My apologies if you have talked about this recently, but, as an aspiring author-if-i-ever-manage-to-finish-something-haha-can-you-imagine, I have a question! I discovered Draft2Digital thanks to one of your old posts and it caught my attention very fast because it looked very promising, but lately (as much as I've been able to consult with Tumblr's search, magnificent and very functional as it famously is) you've been mentioning IngramSpark more, so if I may ask! Is D2D still an acceptable platform nowadays, or is it better to go look for other alternatives? Thanks!
Oh, Ingram Spark used to be one of the only options for paperbacks other than Amazon in the US and I am moving AWAY from them because they’re such assholes.
They’re responsible for the price hike in my books and I’m 99.9% certain they’re skimming profit off my retailer discount. They also put the ability to call customer service behind a paywall ($25 per 30 minutes). You can still email them but good luck ever getting a reply. Which is an issue when they send you a box of hardback books covered in binding glue with pages falling out that they still maintain are in sellable condition and won’t issue a refund for 🙃 (yes to anyone who has been paying attention it’s been 2+ years and I’m still fighting with them over that)
Yeah, no. I’ll be a d2d author going forward. They’ve got the same global market reach as Ingram, as well as recently merged with Gardners in the UK (a big distributor)
Plus it means I can do my ebook, paperback and audio all from one place. (Findaway is partnered with d2d)
I’ll still keep Amazon separate, but that's because Amazon pays better royalties for direct uploads. Everything else I’m using d2d.
Fuck Ingram. They’re never getting another direct penny from me 😅

Guide to Watch TGCF Donghua Season 2
Tumblr media
With the new season of the Tian Guan Ci Fu/Heaven Official's Blessing donghua finally releasing soon, I wanted to make a post explaining the different ways fans can watch and support it! Things have changed since season 1, so my old guide is no longer relevant apart from the infographics on how to subscribe to Bilibili CN (and the YouTube channel)!
And to be upfront: the main sites that are going to be broadcasting the donghua have been very sparse with information. I fully expect that we will have to wait until after the first episode releases to know all the details, so while I am making this guide to help people right now, things might change! Please keep that in mind and stay patient! I will post any important updates in the replies as I can!
Additionally, because of copyright/licensing, different sites are going to work in different regions. I do not know with 100% certainty what is going to work in a particular country. There's gonna be some trial and error!
So the main options we have for season 2 are:
Crunchyroll
Sub price: $9.99 USD per month for basic (local prices may vary)
Regions: Americas, Europe, Africa, Middle East, Oceania.
Pros: Easy to subscribe to if available in your region.
Cons: Unlikely for true simulcast so it'll be a bit delayed.
Link to main site (season 2 listing not up yet)
For app: download via App Store/Google Play Store.
Bilibili. tv (EN site/app)
Sub price: $4.99 USD per month (local prices may vary)
Regions: Southeast Asia only.
Pros: Airs earlier than Crunchyroll. Interface is in English.
Cons: If you want to watch it outside of SEA, you'll need a VPN.
Link to Season 2 on website
For app: download via APK link on website if you are outside of SEA. Otherwise use App Store/Google Play Store.
Bilibili YouTube Channel
Sub price: $4.99/$5.99 USD per month (local prices may vary)
Regions: Many -- EXCEPT Japan, South Korea, the Americas, UK, Australia, New Zealand.
Pros: Easy to subscribe if available in your region.
Cons: If you want to watch it from the regions listed above, you'll need a VPN.
Link to channel
It's the youtube app....
Bilibili. com (CN site/app)
Sub price: $9.99 USD for 3 months
Regions: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Pros: If they're gonna air season 2, then they might be the source broadcast if the EN site isn't. Also probably cheapest for those abroad.
Cons: Chinese interface may be intimidating. Not 100% sure if it'll air as normal.
Link to Season 2 on website
For app: download via App Store/Google Play Store.
