So-called Project Ghostbusters—echoing the iconic rival's logo—appears to have been just the beginning of the wider In App Action Panel (IAAP) program which aimed to spy on competitors' traffic to gain commercial advantage. It's thought to have run between June 2016 and approximately May 2019, with YouTube and Amazon being the next targets.
Meta, Facebook's parent company, employed its controversial VPN service as a way to intercept and decrypt the traffic between the people accessing its service and competitors' servers. The company shut down Onavo in 2019, following a TechCrunch investigation revealing the spyware-like VPN software was employed in a research project to collect sensitive user data from paid volunteers aged between 13 and 25.
"Facebook’s IAAP program conduct was not merely anticompetitive, but criminal," read the filings revealed on March 26, 2024, by a federal court in California during the class action lawsuit between consumers and Meta.

Social Media is like a dedicated stalker.
Like Joe Goldberg from Netflix's hit TV show You. Facebook, Instagram, Google, they all like to listen from afar; when you think you're having a private conversation they are simply there- lurking in the back corner of the room, waiting for you to say something that they could possibly sell to you.
Yes, it's creepy as hell.
And yet; we all still use it. Well, most of us.
Why is that?
We obviously know that all of these apps secretly spy on us when we're not paying attention, but we still can't help but want to see how so-and-so is doing from Texas by looking through our Facebook or Instagram feed.
We still search for some kind of extra validation whether we need it or not through these online platforms. But is it really that important?
It shouldn't be. That's the problem. And it is all addicting in a way; the amount of likes, shares, random funny-but-stupid short videos that distract us from our own thoughts. It makes us feel good, and yet it is still the weirdest thing in my opinion.
I grew up with the new-found birth of all social media platforms. Facebook was the newest and coolest thing at the time and I remember feeling invincible almost. Being able to connect with people and friends that happened to be miles away- right at your fingertips. When I was younger I would constantly pester my friends online because I was bored, and like I said- it was still relatively "new" so why not use the hell out of it and be cool like all of the other kids right?
Anyways, what I didn't realize at the time was how much it affected my self-esteem as a still-awkward-and-growing adolescent. Instagram was the next big thing when I was around 14 or 15 years old- along with the legendary Snapchat. This was a time period where I happened to be going through a lot of self-confidence issues. I had a decent amount of acne that no amount of makeup could hide, but the one thing that could make it disappear was by using Snapchat and Instagram filters. I would have to say that this did more harm than good because I would notice the little things Snapchat would change about my face. Whenever I would apply a "pretty" filter on, my eyes would expand a couple of inches, my chin would shrink significantly- along with my nose, and my acne was almost non-existent; sounds great right?
It really was great, until you happened to turn the filter off. I would watch in horror as all of the physical qualities that I hated about myself suddenly return. My acne looked worse than I originally had thought, and my nose looked bigger than I had imagined. Snapchat basically ruined my self-image when I was growing up, and now- in my 20's I'm still struggling to get my self-confidence back.
How is it normal to live in a world where you can look "perfect" in a matter of seconds through only using a camera lens on a screen? It's anything but normal.
And yet- I can't help but wonder if I'm a total dumbass for continuing to use the very exact social media platforms that has damaged my self-confidence for years, or if I'm simply keeping up with the "norm" of today's society's expectations?
Maybe I'm both.
Maybe we're all victims to this, in some way or another.
But also, what else is there to do?

“I heard there was a bit of a scene earlier today,” Dave said, lying on his bed as he scrolled through his phone. Angie looked up from her own phone.
“Oh, yeah, this guy at the visitor center,” she said. “This dude showed up and started yelling at Easton. Some shit about facebook conspiracies and Easton being a spy and-honestly, I wasn’t really following his line of thinking.”
“Shit,” Dave said. “How’d Easton take it?”
Angie spent a brief moment wondering what Dave’s motivation for the question might be - maybe concern over how Easton might react? He still seemed jumpy around the giant. Then again, he had invited him stargazing the other night. And then barely spoken to him since. The guy at the visitor center thought process wasn’t the only one Angie was having trouble following. “I mean, I don’t think he really cared about the conspiracy stuff. And John had us take a break anyways. He was kind of hurt by the stuff the guy was yelling at the end, though. He told some kid Easton would ‘kill him and his parents’. Among other things.”
“Ouch,” Dave said. “That’s harsh.”
“Yeah,” Angie said, wincing at the memory. She glanced down at a snapchat notification on her phone. “Oh, Penelope says hi.”
“Tell her I said hi back,” Dave replied. She responded by taking a blurry photo of him to send back to her friend.
“Do you think Easton has snapchat?” Dave asked after a moment.
“Um, I dunno.” Angie raised an eyebrow, considering the question. “I guess he has a phone. Not really sure about the compatibility of human-aphirial operating systems and apps. You could ask him?”
Dave shook his head quickly. “I was just wondering.”
“Okay,” Angie said.
“Is Penelope still coming to visit soon?” Dave asked.
“Uh, yeah. Next week,” Angie replied.
“That’ll be cool. She seems chill,” Dave said.
“Yeah. We were planning a camping trip, if you wanted to join us,” Angie said. The conversation moved on from there, and eventually, Angie felt herself growing tired as the evening drew on. Slightly before ten, she finally excused herself to her own room. As she got ready for bed, she glanced out the window. The lights of Easton’s house were just visible from it - the fact that they’d managed to mostly camouflage such an imposing building remained an impressive feat in her mind. Other than that, the desert was all dark and still. Until she saw a set of headlights appear in the distance, drawing steadily closer.
Bit late to be arriving, she mused. It was most likely some well intentioned, but inexperienced family who was learning first hand how long the drive from any of the major cities was. Turning away from the window, Angie went to hop into the shower.

