On the way back from Tea Country with Chakra-poisoned Kakashi tryna "casually" fish for some info before Sakura comes in with the one-hit KO on accident.
So she's got some complicated feelings for Kakashi as well, though they're a lot milder than what she feels about Sasuke.
There's a moment in my AU where Sakura goes through a deep reflection ritual, in which she has to face Inner Sakura -who is representative of all the ugly truths her day-to-day self hasn't been able to face- and come to terms with who she is.
During that time, she's got to face the music.
The music:
Sasuke is the last prodigal son of a clan that was brutally butchered. He's a genius with one of the most powerful dojutsu out there (that he has no idea how to use) and is coming in hot with more baggage than an airport terminal.
Naruto is not normal. She doesn't know what he is (as in-canon, she finds out after the time-skip and the Sakura from above is right on the cusp of Shippuden), but there's nothing normal about a kid who can pull wild orange chakra and who can fight Gaara's tailed beast and come out on top. He's got the personal attention of the Hokage, but the entire village has banded against him for some reason. He's special.
Kakashi is a war veteran turned Jounin and an infamous ANBU captain (I headcanon that some ANBU names are leaked specifically to generate a healthy level of fear/caution among other villages- which is why we know of Itachi/Kakashi/Shisui very publically) and is ALSO the last prodigal son of an old noble clan.
(No way a bookworm like Sakura didn't consume every publically available scroll on Konoha clans).
It doesn't take the big brains to figure out that he got team 7 specifically to help deal with Sasuke's trauma/teach him about the Sharingan, and put a leash on Naruto (and in the future, when she finds out that Madara was able to control the Kyuubi with the Sharingan as well as the knowledge that Kakashi was Minato's student it becomes even clearer why he got the Sasuke/Naruto combo.)
And Sakura? Sakura is a civilian. No clan, no dojutsu, nothing to her name except great chakra control. She's the literal meat in the meat-grinder of the military machine of Konoha, the acceptable sacrifice in a group of otherwise invaluable shinobi. She's just a...girl. (And it doesn't help that she was obsessed with Sasuke instead of training, furthering the gulf between her and Kakashi.)
Kakashi was absolutely not built to handle her- in fact, Kakashi has NO idea how to relate who hasn't gone through a mountain's worth of trauma or someone who hasn't been ingrained in the shinobi-as-a-tool lifestyle, and even then, he's not fully equipped to handle people who have (lmao Sasuke). Not to mention the man is a prodigy- he has no idea how to teach people who have to work hard to get somewhere in life. How do you teach someone if you've never had to 'work hard' to get there yourself?
So, Sakura understands that Kakashi was put in one of the most ridiculous situations of his career- a situation he had NO idea how to handle. She can forgive him for that. BUT, she can't forgive him for not trying his best.
Sakura spent a lot of time coming to terms with the fact that she rushed into the Chidori/Rasengan combo without a single idea of what she would do, but...Kakashi was a big reason for that.
She was HIS responsibility, and he fumbled that bag. Whatever his reasoning, whether it was to 'protect' her, or whether he thought she was worthless, whatever: he should have TRIED.
Kakashi was an adult with resources aplenty. He recognized that she had stellar chakra control but never bothered to teach her genjutsu or direct her to teachers who could pick up the slack.
And after the accident, he abandoned her again. Being forgotten in lieu of Sasuke and Naruto hurt...but she could heal. Being abandoned as some kind of martyr to Kakashi's failures as a teacher? It's gonna take a while for Kakashi to make that up to her...if he can muster the courage to face her.
Sakura finally understands why he preferred the memorial stone to the living. He already failed the dead, and it's easier to wallow in self-flagellation than it is to try and step up for the living.
Sakura stopped being a coward some time ago, and when Kakashi finally does the same, she'll forgive him.
Thank you so much for sticking with this wall of text! And thank you so much anon for the question! Once again, I really appreciate all the kind words people have been throwing my way. <3 <3 <3

Have a happy Valentine’s Day! Hokage daughter au?
a continuation of 1 2
Tsume likes Minato. He's one of the strongest ninjas she's ever come across and he's an exceptionally fair hokage while not going too far that it becomes a weakness.
He is not, however, an exceptionally good father. She would have described him as a good husband, before, but Kushina has never been able to forgive him for what he did to their daughter.
Kushina is still stuck on that day in more ways than one. The combination of a difficult birth and the fox demon ripping itself from her wrecked her body and chakra coils to an extent that she's barely an active duty ninja. But it's not just physical. Kushina lives in fear of that moment repeating, of finding herself powerless and trapped as her husband chooses protecting their village over their child, and it clouds her judgement.
Tsume can't fault Minato's choice, personally, considering what was at stake, nor Kushina's reaction when she woke up to find her infant daughter turned into a demon container.
She can't fault either of them for that day, but she faults them both for every day that came after.
Minato finds looking at his daughter to be painful, sees her as his failure as a father and a husband, and Kushina only sees her as the child she failed to protect from the one person she never thought she'd have to protect her from.
Naruto is so much more than that.
The girl graduated Top Kunoichi. She stopped a coup and saved the Uchiha as an academy student, for fuck's sake. She's spent her whole childhood getting into trouble, outrunning ANBU and hiding from her own clansmen when she breaks in to pet the puppies or goad Kiba into playing with her.
Anyone with eyes can see that whatever ill effects were supposed to occur from her containing the nine tails aren't there. She's strong and smart and clever which is even more important than being smart. She regularly beats clan heirs into the dirt and runs circles around whatever poor ANBU has been assigned to watch her.
But Minato and Kushina have never been able to see their daughter properly.
"What are you hiding from me?" she asks Naruto after another training session where she and Sasuke show up clearly having already trained together. She wishes she could spy on them, but it's in the Uchiha compound, which won't let her dogs in, and there's no Uchiha that will betray Naruto.
She grins, arms raised as she stretches her arms above her head. "Me? Hiding things? I'm an open book, Sensei."
Sakura scrunches her nose and Sasuke keeps his face carefully neutral in a way that means he's laughing at her.
Tsume growls at them but lets it go - she has a clan to run and training these brats takes up enough of her time as it is.
Besides. What she doesn't know, she doesn't have to report to the hokage.
Which she's pretty sure is the reason Naruto's not telling her.
Clever girl.

how's sasori obligatory round of book club go?
bc his role in reborn au is "mildly stalks team 4" i'm imagining 1) he's never actually formally invited, but 2) he just shows up for random meetings. it gets to the point where it's like "oh, akasuna no sasori shows up as a side character in this one, are you inviting him?"
but the FIRST time, tori has been busily "befriending" a random woman she found in the chunin break room. she walks her from work to get drinks before the meeting so her "friend" absolutely cannot escape. and then at the bar, fucking sasori shows up
tori: how did you even get in here?!
sasori: i was in the area. what are you doing i want you to look at improvements i made to one of my mind control seals. maybe find itachi too he's into this
tori: NO i'm DOING SOMETHING
tori: here if you can't just wait a couple hours, we're doing a book of short stories this week. read at least one of them
the woman recognizes sasori and she's like. um i would like to leave? and tori is like NO NO BOOK CLUB IS STILL ON and then blocks every single attempt to leave or flag down ANBU. we are going to book club, okay, new best friend????
(sasori: this is a random desk-nin? wouldn't even make a good puppet)
so the three of them go to book club, which is hosted in the hokage's house, and kushina opens the door and is like. hmmm. then she goes to minato making a vegetable platter and she's like
kushina: hey yeah so you know how sasori is stalking my students
kushina: well he's here for book club
minato:
minato: did you let him in?
kushina: i mean yeah? he had a copy of the book
minato:
minato: huh
so sasori is just. there. he's read three out of six of the short stories and he was very strong opinions. also itachi shows up so book club turns out to be very convenient for sasori? so he's fine. he behaves. he doesn't take the drink kushina offers him. minato DOES go drop naruto off at sasuke's so he's not in the house, but like. sasori is a fine edition to book club. he has well articulated and thoughtful opinions and has no problem telling kakashi his opinions are stupid, which is a pretty good litmus test for not being someone who's cowed by authority
tori's new best friend is losing her mind. what the fuck is happening. why is hokage-sama okay with this. why does respected famous jounin hatake kakashi think one of the most infamous missing-nin alive being here is funny. only shisui looks even slightly concerned. and then she can't even SAY anything because what is she supposed to do? talk back to her boss or the three separate anbu captains present??? she thought tori was a civilian
as they're leaving book club, itachi vaguely wanders after tori and the rando woman (who tori will NOT let leave her) because sasori said he wanted to talk, and sasori is like "well if YOU'RE not going to use her as a test subject, can i?" and tori is like NO OBVIOUSLY NOT SHE'S MY BEST FRIEND
(itachi: your best friend is a 30 year old career chunin with a child?)
the chunin lady finally successfully executes the emergency alarm jutsu and itachi is like "hi, i'm the nearest anbu" and then "why did you even bother, did you really sit with him and hokage-sama in the same room and conclude this was an appropriate response?" so he's. unhelpful and mean.
so the woman has a breakdown right there in the streets and tori has to be physically dragged away from her. they go find deidara. tori is mad the whole time but sasori considers the evening a success
tori several days later: can you BELIEVE she doesn't want to talk to me anymore? she tried to get minato to ban me from the chunin break room

can you pleease talk about Shisui falling in love with his childhood girl best friend? i think that’d be so cute!
OH WHAT THE FUCK this is so good
obviously they meet in the academy. they get along like a house on fire instantly but they are sooooo chatty. the teacher probably always tries to seat them on opposite sides of the room but they still talk so damn much. it’s okay though because they’re both at the top of the class
they start to train together outside of the academy as they get older bc they’re kind of sick of everyone else not being able to keep up lol. even once they get put into genin teams they just show up at each other’s training sessions
shisui is so smug when he finally hits his growth spurt and gets taller than her
they’re pretty inseparable while they’re kids. she’s always at the uchiha compound and he teaches her all the ways to sneak in when the guards won’t let her in. he’s always hanging out with her clan members, helping all the old ladies and younger kids out. the grandmas LOVE him
it’s probably when he goes into ANBU that things start to change. maybe she goes into ANBU too but they’re deliberately separated. all of a sudden they’re barely seeing each other, so every time they catch up they feel like they’ve missed so much. shisui really struggles with this tbh he misses her a lot
so when he comes back from a long mission and she tells him she went on a date with someone, he convinces himself his annoyance is just frustration that he doesn’t know her as well as he used to. but he’s a smart guy and every time he sees her she’s becoming more beautiful and after a few months he’s like. fuck.
he’s not one to hide his feelings once he realises he’s fallen for her, especially if she’s going on dates with/getting attention from other guys. it’s just too hard for him to ignore. he gets a lot more flirtatious, gives her lots of compliments, generally just turns on the charm. then he panics and doesn’t talk to her for like a week. he’s so scared of ruining what they have, but also so scared of losing her to another guy. and she’s like ummmm shisui what’s going on
she probably does confront him tbh. she has to be an upfront person if he’s going to fall for her. hopefully she’s kind about it and just asks why he’s been strange with her, and if everything’s alright. and he can’t take it anymore he just has to confess. he won’t beat around the bush, just comes straight out and tells her he’s developed feelings for her
…if she doesn’t return the feelings, he’s pretty devastated. he might try and avoid her for a while just to let his own feelings settle down. he’ll definitely come back to their friendship and things will be pretty much the same as before, but he’ll always have those feelings for her a little bit, and he’ll spend a long time wondering what could have been
but if she DOES like him!!!! so romantic so good!!!!pls just let her kiss him instead of talking. he takes a few seconds to react and then he just wraps his arms around her and kisses her back hard. doesn’t let her go for a loooong time
they won’t make it official straight away, but it’s pretty obvious they’re dating. he gets a lot more touchy with her in public, always draping an arm round her shoulders, retying her hitai-ate for her after training, that kind of thing. and everyone in the village just thinks finally
in an AU where shisui lives, he’ll probably propose to her while they’re pretty young, realistically as soon as they’re out of ANBU. he already knows her like the back of his hand, he knows he wants to spend his life with her, so why wait? and the wedding is SO cute. he cries at the altar
side note. itachi loves this girl. her and shisui probably prank itachi so much but he doesn’t mind. he probably cries at the wedding too. and sasuke thinks both the boys are so cringe ew.