(NOTE: If you are in Japan, it will be available on WOWOW. If you are in South Korea, it will be available on Laftel.)
F.A.Q.s
🔹What is the release date/time? Bilibili EN has announced it as 20:00 GMT+8 on October 18th. If it releases on Bilibili CN, it'll probably be the same time. Crunchyroll has stated October 18th, but has not yet announced a time as of the posting this guide. I checked. Japan and South Korea have their own release times, so please consult the relevant broadcasters!
🔹Can I watch it on Netflix/Amazon Prime/etc? These streaming services will likely only have it after the whole season concludes, and with a significant delay. For reference, it took several months after finishing for season 1 to be released on Netflix.
🔹Which platform should I choose? Whichever one you can actually access, and feel most comfortable using!
🔹When should I subscribe? Personally, I'll be waiting until the last day before release, just to make sure I have the most information possible. However, I'm sure the idea of doing that makes many people nervous, so... yeah. Whenever is convenient for you!
🔹Which one will have the donghua the quickest/earliest? Probably Bilibili CN & Bilibili EN. I suspect they'll simulcast with each other. I cannot be 100% certain about anything though, because of limited info! For season 1, YouTube and Funimation (now Crunchyroll) were delayed, and it's hard to say if they'll be better this time or not.
🔹Do I need a VPN for Bilibili EN or their YT channel? If you are outside of SEA, yes.
🔹Do I need a VPN for Bilibili CN? Probably not, unless you are in a country that restricts access to CN sites and apps (like India).
🔹Which VPN should I use? This will be up to you! It's best to research what the different options are, and what will work for your needs!
🔹How will I know I'll be able to watch season 2 from my region? The most surefire way is to subscribe to a platform that has officially announced to be serving your region (e.g. Crunchyroll for the Americas). Unofficially, if you can watch the latest trailer and other promo videos on your chosen platform, then there's a good chance you're okay! The exception to this is the YouTube channel, which has some of the trailers public, but has all of season 1 unavailable if you aren't in the right region.... Additionally, be mindful, because even if you're able to see season 1, season 2 might still be region-locked on certain platforms. (E.g. you can watch all of season 1 via Bilibili EN if you're from the USA no problem. But you can't access season 2 without a VPN to a SEA server.)
🔹What languages are going to be available and will there be English subtitles? While dubs for multiple languages have been confirmed, I'm unsure if any of these will be available on release. It'll likely be offered only in Chinese first. For season 1, there were hardcoded CN & EN subtitles for Bilibili on release. Funimation re-subbed the episodes (EN) for their own release, and Crunchyroll will probably do the same.
🔹I watched it on Funimation last time, can I watch it through them this time? No, they were absorbed (in some capacity idk) by Crunchyroll. So they are not distributing season 2 of TGCF, only Crunchyroll is.
🔹Is season 2 actually available in China and thus on Bilibili CN? Yes and no! As long as you are not in mainland China, it seems you will have access to season 2 through Bilibili CN. All promo materials and trailers seem to be available to us, which is a good sign! (They are not available for mainlanders, but mainland fans are able to watch via HK/Macau versions apparently.)
🔹Hopeful that it will be available, I would like to watch it via Bilibili CN, so how do I sign up and subscribe? To make an account, consult this reddit post. To subscribe, please consult the guide below! It's a little old (made it for season 1) but still works pretty much the same.

sam! you mentioned having pink hair - do you do it yourself or get it professionally done? if the former, what dye do you use? thanks adhd dad
Yes! I do it myself -- I use Punky Colour, a UK brand that comes in little half-pint pots. If you're in the US you can get it from Amazon, but they also sell it at a lot of Ulta stores in the hair dye section, or a comparable brand like it. It's not that it's particularly better than any other dye brand, but if you have short hair it's multiple re-dyes in a single resealable package; artificial colors like pink don't last as long, generally speaking, so you need to re-dye fairly frequently. With pink I do it about once every two weeks, with blue or green it's basically once a week. I get one initial dye and four or five re-dyes out of a pot of Punky, and it's relatively inexpensive. (For folks who are about to recommend Overtone as a color-conditioner, feel free to talk about it, but I tried it and wasn't impressed -- as far as I could tell it didn't do anything.)
