The Gift She Wants
Masterlist
Warnings: None this is just pure fluff.
Relationships: Nalu
Summary: Natsu attempts to write Lucy a love letter for her birthday.
-------------
Lucy’s never really enjoyed her birthday. It used to be fun when her mom was still around. But after her death, her birthday had always been ignored by her father. But that all changed once she joined Fairy Tail. Every morning on July 1st she’d walk into the guild to find a huge party set up for her. It was a sweet gesture even though the guild hall usually wound up trashed by the end of the day because of all the drinking and fighting that ensued.
But that wasn’t the only thing that was the same every year. The presents that Lucy got from her friends were all the same. Gray would make her a little ice sculpture of a star that would melt after a day but she never had the heart to tell him. Gajeel did something similar with jewelry but it was made out of iron and really big and bulky so they were all too heavy to wear for long. Similarly, Erza would give her a sword or some other weapon that was too heavy for Lucy to lift. Juvia would offer her baked goods she made herself but for awhile Lucy was always cautious to eat them, knowing how jealous Juvia was about her friendship with Gray. Thankfully that wasn’t a problem anymore, and now her gift was one she was looking forward to along with the book from Levy and perfume from Mira that she got every year. There was only one gift she truly dreaded and that was from Natsu.
Every year she hoped that he would give her something different, only to be proven wrong when he whisks her away on some dangerous job that leaves her exhausted, dirty, and bruised. The only good part about it was that she got to spend time with him, and have a little fun when she wasn’t fearing for her life. And as the years went on, she hoped that perhaps him taking her on these jobs alone meant that he would talk to her about things. Things that she knew he probably never thought about but that deep down, she dares to hope that he does.
So she thought she knew what to expect during her birthday party this year when he approached her, holding something behind his back. She took a deep breath, ready to see what job flyer he’d present her with only to find a book with a pink bow wrapped around it instead.
“What’s this?” Lucy asks, surprised and cautiously optimistic. “Is it part of a job or-”
“No it’s not a job. It’s just a journal.” Natsu says. “I couldn’t figure out what to get you for your birthday this year so I asked Gildarts for advice and he told me I should get you something that you’ve been wanting to get or something you’d like so I thought I’d get you both!”
Lucy was confused and touched at the same time. She was also relieved that for once she wouldn’t have to worry about getting hurt on her birthday! And it was a really sweet and thoughtful gift! She likes to write so he got her a journal...He really thought about it to get her something she’d enjoy! Is he starting to change?
“Thank you so much Natsu!” Lucy exclaims, beaming with happiness as she holds the gift to her heart. “I love it!”
She had no idea just how much she’d love it later.
--------------
After the party, she brought all the gifts she was able to carry back to her apartment with her and immediately unwrapped the bow on the journal to open it.
To her surprise, there was already writing in it. Natsu’s writing.
Her heart sunk. The last time he had written her something was a note telling her he was leaving for a year with Happy. And then the guild disbanded and she was all alone. He wasn’t leaving her again was he?
With her heart pounding, she scanned the page, reading the words and bracing herself for heartbreak. But instead she found the opposite.
Dear Lucy,
I hate writing and I’ve never written something like this before so I don’t know how good it’s gonna be but this is something I know you want to hear so I’m gonna try my best for you like I always do. I’m not good with words. Most of the things I say to you make you upset with me so I try to show how I feel about you with my actions instead of my words. And while I think that’s given you enough of an idea to know that I care about you, I don’t think you get how much I really do. So I guess I’ve got to be more clear and I figured since you love writing this is the best way to do it.
You’re amazing. You’re so powerful, beautiful, and kind and you shine brighter than any star or dragon’s fire. I have no idea why you still hang around an idiot like me who doesn’t know how to treat you right but I hope the reason is because you feel the same way about me that I do about you. I’ve never had feelings like this before, so I’m sorry if I’ve frustrated you but I just don’t know anything about love aside from how I feel about you. Gramps and Gildarts used to lecture me on how great relationships are and how they hoped I’d fall in love and get married and have kids someday but I never wanted that because there wasn’t anyone I wanted to do that stuff with until you came into my life.
It took me awhile to figure it out but now everything they told me about makes sense. I want to be with you Lucy, as more than just a friend. I know I don’t deserve you but I’m working hard to make you happy because that’s what you deserve. And I can tell that not knowing that has made you unhappy. So I’ve got to just be straight to the point and say it. I love you Lucy Heartfilia. I think that’s what you want to hear, so that’s what I’m giving you for your birthday.
~Natsu
Lucy’s tears of joy were dripping onto the page so she quickly closes the book to keep her tears from washing away those sweet words.
This was better than she could have ever imagined. And all she wanted was to run to Natsu and start this new chapter in their relationship together. Thankfully, knowing him, she didn’t have to go far.
With tears dripping down her cheeks, she pulls back the curtain to her bedroom to find the man she loves and his blue cat in her room. She’d never been so happy to have them break into her apartment.
“Lucy did you like the-Aw damnit, you’re crying!” Natsu exclaims, looking hurt and disappointed with himself. “I messed up again!”
“What did you expect, you took relationship advice from Gildarts!” Happy chastises. “That guy can’t hold onto a woman, what does he know-”
“No you didn’t!” Lucy reassures him. “Natsu it was perfect! I love it! I love you too!” She exclaims.
Before Natsu has a chance to process what she said, Lucy dashes across the room, tossing the journal onto her bed before throwing her arms around his neck as he catches her in his before she kisses him.
Happy’s jaw drops and Natsu’s eyes go wide for a moment, surprised by her affection before he returns the kiss, closes his eyes and moves his hands along her back to hold her closer to him as he relishes in this new feeling.
She brings her hands up to his face to run her thumbs along his cheekbones while his hands settle on her hips as they gently pull apart.
A blush forms on Lucy’s face as she realizes what exactly she’s done and is immediately embarrassed by how forward she was being.
“Oh my gosh I’m so sorry that probably came out of nowhere and I should have asked first-” Lucy rambles before Natsu’s chuckle pulls her gaze back to his face and when he sees the warm look in his eyes and the smirk on his lips, she instantly relaxes.
“It’s fine Lucy. I was hoping you’d kiss me. I just hope it was a good kiss, considering I’ve never done that before...” Natsu admits shyly.
“It’s okay. I’ve never kissed anyone before either.” Lucy tells him. “This is new for me too. We’ll figure it out together, just like we do for everything else.”
She rests her head on his chest and Natsu holds her close and rests his cheek on top of her head.
“Well you know a lot more about this stuff than I do. So you’ll have a lot to teach me.” Natsu admits and Lucy laughs.
“Well you gave me a very thoughtful gift, so clearly you’ve already got some idea of what to do.” Lucy says.
“You just mean so much to me.” Natsu says. “I’ve never felt this way before for anyone else and I doubt I ever will. You deserve someone who can make you happy and give you everything you want.”
“Well if everything you wrote in that letter is true, then I have no doubt that person is you.” Lucy says. “I just want one more thing.”
“What is it?” Natsu asks, pulling back to look at her. “Whatever it is I’ll give it to you.”
“Just tell me you love me. I know you wrote it but I want to hear you say it.” Lucy requests.
Natsu smiles, more than happy to fulfill that wish.
“I love you Lucy.” Natsu says and fresh tears spring from Lucy’s eyes as a result.
“I love you too Natsu.” She says before kissing him again.
The sounds of Happy sniffling pull them out of the moment.
“What’s wrong little buddy? Are you crying because you’re happy for us?” Natsu asks.
“I’m so happy for both of you!” Happy sniffles. “But I can’t believe that someone as dense as you managed to get a girlfriend before me!” He wails and the new couple laughs.
Yep. Definitely the best birthday ever. And now Lucy couldn’t wait to see what Natsu would do for her next year.

【未定事件簿】 Tears of Themis: “Romantic Rail Getaway” Zuo Ran Route, Day 2
Tumblr media
Translation Masterlist | Themis Event Masterlist
Zuo Ran Route: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 | Day 5
Videos, where applicable, are hyperlinked on the headings in the post.
See under cut!
Part 1 – Dilly Street Area – “The Charm of Dilly Plaza”
Tumblr media
Dilly Plaza
On the second day, with the train’s advance, we arrived at the Dilly Plaza stop.
If Rumba City were called a picture scroll of literature and art, then Dilly Plaza was an elegant city that had both an artistic feeling and the flavour of life.
Here, you could clearly feel the enthusiasm of the locals.
Such as now – a travel guide warmly received us not long after we’d gotten off the train station platform.
Travel Guide: I’m very happy to meet you, visitors from afar.
Travel Guide: Is there anything you need me to help you with?
MC: Hm…
Tumblr media
INTERROGATION START
Tumblr media
Recommended Attractions
MC: Could you recommend some popular attractions for us?
Travel Guide: There are lots of popular attractions in Dilly Plaza, although the most popular with visitors is the Dilly Art Gallery and the Movie Wax Museum.
Tumblr media
Dilly Art Gallery
MC: I believe that it said online that the art gallery is holding a special exhibition on Impressionist painters?
Travel Guide: Yes. If you two are interested, you can check out the gallery.
Travel Guide: The exhibition this time has brought together the famous works of over ten Impressionist painters, as well as specially allowing visitors to take photos…
Travel Guide: You can take pictures of your favourite works to your heart’s content.
MC: (Whoa, then I’ll be able to take lots of precious photos!)
MC: Lawyer Zuo, let’s go to the art gallery in a bit.
Zuo Ran: Mhmm, I was just planning to go see it with you too.
Tumblr media
Movie Wax Museum
MC: How do you get to the movie wax museum?
Travel Guide: You can board the trip bus to the Promenade of Light and Shadow on the west side of the plaza to get to the entrance of the movie wax museum.
Travel Guide: The wax museum uses exquisite sculptures and reconstructed many classical movie scenes. It’s the attraction that visitors like seeing the most.
Travel Guide: If you two enjoy movies, you definitely can’t miss out.
MC: (Of course we like them! The wax museum is in the guide that Zuo Ran made before – I’m sure he must really want to go.)
Zuo Ran: MC, how about we…
MC: How about we go to the wax museum!
Zuo Ran and I basically spoke at the same time with our invitations… at the same time as when we spoke, Zuo Ran’s lips curved in a smile.
Zuo Ran: Sure, let’s go together.
Tumblr media
Recommended Delicacies
MC: Could you recommend a few characteristic delicacies for us?
Travel Guide: On Dilly Plaza’s food lists, the highest-ranked dishes are mussel shrimp soup and red wine beef tongue.
Tumblr media
Mussel Shrimp Soup
MC: I’m kind of curious about what mussel shrimp soup tastes like.
Tour Guide: This soup dish is very well-known in Dilly Plaza. Many types of vegetables are stewed in the soup, which contrast with the fresh sweetness of the mussels and long-tailed shrimp.
Tour Guide: I guarantee that when you first taste it, you’ll be able to experience the complex taste of mussel shrimp soup.
MC: (Just listening to it makes me feel like it’s a dish with a complicated process behind it! Its taste will probably be good, right?)
Zuo Ran: When we eat later, we can try a serving.
MC: Mhmm! I was thinking this too.
Tumblr media
Red Wine Beef Tongue
MC: Red wine beef tongue sounds very delicious.
Tour Guide: This is a traditional dish in Rumbaliya, and you must try it.
Tour Guide: The chefs use a low-temperature slow cooking method to ensure the soft, springy feeling of the beef tongue…
Tour Guide: The pairing with specially-prepared red wine sauce makes the beef tongue freshly sweet and delicious. Visitors who eat this dish all praise it to high heavens.
MC: (I’m already hungry just from listening to this! I’m going to add this dish to the food checklist!)
Tumblr media
INTERROGATION END
Tour Guide: Are there any other questions you have?
MC: None left, thank you.
Tour Guide: Then, I hope you two have fun!
Part 2 – Dilly Art Gallery
[Gameplay]
Part 3 – Dilly Commerce Street
[Gameplay]
Part 4 – Movie Wax Museum – “Mishap at the Wax Museum”
After checking out the Dilly Art Gallery, as well as tasting the fresh, sweet mussel shrimp and the delicious red wine beef tongue…
The next trip target was the movie wax museum that we were really looking forward to.
MC: (I wonder if there will be the movie scenes that Zuo Ran and I like in here…)
Right when we walked into the ticket booth, what greeted us weren’t enthusiastic staff members – instead, it was the sound of shouting.
Visitor: Did you get it wrong? Why should I pay an additional fee?
Staff: Dear lady, these are our rules.
Visitor: You’re taking money at random and trapping visitors with this!
MC: Eh? This is…
Visitor: Young lady, you came at the perfect time. Come judge what’s right!
Tumblr media
INTERROGATION START
Tumblr media
Course of Events
MC: Ah, don’t rush, could you tell me what happened first?
Visitor: I bought a special combo trip ticket online to come to Rumbaliya!
Visitor: The combo ticket included over entry tickets for over ten popular attractions, and it also said that we could use it whenever we wished.
MC: (Hm… sounds pretty worth it.)
Visitor: Who would’ve known that when I took out the combo ticket… the people here would have me pay more money!
Visitor: They even said that it couldn’t be used on its own, and I had to pay an additional service charge. It really pisses me off!
Tumblr media
Ticket Price
MC: On the combo ticket, did they indicate information related to additional services charges?
Visitor: They didn’t! I’m willing to swear that this definitely wasn’t there.
Visitor: I flipped the combo ticket back and forth several times. There wasn’t any requirement about additional service charges.
Visitor: The people here must be tricking me.
Tumblr media
What the Proprietor said
MC: Then… what did the proprietor say? Why are they collecting additional charges?
Visitor: Hmph, he said that the combo ticket only includes the basic entrance ticket price…
Visitor: I have to pay the remaining handling and service fees to go inside!
Tumblr media
INTERROGATION END
Visitor: I’m so pissed off. What kind of random, crappy wax museum is this! I’m not going in anymore. Refund me!
Staff: My apologies, lady. Our tickets are non-refundable.
MC: (Can’t be refunded? This is a little ridiculous!)
Zuo Ran: If this lady does not intend to continue visiting, then it is reasonable to refund her entrance ticket.
Visitor: Exactly, what kind of logic is this forceful money collection?!
Staff: Our tickets are non-refundable! It was said that it’s non-refundable, so it’s non-refundable!
[Gameplay]
Staff: Whatever! I can’t beat you all, so I’ll just refund the ticket money now.
Staff: Hurry off now. Our wax museum doesn’t welcome troublesome patrons like you!
--
Visitor: Thank you. If you two didn’t help, I think that I would have had to argue with him for a lot longer.
MC: No need for thanks, we’re just doing what we should.
MC: Plus, we’re also visitors, and we should help each other.
Visitor: Ugh… Rumbaliya’s sceneries are quite good. It’s just that there are way too many black-hearted store proprietors – so frustrating!
The visitor caught the chance again to spew some bitter complaints.
After we managed to soothe her emotions, Zuo Ran and I no longer were in the mood to continue touring around.
After hastily taking a few scenic pictures, we ended the day’s itinerary in advance.
Part 5 – Street Performance Plaza
[Gameplay]
 Part 6 – A Gentle Street Performance
Tumblr media
Dilly Street Area
Tumblr media
MC: That staff member was way too unreasonable.
After putting several roads’ worth of distance between us and the wax museum, I was still brooding over what had happened earlier.
I originally thought that I could experience the charm of classic movie scenes with Zuo Ran in the wax museum…
But instead… putting aside how we had been shut outside the order, the staff member even fiercely called us “meddling tourists”.
Zuo Ran: We just told the local police about the situation…
Zuo Ran: We can leave the rest for the related people to deal with it. Don’t let this matter affect you.
MC: Mhmm, I shouldn’t let people like this affect my good mood!
Zuo Ran reached out and straightened out the hairs in front of my forehead, a slight smile in his expression.
Tumblr media
Zuo Ran: Right, do you want to see the night street concert at Dilly Plaza?
MC: Eh? Don’t we… not have enough time to make it…
When we heard the travel guide introduce us to the grand concert event during the day, I did want to go.
It was just how we definitely wouldn’t have time considering our itinerary, so my curious thoughts could only be a temporary flash.
Zuo Ran: Since we didn’t go to the wax museum… altogether, we’ve got around an extra hour of time.
Zuo Ran: If we go to the music event location now, the timing should be just right.
Zuo Ran’s voice, accompanied by the cool night wind, blew slowly into my ears and aroused the curiosity in my heart.
MC: Lawyer Zuo, I want to go!
Zuo Ran: Okay, I’ll call over a car.
--
“My beautiful lover, please look at me.”
“Please don’t let go, become music notes, and follow the galaxy of time to find me.”
MC: It sounds so beautiful.
The melodious singing voices of the singers onstage was like flowing river water under the stars of a spring night, lingering with a tranquil feeling.
Tumblr media
Zuo Ran: This song is called “Galaxy Nocturne”. It’s a popular song that’s an adaptation of a local Rumbaliya folk song.
There was no host for the street concert, and the singers were all improvising their music and interacting with the audience sitting around them.
Zuo Ran thus explained things for me, becoming a quiet guide on my side.
MC: I thought that the songs selected for open-air concert would mainly be fast ones. I didn’t think that they’d mostly sing lyrical ballads.
Zuo Ran: The theme of this performance is “Starry Skies and Romance”, and the selected songs are mostly local Rumbaliya folk songs.
Zu Ran: The locals revere the beauty of nature, and when they sing, they don’t like using accompaniment – instead, they’re more prone to sing acapella.
MC: Hm… an improv performance like this must require higher skill and better intonation.
MC: The singers onstage never go out of tune – they’re basically walking juke boxes.
We chatted quietly, the beautiful singing blowing away all the troubles in my heart like a refreshing, gentle wind.
I was still immersed in the singing by the end of the performance, and I’d already forgotten all the troubles we’d encountered during the day.
Zuo Ran: Are you feeling better now?
MC: It got better early on! After listening to such an excellent concert, I’m feeling particularly great right now.
Zuo Ran: That’s good… I want you to enjoy a perfect vacation.
Zuo Ran: So I don’t want what happened during the day to affect your mood and become a regret.
Tumblr media
>I don’t think there’s anything regrettable >I still feel a little bit of regret
MC: I don’t feel like there’s anything regrettable at all. On the contrary… I feel pretty lucky.
MC: If we didn’t miss the wax museum exhibition, we might not have been able to see such an amazing concert.
MC: Is this called a “blessing in disguise”? Oh wait, no, this is called “when sorrow becomes joy”!
Zuo Ran: Oh you…
Zuo Ran laughed in amusement at my words, his heroic eyebrows raising gently, so that those eyes revealed even more emotion than usual.
Zuo Ran: If you say so, then to me, what happened today… probably counts as “Heaven accords to human wishes”.
MC: Huh, why?
Zuo Ran: Whether it’s an exhibition or a concert, what’s most important to me is… doing these things with you.
Zuo Ran: Now, my wish has already come true. Isn’t this a sort of “wish fulfillment”?
I didn’t think Zuo Ran knew to chitchat like this, far from the stressful work environment…
Between the vast sky and earth, he seemed to unintentionally reveal more, truer sides to himself to me.
MC: Yeah, that does seem to be right.
  >I don’t think there’s anything regrettable >I still feel a little bit of regret
MC: I still feel a tiny bit of regret.
Zuo Ran: …
MC: Lawyer Zuo, you’ve always liked movies a lot. Now that we weren’t able to see the wax museum, I feel regretful for you…
Zuo Ran: I don’t feel regretful.
Zuo Ran: Rather than going to see the contents of the wax exhibition alone, I like enjoying the process of the exhibition with you more.
Zuo Ran: And to me, this process is already excellent.
Zuo Ran: So I don’t regret it. I even feel… very satisfied.
Zuo Ran looked at me, smiling. I could read the gentleness on his face, and I could feel the sincerity in his words.
Influenced by his words, the last bit of regret in my heart was mended over.
MC: I’m also very satisfied.
--
Zuo Ran: It’s getting late, and we should be getting back.
Zuo Ran: We’ll be visiting Kelosi City tomorrow, so rest well tonight.
Kelosi City was a famous capital of cuisine. Several hundred types of local snacks and characteristic delicacies had attracted countless tourists there.
MC: My cuisine checklist can no longer restrain itself!
Zuo Ran: I looked up several decent local specialty restaurants. After we arrive at the stop tomorrow, we can tour around, then taste the foods.
MC: Mhmm, the ones selected by you are guaranteed to be great!
We chatted as we walked the way back.
Under the moonlight, the road ahead extended without limit, turning our journey towards an unknown but anticipatory direction.

warnings: cursing most likely because ~that’s me~ also there’s a mini anxiety attack (i don’t even know if it’s classified as that) so if that’s a trigger i don’t suggest reading this!
a/n: this is the longest fic i’ve writtten in one go and i also don’t have any beta readers or edit it closely, so i apologize for any errors i may have made. if you’re sick of soulmate aus, then this one may not be for you, but i tried to put a fresh spin on it instead of the run-of-the-mill names on their wrists/matching tattoos and whatnot.
music recs: please please please listen to the pride and prejudice soundtrack along with this! it pairs very well, especially with the songs living sculptures of pemberley, dawn, liz on top of the world, and leaving netherfield. so so so good. trust me on this one