sure, canon's cool and all, but have you considered team ro au where sasuke is DEAD CONVINCED that Weasel is shisui and has this absolute vendetta against Weasel because he thinks Weasel's taking all his brother's time?
itachi is devastated, but can't say anything because, y'know, anbu secrets. accepts the kicks to his shins as punishment for being a bad brother.
shisui thinks this is the funniest fucking thing he's ever heard and absolutely does nothing to discourage sasuke. actively encourages it sometimes with comments like 'well, you've never seen Weasle and me in the same place....' and 'well, i am very good at clones. there'd be nothing stopping me from just making a clone in civilian clothes to throw you off....'
kakashi and tenzo spend way too much time trying to figure out how sasuke hasnt figured it out yet, considering kakashi&tenzo constantly walk around in full anbu gear without their masks. like, sure, itachi's good about secrecy and rules, but the three spend a decent amount of time together outside of missions, and kakashi isn't exactly, y'know, subtle. and sure, shisui frequently tags along cause where there's one bird boy, there's usually the other. BUT C'MON, KID!! itachi, your little brother is not built for recon missions. (he knows. gods, he knows....)
'your codename is literally just your name.'
itachi, staring into the distance: i know. but apparently, shisui is my best friend and clearly he did it to rub it in sasuke's face that he's closer to me than sasuke.
'you're joking'
'i never joke while on a mission, captain'

I like to think that in an AU where Sasuke stayed in the village, whenever Kakashi had to leave on a solo mission, Sasuke would get up to shit. Like leaving the village and tailing an ANBU team or smth. And Kakashi returning to having to deal with the aftermath of whatever Sasuke did.
I also like to think that he slowly got Taka into the village. Like, I can imagine Kakashi returning to find Sasuke at like a river with Suigetsu and being like, "Sasuke, did you kidnap someone?!?!?!?"
Next time, he returns from a mission, Suigetsu (apparently that was the boy's name and he's from the Mist) complaining and Sasuke braiding a red-haired girl's hair.
The next few times, Sasuke didn't bring anyone new, but the trio got up to so much shit. And then, BAM! Juugo is there, and Sasuke is helping him plant a garden.

I have a new sasusaku au idea.
So say after the third shinobi war, Leaf and Sand made a peace agreement via arranged marriage. The sand would provide a relative of the Kazakage's family to be a bride for one of the head families of Konoha's clans.
The Uchiha clan was chosen to receive the bride. It wasn't decided yet if she would wed Itachi or Sasuke but she would be for one of them.
As for the bride herself, there was a debate to send the Kazakage's daughter Temari, but then Suna's council remembered that Karura had a sister who had a daughter.
Sakura knew her whole life that she would eventually be sent to Konoha as a peace bride. Her childhood was kinda lonely because of it. Suna's council started her ninja training young because they knew the Uchiah's were a ninja clan by trade and that they value strength. They gave her to Lady Chiyo to train. Sakura never really took to puppetry, not like Kankuro, but she did excell under Lady Chiyo's posion teachings and beginner medical training.
When Sakura wasn't with Lady Chiyo, she was with her cousins. She was closest to Gaara since both of them were being raised to be used in service to the village (Gaara as a weapon and Sakura as a peace offering) which left them both pretty isolated as children. This isolation also left Sakura a little oblivious to the village's fear of her favorite cousin. All she knew was that Gaara was a sweet boy who just needed some extra training to control his powers. Yes, she did know that Gaara had Shukaku in him and sometimes he lost control of his powers, but like most kids, she doesn't fully understand what that means.
Sakura and Gaara's relationship took a hit when their uncle, Yashamaru, tried to kill Gaara and then proceeded to blow himself up. Gone was the sweet boy who wanted to love and be loved. Gaara was now colder, and while Sakura still cared greatly for her cousin, it felt like he only tolerated her now. She was still one of his closest relationships, along with his siblings.
When Sakura was twelve, she was given two items. The first was a chain with a ring on it. The ring was silver with a red jewel. Purple chakra swirled in the jewel. The second item was a headband with Konoha's symbol on it.
It was time for her to go to the Leaf Village.
On Konoha's side after the Uchiha massacre the council looked for ways to keep Sasuke in line. They remembered the deal with Suna and made the arrangements to officially betrothed Sasuke and Sakura. Not that they told him.
The deal was that once Sasuke graduated from the Academy, they would bring Sakura to the village and assign her to his genin team. Kakashi about damn near had heart failure when his third student was escorted in with two Sand anbu behind her. Gai had to console him later.
Sakura looked around curiously at everything as she followed Kakashi to meet her other teammates. There was a lot more color in Konoha than Suna, especially the color green. Her teacher was curious, too. He introduced himself as Kakashi Hatake. Hmm, the only Hatake Sakura knew about was the White Fang Sakumo, and Lady Chiyo wanted him dead. She wonders if Kakashi is related.
Sakura is behind Kakashi when he opens the door to a classroom and an erasure falls on his head. A loud laugh was heard from the inside. Was that her betrothed or her other teammate?
"That's what you get for being late!" The voice shouted.
We're they late? Sakura winced. That was probably her fault. Kakashi did have to get her from the Hokage's tower.
Kakashi only humed as he stepped into the room, Sakura following behind. Two boys turned their stares from their sensei to her. She scanned them, one was a blonde with whisker like marks on his face, the other had black hair and eyes. While she couldn't verify via the Uchiah symbol, Sakura had to guess the dark eyed boy was her betrothed Sasuke. She was told the Uchiah's typically had darker features.
Kakashi humed again. "My first impress of you three, I hate all of you."
Well damn, that's not good. Sakura needs allies if she's gonna survive here and make sure to maintain the peace agreement. Having her sensei hate her right off the bat doesn't bode well for her.
They're led up to the roof where Kakashi has them introduce themselves, not that he offered up much info.
The blonde boy started. "My name is Naruto Uzumaki! I like ramen, especially the ramen at Ichiraku! But I hate having to wait the three minutes for it to cook. And my dream is to be the greatest Hokage!"
Well, he was energetic. But this did confirm Sakura's suspicions.
Sasuke spoke next. "My name is Sasuke Uchiah. I dislike a lot of things, and I don't particularly like anyone. I don't have a dream because I will make it a reality. I will restore my clan and kill a certain someone."
Oh, well, there's some familiarity of home with her betrothed. At least she'll have some knowledge on how to approach her betrothed thanks to Gaara.
The boys turned towards her and Kakashi tilted his head. We'll go on.
Sakura blushed. Oh, right. "I'm Sakura Haruno. What I like, I mean, um-" Damn her accent slipped, and after her tutors worked so hard to make sure it was perfect. "I like studying. . ." Can't say posions, won't look good since she's suppsed to be a peace offering. ". . .medical plants and the effect they have on the body. My dislikes are um. . ." What was safe to say? She didn't get a chance to study her teammates before, and there wasn't much info her anbu escorts gave her either.
Kakashi seemed to take pity on her. "And your dream for the future?"
That was easy. "To maintain the peace and alliance between Konoha and Suna."
"How come we've never seen you before?" Naruto asked her.
The boys looked at her confused. Sakura looked at Sasuke confused. Why was he confused? He's the other half to making this peace agreement work.
Kakashi cleared his throat. "Sakura is from another village, but she has been put on this team as part of an alliance agreement. Now for tomorrow we'll have our first mission."
Sakura tensed as Kakashi explained that of the graduates only nine ever make it to genin and the rest are sent back to the academy. What does that mean for her? Would she be sent back to Suna? That can't happen, not if they want to peace agreement to work out, she can't fail this!
Sakura went to speak with Sasuke after they were dismissed. She knows they officially just met but they did need to talk about their engagement. Kakashi pulled them both back.
Kakashi pulled a silver ring on a chain out of his pocket. Sakura knew that ring. It was the matching ring to the one she wore around her neck, except it had her chakra in it instead of Sasuke's. Why would Kakashi have it?
Kakashi handed the chain to Sasuke. "Did your parents ever tell you about your engagement?"
Sasuke's face fell into a scowl. "What?"
Sakura began to grow mortified.
"The alliance agreement between Konoha and Suna was sealed with an arranged marriage between the Uchiha clan and a relative of Suna's leader, the Kazekage," Kakashi explained. "Sakura is the Kazakage's niece, and per the agreement, you two will be living together from this point on."
Sasuke turned his glare on to Sakura. Sakura was thankful she gotten used to Gaara's glares.

Omg thank you for the innsights!!! I also find Naruto hard to write and I personally find him very annoying lmao. Bleak!primadonna au is amazing because it builds on the last big conversation shikako and naruto have before he leaves, in the land of birds, where shikako tells him to find a better solution then years later in a similar situation (avenging a twin!!!) he can’t. We all know that if shikamaru is not okay, shikako is also not okay. And if shikamaru died shikako would burn the world for him. Also this is your ‘verse, but i headcannon that after the war the twins find a bit more balance in their relationship (not amazing but not a cold war either) and without shikamaru, even if she hasnt needed him to orient her in this world for a long time, post canon without him she just loses her need/will the be a ninja. Nothing matter anymore. She has been close to breaking for a long time already in canon and i just think she was closer to breaking as a person than everyone realized. Also i think tsunade would find it naruto is the one who mismanaged his ninja and deprived konoha of it’s seal master and jonin commander in the same move. Like i think she would totally ask him if losing shikako, purely as a resource (sensor, seal mistress, political, reputation, former anbu) is worth the slight to his morals? Like to tsunades reign she was probably one of her most valuable resources and the loss of such a resource is not to be taken lightly. But she 100% thinks shikako was rash and foolish, but thinks naruto should have had the foresight and known shikako better.
Also i headcanon that shikako resigned from anbu under kakashi, so she never swore absolute loyalty to naruto, which i think would be a very interesting dynamic, especially if he tries to use the tattoo function to (like the hyuga main line!!!!!!!!) to remind her of her vows and his orders and will and then she just turns around and reminds him she was never anbu under his command. (Like i don’t know if this is in character for naruto at this stage of his life, but naruto loves to remind people of their responsibilities and doing the right thing so???). Ahhh delicious delicious conflict!! (Hope i didn’t step on your toes or anything, i am like 99.9% sure i will never write anything in any form for this so it’s all up for editing/interpreting/ignoring) i love this verse and your writing thank you so much <3
Hi again, anon! Let's keep this bleak!primadonna AU brain rot party going! :D
Because, oh my god, I agree so much.
Naruto is hard to write! Or, well, he’s hard to write in such a way where his naivety/stubborness is charming/endearing instead of annoying/ridiculous :( I think SQ does thread that needle pretty well in DoS, but I think there’s also a reason why Sasuke has more “screen time” than Naruto even if you take into account the whole “Naruto is traveling with Jiraiya and Sasuke didn’t defect.” Even in the fandom, there’s more fanfic with Sasuke than Naruto because he’s just so difficult to write him well! He is a moral compass in a fandom that loves nuance, RIP.
I also think that the twins find a better balance in their relationship, especially because so much of Shikako’s secret keeping was because she wanted to keep Shikamaru safe from the incoming S-rank threats. Now that the war is over, no more S-rank threats (theoretically) and so significantly less secrets that need to be kept from Shikamaru. (She does still keep secrets, because I think that’s just how she functions, but a lot less than before.) But yes, definitely for her to be so blindsided by his assassination and then being denied her right to avenge him IS so final straw for her that she would just snap. Like I said before, it almost would have been understandable to her if their dad had been the one assassinated or, at least, Shikamaru would have been alive to slow down Shikako’s immediate, brutal revenge, but for her to lose Shikamaru after EVERYTHING they’ve been through? Like if it were the Akatsuki or something, then she’d almost understand it—or, at least, it would be justified for her to take out that level of S-rank threat. But some weird political bullshit trying to get Temari to go back to Sand, and then when Kankurou sends the councilors over as weregild, Naruto DENIES her that justified revenge? WHAT?! HOW DARE HE? It truly would be a betrayal to Shikako that Naruto would hold his own moral opinions above the Nara clan’s political/legal right to mete out whatever punishment they choose for the Sand councilors that killed their heir.
And yeah, Tsuande definitely thinks Naruto made the first mistake. Shikako reacted extremely to it, which was a mistake as well, but the FIRST mistake was definitely on Naruto for that reason.
