Solo Reacting to Orphan Black #508 “Guillotines Decide”

My Galaxy of Women

The Setup: I (Miri) am doing solo reactions to the fifth and final season of Orphan Black, because joy and adrenaline love company as much as misery does. I was right last week--these last few episodes are full steam ahead, top quality Orphan Black. No one is safe, but at least everyone (living) is finally together again or will be soon. Many spoilers and gifs below the cut!

SARAH: Just because you’ve earned a break doesn’t mean you get one, and Sarah knows it.

COSIMA: I like that her dance is both joyful and predicated on stomping on Rachel’s face

RACHEL: I’m not over this yet—that eye stalk clearly went DEEP into her brain and removing it without help was NOT WISE

Everyone should note that Rachel is wearing grey now that she’s no longer Neolution’s darling or the evil figure and basically my super insightful thoughts on her wardrobe are right and not at all obvious.

ALISON: I do love her relationship with Felix.

And she’s TRYING with Donnie to be less controlling. She’s not perfect, but she’s working on it. You go, Alison.

HELENA: Helena knows when you’re lying, Gracie.

Oh, Helena’s purpose for her memoirs is so lovely.

Helena has always been willing to love the people she views as family, even if they have tried to kill her in the past. I’m glad she hasn’t lost that.

CHARLOTTE: So Kira is her niece, I guess? Interesting. I like them finally meeting. It’s a merger of the Leda generation and the next generation.

EVERYONE ELSE:

S is such a mama bear and I love her dearly.

They do a nice job of showing that S is a good liar to the people in her life but that she is actually lying

“I’m not gonna have any sister shenanigans” ok, Felix, sure. That’ll work out.

The Siobhan/Delphine machinations are a nice bookend to the beginning dynamics—the clones being lied to by loved ones for the good of the mission. Except it’s the opposite mission this time.

Collin the morgue guy has gotten hotter and I’m into it

Gracie, stay strong!!! I’m so proud of her for protecting Helena!

I like that Felix went Greek goddesses, but not the most known. It works well with the Leda thing, and the moving out from under others’ expectations thing

ENGER IS BACK AND I LOVE AND HATE HER SO MUCH OH MY GOD SHE SHOT GRACIE

Felix’s explanation of how he and Sarah could have ended up as anyone else if they’d been adopted by other families is beautiful and such a genuine way for him to understand himself through all of this insanity

WHAT? Collin and Felix are serious?? When did this happen? Has he been popping up other times and I didn’t recognize him all hot?

S I AM SO PROUD OF YOU with that last revenge. I should have expected no less. I refuse to discuss her dying at this time.

Except that I have to, because I think it’s a very deliberate move. (Obviously; this is Orphan Black and the 3rd from last episode. Everything is deliberate.) OB is the question of identity and self-actualization writ large. Many parents have been found along the way, and now almost all of them have been lost. Part of becoming an adult person is becoming autonomous from one’s parents. In the mundane world, this means moving out and deciding how you want the cupboards arranged for yourself, but on this grand scale, it has to be bit more severe than that. Sarah has lost that one veneer of protection she has just about always had. S made sure Sarah and the rest had what they needed to survive without her before she was killed, but now they have no choice. All the good parents are dead or absent, now all that’s left is to get free of the remaining bad.

September 28: Orphan Black 2x06

Fell over the ground today on my way home from work and scraped my knee up pretty badly but other than that, not a terrible day.

Somehow already on episode 6 of S2 of Orphan Black.

This was an excellent episode. I enjoyed all of the story lines without exception and the only thing missing was Cal, tbqh. I especially enjoyed all of the unusual pairings and relationships.

What I most remembered of this ep was the sestras road trip, and in particular the shot of them curled up on opposite sides of each other like twins in the womb. But as I was watching, I also remembered the bonding over singing in the car. I was actually surprised by how little Helena and Sarah there was, because I thought that was most of the episode, but it’s really mostly just the beginning scenes. Still cute, though.

Again, I’m trying not to let Helena grow on me but her transition from serial killer to sestra/protagonist is just too compelling. They never changed her characterization, is the thing, they just put her in a better environment. What a redemption arc should be. She’s still violent; she’s still feral; but she’s no longer being used and abused for others’ ends. When she’s left to herself, she wants a sister, she wants a boyfriend, she wants babies, she wants to go on vacation--normal wants, in a wild mind. It’s endearing and touching and funny and sweet.