Thursday morning. It was raining....again. Y/N was getting rather sick of the constant downpour that began the day earlier. She’d exhausted the use of drying spells and eventually stopped doing them--after all, there was no point in going through the trouble if she had to take the trek through the rain in just another hour.
Y/N was reminding her friends, Hermione, Harry, and Ron, of her plight as they walked to Potions.
“I can’t even imagine what would bring this weather onto us,” Y/N told the group, hoisting her robes up so they wouldn’t be dragged through another puddle.
“Can you cut it out?” Ron asked, rolling his eyes and pulling his cloak tighter around his body. “We’re all cold, we’re all wet, we’re all tired. I don’t want to think of it anymore than I have to.”
Hermione smacked Ron’s shoulder lightly, hissing a stressed be nice, Ronald! before turning back to Y/N.
“Be happy that it’s only been two days,” she told Y/N matter-of-factly. “I read in Hogwarts: A History that it once rained for 29 consecutive days. The weather surrounding the castle was temperate and per usual and no one ever found out why. The professors at the time hypothesized that someone got a little angry with the headmaster and messed with the weather. However, I believe...”
Y/N allowed Hermione’s analysis to take her where she wanted it to, instead choosing to study the various groups of students passing by. A group of 4th year Ravenclaws...uninteresting. She knew of some of their older Gryffindor siblings but had never spoken directly to them. A few strides behind, 2nd year Hufflepuffs were splashing around with a 5th year prefect, laughing and relishing the feeling of rain on their faces. Y/N couldn’t fight off the smile forming on her face--there was something about Hufflepuffs that inspired her to appreciate the present.
Then, as luck would allow, a much stormier group of students appeared around the corner: 6th year Slytherins, with, of course, Draco Malfoy at the very front of the pack.
Oh, how much she hated him.
He had a deep scowl etched into his face, his hood pulled taut over his blonde head. A few rogue strands of his hair were plastered to his forehead. Y/N chuckled to herself as the image reminded her of the Slytherin’s brief stint as a ferret in 4th year...except for this time, he resembled more of a drowned rat.
She decided to tell him as such.
“Oi, Malfoy, are ferrets allergic to water?” Her voice carried across the courtyard. Draco froze, his scowl deepening even further.
“What’d you just say to me?”
The Trio was behind Y/N in an instant, pulling back at her.
“Can we not start anything? Please?” Ron pleaded.
“Yeah, it’s too early for this,” Harry added. “Can you take a rain check?”
He yelled the last part out, clearly directing it at both Draco and Y/N.
Too late.
Draco was already in front of Y/N, his icy eyes ablaze.
“Maybe I should give you the same treatment,” he snapped, unsheathing his wand and rolling up his sleeves.
“Oh my god, he’s actually gonna do it Harry,” Y/N heard Ron whisper. “Are you gonna to help?”
“Listen, she got herself into it,” Harry mumbled back. “She could use this as a wake up call to not start any more shit.”
“Come on, Malfoy,” Y/N taunted, holding her empty hands out in front of her. “Do you even know the spell for that?”
“For your information, Transfiguration is one of my best subjects,” Malfoy snarled.
Oh. Now that she thought about it, Transfiguration was the only class he surpassed Hermione in. Sensing impending doom, Y/N reached for her own wand.
She hadn’t been holding it for more than a millisecond before she was disarmed, her wand falling down to the ground and just narrowly missing a deep puddle to her right. Flinching at the sight, Y/N bent down to snatch it up, praying that Malfoy would at least be a gentleman. She had no such luck.
She heard him begin to mutter something under his breath, no doubt the spell that would transfigure her into a ferret. Adrenaline pumped through her veins. He was really going to hex her while she was on the ground?
Y/N managed to jump up in time, abandoning her wand and instead dodging the spell by leaping to the side. Without her wand, Y/N only had one choice to save herself from the next attempt--she had to disarm him manually.
Before Malfoy could gather his bearings Y/N had sprung at him, her bare hands outstretched to knock his wand out of his arm. She was not successful--he jerked his hand out of the way before she could reach it. Instead, Y/N’s hands met the soft skin of Malfoy’s bare arm.
Pop!
The sound rang out, akin to the sound of apparition, but much louder, like everyone in the country decided to apparate at once.
Stunned, the two leapt away from each other. Y/N’s first instinct was to locate her wand, which she did without much trouble.
When she was sturdy on her feet again and ready to fight, she noticed something incredibly strange--not only was Malfoy not rapidly firing hexes at her, everything was completely silent, except, of course, the heavy breathing of Malfoy across from her. He was just as stricken as she was, but his eyes were darting around the scene surrounding him.
The first definite clue that something had happened was the rain. It was no longer falling--but that isn’t to say that the sky had cleared up. No, instead, the drops were stalled in the air, almost like what raindrops looked like when they hit the window if they were suspended in midair.
The second clue was the fact that no one was moving. The whirlwind of motion that had surrounded them in the instances before had halted. Curious, Y/N turned to her friends. Hermione was frozen, her wand up and pointing at Malfoy with a determined expression on her face.
Y/N would’ve smiled, pleased to know that her friends wouldn’t really leave her to be hexed without any help after all, but the situation was far too strange. Her best friend’s eyes were wide and unblinking. A raindrop that had just bounced off her hood was hovering above her brow, the silvery fragments levitating next to it.
“What is this?” Y/N’s voice had lost all previous conviction as the statement broke the crippling silence.
“I...er.....I don’t know.” Malfoy shifted his weight back and forth, deciding to flip his hood off his head now that it wasn’t being assaulted by rain. The fabric collided with the still raindrops above him. Y/N watched as the water fell into motion, pummeling back down to the ground.
“Maybe if we touch everyone, they’ll unfreeze,” Y/N offered.
Malfoy looked like he had something nasty to say in response, but he quickly closed his mouth before jogging over to his friends. He roughly poked Zabini, jumping back directly after to gauge his reaction.
Nothing. Zabini’s body swayed away from Malfoy’s jab, but he did not spring back to life.
“That was a horrid idea, Y/L/N,” he snapped.
“And yet you tried it!” Her frigid hands curled to fists at her sides. “This isn’t my fault!”
“That’s not true!” Malfoy fired back. “The last thing you did before...this...happened was grab my arm! That triggered it!”
“I wasn’t the one trying to hex someone with their back turned!”
The two continued sparring, yelling various insults back at each other and shifting the blame. Eventually, Y/N ran out of venomous things to say and just stood there, her cloaked chest heaving and her fists clenched tight.
“Are you done now?” Malfoy taunted, twirling his wand around his fingers.
“Are you?”
The pair glared at each other. Y/N took note of the fact that they had taken a few steps closer to each other during the yelling match and immediately felt uncomfortable with the proximity.
“What are we going to do?” she asked wearily as she took a step back. “Obviously this has something to do with the two of us...unless this is an elaborate prank pulled on us.”
“A prank!” Malfoy straightened up, a relieved smile on his face. “Exactly! It has to be a prank!”
Y/N furrowed her brow, shaking her head at him.
“You’re an idiot! How could so many people freeze at once! And look at that 2nd year--she’s frozen in midair!”
They both turned to where she was pointing to see a young Hufflepuff floating over a puddle.
“Plus, who would even want to prank us like this? It’s not very fun.” She drew her pointed hand back, crossing her arms instead.
“Well, gee, I don’t know, people don’t like either of us very much,” Malfoy said, his voice annoyingly void of expression.
“What do you mean they don’t like me? It’s you they have a problem with!”
Malfoy shrugged, reaching up to unstick the wet hair on his forehead before flipping the soaked strands back onto his pristine blonde head.
“I don’t know. I’m just brainstorming.”
She glowered for a few moments, refusing to let him off.
“Ok, princess, what would you like me to do?”
The pet name startled her out of her disgruntled state.
“Excuse me?”
“You’re standing there acting like you want me to do something,” Malfoy pointed out. “So, in interest of shutting you up, what is it?”
“Well, I’d certainly like to get back into a world where my friends are acting like they’re alive, yeah?” Y/N tilted her head at him and raised an eyebrow. “But I don’t know if I want to deal with such an intolerable partner such as yourself.”
Malfoy bristled up.
“I’d like nothing more as well. Can we just...call a truce? For the time being, until we get out of here.”
What? Y/N stood frozen as the rest of her classmates in that moment, her brain refusing to comprehend what her enemy had just told her. A truce?
“You mean it?” The words tumbled out before she could stop them.
“You’d think I’d say--” Malfoy stopped himself before he let out another biting remark, huffing dramatically instead. “Yes. I do.”
“Okay then.” Y/N stepped forward, extending her hand and tucking her wand back into her pocket. “Let’s start out simple. Maybe if we touch again, the world will return to normal.”
Malfoy raised an eyebrow but didn’t say anything back, instead reaching his own hand out to grasp hers in a handshake.
“But,” he interjected, right before their hands met, “The truce ends when this situation does.”
“Deal.”
With that, they shook hands. Y/N was overjoyed when she felt an airy, light feeling in her stomach, almost like someone had set off sparks inside her at the meeting of their skin. It seemed as though Malfoy felt it too, as he glanced eagerly around at their surroundings. Y/N followed suit, dragging her eyes away from the blonde Slytherin and praying to see movement resume around them.
Nothing. Everything was still, and the thick, deafening silence hung in the air between them.
“Okay, so it isn’t reversed like that,” Y/N pointed out rather lamely. “What next?”
“Do you think time has stopped?” Malfoy suddenly butted in, ignoring her previous question.
“Well...” Y/N thought for a moment. “Yeah. That’s what I assumed. Do you think it could be anything else?”
“Let’s go find a clock,” he suggested. “I would think that time has stopped, but if it’s a prank, then it probably hasn’t...that would take immense and mature magic to do.”
“Okay.”
♥♥♥♥
It took a while to locate the big grandfather clock that Malfoy insisted was always on time, no matter the occasion. Malfoy kept saying “no, nevermind, other corridor” and grabbing her arm to pull her in another direction.
The most horrifying aspect of their trip was the sheer amount of still students and even faculty that they passed by. McGonagall was in the middle of lecturing a rowdy group of 3rd years, her crooked index finger pointed at them in emphasis.
Y/N found it hard to believe that such an esteemed woman would stoop to the level of a prank this concerning, but that didn’t mean she didn’t try pleading with her.
“Please, Professor,” she whined, turning her head as Malfoy dragged her down the hall. “If this is a prank, please make it stop. I don’t understand why this is happening...”
Malfoy scoffed.
“You really think McGonagall is going to do us any favors when I’m with you? You’re even more daft than I thought.”
Y/N shoulder bumped him aggressively, sending him a sour look.
“Truce, remember?”
Sighing dramatically, Malfoy just steered her down another side corridor, one she had never been down before.
“Ah, here it is.”
Malfoy cast a quick Lumos to observe the clock in the dim corridor and was cemented into his beliefs when he noticed that the second hand was completely stationary.
“Yeah, time’s stopped alright,” he reported, extinguishing his wand. “This probably isn’t a prank.”
He watched in shock as Y/N slumped to the ground by the wall, holding her head in her hands.
“What is it?”
“I can’t believe this is happening to me, of all people!” she exclaimed, vividly enunciating her words with her hand movements. “I’ve never done anything bad, I follow most of the rules, I’m only occasionally a pain in the arse, and now suddenly I’m stuck in a...glitch in the matrix or something, with you none the less!”
Malfoy raised his eyebrows.
“Truce, remember?” He took extra care to imitate the exact way she said just a few moments ago.
“It’s not an insult, it’s just the truth!” Y/N cried out. “You sure as fuck know how much you torment me and my friends on stuff we can’t change!”
Females. This was why Malfoy never lasted in relationships--girls were different. You couldn’t just treat them like trash and expect them to forget about it.
“Can we please just focus on the task at hand right now? You can yell at me all you want after this is all sorted out.”
Y/N lifted her head from her knees to glare at Malfoy. Perhaps it was just the low lighting that was messing with him, but he thought he could see the slight gleam of unshed tears in her eyes.
“Why? We apparently have all the time in the world,” she countered. “And plus, what if we never get out? What if I’m stuck in this with you forever?”
Malfoy ran a hand through his hair, leaning on the wall opposite of hers.
“We can’t afford to think like that right now,” he told her. “There has to be a reason behind this. People don’t get wrapped up in these things randomly without us knowing about it.”
“But what if the world is going on as normal right now? What if we just disappeared?”  Y/N’s voice struggled to hold in a sob.
“Are you joking?” Malfoy scoffed. “You seriously think that I could go missing without someone noticing?”
“Please, Draco! Stop!”
“Stop...what exactly?” He sunk down to the ground as well. They would’ve been eye level with each other if Y/N wasn’t hung between her knees. “And why did you call me Draco?”
“Is that seriously what you’re concerned about right now?” Y/N wailed. “Whether or not I used your surname? Are you kidding me? We’re in the middle of a crisis!”
Malfoy couldn’t help it--he let out a small chuckle.
“What are you laughing about?”
“A crisis? Really?” He pushed his laughter back, leaving just slight amusement on his face. “I could think of plenty of girls that would consider this a blessing.”
“You’re deranged.”
“Truce!”
“Fuck you.”
Y/N stood up, brushing her robes off as she began to stride off down the corridor they came from.
“Where are you going?” Malfoy called, getting on his own feet as well.
“I’m going to find out how to get out of here,” she responded, raising her voice so it would carry. She didn’t even bother to look over her shoulder. “And since you’re so difficult, I want to do it by myself. Come find me when you want to behave.”
Her figure disappeared as she turned a corner, leaving Malfoy to sort out his own feelings.
Why had that hurt him?
♥♥♥♥
While she was afraid, Y/N couldn’t hide the fact that she was overwhelmed with possibility. If she truly had all the time in the world, then maybe she could read all the books in the library, or study for all of her N.E.W.T.S, or...she shut off the naughtier thoughts. If she had no moral backbone, perhaps she would go around messing with the frozen people surrounding her, but she knew that was a bad idea. Even suspending the concern for basic human decency, she knew full well that Draco was going to try and unfreeze time. If he managed to do so while she was in the middle of mussing up Parkinson’s hair, she would be brutally slaughtered.
So, naturally, she began to make her way to the library. Y/N’s first instinct would be to ask McGonagall for help, but she was clearly not a viable option, so studying and perusing books would have to suffice.
But what would she even search for?
The silence finally felt natural once she stepped into the library. There were a few students frozen in their spots, but not enough to disturb Y/N anymore than she already was. Madam Pince was at her desk, holding a book just inches above the table.
“Looking for something?”
The sudden sound made Y/N leap in the air as Draco appeared around the corner, holding a few books in his hands.
“You git!” she hissed. “Keep it down!”
“Or what? Madam Pince will throw me out?” His lip quirked.
Y/N let out a nervous laugh.
“Oh...guess you’re right.”
He rolled his eyes, turning his back to her to head back over to a bookshelf and shooting an “Am I ever not?” over his shoulder.
She chose to skip over the general Arithmancy, Charms, and Potions sections and headed straight for the restricted section. Without Pince to stop her, she’d finally have free rein, something she had never had before. Momentarily, Y/N was happy, even if it meant that she had to freeze time for it.
Y/N worked diligently, skimming through every book on the shelf. Nothing mentioned instances of time stopping under the conditions that occurred for them--rather, she read a fair bit on time turners and the like. But nothing, absolutely nothing, offered any information regarding time freezing over something as simple as a touch.
She was incredibly disappointed. If she were to choose any section that would help her with obscure magic, it would be the Restricted section, and even it managed to fail her this time.
The familiar rope of anxiety tightened around her throat, and suddenly she was fighting for her access to oxygen. Her breaths became shallow pants as she braced herself against the bookshelf.
Calm down, calm down, breathe, breathe.
“Oh, shit, Y/N, are you okay?”
A flash of blonde appeared in her peripheral, dashing towards her. The sudden movement should’ve startled her, but for some reason, the prospect of having a moving, breathing human with her was more comforting than anything. Even if she hated his guts. Even if he just recently tried to transfigure her into a ferret.
Y/N found herself unable to respond, instead choosing to focus on chanting her inner mantra of in, out for each breath she took. She could see that he was much closer now, sidled up to her left shoulder.
“It’s me, Y/N, you’re okay,” he told her, reaching up a hand to grasp her shoulder. It wasn’t necessarily the sweetest gesture, but the amount of pressure was just enough to ground Y/N and keep her breaths from shallowing into frantic gasps.
She nodded, still not trusting her voice to work. A pale hand that was not her own reached up to push a strand of hair out of her face.
I’ve really done it this time she thought. I’m so off my rocker that I’m hallucinating Draco Malfoy being nice to me.
Her eyelashes began to flutter closed as she swayed and lost her balance. This was new--any time she had felt too overwhelmed in the past, she had only gotten breathless and a little lightheaded, never actually woozy.
She attempted to use her voice to tell Draco that she needed to sit down, but it betrayed her, her statement coming out as a string of mumbles.
“What was that?” She could see his face, granted, it was fuzzy, but even she could decipher the concern etched into his face.
“I need to sit down,” she finally got out, barely hearing herself.
Realization flowed into Draco, and within seconds his arms were around her, guiding her way to the ground. Y/N was a tad shaky on the way down, but she managed to keep her head on straight. Once she was indisputably sitting on the floor, Draco retracted his arms and sat up straight, watching as she leaned back into the bookshelf and cast her eyes to the ceiling, breathing shakily.
He knew better than to push for an answer at the moment, so he waited for her to offer an explanation.
It didn’t take her long to regain her strength. Blinking the cloudiness out of her eyes, she leaned forward and looked Draco in the eyes.
“Why are you being so nice to me?”
“Truce.”
At some point in time, Draco had sat down opposite of her, his knees drawn to his chest, mirroring Y/N’s position. The aisle was cramped enough for their knees to brush every time one of them shifted, and she wasn’t so sure that she minded that. Not anymore.
“Do you want to tell me what happened?” Draco asked gently, reaching out a hand to place on her knee. He told himself that it was simply to steady her--nevermind that she looked fine and was no longer swaying anymore. He was just a gentleman like that.
“Er...” She swallowed, looking up at the ceiling so she wouldn’t need to meet his eyes. If he saw her now, he’d know just how afraid she was. “I was searching this section, hoping to find something, and I didn’t, and the Restricted section has everything and I realized that if it’s not in here then it’s probably nowhere and no one knows and even if they did they could’ve help us because they’re frozen--”
“Y/N, breathe,” Draco commanded, letting his fingers spread to hold onto her knee a little firmer. “It’s all going to be okay. The Restricted section only would’ve helped if this was Dark Magic, or had some kind of offensive secret behind it. It doesn’t feel like that, does it?” He motioned to the air around them.
Y/N had to agree. She was scared, but at the same time, she didn’t feel like she was in immediate danger. There was no essence of evil around.
“Have you found anything?”
“No, but I’ve only searched the History section. I didn’t find much in there. There were a few odd mentions about time stopping, but I didn’t really get what they were referencing...they were all very old books.”
Y/N nodded.
“Do you want to check Divination next? Just in case.”
Draco rolled his eyes.
“I can’t say that I’m enthused, but I guess that we have no choice but to do so.”
He jumped to his feet before Y/N could start moving, extending a hand out to her.
“I just got overwhelmed. I’m not going to die,” Y/N grumbled.
“You’re the only company I have,” Draco responded. “How do you think I’d feel if something happened to you?”
With that, he snatched her hand himself and pulled her up, albeit very carefully to her pleasant surprise.
♥♥♥♥
Between the two of them, it didn’t take long to skim a good portion of the books for anything regarding the freezing of time. Y/N was beginning to lose hope as they neared the final section.
Sensing her worry returning, Draco stepped closer to her, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder.
“We still have the entire library to search,” he soothed, his thumb moving in a tight, slow circle. “Don’t worry.”
Against her better judgement, she leaned back into him, allowing him to support her weight as her eyes squeezed shut.
“How are you not scared?”
“How do you know that I’m not?”
“Truce.”
Draco immediately backed down.
“Sorry. You’re just so easy to disagree with.”
Y/N giggled--actually giggled, to her horror--and attempted to distract herself from the embarrassment by engrossing herself in the next book she had pulled down. Draco had turned back around and was reading his own finding.
Her eyes, tired from the mounds of books she had skimmed before, lazily flicked over the table of contents before seeing a title that stopped her in her tracks.
When Time Freezes, 394
Y/N quickly flicked to the page, her heart beating fast. Could this be it?
It was.
“Draco, Draco, I think I’ve found something!” she cheered, spinning around to grab him. He snapped his own book closed and peered over her shoulder.
Together, they scanned the page, and together, their faces paled and jaws dropped.
“So...we’re soulmates? And that’s even a thing?”
Draco had moved away from her, leaving a few feet in between them. It seemed appropriate given how surprised he was, but still. The desired distance stung Y/N a little, but she was determined not to show it.
“Ridiculous, I’ve never heard of ‘soulmates’ being anything but a fantasy some people get wrapped up in.” Draco’s mouth twisted back into a scowl. Y/N realized that that was the first time he’d frowned ever since they’d begun to work together.
“It makes sense that you wouldn’t,” Y/N prodded. “It’d be such a rare phenomenon...it doesn’t discriminate on whether or not you’re a wizard or a muggle, it doesn’t care if your soulmate is halfway across the world and will never meet you. It doesn’t care if your soulmate dies when you’re both children. To meet a soulmate, even if it was real, would be such a rarity that of course no one would speak of it...with 7 billion people on earth, how would you know?”
Draco nodded begrudgingly.
“So, instead, time just freezes until you can figure this out?”
“It says right here that in ancient times, before humans had moved all across the world, it was much more common and it that was fabled to have inspired the phrase about how one’s heart stops when they see someone they love. And I assume the frozen time, triggered by the first time their bare skin touches, is offered to give the pair time to connect, and er....naturally perform the act that would unfreeze time without even knowing why time is frozen.” Y/N’s cheeks grew embarrassingly hot and she was sure that Draco could see it.
“And...what exactly is that? I didn’t read that far.”
“You have to....” Y/N swallowed and closed her eyes for bravery, “...kiss the other person.”
She wished that she hadn’t looked so pathetic, sitting there with her flaming cheeks over nothing but a kiss.
The sound of laughter broke her out of her pity party.
“What’s so funny, Draco?”
“You’re this flustered by a...kiss? Seriously?” He was doubled over, his hands supporting his weight on the bookshelf. “You’re joking, right? This is no big deal. We just do it, forget about it, and move on, yeah?”
“I thought you’d be less agreeable about it,” Y/N confessed, her face impossibly red.
“I mean, on a normal day, I might have reservations, but I’d do just about anything to get back to normalcy. I don’t think I can take this much longer.”
Y/N felt an unexpected dagger twist in her heart. It was really that bad to spend time with her?
“Of course, let’s just get it over with,” she choked out, hoping that he didn’t see how conflicted she was.
“No, not yet.”
Y/N knit her brows together in confusion.
“We need to be back in the courtyard! If we’re there one second and gone the next, people will have suspicions,” Draco explained slowly.
“Oh...yeah, I forgot.”
♥♥♥♥
On the walk back, Draco laid out very clear rules--if this worked, neither of them would speak about it again. His reasoning was that every married couple he knew weren’t soulmates--if they were, they would’ve said so.
“So, it shouldn’t matter much whether or not we’re soulmates,” he rationalized. “You’re a muggleborn, I’m a Malfoy, this just isn’t going to work out. I’ll go off and marry a pureblood, you’ll go off, and...”
His voice trailed off, and Y/N was suddenly hyper-aware of the lump forming in her throat. All the affection that he had shown to her...fake, just simply the product of their bizarre circumstances. She had thought for a second that he... but she should’ve known better than to trust his kindness; it was all a front.
“What’s the matter, Y/L/N?”
“What?”
“You didn’t have a biting remark to my slight,” he pointed out, shooting her a curious look.
“I’m just distracted,” she lied, dragging her fingernails across her palms.
“What could be more enthralling than the fact that we’re about to unfreeze time!” He gestured grandly to the still students around them. They had arrived to their original spot and life as she knew it was about to resume. So why did she feel so bad?
“I don’t know, the fact that the universe thought that we were a perfect match for each other?” Y/N was horrified by the squeak her voice had become. “And the fact that you’re acting like it doesn’t matter?”
Draco shoved his hands back into his pocket, seeming to be deep in thought for a few moments.
“Soulmates are dated,” he finally offered. “Even if you are my soulmate--”
“I am.”
“Still.” His face was stony, expressionless. “We’d never work out. Not in my family. And after all, do you mean to tell me that you want to spend the rest of your life with someone who almost transfigured you into an animal against your will?”
“I...er...I...” Y/N’s tongue suddenly seemed too large for her mouth. He’d really backed her into a corner, and judging by the way he was observing her, he damn well knew it. “I don’t know.”
“Perhaps it’s better that we just don’t think about it anymore.” He took hold of her hand, gently leading her over to where they had been standing. “Throw your wand on the ground.”
Y/N did as instructed, letting go of his hand in the process.
“And you, put your hood back on,” she said, pointing at his head.
He did so without complaint.
“So this is it, then,” Y/N stated, a little part of her hoping that he would correct her. “We’re going back to our fighting. The truce is over. And we’re going to pretend like we aren’t destined for each other?”
“If soulmates really were destined for each other, then why do none of them meet?”
Y/N prayed that Draco thought that the wetness on her cheeks was from walking through the sheets of still rain. Perhaps if she kept telling herself that, she’d believe it too.
“Oh, and, Malfoy?” She was bitterly pleasured when he saw the hurt flash in his eyes with the usage of his last name. “Roll up your sleeves, will you?”
Poking his wand in his pocket, he made quick work of the job while Y/N attempted to pretend like he didn’t look like the most precious thing when he had his hood on.
“Okay, so,” he began awkwardly once his sleeves were taken care of, “You’re going to grab my forearm the way you were before, and I’m going to lift my other hand to cover our faces from my side...”
Y/N drowned out the instructions, instead suddenly panicking at what she was about to do.
“...and....Y/L/N, are you even listening to me?”
“No,” she admitted.
“Is something wrong?” She hated the way his eyes shone with what a bystander--or anyone, really--could interpret as genuine worry. She knew better now.
“I just...” Her breath caught. She had no reason to be confiding anything in him, but for some reason, the confession left her before she could veto the idea. “I didn’t imagine my first being like...”
She trailed off, giving up on finding the words to fit her inner turmoil. Draco’s ice blue eyes widened with amusement.
“You haven’t kissed anyone before?! I can’t say that I’m shocked.”
“No need to rub it in.” Y/N looked up at him with the nastiest glare that she could muster, which, unfortunately, was pathetic at best.
“Don’t worry, I’m good enough for the both of us,” he joked, placing her hand on his forearm. “Just shut your eyes. It’ll be over before you know it.”
He gazed down at her, waiting for her venomous objection. When it didn’t come, he took one step closer to her. “You ready?”
Y/N only had time to croak a weak “yeah” before he leaned in and pressed his lips to hers. It was wetter than she expected--but then again, the tears running down her cheeks had gained enough momentum to moisten her lips, and the rain certainly hadn’t done her any favors either.
Draco was right; he really did know what he was doing. It was all she could do to grip onto his forearm and allow him to lead. It began gentle enough, just the tender interlocking of his enviably soft lips and her inexperienced ones. Then, in a moment of bravery, his got more insistent, prying at hers tentatively, encouraging her to open them.
She was clinging onto his robes with her free hand, twisting them around and pulling him closer as her tears continued to flow. The salty taste of the kiss gave her away, but she had passed the limit of caring. It was all about to be over, anyways, and Draco had made it more than clear that he had no interest in having her.
Instead of giving into his demands, Y/N steeled herself and pushed him off her.
Pop!
The shrill sound bounded through the courtyard as Y/N bent down, snatching up her wand and pointing it back to a very shocked Malfoy.
“Try that shit on me again,” she spat, hoping that the now falling rain was disguising the wetness on her face. “I dare you. I will ruin you.”
He snarled.
‘Forgive me. I should’ve known better than to waste my time engaging with you, anyways.”
With that, he spun on his heel, turning back to the now breathing group of Slytherins. They were walking out of sight before Y/N could even comprehend what she had done. Had she just imagined all of that? No, that didn’t make any sense. She knew what happened, and she wasn’t a lunatic.
“Y/N, never do that again!” Harry exclaimed, rushing towards her and holding her face in his hands. “Are you okay? Why are you crying?”
Y/N sucked in a shaky breath, gazing up at Harry’s green eyes that were filled with actual worry, the exact thing that Draco lacked.
“I’m okay. Just tired. I don’t know why I did that...I’m sorry.”
She exhaled the apology, managing a weak smile to reassure the boy.
“Can we go to Potions now? The sooner it’s over, the sooner we get to lunch,” Ron complained a few feet away.
Y/N’s smile grew into a larger one as she was reminded of why she chose her friends after all.
♥♥♥♥
Y/N wished that Potions was filled with awkward eye contact and sexual tension...but unfortunately, Draco was treating her exactly as he had previously. Maybe she really was batty. Maybe she really had hallucinated it all.
But one touch to her tingling lips reassured her that she was not loony, and it was only when she brushed her fingertips over them that she noticed a certain blonde boy watching her out of the corner of her eye. The pit in her stomach that had existed since the kiss deepened.
Why did she feel so gross all of a sudden?
In the end, he did not try to talk to her and he most certainly did not try and make peace. Y/N was left to brew in her own confusion, but thankfully, she knew what to do.
After class, she took Hermione aside, telling Harry and Ron that she had “lady struggles” that she wanted to discuss. They both awkwardly nodded and dashed off, leaving the two to their own devices.
“‘Mione,” she began. “So, you know how Malfoy and I kind of...went at it in the courtyard this morning?”
Hermione raised her eyebrows and nodded. “And?”
“And, something else happened. I better show you; are you alright coming to the library with me?”
“Am I ever not alright with a trip to the library?” Her face cracked into a smile as the two made their way up to the library.
Y/N tried not to wince as they passed the corridor with the clock. The hole inside her sent pangs through her heart.
♥♥♥♥
“Divination? Er...” Hermione sent her a quizzical look as Y/N pointed to the section she had spent a considerable amount of time in that morning.
“Please just trust me,” Y/N breathed, dragging her friend as she desperately searched for the book. If she found it in the place they--well, her and Draco--had left it, then she would have concrete proof that it was real and not some weird daydream.
Her fingers pulled at a spine that looked suspiciously familiar, rejoicing when she recognized the cover.
“It’s this one, Hermione! Page 394! Read it, please!”
She thrust the book into her friend’s arms before she could contain herself, watching as she skimmed the pages, her eyebrows furrowed in concern.
“That’s what happened to me this morning,” Y/N told her. “I know that I must sound ridiculously mad, but it happened, and I just don’t know what to do, and now that it’s over, I just have this weird empty feeling inside of me...”
Hermione’s eyes were wide, and, for once in their lifetime, she didn’t look like she quite knew what to do.
“Tell me more. I want to understand.”
So, Y/N recounted the tale of the morning to her, attempting to gloss over the moments where Malfoy was especially soft but noticing that Hermione’s eyebrow cocked higher every time it was mentioned.
“So, he kissed you?” she asked incredulously.
“Yes, and I liked it,” Y/N choked out, fighting back a fresh wave of tears.
“I believe you.”
“What?”
“I said, I believe you.” Hermione rubbed the bridge of her nose. “I’m shocked that Draco Malfoy has found a match in anyone, but I love you, and you know that, so if he’s worthy of you...then maybe he’s not as bad as I originally thought.”
“It doesn’t matter,” Y/N argued. “It doesn’t matter whether or not he’s worthy of me. He’s not interested because I’m a muggleborn...but he’s my soulmate, Hermione! How am I supposed to get over this and forget about it? And that empty feeling inside of me is just getting worse by the minute, like this chronic homesickness...”
Hermione allowed Y/N to weep on her shoulder, wrapping her arms around her midsection and holding her close.
“Don’t worry, Y/N, it’ll all turn out alright in the end,” she soothed. “There’s more to life than love anyways. You have great friends, talent, brains, a loving family...”
Her hand stroked through Y/N’s hair as she began to calm. Y/N sat up, offering Hermione a weak smile in return.
“What would you do if you were me?”
Hermione sighed, clearly expecting the question.
“Well...I wouldn’t give up. I wouldn’t want to make a fool of myself, either, though. If I were you, I’d tell him how you feel at the moment and see what he says. If he still doesn’t want you, then that’s that and I’d count my losses and decide to start a business to fill the void.”
“Want to be business partners?”
Hermione just shrugged.
“We should go eat, you look weak. Perhaps you should send him a note, get him to meet you somewhere.”
Y/N smiled gratefully at her as they made their way to the Great Hall, hand in hand.