If you need to bleach before dyeing and/or have never dyed before, I would recommend starting out with a Splat kit. The Splat brand is sold in most grocery/drugstores, and often it comes as a full kit -- you get bleach, post-bleach conditioner, and a single application of dye, all in one package. It looks like something a fifteen-year-old would shoplift, but I can't deny that it works. Once you've worked with Splat once or twice, you'll have a good idea of how dye works with your hair and can branch out.
I've looked into getting it done at a salon several times, but every time I ask about it they want me to do a consultation with a colorist, which sounds like awkwardly wasted time when I know what I want, and generally they also try to convince me I should go for something more "natural". I'd take that somewhat amiss if I didn't know I look awesome with pink hair, which I know because I get tons of compliments from strangers when I have it. Lately I've found men in particular will compliment it and then ask me how/where I had it done -- I think there are a lot of men who would love to have brightly colored hair but don't know where to start. I come across as safe to ask because I don't have a lot of other...IDK what you'd call it, even, signifiers of something? I have no piercings or ink and I dress like I'm an accountant on vacation, so I think I seem like someone who won't scoff at them for not knowing.
Good luck! I hope you have fun with it. I definitely enjoy putting a little splash of color out in the world, especially in winter when everything's a bit grim.

Mutual Aid Request! - Help me get enough together for a basic rollator!
So, to preface for those who don’t know me: I’m Aster, a 31 year old fandom fiend who’s also disabled and chronically ill. Lately, my spinal condition, Degenerative Disc Disease, has gotten markedly worse. I’m currently on a morphine derivative medication alongside my usual meds and am still finding it hard to walk and do stuff even within the house. I am lucky in that I live in a bungalow already but I am low on funds and could really do with the extra support a rollator would give me over the walking stick I’m currently hobbling about with. I don’t need a fancy one, just a basic folding one with a seat big enough for me. Looking on Amazon I’m looking at around £150 for one to suit my weight, but I might be able to get one more affordably if I can find a UK based VAT exempt shop which has one to fit me. I am due for an MRI and a referral to my consultant surgeon, and am waiting on those.
If you can afford to throw some coins my way then it’d be really appreciated! I’m on benefits and can’t work at all, even from home. So I’m stuck in painful limbo until I can afford a rollator really, as it stands I can’t even get to the toilet without a helping hand and having no independence is killing me.
You can donate via my ko-fi or alternatively ask for my PayPal link.
£000/£150

Just days after people gleefully posted their Spotify Wrapped, bad news came for the music streaming giant. Spotify announced today that it would cut 17 percent of its workforce, a chunk that equates to an estimated 1,500 people. It’s the third time the world’s largest music streamer has cut jobs this year.
The news came after Spotify posted its first profitable quarter since 2021. In a memo to staff, CEO Daniel Ek said the company had expanded its workforce and offerings significantly throughout 2020 and 2021, thanks to lower-cost capital, but is now bumping up against the same problems startups across industries are facing, like high capital costs and slowed economic growth.
Ek said the cuts may seem “surprisingly large given the recent positive earnings report and our performance,” but due to “the gap between our financial goal state and our current operational costs,” Spotify would take “substantial action.”
Despite its popularity (Spotify held 30 percent of the music streaming market by late 2022), the company has long struggled to turn consistent profits. The layoffs wrap up a bad year: Spotify cut 6 percent of its workforce last January, followed by another 2 percent in June as it slimmed down its podcasting business. Even as the world’s most recognizable music streaming service, Spotify is plagued by an unreliable business model, one in which record companies sit back and rake in royalty payments while artists can struggle to bring in enough cash.
