Joey Drew is Gay and there's no way around it (Pt 5)

So what about the women in Joey's life? Well, we hear a fair amount about two women in particular- Lottie, and Abby Lambert.

First, there's Lottie, a telecommunications girl who befriends Joey. She takes a quick liking to him, but Joey seems to have an aversion to any displays of affection she shows him.

In fact, he claims to "not have time for girls" in general, and this seems to be his reasoning behind not pursuing Lottie romantically.

Immediately following this...watertight explanation, Joey goes on a little side quest. See, Lottie notices odd initials on his boots:

She goes on a long search to find the previous owner, updating Joey with her findings often. However, she gets very down on herself when the effort seems to lead to nowhere, and grows weary as many of the men she's been sending messages to are continuously reported dead.

Note how Joey responds to her more somber attitude as the days go on:

He creates an elaborate lie in order to "solve" the mystery, entertain her, and spare her some of the pain of her depression.

It seems the "I don't have time and I'm too selfish" excuse doesn't really hold up. How odd, I was quite sure Joey Drew was being honest and introspective here.

This story gets even weirder, though. Nathan points out via footnote that he couldn't ever find the correspondences between Joey and Lottie- so the legitimacy of this tale is immediately called into question.

If it is completely fabricated, then Joey literally made up a story in which he keeps 99 feet away at all times from an extremely attractive and sweet woman who was very interested in him. If this is the case, it also seems to be some hardcore fishing for cool guy points. Joey comes out looking like a saint, AND he doesn't actually have to go out and catch girl cooties.

This brings us to the end of Lottie's tale, so let's talk about the (only?) confirmed real woman friend of Joey's.

Abby Lambert is the initial artist friend that introduced Joey to Henry. She seems to be his closest woman friend and confidant, and he ends up trusting her to run the art department as a whole.

Notice both her and Joey's reaction when she invites him as her date to an art salon.

In the middle of the skit they perform at said art salon, Joey takes a second to emphasize that they were just friends- an already stated fact.

It's all fake, but even during something so simple, he still makes it a point to clarify that they aren't involved romantically in any way.

If Abby and Lottie are anything to go by, he has a weirdly hypervigilant attitude when it comes to romance with women.

Regarding Abby specifically, here's more food for thought.

While not outright stated, Abby is very queer-coded herself. She's outside the "norm" for women at the time, both in wardrobe choice and attitude. She has a commanding presence, a streak of "rude" humor, and seems to be uncomfortable in dresses, preferring not to wear them at all if she can help it.

While there is no outright confirmation of her sexuality or identity, she sits outside the strict male/female roles of American society at the time.

This has no bearing on Joey's sexuality in a direct sense, but it still does beg the question: could there be a reason why Joey felt more comfortable around a woman who was not as rigid in her gender presentation? He doesn't seem to care that she wears men's suits, in fact he seems to be drawn towards her differences rather than repelled by them.

Even if there is no gaydar involved in how they found each other, there is a marked difference between the women Joey keeps close (Abby), versus the women Joey does not keep so close (Lottie.)

Now, to attempt to end this juggernaut. How about I cram in some odds and ends in the final part? Because yes, believe it or not, there's STILL MORE.

Citadel - a completely mediocre spy drama with very little new to tell....

Finished Citadel last night. Overall, a very ordinary show which is derivative of every spy movie or show that has been made in the past. Everything in the show is very surface level. I can completely believe all the news of production issues for this show because, while expensive looking in the action, it doesn't feel like the show justifies the budget. There are a bunch of sets that are reused. There are a handful of action sequences, but not even all that many. The run time of the episodes are fairly short. It feels like a show that was reshot multiple times and retrofitted. Frankly, the biggest issue with the show is how predictable it is. The show makes a big deal about who is the traitor that sold out Citadel to Manticore, but it isn't as if there are more than 2 suspects. The 2 leads are the only potential suspects and Nadia's secret is pretty easy to figure out. Which really leaves Mason. The reason for his betrayal is kind of half assed. Frankly, the only character arc that is somewhat interesting is Mason/Kyle's, given the ridiculous situation he's in. It isn't particularly well developed but at least the situation the character is in is interesting. He has 2 spy wives from Citadel with a daughter from each, one of whom is a woman whose memory he apparently wiped himself in order to protect the other. And he has memories of both Kyle and Mason. And he knows he's the one who sold out Citadel and that Dahlia is his mother. His situation is so bizarre that its almost comical. In that way, I am curious to see what he does. None of the characters stand out. Stanley Tucci was one the early highlights but he barely has a presence in the back half of the season. Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas both have a history of much better work in other shows. They have chemistry and do a decent job but their relationship is very half baked and rushed. I mean, I didn't like Quantico all that much, but Priyanka was honestly better on that show, and she has a history of much more nuanced work in Indian films. Richard Madden has done much more complex and interesting work in Eternals and Bodyguard in recent times. Apart from the leads and Tucci, Lesley Manville is the only actor that has any substantial screen time. She does fine but it isn't as if this role is a stretch for an actress of her caliber. Ashleigh Cummins as Abby/Celeste is decent but the possibility of what happens with her character in the future is more interesting than what actually happens this season. The action is fun and the show is relatively fast paced. Hopefully with season 1, the Russos have ironed out the production issues and they can make a better season 2.