She couldn’t bring herself to write the letter. The furthest she ever got was to the second line of the parchment...always beginning with a
“Dear Dra Malfoy, I can’t stop thinking about you and I want to see you again and I’m willing to forgive you for the past..”
She crumpled up the parchment before the ink even had a chance to dry, no doubt smudging the hastily scrawled words to the point of no repair.
There was no way around it. Y/N was never going to be able to send that letter, much less write it.
She needed a walk to clear her head. The cold air always helped, and when it rained, feeling the droplets on her face grounded her.
Slipping out of bed and padding quietly out of her dorm and common room, she was immediately hit with the rush of cold air. It was cooler than Y/N expected--normally when it rained in Scotland, the humidity in the air kept it from getting too frigid, but it was positively chilling outside.
She paid no mind to where her feet were taking her, accepting the fact that she was along for the ride. They seemed to have a purpose...she was no longer dawdling in the halls like normal; instead, her legs were briskly carrying her down into the lower floors of the castle.
The dungeons. Of course, how could she have been so shocked.
Y/N couldn’t be sure where the entrance was--she couldn’t see the door, after all, it only appeared once one uttered the correct password, but she just knew. There was no explaining it, it was just a fact that Y/N felt as sure about as she was her own name.
She stood there for a while, studying the stone of the wall and imagining Draco coming in and out, going about his everyday life casually, without a care in the world for her feelings. She couldn’t help but wonder if Draco had even considered honoring their destiny as soulmates.
“Give me a sign, please,” she whispered, not talking to anyone in particular. “Tell me whether I should try. I’ll leave him alone if you tell me to. I promise.”
Silence. Dead silence, just like when time had frozen, but she knew better. It was just the middle of the night and she was in the castle’s dungeons...the only people out of bed were tired prefects patrolling.
Speaking of which, footsteps broke the silence as they descended the staircase leading to Y/N’s corridor. She sat frozen in the hallway, unaware of where she could go. There was really only one way out of the dungeons that she knew of--the way that the footsteps were coming from.
Her only other option was to hide, and quickly. Thankfully, there was a tapestry covering an alcove and window that no doubt looked into the lake. She bolted behind it, hoping that she didn’t make too much noise.
The footsteps grew closer, allowing Y/N to hear the conversation going on between the mystery people. The empty hole in her stomach tugged.
There were two distinct male voices, one more painfully familiar than the other.
“--and thanks again for agreeing to help me get into the library at this hour. I completely forgot that that old bat wanted us to write an essay on this obscure Divination thing.”
Draco.
“Anytime.” Y/N could identify the second male voice as Theodore Nott, another Slytherin who was tight with Parkinson and Zabini.
“I think I’m gonna take a walk, so don’t wait up for me,” Draco said. Y/N wished that she could see him.
“Whatever you say.”
Nott murmured something under his breath, and the sound of stones softly moving apart filled the air.
Once he had stepped inside the common room, the stone sounded like it moved back into place.
Y/N had no chance to breath a sigh of relief, because just as she was about to let out a shaky exhale, she realized that a tall, slender shadow was standing right in front of her tapestry. A wand was poked around to the edge before it moved the tapestry away to reveal her hiding spot.
“What, are you planning on jumping me or something?” Draco asked, his eyebrows shooting up in inquisition.
Y/N felt her cheeks burning. Merlin, why couldn’t she do anything but blush when she was around him?
“Can you speak?” His words were deliberately slow and taunting.
“You know the answer to that,” she bit back.
“Ah, gotcha!” His face lit up briefly. “You know, that’s the easiest way to break the ice with you...get you mad.”
“I’m not mad!” Y/N huffed,
“I rest my case.”
“Arsehole!”
“Are you going to tell me why you’re standing outside my common room at 1 on a Friday morning?” He studied her for a second, seeming to realize that she was going to remain stubbornly silent no matter what he did.
“Fine. If you won’t talk, I’ll find another way.” Draco pocketed his wand, moved the tapestry away further, and sat down on the windowsill with Y/N beside him.
It was an insanely close fit--the windowsill was probably not even meant for one person. Y/N attempted to ignore the fact that their legs had been forced to tangle in the process of Draco sitting down.
“I was taking a walk,” Y/N told him. “And I ended up here before I heard you coming. I wasn’t sure if you were Filch or Snape or something, so I hid. Your point?”
If he seemed unsatisfied with the answer, he didn’t show it.
“Pity. And here I was, thinking that you were showing up at my doorstep, begging for me to reconsider my prior decision on...us.”
“Did I ever say I wasn’t?” Y/N dared. “I wasn’t planning on begging, though.”
There. There it was--a deep red blush that spread over his pale face.
“What?”
“You heard me,” Y/N grumbled. “This is weird, very weird, and I didn’t ever think that in a million years I would be pining after Draco Malfoy, but I guess things change. I’ve been--”
“Pining after me, huh?” His eyes had a dangerous glint in them.
“Besides the point. I actually came here because I wanted to.....ehm....” Y/N cleared her throat. “I wanted to tell you that I was having trouble moving past the whole soulmates thing without a hitch. It hurts, you know, and I didn’t even think i liked you that much before. It’s like there’s this hole--”
“In your chest? Yeah, I feel it too,” Draco admitted as he intently studied the book in his hands.
“Well, even without the empty feeling, I just can’t imagine willingly passing up my soulmate like this,” she confessed. “It’s easy to say that most people don’t meet their soulmate anyways so it shouldn’t matter, but I can’t imagine getting into relationships when I know that my soulmate is out there and it’s not the person that I’m with...”
“I’ve been feeling the same way.”
Y/N didn’t know how to respond, instead giving his statement time to hang dry in the air.
“Do you want to see if there’s anything else in the book?” he finally asked, stroking the leather cover in his lap.
Y/N nodded, and instead of placing the book in between the two of them, she just leaned over, her head just millimeters from his shoulder. She thought for a few moments before letting it fall onto his, squeezing her eyes shut when she heard him suck in a breath.
“Page 394, right?” Draco asked, even though they both could see the table of contents laid out clearly in front of them.
She didn’t even bother responding to his question, choosing to watch him flip through the book to find it.
They skimmed the first page they had read together that declared how soulmates discovered each other. Turning to the next page, they were both surprised to see a bit of an afterthought added.
“So, if you know who your soulmate is and choose to ignore it...” Y/N’s eyes flickered nervously up to his.
“Then you’ll live with a painful guilt forever unless they, or you, die,” he finished, the eye contact that he offered rather wobbly.
The thought sat with the two for a few moments as they pondered.
“Is it that worth it to you?’ Y/N asked after a while, breaking his gaze and looking down.
“Is what worth it?”
“Keeping your bloodline pure. Is it so worth it that you’d allow us both to live a lifetime of despair?” Y/N wished that she hadn’t sounded so much like she was pleading.
She could tell Draco was thinking, something she couldn’t tell disappointed or pleased her. On one hand, he was considering both options, but on the other, he even had to consider when to her the answer was as clear as day.
“No, I don’t think it is,” he breathed, letting the book slip to the ground. Y/N winced as the binding hit the floor with a smack.
“Don’t worry,” he whispered. “A simple Reparo will fix it.”
Y/N shivered when she felt his breath tickle her neck. She had moved her head off his shoulder before asking the question and tilted her head to the side, and now Draco’s face was leaned in, inches from her own.
This was too good to be true.
“Just like that? You’re going to forget the years of prejudice your parents pressed into you? You’re going to defy the wishes of your family?”
Draco frowned.
“Can’t I say one thing we agree on?” Unlike their past conversations, there was no venom behind his words. “You don’t need to be difficult anymore. I promise I’ll try not to be a nuisance.”
“How am I supposed to trust anything you...”
Before she could finish her rebuttal, Draco had placed a surprisingly warm hand under her chin to tip her face up, gazing sleepily into her  eyes.
“Stop getting in your head about this,” he quietly instructed. “We can worry about the rest later. Just...close your eyes and try to feel, not think, alright?”
Y/N waited for the ominous feeling inside of her to warn her not to, but it never came. Without a conscious decision to do so, her eyes fluttered shut.
She did exactly as he told her to do--instead of thinking of the repercussions, she chose to feel each kiss that Draco pressed to her lips, her jaw, her neck. Her fingers curled around the lapel of his suit, desperately clinging onto him as he continued.
When he finally pulled back, she was an unraveled mess of breaths and flushes, and from what she could see, he was too. His ice blue eyes were half-lidded, his moonbeam blonde hair tousled.
Draco leaned on her, resting his head on top of hers.
“Truce?”
“Truce.”
final a/n: ooohhhh boy this was a long one, wasn’t it? sorry if the ending was a little anticlimactic. i’m much more into writing the buildup than i am the actual fluffy moments. my apologies for any typos or bad writing you came across in this fic...it was long so i didn’t spend as much time working on editing!