“Investors are increasingly impatient in 2023 for tech firms to start making money,” says Phil Bird, head of rights and royalties at the software development company Vistex. Spotify isn’t alone—tech companies have slashed jobs throughout the year, with more than 250,000 people losing jobs worldwide in 2023, according to layoffs.fyi, a site that tracks job cuts in tech.
Many major tech companies that overhired during the pandemic have taken steps to rightsize—and that’s what Ek says Spotify is doing now. But Spotify’s high cost to license music adds to its financial strain. “The cost of doing business is huge for streaming companies,” Bird says.
Spotify gained momentum in the third quarter of 2023, earning €32 million ($34.6 million) in operating income. It now has 226 million subscribers and 574 million monthly users. “On the surface, it looks great,” says Simon Dyson, senior principal analyst of music and digital audio at consultancy firm Omdia. “It’s [those] nagging costs that it can’t get on top of.”
Spotify and the recording industry have a deeply entwined and sticky relationship: Spotify is seen by some as a savior of the music industry, which flailed after Napster upended music downloading in 1999, but artists earn wildly different incomes based on how Spotify pays. According to a calculation from Billboard, Taylor Swift may have earned nearly $100 million from streaming on Spotify so far this year. Smaller artists earn far less, and music streaming models have long been accused of exploiting them.
Like Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music are each charging $10.99 per month for premium subscriptions, and each give access to 100 million songs. But unlike Spotify, Apple and Amazon have massive streams of revenue elsewhere to fall back on. So Spotify has spent the past few years looking for that standout content. It spent more than $1 billion building its podcast world and acquiring exclusive deals to shows like The Joe Rogan Experience. This fall, it began offering paying subscribers in the UK and Australia free audiobook access for 15 hours each month.
The music streaming fight isn’t like the streaming wars, where Max, Netflix, Hulu, and others can each lure in subscribers with a combination of classic and original movies and shows. If Spotify were to charge more for music (it already increased monthly prices from $9.99 to 10.99 in the US this summer), it would risk losing people to comparable services, where people can find the same songs. But unless it can convince people to pay more for music, it might continue to struggle.
“It’s too cheap,” says Dyson. “To have access to every single piece of music that’s ever been released—and ever will be released—for $10 a month is just astounding.” The same is true of Spotify today as was true when it was founded 17 years ago: It’s a business that’s good for listeners and labels but bad for both streamers and artists.

A UK company is mining gold in the Brazilian Amazon on disputed land
Incomplete consultations with Indigenous communities and disputes over land ownership raise questions over Serabi Gold's Coringa mine.
Tumblr media
A British company is mining gold in the Amazon without the permission of the federal land agency, on disputed land, with licences contested by state agencies, and before a nearby Indigenous community has properly been consulted, an investigation by Unearthed and partners has found.
Serabi Gold, which is listed on London’s AIM and the Toronto stock exchanges, has been blasting open 4.5m wide tunnels at the Coringa (Joker) site in Pará state, and last year began trucking ore for processing at a second mine it owns 120 miles away.
But Coringa is sited inside a sustainable farming settlement, owned by federal land reform agency Incra, which told Unearthed it has not authorised the mining. And an official report from Incra seen by Unearthed says that the mine was originally developed through a deal with alleged land grabbers.
Further ambiguity surrounds licences at the Coringa site: a Brazil high court ruled in 2021 that no more licences should be given until an Indigenous impact study is complete, but last year two government agencies renewed existing licences anyway.
In a vulnerable region defined by tension between resource extraction and forest conservation, a tangle of contradictory rulings from different official bodies and complexities over Amazon land tenure has raised questions over whether the mine operation should be suspended.