Her romance was Jesse was adorable, also. I know they knew each other for 0.05 seconds but it’s true love and I believe in them. She can call him boyfriend. He watched her end a guy and try to take his eyeballs out with her thumbs and he was STILL like “She has done nothing wrong in her entire life you Honor,” I am not even exaggerating.

The sestra road trip ended a lot faster than I remembered but I guess Helena does have to get back to her “babies.” I can already see her and Gracie bonding. I think Helena respects her for the murder attempt and sympathizes with her because of their similar histories of abuse. But there’s another twist coming I assume, because Gracie ends up pregnant with Helena’s babies at some point, I seem to recall.

Sarah’s adventure in the archives was prime spooky season material. What you see will stay with you.... macabre images and weird noises in the basement...

I’m not sure I entirely get the whole Duncan & Mrs. S history tbqh. I suspect it doesn’t matter as it will be retconned a few more times. As of now I think it’s something like: the clones were a military experiment that got shut down (or did it?),then the Duncans moved to Dyad; they weren't the masterminds, just one of the teams working on it; they lost their original daughter bc Amelia ran away and then got Rachel instead; then they started feeling weird I guess and were going to tattle, so Leekie killed them and burned their stuff and took Rachel, but then Ethan got away, and he joined up with Mrs. S's group, who already had one of the clones themselves and were looking for more info I guess?

My mom and I were also talking about what exactly Mrs. S and her friends do and we decided they’re ad hoc vigilantes whose work is entirely about improving conditions for individuals on the ground, not, like... protests or demonstrations or whatever. Like, they hear about something fucked up and they’re like ‘how can we disrupt this?’ There are experiments on children going on? Let’s get those children! They’re very organized in their use of people and resources and hiding spots, but not in their overall ideology. I like this chaotic energy for them but I ALSO suspect it comes from their organization being more Vibe than Story. Like, could the show have fleshed them out more? Yeah, it would have had the time if it hadn’t gone down like 20 different alternating layers of conspiracy.

I do enjoy Leekie returning as a Villainous Figure. I just... I really like Leekie. like him as a potential ally. I like him as the ultimate mastermind. I like him as the ideologue who turned the benevolent (lol) Dyad Corporation into his own little philosophical playground. I just like him.

A few other quick notes:

Scott was a little annoying in S1 but now I’m remembering why I liked him so much overall. He’s so smart! And rather cute. “I figured out it’s clones... now can I see one?” Lol.

How did Leekie get Kira’s baby teeth stem cells anyway?

I don’t know exactly what Art and Felix were doing today but they ARE the BroTP I didn’t know I needed. Art just making himself at home, like everyone else. “Oh he’s moved in.” “Then why is your hand on my ass?” Etc.

Similarly, Alison and Vic are a BroTP I kinda did know I needed. I hate liking Vic because he absolutely was terrible when he was introduced and now he’s like... comic relief? But he’s entertaining. I feel like this whole working with DiAngelo thing is going to contribute a lot to Alison’s paranoid feelings.

Also I continue to love Alison The Most. Today’s highlights included her threats to Donnie’s balls, every time she told Vic not to say Namaste, and the little way she hit Donnie when he tried bowing to Vic.

“Science is what scientists do” is a great line.

I’m also a fan of “anger is a tool and we use it on problems, not people.” Good advice.

Next is an Alison-centric episode with some Siobhan and Leekie action (not like that), which sounds fun!

like there is so much more to Alison than the stereotypical housewife although Tatiana embodies those aspects of Alison unbelievably well. I tend to like characters who are secretly sociopathic and have a penchant for darkness and I think that’s Alison.

Helena is a very close second because Helena is batshit and fucking hilarious.

cosima

1. sexuality headcanon: canon says she’s a lesbian, i just wanna say that despite what interviews beforehand said.

and i’ve always had the idea that for a long time she had a complicated relationship with her sexuality. she identified as bi and/or queer for a while and swore off labels for another. like she had been with guys before and they were fun and everything. and the girls she was with were also fun but she was only looking for fun there, too. but now she’s gotten to the point where she’s looking for something more serious than fun. and that led her to realizing that she Loves women way more and way more thoroughly than she likes men (if she even can really call it liking men at all). and so she’s getting comfortable with labels and id’s as a lesbian now.

(i only think that because the two conflicting informations needed to be reconciled in my head.) (i’m not a lesbian so please tell me if this is not cool or something that isn’t part of being one.)