I love the headcanon that Shikako resigned from ANBU under Kakashi—less because of the “oath to the Hokage” thing, but more because of a matter of timing? Because the reason why she even joined ANBU in the first place is because of her rapid promotions and also the fact that her (and Sasuke’s) reputation(s) were growing much faster than their skill. They needed to be able to gain experience without having a major target on their backs while also leveling up skill-wise enough to match their reputations. So by the time Naruto would have been Hokage, there’s no need for that subterfuge anymore. Shikako’s time better serves Konoha by being open about her movements/missions/abilities. I see it a lot in Kakashi-centric fic, but the idea that after the Uchiha Massacre in particular, they really flaunted Kakashi’s reputation around as a sort of “see we still have a Sharingan and it’s sooooo powerful, woooow” kind of thing to the point that they wouldn’t even let him do ANBU missions anymore because they needed him doing missions under the Sharingan no Kakashi PR as opposed to the (semi-)anonymous ANBU Hound.
Like. If Naruto is to a level of being Hokage, then Shikako (who in all practicality, is the better Hokage candidate) is similarly such an overt S-rank nin that being in ANBU would, if anything, hinder her abilities since she’d have to anonymize her skills.
I also don’t know if Naruto would try to use the tattoo function in that way—although, that would absolutely be such a… hm… not dark arc, per se, but a “you have crossed a line and we can never go back to what we were” sort of thing. Like in a desperation to just get her to listen he tries it and it doesn’t work but that fact that he even tried it. I don’t think it does torture/pain like the Caged Bird Seal, but it probably does a “pay attention to me” type of thing. Like if the Hokage needs to signal their ANBU guards without being too obvious about it kind of thing. So it’s more of a “hey, listen, I’m about to drop a secret mission on you” than a “you must submit to my will or else” but I think it is the chakra equivalent of grabbing someone’s arm when you’re in the middle of an argument which is sort of like escalating from words into potential violence. Especially if the argument started as Shikako to Naruto, former teammates and childhood friends, both feeling betrayed by each other and mourning Shikamaru but then Naruto trying to use the ANBU tattoo to make her listen to his side suddenly brings in his Hokage status and how legally he can do whatever he wants—it is a military dictatorship, after all, “peace” or no—but then it also highlights the whole issue of this bleak!primadonna AU which is that, legal or no, Shikako literally can do whatever she wants due to her power and ingenuity.
Oh, the Hokage says these people are going to jail instead of receiving the capital punishment? What, is he going to protect them personally 24 hours a day for the rest of their lives? And so what if he does? Shikako’s far sneakier than that. What obstacle has Shikako ever been up against that she couldn’t solve eventually? And it’s so easy for her to do harm, she often has to actively curb her more harmful ideas, it’s so much harder for Naruto to enforce his incorrect decision than it is for Shikako to enact hers. Which, again, the whole issue of this AU.
Anyway, anon, I really appreciate your enthusiasm for this weird AU I made. It makes me so happy that other people are thinking about it as often as I do :D

The second one was another Hanahaki disease au but technically separate from the itachi and sasuke thing. I don’t remember what I wrote outside the general plot of it so sry that this is shitty.
Naruto who has nothing and no one, latching onto the idea of a Village that he can love and who will love him in turn.
Naruto who throws himself into loving Konoha and her people before he can even understand what he’s doing.
Naruto who’s love is as persistent as the sea and strong as the forest being met with cold glares, harsh words, and uncaring hands that make him ache.
Naruto who grows up knowing a never ending pain in his chest that only becomes worse.
Naruto who coughs up bloody petals for the first time with the memory of a too big hand hitting his face playing on repeat, not knowing what it means.
Naruto who suffocates on a fully formed flower growing in his lungs at six years old: alone, scared, and unloved as he gasps for air.
Naruto who’s body is found a week later when Hound returns from a mission to check on a little boy he longs to hold in his arms but is forbidden to.
Hound who enters through the apartment window to leave money in gama-Chan, but is instead hit with the scent of rotted flowers, dried blood, and a decomposing body.
Hound who only gets to hold the boy that should have been his little brother when he’s hunched over his corpse more beast than man as sobs come out half whined.
Hound who’s love wasn’t enough to keep naruto alive. Who’s love wasn’t enough to keep anyone alive.
OH.
O H
Bestie ow
Hound who looks down at the too little body (thin. How had he never realized how thin he was in spite of all the money he left between missions) and promises to make the village choke just like they had made his little brother. Who swore to become the demon the thought Naruto was. Who vowed to make them bleed and fear like the too small boy with claw marks on the floor next to his corpse as he fought for his life and lost alone and scared.
Hound who burns that apartment building ti the ground and leaves a shattered ANBU mask in the rubble.
Hound who finds a place by the sea in the wreckage of a different village (failed just like his little brother had been, like all his family had been, like he had been) to bury the last piece of his heart in the old ways, the ways his father had been denied, that Kushina had been denied.
Hound who scratches out the lead symbol on his head band and decides to show the world what a true demon is.

Obito x Kakashi x Rin
Everybody lives, nobody is dead Au :)
1527 words.
Ao3 link [x]
for @obito-week 2023: you're late & family.
Obito should get up and go meet his team, but it is so warm in bed with Kakashi and Rin
With one large swoop Rin pulled the blanket from Obito’s body and threw it over Kakashi instead. “It is time for you to get up, Obito”, she said with the strict voice she only used for her medical students or when Obito hadn’t cleaned up his clothes from the floor. “You are going to be late if you don’t head out now.”
Obito, now freezing with the loss of his blanket, rolled over and buried his head in Rin's chest. “One more minute, please,” he begged and held on to the fabric of her blanket in the vain hope to get a piece of it over his body.
He knew he was already way too late to get up in time for his mission. He knew that his team was going to be waiting for him at the village gates. Naruto making a face, Sakura scolding him and Sasuke would say nothing which would be the worst of all, but Obito couldn’t get himself to leave this bed, which to him seemed like the most comfortable place on earth. Well, until Rin took the blanket from him.
It had been such a long while since the three of them had been able to be together for a night  with two squads to lead and medical ninja to train and Obito had thoroughly enjoyed his moment with both his favourite people together. At night they had a big dinner kudos for Kakashi's amazing cooking skills and then they had Rin tell them a hospital story which always creeped Obito out and made Kakashi excited and then they had gone to bed, without sleeping at first of course.
Obito especially had been against falling asleep. When the clock struck 4 am and both Rin and Kakashi could barely keep their eyes open he would still kiss each of them to keep them awake. “I don’t want tomorrow to come,” he had whined. “I don’t want us to have to part again.” And while the others had affirmed his love for them and said they understood his worries, eventually each of them fell asleep and tomorrow did come.
Now Obito had to live with the fact that he had not only overslept, but also the fact that he found himself completely unable to let go of them. Kakashi had already switched bedsides to Rin’s other side so Obito couldn’t reach for him again. “You shouldn’t let your students wait,” Kakashi had said, “That would be really bad for their teacher.” Kakashi of course was meticulous in his approach to his own ANBU squad. He’d never come too late to meetings.
“Alright, I will go, I swear I will go,”  Obito whined and grabbed the blanket again,”Just one more snuggle, I promise, just one more.”
Rin raised a brow as if she wasn’t believing in his words, but Obito repeated the plea. “I’m so cold so I can’t stay long anyway,” he said, leaving out the part about how a blanket would easily warm him up again.
“Last one, though, Obito, you promised!” Rin lifted her blanket so that Obito could quickly snuggle under it. He let out a deep sigh of relief when he felt the warmth of her body again and could put his head onto her soft and wonderful chest. Behind her he could feel Kakashi moving, his arm still slung around Rin’s hips. They were sandwiching the girl in between them.
Obito felt so good to be back with them, this is how it always had been and how it always should be. The three of them, rocky as their past had been with Obito disappearing and RIn almost dying, had always kind of stuck together. Through fights and anger and love and feelings and more fights they had always come up on the other side as a trio. So while it had been at first only Kakashi and Obito that had made the jump from friends to more than that, adding Rin had felt natural, like that had always would have always been the result of them being teamed up with each other.
“Your little family,” Minato-sensei had once said to Kakashi and Rin when they for the first time complained about working too much, “keeps you busy together, doesn’t it? Reminds me of how I was when Naruto was born.” At that point they didn’t even know that Minato was aware of the three of them dating each other. But, well, he was Hokage, so nothing got past him.
They really did feel like a family, especially when they were all babysitting Naruto as long as he was still small. Nowadays the only person babysitting Naruto was Obtio, who had been blessed or punished, depending on the day, with the boy in his Genin squad. “They fight all the time,” Obito had complained one time about Naruto and his teammate sasuke. “I can’t deal with that bickering all day.” The look Rin exchanged with Kushina did not slip past his notice.
Kakashi and him could also be great at bickering. They did it as a sort of foreplay sometimes. There were times when their arguments got so heated and Rin had to step in, either to shut both of them up or to remind them that deep down they really loved each other. Still, Obito couldn’t help but feel that the comparison between Kakashi and him and Sasuke and Naruto was totally unwarranted, after all the kids were much more of a hassle to deal with now then Obito had ever been when he was young. At least he was convinced of as much.
Rin moved closer to him and wrapped her arms around him tighter so that he could nuzzle his head into her chest even closer. He could barely breathe in this position, but it was worth it for the comfort it gave him. Rin liked being in between both of them like this, letting both their bodies warm her from each side, but since Obito had been so whiny the night before they had made a change and let him sleep in the middle, which he had happily accepted.
“Obito,” Rin whispered in his ear. “You should really get up now.” Obito groaned in response and didn’t move a single centimetre in response.
“The kids can wait,” he murmured into her chest. “They probably have much to catch up on since it’s been some days since we trained together.”
Kakashi let out a huff of air from behind Rin: “Excuses.”
“Hey, who was late last time Minato-sensei had a mission, because he wanted to “Just get a kiss goodbye”, huh?” Obito shot back mercilessly. Of course Kakashi would enjoy teasing Obito about this, as if he wasn’t the same. “Speaking of it, remember, Rin, when you almost missed your surgery appointment because you wanted to stay in bed listening to Kakashi?”
Rin made a face: “T-that was different. He isn’t just reading to us everyday.” One day last summer Kakashi had found a new book that had really excited him. One afternoon the three of them had found themselves in bed together and Kakashi had started reading paragraphs from it, which had drawn them in almost instantly. Kakashi was aware of the effect his voice could have on people and so he had continued reading, loving the captivated audience around him that adored him.
OBito had to remind Rin several times to go to work, but she had always stayed for “One more paragraph” and then almost missed her appointment.
“Really, you are in no position to judge me. At least nobody's life depends on me arriving on time. I’m just teaching a bunch of kids the importance of patience.”
Kakashi laughed, but, magically, said nothing in response. Rin squirmed, probably trying to run over the arguments she could possibly make to still win this discussion, but coming up short.
“Alright,” she said finally. “You can stay, but if you arrive and Sakura-chan rips off all your hair I will not put them back together.”
Suddenly, Obito sat up, his eyes wide: “She would, wouldn’t she?”
Behind Rin Kakashi sat up too: “I don’t think she’d have any mercy for you.”
“I… I better go then.” His eyes showed him the image of his twelve year old student Sakura, ready with a sharp kunai to carve some more scars into his cheek. “Obito sensei” she would say with a strict face. “In the two hours we had to wait here for you we thought of a new fun game to play.” A lopsided grin on her face, her green eyes glistering dangerously. He shivered. “That girl is scary.”
WIth a deep sigh he pushed himself up and dropped the  blanket from his shoulders. With another he watched Rin and Kakashi move even closer together. They would spend another few hours together here in the bedroom in their warmth, while Obito would be outside in the cold trying to keep kids from killing themselves. It was unfair, but better this than to lose all his hair or be a story in tomorrow's newspapers about a group of children that killed their teacher.

I have another chapter here. I'm trying to be better with updates :)
I hope you enjoy it <3
________________________________
Leaving Sakura wrapped up in bedsheets and sleeping soundly, Itachi wandered through her apartment. Out of courtesy, he switched off the lamps in the living room and straightened the cushions on her couch. It was surreal that one day, he would marry this woman. All he knew of her was what his baby brother had told him. But within the last week, he felt that Sakura had become less of an acquaintance and more of… what?
A friend? Not quite. She is something different entirely.
He couldn't place it. His budding relationship with Sakura was unlike his relationships with Shisui or Izumi. It couldn't be put into words because it was ever changing. One minute she was merely an acquaintance, and the next, she had stepped into his memories.
