Hi 👋 going to be greedy and ask multiple 😊
Bending au, book of love, Kya and Katara
💚💙
No problem dear 😍
Bending AU is a crossover in which several characters from Arcane, especially Grayson, exist in avatar-verse. Grayson is of course an earth bender who works for the RCPD. In fact, she’s a chief between Toph and Lin. And she has a relationship with Kya. At first it’s just a sporadic fling thing, but they really like each other and it turns to fwb. Kya even stays in the city for a while. There are two possible scenarios I see happening from then on: 1. They start dating, but eventually break up; 2. They stay together and manage to work around a long distance relationship.
Book Of Love is a songfic and features scenes from all my otps. Still in the early planning stages with this one, but it’s centred around musical settings - especially dancing but also concerts etc. Mel is playing the cello for Grayson; Kya/Lin dancing at the beach; Minerva/Poppy wedding dance...
Kya and Katara is about the two of them bonding over love stories. I always wanted to explore a storyline in which Katara only begins talking to Kya about romance and women at a later stage in life. It's not that she didn't support or accept her sexuality, but during Kya's youth she was more neutral maybe even passive, about it. This thought is based on what Tonraq says to Korra in Turf Wars, about the SWT people preferring not to talk about (homo)sexuality. Katara is different of course, but this is about me exploring different kinds of different. So, maybe there was a time in Kya's youth when their connection wasn't as strong - because, honestly, Kya was a handful as a teenager, and talking to her Mum wasn’t always high on the list - and before it could change Kya left and Katara never found a way to approach the topic with her - also because Kya didn't bring many women back home with her and even when they settle at SWT she keeps her romantic life to herself pretty much, Katara only notices things from afar. But then one day after Korra's training they sit together and start talking. Katara is reminiscing about her childhood adventures after discovering Aang and Kya dares to make a remark about how many boys she was smitten with and vice versa and suddenly Katara starts asking her about her affairs and it's not at all as awkward as either would've assumed. And of course this will lead to Kya asking:
"Why did you never talk to me like this when I was younger? You did with Bumi, even Tenzin, a little. Why not me? Did I make you uncomfortable?"to which Katara reacted with: "NO! My sweet girl, never! I just... I felt like I might be making you uncomfortable. If you remember we butted heads quite often back then. And I just didn't know how to talk to you, I felt ashamed by it to be honest. Especially since your father had such an easy time with the subject. Then you were gone and it seemed like you didn't want me to know much about you and your women-" "But only because I thought you'd be displeased! There were quite a few, you know..." "Never, sweetling! It isn't the path I chose, but it is still a good path. Your right path." PAUSE Kya: "Do you ever regret choosing your path?" "Hm, no. Of course I wonder from time to time what else I could have been. But I would always want my path to end with your father by my side."

I have this base for I fic I plan on writing soon and for some reason I just find it so funny so y'all get a sneak peak for it.
Basically instead of killing Kya, she gets taken, locked in prison until they figure out she's not a water bender, so they send her as a servant to the palace and for some reason she gets assigned to Ozai's children. This is all like 6 months to a year before Ursa's banished, so Kya being the queen she is has been planning an escape until she gets that all happens the she's like "apparently I have two more children, cool."
Kya's the only one that's actually able to get Azula to behave and teach the girl just a bit of empathy, so Ozai being a terrible parent tries to banish her as well but since she's Kya, she knew he assisted in Azulon's death, so she's just constantly blackmailing him into letting her keep raising his children. Zuko, sadly still ends up banished only because Kya (and Azula who somewhat cares about her brother) weren't told about the whole thing so they didn't know till after.
Flashforward to after Zuko joins the Gaang (IDK how all the plot points fit in there, but they do somehow). Maybe like just after the Boiling Rock, Hakoda says something about Kya and Zuko has a full body reaction because "hey isn't that the nice lady that made me and azula actually get along?" So him and Katara dip for the night, sneak into the Fire Nation and find Kya only for her to refuse to leave. (She's honestly fine here, she's doing so much behind the scenes to work on ending the war that it'd be a shame to leave so suddenly.)
War ends and all that good stuff. Kya's reunited with Hakoda and Bato (they have some peak dumbass moments there, like "wait, what do you mean you married both of us.'") Really this was just an excuse for a 'Kya adopts Azula' fic since there are already so many of Hakoda adopting Zuko, so Azula needs some love too.

Oh Almighty Dilf Lord share your thoughts about Kyakoda + Kya topping
*puts on reading glasses, lights pipe, and sits back in leather armchair near the fireplace*
Well, kiddo, if you ask me, there may not be a more underappreciated ship in ATLA than Kyakoda. Yes, in canon there’s a whole lot of implicit angst, and there isn’t too much for fic writers to work with. But since when does this fandom care about canon??? 😤 Or need lots of material to write a minor character??? If you ask me, ‘Kya Lives’ AUs are so underdone, and I love modern AUs which feature Kyakoda! I mean, doesn’t it just sell itself?? We’re talking about a ship with Hakoda, whose name appears under the dictionary definition for Daddy, and Kya, who…hey, ya know what, let’s talk about Kya actually! 😏
For original watchers of the show, Katara was pretty easy material for a cartoon character crush. But now that the fandom is older…well, it would make some sense for us to give her mom some attention too, huh? 😝 And she’s more than just an aged-up carbon copy of Katara—we’re talking about the woman who raised the Meat and Sarcasm Guy himself! If you ask me, all that sass and eccentricity and corny humor is something Sokka shared with his mom, which makes her character sooooooo much more fun! 🤌 Kya’s banter with Hakoda has to be top-tier—he laughs at her awful puns, she teases him about his hyper-methodical planning, and the shenanigans they get into are absolutely legendary, as both kids and adults. 🙌
[Not-very-SFW below the cut]
And speaking of shenanigans…let’s not forget that Sokka and Katara were born one year apart. Their parents had back-to-back babies, so I think Kyakoda’s friskiness speaks for itself. 😎 I mean, is it all that shocking, though? How else are they supposed to spend those cold South Pole winters? That’s months huddled up indoors together…which makes for plenty of time to get…creative. 😉
I tend to bounce back and forth between sub!Kya and dom!Kya—but I always imagine her as a tease. 😛 Whether it’s in the middle of an important meeting with SWT elders or just in the middle of the night, her hands tend to find their way into Hakoda’s pants—and after eating greasy seal jerky during dinner, she is very deliberate in the way she licks her fingers clean. It’s partly because she loves getting a rise out of her chief, and partly because she doesn’t exactly mind the mild ‘punishment’ that follows when they’re alone again. On principle, Hakoda is against serious corporeal punishment…but if his wife is being a little bratty and wants a gentle spanking while he takes her from behind, who is he to deny her? 😜
When Kya is on top, though, she prefers to make sure the chief keeps his hands to himself. Could he snap the leather ties that she uses to bind his wrists if he really wanted to? For sure, but after a long day hunting or fishing or doing Miscellaneous Chief Things, he’s a bit tired, and Kya has a relatively easy time enforcing her “look-don’t-touch” policy while she rides him. He’s the leader of the village with oodles of responsibility, so making him helpless enough that he can’t even touch his wife’s boobs is actually surprisingly cathartic. On the occasions when Kya’s really feeling in charge, she’ll bind his wrists and use her mouth to edge him, and she knows his body well enough to drag it out for about as long as she wants. And when he’s done, she’ll just park her booty right on that ruggedly handsome face of his so he can return the favor.