Eye of the Beholder
When Belle contracts an illness that leaves her badly disfigured, the Beast is the only one who really understands how she feels.  One-shot, 2.5k words.
The illness came on suddenly.
One afternoon, while Belle was perched in one of the windowseats in her library, reading a swashbuckling romance in a patch of winter sunlight, she began to feel a headache and chills coming on. She tried to brush it off as just a cold, but by evening she was feverish, and a crimson rash spread across her arms and neck.
By the next morning, the staff began to truly worry. They exchanged grim looks and discussed her condition in hushed voices.
But whenever the Beast came near, or demanded an update, they all gave him forced smiles and optimism. “You know Mademoiselle Belle, she is a determined girl! She will pull through in no time,” Lumiére assured him, a little too heartily.
They urged him to stay out of the sickroom. There was no danger for the enchanted servants, they insisted, because objects couldn’t catch a disease. But the Beast was still flesh and blood. Her illness, they feared, was very infectious.
For a few days, the Beast tried to content himself with standing guard outside Belle’s door. He needed to be near her, but he didn’t want to intrude. Their friendship—once a feeble spring seedling poking through the snow, now blossoming into something stronger—was a delicate balance of distance and closeness, and he hated the thought of disrupting that. She might not appreciate him seeing her so vulnerable, might be annoyed with him when she got better.
But she must be so bored lying in bed all day, he grumbled to himself. Does she have enough books in there to keep her company?
Tired of pacing the hall and wringing his hands, the Beast retrieved a new stack of books from the library for her.
He debated with himself for a moment, then tore off a scrap piece of paper to leave her a note between the pages of Gawain and the Green Knight. His handwriting was barely legible—his oversized paws were awkward for holding a quill—so he kept the message concise.
Belle: Sorry you are sick. I miss you. Please get well.
Staring at the wobbly letters, the Beast felt his ears flatten in shame at how inadequate they were for expressing all he wanted to say. If only he were an ordinary man, if only he had the power of eloquent language, if only he had the courage to lay his heart completely bare to her…
Those three simple sentences would have to suffice for now. He could only hope that Belle would understand the depth of feeling behind them.
“Mrs. Potts,” he said, when he reached the door with a stack of book under his arm, “I know you won’t let me into Belle’s room, but would you at least let her have these?”
Her eyes softened into something like pity, and the Beast’s stomach sank in dread.
“I know what we said to you, sir,” she said gently, “but now I think it’s best if you go to her.”
Somehow her kindly tone made him all the more anxious, for it seemed as if she were trying to prepare him for bad news. The books dropped to the floor in a heap. The Beast tore into the sickroom without another word.
Smallpox. No one had used the word aloud, but from the moment he saw the sores on her face and arms, he knew what they meant. Her fever must have been high, for her brow shone with sweat, and she tossed and turned in her uneasy sleep.
Cogsworth was perched on her bedside table amongst the bottles of herbs and tinctures, looking just as lost and useless as the Beast felt. Nevertheless, the Beast demanded, “What can I do?”
“Speak to her, Master,” Cogsworth said in a small voice. “Perhaps she can hear you.”
The Beast knelt at her bedside and held her limp hand in both of his paws. His mind was reeling. He couldn’t quite process what was happening.
“Belle, you have to keep fighting,” he whispered, his deep, gruff voice hitching. “You’re the strongest person I know. Please, you can’t give up.”
She still did not open her eyes, but the crease on her forehead smoothed a little. As if the sound of his voice brought her some comfort.
The Beast stayed by her side after that, reading aloud to her though he stumbled over unfamiliar words, laying a cool cloth over her forehead and stroking her hair to soothe her when she grew restless. He still did not know if she was truly aware of his presence, for she was still delirious with fever. Once or twice, her eyelids fluttered and she murmured under her breath.
“Papa?” she croaked.
“No, he’s…I’m sorry, he’s not here right now, Belle,” he told her, wincing in guilt. “But he’s safe at home, I promise.”
She sank back into her stupor with a sigh that seemed both disappointed and relieved.
Maybe I should try to get in contact with her father, he thought. Maybe she would feel better with him nearby.
But the Beast couldn’t exactly waltz into the village square looking for the old inventor. And why should Maurice believe anything he said, and not suspect it was some kind of trick or trap to lure him back to the dungeons?
Enchantress be damned, curse be damned, the Beast didn’t much care what happened to himself anymore. All he knew in that moment was that he could barely breathe. He wanted to see her eyes open again, those warm brown eyes that sparkled bright when she teased him, that flashed fierce when she argued with him.
“Belle,” he said, leaning closer to her so that he could almost whisper in her ear. “I’ll make another bargain with you, alright? If you get well, you’ll go home to your father again. All you have to do is get better. I give you my word.”
Belle did not give up. Her fever finally broke, and the servants assured their master that she was through the danger. By the next morning, she was well enough to sit up in bed—propped up by pillows—and drink some of the tea Mrs. Potts brought her.
“I’m sorry for causing you all so much trouble,” she said with a weak smile, for most of the servants had gathered around her bed. “I can’t thank you enough for taking such good care of me.”
“We’re just relieved to see your eyes open once again, Mademoiselle. We were afraid…” Lumiére trailed off.
Belle met the Beast’s eyes from across the room, where he sat in an armchair trying to be unobtrusive.
“Thank you,” she said again, with such feeling that the Beast suspected she did remember his presence in her sickroom. His stomach fluttered nervously.
Then she sighed and turned her attention back to Mrs. Potts on her bedside table. “It’s time I stopped putting it off. Be honest, Mrs. Potts, how bad is it?”
Lumiére cut in, “What on earth do you mean, Mademoiselle?”
She raised her eyebrows. “You know what I mean. My face. How bad is it?”
The disease had left its telltale marks on her face, neck, and arms—round red scabs that would eventually become scars. Lumiére and the others waffled for a moment, insisting that it was barely noticeable, but Belle clearly did not believe them.
Cogsworth silently dragged over a small mirror. Belle winced at the reflection it showed her, then set it facedown dismissively.
“It doesn’t matter,” she said, taking a deep, shaky breath in. “The important thing is that I’m alive.”
“That’s the spirit, child,” Mrs. Potts said.
“Just a touch of powder and you’ll never notice the difference,” Belle’s wardrobe added encouragingly.
The Beast felt his heart ache with sympathy as he listened to the others chiming in with words of comfort and encouragement. He had heard it all before, ten years ago, when they had all tried to cheer him up by saying his monstrous form wasn’t that bad, really, once you got used to it.
But the Beast did not need to get used to her. She was still Belle, still the brilliant, clever, funny, stubborn woman he adored, and to him she could never be anything but beautiful.
Several days passed, and Belle grew strong enough to get out of bed. The Beast was still dizzy with relief that she was alright, but some of his lightheaded joy was wearing off enough for him to comprehend that something was different. Belle wouldn’t quite meet his gaze properly, and even when she smiled, it didn’t reach her eyes.
Did I do something to upset her? He couldn’t help wondering. Or maybe…has she guessed that I’m in love with her, and now she feels uncomfortable around me? His heart twisted painfully at the possibility.
He suggested that they take a walk through the still-frozen castle grounds, emphasizing that the sunshine and fresh air would do her good. And at first, that seemed to be the case. The gardens were beautiful even in winter, hedges blanketed in soft snow, icicles clinging to the sculptures and fountains.
She grinned, admiring the sparkle of the snowflakes that caught the sunlight. His heart swelled a little—that was the Belle he recognized.
He slipped on a patch of ice on the path and went sprawling back into a snowbank, but the pain and indignity were completely worth it to hear her laugh again.
“You’re lucky you’ve just been sick, or else I would be burying you in snowballs right now,” he growled, dusting snow off his cloak.
“Oh, is that so?” she taunted, raising her eyebrows archly. “Are you sure it’s not because you’re scared of being defeated again?”
“Defeated? That’s definitely not how I remember it happening, Belle.”
“Whatever makes you feel better.”
They were falling back into their old playful rapport, and the Beast began to feel like maybe things were going back to normal. Yet every time there was a lull in the conversation, a sadness crept into her eyes again.
They stopped to rest for a moment on a bench near a frozen pond, Belle rubbing her hands together to warm them. But then she paused in the action, her body grew stiff, and she buried her hands in the folds of her fur-lined cloak.
She must’ve noticed the scabs on the backs of her hands, and it reminded her, the Beast realized with a pang. The same thing had happened to him countless times—whenever he started to forget the curse, forget how vicious and hideous he appeared, a glance at a mirror or down at his monstrous claws would bring it all back.
Gently, as gently as he could manage, he put a paw on her shoulder and said, “Is everything alright, Belle? Do you want to talk about anything?”
She closed her eyes and exhaled heavily. “It’s not important. I know it’s not important.”
“The scars do bother you.”
“I know they shouldn’t. I’m fortunate to be alive, and I should just be grateful for that. I guess I’m…vainer than I realized, after all.”
There was an unfamiliar weariness and self-deprecation in her tone, as if she were confessing some great weakness.
“It’s not wrong to be upset,” he said quietly. “I certainly was when I—” His sentence cut off, just as it always did when he tried to talk about the curse.
“I just feel like such a hypocrite. I’ve always said appearances aren’t important, but right now I can’t stand the sight of my own face. And I feel horrible admitting that to you, because I don’t want you to lose all respect for me—”
“Me lose respect for you?” he repeated, incredulous. “Belle, that’s not going to happen.”
Tears fell onto her cheeks in silent shame.
“Belle, we’re friends, aren’t we?”
She nodded.
“And you aren’t…terribly bothered anymore. That I am what I am.”
Her eyes widened. “No, of course not. There’s nothing wrong with the way you are.” Her voice held firm conviction, almost anger on his behalf, and it made him smile. But then she buried her face in her hands. “That must sound pretty hollow coming from me right now.”
“No, it doesn’t,” he said. He cupped a hand under her chin so that she would look up at him. “What I’m trying to say is, I think you should show the same kindness to yourself as you show toward me.”
She managed a watery smile.
“And I want you to know,” he continued, his voice quavering slightly with repressed emotion, “that to those who truly”—(love you)—“know you, the scars don’t matter. Not even a bit.”
Her eyes searched his face carefully. “You really mean it, don’t you?” she said, shaking her head in amazement.
“Yes, I do.”
The Beast had not noticed until this moment how close their faces were. He could see every tear clinging to her eyelashes. He could feel the warmth of her breath, visible like little clouds of smoke in the chilly air.
In a sudden fit of boldness, or recklessness, he reached over and carefully brushed aside a stray lock of hair that had fallen across her forehead. She didn’t flinch away from his touch.
Her voice was unexpectedly husky when she broke the silence. “You know it goes both ways, don’t you?”
“What do you mean?”
“You want me to be kinder and more accepting of myself. To admit that I still deserve love, even though I’m disfigured. But you realize that applies just as much to you.”
She reached a slender hand up to touch his cheek—hesitantly, as if unsure he would welcome it. They had never been so unguarded or so openly tender with each other, and the Beast was afraid if he opened his mouth, all the unspoken declarations of love would come tumbling out without his permission.
He closed his eyes and took a deep breath to steel himself. What he had to say, he knew wouldn’t be easy.
“Belle, I want you to go home.”
“What?”
“When you were sick, I made a deal with you. And you’ve kept your end of the promise. So it’s time to fulfill my part. Go home to your father, Belle. Go explore the world like you always wanted. You don’t belong cooped up in here like we do.”
Her eyebrows furrowed. “But I…but I gave you my word…”
“I know. I release you from your first promise, Belle.”
She didn’t look as happy as he expected her to. “Why? What’s changed?”
Everything, he couldn’t say. I have.
He turned away from her, troubled by the pleading look in her eyes.
“You’re no longer my prisoner, Belle. You haven’t been for a long time.”
“I know.”

How is Loving Parker Like? (ABC Fluff) Part-3
Note- This continues from where the previous one finishes.
=========================================================
He takes a sip of his coffee, as we look expectantly towards him.
“It’s about time we wrap up.” Vance smiles, “But I promise more soon.” He gets up and goes inside…
A disappointed groan escapes our lips as we watch Vance vanish behind the doors of his house.
“Some coffee right now would be good…” we ponder as we head towards the only café in Pine Springs. Opening the door, we smile as we come face to face with-
DANNI…
“How can I help?” she politely asks.
“Can you tell us some stories of Vance…?” we ask, like a curious kid. She glances at the watch, unsure, and then shrugs. “My shift is off anyway. Let’s talk over a coffee.” She grins.
.
.
.
“So, what do you want to hear?” She asks, as she puts a stray lock of hair behind her ears.
“Something fun.” We sheepishly grin. (…and intelligibly cut the part of how it had to be about Parker and Vance).
“Ok, you got to listen to this.” She has a devilish grin of a prankster as she continues-
 ===========================================================
7. Date…
Danni was cleaning the counter table with her napkin, when she heard the door open.
“Vance!” she lights up as she watches him enter the shop smiling faintly at her, only to be followed by-
“PARKER?” She grunted a little. What was office Buzzkill doing here? And more importantly, why is he buzzing around Vance?
“Vance, why are we here? There are literally thousands of better places to eat.”
Parker’s ‘encouraging’ whispers were enough to confirm her suspicions. She took a writing pad as an excuse to take orders, as she proceeded to shamelessly eavesdrop the conversation.
“You said that you got a lead about what is this ‘Power’?” Vance said, “I think Danni should also know this.”
The ‘Power’ card again?
Danni felt the need to punch Parker right on his face. Like...Really?
Last time Parker had something to tell about the ‘Power’ to Vance in private turned out to be some otter making splashing noises in the lake. Previous to that, he mistook Imogen riding horse in woods as the Lake Ghost hee-hawing across the woods and asked Vance to accompany him to a lonely hike to see it himself. It did not take her even a split second to put two and two together once she saw how Parker’s forehead was covered with cold sweats under her intense glare. It was pretty obvious that, he was lying again.
Now, there are three type of people in the world. The first type of people are angelic innocent. People like Vance, on whom God definitely spent eons sculpturing the fine looks, the kind soul and the irresistible personality. Who deserve all the good things the world has to offer, and those for whom the world would rather die than see them shed a tear. Then, there were people like her, normal guys and girls, knowing some things about hook and crook, pretty much average – but highly deserving. And last type has those who are incredibly dumb, pathetic, moronic and as sad excuse of cops as one ever could be. Those who are good at nothing – who can’t even lie nor have courage to say the truth, and most importantly, those people who should simply get the fuck away from Vance.
“What’d you like to order?” She sweetly smiled at Vance, watching Parker from the corner of her eyes.
“Listen Danni!” Vance’s eyes light up as he speaks. Did she tell you how giddy that thing made her feel? The sparkle in his eyes which makes her feel the world as inconsequential and makes her feel as if there exists a part of Vance’s heart which lights up on seeing her and for which-
“Can you give me a glass of water please?” Parker stressed the last part of his sentence startling Danni and earning a glare from her.
“Of course, ‘officer’. “She grunted as she turned to leave.
“Wait! Danni!” Vance stopped her, much to Parker’s horror. “Let’s sit and talk, I think Parker has something important to tell- “
“DANNI ASTURIAS? THE LAST TIME I CHECKED YOU WERE PAID TO DO THE JOB AND NOT CHIT CHAT WITH CUSTOMERS.” Her manager’s scream came from behind the counter. She visibly flinched on hearing that and shut her eyes tight. Why did that asshole had to scream when she was in front of Vance?
“I am sorry…” Vance apologized to Danni as she nods understandingly at him.
“Will join you after my shift...” She sighs. As she turned, Parker shoved a napkin onto her hand.
‘Call 1-0-0 and that bastard is dead.’
She watches surprised at Parker who nods, and then smiles. Ok, perhaps the cop wasn’t so bad after all? She smiles a little, and is glad that no matter how much of a catfight she and Parker may do, they are what people call ‘friends’ at the end of the day.
“Oi.” Parker shouts as she reaches the counter, “Two ice-creams and one pizza here please. Oh! And some coffee as well.”
She froze in horror on hearing Parker as her manager shook his head angrily at her. “Next time, when you chit chat with customers, at least take their orders.” He growled as he went into the kitchen.
Danni felt like ripping Parker’s head off then and there. She turned frustrated at Parker, only to find him returning that usual innocent smile – which meant that the moron had no idea on what he did wrong.
She sighed as she went on to prepare the coffee. Vance, like a child, liked it sweet and with whipped cream. Parker liked whipped cream as well. She rolled her eyes as she poured some extra whipped cream into Parker’s. Contrary to what one might feel, she is not mean. It’s just that Parker’s idiocy at times puts her off. Actually no, it’s not Parker’s idiocy. It’s the fact that he is stuck to Vance like a bloody leech that makes her want to punch him. How obvious can one make that he is in love? Parker never failed to set a new low in setting that, and she has to admit she herself is surprised that Vance did not realize it yet. Heck, Vance did not even realize her signs, forget realizing Parker’s. Vance was, as she said, too innocent and angelic to even know of such things. She sweetly sighed.
She picked the ice creams, the pizza and the coffees overflowing with lovely whipped cream (her manager is surely not going to like this…) and took it down to the table with a smile. Vance, took a spoonful of his favourite coffee delight and shoved it in his mouth, humming like a kid. Parker and Danni smiled at that, bathing in the warmth of his smile like a sunbather bathing in sun. Vance had no regards on how he looks when eating it – clearly evident by the moustache of whipped cream above his creamy lips.
Not a good thought ... Danni shook her head as she tried to put her mind off how erotic it’d had been to kiss Vance in such a state.
“Hey Danni,” Parker said in a low voice, “Got some pepper for the pizza?”
She looked at the table, she was definitely sure that all tables had a pepper sprinkler. To her surprise there was none on that table.
“Coming.” She nodded as she turned towards another table which had the pepper sprinkler. Picking it up, she turned around-
…only to find Parker’s hazel irises staring intently at Vance, who merely blinked back in confusion.
And then she noticed it – beneath Parker’s seat, the pepper sprinkler originally belonging to their table – straight and upright.
No… she gasped. That…that couldn’t be possible! The…The police moron outsmarted her? That he hid that pepper beneath his chair so that he could send Danni away and-
“Vance…” Parker’s voice was husky. “You got cream all over your face.” He involuntarily licked his lips. Danni knew where this was going…she clutched the damned pepper sprinkler tight.
“Hmm…? I guess?” Vance sheepishly grinned, unwary of Parker’s advances. “Let me try to take it off.” Vance said as he ran his thumb over his lips.
“Nopes…” Parker whispered as his face advanced towards Vance. “There is still some cream left…”. Parker’s could feel Vance’s breath on his face now. He stopped to absorb the sight for a moment. He imagined how it’d feel running a hand on those lips he dreamt of kissing in so many encounters they had. He intently watched the small whipped cream at the corner of Vance’s lips – the corner which he could caress with his thumbs for eternity. He could breathe in Vance’s scent – he smelled of perfume and soap, fresh and clean – unlike him who’d constantly smell a little sweaty and a little pungent. And he found it tempting, tempting enough for him to forget the world and just smash his lips over Vance, forbidding them to ever leave. And judging by how Vance was looking into his eyes instead of going away, he was sure Vance liked his acrid scent as well.
He finally put a thumb on Vance’s lips, slowly moving it to the corner, trying to relish every millimetre of the smooth skin as long as he could. He then cupped his cheek, his thumb finally at the corner where the whipped cream lay. With a slow horizontal glide, Parker wiped it off, his hazel eyes darkening with the thoughts going on in his brain. Although the cream was wiped off, he had no desire to move away his hand, which cupped Vance’s cheek and kept him from going away. He could feel Vance’s cheeks heat up a bit, his breath hitch up a bit, his heartbeat increase a little. Perhaps he realized that this intimacy is clearly not shared between friends? But he made no effort to move, his eyes were stuck to Parker’s which were full of desire and…thoughts.
Has the moment finally come?
Parker felt that Vance within his reach for once. He felt that if he just pushes himself a little, if he just pulls Vance a little, if he just dares a little – so much as to close the minimal distance between their lips – he would get everything. He again licked his lips, not wanting to pass chance to feel how Vance’s lips would feel after delighting on whipped cream. And with a final resolve, he tilts his head a little, moving his face closer to Vance to –
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
“ACCHHOOOOO”
To his horror, he sneezed at Vance’s face.
“ACHHOOOO”
“ACHHOOOOO”
“AAAACHHHHOOOOO”
Parker sneezed loudly – his spit becoming the latest topping on the pizza while a stealthy drop of mucus fell from his nose into his coffee.
Danni, who might have ‘accidentally’ sprinkled pepper over Parker instead of the pizza, burst out laughing as she handed Vance a napkin and asked him to go wash himself in the washroom. And she was definitely content at watching Parker sneeze for next five minutes, and realize that he could not have any of the delicious looking whipped-cream coffee which Danni made. He gave a pleading look to Danni, who merely whipped her braid behind her head and walked away.
“My shift is over.” She laughed, “Which means now we can actually talk about what you have to say about the ‘Power’ together.”
She’d never forget Parker’s horrified face, or his stuttering to Vance afterwards as he struggled to apologize normally given his social awkwardness. What she could forget was, the gibberish nonsense which the embarrassed Parker stuttered as he threw some random gibberish theories at Vance and her explaining that bear steak was source of Lake Ghost’s immense power.
.
.
.
.
.
“LOL” we clutch our stomach, laughing as Danni shows a photograph of Parker’s tomato-red, embarrassed face. “More! More! PLEASE MORE!!”
“Hm…” Danni pretended to think. “Ok, fair enough.” She smiled. “But only if you can convince me to…” She grinned as we gave her a confused look. “Tell me something which would make me tell you another one.”
.
.
.
.
Q. What should be say to Danni to make her reveal more stories?
a) Vance is home alone right now.
b) Parker and Vance are the best couple and she should fuck off.
c) We can put a good word for her in Vance
d) She and Vance definitely make a good couple.
CHALLENGE- The first part of the fluff focuses on Danni’s perspective, and the latter part (Except the ending) focuses in Parker’s perspective. The challenge is to re-write this fluff with first part focusing on Parker’s perspective and latter part on Danni’s perspective.
ART CHALLENGE - Does this fluff inspire any drawing? I’d personally like to see the scene where Danni watches Parker and Vance with a pepper sprinkler in her hands :p

Last Spring I had the wonderful experience of my first ever solo trip! Although I do have to admit that it wasn’t entirely solo – I’d gone to meet a friend who lived there at the time.
Initially I flew into Carcassonne which is a lovely medieval town with a very interesting castle. It just so happened there was an art installation by Swiss artist Felice Varini at the time of my visit. It was installed to commemorate the site’s 20 years as a UNESCO World Heritage Site – pretty cool right?
Tumblr media
After a bit of time travelling we headed into the city of Toulouse and for the next few days, visited some of the most wonderful places:
Firstly, my friend took me to this gorgeous jewellery making boutique named Fifi Jolipois full of incredible pieces where you could making almost anything you dreamed of (no exaggeration). I imagine this place would be amazing whenever in need of a gift, who doesn’t love something colourful and handcrafted? They describe the shop as a place where ‘votre créativité se sent pousser des ailes’ (your creativity feels like it is growing wings) and I honestly couldn’t agree more.
Tumblr media
When I first decided to visit Toulouse I obviously wanted to know what kind of museums they had – where else was I going to buy my next tote bag from? I asked my friend and did a bit of googling and found the Musée des Augustins which is also the museum of Beaux-Arts. It has an extensive collection of sculpture and paintings dating from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. The reason why it is named Augustins is not because of a link to the first Roman Emperor Augustus (unfortunately for me) but because the gothic building was once an Augustinian convent. However, the best part about the entire museum definitely has to be the Romanesque Gallery full of capitals that date back to the 12th century. These capitals came from various churches across the city that had suffered various manners of destruction. The curation of the exhibition is visibly stunning and being able to weave in and around each capital, looking at every one in detail, was an experience I’ll never forget.
Tumblr media
Marché Saint Aubin. So vibrant, so busy and so French. This market is full to the brim with so many different stalls but of course the food stalls are the biggest attraction. Visiting a Sunday market is almost mandatory on any trip to France.
Tumblr media
Following on from French food The Flower’s Café is a delightful spot in the city. Very popular and rightly so! I had a banana and chocolate muffin perfectly paired with a fresh banana milkshake and Morven had a delicious pecan pie with vanilla ice cream. A great rest bite after a busy day of exploring.
Last, but not least, is my favourite of all… Les Jardins Compans Caffarelli. The most serene place in the whole of the city definitely has to be the Pierre Baudis Japanese Gardens. Peaceful and picturesque, the garden showcases the worlds minerals and plants and even Mt.Fuji! Yes you read that right though it’s actually a small mound just across the red wooden bridge. You may even stumble across a dragon or, a little less terrifying, the Grand Master of Zen. The gardens are inspired by those of Kyoto and offer the people of Toulouse a place to meditate and reflect.