2. otp: coshayphine. they’re just. so good. though i’m kind of dragging myself down a sarcoshayphine hole and there’s #noragrets. (some ragrets, actually. that is so many people and hands and emotions to keep track of.)

3. brotp: if it’s not a sarcoshayphine thing, then sarah. i feel like aside from helena and sarah they’re the closest. and they just care so much for each other that if it didn’t get to a dating level then they would be the bestest of bros.

and if it is sarcoshayphine then charlotte. i’ve already decided that she calls her little buddy (even after charlotte gets taller than her) (which is going to happen).

4. notp: idk? paul? i really hated paul.

5. first headcanon that pops into my head: I Have Too Many.

but i love the idea of her getting a hair cut like this or this (short sides and a floofy curly bit at the top) bc in my head she’s nonbinary. so she’s got this big life change of turning over a new leaf and being free finally and coming to terms with some new identities and she just cuts all her hair off. Symbolism.

6. one way in which I relate to this character: i like science and girls and if they happened at the same time for me i would start coughing up blood too.

7. thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character: her seemingly putting her own needs aside and not talking to delphine. like they start and she brings up good points, but delphine is written to be cryptic af so it just seems like she gives up on trying to find out what she wants or working their relationship into something more healthy. and that makes me real uncomfy.8. cinnamon roll or problematic fave?: cinnamon roll!!

2. otp: either him and colin or felony. i just miss tony a whole lot.

5. first headcanon that pops into my head: i have it outlined for the post s5 fic that once coshayphine move into their residence that they’re going to keep for the foreseeable future they hang up the painting of cosima. and she hates being the only one with a 5 foot tall painting.

so being a good foster brother-in-law or whatever they are to each other, he paints one of delphine and shay too, because that’s totally what cosima meant!!!! not that she wanted it taken down/put somewhere other than the front room. thanks felix. sure thing cosima, what are foster brother-in-laws for? and he paints delphine naked to make her just a little uncomfortable (one of his favorite past times), but it’s from the shoulders up. so it’s not too weird.

6. one way in which I relate to this character: sarcasm and using gay as a descriptor

7. thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character:season 4. like. i know it worked out in the end. but the fact that he didn’t understand why searching for his ‘real sister’ while there’s life or death situations bothered sarah was like. the worst. and i understand his side too, but like.. did it need to happen Right Then? when evil corporations were stealing and copyrighting genomes??8. cinnamon roll or problematic fave?: cinnamon roll.

scott

1. sexuality headcanon: biromantic asexual!!

2. otp: hellwizard and/or rune wars.

3. brotp: team science mega force

4. notp: just gonna say paul right down the line, for Comedic Effect.

but for a while there were people who were like scott/delphine or scott/cosima and it was. a no from me.

5. first headcanon that pops into my head: has the unfortunate job of first one down to the lab in the morning. he either wakes cosima and delphine up or walks really loudly to alert them that he is there. he is usually someone who likes to start work early, but… he starts coming in later because he’s seen things that he Did Not Want To See. he is unable to make eye contact with cosima for a week after she was going to run to the kitchen to grab breakfast naked but didn’t know he was there. poor guy.

6. one way in which I relate to this character: Uncomfortable Chortling™.

7. thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character: Uncomfortable Chortling™.8. cinnamon roll or problematic fave?: cinnamon roll. the purest one. he just really wants to help his bro.

art

1. sexuality headcanon: bi art woulda been cool.

2. otp: safety and happiness. i don’t know what we know about his ex but if it was healthy and loving but just dissolved bc of him working so much then maybe he could reconnect with her?

3. brotp: beth and art 5ever

4. notp: sarah. They Are Friends.

5. first headcanon that pops into my head: is such a good dad. plays dress up and does tea parties and when charlotte is having behavioral problems at school takes the time to talk to her and figures out it’s bc she’s bored and too smart. had to be forced to stop bed time stories bc ‘that’s for babies, dad!!!’ was a little more than heartbroken. is the dad that runs out onto the soccer field when his kid is taken down and appears to be injured. cries openly when he finds out that helena named her son after him.

6. one way in which I relate to this character: Guy Who Just Wants His Friends To Get Their Lives Together But Doesn’t Worry About His Own.

7. thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character: in the finale there was this shot of him while he was helping helena give birth. and i think they went too close with a short lens while he was laughing because his face kinda looked distorted. and it was a nice laughing face but the distortion kinda scared me. made me think something bad was about to happen WHICH WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN OKAY8. cinnamon roll or problematic fave?: cinnamon roll

2. otp: how just so totally alive she still is and how she killed freshanando

3. brotp: nicki? nikki? however you spell her name. and also beth.

5. first headcanon that pops into my head: got pretty much all of her money from embezzling and investing. she only embezzled like $2,000 from each corporation, but she was so good at timing and watching the market she’s sitting on several million dollars. but she likes her trailer so she just gives the extra away as it comes in. at least now that she has family to gift it to.

cosima enrolls at University of Toronto and finds the exact amount for her tuition is wired to her account.

delphine needs to buy a whole new wardrobe and rebuild her life and an envelope full of cash is waiting in the mailbox at the comic book store. (not the point right now, but where THE FUCK was she getting her clothes???)

alison is worried about the kids’ college tuition bc of their year of unemployment plus drug dealing and gets a transfer.

sarah takes some time in finding a job and is worried about making a payment on S’s house but then it magically goes away and so does the next one.

etc. etc. and she never runs out of money, but everybody else just thinks she’s being so generous. and they never ask for more, bc god how could you ask for more after gifts like that. and so she just keeps accruing more and more interest so she starts just dumping all this money on charities.

6. one way in which I relate to this character: i really wanna blow frickinanderino up.

7. thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character:i don’t think there was anything... but i don’t really remember much of s4... maybe the driving with the sheep mask on? that was so dangerous and extra.8. cinnamon roll or problematic fave?: cinnamon roll

rachel

1. sexuality headcanon: i’ve been seeing some people talking about lesbian rachel and i can get behind that. like seeing the number of clones showing signs of ‘sexual fluidity’ or whatever the book phrased it as. and she doesn’t want to be like them. so she forces it down to be The Perfect Subject. then later realizes that that made those subjects of more interest to some of the scientists. or she never considered it for herself because they always gave her male monitors so she just didn’t think about it. there’s some angst there.

2. otp: propane.

3. brotp: who was the guy she texted ‘update pls’? bc whoever she felt she could text slang with they must’ve been close.

4. notp: paul, but i mean it this time.

5. first headcanon that pops into my head: go read @sharkodactyl s fic the sun that’s setting in the east.

6. one way in which I relate to this character: is a sucker and would do anything for an authority figure’s approval.

7. thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character:anything to do with ferfuckle. honey. love yourself.8. cinnamon roll or problematic fave?: Problematic. not even fave. i felt for rachel, but it was very cool_motive_still_murder.gif. unlike with other characters who did bad things, her intent was to harm. even if it was misguided revenge against the wrong people. though i am glad that she got out alive and can try to live a life that she actually chooses rather than what is chosen for her.

krystal

1. sexuality headcanon: idk.. maybe pansexual? or she just doesn’t do labels and has a whole speech about it.

2. otp: brie. they even have a canon ship name in kay-bee.

3. brotp: manicures, mimosas, & croissants as described here. but basically krystal, adele, and delphine. they go for brunch, get their nails done, and tipsily validate the everliving fuck out of each other.

4. notp: paul, cuz why not.

5. first headcanon that pops into my head: bc kay-bee is obviously canon... after the incident with brie’s hair krystal is extra careful when she plays with her hair. and she takes extra special but sneaky looks to see if she’s getting any bald spots. in short, she’s worried about her girlfriend and wants to make sure she’s okay.

6. one way in which I relate to this character: does The Most but is dead wrong.

7. thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character: the fact that john and graeme didn’t know that she was based on a kroll show bit and accidentally kinda stole her.8. cinnamon roll or problematic fave?: the cinnamoniest of rolls

adele

1. sexuality headcanon: i feel like she is a straight person? she just reminds me of my country relatives who have ‘live, laugh, love’ signs in their homes. idk why.

2. otp: getting help for her drinking problem and getting un disbarred. re barred?

3. brotp: as stated above: manicures, mimosas, & croissants.

4. notp: fuck it. paul.

5. first headcanon that pops into my head: she’s scarily good at video games. she didn’t even realize it until she sat down to play with the kids, at their request, and finds out that she can’t stop winning. the kids then ask her to leave.

tara/willow:

when or if I started shipping it: pretty much immediately.

my thoughts: tara maclay deserved better in all situations. she was emotionally manipulated and abused by her family and then had her mind fucked over by glory and willow and i hated that the writers did that to them.