Il était méfiant, et en plus, tu l'intimidais très facilement, avec ton charisme naturel. Parfois, il lui arrivait de se surprendre à t'observer ; il regardait tes yeux, qui semblaient vides, contrastant avec ton sourire plein d'espièglerie. Il s'attardait sur l'écharpe que tu portais constamment, comme si tu cachais le plus dangereux des secrets autour de ton cou. Shel n'avait peut-être que cinq ans, mais c'était déjà le plus éveillé des petits garçons. Il avait compris que tu paniquais, si on se mettait à s'agiter soudainement autour de toi. Il savait que tu passais le plus de temps à l'extérieur parce que tu ne supportais pas de passer des heures entières entre quatre murs. Chaque jour que la nature faisait, il t'analysait un peu plus, comme les parties d'échecs qu'il jouait avec son père. Il ne fallait surtout pas prononcer ton nom de famille, parce que sinon tu te rétractais aussitôt. Te toucher sans que tu t'en aperçoives était inconcevable, il se débrouillait souvent pour que Liddy soit suffisamment occupée pour ne pas te surprendre. En fait, sans s'en rendre compte, il cherchait à te protéger à sa manière. Tu devais peut-être penser qu'il te détestait, mais la vérité, c'est qu'il cherchait à te connaître pour pouvoir mieux te défendre. Et bien sûr, il n'avait pas pensé à tout simplement venir toquer à la porte de ta chambre, te poser des questions et attendre impatiemment tes réponses. Il était curieux, mais il était prudent ; on ne s'approche pas d'une bête sans s'être renseignée dessus auparavant. Parce que oui, c'est comme ça qu'il avait fini par te voir : comme une bête blessée, tu affichais un façade imprenable et inébranlable, alors qu'en-dessous, tu n'étais que les ruines d'un manoir autrefois splendide.

Joey Drew is Gay and there's no way around it (Pt 2)

In Illusion of Living, Joey claims that he was the one who created Bendy. In reality, Henry was the one who ultimately put pen to paper and created Bendy, Boris and Alice. Again, there's possessiveness over Bendy here, but that isn't all. Remember when I said in the previous part that Joey viewed Bendy as his literal son? So, the funny thing about that is...Henry created Bendy...and from Joey's perspective, his son.

Henry created his son.

And even if that's still a reach, Henry created the entity that was one of the most important things in Joey's life-his muse, messenger, and avenue through which he communicated his stories and ideas to the world. (Basically, his favorite OC.)

Things start off pretty swimmingly in terms of their friendship.

Joey was the one who got Henry set up working at the bookstore. (Apparently he also found him more complex than he initially thought.)

Things only pick up steam from here. When Joey finally does see Henry's art, he seems to have a strong reaction.

Joey has a "lightbulb moment" at the sight of Henry's cartoony style. He doesn't stop at the art, though.

(Joey, did he tackle what was right in front of him, or did you just want him to tackle what was in front of him? Be honest, now.)

Notice Abby's reaction. She sees how quickly he gravitates towards Henry's art, and the man himself.

Henry also seems stunned to silence by the high praise Joey gives him, which is a fair reaction to being told he might chart the course of the rest of someone's life.

Notice how Joey can't explain why he had such a sudden fascination with cartoons, he just "felt" it.

Pardon my french, but Abby seems to either be worried that he’s thinking with his dick, or not thinking at all. (Probably both.) Despite Abby's reservations, when Joey keeps his insistence that he wants to get into cartoons, she knows Henry is the man for the job.

And her intuition about bringing them together as business partners paid off.

Henry co-founded the studio with Joey, and by all surrounding context we're given, Joey seemed to be perfectly content with this setup. That is, until their eventual falling out.

We don't know the nitty gritty specifics of their falling out, but we know a few things. For one, it was brutal, which Nathan helps confirm via footnote.

Secondly, we know Henry moved to California. That's all the way across the US. Thirdly, we know Henry had a wife, Linda.

So the guy that helped him actualize his dream, created his SON/favorite OC, and was probably his best friend at the time, fell out with him and moved all the way across the country with his wife (and assumedly didn't talk to him again.)

I would find it hard to believe that Joey was solely using Henry similar to what he did with Susie, because there are very curt admissions throughout Illusion of Living that he can't entirely erase Henry from the narrative, as badly as he wants to. Joey couldn't get Henry out of his mind. Of course he didn't treat Henry fairly, and of course Henry had every right to leave. But he had a strong connection to Henry whether he wanted to admit it or not.

There's no proof that he felt romantically about Henry. There is, however, proof that Joey wanted a family, viewed Bendy as his son, admits he still admired Henry after the fallout, and seemed perfectly content living out his wildest dreams with the man who, from his perspective, created HIS SON.

But we're not done yet. See, Henry is FAR from the only man who had a great deal of relevance in Joey's life.
