HELENA & SARAH MANNING Orphan Black (2013 - 2017)

I have worked with actors for over 25 years. Some very talented actors — including a future Tony/BAFTA nominee. But Tatiana Maslany in Orphan Black confounds me. I have to continually remind myself that this is one actress. Helena to Rachel to Cosima.

When Allison disappears for a couple episodes I think “I wonder if she had a conflict? are they covering a pregnancy or something?” before remembering that IT’S THE SAME ACTRESS!

The voices, the physicality - far beyond the costuming because there’s the times the clones swap and there are subtle ways to tell the differences.

Ari Collins’ Castor clones are way more similar. And things like the Battlestar Cylons don’t touch what Tatiana accomplished.

It’s an acting masterclass that she should have won way more awards for.

I’ve just finished Season 2 on my rewatch and it’s just crazy. Plus the character development of the core clones in what for them is basically 2 months? And from here out Helena’s pregnancy shows the rest of the series is less than 9 months. 50 episodes of a year in the lives of this family of Sestras.

really special detail I’m noticing in orphan black echoes is how keeley hawes does such a good job of conveying the mannerisms Kira would have being raised by the people she was raised by. She moves especially like S a lot of the time which makes sense since she was raised by her for a long time, but sometimes reminds me of Cosima, sometimes Sarah, sometimes even Alison. It’s a really small detail but it feels special to me as a die hard original Orphan Black fan, because those are the real echoes of the show and characters we knew and loved

So hear me out, I figured out why Sarah didn’t bother to show up in Echoes even after hearing about Kira’s “accomplishments”-

Sarah is still “pissed” that despite her giving birth to Kira and them sharing a bloodline, Kira MANNING grew up to be Delphine 2.0. How ridiculous?! 😤

Jk! It’s just my head canon since in the original Orphan Black series Sarah and Felix always had issues trusting Delphine. Imagine one day Sarah suddenly realized just how much her own daughter is like a mini Delphine especially with her passion in sciences and her dubious scientific morality/ethics 😂 no hard feelings of course, but it’d be a pretty funny scene to watch.

In all seriousness, I think Sarah would only get low-key annoyed (not in a bad way, just reminded of the rough start they had with Delphine) for a second, but then she’d be proud to see that despite her tough childhood Kira grew up to be such a brilliant driven woman! If her daughter looks up to Delphine or any other aunties, sure, they are all brave, smart, and resilient women. Kira’s just so lucky to have all these strong female role models to look up to in their family.