(All pictures were taken on my iPhone)
Here’s some of my favourite 35mm film photos of the gardens:

10 Best Romantic Things to Do in Barcelona

10 Best Romantic Things to Do in Barcelona
Tumblr media
Known for its design, gastronomy, architecture and nightlife, Barcelona is a Mediterranean playground. It strikes a healthy mix of romance meets leisure and no matter what your ‘gusto’ (taste), somehow every activity seems to possess a romantic flare. Whether you’re visiting Gaudi’s Park Guell and overlooking the gorgeous city views, or taking a bike ride along the boardwalk, or even touring Picasso’s Museum, the city’s rich history and striking buildings can’t help but provide for an extremely romantic vibe.
In addition to what the city itself has to offer, just a short train ride or drive outside the city itself are some excellent day trips. Cadaques is a beautiful little town, home to renowned artist, Salvador Dali, it’s a quaint place to stroll, eat, drink and go for lunch at Cap De Creus, where you can see views of the Iberian Peninsula at the one restaurant at the top. Besalu is also a wonderful day trip if you’re looking for an authentic Medieval town and Sitges, just 40 minutes by train outside of Barcelona, is the ideal romantic beach town. Here you will get a great mix of fiesta as well as siesta, especially if you come during the summer months.
Tumblr media
Without a doubt, this is Gaudi’s crowning glory. Set to be completed in 2046, the Sagrada Familia is a Barcelona must-see. Even if you don’t want to go inside, the outside facades, history and master design are equally breathtaking. This is definitely one of Barcelona’s top attractions. A mix between Star Wars meets Gothic architecture, the Sagrada Familia was the last project Gaudi worked on before he was sadly run over by a train. His greatest achievement, however, lives on and is fueled by donations from locals and tourists alike. The hope is that one day his greatest creation will be completed.
Recommended for Romantic Things to Do because: The views from the elevator are incredible, not to mention the Church itself is breathtaking.
Sam’s expert tip: Take elevator to the top and you get sturnning city views.

Tibidabo is one of the best places to take in panoramic city views of Barcelona. Atop this mountain, which is accessible by tram, there is an amusement park, Church of the Sacred Heart as well as some excellent restaurants and places to picnic. This is a perfect way to see some of the outer lying areas in the city, get some fresh air and see gorgeous views. It’s also nice for walking and hiking and if you feel like renting a motto for the day, this is the perfect place to ride through; even park the bike, walk around and go for lunch.
Recommended for Romantic Things to Do because: A great mountain-top just outside of Barcelona for fresh air and gorgeous city views.
Sam’s expert tip: Check out Can Marti restaurant. Excellent during Calcot (spring onion) season and a nice outdoor place for a BBQ.

This modern palace features kaleidoscopic colors in tile, sculpture, stained glass and mosaics. Originally built as a home for the Choral Society, it now hosts musical concerts and is a gorgeous forum to watch live bands and classical concerts. If you’re able to experience a concert in this gorgeous music hall, then definitely do it! Palau De La Musica is a modernist masterpiece, designed between 1905-1908 by architect, Lluís Doménech i Montaner. This is the best place to watch a concert, even if you’re not into the music itself, the design and ambiance provide for a truly unforgettable and fascinating experience.
Recommended for Romantic Things to Do because: The most romantic concert hall in Barcelona to enjoy music.
Sam’s expert tip: Try to catch a concert inside the Palau during your visit.

What used to be ‘Mountain of the Jews’ (Montjuic literally means Mountain of the Jews) has turned into one of Barcelona’s greatest attractions. It’s hard to find views as gorgeous as the ones you get from atop the mountain. Easily accessible via cable car (two of them to get to the very top) train or bus, the panoramic city views you’ll find at the top are breathtaking. Where now sits a military museum and a castle, Montjuic used to be a fortress dating back to the 17th century. Today it is a hot tourist attraction and a nice place for locals to spend an evening. During the summer there is the open-air Montjuic cinema, which features a different movie every night.
Recommended for Romantic Things to Do because: A great lookout point over the entire city and a magical place to walk around.
Sam’s expert tip: Go at night and watch the city light up.

The Citadel was built on this site in the 1700s. After its fall, the fortress was turned into a park in the 19th century. Walk through the city’s Triumphal Arch to enter the park and admire the cascade, a fountain built by Josep Fontser, who was assisted by his young student Gaud. Wander through the beautiful gardens. Don’t miss your chance to visit the zoo and Museu de Zoologia, which are located in the park. This is a very romantic activity, as the park is quite big and has a lot to offer, including a mix of leisure as well as educational elements.
Recommended for Romantic Things to Do because: A relaxing stroll through a beautiful park in the city center.
Sam’s expert tip: Make sure to stroll by the little pond and watch the swans.

Another one of Gaudi’s masterpieces, Casa Mila, otherwise known as La Pedrera, is one of Gaudi’s most well-known creations and is situated on Passeig de Gracia, just a stone’s throw from Casa Batllo. Constructed between 1905-1912, from the outside La Pedrera looks like it is made up of skulls. Architecturally, however, it is considered to be incredibly innovative as its facade is self-supporting. It also has underground parking and separate lifts and stairs for the owners and servants. Something that many people don’t know, is that the structures on the roof were actually what inspired George Lucas’ Storm Troopers for his Star Wars series. This might not seem romantic, but it’s so stunning inside and the clincher is the roof where you can see the city and find alone time amongst Gaudi’s Chimneys.
Recommended for Romantic Things to Do because: The roof is extremely romantic, as you can hide amongst the chimneys.
Sam’s expert tip: From the roof you have great views of the city.

Designed by Antoni Gaudi, this Barcelona mansion was created for the Catalan tycoon, Eusebi Guell and today is part of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. This is one of Gaudi’s many architectural masterpieces and was specifically used for entertaining high society guests in the main room. Palau Guell is particularly special because it is one of the few Modernist buildings in the Old City. Most of Gaudi’s works as well as those of Luis Domenech i Montaner and the rest of their contemporaries are in the Eixample neighborhood, up from Plaza Catalunya and where the expansion began for the rest of the city at the turn of the century.
Recommended for Romantic Things to Do because: A beautiful, ‘Alice in Wonderland’ esque park to walk around, laze on the grass and see beautiful city views.
Sam’s expert tip: Reserve tickets for group tours online and in advance.

Exclusive and authentic wine tastings in Barcelona and Sitges. These wines are locally sourced, from small-batch productions and each has a story to tell. New-Yorker, Ambika Kumar, hosts ‘secret’ venue tastings, focusing on high-quality wines from little-known wineries across Spain. Tastings are paired with delicious food and led by a wine connoisseur and fragrance expert. Each tasting is held in a different location and only revealed to the participants a day before the event. Ambika is professional, knowledgable and engaging so if you’re a wine aficionado or just want to have a romantic evening doing something a bit different, this is an excellent choice.
Recommended for Romantic Things to Do because: A unique, exclusive and authentic evening with a small group of people, great wine and fabulous food.
Sam’s expert tip: Email them in order to get on their mailing list as tastings aren’t posted online.

SH: Barchi on Sundays! Great $5 lychee martinis & I can indulge in a sushi roll or 3 ;)

MH: Anywhere I can bring Wilson, the dog. If it’s sunny, we head to Better Half, but for cold or rainy weather, we hang out in the South Congress Hotel.
SH: I do love the Vietnamese Nitro at Hideout off Congress + 7th! Gives me the feel of a Friends coffee shop + their toasty sandwiches are a fave also.
TSG: What’s your go-to for a special night out?
MH: It’s always changing because Austin is always welcoming a new gorgeous restaurant or bar. Right now, it’s Comedor followed by Garage Bar next door!

TSG: You know you’re an Austinite when…?
MH: ...you leave town for SXSW!
SH: ...you bring your pup to almost every bar + restaurant.
TSG: Favorite part about living in Austin?
MH: Aside from everything? I love that it has a big town culture with a Southern small-town attitude.
SH: Oh boy, I can write paragraphs. Buuutttt, I am going to try and keep it short. I love the dog-friendly atmosphere EVERYWHERE I go. I also love the outdoor culture and all of Austin’s hidden oasis’ - my favorites are around Lake Travis or the greenbelt. I’m also very proud to be part of the community of small business owners here in Austin!
TSG: Describe an ideal day in Austin…
MH: First, let’s set the stage: it’s sunny, but not too hot, allergies are non-existent and there’s no traffic, whatsoever. Wilson, the dog, and I will meet a friend to walk Town Lake, then make our way over to Swedish Hill or Tiny’s for lunch (with a glass of white wine, because #LadiesWhoLunch). After an outfit change, Wilson and I will head to San Jose to get ahead on work and other creative endeavors. If we’re being really indulgent, a massage at Milk & Honey. To follow up a great day, we’ll meet friends for dinner at Perla’s or Junes - outside of course!
SH: Definitely agree with Makenzi’s first sentence. All👏🏼of👏🏼that👏🏼is👏🏼huge! I love to start off the day with an early morning hike on a trail around the Greenbelt and if warm enough, a quick dip into sculpture falls. Then after a rinse + outfit change, head out for treasure hunting through east Austin’s boutiques and vintage’s shops, like Charm School or Dylan Wylde on South Lamar and squeeze in lunch from any food truck that is hiding near, preferably Las Trancas. Finishing off the day with a #happyhour at Whisler’s or Matt’s El Rancho.

30 Things to See and Do in Tokyo
Tumblr media
Posted: 11/23/2019 | November 23rd, 2019
Tokyo is an incredible, massive city home to over 10 million people. It’s the capital of Japan and home to a wide array of fun, historic, and quirky attractions. From the world’s largest tuna auction and the Imperial Palace to robot restaurants and vampire cafés, Tokyo really does have something for everyone.
Whether you’re here for a short stopover or living here as an expat, you’ll be able to find plenty of ways to pass the time and get a feel for the organized chaos that is Tokyo. To help you make the most out of your trip, here are the best things to see and do in Tokyo:
1. Visit the Fish Market
Tumblr media
The Tsukiji Fish Market was one of the most iconic staples of the city. In 2018, the market moved to Toyosu and is now twice the size of the original Tsukiji market. In fact, the new market is the largest fish market in the entire world. While you’ll need a visitor’s pass to enter (you can get one on arrival) the pass is free (which means you’ll have more money to spend on sushi!)
There are over 600 vendors here selling fresh fish as well as fresh fruits and vegetables. Gorge on sushi and marvel at the chaotic atmosphere of the world’s largest tuna market. The tuna auction here powers much of the world’s sushi supply, and it is truly a sight to be seen. You can also see a model of the largest tuna ever sold at Tsujiki — which weighed 500kg (1,100lbs!).
In addition to the new market, the old outer market at Tsukiji still has plenty of restaurants and shops. You can still head there to eat and look around, though all the action is now at Toyosu. Be sure to arrive early to beat the crowds (especially on Saturdays).
Tsukiji Fish Market: 5 Chome-2-1 Tsukiji, Chuo, +81 3-3542-1111. Admission is free. Toyosu Fish Market: 6 Chome-6-2 Toyosu, Koto, +81 3-3520-8205. Open Monday-Saturday from 5am-5pm, though most shops don’t open until 7am. Admission is free.
2. Explore by the Imperial Palace
Tumblr media
The Imperial Palace is the official home of the Emperor of Japan. It’s a terrific spot to learn about Japan’s history and culture. Formerly Edo Castle, the palace was built in the 15th century, and some of the walls and moats from that time are still in use to this day. When the Emperor moved from Kyoto to Tokyo in 1869, he took Edo for his new palace and renamed it the Imperial Palace.
You can’t go inside (or even get super close), however, the building itself is both regal and serene and a great place to relax or snap some photos. The palace is surrounded by beautiful grounds and a park, and there’s a moat around the massive stone walls. Admission to the grounds is free.
3. Experience a Tea Ceremony
No visit to Japan is complete without experiencing a traditional tea ceremony. Tea was brought to Japan in the 9th century by a Buddhist monk and by the 12th century, the ceremony began to take shape. While these ceremonies are usually long (not to mention expensive), there are plenty of budget-friendly options for anyone looking to experience one without breaking the bank. Here are a few budget-friednly tea ceremonies in Tokyo worth checking out:
Kyoto-kan (500 JPY per person, Yanmar Tokyo Building 1F 2-1-1)
Nadeshiko (2,700-4,400 JPY per person, 2-7-24-2F Asakusa)
The Way of Tea (5,500 JPY per person, Coredo Muromachi 3 3F)
  4. Relax in Ueno Park
Ueno Park is a relaxing and beautiful spot to relax for a few hours (or an entire day if you’re not in a rush). It’s a serene spot to photograph the many cherry trees that line the park (which blossom in April and are a huge tourist draw) or to have a picnic on a sunny summer afternoon.
There are also a few important things to see in the park as well. Here are a few sights in the park you should make time to visit:
Tokyo National Museum – Established in 1872, this museum is located in the north end of the park and houses one of the world’s largest collections of art and artifacts from Asia, particularly Japan. 13-9 Uenokoen, Taito, +81 3-3822-1111, tnm.jp. Open daily 9:30am-5pm (8pm on most Fridays). Admission is 620 JPY.
Tosho-gu Shrine – This is a 17th-century Shinto shrine with stunning gold doors and ornate carvings. 9-88 Uenokoen, Taito, +81 3-3822-3455, uenotoshogu.com/en. Open daily 9am-5:30pm. Admission is free, though to go further into the shrine, you’ll have to pay 500 JPY.
National Museum of Western Art – Opened in 1959, this is one of the only art galleries in the country to focus on Western art. The collection is comprised of 5,000 pieces, dating from the Renaissance all the way to the 20th century. There are works by Van Gogh, Monet, Renoir, and Picasso as well as sculptures dating back to the 14th century.7-7 Uenokoen, +81 3-3828-5131 , nmwa.go.jp. Open Tuesday-Sunday 9:30am-5:30pm (8pm on Fridays). Admission is 500 JPY for adults, 250 for college students, and free for seniors and anyone under 18.
  5. Eat at the Robot Restaurant
Tumblr media
This restaurant, literally called Robot Restaurant, is an absolute sensory overload. it has lasers, robots, monsters, music, dancing and much, much more! Sure, it may be a bit of a tourist trap (aka it’s not cheap), but it is an epic dining experience unlike anything you’ve ever seen. It’s definitely worth the price if you want to do something completely out of the ordinary — and something decidedly Japanese.
1 Chome-7-1 Kabukicho, +81 3-3200-5500, shinjuku-robot.com/pc. There are three performances a day on weekdays starting at 4:45pm, with afternoon matinees on weekends.
6. Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum
This small museum used to be the official residence of the Prince and Princess Asaka. Built in 1933, the building itself was influenced by the art deco movement in Paris. The prince had studied in Paris and wanted to bring the art deco style to Japan, hence the building’s style and decorations. In 1983, the residence transitioned into a museum and is now home to a rotating series of modern art exhibitions. See their website for information on what exhibits are available.
5-21-9 Shirokanedai, +81 3-3443-0201, teien-art-museum.ne.jp/en. Open daily 10am-6pm. Admission is 200 JPY, with discounts available for students, children, and seniors.
7. Stroll Along the Meguro River
Tumblr media
The Meguro River weaves almost five miles through the city and makes for a magnificent stroll. There’s a path with a bit of green space that follows the water, so plenty of locals walk or exercise there. In the spring, you’ll be able to see a lot of cherry blossoms as you walk along the banks of the river as well.
While the walk is nice at any time of year, late March to early April is when the cherry blossoms will be in bloom. While there will be a lot of people then (cherry blossom viewing is a national pastime) you’ll be rewarded with some beautiful scenery in the heart of the metropolis.
8. Check out Asakusa
Tumblr media
If you want to check out some of Tokyo’s historic and culturally-significant religious sites, be sure to spend some time wandering around Asakusa. Two places that I’d suggest you visit are:
Senso-ji – This is Tokyo’s most popular (and arguably most famous) temple. It’s beautifully painted and sits in a scenic spot near a pagoda and the Kaminari Gate. There’s a huge statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, inside the main hall. It’s busy during the day so aim to visit in the evening to beat the crowds. 2 Chome-3-1 Asakusa, Taito, +81 3-3842-0181, senso-ji.jp. The grounds are open 24/7, though the temple itself is open daily 6am-5pm. Admission is free.
Asakusa Shrine – This is a Shinto shrine located near Senso-ji. It’s much more peaceful and less busy than Senso-ji as well. It was built during the Edo period and miraculously survived the air raids of World War II. 2 Chome-3-1 Asakusa, Taito, +81 3-3844-1575, asakusajinja.jp. Open daily 9am-4:30pm. Admission is free.
  9. Have Dinner with Ninjas
For another unique dining experience, head to Ninja Akasaka. It’s a novelty ninja-themed restaurant designed like an Edo-era building. The waitstaff are clothed in stereotypical all-black garb and trained in all sorts of simple tricks, sleight of hand, and illusions. You’ll order off old scrolls while being entertained by the skillful tricks of your server. The food isn’t anything special it’s super fun and the atmosphere is unique.
Tokyu Plaza Akasaka, +81 3-5157-3936, ninjaakasaka.com. Open daily 5pm-10:30pm (9:45pm on Sundays)
10. Drink in Golden Gai
Tumblr media
If you are looking for something interesting to do at night, this alley of backstreet bars is a cool spot to start at. There isn’t much going on here during the day, but come sundown, these zigzag hallways and closet-sized beer rooms are filled with interesting people and cheap drinks. There are 6 alleys connected by narrow passageways only wide enough for 1 or 2 people, making it a rather unique place to start your night out on the town. It’s located in Shinjuku.
11. Visit the National Art Center
Opened in 2007, this museum and gallery doesn’t actually have a permanent collection but rather houses a never-ending series of temporary exhibitions, from impressionism to modern art (the Monet exhibition that was held here in 2007 was the most visited exhibition in the world). There are upwars ofr 60+ exhibitons each year so check their website to see what is currently being shown.
7 Chome-22-2 Roppongi, +81 3-5777-8600, nact.jp. Open Wednesday-Monday 10am-5:30pm. Admission varies by exhibit.
12. Eat Below the Girders
Not far from Ginza is the Yurakucho neighborhood. Below the elevated train tracks at Yurakucho Station is a 700m-long stretch of restaurants and bars. There are wine bars, beer pubs, and casual restaurants filled with businessmen. If you want to get a sense of local city life, this is a good neighborhood to explore after the workday is over.
13. Superhero Go-Karting
Tumblr media
If you’re a video game fan (or just want to do something different), check out Street Kart. This is a real-life Mario Bros. go-kart company that lets you dress up and race around the city. As long as you have an international driving permit (which you can get if you have a valid driver’s license), you can take part, racing around the city dressed up as Mario, Yoshi, or even Spiderman.
4-12-9 Sotokanda, +81 80-8899-8899, maricar.com/en/akihabara.html. Open daily 10am-10pm. The course will take 1-2 hours and costs 9,000 JPY per person. There are multiple locations around the city.
14. Check out a Sento
A sento is a traditional (and communal) Japanese public bathhouse. In the past, private baths were rare as accommodations in Japan are notoriously small. While private baths are much more commo today, sentos remaining important cultural hubs. The Japanese are not shy in sentos so you need to be comfortable with nudity! They are typically separated by gender. A budget-friendly sento will cost you just under 1,000 JPY. Just keep in mind that many have rules against tattoos.
15. Visit a Quirky Café
Tumblr media
Tokyo has all sorts of weird and wonderful cafés. Monster cafés, cat cafés, dog cafés, owl cafés, vampire cafés, and much more! If you can think of it, there is probably a café for it somewhere in the city. If you’re looking for something unusual to do (or just want a place to relax after exploring) then take a look and see what weird and quirky cafés are near you (they’re all around the city so you never have to go far to find one!).
Here are some suggestions to help you get started:
Kawaii Monster Café
Vampire Café
Christon Café (Christian-themed café)
Dog Heart (dog café)
Cat Café Calico
  16. See Shibuya Crossing
Tumblr media
This is generally considered to be the busiest (and most famous) intersection in the world. This nearby metro station transports 2.4 million people per day and it’s estimated that upwards of 2,500 cross it at a time during rush hour. At night, the interaction is buzzing. Futuristic bright lights line the streets, with billboards playing videos and ads. It has a sci-fi feel to it (it kind of reminds me of Times Square on steroids).
While you’re here, make sure to visit the statue between Shibuya Station and the intersection. It’s a tribute to Hachiko, a loyal dog who waited for its master every day for 9 years, not knowing his owner had passed away. The dog is something of a national icon in Japan, and the story was made famous by the film Hachi: A Dog’s Tale.
17. Stroll Around Shimokitazawa
Brimming with vintage shops, this Bohemian neighborhood is often compared to New York’s East Village. It’s a great example of the quieter side of Tokyo and offers some more relaxing streets to wander and window shop. Whether you’re looking to shop or just want to take in the scene, this is a cool neighborhood to explore for a couple hours.
18. Gaze at Mt. Fuji from Hakone
Tumblr media
If you want to take a day trip (or a multi-day trip) from the city, consider going to Hakone. It’s located just over an hour from Tokyo and is one of the best places to get away from the city, relax for a few days, and take in the view of Mount Fuji. There are numerous guesthouses in the area, many with their own private onsen (natural hot springs), making it a great place to go for a romantic getaway or if you just want to pamper your yourself.
If you have the Japan Rail Pass you can get here for free.
19. Hang with the Harajuku Girls
Harajuku is an electric and quirky part of town known for its fashion, vintage stores, and cosplay shops. As you wander, you’ll often see “Harajuku girls” walking around town in unique clothing and colorful hairstyles (imagine a 1990s Gwen Stefani video come to life). In addition to all of the avant-garde fashion, there are also tons of trendy restaurants in the area as well. And there is also a monthly Harajuku Fashion Walk which highlights the costumed cos-players of the city as they parade around. For specific dates, check out the group’s Twitter account (@harajuku_fw).
20. Watch a Sumo Match
Tumblr media
Kokugikan is Japan’s most famous sumo wrestling arena. It hosts tournaments three times each year, all of which draw huge crowds. Sumo wrestling (the kind we are familiar with today) dates back to the 17th century, though its origins date back even further. Even to this day, it’s still one of the most popular traditions in the country. If you’re in town at the right time, this is a must-do (even if you’re not a sports fan, it’s a unique and rare opportunity). Tickets sell out quickly so be sure to book early.
1 Chome-3-2-8 Yokoami, Sumida, +81 3-3623-5111, sumo.or.jp/kokugikan. Ticket prices vary, but expect to pay around 2,200 JPY.
21. Watch Traditional Japanese Theatre
Kabuki theatre is a traditional form of Japanese performance involving dance and drama. The costumes and makeup are heavily stylized, making for a very visual performance. The Kabukizaka Theatre, located in Ginza, is the best place to see these incredible and power performances. You can purchase tickets for an entire show or just one act if you’re not ready to commit to a longer performance (they’re in Japanese and usually last a few hours).
4 Chome-12-15 Ginza, +81 3-3545-6800, kabuki-za.co.jp. Performances are held almost daily. Check the website for the most up-to-date schedule. Expect to pay at least 1,000 JPY for a single-act ticket.
22. Visit Daibutsu (the Great Buddha)
Tumblr media
For another day trip, head to Kamakura. Here you’ll find a 13m bronze statue of Buddha that was built in 1252. The statue was initially constructed within a temple, but the temple was washed away — on several occasions — by storms.
Today, the statue now sits in the open air (along with a massive pair of straw sandals that belong to the statue). You can even go inside the statue itself (there isn’t much to see, but it’s still kind of neat to be able to step into a massive statue of that size and importance). The journey only takes about an hour so it’s a great destination for a half-day or full-day excursion.
4 Chome-2-28 Hase, Kamakura, +81 467-22-0703, kotoku-in.jp. Open daily 8am-5:30pm. Admission is 200 JPY. If you have the Japan Rail Pass you can get here for free.
23. Visit the Ghibli Museum
If you’re a fan of the award-winning director Hayao Miyazaki’s work (he’s the genius behind Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Princess Mononoke), then you’ll want to check out this amazing museum. The exhibition was actually designed by Miyazaki himself and is an immersive experience that any film buff will appreciate. The museum hosts a new short film every month, only available to visitors. While a visit here won’t take up a whole day, it’s not in a very central location so you’ll need to plan accordingly (it’s about an hour from downtown Tokyo).
1 Chome-1-83 Shimorenjaku, +81 570-055-777, ghibli-museum.jp. Open Wednesday-Monday 10am-6pm. Admission is 1,900 JPY for adults, with discounts available for youth and children. There are limited tickets available each day so book in advance.
24. Get Touristy at Tokyo Disneyland
Tumblr media
I’m a sucker for Disney attractions! This is a fun choice for anyone traveling with children, but also for any adults who just love amusement parks. Opened in 1983, it has seven themed areas to explore and is the third most visited theme park in the world. it has a lot of the same famous rides you’ll find at Disney World such as Splash Mountain, The Haunted Mansion, and the nauseating Mad Tea Cup Ride.
1-1 Maihama, Urayasu, +81 45-330-5211, tokyodisneyresort.jp/tdl. Open daily 8am-10pm. Admission is 7,400 JPY for adults and 4,800-6,400 JPY for children, depending on age.
25. Hike Mount Mitake
Located just over an hour from Tokyo is Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park. The park covers 1,250 square kilometers of rolling hills, mountains, and lush forests. There are plenty of hiking trails, though you can also take a cable car to the top and then hike to the shrine that sits on the peak, some 930m above sea level. It’s a 30-minute walk to the shrine from the peak/top of the cable car. From there, you can hike for an hour to a small valley with two picturesque waterfalls or continue on to Mount Otake, which is about 2 hours from the summit of Mount Mitake.
26. Stroll through Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden
This park spans over 144 acres and is home to some 20,000 trees. Most of the original park was destroyed in World War II, however, it was rebuilt and reopened in 1949. During spring, the park is one of the best spaces to see cherry blossoms. My favorite part is the Japanese landscape garden, which has several ponds with bridges and islands. It’s a peaceful little oasis within the hustle and bustle of the city.
11 Naitomachi, Shinjuku, +81 3-3350-0151, env.go.jp/garden/shinjukugyoen/index.html. Open Tuesday-Sunday 9am-4pm. Admission is 200 JPY.
27. Visit the Tokyo Tower
Tumblr media
Built in 1957, Tokyo Tower resembles the Eiffel Tower (though the Tokyo Tower is taller, standing 333m). It’s made entirely of steel and you can pay to go all the way to the top floor to take in the view. While the views are amazing, the main observation deck offers one that’s just as good for almost half the price.
4 Chome-2-8 Shibakoen, Minato, +81 3-3433-5111, tokyotower.co.jp. Open daily 9am-11pm. Admission is 900 JPY for the main deck or 1,600 JPY for the top.
28. Visit the Samurai Museum
No trip to Japan would be complete without learning about samurai. While they were known for their skills in combat, there was much more to the culture than just mastering the sword. This museum does a great job of illuminating life as a samurai and it also has some incredible displays of traditional weapons and armor (some of which you can even try on)
Kabukicho 2-25-6, +81 3-6457-6411, samuraimuseum.jp/en. Open daily 10:30am-9pm. Admission is 1,900 JPY per person. You can explore the museum on your own or in a group tour, which are conducted every 30 minutes.
29. Walk across the Rainbow Bridge
This is the city’s most popular bridge and offers some lovely views of both sides of Tokyo Bay. Built in 1993, the bright lights up at night with rainbow colors — hence the name. It makes for a pleasant walk during the day or at night if you need to stretch your legs after binging on sushi.
30. Drinks at the Park Hyatt
Tumblr media
New York Bar is the iconic bar from Sofia Coppola’s 2003 film Lost in Translation. Located on the 52nd floor, the bar actually lives up to the hype of the film. The atmosphere is classy, the drinks are great, and the view is absolutely stunning. There is live jazz every night, and while there is a cover charge (around 2,500 JPY), it’s definitely worth it if you’re looking to splash out.
3-7-1-2 Nishishinjuku, +81 3-5322-1234, hyatt.com. Open Sunday-Wednesday 5pm-12am and Thursday-Saturday 5pm-1am.
***
Tokyo is one of those cities that really does have something for everyone. Nightlife, delicious food, accessible nature, insightful museums, art galleries, relaxing parks — you name it, you can find it here. But where the city really shines is with its quirky offerings. You’ll find tons of weird and wonderful restaurants, cafés, and activities here — things you wont find anywhere else in the world.
While the city isn’t the cheapest in Asia (though there are lots of ways to save money here it offers visitors the opportunity to experience life in one of the most electric, futuristic cities in the world. And, to me, that’s worth the price.
Book Your Trip to Japan: Logistical Tips and Tricks
Book Your Flight Find a cheap flight by using Skyscanner or Momondo. They are my two favorite search engines because they search websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is left unturned.
Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld as they have the most comprehensive hostel inventory out there. If you want to stay in a hotel or guesthouse, use Booking.com as they consistently return the cheapest rates. My favorite places to stay in Tokyo are:
Khaosan Tokyo Kabuki – This is one of the best hostels in the country. The staff go above and beyond, each room has its own bathroom, and it’s in a great location to help you explore the city.
Sheena and Ippei – This hostel is super homey, and the owners are both helpful and knowledgable. The lounge is open to everyone, and you can enjoy appetizers and sake on the weekends.
Hostel Chapter Two Tokyo – This is a small, family-run hostel in Asakusa. There’s a great view of the river and the dorms seem new and immaculately clean.
Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. I’ve been using World Nomads for ten years. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:
World Nomads (for everyone below 70)
Insure My Trip (for those over 70)