As for their other kinks, I totally hc that they’d be into body worship. Life in the South Pole may be rough, but that also means they’re in solid shape, too. After Hakoda shows up in the doorway just in time to whack Yon Rha and save his wife, he spends that night going over every inch of her skin.
And this isn’t a kink, exactly, but the “Tui and La Position,” exclusive to the Water Tribe (before Sokka introduces it to Kyoshi Island), is something Kyakoda would definitely love to do. Look at those two koi fish and how they’re swimming together, and you’ll realize what position I’m talking about. 😏 It’s not a bad way to keep quiet by keeping your mouth busy when you’re living in a small, close-knit village.
That’s all the rambling I have for you today!! Thank you so much for the ask—and I hope you enjoyed the answer!! 😉

I think tumblr may have eaten an ask I sent, if not then pls ignore this: what’s your take on the trauma of Sokka and Katara having grown up where their mother was murdered?? (We don’t really get much info about how the SWT lives, so I’m assuming they’re not semi-nomadic for this ask.) Like first you’re too late to save your mother—you have to bear that weight—but she was murdered at home so then you just have to, like, keep living where she died; you can’t just avoid the part of the village where it happened. That had to have messed them both up so much.
genuinely not something i’ve thought about before!! i think it’s actually in the text that the only nomads are the airbenders, and sokka and katara's village is initially surrounded by a wall, kinda like the nwt, so i suppose saying katara and sokka lived in the same household where their mother was brutally murdered is a correct assumption to make. which is not very nice.
i think all around the post-kya’s death pre-hakoda’s departure era is a lot to take in for both of them, not just the fact that the place in which their mom died is the middle of their living room but also the fact that they have never lived through a raid themselves which is extremely different from hearing it from other people, the fact that hakoda was too late, the fact that hakoda was too late because katara was too late, the fact that sokka was utterly helpless in the matter, the fact that it’s implied that their family almost fell apart after the entire ordeal took place.
which brings me to; a home is in a certain way a heart. the heart of the family. so you have a brutal death of one member of the family, a member whose death causes the household to fall apart, in the middle of this home. i imagine they didn’t think much of it at first, particularly hakoda. it’s just a spot to clean, remove the body, pay your respects. just keep everything inside, don’t let your kids notice things have changed that much, an old tale really. katara wouldn’t look at the spot for three years, and would not step on it longer than a few seconds for three years more. sokka didn’t really see the body – he was dragged out of the way by bato, and he was too busy holding katara himself afterwards to truly see what had happened.
the next couple of days, they start noticing the other spots kya was in for the last time, too. not just where she died, but where she ate her dinner and where she sat next to katara’s and sokka’s beds to tell them a story the night before, where she stood at the edge of the bed in the middle of the night when she told hakoda she had a bad feeling, where she helped kanna to prepare breakfast that morning, rubbing each of sokka’s and katara’s noses with her own before they went outside to play. all those spots are empty as well.
i think katara struggled a lot with being in the house but she struggled even more being outside it. we are told by sokka that when kya died, katara kept everyone together, which i believe mirrors the way she keeps the gaang together not by being responsible but by reaching into the emotional core of each of them. wherever she was, her emotions were welcome, as a daughter without a mother and as their last waterbender as well. i think she clinged to the house whenever she could, but that she also felt she had this responsibility to keep the village hopeful.
sokka was more practical about it. since he only notes the absence of kya rather than the actual spot where she was killed, he spends his days outside because the entire house feels strange to him. as if it was unsafe on all edges. so he watches the warriors training, he goes to hunt with the other men, he watches his father take over the position of the chief, he listens to the people when they talk about the fire nation and what they did to their waterbenders, and he gets himself ready outside for when the fire nation comes again to kill his sister.
you also have to consider that before hakoda's departure sokka spent some time with the warriors and the hunters, katara probably helped kanna with some of the chores of the house, but after hakoda left katara and sokka took over chores that concerned the entire village. obviously the water tribes have a strong sense of community and interdependence, but fundamentally sokka and katara were kids by that time, and so when the others left sokka was left as the next thing to the last man left in their village while katara had to take care of a bunch of stuff as well to make up for half their village being missing. they most likely had to make the entire village their home.

oKAY BUT AVATAR FROZEN AU (ft. Zukka)
I was listening to Frozen on Broadway in the shower and it literally won’t leave my head y’ALL (sorry this is long, but I didn’t know how to do the read more thing because I suck so if anyone knows how, please lemme know!)