What makes me happy about them: they are two women who so completely understand each other.

What makes me sad about them: the ending (and above “thoughts”)

Things done in fanfic that annoys me: i’ve never actually read buffy fanfic, i stopped reading fanfic before i became a fan.

Why I like them

Alison has the toughest time coming to terms with being a clone. She’s fiercely and frighteningly competent and even though this whole clone thing has fractured her sense of self and made it that much more difficult to maintain her lifestyle (and makes her doubt and question this life that she’s built), although she doesn’t trust Sarah and in some way probably blames her for what happened to Beth, she’s always ready to launch herself into the mix from whatever sideplot she’s been relegated to when her help is needed.

Why I don’t

Her stories are...boring and so far removed from the main action like 90% of the time. And so her wants seem kind of ridiculous in light of everything going on in the main story thread.

Variations Under Domestication is just so....iconic. BUT ALSO: Entangled Bank

Favorite season/movie

season 1! Also season 4: I was never prouder of her than when she held her own, kept her chin up, even when threatened with a defective gene-altering maggot-bot.

Everytime she shuts Donnie down “You didn’t pose it as a question, Donnie”/”She eats frozen bread and she’s murdered people” and for completely different reasons “I'm a horrible person. I'm not even a real person.”

the magenta leopard print hip hop abs outfit. JUST KIDDING it’s the Blood Ties rehearsal outfit because it was my first cloneplay (and what officially pulled me into Clone Club)

I still see a lot of posts that associate Alison with wine/being drunk and joke about Alison and wine/being drunk and....she’s worked so hard. She drank water at her own celebration dinner. Let her be.

Solo Reacting to Orphan Black: Ep 501, “The Few Who Dare”

In the Neolution Survivalist Summer Camp

The Setup: The fifth and final season of Orphan Black has started and I (Miri) am the only one of us currently caught up and watching, but I’m far to obsessed to simply think my thoughts to myself. So here goes our first stab at a current weekly reaction type thing, organized by clone. This one is quite late due to a conspiracy of my DVR, tumblr, and the Pride parade happening this past weekend, but you can expect the rest within 24 hours of the episode dropping. Stay tuned!

***SPOILERS!!!***

SARAH: Sarah Manning is in a hoodie again and all is right with the world, except for literally everything else that’s happening to/around her.

Sarah having 2% battery stresses me out more than the blood on her face.

I think Sarah leaving Cosima in the neolution survivalist summer camp really shows how much she has grown and come to trust her sisters. Season 1 Sarah wouldn’t have trusted anyone to do anything dangerous or in general.

COSIMA: I really felt like taking the time to remove that coat was going to come back to bite Cosima in the ass. (I was wrong.)

I’m really digging the Cosima/Charlotte relationship.

Did she really try to inject her uterus blind??? That is insane. I don’t even know where exactly my uterus is, let alone how to stab a precise bit of of it with a LONG ASS NEEDLE. (Don’t @ me, there are a lot of organs in that area.)

RACHEL: This version of Rachel is freaking me out more than normal. I can’t decide if she’s a true believer or not. I know Rachel believes deeply in her own importance (because the alternative is accepting that she is just like the clones she had killed, and that her handlers could do the same to her at any time). I can see her giving herself over to a cause, as long as it’s one that centers her.

I could also 112% see her as being full of shit. Honestly, if we didn’t have evidence to the contrary I would be convinced the Mysterious Founder was dead and she was conning them all with it.

Rachel’s cape dress situation is incredible.

Is anyone else having trouble recognizing Rachel with the slightly different hair? I keep thinking it’s a new clone or something. I’m so used to the ultra straight/severe bob that this Wealthy Mom volumed up version reads so differently.

HELENA: STICK IN BABY??!?!?!?

ALISON: I’m really excited for her to have more to do next week.

EVERYONE ELSE:

I’m sorry, but did the cutesy survivalist say that her name is Mud? Is this a name (or a shortening of a name) in a language/culture I’m not familiar with, or a nature thing? Also, I like her hair.

Art’s new evil partner is amazing. I hate her. She’s fabulous.

I adore Donny’s obsession with the whole loon call/roughing it thing. Major props to everyone on this show who is not a clone--it’s easy to see the INCREDIBLE work Tatiana Maslany is doing, but the rest of them are acting out different relationships with different characters played by the same person.

And finally: WHAT THE HECK IS THE THING IN THE WOODS?!??!!?!?
