do they tan or burn easily? Are they completely unaffected?
Ulrich’s skin is a Type I (always burns, does not tan). He hates hot days and summer in general because he has to wear sunscreen. Which he doesn’t bother to do. So he gets sunburn. Go figure. He kind of fixed the problem by wearing pants and long sleeves, even during heatwaves but... yeah. Not ideal.
40. What languages does your oc know? Are there any they want to learn but haven’t had the chance to? How good are they at picking up new ones?
Ulrich’s mother tongue is Danish, and he picked up English pretty easily from listening to music (and then moving out of his country of course). He also speaks decent German because his father (who’s German) insisted he learned. Uli is actually good at languages. He’s got perfect pitch, that helps.
Tumblr media
27. What is your oc’s sleep schedule like? Are they a night owl, an early morning riser, or do they get any sleep at all?
Unlike his son Erik, whose sleep schedule is completely fucked up, Seth goes to bed whenever he feels tired. He does not need to sleep long (5-6 hours are more than enough for him) but he sleeps like a log. So typically, he would come home super late at night, go to bed immediately for a few hours and feel refreshed by 8am. Lucky man.
Tumblr media
28. How organized is your oc? How important is organization to your oc?
Organization is super important to Laurie, he’s a bit fastidious. The only moment in his life when he cut himself some slack was when he went into hiding and lived on his own for some time. The mess in that old house somehow reflected the mess in Laurie’s head. Aside from that specific moment when he was a bit lost, being extremely well-organized, both in his work and in his private life, is second nature to him.
93. What is your oc’s preferred learning style? Observation, hands-on, instruction? Do they take notes or memorize?
Laurie always tries to understand all aspects of a subject, dig deeper into it and make it his own. He prefers a visual support: written words, graphics, codes, etc. He's very quick on the uptake and able to process and memorize a lot of information in a short amount of time. When he’s 'in the zone’, he can teach himself anything and absorbs knowledge like a sponge.
Tumblr media
33. What five objects or things could be expected to be found on your oc’s person at any time? Why?
For Erik:
His father’s necklace
His father’s sunglasses
A cigarette butt
A gun and/or an army knife
Lots of body hair
71. What is your oc’s go-to for offense? What weapon, what style of fighting? Or are words more their weapon of choice?
Erik’s weapon of choice will always be his fists. No risk of losing them. :D He’s generally good with firearms but he very much prefers hand-to-hand combat. That is, unless you count swearing as a weapon.
Tumblr media
50. How attentive is your oc? How perceptive are they? How easily do they get distracted?
Omar is preternaturally observant and focused. That is why he’s such an excellent bodyguard and part of why Al-Saud keeps him in that position.
Tumblr media
53. If your oc was to host a podcast or TV show, what would it be about? Would your oc actually be good at it? What sorts of guests would appear?
Omg, when I saw that question, I knew I had to answer it for Tim. He’d make a great podcast host! He’s naturally friendly and easily makes people to open up. And he’s genuinely interested in what they have to say. He’s got a huge number of contacts from all horizons, he’d have no problem finding guests. And he’s a social media addict: you may remember that his blog actually contributed to his band’s success? To this day, he’s still very much active on social media.
Tumblr media
72. What is your oc’s ideal environment like? Urban or natural? Fancy or rustic? What’s the weather like?
Ivy is a desert girl and has always had a hard time adapting to colder weather. Rainy days make her grumpy. Ideally, she would have loved to go back to Lucky Palms. She’s an urban girl, she enjoys the city bustle and the comfort of city life but... preferably in hot weather.
Tumblr media
77. Does your oc like to wear any particular accessories? Hats, jewelry, scarves, etc.?
Noah only wears relatively discreet black earrings, one on each ear. He’d got his ears pierced when he was a teen, and had a vague notion to get more, like a midline tongue piercing (he must have heard that it enhanced kissing and oral sex). A tattoo was also in the plans at some point (that was his romantic phase as it was a way to get Emily’s attention). But he simply didn’t have the money at the time, and then that whim passed. But he kept wearing the earrings, even after he started his professional life, because if it can annoy or unsettle people, he will do it.