How New Nashville Hotels Are Bucking the Airbnb Trend
When Nashville’s current tourism/bachelorette/travel boom kicked into high gear, one thing quickly became obvious: There were not enough places for people to sleep. Thus started a hotel-building boom and a fevered pitch of short-term rental (such as Airbnb and Vrbo) conversions. So far this year, 926 new hotel rooms have opened—on top of 2,304 in 2018 and 1,219 in 2017. (Another 4,567 are under construction with more than 3,300 in the proposal process.)
As housecleaning smoothed fresh sheets downtown, short-term rentals flourished in the neighborhoods, including in East Nashville, known for on-trend restaurants, quirky shops, and an artsy population. Visitors wanted to stay where the locals live—although not all the locals were crazy about it.
Last year Host Compliance, a San Francisco–based company that helps cities enforce their short-term rental regulations, got more anonymous tips about illegal operators in Nashville than it did for any other city. Currently, there are an estimated 1,000 illegal short-term rentals operating in Nashville. (Approximately 2,188 legit permits were issued last year and more than 700 so far in 2019.)
The bar at Vandyke Bed & Beverage.
That’s the background that’s led to a shift. “You aren’t seeing a trend, you are seeing an evolution,” says Robert Baum, one of the founders of Bedderman Lodging, owner of the soon-to-open FieldHouse Jones, of this newest crop of accommodations.
“Airbnb has helped people become accustomed to someone not being on staff 24/7,” explains Micah Lacher, president of Anchor Investments, which owns the Russell hotel.
Five new hotels (well, four hotels and one motel) are bucking both the Airbnb trend and the domination of big international chains through local connections, distinctive amenities, and unexpected addresses.
Tumblr media
Housed in a former church, The Russell has revamped its original spaces for a new generation of travelers.
The Russell
23 rooms; starting at $100. A repurposed church with restored stained-glass windows and pews turned into headboards, The Russell is perhaps East Nashville’s most talked-about transformation. While aesthetic elements of the church remain, The Russell is thoroughly modern, with a podcast recording studio available to the general public and free snacks from local purveyors in the guest rooms.
Standout amenities: Neighborhood bookseller The Bookshop curated titles for the guest rooms and lobby. The local developer of the Russell also owns a small loft property downtown and is working on another church-to-hotel transformation in East Nashville.
The Russell is notable for its philanthropic initiatives including donations to city ministries for the homeless and support for Shower Up, a truck that provides those living on the street opportunities for a hot shower. Lacher estimates the hotel will donate more than $100,000 in its first year.
Tumblr media
The Dive Motel’s retro decor.
The Dive Motel & Swim Club
23 rooms; starting at $150. Scheduled to open this summer, the Dive Motel is a Palm Springs–style swim club on Dickerson Pike, which is northeast of downtown, but not in the hip, tourist-centric area. Historically, Dickerson Pike was the old Buffalo Trail (bronze buffalo sculptures mark the route), and country music star Hank Williams Jr. is said to have swum in the pool of the Key Motel that is being turned into the retro-vibe Dive.
“Most hoteliers rebrand motels as hotels, and I think that’s a bit disingenuous,” says Lyon Porter, co-owner of the Dive Motel & Swim Club, as well as other properties in East Nashville and Brooklyn. “We are tapping into the romantic nostalgia of a motel and also creating what we want out of a motel experience in the present day.”
Standout amenities: The motel will have retro-heavy design (aesthetics are an important element of Porter’s other properties), a swim club locals can join, and disco balls in every room. While many Airbnb listings warn that they are not party properties, the Dive is all about hosting good times.
Tumblr media
The rooftop at the Downtown Sporting Club.
Downtown Sporting Club
20 rooms; starting at $189. The first hotel from Strategic Hospitality, a restaurant company owned by two local brothers who helped change the Nashville food scene.
Standout amenities: Located in the heart of the Broadway strip, and once home to one of the brothers’ successful honky-tonk bars, this ambitious four-story destination features ax-throwing, an indoor grassy area with a large screen for movie watching, a rooftop bar, a restaurant, and a coffee shop.
The third floor houses the hotel rooms, which are in the center of all the Broadway action but also tucked away, thanks to a designated elevator, locked floors, and special glass panes in the floor-to-ceiling windows to block out the noise of the all-night revelry while still providing a view (white noise machines and earplugs are provided too). A vending machine is stocked with the kinds of things travelers often forget—such as toiletries, snacks, phone chargers, and hair ties—sold at non-inflated prices.
Tumblr media
A quad room at FieldHouse Jones.
FieldHouse Jones
93 rooms; starting at $209. Building on its model of successful, quirky boutique hotels in Chicago neighborhoods, owner Bedderman Lodging is opening FieldHouse Jones in East Nashville this summer. Twenty-one of the rooms are suites with kitchenettes, and the business model calls for listing up to 20% of rooms on home-sharing websites, but FieldHouse Jones is definitely a hotel with the service to back it up.
Standout amenities: An all-day snack bar, underground parking (unheard of in this neighborhood), and a rooftop deck with views of downtown should appeal to both locals and tourists. The idea is to be a creative hub within a creative neighborhood in a largely creative city, a place where locals can meet and hang out to collaborate on projects.
Tumblr media
A suite at Vandyke Bed & Beverage.
Vandyke Bed and Beverage
Eight rooms; starting at $249 per night. No, that’s not a typo, the second B in the B&B is for beverage. Located at the Five Points intersection—literally and figuratively the epicenter of East Nashville—the Vandyke features an open-air bar that physically connects guest rooms to the buzzy neighborhood outside its doors. A guest-only rooftop deck provides a little privacy for those who don’t want to mingle with locals.
Standout amenities: Each of the luxury hotel’s eight rooms is named after a different beverage—Champagne, whiskey, wine, beer, tequila, and rum among them—with decor and specific glassware in keeping with that drink.

(From our Summer 2019 Issue)
Austin is warming up and you need to cool off. Don’t worry—we got you. Swim first, drink second. Follow our guide for the best swimming hole + brewery combos to escape the heat and quench your thirst.
Tumblr media
Hamilton Pool or Reimers Ranch + Family Business
Are you a planner? Fabulous, then make those reservations months in advance to assure entry into Hamilton Pool. Oh, and keep your fingers crossed the bacteria levels are in check so your experience extends beyond the short hike in and out. High bacteria = no swimming, bummer. Regardless, Hamilton Pool is a beautiful grotto to behold, and hopefully swim in. Since reservations are required, it shouldn’t be overly packed and you (no dogs) can enjoy a morning or afternoon of swimming.
Not a planner? High bacteria levels? Forgot to leave Fido at home? Don’t lose your shit—just retrace your steps down Hamilton Pool Road about a mile and turn into Reimers Ranch Park. Known best for rock climbing and mountain biking, you’ll also find some good places to dip in the Pedernales river.
Okay, you swam, and maybe hiked a little, now head back down Hamilton Pool Road and quickly you’ll find Family Business and Nate Seale’s beers. Here it’s easy to keep that outdoor-nature-vibe going as you hang out on their spacious patio or shaded picnic tables. Throw the kids in the gated playground area (so smart) and enjoy some grub from Jep’s Southern Roots, their on-site Cajun food trailer. The natural go-to is the Hamilton Pale Ale, but hey, they’re about bringing family together, so everyone is sure to find a match... and even Fido is welcome.
Tumblr media
Blue Hole + Middleton
Another well-known watering hole outside of Austin proper resides in Wimberley. You’ll need reservations to get in during peak season, and be prepared to haul your stuff a ways from parking into the preserved park/swimming area. The creek at Blue Hole is shaded by impressive cypress trees, so not only is it chilly, but there’s very little sun shining through to warm you up (our advice: go when it’s really hot so you can’t wait to take a dip). Feeling adventurous? Take a chance on the rope swing. Although your dog isn’t allowed, picnics and kids are, so come prepared to warm back up on the lawn and relax a while.
After your reservation is expired, or you feel like you’ve got your money’s worth, take Ranch Road 12 south to Middleton Brewing. Middleton offers outdoor, indoor, and rooftop options and is family and dog friendly. In fact, don’t go if you don’t like dogs—there are a lot. They typically have a Slingin’ Sliders on site for you dummies who didn’t take our advice of packing a picnic, and if you stay late enough, your extended drinking may be rewarded with some live music.
Tumblr media
Jacob’s Well + Vista
Wimberlinians are lucky to have not one, but two ‘grammable, natural swimming holes. Jacob’s Well, a consistent 68 degree artesian spring, is pretty small but fabulous for soaking your hot feet as you sit on the ledge, or for making a big splash as you launch off the rocks into the submerged cave. We only recommend this hole for brave big kids and adventurous adults who will take advantage of jumping into the cold water, otherwise you’ll get your picture, pretend you had an amazing time (when in reality you dipped your toe in, shrieked it was too cold and complained that it was too crowded) then leave to get your beer on.
So after you get that ‘gram, head to Vista for an equally photo-worthy taproom and views. Avoid getting derailed by the wineries along the route or the smells wafting out of the Salt Lick. You’ll be rewarded with the likes of the sessionable Adair Kolsch, delicate Le Saison Farmhouse Ale, or their ever-changing board that seems to always include something new or barrel-aged. At Vista, you’ll find bountiful outdoor space, picnic tables, swings and a playscape, delicious offerings from their grill, and if planned correctly, a perfect hill country sunset to cap your day.
Tumblr media
Georgetown Blue Hole + Rentsch
Pinthouse Round Rock not far enough north for you? Head further up I-35 to Georgetown’s Blue Hole, a lagoon on the south fork of the San Gabriel river. There’s a bit of free parking close to the popular El Monumento restaurant, so plan to go early and bring your big ‘ol tube if you’re willing to risk injury on the natural limestone slide (when the water’s flowing). This swimming hole has something for everyone—deep enough to jump in on one side of the dam, and great for cooling off your feet on the other.
Tumblr media
Once you’re ready to leave the other river rats behind and have worked up a good thirst, a short seven minute drive will get you to Rentsch Brewery. First, grab a refreshing Blonde or Hefe (or Radler if you’re feeling fancy), then cool off under their large shade tree and big mister fans—it’s hot y’all. But don’t feel guilty, they brew their beer using 100% renewable energy... so surely their A/C and fans are powered the same way?
Tumblr media
Barton Springs + ABGB
Ahhhh, Barton Springs—the obvious choice for locals and tourists alike. Open year-round, this spring-fed, freakin’ cold pool has 900 feet of blue water, a diving board for you to make a fool of yourself, and sprawling lawns begging you to spread out and sunbathe (tops optional) or doze in the shade.
Tumblr media
And what goes best with a classic Austin swimming hole? Classic, no, institutional ATX brewers:  Amos and Swifty, now complemented by Kim, who produce award-winning lagers to enjoy in the ABGB biergarten, a quick drive south down Lamar to Oltorf and across the tracks. Bring your dog, order a pie, enjoy live music... this is Austin y’all. What’s more is ABGB’s Hell Yes Project lends a hand (lots of hands) in keeping Barton Springs clean, so order another Hell Yes or Rocket 100—it’s like patting them on the back for all their hard work while quenching your thirst. Win-win.
Tumblr media
McKinney Falls + Live Oak & Hi Sign
McKinney Falls State Park, located just west of the airport, has two swimming areas: the Upper and Lower Falls. The Upper Falls is definitely more exciting. Planning to take a jump in? We recommend doing some exploration of what’s below beforehand to keep safe from submerged rocks—don’t be a dumbass. You won’t be able to enjoy that beer later if you crack open your skull or break your leg. Choosing to play it safe? Head to the Lower Falls.
Afterward, a quick drive will get you to one of Austin’s oldest running breweries, Live Oak. The expansive biergarten can yield a long, long..long afternoon of drinking, and possibly a game of disc golf (if you’re into that). Not to mention, who doesn’t want a Hefe on a hot summer day? Still not ready to go home? Just down the road is Hi Sign, where you can kick off your shoes and relax in a hammock while drinking another cool one. From swimming to beer, all are family and dog friendly, so do it right and make a day of it. You can thank us later.
Blanco River + Real Ale
Leave the city behind and head west my friend... west about an hour to Blanco River State Park, right along Highway 281. Come prepared to float, kayak, or swim... but bring something to wear on your feet if you’re the “eww, what was that?” kind of person or just don’t want to bust your ass walking across the dam. The park offers kayaks for rent, otherwise you’re on your own to enjoy the river, which includes bountiful picnic tables, grassy areas, and shade for relaxing.
Afterward, grab a fresh draft at Real Ale, just a few short miles back up 281. Of what? Rio Blanco pale ale, obvs, or stick to one of our refreshing favorites: Hans’ Pils. While you’re there, pick up a big green Hans’ tube for your next river outing, and be sure to enjoy some free classic arcade games on the brewery overlook.
Tumblr media
Bull Creek + Austin Beerworks
If you slept in too late to make it out-of-town, Bull Creek can help you escape the heat and satisfy your need for a dip. As long as there’s water flowing, bacteria levels should be in check. Near the southern entrance there are some good jumping rocks if the water levels are high enough. There’s also a well-worn natural rock slide for the kid in all of us.
Some sections can get crowded by the afternoon, but don’t worry... in no time you can be at Austin Beerworks sipping one of their summertime must-have beers, Einhorn, or another of their taproom only seasonals. ABW is a family-friendly place that knows how to party and offers endless fresh buttery popcorn in their taproom. Grab a bite from their food truck, CAN-tina, to round out your afternoon. Maybe even pick up a new tank, hat, or sunnies to rep this quintessential Austin brewery.
Tumblr media
Hippie Hollow + Oasis
Here’s the cold hard truth: I grew up hearing about Hippie Hollow, but haven’t actually been there. But go, clothing is optional, I’m sure it’s a lovely swim... and especially refreshing if you do it sans suit. Rock that dad bod.
Afterward, hit up Oasis Texas Brewing (not to be confused with The Oasis—unless you want overpriced queso). Here you can enjoy the view while enjoying the brew (ooh, that’s catchy). Grab a Meta Modern Session IPA or Luchesa Lager, along with some food from their Craft Kitchen, then post up—seriously, like you’re Dennis Rodman, desperate for the rebound—so you can score a clear line of site for that money sunset. (For you kids, Dennis Rodman was a basketball player before he became our unofficial ambassador to North Korea.)
Tumblr media
Barton Creek Greenbelt/Sculpture & Twin Falls + St. Elmo
The Barton Creek Greenbelt hikes to Sculpture and Twin Falls are two (overly) popular routes to some nice waterfalls... if Austin’s had any recent rain. If not, you will sadly hike out and be greeted by a couple of fat, hungry mosquito pits. When it’s flowing, these are some nice swimming areas with waterfalls, rocks for jumping, or areas to just sit and soak in the sun. Remember, this is a hike, so leave the flops at home and opt for something more substantial.
Once you’ve had your fun in the sun, head over to St. Elmo for a refreshing and super crushable Carl Kolsch. Ready for more? With a solid and constantly changing board, we guarantee you won’t be disappointed. Their permanent food truck, Soursop, has rich, flavor-packed pan-Asian dishes... and when they say spicy—believe it. While you’re drinking and mowing down some wings, pick up a board game to pass the time, relax outside with your pup, or plan to hit up their Grassy Thursday, a sure hit.