Katara: Elsa
Sokka: Anna
Zuko: Kristoff
Aang: Olaf
Azula: Hans
Druk: Sven
The Trolls Are: Iroh, Toph, Suki and Kyoshi Warriors, Mai, Ty Lee, Jet and the Freedom Fighters, maybe Yue idk yet
(Cabbage Man is Oaken)
Okay, so I know Sokka is the older sibling and Katara has Anna’s trust, but Katara is the last Waterbender in the SWT so
idk I’m still working it out since as soon as I got out of the shower I started typing this, but I think Katara and Sokka were a family ya know with Hakoda and Kya and Katara had her bending but the Fire Nation was still like iffy so they didn’t publicize it
Sokka thought it was SO COOL and always wanted to play with her powers ya know? They probably created Aang together, not sure about that yet anyways
Katara hits Sokka with her powers (ice maybe?) on accident and he’s dying, they go to “the trolls” but what imma call White Lotus and Yue is there or she was but had to give herself to the moon, but the moon spirit saves Sokka, has white strip in his hair like Anna, they wipe his memories of Katara’s bending
Katara is sad and scared and terrified so she shuts herself in her room and will not go penguin sledding or fishing or anything with Sokka and now Sokka is sad
Hakoda and Kya are eventually like Katara needs to learn how to control it or just rid of her powers, let’s go to the NWT and see if there is a good chi blocker or a master for Katara to learn from
they die on the ship, probably Fire Nation
(also, the war is still technically going on but also not? Not as intensely as it was in the show, but like, it’s there)
I’m not sure what to do about the chief stuff, so we’ll ignore that for now
It is Sokka or Katara’s coronation, Sokka is excited because he can leave their palace and Katara is not excited because she still doesn’t know how to bend or control it
Sokka runs into Azula and now let’s talk about the Fire Nation for a second
Ozai is still ruling, Ursa is gone, Zuko was banished and Iroh went with him
Ozai did burn Zuko’s face, probably for the same reason, so Iroh took Zuko and they went to the Earth Kingdom and met up with other people who had been hurt by the Fire Nation and they became a family and Zuko eventually leaves and finds an egg and it’s Druk! They become besties but Zuko leaves kind of for the same reasons as in Zuko Alone
Ozai is pretty pissed at the Water Tribes because they’re thriving or something and wants to rule them so he’s like “Azula, go hit on one of the siblings and make them love you and then marry them and I can- I mean, you can control the SWT and NWT”
and she’s like “dope I shall bring destruction onto their land eventually” because poor girl is getting manipulated:(
So, Azula and Sokka run into each other, Azula is a terrible flirt but so is Sokka and they bond over how terrible they both are at human interaction and Sokka is like “yeah after I turned ten, they never let me leave the castle so I have zero friends”
and Azula is mentally like wait I have no friends too:(... but is like “yeah I feel, I’m only the Fire Nation Princess, but it’s a boys only club, ya know? So no one takes me seriously”
and Sokka is like “you... I like you...” and definitely starts crushing and asks her to do an activity and yada yada yada
someone gets crowned, idk who yet
Azula and Sokka spend more time together and Azula is like “wow he is so starved for affection that if I asked him to marry me he’d probably say yes Father what kind of mission is this this is so easy”
so she tries it out and he’s like “SURE” and they tell Katara and she’s just not having it
“Sokka! The Fire Nation killed our parents!”
“Yeah, five years ago--” (or more, idk timeline yet) “--besides, this would be good treaty-wise and politically, ya know?” (so I guess this means Katara would become chief? Idk how that happens but we’ll figure it out)
and Katara is just “... SOKKA you just met this girl. Also, she’s Fire Nation!”
and he’s like “well you aren’t in charge on me so imma do whatever I want”
and Katara is like ahhhhh and he ends up pulling a glove off and she waterbends and everyone is like hbfvrvunyuibtuy wHAT
and Azula is like “ooh so there really is still a waterbender left in the SWT...”
Katara runs away and accidentally freezes everywhere she goes (for purposes of plot convenience, she goes to the Earth Kingdom without knowing it and freezes that too I guess? She’s pretty powerful, y’all
and Sokka is like “I gotta go after her!”
and Azula is mentally lie death mission, that gets him out of the way “sURE! I’ll stay here:)”
so Sokka goes and runs into Zuko and Druk
“Dragons are better than people, Druk, don’t you think that’s right?”
and he sees Sokka struggling to paddle a boat or something, again, don’t have land and stuff figured out here yet
Sokka basically annoys him into helping him
(and Zuko won’t admit it, but he kinda liked Sokka’s vibe and was like I haven’t spoken to a human person in years is it selfish to want this? He’s not disgusted at my scar...”)
Zuko does not tell Sokka that he is a fire bender, he mentions he used to live in the Fire Nation, though
Katara makes maybe not an elaborate ice castle, but she is like “LET IT GOOOOOOO” when she finds open land and just makes it so pretty and guys imagine Katara in an Inuit-style Elsa dress? Wouldn’t that be the most gorgeous thing??
Maybe she misses home so she remakes her village out of ice, maybe if she’s lonely (because Katara really hates being alone but she’ll do it for the good of her people) she’ll make ice sculptures of people from the village like her mom and dad and Sokka
also ya know what? No, I don’t want Katara to be completely alone. She finds Momo trying to hide from the cold and takes him in so it is Katara and Momo
Sokka and Zuko are riding Druk, but he’s tired so they aren’t super high, and Sokka is explaining what happened to Zuko and Zuko starts laughing because “you planned on marrying someone you just met? From the Fire Nation?”
“You’re from the Fire Nation!”