He had never imagined marrying anybody other than Izumi, even though he knew that marriage was expected of him. Although he had initially approached Sakura with business in mind rather than pleasure, standing in her apartment, he found himself wanting to learn more about this woman.
For the most part, her apartment was neglected. Dishes had been left in the sink and the surfaces needed dusting. A lot of dusting. Itachi picked up a framed photograph and wiped away the layer of dust coating the glass. It was a picture of a woman with brown hair twisted into a tight bun. She was cradling a young girl on her knee, and they were both dressed in traditional kimono. Itachi recognised Sakura instantly by her hair and large green eyes. The woman, however, looked very different.
Her mother?
It was unusual that such treasured photographs were covered in dust. But judging by the meticulously placed ornaments and the tidy stack of books on the coffee table, Sakura was not a messy person by nature. The state of her home could be explained by her lack of free time. Sasuke had often complained that Sakura was being worked into the ground.
Itachi understood this well; his own surroundings suffered whenever he was away on missions. It wasn't unusual for him to return home to find a thin coat of dust over his bed. However, it was extremely unlikely that Sakura had been on a mission recently. After her tutelage with Tsunade was discovered, Sakura’s missions were capped. The only missions she received now were usually medical in nature, and should she leave the village, she would be accompanied by a trusted member of Anbu. Even in these cases, Sakura's missions were usually of little import. His father didn't trust her with anything high-ranking.
It's a shame that her abilities have not been put to better use.
As Itachi silently explored her home, he wondered how much it truly bothered her. He had yet to see her complain about being tied to the village, but she probably hid her frustration from her friends. They were already frustrated enough about the situation. In fact, Itachi distinctly remembered one evening in which Sasuke returned home fuming and had refused to eat with their father present. As far as Itachi recalled, Sasuke had not spoken to Fugaku for the two months following, and the tension between the two sparked all sorts of rumours within the Uchiha clan.
Foolish little brother… Father is too far gone to see sense.
Itachi thought he'd seen every room in Sakura’s apartment when he noticed a door in the corner of the living room. It was hidden in the shadows, and at first, he assumed that it was merely a cupboard. The door was no taller than four feet, and both the door and handle was painted white to blend into the wall. It was only when he picked up on the sharp scent of incense that he decided to investigate.
He had an inkling of what was behind the door, and he knew he should walk away out of respect for Sakura's privacy. But some strange part of him felt that she owed him a glimpse into her own past. She had borne witness to some of his most personal memories, and was it so selfish that she should return the favour?
He took the handle and opened it.
His suspicions were correct, and he felt a weight tug at his chest.
The shrine was small but well decorated. Half-melted candles were arranged around two photographs. The resemblance Sakura shared with each was incredible — her mother's eyes and mouth, and her father's nose and cheekbones. The two pictures were copies of the regulatory photographs that all villagers are requested to have taken as part of their official paperwork. Itachi had a distinctly uncomfortable feeling that any other photographs had been destroyed in the coup. That could only mean…
That other woman, she must be an aunt.
In front of the photographs, Sakura had set up an assortment of objects, including a single wedding ring, a piece of a broken teacup, a hairbrush entangled with blonde hair, and a charred notebook.
At this point, Itachi knew that he had overstepped a boundary. He closed the cupboard door, and without a backward glance, left through the open window.
______________________________________
‘What do you mean my shift is covered?’
Sakura was barely lucid, clutching the phone with one hand as she pulled on her vest with the other. After sleeping through her alarm — and waking up with a splitting headache half an hour later than usual — she had called the hospital in a panic to explain that she would be running late. However, it looked as though she needn’t have bothered. There was a rustle on the other line as Tajima Ikue, the hospital receptionist, filtered through sheets of paper.
‘We received a message this morning stating that Haruno-Sensei is to have today off,’ Ikue replied smoothly. ‘I don't know the specifics of who sent the order, but I’m looking at the rota right now and Hiroshi-sensei is covering your shift instead.’
Sakura had an inkling as to who had organised this, and she made a mental note to treat him to some premium dango as a thank you gift.
‘I see. Thanks for letting me know, Ikue-san,’ Sakura said.
‘You're welcome,’ Ikue replied, ‘I'll see you tomorrow, Haruno-sensei.’
Putting the phone down, Sakura crawled back into her bed with relief. She rubbed at her temple, idly sending chakra to soothe her headache. Itachi’s Tsukuyomi had taken its toll on her. If Sakura hadn't been a medic, the after effects would probably have been far worse. And yet, she felt as though she were suspended underwater. The pain above her temple had been reduced to a dull throb, and her joints and muscles were weak and sore.
But this wasn't going to stop her from making the best of her time off. Yes, Itachi had given her this day to rest. However, it was because of her work that she barely had time to spend with her teammates. There was no need to spar or train with them; she was just happy to enjoy their company for a while.
And so, later that morning, Sakura left her apartment and located the familiar warmth of Kakashi's chakra. She found him on the very bridge that had served as their meeting spot as genin. His nose was buried in a copy of Make out Tactics, and he showed no acknowledgement of her presence.
‘Well this is surprising,’ he said at last, glancing her way as she leant against the railings beside him. ‘Aren't you usually at the hospital by now?’
‘Not today,’ she grinned. ‘I've been given a day off.’
His eye crinkled. ‘I'm glad. You're always overworked. A breather will be good for you.’ With one glance at her clothes, he added, ‘I'm guessing you're not here to train.’
‘I'm kind of supposed to be resting today.’
‘Oh? What happened this time?’
She laughed nervously. ‘Just overuse of chakra again,’ she lied. ‘You know me.’
Kakashi hummed in mock disapproval, although Sakura could sense the genuine concern under his facade. ‘What use is a medic who collapses from exhaustion?’
She brushed him off with a gentle smile. ‘You worry about me too much Kakashi-sensei. I can handle myself.’
‘I'm sure you can Sakura, but that doesn't change the fact that—‘ He paused, then sighed. ‘Naruto and Sasuke have sensed your chakra. They'll be here soon.’
Within less than a minute, Naruto and Sasuke appeared in the distance. Sakura almost giggled at the sight of them strolling casually, as though she hadn't sensed their chakra signatures racing through the village only seconds prior.
‘Sakura-chan!’ Naruto waved.
Sasuke followed close behind, smiling faintly in amusement.
‘Shocked to see me?’ she teased.
Naruto sheepishly scratched the back of his head. ‘Sort of. When I saw you with Kakashi-sensei just now, I thought you were a ghost.’
Sakura lightly slapped him across the head, causing Sasuke to smirk. ‘You saw me a couple of days ago. We even ate ramen together. How could you forget?’
‘You know what the idiot's like,’ Sasuke said. ‘He can't even remember what he had for breakfast this morning.’
‘Oi!’ Naruto shook his fist. ‘You bet your ass I can remember. It was cup ramen, curry flavour too!’
Sakura wrinkled her nose. ‘Ramen for breakfast?’
‘Yep, you should try it some time Sakura-chan. It tastes way better in the morning.’
Sasuke shrugged, nonchalant.  ‘I don't know why you're so surprised, Sakura.’
He's not wrong. What else did I expect?
‘I know, I shouldn't be so surprised.’ She turned to Naruto. ‘You realise you're a walking heart-attack waiting to happen, right? You’ll be the first ninja to die from excess sodium.’
Naruto opened his mouth to protest, however the moment was lost as Kakashi tucked his book back into his pouch and clapped his hands.
‘Well then,’ Kakashi said, smiling beneath his mask. ‘It's great to have the entire team here, especially since I know how hard it is for you to get away from the hospital, Sakura. Obviously, since you mentioned that you're supposed to be resting, you won't be training with us today—‘
‘Hold on,’ Naruto cut in. ‘How come Sakura-chan is resting?’
His large blue eyes were fixated on her with worry, whereas Sasuke eyed her knowingly.
‘You've exhausted your chakra again.’
She sighed deeply. Heaven knows she hated lying to her teammates. ‘Kind of. That's why I've been given the day off. I have to rest up before going back to work tomorrow.’
Naruto sulked, pouting like a toddler. ‘It's not fair. What do you even do that takes so much time anyway?’
Sakura wished she was better at lying. A moment’s hesitation could easily give her away. Her work creating antidotes to airborne poisons was confidential, and no matter how much she trusted her team with all her heart, she was under a strict oath not to speak about her current projects. If word escaped that Konoha had developed antidotes to suspected airborne poisons, enemy villages would keep adapting their poisons, rendering Sakura's hard work useless.
And so, unable to speak the truth, Sakura settled for a slightly curved version of it.
‘I heal people,’ she said. ‘You know that already, Naruto. What else do medics do?’
Although Naruto seemed to be placated with her answer, she was painfully aware that Kakashi was eyeing her stonily. Perhaps he knew what her work truly entailed. Even if he did, he would never talk about it. That was just the kind of man Kakashi was.
‘If that's the case,’ Naruto exclaimed, ‘then when I become Hokage, you'll never have to work this hard again Sakura-chan. At least not enough to drain your chakra.’
At this, Sakura's heart sank. Despite her agreement with Itachi, she knew that it would be a long time before Naruto would even be considered a viable candidate for the title. There were just too many hurdles. The biggest being that the political wrongs of the village needed to be set right.
‘Hn. The Hokage title is reserved for the Uchiha, Idiot.’
And just like that, the air seemed thinner.
Sakura bit her tongue to keep from saying anything. Sasuke was surprisingly unlike the rest of his clan; he was unaffected by the Curse of Hatred that was rumoured to run in his family. But there would always be a bridge that Sasuke failed to cross regarding the brutal reality of his clan.
Sakura recalled Itachi's memories vividly. The Uchiha children had taken shelter beneath the Naka Shrine, blind and deaf to the chaos above. It hadn't taken much effort to convince a group of children that their clan was superior to others. Sasuke had never stumbled across the charred remains of bodies. He had never ran barefoot through the streets as buildings burned around him. He had never experienced the horrors that stripped Naruto of his independence, Kakashi of his Sharingan, and Sakura of her parents.
She was grateful when Kakashi swiftly began the morning training. Whilst his expression was concealed behind his mask, Sakura knew that he had also felt the unmistakable tension in the air.
________________________________________
Itachi knocked on the door to his father's office, however it wasn’t truly necessary. Fugaku recognised his son's chakra signature instantly.
‘Come in, Itachi.’
Itachi stepped inside and bowed stiffly. His father did not look up. ’You requested my presence.’
‘I did, yes.’
Fugaku rooted through his desk drawer before pulling out a mission scroll. He pushed it across the desk, where Itachi took it and lazily surveyed its contents.
‘An infiltration mission.’
‘There has been an increase in the number of Kiri nin found along the border,’ Fugaku explained. ‘A team of Anbu ran into a group of them recently. They claimed that they were on a mission escorting a client, but we had a sensory-type amongst our squad, and there was no client seen or sensed in the area. I'm sure you’ve already read the reports.’
Itachi nodded. He had read over the details several times, perplexed by the situation. The Kiri nin had simply stated that they were on an escort mission, refusing to speak further. Any finer details were confidential and Konoha Anbu had no right to demand such information from another hidden village.
‘Normally, I would avoid sending you on a mission like this,’ Fugaku continued, folding his arms. ‘You are one of my strongest shinobi, and you are also my son and heir. If the Mizukage is indeed sending agents to potentially infiltrate Konoha, I would prefer to keep my strongest men here, should worst come to worst.’
It did not escape Itachi's notice that in his father's list of importance, Itachi's strength as a ninja took higher priority than their blood relation. But he said nothing on the matter.
‘There are very few people I trust with this mission,’ Fugaku said. ‘The villagers of Kirigakure have been suspicious of strangers for a long time, especially considering their bloody history. In order to complete this mission successfully, I need two ninja with high stealth and the ability to extract information without drawing attention.’
Itachi raised an eyebrow. ‘Surely there are Anbu operatives more suited to the job?’
‘The Anbu are needed here,’ Fugaku insisted. ‘They are to guard the village walls. I have said this already, Itachi.’ His voice lowered to a murmur, and Itachi could no longer be sure whether Fugaku was talking to his son, or to himself. ‘Naturally, Yamanaka Inoichi would be perfect for something like this. His information gathering abilities are some of the finest I've seen. But I want this mission to be carried out by loyal shinobi I can trust.’