Our 2-day Paris, France itinerary takes you to the most popular things to do in the City of Light, and provides an enjoyable and efficient walking tour through most of the iconic districts. Included are the best art museums, historical monuments, and a few places with great views of Paris.
Note that it’s physically impossible to see all of Paris’ highlights in two days. Even if you literally walk into each of the museums on this list and immediately walk out to “check them off” (not a recommended strategy, for what it’s worth). However, we really try–and these are two morning until nighttime days in Paris that should leave you exhausted but satisfied, having spent the perfect two days in Paris.
If you’re still planning your vacation to France, we’d recommend allocating more time in Paris. For first-time visitors, we would recommend at least 4 days in the city, and ideally 5 days. Even with two full days, this perfect 2-day Paris itinerary is confined to a relatively condensed area of Paris, and doesn’t venture much outside of that, save for Montmartre.
More time is definitely necessary if you also want to visit Versailles, Disneyland Paris, or make a day-trip farther outside the city. We will have 3-day to week-long itineraries very soon, we’re just starting with a shorter itinerary because it’s easy to build these out.
We’d also highly recommend purchasing the 2-day Paris Museum Pass, as you will more than break even using it for this itinerary. You can read our Paris Museum Pass: Is It Worth It? post for more info, but the answer to that question is yes if you’re following our 2-day Paris touring plan here–and that’s true even if you have to skip a couple steps.
The order of these two days can be switched as necessary; we’ve ordered them this way simply because there’s more walking on the first day that will familiarize you with the city, and because it’s the more ‘intense’ day that’ll require fresh legs.
Day 1
Sainte-Chapelle – With Notre-Dame Cathedral likely closed for between 3 and 5 years (our bet is that it reopens in time for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics), that won’t be an option for any near-term trips to France. The good news is that the lesser-known Sainte-Chapelle is arguably the more awe-inspiring experience, and is located mere steps from Notre Dame.
We suspect this is going to be a pretty common itinerary pivot going forward, and the smaller Sainte-Chapelle is simply not equipped for an influx of crowds. Even previously, we recommended arriving at Sainte-Chapelle right when it opened or shortly before closing, and we’ll double-down on that recommendation now.
Other Museum Pass Options – During your half-hour walk from Sainte-Chapelle to the Rodin Museum (you could take the RER or Metro to cut some time off that, but it’s a lovely walk), there are a few Museum Pass eligible spots you might consider visiting quickly.
Chief among these are Conciergerie and Musée Delacroix, both of which can be pretty quick visits. Of the two, we’d more highly recommend Conciergerie, which was formerly a prison, presently a law court, and is also part of the former royal palace. It’s a pretty and unique space, with fascinating history that can be experienced in relatively short order (if you want).
On the other hand, Musée Delacroix is interesting because it’s the artist’s former apartment and studio, but the exhibit area is very small. It’s not something we’d seek out, but you’ll walk literally right past it, and it’s an easy and interesting way to spend 30 minutes.
Rodin Museum – While we wouldn’t rank Musée Rodin among our top 5 museums in Paris, that’s largely a matter of personal preference; the sculptures are beautiful, but they’re not so much our cup of tea. Nevertheless, the Rodin Museum is highly regarded and beloved by visitors…and also, it’s included in the Paris Museum Pass and you’ll walk right past it.
Our full post about the Rodin Museum offers a variety of info and tips, but the big recommendation is to do the outdoor areas first. This is especially true on a nice autumn or spring day, when the weather makes it more enjoyable to be outdoors. We far preferred these green spaces, and as noted above, there are a number of exquisite works on display outside.
Army Museum – This name may not exactly rouse enthusiasm or curiosity, but this is one of the best museums in Paris. Le Musée de l’Armée offers a fascinating collection of all things war related, and recounts the tumultuous military history of France.
With over 500,000 military artifacts and basically the framework for an entire French History 101 course laid out on placards in the galleries, you could easily spend an entire day here. Our first visit, we ended up spending over 4 hours here and still barely scratching the surface.
Even if have even a passing curiosity about Napoleon, the French Revolution, France’s involvement in the World Wars, or literally any historical events that have shaped contemporary France, the Army Museum is a must-visit. Budget 2 hours here, focus on a specific area or topic, and try not to overshoot.
Petit Palais – Located directly across the street from Grand Palais, we recommend Petit Palais since admission to the permanent collections is free, and getting inside the building is the main goal here. Both were built for the 1900 Universal Exhibition and are fascinating as much for their art as their architecture.
There are some nice pieces in the permanent collections, but what we love about the Petit Palais is its Beaux-Arts architecture, triple arcade, and domed roof. It has a light and airy environment that’s a departure from other art museums in Paris. (It’s an especially nice change of pace after the decidedly dark Army Museum.)
Tuileries Garden – This public garden between the Louvre and the Place de la Concorde is popular with tourists and locals alike, probably skewing a bit more towards the latter.
We don’t consider Jardin des Tuileries a “destination” point of interest, but there’s lovely horticulture, views of the adjacent icons, and places to sit. Plus, you’ll stroll right through it en route to your next stop on the itinerary.
Palais Garnier – The opulent Paris Opera House is one of our favorite places in the city. Featuring a medley of architectural styles, the overarching theme of Palais Garnier is lavishness. It’s an architectural gem, and arguably the most extravagant building in a city renowned for its grandiosity.
It’s an odd comparison, but we also view Palais Garnier as a way to experience a slice of Versailles if you’re not making the half-day trip out there. They’re two totally different things, but the impression on visitors is very similar. Note that the Palais Garnier does not accept the Paris Museum Pass and sometimes has inexplicable closures, so check the online schedule day-of before you visit.
Galeries Lafayette Paris – At Christmas, this luxury shopping mall is a must-visit. During the holidays, the beautiful rotunda is adorned with a giant Swarovski Christmas tree that’s suspended in mid-air. The design of the tree changes yearly, with it looking like the above photo a couple of years ago. All other times of year, it’s a lovely mall, but you may feel uncomfortable there.
After Galeries Lafayette, you might consider walking to the Chaussée d’Antin La Fayette Metro Station and taking that to the Palais Royal Musée du Louvre stop. It’s about a 5 minute ride versus a 20 minute walk.
Louvre – In an ideal world, you’re doing this day of the itinerary on an evening when the Louvre is open late. At present, this is Wednesday and Friday, when it’s open until 10 p.m. (Shuffle these two days to achieve that, if necessary.) If not, you’ll very likely have to cut out a stop or two to arrive at the Louvre with enough time to experience a few of its exhibits before it closes at 6 p.m. (on other nights).
Don’t budget more than 3 hours on the Louvre, and don’t go in with any agenda whatsoever. The Mona Lisa is just as disappointing in person as everyone says, and I can’t think of a single exhibit in the museum–even the famed ones–that are actual must-sees. Rather, the highlight of the Louvre is the museum itself, and simply being there. The presentation is phenomenal, so soak that and the museum’s decadent design and architecture up, rather than racing from forgettable exhibit to forgettable exhibit.
Arc de Triomphe – Even if you finish up at the Louvre close to 10 p.m., there’s still time to hop aboard the Metro at Palais Royal Musée du Louvre Station and take the Line 1 to Charles de Gaulle – Étoile and walk to the Arc de Triomphe, which is open until 11 p.m. nightly.
Paris is aglow with color and lights during the evenings, and the best way to see this is from the Arc de Triomphe. This is actually our favorite view of the Paris skyline, as it offers the ideal elevation and the view includes the Eiffel Tower, which, for obvious reasons, cannot be attained when you’re in the Eiffel Tower.
Day 2
Morning in Montmartre – Our second day of the itinerary bears striking resemblance to our 1-Day Paris Highlights Itinerary, albeit with a couple stops from that moved to Day 1 here, and other options added.
As with that, we highly recommend getting to Montmartre early to beat the crowds. This won’t save you any times in any lines, but this quaint, art village feels intimate and pleasant early in the morning, and that atmosphere gives way to touristy madness later in the day.
Ideally, you’ll want to take a relaxed stroll up the hill of Montmartre coming from one of the western Metro stations (we recommend Lamarck-Caulaincourt), which is the village’s more charming side. Spend some time wandering side streets, perusing art shops, and perhaps stopping for café au lait and breakfast.
End your morning in Montmartre by visiting the stunning Sacré-Cœur Basilica, which we think is another more than ample substitute for Notre-Dame. After that, you’ll leave for the Latin Quarter via one of the stations to the east. No need to linger on that side of Montmartre.
Pantheon – Rather than returning to Lamarck – Caulaincourt, we’d now recommend seeing a different side of Montmartre by walking to Gare du Nord and taking the RER B to Luxembourg. From there, you’ll walk to the Pantheon.
This is yet another stop that’s included with the Paris Museum Pass, and is a relatively quick visit (if you want it to be). Admittedly, the Pantheon is not among our favorite spots in Paris, but others absolutely love it and it’s worth at least a quick visit.
Latin Quarter & Luxembourg Gardens – As with Montmartre, the Latin Quarter will be overrun with tourists later in the day, so after a quick visit to the Pantheon, make this area your next stop. There are intimate alleyways full of antiques shops, independent booksellers, charming cafes, and it’s all a lot of fun to explore…so long as it’s not wall to wall tourists.
By the time late morning hits and the area starts getting more crowded, escape to Jardin du Luxeumbourg. This formal park and garden rounds out our “Versailles Consolation Duo” for those who don’t make that trip. The Luxembourg Gardens feature detailed statues, vibrant flowers, plenty of water features, and–most importantly–shade and seating. This makes it perfect for a picnic, so stop into a boulangerie for sandwiches and sweets before heading to Jardin du Luxeumbourg.
Musee d’Orsay – This is the top museum in Paris, and arguably the best art museum in the world. Our full Musée d’Orsay post discusses the “why” of this in detail, but suffice to say, this is not to be missed. Even with 2 days in Paris, you’ll want to limit your time here to under 3 hours.
The bulk of that time being spent in the upper Impressionist gallery, which is home to several masterworks by Monet, Renoir, Seurat, Degas, and other key members from the movement, including pieces on display at the Impressionist Exhibitions in Paris. However, be sure to also see the lower level exhibits, which also contain stunning pieces and great variety.
Musée de l’Orangerie – A short walk across the Seine, is the Orangerie Museum. This has a number of works by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, Amedeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso, Henri Rousseau, but is most famous for being chosen by the impressionist painter Claude Monet as the permanent home for his Water Lilies (Nymphéas) paintings, which are displayed in two large oval rooms.
We love Musee de l’Orangerie, which is small but packs a powerful punch thanks to Water Lilies and a heavy concentration of masterworks in its lower levels. From here, you’ll have a long walk on the banks of the Seine to the Eiffel Tower. Taking the RER between the two is a time-saving option, but we love this scenic Seine stroll, so we’d highly recommend taking the leisurely walk instead of the train.
Eiffel Tower – We disagree with the consensus that recommends doing Eiffel Tower first thing in the morning to beat the crowds. Instead, go shortly before sunset and get a ‘2 for 1’ by experiencing the view during the day and at night. Seeing the City of Light transition from daytime to sunset to dusk to night is an incredible experience that’s worth the elevated crowds.
Our Eiffel Tower: Tips & Mistakes post covers what to do and not do for more thorough planning. Visiting the Eiffel Tower can be frustrating and time-consuming, so you’ll definitely want to avoid common pitfalls and time things so you’re up there for the window between sunset and dusk. After this, we’d recommend culminating your 2 perfect days in Paris with a late night dinner in the area; there are countless options within a few blocks of the Eiffel Tower!
If you’re planning, we recommend starting by consulting our Ultimate Guide to Paris, France to plan all aspects of our vacation. You should also check out our other posts about France for ideas on other places to visit!

