here’s an annotated playlist that goes along with Bloodied on Arrival, my novel! 

Here’s our main character, Nuisance, a holy assassin from Knife Church, before and after her domestication by a beautiful widowed MILF with a vow of silence, Hero.  summary below the cut!

Nuisance is the protagonist of Bloodied on Arrival, a short novel I wrote. She is a 26-year-old mess & road-weary assassin from The Church of Johnny Knives (god of justice & death) who finds herself and the cat she took from her most recent victim taking refuge at a companionship shrine run by a beautiful older widow, Hero, of the Church of the Listening Lady (god of life and sorrow). The two can't deny their immediate connection and aim for a rewarding inter-church one-night stand after some intimate wound tending. Things don’t go exactly as planned when circumstances force Nuisance into a couple of days of domesticity that she is unexpectedly attracted to after a life of being a lone wolf. Not only is that quarter-life crisis hitting her like a landslide, but she thinks she might like Hero, which makes her feel even worse about inflicting herself on her. When she finally breaks herself out of the spell she’s been under (a beautiful MILF cooking her breakfast), she realizes her cat is missing and she is bound to find it.

This is a sequel to my first Wasteland romance novella and was originally published, like that one, as a choose-your-own-adventure style story on Twitter in 2018-2019. I finally got it all cleaned up and assembled for your reading pleasure! You do NOT have to have read the first novella to understand and enjoy this!

So, we know Thomas Percy, Earl of Worcester was at Shrewsbury with the 16-year-old Hal (Prince Henry, the future Henry V etc.), whose guardian and governor he was. We know that some point before the 20th, Worcester slipped away from Shrewsbury to join with Henry "Hotspur" Percy in the lead up to his rebellion, bringing with him "a significant proportion of the garrison" and according to Walsingham, perhaps having stolen money and treasures from the Prince.

I sometimes wonder if Worcester had hoped to or tried to abduct Hal to serve as a hostage against Henry - or perhaps hoped to get him to defect to their side.

And can you imagine this poor 16-year-old kid discovering his guardian just abandoned him to join a rebellion against his father and the city's about to be under siege and his dad's nowhere in sight and a lot of the garrison's troops are gone? And he's in charge?

Here's a playlist from Hero's POV starting with her mourning Frances's death and going in through the events of Bloodied on Arrival. In the story, I've specified that Hero (who has a vow of silence but communicates through writing) is writing to Nuisance on a notepad with a cartoon frog on it, including when she's really laying into her. So, here is the cute stationery that has traumatized Nuisance.

From how often Mother Kosm frequented the waters by the fishing hamlet that would one day become her tomb, so too would kin and lesser great ones occasionally tread that stretch of sea. Often times though these lesser beings would strand themselves on the shoreline when the tide receded, their countless eyes fixed upon the Cosmos even as they perished.

So it was then that the villages dotting the coast took it often upon themselves to return such creatures to the sea, where even in death their unspeakable forms would no doubt be carried below and over round into the Cosmos. Such men and women, and likewise their children, were equally blessed and cursed with eyes on the inside, and even after the ruination of his village Sam still harbors that insight into the otherwise unknowable nature of the Old Ones.

Of late though, the ability to perceive on a higher plane has become more and more of a curse. With the School of Mensis tugging at the veil between the waking world and the dreams of sleepless gods, more and more have the lesser great ones begun to slip between the cracks... and Sam has made a point of no longer looking up lest he garner the attention of an amygdala.
