10/12/22.
Libertino Records (Wales) have been putting out great music for several years. At the beginning, there were no physical releases, but that is changing. First, just last month we mentioned the great Ynys LP. Before that, we mentioned Alex Dingley.
Now we have Sister Wives. The band definitely recall the work of Look Blue, Go Purple, Francisca Griffin or older posts like Would-Be-Goods, Susan or Seablite.

Review: Benediction (2021)
Saw Benediction (2021) tonight. I am simply floored. Absolute masterclasses in understated queer subtlety that matches his letters and writing spectacularly.
The use of his and Wilfred Owen's poems over real footage of WWI is jaw dropping and brings them to life like nothing else with very powerful readings.
I loved the way Sassoon's relationship with Wilfred Owen is implicitly queer in the way their letters are, but how far it went remains a mystery. Only Owen's letters to Sassoon survive, most having to get through the censors from the front. The letters and papers Owen possessed at his death were defaced and redacted with India ink by his brother to hide that he was gay.
But then we see Sassoon in a string of very explicitly gay relationships and Sassoon's sexuality is made very clear. And yet so much is a constant subtle dance among public society. So much of the film is said between the lines and in desert dry barbs, fast as lightening.
The editing has so many incredible juxtapositions. The way shots so often blur into different shots as memories bleeding into each other. It shows PTSD so well. And the physically acting is so good. The end worth just hiss facial expressions and the music is done of the finest physical acting I've seen. For a poet, there are no words left.
And we are left not with Siegfried's own words, but Wilfred Owen's. In a graveyard now a lifetime apart. And simultaneously with no time at all to erase that loss.
"All's Fair In Love And War" by Alex Dingley is a wonderful short comic about Sassoon and Owen and how their relationship changed how war is written about by the people who lived through it. How it immortalized those horrors and in his grief Sassoon immortalized Owen.
issuu
But largely the film is about Sassoon's life after the war. Struggling to build a life when he's still haunted by it. Trying to decide what he wanted out of it. And the delicate queer struggle between who and how society wants him to be and who he personally wants to be and what he wants to say in the face of it.
Really brilliant film. Highly recommended. A complicated but quiet queer film worthy of the complicated but quiet man it's about.

I'm delighted to share the cover of Ana Mardoll's latest book: Cinder the Fireplace Boy and Other Gayly Grimm Tales. The story collection of classic fairytales is lovingly retold, featuring characters who receive wonderfully queer happily-ever-afters. Containing queer, trans, nonbinary, lesbian, gay, bisexual, ace, and aro rep, there’s a little something for everyone! It's always a huge pleasure working with Ana (and be sure to check out No Man of Woman Born too). It's got additional gorgeous interior illustrations by Alex Dingley, and will be released January 4, 2022. Preorders are available now on Amazon, Apple, B&N and more :)
Once upon a time there lived...a beautiful prince who kissed a frog. A cinder-smudged child who hid a secret. A princess who climbed a long braid of golden hair for love. A thumb-sized boy with the courage of a giant. And a valiant little tailor whose wit was as sharp as her needle. Let these new takes on the Brothers Grimm warm your heart and nurture your yearning to see yourself reflected in beloved favorites.

9/9/22.
This seems like the perfect time to remind us of the blog rules. The music must be on Bandcamp and there must be a physical release. While Ynys doesn't have any physical release on Bandcamp, Libertino Records (Wales) does have the self-titled album available both as an LP and CD.
Ynys appears to be the work of Dylan Hughes (Aberystwyth, Wales). I've got to say, Welsh pop has a distinct sound. Hughes immediately brought to mind the excellent work of Race Horses and Super Furry Animals.
Libertino Records has been on my radar for quite a while. Be sure to check out Alex Dingley who made his album with the help of Tim Presley and Cate Le Bon.

Alex Dingley's Wonderfully Bizarre New Video Creeps Into The Light
With the impending arrival on these shores of his third album - Beat The Babble on Libertino Records - comes a haunting, beguiling and ever-so-slightly bonkers new video for Alex Dingley's single Not Alone In The Dark.
Finding Alex caked in flaking grease-paint with a tin can strapped to his head, wobbling unsteadily whilst clutching a pipe in the manner of a wise old professor left to gather dust (and flour) in an abandoned bakery, he's accompanied by a small gathering of members from the Dingley family similarly attired.
Shot in black and white and reminiscent of a peak behind the radiator in David Lynch's Eraserhead, the video is a curious contrast to the tender wonkiness of the track itself. Alex's voice on the edge of brittle emotional collapse as he trills "What's real is meaningless" with a strange sense of comfort and hope, the bizarre family feast occuring in the background churning the stomach a little as the song itself reassures.
It's a strange balancing act, ably pulled off by prolific music video director Casey Raymond, and a nice introduction to this third album which is an interesting stylistic shift for Dingley, produced by Cate Le Bon and Tim Presley, taking a more stripped bare approach than his previous two LPs (2007's I Lost My Honest In The Grass and 2012's Built In The Ruins Of Monday Morning), Beat The Babble pushes Dingley's lyrics to the fore and is a beautiful, plaintive record that I cheekily grabbed on import as soon as it was released in the US, and I strongly urge you to pick up a copy when the album makes its debut in the UK soon.
‘Beat The Babble’ will be available via Libertino Records / Pyst Distribution on limited vinyl with new art and digital on June 15th.

Standout tune If I Asked You To Dance is a compelling composition all about trials and tribulations one goes through while spending the evening dancing away.