Part 3 Entertainment - Books Part 2
I finally(!) learned about Stuff Your Kindle Day (SYKD), which is a bit of a misnomer as it's
Not amazon- or kindle-exclusive
Multiple times throughout the year
but it's a day where indie publishers/author promo groups all sell free books at once, adding up to dozens or hundreds (and sometimes thousands) of free books at a time, for a single day. If you were thinking about getting some ebooks to help pass the time at consults/after surgery, it wouldn't take very many out of those large number of free books to have plenty of reading material. I've been able to confirm that, outside of the US, this is also available in Canada, the UK, and Australia. Other countries may be participating as well, but I'm struggling to confirm one way or another, and the same book may not be free in all regions.
It's worth mentioning that Kindle, Apple, Nook, and Kobo all have free apps if you don't have an ereader (or would rather use a tablet than have a dedicated ereader), and that all of these storefronts are, to my knowledge, participants in all of these events. I will say that I was initially hesitant to get an ereader and waited a long time to get one, but I don't regret it. I have been, in particular, VERY vocal in recommending them to people who struggle to read paper books because you can change the font/font size/margin to make them more accessible, including using the OpenDyslexia font.
SYKD originally was romance-exclusive, and the "official" STKD events are still heavily romance-focused, but there are other publishers and groups coordinating similar, smaller events in other genres ("Book Blast" seems to be the current popular name for discount events not associated with the original group running SYKD).
If you know me at all, I am a pretty prolific category romance reader (especially at places like the doctor's office, where a romance novel is a nice time-waster that doesn't require wifi and allows me to not be fully immersed while I listen for my name to be called), so I'm quite excited for the official announcement for STKD, likely happening in March. In 2023, for some measure of comparison, SYKD happened on March 31, June 30, September 20, and December 27.
Romance Bookworms is the home of the "original" SYKD and allows you to sign up for email alerts (or substack) when they announce the dates for 2024, which are a closely guarded secret. SYKD is the largest of events by FAR with about 2,000 books available in the December 2023 event. Romance is the primary genre, but other books in other genres are free for SYKD as well. Several sources indicate that Romance Bookworms has sections on their SYKD listings specifically for BIPOC authors and for books that feature LGBTQ+ protagonists.
Romance Book Lovers is an unrelated group that is hosting a Romance Book Blast, with the next listed date as April 23.
The Cozy Mystery Book Club has coordinated several Cozy Mystery Book Blasts in the past, including in January of 2024, with the next event listed publicly as April 25.
Witchy Bookworms coordinates the Witchy Book Blast, which ran last on January 27 and already has the next date listed publicly as April 27.
Fantasy Book Dragons just ran their first "Stuff Your Kindle with Fantasy" event in January and have mentioned plans for another event in June with no date announced yet.
YA Bookworms runs a similar YA-focused event, the last one I can find info on happened on October 7. They also have a substack.
Terrify Your Tablet seems to run on October 31 only each year (This is the same event as Spook Your Kindle; they changed the name to clarify that it's not amazon-exclusive).
Thriller Blast appears to be a similar event for mystery, suspense, and thriller books, with a similar hook of waiting on an email announcement for dates and no clear indication on the landing page when the last event was held. I also wasn't able to confirm anyone participating it in via reddit, or anywhere else, so your guess is as good as mine.
Romance Audiobookworms also runs a similar event for audiobooks, Stuff Your Earbuds, with an event announced for spring but the date still unannounced, just like SYKD. This is still a relatively new event, unlike SYKD.
There's a lot of whining online about the quality of the books available for these events (especially SYKD, which I'm sure is unrelated to the fact that it's mostly romance and the general feelings most people have about romance as a genre), but the fact of the matter is that books available on kindle, especially for free, vary wildly in quality all the time no matter what. I've quit reading a lot of duds in the year I've owned an ereader, but I've read a lot of things I liked, too, and I assume the offerings for these events are a similar mixed bag.
Considering how many new events have cropped up in the past 18 months or so, I'll be excited to see in any new author groups decide to run similar promotions in the future or whether more groups decide to align with SYKD.