There was an unmistakable venom behind those words. Itachi hadn't forgotten the incident many years ago in which the Yamanaka, Nara and Akimichi clans united to strike a rebellion, the result of which had included several further losses, including Yamanaka Inoichi's arm. From that point on, a curfew and lockdown on all inter-clan mingling was ensued as a means of preventing further conspiracy. The trio of clans had made a formidable enemy, and had it not been for an agent collecting information from the inside, the Uchiha clan would have fallen easily.
Information is the most valuable weapon of all.
‘There’s another matter to consider,’ Fugaku said, snapping Itachi out of his thoughts. ‘I would also like your recommendation for a suitable partner on this mission.’
Whilst the mission could technically be achieved by one ninja working solo, two nin working together maximised the volume of information gathered, while still being inconspicuous enough not to rouse attention. From the moment Itachi laid eyes on the mission slip, he knew that this was an opportunity he couldn’t let slide.
‘I have someone in mind,’ he replied. ‘I have reason to believe that Haruno Sakura would be an asset on this mission.’
Fugaku's expression instantly darkened.
‘As you know,’ Itachi said, ‘her chakra control is flawless. She would be able to conceal her kunoichi background without error. And should the mission fail, the combination of her medical skills and field strength would boost our chances of us both returning in one piece.’
Fugaku looked far from impressed. If anything, his lip curled in disgust. ‘As I said, I want somebody I can trust.’
‘You trust me,’ Itachi interjected. ‘And I can assure you that I’d keep watch over her at all times.’
His father was practically seething at the suggestion of Sakura on such an important mission. But after a moment's thought, Fugaku gave Itachi a reluctant nod.
‘I don't like this, but I trust your judgement, Itachi. Do not let me down.’
With that, Itachi bowed and left the office. As far as he knew, Sakura's last mission had involved gathering medicinal herbs from a rural village at the border between Fire and Wind country. Whilst it would have been a peaceful mission, he suspected that deep down Sakura missed taking on something high-ranked. She was sure to be thrilled about their mission together, and the simple thought of Sakura's excitement left Itachi smiling.
__________________________________________
It hadn’t taken long for a Team Seven training session to turn into an all-out brawl between Sasuke and Naruto over who could punch holes in the most trees. Sakura would have happily put them both in their place, if not for her “chakra exhaustion”, and wisely chose to stay well away from the destruction.
She had left them bickering over their scores, slipping away from the training grounds without either of them noticing. As much as she wished to stay and kick some sense into her idiotic teammates, Sakura had something else in mind. She wanted to pay Ino a visit. A proper visit this time. She had several hours before curfew, and she knew that the pig would be dying to gossip and chat freely without the clock ticking over their heads.
The two shinobi guarding the gates of the Yamanaka compound were different than last time. In fact, Sakura recognised one of them as Uchiha Tomoharu – a chunin only a couple of years younger than her and innocently swept up in his clan’s powerful grip. She had once saved after a botched mission. His team had carried him into the hospital, his leg slashed in several places and clearly septic. If not for Sakura’s team working on him all through the night, Tomoharu wouldn't have made it. Although Sakura had always made it clear that his teammates were the real heroes, Tomoharu never failed to show his gratitude towards her.
As she approached the gates, Tomoharu flashed her a boyish grin.
‘The gods must be rewarding me,’ he said. ‘It's been a long day and I didn't think I would be lucky enough to run into you, Sakura-sensei.’
She smiled automatically. Tomoharu was just like that; the warmth he radiated as a person made it impossible to place him alongside his relatives. In fact, now that Sakura thought about it, there was something about Tomoharu’s sunny nature that struck her as familiar.
He’s so much like Shisui…
Her heart ached at the memory of Shisui’s fate.
‘Believe me,’ she said, ‘if anyone’s lucky here, it’s me. How have you been Tomoharu-kun?’
‘Sama.’ The other guard's steely voice cut through. He was glaring at Sakura. ‘You may refer to him as “Uchiha-sama” and nothing less.’
Tomoharu shifted uncomfortably, looking at his prickly partner with uncertainty. It was clear that he wanted to stand up for her, but didn’t want to make things worse. Sakura, however, was used to the Uchiha ruining her day. It felt so backwards, being forced to call Tomoharu by a name that he didn’t like. But it was the world they lived in.
‘I guess we'll have to catch up some other day,’ Tomoharu muttered. This time, his smile was forced.
‘I suppose so,’ she said. ‘Perhaps when you’re not on duty.’
He nodded, and his mannerisms shifted, taking on an air of formality. ‘In that case, you may proceed, Sakura-sensei.’
Sakura bowed and walked through the web of chakra. It was strange watching Tomoharu's personality warp as he embraced his role as a guard. It was also so, so wrong. He was twenty. A chunin. He should have been out, having the time of his life on missions, not stuck on guard duty.
At least he actually reached his twentieth birthday. Shisui and Izumi weren't so lucky.
The thought weighed heavily on her mind as she strolled past rows of houses. Things hadn't changed at all. Whether it was Shisui, Itachi, Izumi, Tomoharu or even herself, children had always been forced to grow up a little too fast.
Don't think about it. It's your day off.
The voice in the back of her mind was right. This day was a gift. Dwelling on the cruel realities of life would only bring her sadness.
She ploughed on through the Yamanaka district until she came to Ino's door. Unfortunately, it was Ino's mother who answered, inspecting Sakura shrewdly before explaining that Ino was out training. Sakura thanked her, and hoping not to drag out the tension any further, headed in the direction of the Yamanaka training fields.
There was something about the training fields that soothed Sakura. While the main area had been cleared of any wilderness for ease, the grounds themselves were situated in a large meadow. Around the perimeter, the grass was sweet with wildflowers — flowers that many years ago, Sakura and Ino had strung together to make necklaces and fairy crowns.
‘Pig!’ Sakura called. Shin-deep in wavy grass and buttercups, she peered through the foliage. ‘It's me! I heard you were out here!’
Somewhere in the trees there was a snap of twigs, and Seconds later, a purple blur hopped down from a branch. Ino looked exhausted, her hair sticking to her face and her clothes brushed with soil.
‘Hey Forehead.’ Ino predictably cornered her in a tight hug. ‘It’s funny, I was just thinking of taking a breather.’
The two sat down against the trunk of a large oak. Ino sipped at a water bottle and with one wrist, wiped the sweat from her forehead. Sakura closed her eyes and leant her head back against the bark. The afternoon sun warmed the exposed skin of her arms and legs, and Sakura could have easily fallen asleep right then and there.
‘So Itachi, huh?’
Oh no…
Sakura tensed, cracking her eyes open just enough to see Ino's sneaky smile.
‘What about him?’ She asked, trying to brush off her nerves. ‘You know you can’t just go around calling him by his first name, what if somebody heard you? Plus, it’s rude.’
Ino hissed, and flicked Sakura’s upper arm. ’Don't play dumb with me, Forehead. I saw you together.’
’You saw us?’
‘Of course I did. You were out eating dango with that fine hunk of man meat.’
Sakura's stomach churned. The last time they spoke, she hadn’t mentioned anything about Itachi that could give his identity away. Likewise, Ino wasn’t as stupid as she sometimes acted. She could put two and two together. But more importantly, had she overheard their conversation at the dango shop? How much did she know?
There’s no way I can get Ino involved in this, Sakura thought, trying not to grimace.
‘So Forehead,’ Ino said. ‘Care to explain what you were doing dining out with the Hokage's right-hand man?’
Sakura could only hope that Ino would drop the subject. Who was she kidding? Of course Ino wouldn’t drop it.
‘It was nothing. He was asking about a project I'm working on at the moment, you know, at the hospital.’
‘Yeah, sure he was,’ Ino snorted. ‘Don't lie to me, Sakura. I know you. Other people probably can't tell, but whenever you're talking about work you go all rigid and professional… kind of like a cardboard cut-out. Anyway, I know you weren't talking about work. You were way too relaxed for that.’
‘It really was nothing, Ino.’
‘Sakura I told you not to lie to me.’ Ino sat up on her knees, facing Sakura fully until it became impossible to ignore her. Her voice was barely above a whisper. ‘Last time, you said someone was asking you to choose between yourself and the greater good or whatever it was.’
Sakura opened her mouth to tell her that back then she had been speaking hypothetically, but Ino raised a finger to cut her off.
‘Sakura, tell me straight. Is Uchiha Itachi blackmailing you or something?’
‘What? No!’
‘Then why the hell is he asking you such weird stuff about the greater good? Be honest with me. I don’t trust him, he’s one of them.’
Sakura's heart fluttered nervously. She was aching to confide in somebody; all of these secrets about Konoha’s past left her feeling like an unexploded mine. But she couldn't drag Ino into this. It was far too political. The fewer people knew about Itachi's plan to usurp his father right from under his feet, the better.
‘I… I can’t, Ino-pig,’ she answered. ‘I just can't risk it.’
I can’t risk anything happening to you.
Sakura thought Ino would be mad, irritated that Sakura could harbour so many unshed secrets. But much to Sakura's relief, her best friend just gave her a weary smile.
‘Sure, Forehead. I understand. But whatever you've gotten yourself into, if it becomes too much to deal with, you can always let me in.’
Ino… Thank you.
At times like these, Ino was the sister Sakura never had. It wasn't that she didn't trust Ino. But rather, she felt that if she spoke about it out loud – without Itachi's reassuring presence – the information would somehow be leaked and he would lose his advantage against his father. If word got out that Itachi was working against his clan, he would be stripped of all power, no longer in line for the position of Hokage.
The butterflies in Sakura's chest had begun to ebb away, and with a tired smile, she slid down the tree trunk and rested her head against her best friend’s shoulder.
‘What would I do without you, Ino?’
‘Oh, you’d be hopeless without me, obviously,’ Ino scoffed. ‘But if that damn Uchiha causes any problems, just let me know and I'll pulverise him. It doesn’t matter how attractive he is.’
Sakura laughed dryly. ’That’s Sasuke-kun’s brother, you know. Stop making things weird.’
‘You can’t deny it. Even if he’s the enemy, he’s got the face of Adonis.’ Ino paused, humming pleasantly. ‘Not to mention that beautiful body.’
Sakura elbowed her in the ribs. ‘Stop! I don’t want to think about him that way.’
‘Too late, you’re already thinking about him.’
‘Shut up, Pig!’
There was still time before curfew, so for now, she could enjoy the quiet of the meadow. The sweetness of flowers lingered in the air, and above the canopy, swallows flocked in lines. With her head resting against Ino’s shoulder, the two simply enjoying the silence of the other’s company, Sakura realised that her headache had finally subsided. But more than that, she finally understood why she wished to stand by Itachi’s side.
I want to fight for this moment right here. I want to fight for my family.

BEING promoted to the jonin rank was a huge accomplishment for you, someone who has been working long and hard towards becoming a respected and caring ninja for the village. You had spent most of your teenage years with the ANBU alongside a well respected leader himself, Hatake Kakashi, and the youngest ninja to ever be captain of a squad, Uchiha Itachi. Soon, the interest in being with the ANBU was lessening with you, and you decided you would be better off becoming a jonin and possibly teaching freshly graduated kids in the arts of being an amazing ninja. Besides, you always had a soft spot for children back when you were in the ANBU, so you thought it would be an amazing idea on your part.
So here you were in your lonesome apartment sliding your clothed sleeves through the dark green flak jacket that had a red spiral embedded in the back of it, representing the commitment you took in protecting the Hidden Leaf Village. Fixing your hair in a style that suited you, your reflection in the mirror presented itself wonderfully, and you were prepared for what the day ahead of you holds. Walking out of your bedroom, you headed straight for the front door, sliding your feet into your dark colored sandals and strapping them securely. Once everything seemed right for you, your feet began to lead you out of the apartment, and you locked the door behind you before pursuing the plan you had for the day.
Starting out, you walked all over the Hidden Leaf Village searching for the one you named your best friend. His pushed back raven hair stuck out within the crowd of people around you, especially with the proud display of his Hidden Leaf ninja headband tied around his forehead. Your eyes widened with a sudden excitement rushing through your bloodstream, and your feet began to act on their own accord as they helped push you through the crowd of people whilst muttering small apologies here and there. You hadn’t seen your best friend in a while since he was on a hectic mission for a couple of days, so you were anxiously readying yourself to see him again.