Americans don’t have any privacy from our government. All of this is so dumb. If they wanna ban Tik Tok then they minus well ban Facebook( cause who the hell even goes on there?? I haven’t been on there for so long), Snapchat, Instagram, YouTube, Tumblr and all the other social media apps that children visit on a daily basis. Hell, let’s just get rid of the whole damn internet since our caring government is so worried and concerned about these kids.
These kids shouldn’t be on these social media sites anyway. Their parents are not doing their jobs. It is not anyone’s responsibility to make sure their kids are not doing or seeing anything inappropriate online. Tik Tok is not the problem.

The drumbeat against TikTok grows louder by the day. More than a dozen U.S. states including Georgia, Texas, Maryland, Virginia, and both Dakotas have already banned the popular social media app—best known for short videos and viral dances—from being used on state government devices. A similar ban for federal government devices is part of the omnibus spending bill that passed Congress on Friday, and bipartisan legislation introduced earlier this month calls for TikTok to be banned in the United States completely.
Further warnings about the app have come from Brendan Carr, a commissioner on the Federal Communications Commission, and several members of the intelligence community, including the directors of the FBI and CIA.
The debate centers on TikTok’s ownership by Chinese tech giant ByteDance and the degree to which the government in Beijing has access to and influence over the data it collects on its users. Critics of TikTok argue that the app could be used to spy on Americans, influence public opinion, and expose them to Chinese propaganda.
TikTok’s algorithm, which serves its users videos better suited to their interests and has driven the app’s popularity, collects data on users’ likes and dislikes based on viewing patterns. It also has data on the devices being used to view its videos, with recent research showing it can potentially access details such as location, contacts, and calendars. While some of the data TikTok collects is no different from other platforms that rely on ad tracking, such as Google and Facebook, TikTok’s ownership heightens the risk that China’s authoritarian government could compel it to share data with Beijing on users from other countries. (TikTok, for its part, has said it does not share data with the Chinese government and would not do so if asked.)
In any event, targets abound: An estimated 100 million Americans, particularly younger Americans, use the app, with a survey earlier this year by Pew Research placing it second in popularity to YouTube among U.S. teenagers, ahead of Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and Facebook.
The concerns aren’t new. Then-President Donald Trump went after TikTok aggressively on similar national security grounds, nearly forcing a ban from U.S. app stores before he lost his reelection bid in 2020 to President Joe Biden. After Biden took office, he dropped the ban in favor of continuing a national security review of TikTok’s technology by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), which is yet to conclude.
“We have been working with CFIUS, led by the Treasury Department, for over two years to address all reasonable national security concerns about TikTok in the U.S.,” TikTok spokesperson Brooke Oberwetter said in a statement to Foreign Policy, adding that CFIUS is reviewing a “comprehensive solution” that covers data security, corporate governance, and content moderation. “We have made substantial progress on implementing that solution over the past year, and look forward to completing that work to put these concerns to rest,” she said.
In the meantime, TikTok has only grown in influence and popularity. Several companies, celebrities, news outlets, and even politicians (including Biden himself) have used its enormous influence among younger Americans to increase the reach of their messaging.
“I think the Biden administration’s worried. … There’s just too many users,” said Nazak Nikakhtar, who served as the Department of Commerce’s lead on CFIUS in the Trump administration and was involved in its efforts to ban the app. “The teenagers are going to pretty much revolt” if it’s banned across the board, she said.
But after a prolonged lull, the conversation around TikTok has collided with a growing bipartisan hawkishness on China—particularly around technology—and the pressure to do something is increasingly difficult to withstand. The legislation could not only end up banning one of the world’s biggest tech platforms in one of its most lucrative markets but also deepen a rapidly growing schism between Washington and Beijing on technology. The fact that TikTok’s U.S. user base accounts for roughly one-third of the population would make an outright ban something of a political tightrope. As past U.S. moves against Chinese technology such as 5G and semiconductors have shown, the effect on TikTok’s business, if allies decided to follow suit, could be immense. TikTok has more than a billion users worldwide.
TikTok hasn’t done much to help its cause. While the company has made efforts to shore up its protection of U.S. user data, including a commitment to route all the data through servers run by U.S. tech firm Oracle, it has also admitted that the data can be accessed by employees in China. A bigger breach came to light this week, when ByteDance revealed it had fired four employees—two each in the United States and China—for using TikTok data to surveil journalists who were covering the company.
“The misconduct of certain individuals, who are no longer employed at ByteDance, was an egregious misuse of their authority to obtain access to user data,” Oberwetter said. “This misbehavior is unacceptable, and not in line with our efforts across TikTok to earn the trust of our users.”
TikTok’s sympathizers in Washington, however, are dwindling in number.
“This has been brought on by TikTok, not by the U.S. government,” said Junaid Islam, a cybersecurity and secure communications expert and partner at security advisory firm OODA. While TikTok insists that it is not beholden to the Chinese government, the fact that the company has still not made more of an effort to completely wall off its data from China raises the question of its “ulterior motives,” Islam said.
There are other experts, however, who say the campaign against TikTok is motivated more by political considerations than security ones, arguing that the social media app is no different than U.S. counterparts such as Facebook or Snapchat in simply trying to make money through advertising.
“I think what people don’t seem to understand is that TikTok is not an organ of the Communist Party, and it is a fallacy to continually repeat the fact that any Chinese company is, in fact, indistinguishable from the state and has no purpose other than to advance the political and military objectives of the Chinese government when it’s obviously a commercial company,” said Milton Mueller, a professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology’s School of Public Policy. “It’s interested in selling advertising and needs to be looked at in that way.”
Mueller advocates a more measured approach, such as using existing U.S. privacy laws and ensuring TikTok is in compliance with them. “It is a personal privacy issue, not a national security issue,” he said. TikTok has employed a similar approach in its criticism of the calls for a ban.
“We’re disappointed that Congress has moved to ban TikTok on government devices—a political gesture that will do nothing to advance national security interests—rather than encouraging the administration to conclude its national security review,” Oberwetter said, also criticizing the state governments that have individually banned TikTok as “jumping on the political bandwagon … based on unfounded falsehoods.”
With more China hawks circling by the day, however, it remains to be seen how long the Biden administration can slow-walk its response—and whether the platform’s days in the United States are genuinely numbered.
“I don’t know why it hasn’t happened yet,” Islam said, referring to the security agreement between TikTok and the U.S. government. “But too much time has passed.”