July Newsletter: Discounts, new Book of Judges and more
We’ve got news on the new edition of Judges, discounts, blogs and more this month
New Judges with more pages!
In September, we will be officially releasing the new version of The Book of Judges. This new edition features the NIV translation but also even more pages! Now, I know what you’re thinking but we didn’t add anything to the biblical text, we spread the existing panels over more pages making it so the pages are not so cramped and the illustrations are larger, we also lightened up the images as our first edition was very dark.
In this example below, the top left page is the original page, which becomes three pages in the new edition including two new panels and verse reference numbers in the corners.
If you can’t wait until September you can preorder it via the UK online shop and pay postage to your location and you’ll receive it before the official release. (Note: Kickstarter Backers of Song of Songs who added Judges will get this new version)
The new Judges graphic novel was showcased at the American Library Association Convention of over 10,000 librarians last month and this month will be at the Christian Product Expo in Kentucky.
Discount!
If you are ordering books direct from us (via the UK online shop), you can now get a discount when you spend £50+ you’ll get 25% off! Just enter the discount code FIFTYQUIDPLUS at checkout. Includes books, t-shirts and digital items!
(T&Cs: Offer works on direct purchases from the UK, not available on US and Canada domestic delivery which is handled by our distributors).
Patreon Hangout
On Saturday 15th July, we’ll have one of our Patreon Hangouts, a Zoom call between myself, some of the team and our patrons will be there to chat, answer questions and connect. The talk will likely be around the new title The Book of Acts which has started production but won’t be Kickstarted until next year. To get the inside scoop, see pages before anyone else and join us at the hangout, become a patron today:
The Gathering
We had a great time at the Gathering in June despite nearly melting in the sun. I did some sword training and we saw dozens of men make a first-time commitment or recommitment to Christ on the weekend. Welcome those that joined the newsletter at the event.
Blogs
I wrote a couple of blogs on the research I’ve been doing recently, I showed the top one to Dr. Mark Woolmer (our history consultant and history lecturer) and he said he’d have given me a First for the essay if it had been submitted in his class which made me happy
In this blog, I explore the question of whether the Golden Calf of Exodus was likely a statue of an Apis Bull?
https://www.wordforwordbiblecomic.com/blog/was-the-golden-calf-an-apis-bull
In this blog, I ask if Moses was tall.
https://www.wordforwordbiblecomic.com/blog/wasmosestall
Kickstarter Update
The creation of the Song of Songs is complete and the digital copies will be sent out to you very soon. They've had their first round of proofreading and corrections are being added. Once the second round of proofreading is complete will be sending it out, before the end of this month.
They'll also be heading to the printers in the next month or so in good time for delivery to backers by the end of November (or before). They will be released in shops in March 2024.
Prayer
Books in libraries: As you saw above our book was featured at the ALA con. Please pray with us that libraries really discover the benefits of the Word for Word Bible Comic and decide to stock them all across the USA. Spanish editions: We have some potential leads to getting distribution of our Spanish editions in Latin America and Europe. Please pray we can get these books into the hands of Spanish speakers very soon!
Technical issue: We have had some trouble with the ISBN registration on Amazon and other places for the new books. Some progress has been made since last time but please pray this is miraculously sorted out very soon so it does not hamper sales.

Re: your insomnia poll — You could try melatonin gummies or CBD gummies (sans THC) to help you sleep better. [I’m not a doctor, so consider consulting with one before buying and trying anything.]