“yeah, it sucks. Why do you think I left? But seriously? That’s the funniest thing I’ve heard in three years!” (because I just decided it has been three years of him alone)
and Sokka doesn’t mention that it’s Azula yet because Zuko was already laughing at him but wait Zuko has a really cute and precious laugh--
they talk a bit and Sokka kind of mentions the strip in his hair and how it happened because he got pneumonia as a child and almost died but the moon spirit saved his lifeand Zuko doesn’t know how the frick to respond so he just “... that’s rough, buddy”
Actually, imma take back something I said earlier, they don’t make Aang, her unleashing her powers shakes the earth or water or something and the iceberg pops up and Zuko and Sokka find it and Sokka is like “Imma touch it”
and Zuko goes “wait no don’t touch i-- you touched it” and Aang pops out and is like “HELLO!”
and they’re like who the frick are you?
and Aang is like “I’m the Avatar, Aang”
and Zuko and Sokka just :0
or maybe Katara and Sokka like created him as a kid or like believed he would come back to save them and that kind of like manifested into what happened? Idk but somehow, and maybe more plot convenience, he knows who Katara is, maybe the monks told him she’d be his waterbending master before he got trapped?
“Katara? you’re looking for her? I’m looking for her too! She’s the most powerful waterbender in the world and I need to learn how to waterbend!”
“Woah cool! You should join us!” says Sokka
and Zuko facepalms because “sOKKA again with the people you just met!”
and Sokka is like “I just met you”
“Fair point”
“besides, you guys are some of the first people I’ve talked to in like 5-8 years!”
and Zuko and Aang get kind of quiet because wow now that Sokka mentions in, that’s super true for him, but also true for the both of them... they’re all lonely
so Aang is like “okay let’s find Katara!” and they talk and stuff on the way and Aang mentions being excited to visit the Fire Nation and see Kuzon and all of his airbender friends and Zuko and Sokka just ??? then it hits them that oh boy he’s been in that iceberg for a long time--
so Zuko tells him and Aang is big sad and goes into the Avatar State or something and idk imma come back to this
plus also more friendship bonding happens and more feelings between Zuko and Sokka happen
they eventually reach Katara and they’re all like wow this is gorgeous
and Aang is about to walk in and stuff and Zuko stops him “maybe Sokka should go first? Since she’s his sister?”
Sokka goes into the village, finds the one that looks like their house / hut / palace, sees Katara and they both start crying and hug each other and Katara goes “I’ve missed you so much”
and Sokka is like “why did you leave? Please come back, I’ll help protect you from the Fire Nation! No one will get to you!”
and Katara is like “that’s not what I’m worried about” and her eyes flicker to the white strand in Sokka’s hair. “I don’t know how to control it and I don’t have a teacher and I’m dangerous.”
“I have some friends who can help you find a teacher! Aang and Zuko!”
Aang hears his name so he runs out and is like “Hi, I’m Aang, the avatar, want a hug? You look sad”
and Katara is like this boy is a sweetie and must be protected at all costs so no hug from em because I hurt those I love:(
and then Aang says “The monks told me about you! It was like a hundred years ago, but they told me Katara would be my waterbending teacher! You’re the most powerful waterbender in the world!”
and she laughs and almost believes him but “No, no I can’t control it. What if I hurt people?”
And Aang is like “we can learn together then!”
and Sokka and Katara talk more, Sokka is like “please come back, we’ll protect you from the Fire Nation and help you find a teacher I need you I miss you” and Katara wants to so badly
but she says no
they talk and Sokka mentions that basically everywhere is frozen and Katara is just ???? and Sokka is like “please, you can unfreeze it and people will see you aren’t a threat!”
and Katara flips out, they argue a bit, she hits him in the heart on accident and screams so Zuko and Aang (who left) run out and see Sokka on the ground and Katara hyperventilating and Zuko helps Sokka up and kind of has to hold him up for a couple minutes and he begs Katara to come with them because she’s his baby sister and he’ll protect her and she’s crying and her hand instinctively touches her mother’s necklace and she tells him no and that if they won’t leave, she’ll make them leave and then Aang and Zuko start begging her too because Zuko just met her but he knows that she’ll play a huge role in stopping the war and that she is incredibly powerful (and also she’s so kind when she isn’t accidentally being dangerous, he thinks-- based off of the stories Sokka had told him and the look on her face after she struck Sokka
Sokka says no and Aang and Zuko stand firm beside him so Katara makes a giant sky bison named Appa or something who chases them out of the village and they all end up falling into the freaking cold water and Sokka helps pull Aang and Zuko out since he’s the best swimmer and we love Zuko but he’s kind of a terrible swimmer
and Zuko goes “thank yo-- what’s with your hair?”
“My hair? We just gout out of the ocean, you should see your hair”
And Aang pipes up with “no, your hair is white”
“Wait it’s what? Does it look bad?”
“... no?” - Zuko
Sokka goes “you hesitated you think it’s baddddd”
and Zuko says “no, no, not like that... it’s because your sister struck you, isn’t it?”
and Sokka thinks and realization kind of dawns on him “I never had pneumonia...” and it hits him and he groans “that’s why she stopped playing with me! We need to go back, I need to talk to her--”
and he falls as he tries to get up
Aang and Zuko share a look and are like “yeah, no, you need help or you’ll actually die again”
Zuko suddenly is like “wait? the moon spirit saved you that one time, right? maybe She can do it again! Come on! I have some friends who can help you!”
while all of that is happening, Azula is planning on assassinating Katara and the people of the SWT and visitors from the rest of the world are freezing so she’s like “I guess I’ll go stop her since she must have killed my fiance”
some others go with her and they find where Katara is hiding out and Azula kills Appa:( and faces Katara with her people
Katara easily get the others out of the way and then it’s her and Azula
“I don’t want to hurt you!” Katara says
Azula puts her hands down and says “I don’t want to either. Just come with us, fox the weather, and we can help you”
“Why should I trust you? Your nation has wanted to kill me for years!”