Tumblr media
80. What is your oc’s handwriting like? How easy to read is it? Can they write/read cursive?
Tristan learned how to read and write at the beginning of the 15th century so of course, he’s a wee bit influenced by the medieval cursive. His handwriting is a slightly more modern version of the below:
Tumblr media
(for those interested, the above document is dated from 1457 and signed by Charles VII, King of France, the king Tristan first served under - it’s about the cancellation of a ruling for two ploughmen)

About my OCs game
thank youuu @hamburgerslippers for tagging me, as always I have a blast making u look at my guys and i know there's at least one other tag game u sent me that i havent done and yes i live in constant shame
Favorite OC: Julian Dae
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'd love to lie and say I don't have favorites but I do and it's. Well. Not my fault he's bitchy and damaged and disconnected and isolated and angry and (<- is my fault)
Newest OC: Diana Rojas?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I might change her last name BUT I have finally started to figure her out. As far as 'this character has probably existed' she's older than a few others like Sumaya or a couple unnamed ones, but she's actually got plotline so she counts more than them. Also she actually has a design (tho it's subject to change).
Oldest OC: Julian Dae
Of fucking course. He's changed a lot obvi but I first made him in like... 2018. He's old as fuck. Functionally he's more like 2 or 3 years old tho because that's when I solidified his actual story to (roughly) what it is now.
Meanest OC: ...Julian Dae
I'm sensing a theme. Listen I'm not just joking when I say he's a bitch he is kind of an asshole. People don't like him for good reason. He doesn't exactly work and play well with others. He's soooooo defensive that it circles around to being offensive. He
Softest OC: Milo Montalvo!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's done literally nothing wrong in his whole life but also if you say that you're missing the point and u dont get him like i do <3. Listen. He cares about people and he's easy to be around BUT he makes mistakes and sometimes in the effort of not hurting anybody he ends up doing more damage. But mostly he's sweet. My perfect fucked up guy.
Most standoffish/aloof OC: Brooke Ulriche
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She's soooooo disaffected she doesn't see the point of getting close to people anymore so she just doesn't. She moves through people's lives with little thought to them which means she doesnt really care about any of them?? Just in a personable manner?? But also she DOES care but only in the sense of how she is useful to them. She's really normal guys.
Dumbest OC: .... ...Julian Dae
I hesitate to call him dumb but compared to the others... yeah. He's too impulsive for his own good and he doesn't really think about consequences. He's never had a plan in his life. Everybody else is either really methodical (Liliana, Brooke, Reiji) or emotionally intelligent and good at problem solving (Milo, Diana) and Julian just... isn't. He's fuckin stupid but also look out? I guess?
Smartest OC: Liliana Hart!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that's why they go so well together! Lmao she's not perfect (FAR fucking from it) but she actually IS really good with a plan and is patient and brutal and you know that post that's like "ruthless just means seeing the clear line between here and there"? that's Liliana. She's detail-oriented and careful and while going off-book isn't exactly her strong suit she CAN make it work because she has good instincts. She's good at considering all the options and picking the best one.
Horniest OC: ..............Diana
LISTENNNNNNNNNN I. She. Ok???? If she wasn't so gay like 90% of her problems would go away but I. you. let her live
OC I'd bang: For legal purposes I cannot answer this
yeah i'm taking the coward's road with this one. u dont need to worry about it ASDFGHJKLKJHGFD
OC I'd be besties with IRL: Milo...
I said he's easy to get along with and I'm difficult so like..... Also Liliana tho because she's outgoing and trans and that's all it takes. Julian would just wanna fight and the other three are too quiet so we wouldn't speak to each other because you know I dont start conversations.
also i'm realizing now Reiji gets NOTHING. fuck him i guess (<- i lpve him)

Here is my recap of the How'd We Get Here? (w/ Robert J. Ulrich) episode of the podcast.
I am so sorry that I am continuously late on these episodes.
Robert Ulrich was the casting director for Glee and The Glee Project.