Hmm, thanks for helping but I looked up what you suggested and I think it says those are illegal to sell in shops in the UK and they're prescription only? And yet it looks like you can still buy them on Amazon tho which is a bit confusing but ok
I'd rather not have to go and get a doctor prescribe it to me cuz of loads of reasons like it's more likely my family will find out that way and I've never been to the doctor on my own before and stuff-
I think what I might do is go into town on Monday and see if anything is sold in shops since I'm sure I asked my school nurse about them once and he said you could get some over the counter, but I'll probably go to the doctor as a last resort if I can't find anything over the counter :)
Feel like buying it off Amazon will also raise questions and cba to have it delivered to one of those Amazon delivery box places. Plus going to a shop in person I can ask about what they recommend n stuff too
Thank you for recommending tho, I rly appreciate it!!! ^^ I checked out your blog and I like your BBC Ghosts stuff too mate :)

O cardo and Next

Ocado and Next cut sick pay for unvaccinated isolating staff
Ocado and Next have cut sick pay for unvaccinated staff that must self-isolate because of Covid exposure, the BBC has learned.
Both retailers will continue to pay full sick pay to unvaccinated workers if they test positive for the virus.
Furniture giant Ikea is also among employers making similar moves, as staff absences rise.
Next said it was an "emotive topic" but that it had to balance staff and shareholder needs.
It is unclear when next made the change but it is believed to have been recent.
Online grocer Ocado confirmed on Thursday that it had adopted the same policy as Next this week.
Next currently pays store sales consultants and stock assistants between £6.55 and £9.21 an hour and warehouse operatives between £9.30 and £11.26 an hour many business listings.
But unvaccinated workers who are required to isolate could now receive as little as £96.35 a week - the Statutory Sick Pay minimum - unless there are mitigating circumstances.
· Who needs to self-isolate now and for how long?
·Ikea cuts sick pay for some unvaccinated staff
·Covid staff shortages will continue into New Year
·How can I get my booster jab?
Last month, official self-isolation guidance was relaxed for people who have been jabbed, meaning they do not need to isolate if they have been exposed to a positive case.
But there was no change to the guidance for unvaccinated close contacts, who must still self-isolate for 10 full days after their date of exposure.
What are your sick pay rights?
Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) is the minimum amount employers must pay, but some employers offer more than SSP - this is normally known as a company or contractual sick pay.
Beth Hale, the partner at employment law firm CM Murray, said claims of direct discrimination due to this kind of sick pay policy were unlikely to succeed as being opposed to vaccination was "unlikely to be a protected belief for the purposes of the Equality Act."
"While the policy may have a disproportionate impact on those from certain ethnic or religious groups (which could give rise to a claim for indirect discrimination), an employer may well be able to justify the policy on the basis of their legitimate business needs," she added.
She said where employers are struggling with significant staff absences because of the large case numbers, it "seemed reasonable" that they may want to take steps to encourage vaccination amongst their workforce in this way.
But she added that employers need to be "careful that policies are communicated carefully and sensitively" to avoid employee relations issues.
Many companies, including next, faced labour shortages in 2021 and some are now are seeing mass absences due to the more infectious Omicron Covid strain.
This week it emerged that Ikea, which employs about 10,000 people in the UK, had changed its policy on unvaccinated staff that have been exposed to coronavirus.
Sick pay cuts will also be implemented at Wessex Water and in the US several major companies have started penalizing un-jabbed workers.
However, the major UK supermarkets and Amazon told the BBC their policies had not changed.
NeXT’s move comes days after it said it was putting up its prices to offset higher wage and manufacturing costs.
The retailer said prices for its spring and summer clothing and homeware ranges would climb by 3.7% from a year earlier, while it expects a 6% rise for autumn and winter goods.
The company forecasts full-year sales to rise by 7% overall, but it warned it could face a tougher trading environment in 2022 given the financial pressures facing households, such as higher energy bills.
In October last year, Next boss Lord Wolfson said the retailer had struggled with labour shortages because workers were not available in the places needed and seasonal workers had proved difficult to recruit.
The executive, who supported Brexit, said the problem could be solved by companies hiring overseas workers and paying “visa tax" business listings.
Ikea cuts sick pay for unvaccinated staff forced to self-isolate
Ikea has cut sick pay for unvaccinated staff that needs to self-isolate because of Covid exposure and in some cases for workers who test positive.