“mmm fair point”
they fight a bit, Katara ends up getting knocked out and they take her back and lock her up
going back to the trio and Druk, they’re going to the little corner of the Earth Kingdom where the White Lotus is and Sokka’s hair is getting progressively more white and he’s getting more cold and Zuko is starting to panic so he says “I’m going to show you something, but you have to promise not to freak out”
so Sokka nods and Aang is chill with it because he doesn’t hate firebenders like the rest of the world
so Zuko creates a fire and holds it close to Sokka who does indeed freak out and crawls to the other side of the dragon
and Aang is like “wow! That’s so pretty! Can you teach me that? I need a firebending teach too! It was going ti be Kuzon but...”
and Zuko goes to Sokka again and says “I didn’t want you to hate me. I’m not evil or anything like Ozai. You’re freezing, please, let me help you warm up.”
and Sokka is silent then says “I trust you” and Zuko kind of pulls him in and wraps his arms around Sokka to warm him up and Aang looks left out so Sokka tells him to join
and all three are like “wow. This is the most human contact I’ve had in years... it’s nice”
somewhere here I think would be a good time for Sokka to ask about Zuko’s scar and so Zuko tells the story and Sokka and Aang are pissed and ready to kill but before Sokka and piece together that Azula is his sister, they arrive
Zuko is like “hello, Zuko here! But you guys probably knew that, or at least Toph will-- oof!” because Toph runs at him and gives him a super hard hug and suddenly the White Lotus is surrounding him and are like “how are you?” “where’ve you been?” “we missed you!” etc, etc
and Zuko is like “haha I missed you guys too but um, I’m actually here for something else... he helps Aang and Sokka off of Druk and Toph immediately feels the change in their heart rates when Zuko helps Sokka and Sokka leans against Zuko so she goes “you got a boyfriend!”
cue matching looks of horror on the two’s faces and suddenly everyone is interrogating both of them and Zuko is like y’all!!! He needs help! Where’s Iroh?
he is ignored:/
“Zuko looks grumpy and he acts grumpy but really he’s a sweetheart and mushy!” says Ty Lee
“make sure you give him lots of hugs and attention because he will not tell you when he wants it” Suki says
and Zuko’s whole face is red and it’s the funniest thing Sokka has seen and he’s so invested in all of these people and their stories and wants to stay forever but then remembers Katara and Zuko finally is like “IROH!”
Iroh comes and sees Sokka and he’s like welcome back
and like at this point Sokka can barely stand and Zuko is supporting all his weight
and Zuko is like “you helped him when he was younger, please help him now!”
and Iroh is sad “there is nothing I can do, nephew. The moon spirit is generous, but to touch the same thing twice... an act of true love is the only way to fix this”
and Zuko gets sad and says “your fiance”
and Sokka kind of mutters “... yeah... my fiance” because now after spending a week minimum a month max with Zuko, Aang, and Druk, he definitely has feelings for Zuko but he’s confused
and everyone else gets sad and Toph is confused because she can feel their heart rates
but Zuko sucks it up and helps Sokka back onto Druk and they set back for the SWT and all Sokka is thinking is for Katara for Katara for Katara for Katara... was she right? Maybe I was too fast with Azula... but we connected and she wanted to talk to me and... for Katara for Katara...
so Katara is locked up and Azula is like “this would have been fine if you did not put up a struggle. If you surrendered peacefully we would not have to resort to this”
and then leaves because she hears that Sokka is back and Katara is like “I’m a monster, but so is Azula and I need to find Sokka and apologize and fix everything I’ve done, even if I die” so she escapes because Katara is cool like that
Zuko and Azula see each other and it’s awkward, but she sees Sokka in his arms and she realizes that he didn’t die and her idiot brother helped him they make eye contact and Zuko can kind of tell what her plan is in her eyes but Azula feigns worry for Sokka and grabs him from Zuko’s arms before he can stop her and Sokka is like “Azula...” and she’s pretending and stuff and then she sees Aang and her eyes widen at his tattoos and Zuko shoves Aang behind him and says “You aren’t taking the avatar to Father. Just save Sokka, he doesn’t have much time left”
her eyes linger on Aang with interest but she turns and leaves and sets Sokka down in a room and Sokka explains it and tries kissing her but she just laughs and is like “oh, if only there was someone out there who loved you” and in his hazy and near death mind, Sokka understands it all because he may be naive, but he’s clever
“You’re Zuko’s sister”
“I am. You really were so trusting and naive to fall in love with the first person you see.”
“I’m sorry”
“What?”
“Zuko told me about your father... I’m sorry he’s manipulating you.”
and Azula shrieks, lights her hands on fire and is just barely able to stop herself from burning him, makes sure the fire in the room dies, mentions killing Katara and Zuko and capturing Aang, then locks Sokka in the room
and Sokka is crying because he should have listened to Katara and he just wants her to be okay and he can barely move, he can’t do anything to protect her from problems he caused and Aang is going to get hurt and he misses Zuko
and Zuko misses Sokka and Aang is like “okay, something’s up”
Zuko tells him about how Azula is his sister and he doesn’t trust her and that he thinks he loves Sokka, or has feelings for him at least
Aang goes “do you think Azula really loves Sokka?”
“... no”
“then we need to turn around. Druk!”
Azula tells everyone Sokka died because of Katara and that they nee to kill her and his last words were marriage vows
the door handle rattles and Aang comes in and Sokka shakes his head and he’s crying and says “you need to get out of here, she’s gonna kill you”
and Aang is shaking his head and saying “no, don’t worry! Zuko is here and he’s on his way! It’s storming really bad outside right now and he’s fighting off some guards, but he came back for you” and Aang helps Sokka up and out of the room but guards see them and Aang stays behind to fight them
Katara stumbled upon Azula as she tries escaping and they start fighting, kind of like the Agni Kai fight and it’s really epic and cool and stuff and then Azula says something like stop fooling around and wasting everyone’s time. I am now the ruler of the SWT and I am ordering you to stand down!”
and Katara goes “ruler... where is Sokka?”