“Y/N? You good there?” he said as your panting figure reached him. You were bent over with your hands pressed into your thighs whilst heavily breathing as if you ran a whole mile, nonstop, just to see him again. Looking up, you found yourself staring directly at the light smirk that was planted on his lips, and a small chuckle left your lips as you straightened your back and relieved a sigh. Uchiha Sasuke stood before you with his hands in his sweats pockets, adorned in a similar attire to yours since he was on duty. His charcoal eyes gazed over at you, and his head tilted a little as he took in your appearance. “Yeah, no, I’m fine. How was your mission, Uchiha?” you asked, walking closer to your best friend.
Sasuke brought a single arm around you, grasping you in his warmth as you reciprocated the hug with both of your arms. Inhaling his significant scent made you remember all the times you two had spent together, the bad and the good, throughout your journey into becoming a distinguished jonin. Having him in your life was the best feeling in the world, and you couldn’t be more thankful for the special bond the two of you shared.
Before Sasuke could respond to your question concerning his mission, a couple of footsteps caught up beside Sasuke, prompting the two of you to pull away from each other. Your curious eyes glanced over at the man who stood a couple of inches short from Sasuke’s tremendous height of six feet. The stress lines were easy enough for you to comprehend his presence, but what stood out the most in his face was the small, rare smile that took over his lips. It was like you hadn’t seen him for ages as the light in your eyes shined brighter than ever, causing you to practically leap into his arms.
Uchiha Itachi, older brother of Sasuke and a close mentor of yours from your time in the ANBU, hugged you back with a light pit of laughter escaping from his mouth. “And suddenly, I have become a third wheel,” Sasuke scoffed under his breath, turning his head to the side dramatically. You giggled and pulled away from Itachi, aiming a soft punch to Sasuke’s arm. “It’s good to see you both again,” you said, tucking your hands into your flak jacket, “Why don’t we all have lunch at Ichiraku’s today? It’ll be my treat considering you both just got back from your mission.”
Sasuke simply shrugged his shoulders with a light nod seeing as you were offering to pay, for once in your friendship with him. The two of you looked over at Itachi for a response, and the man mimicked Sasuke’s actions, “However, you don’t need to pay for anyone. I’ll pay for us.”
You were going to fight back, but a simple pat of your shoulder from the older Uchiha made you silence yourself quickly. And with that, Itachi disappeared into thin air, leaving you with Sasuke once more.
“So, how was your mission, duckbutt?”
— — —
Lunchtime was nearing, and Itachi had decided to take a light walk beforehand to help clear the rushing thoughts that roamed his mind. Ever since he saw you this morning, he couldn’t think clearly for the entire morning afterwards, and many times, he was caught off guard during meetings and mission debriefings by his fellow jonins. The feelings Itachi had for you were too strongly filling his heart that he couldn’t process encountering the same emotion with anyone else. He was so undoubtedly in love with you that he never saw another person in the same way his tired eyes see you.
Itachi stopped at a bridge within the village and leaned his arms over the railings. Pondering the thought, his eyes stuck to the crystal clear water that waved underneath the bridge he was standing upon. Seeing you with Sasuke was enough for him to grow a little bit irritated, specifically because of how open he always saw you be with his little brother. Itachi wished you would talk to him the same way you would talk to Sasuke, but showcasing this desire to you was a tough thing for him to accomplish considering how closed off he is with his emotions. It wasn’t easy for anyone to read Itachi like a book, especially you, and it bothered him that he was incapable of coming clean to you about the feelings he has been holding onto for such a long time.
Popping into his line of sight, Itachi’s eyes went from watching the water move lightly below him to focusing intensely at the dango that was put in front of his face. Itachi turned his head slowly whilst activating his Sharingan, furrowing his brows when he saw his former ANBU captain standing there with his arm outstretched. “You look like you need it. Care to share your deepest thoughts with me?” Kakashi spoke underneath his mask with a closed eye smile evident on his face.
Itachi let his Sharingan disappear, and he hesitantly took the dango in his hands, simply staring at it as he twisted it around in his fingers. He sighed and took the smallest bite out of it, looking back out at the water. “It’s Y/N… isn’t it?” Kakashi questioned, copying Itachi’s stance next to him. Itachi didn’t have to say another word because out of all of the people he knew and held close to him, Kakashi knew the most about his inner struggles with his emotions. The silver haired jonin was always around for Itachi to confide in, and his ears were always open to listen in on whatever may be conflicting the Uchiha.
“Y/N means a lot to me, Kakashi. Deep down, I’m terrified of losing the chance to be with them. I mean… Y/N’s already a jonin, and soon, they’ll be happily married and living her best life. I don’t know how to tell them how I truly feel about them, and everytime I see Y/N, I get that nervous feeling in my chest. Even if I did tell them about what I’m feeling, there’s a big possibility they don’t feel the same about me,” Itachi responded, delicately biting off the dango in his hand. Kakashi repositioned himself so he was standing with a straight posture and a hand on his hip, turning to face Itachi. “The best way of telling Y/N about your feelings is to do it bluntly and be completely straightforward. If you try to beat around the bush, then you’ll either not confess to it properly or make a complete fool of yourself in front of Y/N. As for the reciprocation, well… I can tell Y/N cares about you as much as they care about Sasuke, but there is a clear tell that they only see Sasuke as their best friend. Do what you want with that information, but from all the books I have read about this stuff, it’s clear that Y/N likes you, too,” Kakashi spoke adamantly to Itachi.
“Ah yes, let me trust those quite interesting books you read twenty-four seven,” Itachi commented jokingly with the hint of a smile poking at his lips. Kakashi was quick to defend himself by pointing a finger at the Uchiha, “My books can be very educational… at times, and in this situation, that knowledge applies!”
“Whatever, Kakashi. Thank you for talking to me about it. I just hope Y/N does feel the same about me as you think they do,” Itachi mumbled, finishing the last of his dango in a couple of bites. “I don’t think so… I know so,” Kakashi reiterated firmly.
Itachi tossed the empty stick into a nearby trashcan and chuckled a little at Kakashi. He said his goodbyes to his former captain and walked off of the bridge, heading in the direction to Ichiraku Ramen.
— — —
Walking past the curtains that covered the entryway to the small ramen shop, Itachi furrowed his brows when he spotted just one occupied seat at the counter, but he quickly noticed the figure sitting there was you. “Y/N, where’s Sasuke?” Itachi asked. Startled by the sudden sound of his deep voice, you pressed a hand to your chest and took a deep breath to calm the fast beating of your heart. You looked up to meet his face, and immediately, you spoke up, “Don’t scare me like that! Gosh, Itachi. Sasuke got pulled into an emergency mission with Naruto and Sakura.”
Itachi hesitated in taking the vacant seat next to you and simply just stared at it which made you begin to sweat profusely, growing anxious about being alone together. You began to get up from your seat which caught Itachi’s attention, and as you were coming up with an excuse as to why you were suddenly leaving, a hand grasped your wrist gently pulling you back to the counter. “Stay… we’ll eat lunch together. I don’t see a problem with that,” Itachi said, letting go of your wrist after apologizing quickly for the sudden act. Shrugging your shoulders, you sat back down in your seat and watched as the chef walked up to the counter, ready to take your orders.
After placing the orders, the two of you sat in complete silence not knowing what to mention or bring up to start a decent conversation. This quiet time allowed you to discreetly glance over at Itachi’s side profile which was on full display as he leaned over the counter to pick at his fingernails whilst he waited for the food to come. His long, raven bangs framed his well structured face perfectly, pointing out how sharp his jawline was which could possibly pierce one’s skin. The long eyelashes that sat on his eyelids shielded his charcoal stained eyes and fluttered nicely whenever he blinked, giving off a calming sensation from his character. Following his frame, your eyes landed on his arm where through the lining of his shirt, you could see a hint of muscle clinging to the fabric from within the enclosed space, a sure fire sign that he was as much brawn as he was brains.
Soon, two steaming bowls of ramen were placed on the counter in front of the both of you, forcing you to tear your gaze away from the Uchiha. Drool was quite literally forming from your mouth at the sight of the delicious noodles that sat in the well made broth. Itachi got a quick glimpse of your fascinated and hungry face which made him chuckle lightly. The two of you proceeded with breaking open your chopsticks and dug right in as if the two of you had been starved for far too long.
“Y/N.”
“Hm?” you glanced over at Itachi with some noodles hanging from your lips. The Uchiha gulped down the sudden lump that formed in his throat at the adorable sight of you, and he had to take a sip of his ice cold water to truly keep the rising blush in his cheeks at bay.
“What do you say to taking a little walk after lunch? Unless of course you happen to be busy—”
“Say no more, Itachi! A walk sounds lovely, but it might have to wait because I want another bowl!” you exclaimed, cutting him off before turning faceforward and holding your empty bowl in the air, “More ramen, please!”
Itachi couldn’t handle the utter cuteness that you were exploding out from your minor gestures and attitude towards eating. He is so smitten with you that it was forcing him to get all flustered whenever you acted in a simple way like you were doing right now. Any twist in your facial expression or change in the way you were eating set off a whole load of fireworks in his brain, truly proving just how intoxicated he was with the love he had for you.
Eventually, the two of you finished eating your lunches, and just as you were reaching for money to pay for the meals, Itachi was thanking the chef for the meals and getting up from his chair to head over to the curtained entrance and exit of the small shop. He held it up for you as you simply stared at him confusingly, wondering when he had paid the kind chef for his service. After thanking the chef for your food, you got up and walked out of the shop, waiting for Itachi to catch up to you.
“I said I would pay for us, don’t you remember?” you mumbled with a small pout of your lips. Itachi chuckled and shook his head as he stuffed his hands in his pockets, “Don’t you remember when I said that I would?”
You looked straight ahead and tilted your head, a process you go through to remember relevant information from the past. Itachi, simply, continued walking whilst taking glances at you in case you were to suddenly trip because of how focused you were in trying to remember. After a while, you sighed and let your shoulders fall, “Oh well. Thank you for paying, Itachi.”
Silence was all that was heard throughout your walk through the village. However, Itachi suddenly stopped walking, prompting you to stop and turn to face him. His head was slightly down and his facial expression was one that held quite some seriousness to it. Before you could approach Itachi, the Uchiha beat you to it by closing in on you, leaving just a mere couple of inches between your bodies. Your breath hitched upon spotting Itachi’s face so intimately close to yours, close enough that you can see the small twinkles in his eyes as he wandered them over your facial features, scanning everything intently.
“Thank you for having lunch with me… I’ll see you later, Y/N,” Itachi whispered. You didn’t react, not one bit after watching him walk away so suddenly. It was like you were completely frozen where your limbs refused to move, and your mind refused to comprehend the interaction the two of you just had. Once it settled into your mind that you were standing in the middle of a walkway with no sign of Itachi anymore, you turned on your heels and continued going along with your day, checking this down as a strange interaction.
— — —
Night fell over the Hidden Leaf Village, and the navy blue sky was dotted with small, shining stars alongside the crescent moon hovering with the light dust of clouds. Most of the village was empty with people now in their homes to get some rest for the night, apart from some ninjas who were busy with filing their mission reports or readying themselves for missions up ahead. You had nothing in particular that was keeping you away from home. You simply didn’t feel the need to because of your little interaction with Itachi earlier in the day. It was trapped in your mind, and even when you completely disregarded it when it happened, it came back to haunt you as if it were an incomplete thought wanting some shed of light once again.
Instead of finding your way home, you stumbled onto Sasuke’s doorstep, lightly knocking against the wooden door. It took a couple of seconds, but soon, the door opened, allowing some light to peek through the crack it made and shine onto your face. Sasuke stood in the doorway with furrowed brows and a light frown on his face.
“You do know it’s nearly midnight, right?” Sasuke asked, clueless as to why you were here at this hour. Regardless, he opened the door wider and stepped aside to let you inside. You took off your shoes and watched your best friend head into the kitchen, disappearing around a corner. “My feet practically brought me here. My mind’s a little distracted, and I didn’t feel like going home. You don’t mind if I crash here tonight, do you?” you questioned, growing irritated with yourself for sounding like a burden to your best friend.
“Sure, you can crash here. I believe some of your clothes are still here from the endless amount of sleepovers we had during our time with the ANBU, and you can take my bed,” Sasuke replied, grabbing a pot from underneath the sink. “Oh no, I can sleep on the couch, Uchiha. You can have your bed all to yourself,” you responded, walking through a hallway to arrive at Sasuke’s bedroom.