However I intend to summarize the most significant parts if you'll bear with me a moment.
First off, this bill will ban the use of hardware such as modems, routers, home cameras, etc, and virtual tech such as VPNs, if they are manufactured by or used to contact and deal with "foreign adversaries."
Note that, while a summative list of "foreign adversaries" is given in the bill, it is subject to change at any time without warning.
This bill will make the use of VPNs to bypass bans on apps/content such as TikTok a criminal act, punishable by minimum imprisonment of 20 years and a minimum fine of $250,000 or $1,000,000 depending on if you knowingly did so for the explicit purpose of accessing banned content
The bill gives the federal government the power to access and monitor any activity from suspected devices, virtual or otherwise, without telling anyone. This essentially gives them the power to spy on you without your knowledge or consent, monitoring you at all times.
This includes routers, modems, online videogames, streaming apps, social media, ring cameras and other home camera systems, smart thermostats, literally anything that makes use of the internet
The method by which this will be done is by the President appointing a Secretary of Communication, who forms their own independent group without any votes or democratic selection, and that group can then make decisions behind closed doors without disclosing anything whatsoever
Decisions banning whatever they deem to be inappropriate or threatening content, or otherwise deemed a threat to national security. At any time. Without disclosure or voter input. And remember, accessing said content would be a crime under this bill.
If this passes, they can go through your text messages, your emails, your Snapchat, your Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and private messages on any other social media, anything that uses the internet, and they can censor it and prosecute anyone who disobeys these restrictions
In summation, this bill effectively bans anything at all the government deems inappropriate for whatever reason, very fast, without warning, and without voter input, and further allows the government to spy on you directly through anything that makes use of the internet, 24/7.
It is, without exaggeration, one of the most horrid and genuine threats to freedom of speech, freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, and the overall rights and freedoms of Americans everywhere. Especially the right to privacy.
Everyone should be thoroughly invested in shooting this bill down, as it could result in the breaking up of mass communication methods, the targeted suppression of minority groups, the immediate quashing of dissent in any form wherever it may be, and a true totalitarian state.
It is the biggest step towards the worst case scenario. Please, if you have the time, contact your representatives, make it clear you do NOT support this bill, and that if they vote for it you will support their opponents in the next primary. Call them, email them, whatever works
And spread this information around, in whatever way you see fit. It is imperative that that bill does not get passed, and I'm sure we can all see why. Yet I haven't seen anyone talking about it as of yet, despite how extremely concerning it is.