“Sokka? Oh, he returned weak and cold. His heart was frozen. Your brother is dead because of you”
and Katara falls to her knees and cries and Azula is like “ha weakness time to kill”
and Sokka sees Zuko and he’s “running” to him but then sees Katara and Azula about to kill her and jumps in front of her despite Zuko’s pleas and Sokka is frozen and when Katara looks up and sees what happened, she loses control and freezes Azula like she did in the Agni Kai and the storm dies down and Zuko and Aang run to her and she’s clinging to Sokka and crying and so is Zuko and then sibling love and he comes back
Zuko is like “love. It doesn’t have to be a kiss.”
and they hug and Sokka is back to his normal self except his hair is still white maybe, but he introduces Katara to Zuko and Aang formally and they all hug and then the White Lotus comes and Toph and Suki and Mai and Jet are all sad because they missed the fight but are happy that Sokka’s okay and Azula is still kind of there and idk what they do with her, I’ll come back to that, actually, maybe Azula manages to escape
but so it would end kind of ambiguously because Ozai is still there and the SWT is untrusting of Katara still so they have to flee maybe and they return to the White Lotus hide out and Zuko and Sokka have a moment where they are like “hey I think I like you”
then Sokka and Katara have a great sibling moment
and that’s how it ends
okay wow that was long and took an hour and a half to type but y’all this would NOT leave my head!!!! I feel like this doesn’t have enough Katara in it, so know that if I actually made this a thing, there would be a lot more Katara and more sibling moments and Zuko and Aang and White Lotus and stuff but uhhh yeah idk if this has been done before but it was living in my mind rent free (p.s. Mai and Ty Lee do have a history with Azula in this AU and there would be an Azula redemption at some point)
if anyone has any thoughts or feelings or anything to add, please do:) I wasn’t sure if I should make Sokka or Katara Elsa, but I went with Katara because she had the powers and Zukka happening worked better with Sokka as Anna, idk

Trying my hand at an Avatar Sokka AU. Gonna be weird Bc thassa me and I’m just That. Anyways, don’t expect too Much from this. And I’m gonna try to Make it good, but I also Haven’t watched the show a million times. Just a few.
It’ll probably include:
- No one knowing Sokka’s the Avatar except Kanna and Kya
- Sokka as Chief of the SWT. I will probably make him younger when his father leaves for plot purposes.
- Sokka starts as a firebender because the Spirits do something. It will never be clarified what they do.
- The former Avatar was Aang’s friend and saved him and Appa after they decided to run away together. However, it was only the duo that got put in the iceberg, preserved by the Avatar’s power, and that Avatar went into hiding without his best friend. He stayed alive and in hiding until he knew that it was unlikely anyone thought he was still alive. If it was assumed that the Avatar was gone forever, his successor would be safe from the Fire Nation. Especially because the raids would ensure the Earth Kingdom would be suspect instead of the Water Tribes.
- When the raids were done, the previous Avatar pulled a Jedi Master and just straight-up died to pass on the responsibilities.
- Sokka didn’t discover his abilities until he was about five or six. It was during a raid and he was with his mother and grandmother. He learned to control it quickly with their help. By control, I mean he doesn’t randomly cause steam or smoke or light firepits. He can hold his flames inside.
- Sokka attempted to copy the moves of the raiders who used bending, but found that waterbending moves like those his sister did worked better on the ice. Since he grew up with the Midnight Sun and Polar Night, he isn’t affected by them. (Also, his Avatar Spirit balances it out a lot.)
- Sokka thinking he’s just a firebender because the raids have been going on for a hundred years, but then Kanna has him do a test and the results are absolute. He is the Avatar.
- Sokka trying to imagine what an airbender would bend like. Sneaking out in harsh winds and practicing to bend with light steps and using the air to lift him higher. Building up his lungs and trying to be as though he’s in the mountains or soaring above treetops.
- He doesn’t get far, but he gets started.
- Using his lung power and inner flames to dive deep and long to catch fish and gather other supplies. More often after his father left.
- When Aang comes along, Sokka observes his every move, trying to master them in private late at night, with the excuse of keeping watch
- Aang is taken by Zuko because he’s an airbender and they’re supposed to be extinct
- Sokka eventually gets good enough with both the firebending he learned from his enemies and the airbending he learned from his friend to start waterbending. He’s sort of good because he’s been using the moves for years (amateurish but still used)
- The trips go the same, only they’re now just trying to find possible teachers for the Avatar and the Avatar themself so they can somehow teach the person all at once before the comet
- Aang connects to the Spirit World because he’s a monk and he knew the other former Avatar extremely well. The Spirits allow him passage.
- Aang causes Sokka some panic when he compares him to his ‘old friend, the previous Avatar’. Sokka eventually gets used to it.
- Zuko tracks the Gaang because they’re his only lead.
- Sokka acts solely as a nonbender when around anyone because he doesn’t want to be the Avatar. Yes, he knows the war is awful. Yes, he grew up with it. But that’s exactly why he doesn’t want to be the Avatar. He grew up with raids and the death and destruction that followed. His mother died protecting his sister when they were so young. All the men, the hunters and warriors, left the tribe and left Sokka in charge when he was a preteen. The war has brought nothing but sorrow, and Sokka doesn’t think he can overcome something so huge, so insurmountable. So he acts as much like a nonbender as he can.
- He isn’t sexist towards Suki because Kyoshi makes sure he has that stamped out early on. Instead, the moment the blindfold is off, he’s craning his neck back to see the statue of his past life. Suki thinks he’s a bit thick, and Katara doesn’t understand but covers for his preoccupation.
- Sokka learns to be a Kyoshi Warrior when Kysohi literally takes him over during the night and steals both warpaint and an outfit, and then teaches him to properly wear it all. Suki finds him firebending in full Kyoshi garb and using the fans. She assumes that he’s just the product of the Fire Nation’s cruelty.
- However, she does ask why he stole their gear and how he’s using the fans better than most newbies.
- “Kyoshi.” “What?” “Kyoshi... possessed me... and taught me how to be like you... and she’s proud of you.” “... is this normal for the Avatar’s friends?”
- Suki doesn’t tell the others under the conditions that she ‘take over for Kyoshi’ in training him and she can figure him out for herself through that.
- At the Fire Temple, the group gets separated, but Sokka is called by Roku to the Solstice room. He ends up managing to get inside with the help of Shyu, who understands he’s protecting himself and others by hiding.