Because of the amount of time you spent together, especially after vigorous and strenuous missions that left you in a weakened state, you would occasionally sleep over at Sasuke’s place since it was closer to the gates than yours was. Additionally, you left clothes here in the event that you would have to stay, uninvited. You practically had the key to his front door stashed in your apartment somewhere, but that was for emergencies only. However, there were times when you’d use the key to scare Sasuke to bits or just to come over and annoy him. That’s just how close the two of you were. You practically grew up with one another, and you always relied on Sasuke in the same way he would rely on you, whenever it was needed.
After changing into a pair of pajama pants and a t-shirt, you walked out of Sasuke’s bedroom and entered the kitchen. You took a seat at the island and sighed dramatically, causing Sasuke to raise a brow in response. Your eyes watched him pour two cups of piping hot tea he had just made on the stove, keeping one black and adding cream and sugar into the other. You followed his figure as it approached the other side of the island, and soon, the cup of tea with cream and sugar was pushed across the counter, stopping directly in front of your elbows which rested on the counter. Sasuke walked around the counter and took a seat next to you which was a sign that you could rest your head on his shoulder. The two of you sat in this position for a good minute or so with nothing but silence airing in the room. Occasionally, you’d pick your head up to take a sip of the sweet tea that Sasuke made for you, but otherwise, you’d leave your head on his comfortable shoulder.
As soon as you finished your cup of tea, Sasuke pushed the two empty cups out of arm's reach and crossed his arms, staring down at the countertop he had them resting on. “Sasuke, I think Itachi has feelings for me,” you whispered, picking at your fingers. Sasuke glanced down at your head, only getting a glimpse of your hair. “Really? What makes you say that?” Sasuke questioned.
You sighed and picked up your head from his shoulder, smiling a little. “He’s a little awkward around me, and… it looked like he wanted to confess earlier after we had lunch together,” you replied, shrugging your shoulders. “Looked? Meaning… he didn’t confess to you?” Sasuke asked, mumbling the last part.
Confused, you glanced over at Sasuke and furrowed your brows. Tilting your head, you stared deeply at the younger Uchiha in an attempt to get him to crack, but knowing your best friend, he wouldn’t even shiver under this kind of minimal pressure. Sasuke could feel you staring at him as if you had figured out that he was hiding something from you.
“Sasuke… what aren’t you telling me?” Sasuke sighed and sat up straight in his chair before beginning to let you in on what he had running on his mind.
Heading for Ichiraku Ramen a little earlier than planned, Sasuke had his hands stuffed in his pockets with his usual stoic expression on his face. He happened to take the path that went over a bridge within the village to get to Ichiraku Ramen, however before he had the chance to step foot on the wooden planks of the bridge, Sasuke stopped in his steps at the sight of his older brother and former teacher from when he was a genin. Furrowing his brows, Sasuke kept quiet and leaned against one of the wooden beams holding up a light that hung over the bridge. From this distance, he had a clear path of hearing and was able to catch onto what the conversation between the silver haired jonin and one of the village prodigies were talking about.
“I don’t know how to tell them how I truly feel about them, and everytime I see Y/N, I get that nervous feeling in my chest. Even if I did tell them about what I’m feeling, there’s a big possibility they don’t feel the same about me,” Sasuke heard coming from the deep voice that belonged to his dear brother.
It surprised him that his older brother would fall for someone like you considering how different the two of you were, especially in the age difference of six years. The entire time he has known you, Sasuke assumed that Itachi would see you in the same way he did… an annoying yet dependable little sibling. But boy was he wrong. Sasuke always saw Itachi as a straightforward and blunt guy, but finding out he was struggling with telling you his feelings was something new to him, for sure.
Sasuke glanced back at the pair, noticing the conversation had ended. He turned on his heels and weaved some hand signs, bringing out a little crow that was perched on his shoulder. Sasuke tied a message to its foot and let the crow fly into the atmosphere where it will reach you, eventually, with an excuse for lunch.
“I ended up going to eat barbeque with the others from the old Team Seven, so I hope you’re not upset about that. After hearing the struggle that Itachi was going through, I thought that the lunch would give him a chance to tell you how he truly feels, but… guess his emotions are too locked up from all the training he did during his childhood,” Sasuke added, finishing the story he had told you.
Sasuke looked over at you, but he was shocked to see you weren’t sitting there. He hopped out of his seat in an instant and calmed down when he found you putting on your shoes, regardless of the sleeping outfit you were still adorned in. “Where are you going?” Sasuke asked, walking over to you to also put his shoes on. “Where do you think? I’m going to find Itachi,” you responded, opening the door and stepping outside.
The nightly breeze cooled across your bare arms, and your hair lightly danced with the wind as you looked right and left to find out where you should head to first. Sasuke followed you out of the house and locked the door behind him, standing directly next to you. You were fazed by the grasp of your wrist that he collected in an instant as you were beginning to be pulled in a certain direction.
“If Itachi is awake at this hour, which I know he is, I know the one place where he would be,” Sasuke said, looking back at you quickly before looking forward once more. You nodded and allowed for the Uchiha to drag you in the same direction in which you started.
— — —
Climbing to the tallest point in the Hidden Leaf Village in your pajamas whilst it was freezing outside thanks to the wind was a harsh task to accomplish. Nonetheless, you followed Sasuke as the two of you headed to the tops of the rock where each of the Hokage’s faces were carved into. As expected of the younger Uchiha, Itachi was seated on the ground right at the edge of the cliff which overlooked the entire village. He was dressed in a simple, black jacket that had the Uchiha crest on the back with dark gray sweatpants and a light gray t-shirt. His hair was messily tied in a red elastic which was lower than usual, allowing many of his raven locks to flow with the wind in front of his face.
Looking over at Sasuke, you nodded, which was a signal to the Uchiha to let you handle this. Hugging yourself for warmth, you walked slowly up to the honorable Uchiha so as to not startle him, but in fact, he was the first to startle you. “You’re not asleep?” his voice came out in a low whisper. A light chuckle escaped your mouth as you sat down next to him, looking out at the beautiful village below your feet. “I could ask you the same question,” you responded, looking over at him.
“Insomnia is hitting real good right about now, so… what better way to spend the night than sitting up here and enjoying the view,” Itachi said, sighing heavily, “Do you want my jacket?”
Itachi hasn’t even looked at you, yet he knew you were suffering sitting there beside him with the cold breeze running across your skin. Before you could answer, the older Uchiha was unzipping the lower half of his jacket and tore it off from his upper body, turning to face you entirely. He scooted a little closer to you and gently placed the oversized article of clothing over your shoulders, fixing it over the front of your body. You couldn’t tell if the blush you were feeling rising in your cheeks was from the cold air in the atmosphere or if it was an effect of the close proximity of Itachi’s face with your own, but either way, you were enjoying the comfy warmth that the jacket brought.
Once the jacket was securely enclosed around your body, Itachi went back to his original position, looking back out at the village. Unconsciously, you let gravity take control of the heaviness of your head and rested it against the sturdiness of Itachi’s shoulder. Now, it was time for Itachi to blush profusely at the close contact that the two of you were engaged in.
“A little birdie told me that you like me… a lot, but I want to hear it coming from you, Itachi,” you whispered, repositioning your head to look up at the Uchiha. Itachi hummed enthusiastically and instinctively rested the side of his face against your head.
“I’m not very good with emotions, Y/N, but it doesn’t stop me from realizing that you are the one for me. I have never looked at anyone like I look at you. You make me smile and laugh more than anyone else, and I cherish that part of your personality. I tried to make myself not like you as much as I do now, but it is virtually impossible to do so because now… I am simply too head over heels for you, Y/N, and just you being here has made me a happier guy than I was when I woke up this morning. I guess now that I am here with you in my presence, it isn’t too hard to say that I’m in love with you, Y/N,” Itachi said, eyes full of love with every word he spoke of you.
You tore your head off of his shoulder and smiled over at him, watching his face turn to catch your response in your facial expression. Upon seeing the smile on your face, Itachi also let a smile form on his lips which matched yours perfectly. Leaning over, you pressed a gentle kiss to his cheek and rested the crown of your head against the spot, letting Itachi carefully wrap an arm around your waist to bring you in closer.
“I guess I didn’t realize my own feelings for you, Itachi. I’m sorry for being so oblivious to you this entire time. I should have been more aware of what’s going on,” you apologized, looking down at his empty hand. Reaching out you took his hand in your own and lightly applied pressure before looking up at his face once more. “No worries, Y/N. As long as it's out that I love you, then that’s all that matters to me,” Itachi responded.
Anticipating a soft kiss to your lips, you were wrongfully interrupted when a tiny pebble was chucked at the back of your head, resorting to rubbing the spot on your head and turning around with Itachi doing the same. The both of you locked eyes on Sasuke who was standing there with a frown on his face.
“If you two are done being all lovey-dovey in front of me, can we all go home? For once, I actually want to sleep a full night in my bed,” Sasuke complained, turning on his heels to walk away from you two.
Sighing, you got up from your spot and held tightly onto the jacket around your upper body, peering down at Itachi. Holding out a hand for him, Itachi stared at it for a second before taking it with his own, allowing you to hoist him up. Itachi had an arm wrap around your waist which was enough to keep you close to his chest for the necessary warmth you were in dire need of.

I got a couple of questions for the reborn AU
1.  Are they Team 4 because it's the other unlucky number?
2. Are that generations team 7 more lucky than team 4? If yes, by how much?
3. If team 4 is made up of the worst team-up, how are others viewing them? I mean especially Tori, cause in comparison to the Jinchuriki Sensei and 2 prodigy teammates (one being able to essentialy causing mass hallucinations and the other causing mass destruction via bomb). Like do others look at that team and think "poor girl. The only normal one" just to get hit with the fact that Tori can be even worse? Would Tori become the weird cryptic?
4. How would Itachis parents react to his teammates? Like, Mikoto must be over the moon that her best friend teaches her son. And we kinda know how she likes Deidara thanks to homemade dynamite, but it's DIFFERENT.
I love Minatos growing horror of Tori
They're Team 4 because I picked a random number and then went ".....oh yeah! the death number!" and realized I couldn't change it now. So Minato did approximately the same thing.
Minato: Oh, there's no active Team 4. I'll just assign that number.
Minato: Oh, there hasn't been a Team 4 since before the war. I wonder why?
Minato, after the ink is dry: oh right
Since it's an unlucky number, it just doesn't get assigned unless there's somehow too many teams to NOT assign it. Or if your Hokage was woken up at 4 AM by his eight year old giggling too loudly because he drew on the walls and assigned you a team number before he'd had his coffee.
Part of Tori's charm is that she just... comes off as very underwhelming? Like, she doesn't have strong main character vibes. She looks like she's someone's babysitter. One thing I wanted to play with in the snippet I posted is that even though Minato knows she worked for Orochimaru, he's still like: okay but she's a generic twelve year old girl. She must be the normal one. Sort of like a parallel take on how I write Minato, who looks like he'd cry if you were mean to him, but is secretly one of the deadliest ninja of all time.
Giving off background character vibes is great for being sneaky or forcing enemies to underestimate you! But yes it does mean your reputation in-village is "poor girl :(" or perhaps even a few "lucked out & doesn't deserve to be on that team."
I actually haven't thought super hard about what's up with Itachi's family. I kind of imagine there's a Naruto-Sasuke friendship, but it's the kind where your parents insist you're friends because they want to hang out with each other. So Sasuke probably meets Team 4 pretty early on, and Tori is the type of person who'd think it's really funny to intentionally and "harmlessly" troll an eight year old. As for Mikoto and Fugaku... this Itachi went into ANBU even YOUNGER and his only friend is Shisui, and also he's like 10x more terrifying because his life philosophy is still recovering from being a missing-nin. So I think they've semi-recently had the revelation that even if their son is a celebrated prodigy, they have uuuuuuuh fucked him up. Like a lot. So Itachi willingly hanging out with people his own age seems like a positive, and they're just going to blithely ignore Deidara complaining he found human teeth in his hair after that last mission, or Tori asking if he kept them.

Healing more than just physical wounds - SasuHina Month Day 2
A day late but I went until 3 AM finishing this. I was inspired by @deloscielos here on tumblr. Last year, they came up with this med ninja!Sasuke au and then it started poking at me and then this happened. Time line jumps a little, but for the most part Sasuke's points of veiw are in order, Naruto's is a flashforward and then in time. I'm not happy with how it ended but here we go!