The retail giant acknowledged it was an "emotive topic" but said its policy had to evolve with changing circumstances.
From this week, sick pay cuts will be implemented at Wessex Water and in the US several major companies have started penalizing unjabbed workers.
It comes as firms struggle with mass staff absences and rising costs.
At Ikea unvaccinated workers, who do not have mitigating circumstances, who test positive will be paid in line with company sick pay.
Unvaccinated workers, without mitigating circumstances and required to isolate owing to being identified as close contact, could now receive as little as £96.35 a week - the Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) minimum.
Self-isolation guidance for people who have been jabbed was relaxed last month. However, there was no change to the guidance for unvaccinated people who come into contact with positive cases, and who must still self-isolate for 10 full days after their date of exposure to the virus.
·Covid staff shortages will continue into New Year
·Ikea to raise prices as supply problems bite
Average wages at Ikea are between about £400 and £450, depending on location and, as is the case at many companies, staff gets enhanced sick pay. The move was first reported by the Mail on Sunday.
Ikea, which employs about 10,000 people in the UK, said in a statement: "Fully vaccinated co-workers or those that are unvaccinated owing to mitigating circumstances which, for example, could include pregnancy or other medical grounds, will receive full pay.
"Unvaccinated co-workers without mitigating circumstances that test positive with Covid will be paid full company sick pay in line with our company absence policy free business listings.
"Unvaccinated co-workers without mitigating circumstances who have been identified as close contacts of a positive case will be paid Statutory Sick Pay."
In England, people who are vaccinated with at least two doses need not self-isolate if they have been in close contact with someone infected with Covid. Unvaccinated people contacted through the government's test-and-trace system must still isolate by law.
Many companies complained of labour shortages throughout 2021, and now are seeing mass absences due to the more infectious Omicron Covid strain.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson repeated on Monday that the data continued to show those people most seriously affected by Omicron remained unvaccinated.
Wessex Water's sick pay rule change comes into force this week.
Any employee without at least one Covid-19 vaccination - who does not have a valid medical reason - or does not have a confirmed vaccination appointment, will get only statutory sick pay if required to self-isolate due to close contact with someone testing positive.
A Wessex Water spokesperson said absences have soared this year: "The vast majority of our workforce has been vaccinated and it's important as a company providing essential services with key worker employees, the remainder gets vaccinated to protect themselves, customers, and their colleagues.
"Absences due to Covid have doubled in the last week, so we need everyone to be available so we can continue to provide uninterrupted essential water and sewerage services."
Legal risks
The company said that throughout the pandemic it had not furloughed staff and those self-isolating had received full payment.
Last year, supermarket Morrisons cut sick pay terms, while several companies, including banking giant Citigroup, introduced a "no jab, no job" policy. Delta Airlines imposed a surcharge on unvaccinated staff members of its healthcare plan.
Ben Willmott, head of public policy at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), told the BBC there were pros and cons with changing sick pay terms for certain workers.
It could encourage staff to get vaccinated, but others might be less likely to test themselves or self-isolate because they could not afford time off work at the statutory rate of about £96.
His organization's official guidance was not to differentiate between employees, as the consequences could be complex and there were potential legal problems.
"You would have to manage it on a case-by-case basis because of legal risks," Mr Willmott said.
Earlier this month, David Josephs, boss of food importer and retailer All Greens, told the BBC that staff at some firms was ignoring Covid rules for financial reasons.
"We know that in our sector a lot of staff does not get paid sick pay. Ours do - but staff that are on limited contracts or on minimum wage cannot afford to be off work," he said.
Employment lawyer Sarah Ozanne, of CMS, also warned of complex legal issues and said striking the right balance was difficult.
"This action [by Ikea] seems more of a reaction to staff shortages and how to manage them than any intended 'discrimination' of the unvaccinated," she said.
"But employers should consider whether their actions are proportionate as a means of achieving the aim of getting employees back into work."