- The others still get captured, and Shyu claims that Sokka made a controlled explosion to get in (the original idea until Shyu told him he knew the boy was the Avatar). Aang tells Katara that Roku sealing the chamber means Sokka is being spoken to. Zuko and Zhao are still there as well.
- When Roku takes over to tear down the temple, he disappears into an obscure hallway so Sokka can regain control without his friends knowing.
- Toph finds out Sokka is the Avatar when she ‘sees’ him practicing. She starts demanding he ‘keep her company’ when she does daily bending practice (they all do it so they can improve enough to eventually teach the Avatar and fight the Firelord). Whenever Toph ‘sees’ Sokka make a mistake while practicing earthbending, she uses the correct moves the next day and makes sure she’s in full view of Snoozles.
- Sometimes Toph drags Sokka over to watch Katara and Aang practice because she’s ‘bored’.
- Aang goes to see the Guru and when he’s heading back because he was given a vision of Katara in danger, he explains what he learned to Sokka. Sokka takes Aang’s place in their plan, so he is the one who helps Iroh rescue Zuko and Katara.
- When Azula starts to attack and it looks like they’ll lose, Sokka hides himself and is ignored because he’s presumed a nonbender. He goes through opening his chakras in what is definitely record time, but Sokka’s always been good at following plans/instructions (not orders, instructions, like how-to’s and stuff). He has to let go of his attachments to the Gaang, to his tribe, to Yue, Suki, and those he met on his journey. He does so by considering the fact that by letting go of his focus on them in particular, he can focus on stopping the larger problems, the problems that are likely to or are causing them harm.
- Sokka enters the Avatar State just as Aang enters, and the chaos causes Azula to think Aang is the Avatar. When she shoots him with lightning, Sokka drops from the Avatar State and gets his family out of there.
- Zuko still turns against them, but Agni’s voice is strong, and Sokka sees the same brotherly nature as he has within the boy.
- After taking the FN ship, Katara brings up a discussion of who the Avatar could be because they were there and helped the group, and Sokka makes up a vague story of how someone pulled him out of the battle (to explain his disappearance). Toph acts like she’s actually wondering, but pulls Sokka aside later and tells him she knows.
- Sokka can use metalbending, but doesn’t do it often if at all because he’s so used to hiding and he feels like it’s Toph’s thing. She stamps that out once she gets sick of it.
I might add more, but I’m just plotting this out right now, and I’m gonna try it out later when I have the time. If you want, suggest stuff. If you hate this idea, then please give me constructive criticism instead of pure wrath. I’m still going to include a character arc that hopefully does Sokka justice, but instead of focusing on his dismantling of his former sexist ways and learning that not being some big tough guy is okay (he can love shopping and fashion, he can love poetry, he can love dresses and makeup, he can love singing and have fun and pick up fine arts and paint), it’ll be more of him opening up and learning that he is strong enough, and if he isn’t, he has friends and family for a reason. He’ll learn how to be more confident in his abilities and how to let his true self shine more than his fake one.
Have at It.

Whilst I’m thinking about her, we talk about the trauma faced by various characters in ATLA but I don’t think I’ve ever seen something about Kanna? Like, she:
Faces discrimination and an arranged marriage in the North Pole
Escapes that (and I want to know about that journey - was she alone?? it must’ve been a very long journey. What about her experiencing the war properly? Because she must’ve travelled through the Earth Kingdom at some point) and arrives in the SWT around the same time the raids started (based on Pakku saying when he gave the necklace to Kanna and Hama’s account of the raids)
Lived in the SWT during this period of extremely heavy raiding, seeing people she knew, like Hama, taken away - knowing full well the isolationism of the NWT, and lets be honest, probably having some complex feelings about leaving because anyone would
Presumably loses her husband/Hakoda’s father before the raid in which Kya died (although Hakoda could’ve been leading the attack because his dad was too old, or he was more skilled etc. - i still haven’t decided whether i see chief as an inherited position or not)
Kya’s death. I mean, Kanna was obviously close enough to Kya to give her her necklace, so it must’ve been a hard blow for her. And then take into account what the loss meant to the other members of the family?
Hakoda probably shuts down, tries to carry on as normal but doing a really bad job of it? Sokka’s doing the best to copy his dad, but he’s floundering and wants his mum? Katara, at 8 years old, steps into her mother’s shoes. Discussing this with @meteor-sword and this is both a mix of Katara’s way of dealing but also something she’s forced to do because there’s no one else to do it? And other people notice, but the village is struggling enough as it it. Sokka has to take on his own responsibilities, so he takes it for granted that so does Katara, not quite realising the full extent of them.
And imagine how guilty Kanna must feel at this. She watches her grandchildren step up and fill roles they’re far too young for and knows that she is physically incapable of doing them herself. It must get worse after Hakoda and the other men leave. We see Sokka (and Katara) trying to provide food for the village; not only did it seem like hunting was normally a male role and so something she doesn’t know much about, Kanna is also said to be the oldest person in the village, so it’s very unlikely she’d be able to take over many of the duties they’re forced into
(and an aside, how much did the division of roles hinder the SWT after the men go off to war? If the women are leaving a 15 y/o boy and his 14 y/o sister to hunt for the village, and to protect them, how many skills are they missing? Think of how the uncertainty they faced after the men went off to war must’ve increased after the only remaining ‘man’ and waterbender left them, just after they were visited by the fire nation.)
Hakoda leaving. And the other men of course, many of whom Kanna probably helped deliver? (based on Katara’s comments about helping Gran-Gran deliver babies) Her son goes off to war and she doesn’t know if she’s ever going to see him again
Zuko and the fire nation ship - they might not have done much physical harm but the emotional strain? the black snow? that must’ve triggered so many horrible memories
Katara and Sokka leaving. I know she supported it, but imagine how much strength it must’ve taken to give her blessing for them to not only leave the SWT, but to go on a dangerous journey and then end up at the NWT?
