Interview with Mark C. Daniel

Mark C. Daniel recently released his new single "Lucky One"

STRATA: Your music seems to hold some vibe back to those Hall & Oates and Bryan Adams days. Is that the era your musical influences came from?

Mark C.Daniel: Thank you STRATA for your interest! Not necessarily.... coincidentally, my drummer Mickey Curry is the drummer for both Bryan Adams & Hall and Oates, lol .. I’m a 90’s kid so I was most impressionable during the grunge/90’s alternative rock era. I really don’t pull from one era in particular at this point or at any recent points in my life. In short .. I love great songs and passionate playing .. any era and any genre.

STRATA: "Lucky One" video development has a theatrical feel to it. How did the idea for the video come about? How do you feel it fits the lyrical content of your song?

Mark C. Daniel: The video was development & choreographed by Alison Cook-Beatty and performed by her dance company Alison-Cook-Beatty Dance. I’ve known Alison ever since we were kids in grade school, we went to High School together followed by her attending Boston Conservatory while I attended Berklee College of Music, which are across the street from each other. I’ve wanted to work with Alison for ages and when I received the first mix of the song, I called her. I sent a copy and a few weeks later she invited me to a dance studio. I was absolutely stunned when she played the song and the dance started to take form. I then contacted an incredibly talented director I work with, Tim O’Hanlon and voila.. here we are! I’m forever grateful to Allison and her extraordinary dancers as well as Tim and his team. I’m overjoyed with the result!

STRATA: How is the music scene where you perform most often?

Mark C. Daniel: Great!! There are many talented artists and musicians in Connecticut..full of inspiration !!

STRATA: Will rock and pop music always reach back to what it knows, or is rock possibly developing a new sound?

Mark C. Daniel: good question .. I’m not very good at predicting the future however it would be nice to think all genres could continue an amalgamation toward something newer. Takes courage for artists to do this …Songs and songwriting are the vehicles.

STRATA: What part do you think producers will continue to play in music development?

Mark C. Daniel: depends on a genre.. some genre are highly dependent on Producers.. today, the term Producer could mean anything from “Big studio budget” Producer to “Bedroom, living in your parent’s house” Producer.. both of which can be highly successful both artistically and commercially.

STRATA: Reading over your press, it seems your direction is to release new music about twice a year. Do you write and release music for yourself or for your listeners or for the sake of both?

Mark C. Daniel: Music like all the finest things in life is always best shared. It does indeed come from a personal space, even a narrative, but we as humans require “a witness” someone or “someone’s” to share it with.

STRATA: For your listeners and your growing platform - what is Mark C. Daniel presenting in 2024?

Mark C. Daniel: the best songs I can write along with playing to serve the song… and perhaps a little “monkeying around”, Lol !

#portrait of alison #postmark for danger #1955 #british cinema #crime film #guy green #francis durbridge #terry moore #robert beatty #william sylvester #josephine griffin #geoffrey keen #allan cuthbertson #henry oscar #william lucas #terence alexander #bruno barnabe #stuart saunders #frank thornton #marianne stone #a classic durbridge pot boiler full of twists and turns and asshole policemen. as was fairly common at the time this was a film #adaptation of a tv serial that had aired earlier the same year. for this film version the leads were all replaced with americans #(and canadian beatty). in fact the only actor to recreate their role from the series was william lucas as a shady car dealer. the series #had been lucas' tv debut and rather neatly this became his film debut. he's wonderfully slimy. the rest of the cast are all good #particularly strong is josephine graham as beatty's delightfully charming model. sadly she bows out fairly early #a pacey little thriller which stacks up red herring on top of confusing detail until you're almost as baffled as poor beatty. in other word #a classic durbridge brain bender. lots of twists and turns along the way but the final twist is a little too clearly signposted #a slightly earlier twist in the third act is much more surprising and well handled. oh and beatty actually acts sensibly for a character in #this type of film and willingly contacts the police. pity they then suspect him of being the villain behind it all #sadly the tv version is believed to be an entirely lost programme

Happy Friday, everyone! I hope your week has gone well. :) It’s been a stressful/anxiety-filled week for me, but at the same time this was also my last week ever of grad school, so there’s that positivity. And I’m getting my second vaccine shot tomorrow, so hooray for that. How are you all doing? I hope your week wasn’t too bad and that things are okay for everyone. :) Things are still so weird in the world and I know it’s been hard for a lot of people.

There are some really great deals for books that are on sale today, so be sure to have a look if you want to get some books for weekend reading. :) I read Yangsze Choo’s The Ghost Bride years ago and I’ve been meaning to re-read it and read her latest release, she’s a fantastic writer! Alison Weir is also a great choice, and I’ve heard good things about a lot of these. I was sent a copy of Ninth Street Women by the publisher back when it came out and it’s a huge tome, so definitely get some bang for your buck on that one, haha.

the cliff

this is as far as I can reach. my tendons are aching to reach you; I am enough to save you but I am still just a little too far to grab you if you do not pull your body toward me. I know that falling is always an option but this time there is another one: to grab my hand and let me pull you away from the cliff that calls to the part of you that is romantic with death. if you continue to grab at life with your eyes but not with your hands you will break your back on impact with the bottom of the canyon. who knows how long it will take you to hit there but it will only take a few milliseconds for you to fall too far for me to reach. you will see the hand that didn’t save you pull back to the side as the distance grows and that will be the last time you ever see a hand reach out to you. the canyon will get darker and deeper like falling into the throat of death but your sleeves will flutter as your travel like the wings of the angels you hope will catch you (but you are not sure). you’ll wonder if death is as beautiful as the poets say but as it separates from your soul you will wonder if life could have been too.