Fic: Butterfly Wings - Chapter 29
Story summary A fashion blog started at University launched Blaine Anderson’s fortune and fame. As Vogue’s new editor-in-chief, he is struggling to find an original angle for an upcoming issue. Kurt Hummel has recently arrived in New York City after finishing high school, and is having no luck building a musical theater career, so he decides to explore another passion of his: fashion. He applies for an internship at Vogue, and Isabelle sees in him the perfect fresh face to liven up the magazine, and convinces him to try out as a model. Kurt meets Blaine, and in spite of their 10-year age difference, sparks fly. Can they overcome misunderstandings and sabotage to find their happily-ever-after? Klaine model AU. Rating for this chapter: General (overall story is mature) Word count for this chapter: 5,068 Can also be read on A03 / FF Masterpost is here. The fantastic artwork produced by Cassie at @cc-graphics can be here.   In my opinion, this chapter demonstrates how wonderful @lilyvandersteen truly is as a beta. She has lived in Paris and gave me insightful information about the City of Life. She came up with character of Emmeline - her best dialogue was from Lilyvandersteen; the worst was from me! I don’t speak French and hate it when I can’t follow foreign dialogue in stories. For French phrases that the typical non-speaker would not understand (me!), I placed the English translation in brackets. Please let me know if this worked because Paris will feature in future chapters. *****
“If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.” - Ernest Hemingway
January After Kurt has paid the cashier, he stuffs the new goodies in his messenger bag. He’s bought dozens of postcards of the Eiffel Tower and a Christmas tree ornament of the monument. Even though he could buy these anywhere in Paris - probably at a fraction of the cost - it seems much more authentic buying them at the Eiffel Tower gift shop. The Eiffel Tower is even more impressive in real life than the photos he had flicked through back in Lima. The 360-degree panoramic view at the top is amazing, and Kurt promises himself he will return one evening to see the city of lights.
Kurt’s life has certainly changed over the past two weeks, since he arrived at the Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. Kurt’s first modeling assignment at Dior starts early February. In the meantime, he’s playing the tourist, visiting the top tourist attractions. He bought a Paris Metro travel card and is slowly figuring out the routes of the principal lines. Next week, he plans to buy a Paris museum pass and visit the Louvre, the Centre Pompidou, and the Musée d'Orsay. Of course, two days will be spent at the Palais Galliera, the City of Paris Fashion Museum.
Kurt walks across the bridge spanning over the Seine River to the nearby Place du Trocadéro, a public park with sculptures and an array of fountains. When he turns around, he can see the Eiffel Tower in all its glory and pulls out his phone to take photos. Trip Advisor was right – this is the best spot to view the iconic structure. His stomach starts grumbling and Kurt checks the time, and realizes it’s way past lunchtime. He heads to the 16e Arrondissement, a few streets away, the section of Paris where he lives. He loves exploring the area and its local shops - patisseries, sidewalk cafes, bars, and artisan food shops. He constantly has to remind himself that he can’t explore the local clothing boutiques until he starts working again next month. Kurt smiles when he sees the sign for La Petite Marquise, the bistro around the corner from where he lives. He enjoys the food and the atmosphere, and can’t wait until spring so he can sit in the outdoor area. The bell jingles over the doorway as he enters the bistro, and Kurt immediately sits at his favorite table - the one that’s by the window that lets him watch the passers-by. If it happens to be the table assigned to the cute male garcon – well, that’s an added bonus. Kurt takes his French phrase book out of his messenger bag. His high school French has been useful, but it hadn’t taught him enough of the practical phrases he needs to know in a bistro. “Bonjour, Monsieur. You’re a little later today than usual.” Kurt looks up from the menu and smiles when he sees the cute waiter. He doesn’t know his name, but he mentally calls him Adonis, after the god of beauty and desire. Kurt has already mentally calculated that the slender man is an inch or two taller than him. He has wavy sandy-brown hair, which flows freely to the tops of his shoulders. His green eyes sparkle at Kurt, as he gives him a smile. “Let me guess. Steak frites (steak with French fries) and a glass of rouge maison (house red).” Kurt smiles and meekly nods his head. When Adonis leaves the table towards the bar area, Kurt face-palms. He’d really meant to ask for something else and be more adventurous, but he loves steak frites too much to vary his order. It has far too many calories and grams of fat, but once he starts work again, he’ll go back to his usual diet. For now, Kurt loves the delicious flavors of the succulent steak and the crispy potato pieces. It’s a simple dish, but it feels like comfort and richness all rolled into one. Kurt knows that, if he’s honest with himself, the dish reminds him of Blaine. Kurt fondly remembers his last birthday, when Blaine took him to a small French bistro in Manhattan. The things Blaine did that day to make Kurt’s birthday special. Kurt misses spending time with Blaine and wishes his friend was here to explore Paris with him. Blaine has a way of making everything feel like an adventure. Kurt wonders if he has made the right decision in moving to Paris. Should he have returned to New York City and contacted Blaine instead? So many other factors play into their friendship - it seems impossible that they could make their way back to each other. Maybe in a year’s time, when he returns to the US, but for now, he’s going to enjoy Paris. After finishing his lunch and giving Adonis a generous tip, Kurt heads back home, which is only around the corner. When Louis, his local agent, had arranged a room with his great-aunt, Kurt had no idea that he would be living in one of the most affluent and prestigious residential areas in Paris. The 17th-century town house has been in the family for generations. It’s a three-story sandstone terraced house and it has the typical ornamental wrought iron black bars across the windows. When Kurt unlocks the front door, he can hear the footsteps of Louis’ great-aunt coming to greet him. “Kurt! Come sit down, mon petit. Your feet must be sore from your sightseeing. Come to the front parlor with me. Join me for a cup of tea.” “Merci, Madame,” Kurt politely replies. Kurt’s hostess tuts and cocks her head to the side. “Madame… We are friends, n’est-ce pas (is it not)?” Kurt smiles at her and nods. It’s true, however far apart in age they are, they get along very well. “So call me Emmeline. Madame, ça fait si vieux (Madame, that makes me feel so old).” When Kurt enters the front parlor, he carefully sits down in an ornate chair, whose tapestry seat has seen better days. As Emmeline pours the tea from the antique china pot, Kurt looks at her, taking in every detail. He reckons that Emmeline is in her late 60s, maybe older, and judging from the framed photos scattered through the room, she was a beauty in her day. She obviously enjoys the finer things in life and is constantly reminding him that she was once the grande dame in Paris’ high society. She’s been a widow for years (maybe decades) and now she keeps to herself, enjoying outings with only a select few. While they drink their tea, Kurt tells Emmeline in his best French about his day’s outing to the Eiffel Tower and the Place du Trocadéro. Emmeline quietly listens, correcting a few faux pas in his French. “Run along and get ready, mon petit. We can’t be late for Giselle tonight at the Paris Opera Ballet. Of course, no-one can compare to Sonia Petrovna’s debut performance. Did you know we were childhood friends?” Kurt carefully climbs up two floors, using the old narrow rickety back staircase to get to his room in the attic. It used to house the servants, but it has long been abandoned. There’s only enough room for a bed, a nightstand, a small wardrobe and a sink. The bathroom is one floor down and has an antique claw-foot bathtub. The porcelain layer is fading in places, exposing the cast iron hidden underneath. Kurt’s excited about attending the ballet this evening. He’s never seen a ballet performance live before. Emmeline is doing her very best to show him a different side of Paris, one that she knows so well. Before getting ready, he grabs his tablet and gets caught up with his friends on Twitter. Scrolling through the messages, he sees a photo of Blaine (Kurt’s been meaning to stop following Blaine, but he always seems forgets to do so). On the photograph, Blaine and his father are standing in front of an old dilapidated house, with a sign reading ‘Under Offer’. Underneath is written, The first Monarch House. There’s a link to a news article at the Lgbtqnation website, describing the Monarch Foundation and the purchase of the first Monarch House, located in Westerville. Kurt reads the article and learns that Blaine used his Christmas bonus to establish the Monarch Foundation. Kurt is very impressed with what Blaine has done. Places like the Monarch House are definitely needed in smaller towns in Ohio. Kurt is not surprised that Blaine has done something like this. He has always been generous with his time and money. Part of Kurt wishes that he was back in New York, to help with Blaine’s plans. On the other hand, Blaine looks pretty happy without him. He puts Blaine resolutely out of his mind, looks at the time and yelps. He’d better finish getting ready for the ballet, for Emmeline waits for no-one. ***** “I hadn’t been to the Louvre in years, mon petit. Ack! – too crowded with tourists. Je déteste ça (I hate that). But you need to have seen the Louvre at least once in your life, so I was happy to show you its secrets.” Kurt is glad that Emmeline took him to the museum - she knows a senior curator at the Louvre. They were able to jump the queue to see the Mona Lisa, and the curator also gave them a personal tour of the most precious artworks. Kurt and Emmeline sit down in the front parlor, for their now daily ritual of taking afternoon tea together. Kurt needs to start work next week, and he’s almost relieved. Those three weeks of sightseeing and museums have really wiped him out. He only wishes to slouch on a comfortable couch and watch trashy reality TV… or maybe The Young and the Restless – Cooper’s character is always good for a laugh or two. Kurt starts to think about those rainy days when he and Blaine liked nothing better than to hang out at home. He misses Blaine so badly and wonders if there is any way to get him back. “Mon petit… I can tell you have a man on your mind, yes? And you think only he will make you happy, yes?” Kurt slowly looks up at Emmeline. He knows her well enough by now to know there is something on her mind. He really doesn’t want to discuss Blaine with her – it feels too personal and he’s not ready to share – so he nods and looks away. "Pah! You're too young to - how do they say this in English - put all your eggs in one basket? Now is the time when you should experiment. Try out a few men and find out who you like. What you like. One true love... Weeeell... I've never believed in that, you know. Love isn't something that magically appears and then stays with you for always. Love is what you make of it.” Emmeline wheezes and takes a sip of her tea before continuing. “There are many men out there that could make you happy. In different ways, yes, but that is the beauty of it. I've had three husbands, and each one changed me. Profoundly. Because I evolved with them. We grew together. We built our relationship. We made it work. You need to learn how to do that, too. And this man? If he is really meant for you, you will find your way back to him. One day." Later that night, when Kurt’s in bed in his attic room, he thinks about what Emmeline has told him about love. He’s never thought you could really love more than one person. He’s always thought there’s only one true love – a soulmate – out there for him. But maybe love isn’t like that at all? He certainly agrees with Emmeline’s views about having to work at relationships. He’s already learnt that in his friendship with Blaine. Maybe he could learn a thing from Emmeline and her experience with l’amour (love). She certainly seems to know a thing or two about the ‘affairs of the heart’, as she puts it. ***** Emmeline insists on taking him out for a special treat in the late afternoon on the last Sunday before Kurt starts working. Kurt wears one of his suits and Emmeline takes special care with her outfit, which comprises a dark gray wool two-piece suit and a red fox fur stole. After a ten-minute taxi ride, they enter Hôtel Meurice, the famous five-star hotel in the 1st arrondissement of Paris. The lobby is opulent, from its patterned marble floors to its huge crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. Kurt has never seen anywhere quite like it. Emmeline hooks her arm inside Kurt’s and leads him to the Restaurant Le Dali for afternoon high tea. The maître d' quickly greets them and leads them to table set for three. “Are we expecting someone else?” Kurt enquires, because he doesn’t remember Emmeline mentioning more company. “I’ve asked my grandson, Antoine, to join us. Yeeees, you wonder how a woman so young and beautiful as I can have a grandson already, eh? Weeeell, I started very young!” Kurt fondly rolls his eyes as Emmeline cackles away. He’s so appreciative of her liberal views towards gay men. Maybe her grandson is part of the reason, although he suspects she’s seen everything in Paris’ high society over the decades. “I think you’ll like Antoine. 'e will show you anozzer side to Paris than I can. Ah, here he is now." Kurt stands up to greet Antoine. Kurt’s polite smile becomes genuine when he sees Adonis – the cute waiter from the bistro – standing in front of him. Kurt and Antoine both start to laugh, and Emmeline gives them a puzzled look. “You know each other?” Antoine bends down to give her a kiss on the cheek. “Bonjour, mamie. Lovely to see you. Kurt and I have seen each other at the bistro where I work, but we haven’t formally met.” When Antoine turns to face him, Kurt can see the twinkle in his eyes. “Enchanté (nice to meet you), Antoine.” Soon their high tea is brought to their table, and Kurt’s eyes open wide at the offerings. There are finger sandwiches, toasted to perfection with a variety of fillings such as smoked salmon, pesto and mozzarella, foie gras, caviar and tuna…  Scones with clotted cream and jams… Cookies and tiny cakes, as well as a wide range of French patisserie, each pastry a work of art and absolutely mouthwatering. After the waiter has poured the hotel’s signature tea into their cups, they begin eating the offerings. Conversation is kept light during the meal. They mainly discuss Kurt’s adventures over the past four weeks. Antoine gives Kurt some suggestions on other things he might want to see in Paris. Kurt cringes every time Emmeline hints that Antoine should take him. Emmeline might be a wonderful lady, but subtle she is not. Kurt’s surprised to find out that Antoine is an artist, working at the bistro to pay his rent. He lives on the Left Bank, in his art studio. Antoine seems passionate about making art and helping people. “Excusez-moi, I need to use – comment ça se dit en anglais (how do you say in English)? - the little girls’ room.” As soon as Emmeline has left the table, Antoine leans in close to Kurt. “Mamie is really something. No?” “She certainly is.” “When mamie gets something in her mind, she makes sure everyone knows it. Listen, Kurt, I’ve wanted to find out more about you for weeks. I was hoping that you would make the first move. But never mind, it doesn’t matter now that we’ve met. Next Saturday night, there’s band playing in a small bar on the Left Bank. I think you might like it. Will you join me?” “Like in a date?” Kurt asks, wanting to make sure he interpreted the invitation correctly. “Yes, you can call it a date if you want to.” Kurt chews his bottom lip as he makes his decision. Antoine certainly is handsome and charming. Antoine definitely isn’t like Sebastian, but Kurt doesn’t know enough about him to compare him to Blaine. If he’s in Paris to make a new beginning for his career, why not a new beginning for matters of the heart? “Oui, I’d love to go.” ***** Blaine giggles when he reads the tagline on Lips NYC sign – ‘Every woman has a secret’. He opens the door for Unique to pass through. The club is busy for a Tuesday night. There are several bachelorette parties and large groups of friends amongst the usual crowd. When Unique talks to the host to try and wrangle a seat, Blaine pulls her back and whispers in her ear. “I’m not all that bothered about seeing the show. I really came here tonight to thank the queens for the tips they gave me for the diva-off. Do you think we can head backstage?” Unique nods and pulls him through the crowd until they get to a black unmarked door. The minder takes one glance at them and lets them in. After passing through several corridors, they enter the dressing room. “If it’s not the Queen Diva himself. You had me gagging during your performance, babe, you were beyond gorgeous,” Mary D. Knight says, then gives Blaine a kiss on the cheek. “You saw it?” Blaine tentatively asks. He’s a little nervous about their feedback because what he did on the stage was nothing in comparison to their performances. “We drew straws and Nova China had to go on stage while you were on TV. After we saw you, we had a good ole kiki. You walked the catwalk like your body was for sale and the rent was due that night,” Rhea Listic chuckles. “You’re not here to replace one of us?” she adds with a wink. Blaine ducks his head and his cheeks redden at the thought of becoming a drag queen. “No, I’m not planning to quit my day job anytime soon. However, I enjoyed being on stage that night more than I thought I would. It wasn’t anything to do with the attention, the applause or winning the competition. It was the feeling of being someone different… Being free of my usual inhibitions. The only other time I feel that way is when I’m songwriting.” “And now you know the reason why we do this night after night,” Mary D. Knight utters softly. “Unique, come help me beat my face into submission,” Divine Intervention demands. Blaine watches as Unique transforms Divine Intervention into a queen of beauty. He wonders why most women don’t use these make-up tricks to enhance their natural looks. At that very moment, Blaine has a brilliant idea. “How would you all like to be in a Vogue issue?” Rhea Listic pops a hip to one side and narrows her eyes at Blaine. “You’re not going to put us in women’s clothes. We’re not trying to pass as women – we’re performers! It’s just a character that we play like any actor, but she’s also a version of ourselves.” “I wasn’t thinking about women’s clothes. I was thinking about an article about beauty tips. There’s a lot that women can learn from you.” “Wouldn’t that be pushing the boundaries for a magazine like Vogue?” Divine Intervention asks. “Magazines like Vogue try to present cutting-edge fashion. Why can’t Vogue push boundaries in other ways as well?” Blaine retorts. Blaine thinks about this new idea and expands upon it. “There could be a whole issue that pushes society’s boundaries within the usual content of the magazine. Off the top of my head, I’m thinking advice to women on how to find the right woman, iconic movies that made us question social norms of which gender wears which clothes, things like that.” “It sounds interesting…. But are you sure your readers will like it?” “As long as it’s tastefully done, I don’t see why not.” Blaine quickly makes his goodbyes because he wants to focus on this new idea. Unique opts to stay longer and help with the queens with their make-up. He rushes out of the club and enters the Mercedes-Benz, which is waiting at the curb. “You’re earlier than I thought you would be tonight,” Bentley comments. “I just got the most wonderful idea. I want to think it over, expand upon it and make it really special.” “Thank god for that. I knew you would think of a way to get Kurt back.” Blaine quickly looks up at the mention of Kurt. “That ship sailed when Kurt moved to Paris. No, it’s work-related.” “You’re not going to headline at Lips NYC!” Bentley exclaims. “No, my red feather jacket days are over…. At least in public.” ***** “You must have better things to do on Friday nights than hang out with me,” Wes remarks. They are at the Bin No. 220 Wine Bar, their hangout place for their regular Friday nights. It’s busy during happy hour, but Wes and Blaine have managed to find two bar stools to claim. “Hey, I like your company. I can be myself with you.” “You could be yourself with many people, if only you opened yourself up.” “Not happening, Wes. I don’t want to trend on Twitter again with another guy. Maybe if it’s Kurt... Any news on how Kurt’s enjoying Paris?” “He’s settling in nicely and renting a room from an old lady. He starts work next week for a Dior perfume ad campaign. He seems happy in Paris.” Blaine nods and takes a sip of his wine. Leave it to Wes to not tell him what he really wants to know. “Has Kurt met anybody special? I can imagine that all the Frenchmen are flocking to him.” “He’s not dating anyone exclusively, if that’s what you’re asking. Kurt’s mentioned an Antoine, who’s showing him around the Left Bank. Antoine’s the grandson of his landlady, so I’m not sure what’s going on with that. I don’t pry into Kurt’s love life.” Blaine hangs his head low with the news of Antoine. He knows it’s only a matter of time before Kurt starts dating. How could the Frenchmen Kurt meets not want to be with him? However, even hearing the news of Kurt possibly dating another man is like a stab through Blaine’s heart. “God, I’ve lost Kurt forever,” Blaine sighs. “Blaine, you’ve got to find a way to get over Kurt.” “I’ll never get over Kurt! He’s my soulmate and the one true love of my lifetime.” Wes rolls his eyes at Blaine’s statement. “Blaine, do you know how overdramatic you’re sounding right now? You’re 28 years old, for god’s sake, and you should know better than to drown in your own sorrow. You need to snap out of it. I see how men look at you…. Take a look around the bar tonight. You have options. Take the risk and start dating other men. It will make you feel better about yourself, and who knows, you might enjoy the other guy’s company.” Later that night, Blaine crawls into his large empty bed, adding another blanket because he feels so cold. Sure, he’s got new things going on in his life since Kurt left Vogue – photography, the Monarch House, and even his new friends at Lips NYC. He enjoys them, but it doesn’t stop the lonely feeling deep inside. He hugs his pillow, wishing that Kurt was snuggling up to him. Blaine knows he’s become more reclusive since the Klainegate video went viral. That experience has given him more than enough of the wrong type of publicity to last him a lifetime. Deep down inside, Blaine knows he’s scared to date other men. To lose the hopes and dreams of being with Kurt again. Blaine knows he needs to do something to get out of this funk. He can’t let the loneliness and heartache consume him, otherwise he’ll spiral into depression, and that never goes well for anybody. Wes was right to call him out on it earlier tonight. Blaine can’t put his life on hold until things are resolved with Kurt. After all, Kurt himself will be living the high life in Paris. One thing that Kurt has taught him is that he can take the risk and let new people into his life. It might not be the everlasting love he’s always dreamed of, but he can go out and have fun. ***** Amy walks through the living area with a basket of freshly laundered clothes. She spots Blaine lying on the couch, his eyes firmly gazing at the far corner of the room. “Blaine! Are you just going to stare at that piano all day?... Or are you going to play it? I miss hearing you tickle the ivories.” “I miss it too. I haven’t played since Kurt…. Umm… Since last September.” Amy puts down the laundry basket on the coffee table and sits down next to Blaine on the couch. “There’s nothing stopping you, Blaine. If you find it hard to start again, why don’t you play some of your favorite songs first? I promise not to complain if you play Billy Joel over and over.” Blaine chuckles, sits up, and gets off the couch. “Okay. I’ll do it.” Blaine sits at the piano bench and pulls up the fall board to expose the piano keys. He stretches and loosens up his fingers, and then starts playing simple piano scales. At first, he feels rusty and clumsy. However, after fifteen minutes of warm-ups, his fingers deftly play the keys again. He starts playing and singing ‘The Piano Man’ and repeats the song twice. When Blaine doesn’t hear a peep out of Amy, he decides to step it up a notch. He clears his throat before singing the next song.
Sadie, the cleaning lady With trusty scrubbing brush and pail of water Worked her fingers to the bone, for the life she had at home Providing at the same time for her daughter
Amy immediately comes out of the back bedrooms with a smile on her face. “Very funny, Blaine. Now go back to Billy Joel.”
*****
Blaine bounces his leg as he waits impatiently in the Sherman and Myers Law Firm’s reception area.
“Blaine Anderson?”
Blaine looks up and sees a young lawyer walk towards him.
“I’m Connor Murphy. Please come this way with me,” the tall man says in a soft Southern drawl.
Connor leads Blaine into a small conference room. As Connor sets out the legal documents for today’s meeting, Blaine takes a closer look at him. Connor is tall - at least six inches taller than him - and judging by his physique, he takes good care of himself. He has straight blond hair that is cut and styled in a slightly edgier way than most lawyers. Blaine knows that Connor’s Brooks Brothers suit was released this season, so he obviously keeps up with fashion. He guesses that Connor is in his early 30s.
“I was expecting to meet with Mr. Sherman today.”
“He’s tied up in court. I’m a junior partner at the firm and I’ve personally looked over all the documents. The property purchase in Westerville is very straightforward, especially since there is no mortgage involved. You have the banker’s draft for the cash balance?”
Blaine takes the check out of his messenger bag and slides it across the table. Connor gives Blaine a thick stack of legal documents, with sticky flags on pages he needs to sign. Blaine soon gets into a rhythm of turning pages, scanning the page, and signing.
“I was so happy when Mr. Sherman asked me to take over this meeting. I wanted to meet you in person, Mr. Anderson.”
Blaine looks up and sees the lawyer’s cheeks tinge pink with his confession.
“Why is that? And please call me Blaine.”
“I really admire you for setting up the Foundation. I could have used somewhere like the Monarch House when I was growing up in Tate, Georgia. Back in high school, I didn’t know anyone else who was gay. I would have killed for a place to meet other teenagers like me.”
Blaine takes care to school his expression. This attractive lawyer has just confirmed two things to him. Blaine was right in detecting his roots in the South, and Connor is gay.
“I wanted someplace like the Monarch House as well. That’s why I’m setting these houses up and using my hometown for the first place.”
“If there is anything I can do to help with the Monarch Foundation, don’t hesitate to ask. I’ll even do the legal work pro bono.”
“I’ll take you up on your offer, Connor. I’d much rather use the money towards building Monarch Houses than paying legal fees. I think I’ve signed everywhere that I need to. Can you check?”
Connor quickly flips through all the pages of the purchase agreement and nods when he reaches the last page. “Congratulations, Blaine. You’ve just successfully bought your first Monarch House.”
“Yes!” Blaine shouts, throwing his fist in the air.
“I won’t keep you any longer. You must have big plans to celebrate tonight.”
Blaine frowns, knowing that there are no big - or even small - plans for tonight. “Not really. I was planning to go home and call my parents to let them know.”
“You can’t stay home tonight, Blaine. This is a cause for celebration! I know this great Italian restaurant in the Upper East Side that would be perfect. Its veal dishes are to die for and it’s pretty low key. So…. Umm… Would you let me help you celebrate?”
Blaine looks dumbfounded at being asked out for dinner. His initial reaction is to say no. But spending another lonely night at home by himself is also unthinkable. Connor isn’t like the typical fanboy he meets or someone who has ulterior motives to get ahead. Connor seems like a person genuinely interested in the Foundation. Blaine thinks back to the conversation with Wes last Friday night. Blaine might find he enjoys himself tonight in the company of a new friend, and an attractive one to boot.
“Yes, I’d love to go.”
Author’s notes Don’t worry… this is a Klaine story after all :) I know it's tough with only one update a week, but I want to make sure you get the best chapters I can give you. The review and editing does take some time. Song Blaine plays on the piano for Amy – ‘Sadie, the Cleaning Lady’ by John Farnham.
Next up: Kurt starts work in Paris.

Buck Lairs Continuously
Buck Lairs Continuously monitoring and scouting various trail systems can lead to areas that big bucks prefer to roam. Virtually living solitary lives for most of the year, big whitetails often select the nastiest, most impenetrable piece of real estate in an area to call home. These areas are normally located in sections of timber where deer feel safe. Cedar swamps, standing cornfields, briar thickets, brush-choked streambeds and pine plantations are all areas that offer protection and provide concealed daytime movement. For this reason, bucks will often establish their bedding areas -- or core areas -- nearby.
ature animals will routinely use this type of cover to move from one section of the woods to another. Although bucks tend to let down their guard during the heat of the rut, safety is still their No. 1 concern throughout the pre-rut period. The odds of arrowing trophy deer are excellent in places where they feel secure. Identifying and studying these areas will earn you the opportunity to harvest a true wall hanger.Setting up over trails that link feeding and bedding areas can still produce good results. Bucks will continue to use early-season trails, making short visits at food plots and crop fields as they slowly extend their range into neighboring territory. These excursions focus on assessing the breeding status of local doe concentrations, and storing energy for the rigors of the upcoming rut by quickly consuming high-energy chow.In most cases, trophy bucks choose to travel on less-defined trails that skirt heavy cover. Rarely will you see a mature deer traveling through open timber or crossing an open field at this time. Keeping a low profile is standard operating procedure, but the one weakness bucks have in sustaining an anonymous lifestyle is the uncontrollable habit of leaving behind evidence of their existence. Accurately interpreting and processing this information can be a tremendous aid in devising a plan of attack.Solving The PuzzleThe most difficult aspect of hunting trophy whitetails is interpreting deer sign.
Developing this skill will take time and experience. By using a little creativity you can learn to evaluate and eventually exploit the sign that bucks yield in the wake of their travels.Imagine interpreting and processing deer sign as constructing a giant jigsaw puzzle. The wooded terrain and natural food sources of a certain area make up the main body and outer edges of the “puzzle.” The final pieces include rubs, scrapes, trails and bedding areas. Normally the edges of a puzzle are the easiest to identify and arrange. The task becomes more challenging and reveals more of the impending scene as you work towards the center. Gathering bits of information and applying the acquired knowledge will lead to a specific strategy for solving the puzzle. In one case it may be a beautiful mountain vista or prominent landmark. In the other, a trophy buck.I personally focus my attention on finding fresh rubs while on scouting forays. Rubs are one of the few distinguishing pieces of evidence that verifies antlered animals are frequenting a certain locale. From the time their antlers harden in early September until they cast them in late winter bucks will make rubs. Saplings, fence posts, power line poles and a wide variety of scrub brush fall victim to their abuse.
Taking advantage of a buck’s natural tendency to create these spontaneous woodland sculptures is the answer to consistently taking bragging-size bucks during the pre-rut.Scrapes are also an indication that bucks are working an area. Studies have shown that the majority of activity in and around a scrape generally occurs under the cover of darkness. Yearlings and immature bucks will visit scrapes on a regular basis, but mature animals tend to shy away from these locations during daylight hours. For this reason, rubs normally offer a more reliable means of plotting travel patterns than scrapes. However, during a recent hunt in northern Missouri, I witnessed several large bucks visiting a primary scrape at various times of the day, including the first hours of daylight in the morning and the last few hours before sunset in late afternoon. One of the aforementioned bucks sported a massive, bone-white set of antlers whose rack would score somewhere in the high 160s as a 10-point typical. I had definite plans of harvesting this particular animal, but due to a perplexing attack of impatience I wound up shooting a lesser deer only to have the big 10 show up under my stand moments after harvesting the smaller buck.
In this case, I learned that there are simply no absolutes when it comes to bowhunting trophy whitetails. Anything can happen at anytime. An example of this -- as stated previously -- are the many studies that substantiate the frequency of nighttime scraping activity by mature deer. Yet those north Missouri bucks were brazenly working their scrapes during broad daylight without a care in the world. So when pursuing trophy bucks with archery equipment it’s best to keep an open mind for every possible opportunity to be able to capitalize on the habits of the deer in your particular area. This type of mindset is yet another key to outwitting pre-rut whitetails.Search and Enjoy One of the most productive times to search for deer sign is immediately following the bow season. Another is during the spring. In the early stages of spring, the woods appear in basically the same condition as they did during the previous bow season. Rubs, scrapes and trails are exposed and are easily identifiable. This time of the year also offers yet another opportunity to legally harvest the prized headgear of virtually every buck in your hunting area. This highly enjoyable, early spring activity I’m referring to is widely known in the bowhunting ranks as “shed hunting”. Hunting for shed antlers has become one of the fastest growing pastimes of an ever-increasing number of outdoor enthusiasts.
Serious bowhunters, nature lovers and those who seek to profit from these complimentary woodland souvenirs are among the most recognized of today’s burgeoning legion of “bone collectors.” With a formal record book in current production that is solely dedicated to shed antlers, and a separate category that officially recognizes them as stand-alone trophies, the one-time leisure pursuit of a few adventurous individuals has now become an extremely competitive arena.Scouring the woods for these naturally abandoned gems of the whitetail world definitely has its advantages for archers seeking trophy bucks. Finding a single shed -- or if you’re lucky enough -- a matched set of antlers will positively confirm that a certain buck has survived the hunting season. Also, simply Wholesale Extruder Screws Barrels Manufacturers knowing that a particular buck is still alive and well, and is residing in your hunting area on a consistent basis, will significantly increase your odds of killing him next bow season. Yet another reward for your efforts is the beautiful addition that shed antlers make to any trophy room. Attached to the skull plate or displayed on a mantle or laid out on deer hide covered coffee table makes no difference to me. Antlers are eye-popping works of art that are just plain cool. Unfortunately, the exploration of every hunting spot prior to the season is not possible, leaving many pieces of the whitetail puzzle missing or out of place.