He was casting director for Battlestar Galactica and Dark Angel.
Glee was his biggest show.
Glee was a highlight for Robert.
He also worked on Nip/Tuck and Popular. So he had worked with Ryan Murphy before Glee.
It took him awhile to earn Ryan's trust.
He had no idea how Glee would happen because it was so crazy.
He knew Glee was special.
There was a screening party for the second episode.
Robert somehow would get the dailies and enjoyed being able to watch everything before it was cut.
Kevin said he bombed his initial audition. Robert said he didn't bomb it.
Ryan wanted real kids when they did the first auditions. He didn't want it to come off as fake.
Robert worked on a show called Rhapsody and each season was going to be about a different artist. The first season was about Elton John. It got the network test and they pulled the plug. This is where Robert figured out a system for doing auditions. He would have people come in and sing in his office.
After this he would go to the producers and have a pianist. He knew having accompaniment helped people. He used Brad Ellis as his pianist for Glee auditions.
People would be lined up and down the hallway doing a dance routine. Nobody danced in the initial auditions but after that the guest actors would have to audition.
Darren was cast off a tape.
Diana was the last to be cast of the original group.
When Naya auditioned they were in a rush. He told Naya to sing something before he took her in to sing for the producers.
Auditioning has changed a lot since Glee. It was a terrible system. Most network tests are hideous.
Robert is incredibly warm and welcoming. It made the casting experience a lot less scary for the cast.
Robert doesn't like taped auditions. He didn't know how you could do chemistry reads if you aren't in the room with the person.
He has changed his mind and thinks overall it is better.
There are positives and negatives to it.
The asked Robert about The Glee Project.
Casting directors rarely meet the cast.
There were always parties at the Chateau Marmont.
Ryan told he had something for Robert at one of these parties.
Robert didn't hear anything for weeks.
The Glee Project started on myspace.
They would watch audition tapes all day.
After all this work things were shelved for a while.
They saw 100,000 people between the two seasons.
Damian, Samuel, and Alex were all people they saw at 20th Century Fox for in office auditions.
They hired a reality company to set up the open calls.
Chicago people camped out in the snow. A pregnant woman had to be rushed to the hospital. It was crazy.
The first season they went to Chicago and Fort Worth.
The second season they went to Chicago, New York, and Nashville.
Between the open calls, online, and in office auditions that is how they came up with the cast for the two seasons.
They narrowed it down from 50,000 to 500. The pictures covered Robert's wall.
From 500 they narrowed it down to 80 and they were sent to a boot camp with Zach and Nikki. From there it was narrowed down to 30 who auditioned in front of Ryan.
Robert didn't know until the first day that he showed up that he would be on camera.
He was very nervous and a mess. It was probably better that he didn't know.
Darren was the first mentor and made Robert feel relaxed. Kevin said Darren is good at that.
They did five days shoots and Robert worked 4 of those days. Five days is a lot for a reality show.
Zach is the best and they are trying to get him on the show. He one of the unsung heroes of Glee. Brooke is also incredible.
Robert won an Emmy for Glee.
Robert got a lot of fan mail after glee aired.
They talked about the SAG awards. At one of them Robert got to sit between Jane and Cory.
The most difficult roles to cast were Finn and Mercedes.
Ryan wanted Finn to be a believable high school jock. They had so many auditions. Robert saw Cory's tape at like 2 am and knew he was special.
Ryan was looking for the right voice for Mercedes. They found an actress that could rap but she wasn't the right fit.
Amber didn't even have headshots when she auditioned for Glee. She sang something but it wasn't quite right.
Robert asked Amber to sing And I'm Telling You from Dream Girls. She said she had never done it. She sang it and Robert knew they had the right person when she sang it. He took her over to Ryan and they knew they had it.
Apparently Amber worked for Ryan when she was a little girl.
Glee was like lightening in a bottle. Ryan was always open and there was no one too outside the box.
Robert writes to Ryan every New Years Eve and thanks him for his career.
Well that's it for this week. I hope they have Zach on soon.
I added a link at the top of my tumblr page to make it easier to find all my recaps.

