it's so nice when they have staff posted around the waiting area in the station who will not only direct you to your train's gate before it's posted on the signs but will actively ask you which train you're waiting for/where you're going

if i never had to use amtrak again that would be the best day ever
#AMTRAK IS SO FUCKING STUPID#THEY fucked up on a trip i was on a while back and gave me a voucher for it which was great!#but the voucher is apparently ONE USE ONLY???#so if im taking a trip thats less than 300 bucks (which i AM) then basically fuck you you lose the rest of that money#AND THEY DONT MAKE IT CLEAR THAT ITS ONE USE EITHER#so i used it for a 29 dollar ticket. a TWENTY NINE DOLLAR TICKET. when i had 300 bucks to use.#so i LOST 271#i called them and talked to them and they were nice enough to give me a new voucher for the 271 so i didnt lose it#(bc when i asked WHY they have one use only vouchers the guy literally said uhh idk why. so i was like if u cant explain the reason behind#it it literally shouldnt be a rule)#so now i have a 271 voucher and i would like to use it all but one trip isnt 271 so i wanna book multiple trips at once to use it all#BUT THAT IS LIKE IMPOSSIBLE???#THERES LIKE NO FEATURE THAT ALLOWS ME TO BOOK MULTIPLE TRIPS AT ONCE?#so i called AGAIN to ask someone how#and they were like oh we can do it for you!#i was like great! and started going through my travel details and the lady was like cool we have a train at 6am. and i was like ??#the website said theres one at 10:55 i want that one i dont need to be there at 6 am and she was like oh well we cant book that bc its#not an amtrak train its a capital corridor train#LADY WHAT THE HELL#WHY IS THIS SO DIFFICULT#I JUST WANT TO BOOK MY STUPID TRIPS AND NOT LOSE MY MONEY!!!!#needless to say.#i fucking hate amtrak#do not reccomend#drive people the exorbitant gas prices are worth it if it means you dont have to use fucking amtrak sdjflkg#mack rambles

Additional Locomotives for the 20 Railroad heritage fleets
One thing that I should mention is the idea that the heritage fleets of the New York Central, Pennsylvania Railroad, Chesapeake and Ohio, Baltimore and Ohio, Chicago and Northwestern, Milwaukee Road, Burlington Route, Seaboard Air Line, Illinois Central, Gulf Mobile & Ohio, Union Pacific, Northern Pacific, Great Northern, Southern Pacific, Atlantic Coast Line, Santa Fe, Norfolk and Western, Missouri Pacific, Rock Island and Southern Railway have the following diesels as helpers and additional engines, and these diesels would be repainted in the railroads’ paint schemes, and these diesels are…

my dad: “you should come home earlier so you can spend time with your mother”
me, internally: why the fuck would I do that
#shhh sharkie#I’m specifically a) lying to him about where i’m spending the night tonight#and b) spending as little time at home tomorrow as I can before I come back to the city#I have zero desire to spend any quality time with either of my parents rn#I’m driving to nyc to spend the night with my person tonight and sleep over with them#and then finishing the drive to ct tomorrow to drop off the car and then amtrak the fuck out of there#he’s trying to guilt trip me into spending the night in ct instead of nyc but like why would I do that#yeah i’d love to have an uncomfortable evening with a group of passive aggressive people who judge me and my life#and watch a shitty movie i’ll hate and be judged for how many glasses of wine I have#definitely better than getting free drinks at a gourmet restaurant while i wait for my SO to finish up work#and then go smoke/drink and get lovingly railed within an inch of my life#definitely time with my parents is worth more than that 🙄#edit: coming back to this about a month later (2/2) and i kinda do wish i had arrived earlier to say hi to mom but still#more in that like. my parents have this preconceived notion that I hate them but that isn’t true#and i’d like as many opportunities as i can to disprove that#but also my mom is a self-centered narcissist and any slight against her is the worst crime in the world#so i’m okay missing her. but i did still want to see her.#or any of my siblings. it was just my dad and the pets.#which is great! i love how each of the dogs greet everyone#have to deal with Daisy first cause she needs to be Held and tell you she loves you#and then Dolly needs to lick all the moisturizer off your face and be a little potato#and Odie whines and patiently waits his turn but then he gets swaddled with affection#it’s a whole routine i love them all so much#and i miss my girl so much

Postcards from Snagglepuss
Heading back to the motorhome
ABOARD AMTRAK'S JUST-LAUNCHED GREAT RIVER, SOMEWHERE BETWEEN CHICAGO AND WISCONSIN DELLS: "Snagglepuss--?"
"Yes, Huck?"
(This as we were in our coach seats during the journey.)
"So, what exactly did you have in mind between now and Easter Sunday with the motorhome?"
"As in the Easter Parade in Gatlinburg, headed by the Cattanooga Cats even?"
"Obviously."
You could sense as much over the coffee Amtrak manages to serve in such a train as the Great River, giving travellers between Chicago, Milwaukee and the Twin Cities a second rail option alongside the Empire Builder as continues onward to Glacier National Park and the Pacific Northwest--Portland, Seattle even ... this even as the day outside seemed so dreich and dull-looking through Wisconsin.
At any rate, prompting a call to Crazy Claws, our Waterpark Capital contact, reminding him to meet us at the Wisconsin Dells Amtrak station upon arrival--with his remarking that he could just sense that another train was going to arrive in the Dells before too long, adding that he knew where to locate the stored motorhome Huck and I were to pick up.
"Hopefully, CC," remarked I, "you'll be wearing something to cover your hind paws with; ice melting salts, as used on the platform, can cause issues with the foot pads."
Once the train left Portage, we just knew that Wisconsin Dells would be imminent before too long--and how else could it be, even as the train paused briefly to gaze upon the Rocky Islands of the Lower Dells ere the Wisconsin Dells stop was made? And with at least seven or eight other passengers, we decamped from the train and--
"I assume you must be looking for--?" (It was Crazy Claws "himself," standing near a waiting bench on the platform.)
Boy, would it be a surprise, especially following some lunch....