I’m sure there’s more I’m not covering but this is what I thought off straight off

in an ideal fic, what ships would there be and how would they interact? gm ☀️☀️
goodmorning! well, it’s 3pm now, but i love the sunshine emojis 🌞
obligatory disclaimer that i have mixed feelings about fanfiction as a medium. i much prefer reading paradise lost to the bible, but pride & prejudice & zombies does nothing for me. i think it’s similar to how when staging a play that’s been done a million times before, changing the setting must reframe the text on a thematic level for that staging to be necessary, and thus, good.
a lot of fanfiction, to me, whether published or lost to the archives of the internet, attempts to reframe the text without actually understanding the text. i realize that not all fanfiction exists to explore the text in the first place. sometimes it just works as good shorthand to explore one’s (often sexual) fantasies. you already know these characters––oh, and now they’re fucking.
so in that regard, i can’t exactly fault these authors for not understanding the text. i can fault them for other things, certainly, but thematic relevance was clearly not a goal in the first place. it’s the difference between a ship existing in a work of fanfiction to further the themes, and a fanfiction written for the sole purpose of exploring a ship.
with all that in mind, here’s a bullet-pointed list of fanfictions i would read should they exist and be well-written, but definitely do not exist and are not well-written because i have the appropriate amount of faith in the fanfic community (and that is... very little)...
a really long story from mai’s pov elapsing from her childhood to at least a year into zuko’s reign. the climax of the story is the turning point at the boiling rock wherein ty lee betrays azula. the first act is the buildup to all of that, and the second act is the fallout. the main ship being mai/ty lee, obviously. oh and at one point towards the end, mai and sokka play pai sho together. that is of the utmost importance.
a story told almost like an epic poem (perhaps with the structure of one, but still in prose) about suki’s adventures throughout the show’s chronology and then spanning afterwards as well. we learn about her backstory, what she got up to in the months in between seeing sokka. it’s usually quite bleak, as she is mostly helping refugees before getting kidnapped by azula, tortured for information, and then thrown into a horrific maximum security prison! but it’s not all bad. and seeing as suki is the protagonist, it would never make for a bad read, either. the main ships are sokka/suki and suki/ty lee. because duh.
azula, in the years spanning the depths of her recovery, going on hikes with toph. basically each segment is just the next hike with toph, in chronological order, and it tracks her development just through how much she is willing to divulge, and what toph would say in response. she grows a lot. unsurprisingly, toph makes for a great therapist. no romantic shipping of any sort, but azula & toph would share a really fascinating bond.
sokka and iroh playing pai sho. sokka and asami playing pai sho. (AU?? or are they in the spirit world?? idk lol) i suppose korra/asami would be present because korra’s all “kick his ass babe” and sokka/zuko would be as well because wherever sokka and iroh are together, zuko must be too. and of course, he is very invested in the outcome of this game, even if he does fall asleep at one point. i guess you’d have to make up the rules of pai sho, at least vaguely, seeing as there are no official rules, but isn’t it a lovely idea?
chell’s AU wherein azula and zuko run away together as children and join the gaang. just gonna link to it here. (read it if you know what’s good for you.) i don’t think there are really any ships, other than azula’s one-sided crush on suki, because azula does not have time to care about other people’s love lives (and it’s from her pov) but sokka/zuko is alluded to, if i remember correctly.
my AU that simply exists as an excuse to have sokka be a lightningbender. here.
a whole fucking novel of an AU wherein instead of being tasked to capture the avatar, zuko was simply left to die in the southern water tribe. he expects to either freeze to death or be eaten by wolves or, if he’s lucky, be killed instantly by the people there, but instead, sokka and katara take him in and he grows up in the swt, and goes with them when they find aang three years later. then of course shit goes down once azula shows up, and it’s all a whole thing! since it’s from zuko’s pov, the primary ship is sokka/zuko, obviously.
epistolary between firelord zuko and chief katara of the southern water tribe. none of their letters are remotely diplomatic, and mainly serve as gossip with only the occasional reminder that they are, in fact, world leaders. no ships.
sokka’s life postwar that kind of just details all the cool shit he did. shrug.
idk whether this counts as atla or lok, but i would read a chronicle of kya/izumi dyke drama in a heartbeat and am not ashamed to admit that.
ty lee and azula’s very complicated dynamic from alternating povs. i just think their respective feelings towards each other are super interesting. especially the night at the beach and the turning point at the boiling rock, though all the moments leading up to that are just as important. the ‘ship, though, would be mai/ty lee. (y’all know theyre my favs, right)
the katara cinematic universe is its whole own post, so i’m not even gonna discuss that here.
and then of course, our somehow very in-depth highschool AU (i don’t know how we got here, either) that could be its own series of young adult novels if written by someone with that kind of patience and focus (so to be clear, not me). hopefully, it would be imbursed with that painfully authentic sensibility american vandal (rip legend) had, while also being a bit too earnest, the way all coming of age stories are––but charmingly so. it might even be a series of vignettes, short stories from various povs that all come together in a painfully hilarious tapestry. azula begins studying for the SATs freshman year. mai sarcastically quips at anyone who deigns to speak to her. also she’s dating zuko, so that’s great comedy fodder of course. katara runs for student body president against azula. sokka and zuko land themselves in detention and they find a way to escape. toph joins the science club just because sokka runs the science club; things explode. stuff like that.
i used to say i’d want a kyoshi backstory, but now we have one, and i simply have yet to read it. oops.
oh and this is lok, but i’ve always wanted more on mako & lin’s dynamic. i just think they’re really cute together. (to be clear, not romantically. ew)
i think the avatar universe is also just rife with fascinating lore, though, and you could pretty much write anything, set in any time period, that complies with canon and– hopefully– enhances it. for example, i would love to read a story that incorporates the physics of their universe into its thematic framework. i really liked the stuff with the lionturtles, for example.
oh, and of course, a sokka/zuko vignette that’s just them going to see a production of king lear and then discussing it afterwards. that fanfiction exists for an audience of one, but you did ask me, so...