Ice-T's Body Count Gets First Book
Tumblr media
Ben Apatoff has written the first book about Ice-T's heavy metal band Body Count. The book is part of the Bloomsbury 33 1/3 series that has published several titles chronicling noteworthy albums from pop artists across genres. Ice-T introduced his all-Black hardcore band in 1991 on his O.G. Original Gangster album and they performed at the first ever Lollapalooza that summer. Their debut album included the incendiary "Cop Killer" which was criticized by President George H.W. Bush and Vice-President Dan Quayle. Police organizations called for the boycott of Time Warner and Ice-T had the song removed from the album because he felt that the outrage had overshadowed the music.
Apatoff tells the story of a bunch of high school friends who got together and reclaimed rock and roll to tell stories from a Black perspective that was rarely if ever presented in mainstream media. The author conducted interviews with Ice-T, Ernie C, Sean E. Sean, Vincent Price, Ill Will, Juan of the Dead, Jello Biafra, Bobby Brooks, Max Cavalera, Dan Charnas, Doc Coyle, Heidi Siegmund Cuda, Chuck D, Laina Dawes, Ron DeLord, Corey Glover, Dave Halili, David Harleston, Gibby Haynes, Gary Holt, Howie Klein, Chris “Hot Rod” Long, Matt Mahurin, Bernard Matthews, Duff McKagan, Bob Merlis, Angelo Moore, Darlene Ortiz, Phyllis Pollack, Will Putney, Vernon Reid, Henry Rollins, Troy Staton, Steve Stewart, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ulrich Wild, Juan Williams, Mark Zonder and more.  Body Count will be released on September 7, 2023.

Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea “The Cyborg”
Among the many things that fascinated little Buzzy boy, submarines ranked high on the list.
So it’s no surprise that I eagerly glommed onto Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea, Irwin Allen’s first TV series.
I was aware of Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea from the comic book based on the original movie long before I saw the feature film.
Trust me, the comic book is a lot better.
Arguably the best of Allen’s four TV series (Lost In Space, The Time Tunnel, and Land Of The Giants fill out the list), Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea nonetheless was a woefully uneven show, vacillating between reasonably well executed straight forward adventure and Allen’s particular / peculiar blend of sci-fi goofiness.
Most of the first season episodes (shot in black and white) were cold war thrillers ala Tom Clancy, though a few loopy sci-fi stories slipped through.*
The remaining seasons were shot in color, rapidly moving deeper and deeper into science fiction territory.  Even as an 11 year old I rapidly grew disappointed with the series but did appreciate the better episodes they produced.
For me at that early age, their best episode ever was “The Cyborg,” written by William Read Woodfield & Allan Balter, directed by Leo Penn, co-starring Victor Buono as Prof. Tabor Ulrich.
When the episode turned up on YouTube, I decided to rewatch it, curious if memory and nostalgia cast it in a rosy glow.
To my delight, no they didn’t.  “The Cyborg” stands up remarkably well.
Oh, it has a full measure of Allen TV flaws -- black limbo sets more suitable for an off-off-Broadway production as well as heavy reliance on stock footage and lots of it -- but Woodfield & Balter managed to use those in support of their story, not undermine it.  Granted, Buono is over the top as the villain (feh!  When did he ever turn in a performance that wasn’t over the top?), but he’s colorful and amusing as the megalomaniacal (but not mad; oh, no, he’s perfectly sane and rational) Prof. Ulrich, chewing the scant scenery and prop turkey legs with uproarious glee.
Best of all, he has a motive that more than one real world political or military leader has used to justify their crimes against humanity, and while his means are far-fetched, hey, the story is set in the far off future year of 1972 so maybe they would have working cyborgs by then.**
Ulrich’s scheme is to replace the Seaview’s Admiral Nelson (Richard Basehart) with a cyborg double who will mislead the super-sub’s crew into starting World War Three, which Ulrich plans to ride out in his bomb shelter with his cyborg retinue.
To accomplish this he lures Nelson to his lab in stock footage Switzerland where he downloads the admiral’s knowledge and personality into a cyborg double who then returns to the Seaview with a computer program that will trick the crew into thinking World War Three just broke out and they must launch their nuclear weapons.
There is a chilling scene where Captain Crane (David Hedison) and the faux Nelson talk via proto-Zoom to the admiral’s secretary back at the base, telling her to get to a bomb shelter, only for the audience to see the secretary is actually another cyborg double controlled by Ulrich.
Nelson, of course, finally figures out an ingenious way of warning his crew, the cyborg admiral is destroyed, and Ulrich and his lab blow up real good.  In order to achieve this, Nelson must persuade Ulrich’s assistant, Gundi (Brooke Bundy), to help him escape only to realize as the lab melts down that she, too, is a cyborg.
So let’s pause a moment and look at what Woodfield & Balter put on the table on October 17, 1965:
How do we determine what is / is not real, especially when it comes to us electronically?
Can we download knowledge from a human brain and store it electronically?
Can we create Artificial Intelligence that can pass for a real human being?
Can Artificial Intelligence develop a moral and ethical code all on its own?
These are topics of pressing interest today, but Woodfield & Balter articulated them fully almost 60 years ago.
And on an Irwin Allen TV show, to boot.
. . .
As much as I enjoyed “The Cyborg” there was something about it that gnawed at me, something I knew I’d seen elsewhere.
Not the cyborg double; that’s straight out of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis and has been used countless times since then in sci-fi movies / pulps / comic books.
No, there was another TV series with an episode where a villainous scientist replaces a ship’s commanding officer with a duplicate and the hero must figure out how to warn his crew about the imposter.
I’m talking “What Are Little Girls Made Of?” on Star Trek, written by Robert Bloch, directed by James Goldstone, broadcast almost a year to the day later on NBC-TV on Oct. 20, 1966.
This is not one of my favorite Star Trek episodes, despite Bloch having written it.  At first blush it seems close enough to “The Cyborg” for Bloch to have lifted the plot, but it also bears a strong resemblance to Shakespeare’s The Tempest right down to a Caliban-like creature (Ted Cassidy as Ruk) and a female android that serves as a combination Ariel / Miranda (Sherry Jackson as Andrea).
Which of course means it’s only a hop-skip-and-a-“Beam me down, Scotty” from Forbidden Planet, including a vast underground laboratory left by the original inhabitants of the planet.
“What Are Little Girls Made Of?” tries too hard and falls short as a result.
It strives to be Important and Say Important Things and present A Real Grown Up Drama but it lacks all the virtues that serve ”The Cyborg” so well.
Yeah, “The Cyborg” is a comic book story type of episode, but it’s a smart comic book story and the makers knew enough to embrace the absurdity and just plow ahead, letting the smart bits surprise and delight us.  Basehart and Hedison played their parts absolutely straight, but Buono displays such unparalleled exuberance as the misguided scientist that he generates enough audience goodwill to glide the story effortlessly along.
“The Cyborg” offers enough meat on its bones to support a feature length film, and it keeps things moving at a rapid pace without every losing sight of what the story is about.
And dammit, Woodfield & Balter simply wrote a much better script than Bloch did.  Nelson’s ingenious warning is to trigger hand twitches in his cyborg double that tap out a Morse code warning to Crane and the crew; Kirk’s solution is to think of anti-Vulcan racial slurs to imprint on his android double’s mind, alerting Spock by hurling insults at him.***
Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea wasn’t an exceptional TV show, but they did knock one out of the ballpark with “The Cyborg.”

  *  Harlan Ellison wrote “The Price Of Doom” for Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea under his Cordwainer Bird pseudonym, breaking an ABC-TV executive’s hip in the process, but that’s another story for another day.
**  Technically Ulrich’s creations are androids, not cyborgs, as they are wholly constructed via artificial means while cyborgs are cybernetic organisms, living beings augmented by hi-tech add-ons and plug-ins.
*** On the other hand, “What Are Little Girls Made Of?” does offer William Shatner lurking in ambush to assault Ted Cassidy with a stalacmite dildo, so there’s that…