“Knowing me, knowing you” | “Conociéndome,     conociéndote”
“Home is where you are” | “Mi hogar es donde estás     tú”
“When the hell is this so called Hokage’s council actually going to get a new Hokage? It’s bad enough that every doctor in this hospital feels like crap for being unable to save the Third’s life, even if it means he ruined Orochimaru, but this same hospital has an influx of patients from the Chunin Exam finals and everything that happened after. I’ve got you doing intake for a ninja who was supposed to be taking it easy after her heart was damaged during the preliminary round but the injury flared up due to nerves watching one of the matches. Not to mention during everything else, she got kidnapped by Cloud ninja. Honestly, it’d be a miracle at this rate if she passes rehab and get cleared for active duty again. And you should still be recovering.”
Sasuke rolled his eyes, used to the rambling of Mio. She’d just started as a nurse when his clan was killed, been the only one to find him when he’d go missing, talking and rambling the whole time. It used to be she didn’t know what to say to a kid who’s whole life was falling apart and later to a preteen who didn’t like talking to this, a rising nurse practitioner who could order him around during his shifts and yet still had something completely off topic to say. Most of that was currently complaining on how their entire village was at a standstill with the death of the Third and no one taking any interest in keeping their hospital running until a new Hokage was found.
He'd heard at least 3 different versions of this rant, including the part about him recovering from cracked ribs. Mio had been the one to clear him to come back to help at the hospital.
“File?”
“Huh? Oh, here. Dr. Sugo is her doctor, check in with him when you’re done.”
“Wait, Hyuuga Hinata? Her cousin almost killed her. Naruto kicked his ass during the finals.”
“Oh, another thing. he came with her for her check-up.”
“What?”
                                       ___________
Sasuke hated hospitals, more so when it meant his whole family was gone. He’d escape all the time, dragged back by unspeaking ANBU, forced to stay in a room ‘recovering’. Mio had been his jailbreak, even if it was her finding him when he hid in the hospital to avoid being alone in his room. She’d make him watch her do paperwork, do intakes, hell, she even took him to go watch a surgery. In the mess that his life was, the hospital started to become less of a prison and more of a place he didn’t have to think. After training and days at the academy, he’d head to the hospital working as a striper while also learning how to give shots, lift patients into wheelchairs, wrap wounds. He had very basic understanding of med-ninja skills but he was working his way to getting the training, even if most of their med-ninjas came from out of Konoha.
It was an open secret that he worked at the hospital. Mio and the other nurses acted as barriers for the insane fangirls who tried getting an appointment just to see him and he’d try not to lose his temper at idiot patients or their family members. Abuse cases were the worse, when the abuser would bring their victim in, acting like they should sew them up and hand them back over. he didn’t know Hyuuga Neji, but he fell into that category. Naruto explained his actions as family issues. Family issues left his whole clan slain. Family issues didn’t excuse nearly killing a family member and then acting like it was all fine.
“Hyuuga Hinata.”
“Ah, Sasuke-san. I didn’t realise you’d be working.”
“Hospital is a mess, so here we are. So, what brought you in?”
“Check up for my heart to check if I’m on track to go to rehab for field duty.”
“Right. The asshole sitting next to you nearly killed you. how’s your breathing been?”
“Excuse me? What did you just say to me?”
He gave his dullest look to the other Hyuuga. He remembered meeting him on their way to the first part of the chunin exams. Got angry quick when disrespected.
“I didn’t stutter. Now, breathing.”
“You don’t get to talk to me that way. Hinata-sama, you need another -”
“Nii-san, can you wait outside. Please?”
“Hinata-sama.”
“Please.”
He bowed to Hinata, glaring at him before storming out.
“I’m sorry about him.” Hinata said.
“It’s fine. breathing?”
“No difficulty since the exam.” She watched him write her response down and pull over the cart that had everything for intake. He wrapped a blood pressure cuff around her arm, fitting in the ears for the stethoscope and keeping it pressed against her arm, the other holding the pump to inflate. “He’s not bad usually.”
“Yeah, because guy’s nearly responsible for killing you are people to be reasoned with. Naruto told me if it wasn’t for his, mine and your senseis, you’d be dead.”
“It’s more complicated than that.”
“You can’t justify wanting to kill family for no reason other than a bad day.” He couldn’t think of any justification for what his brother did. He wanted to ‘test his skills’. Nothing would ever make that ok.
“My family treats those in the Branch family like slaves and Neji-niisan was under the impression that’s why his father died. I was kidnapped by Cloud ninja when I was three but my father killed the kidnapper and saved me. They wanted revenge and said they wanted my father in retaliation. My uncle took his place. According to Neji, his father knocked mine to the floor and told him he’d take his place no matter what to keep him safe. They never told Neji and we never spoke about what happened so it led to a lot of anger. I already deal with a lot of anger from my family just for who I am. Niisan doesn’t hate me and he’s working to make it up to me, so I don’t complain about what happened. I’m just exhausted having to act like all the anger and hate doesn’t bother me.”
He couldn’t find much to say. For one, he’d never heard her speak that much in the first place. For another, the idea the famed heiress had people who hated her made no sense. He didn’t know her and he’d actually admit he didn’t hate her. She didn’t fangirl at him, so bonus there, but still.
She didn’t say much for the rest of the intake, only speaking to answer questions.
“Doctor will be in soon.” He said, pushing the cart back.
“I’m glad you do healing.” She said as he got to the door. At his confused look, she got as red as she normally did, focused on her hands. “You’re nicer than Niisan. After what happened to your family, you could be like him but you’re not and I think that makes you stronger. And if you think about it, knowing about the human body means you’ll know just where to hit your brother to bring him down, better than he could.”
He didn’t think of it that way, let alone how the thing he’d been dragged into as a kid would actually help in his mission to take down his brother. He didn’t know if that’s why he said what he said next.
“Well, I guess if being nice makes me stronger, you’re stronger than I am.”
                                                 ________
Everything still felt groggy. Reliving the worst days of his life, over and over again made it impossible to sleep, but he pretended if to only get Sakura out of the room. There was the smallest hint of jealousy that Naruto was fine after an altercation involving the guy who bit him and left the uncontrollable power currently locked in him. It was next to the part that was in awe that the person behind most of the healing programs in the village was the one who woke him up. Mio hadn’t shut up about meeting Lady Tsunade, how she was coming back to the village to be the new Hokage and how the hospital would finally have a chance to run properly, even if they had Tsunade’s assistant in charge of them. Naruto said Shizune was pretty impressive on the battle field. He’d been considering getting proper training to be a med-nin, wondering if it would waste all the time Kakashi-sensei trained him. But once Sakura had pulled herself off of him and let Lady Tsunade check him over, Mio had brought it up.
“Really? How long have you been practising?”
“Since I was 8.”
“He actually works at the hospital, helping with small nursing tasks.”
“With your Sharingan, you’d actually be a lot more advanced than others, if you were interested in it.”
“Wouldn’t that mean he’d have to be village bound?” Naruto asked.
“Not necessarily. I could fit his training in with his normal hours here at the hospital. Let me know if you’re interested though.”
Now he was trying to figure out if he was really interested, if nothing else to keep him distracted. The door to his room slid open and Mio poked her head in.
“Are you up for visitors?” he started to grimace when she continued, the damned annoying ‘I know something you don’t’ on her face. “It’s not Sakura.” She didn’t say anything else, just opened the door more and let Hinata walk in. “I’ll bring lunch soon.”
“Um,” Hinata lifted the thermos in her hand up, “Is it ok if I brought food? I was in a medical coma and I couldn’t handle heavy foods for a while after.”
“Probably be better than what the kitchen cooked. Let me know if you still get hungry.” Mio told him before shutting the door
“Hi.” Hinata said, still standing.
He looked over to the chair Sakura had to of inhabited for the past 2 weeks. “Hi. What kind of soup?” he adjusted the tilt of his own bed, anything to keep him distracted. Out of everyone who was coming to visit, he didn’t expect it to be Hinata. He hadn’t forgotten what she told him when she came in for her check-up, that was only 3 weeks ago. It had been running through his head, half the reason he was really considering taking Lady Tsunade’s offer.
“Veggie. The Clan’s garden did rather well and since I’m not cleared for light training just yet, I need to find things to do with my time. This batch has a lot of tomatoes.” She handed him the thermos. “One of the few things I remember your fangirls gushing about. I always pictured you liking spice though.”
“My mother grew tomatoes in her garden and I used to get into it, sit down and eat as much as I could.”
He couldn’t tell you why he said that, why he admitted something about a time in his life he locked away since it became soaked in blood, but it came right out.
“I did the same with blueberries. My uncle called my blueberry for the rest of the time he was alive. Blueberry-sama. Though, I don’t remember liking them after he passed.”
He watched her pulled the sleeves of her jacket down, covering her hands even more, like she was trying to hide away. He didn’t know why the sight mad him upset.
“Other than not being passed for light training, are you ok?”
Hinata nodded. “I am. it was suggested that the stress of my Clan was causing me to heal slower so I’m actually staying with Kurenai-sensei. I think she’s dating Asuma-sensei, Ino-chan’s sensei.”
“Right, the smoker. He kept trying to light a cigarette when I found out about Kakashi. He looked so surprised when I yanked it from his lips.”
Watching her giggle, covered palm curled up and hiding her mouth, the faintest blush on her cheeks, it suddenly hit him like a lightning bolt.
He had feelings for Hinata. And somehow that didn’t scare him as much as he thought.
                                                   ___________
Naruto stormed away from the Old Hag’s office, still steaming over being put on this mission with Lee’s team. Take care of some family who overtook a village. He did that already with Gato. He had better things to do with his time. If he wanted to get strong enough to drag Orochimaru back or kill him – whichever came first – so all the extra power Sasuke was saddled with thanks to that insane mission could go away, he needed to get stronger. Sasuke was practically barred from missions until he got his Curse Seal under control, not to mention all the hours at the hospital and medical training. He wasn’t complaining once about not getting stronger to defeat his brother, so Naruto had to do it for him.
“Ready?”
“As I’ll ever be, I guess. Sorry you’re my first patient.”
Naruto looked over and saw Sasuke out on the stairwell with…Hinata? They were looking at something in Sasuke’s hands and Hinata had a hand on the arm closer to her.
“Hey Sasuke!” he yelled, interrupting them, though they only moved enough to see who it was and Hinata didn’t really move her hand. “What’s going on?”
“Sasuke-kun is going to heal his first patient.”
A blue bird, who was balancing themselves in the bowl of Sasuke’s hands had a bandage wrapped around one of its wings.
“I’m going to try and hopefully not fuck it up for life.” Sasuke grumbled, winding the bandage off. Hinata took her hand off Sasuke’s arm to take the bandage and they watched the bird attempt to flap. Sasuke’s chakra was visible, green in colour, hand over the bird’s wing. when it faded, the wing was obviously stronger and in no time, it flew out of Sasuke’s hand and into the sky.
“You did it!” Hinata cheered and Sasuke smiled. It was less of his normal smirk and an actual smile.
“Training’s obviously going well.” He said, if to distract from the scene in front of him.
“It’s a little hard to tell who’s the hardest teacher, Kakashi or Lady Tsunade.”
“Naruto!” Lee suddenly interrupted, stopping when he saw who he was with. “Oh, Hinata-chan. And Sasuke, my eternal love rival!” Sasuke rolled his eyes. “Normally, I’d focus on telling you all the reason’s I’m better for Sakura-chan, but not right now. Naruto, I must speak with you!”
“Lunch?” Hinata asked, turning to Sasuke and putting her hand back on his arm, her free one this time. They barley disappeared inside before Lee yanked him away past the victim of Tsunade’s chair and to Ichiraku’s.
As Lee explained the Kurosuki family’s connection to Itachi, in hopes of finding him so Sasuke had proper information when he was finally allowed on missions again, Naruto couldn’t get what he saw out of his head.
“Has Hinata-chan always hung out with Sasuke?” he asked as Lee started to drink his broth.
“Hmm? Oh, well I noticed they’d always go for lunch, back when the others were recovering from recovery mission and Sasuke was working on them?”
He remembered that. Sasuke had been impossible then, shouldering everything that happened to the others and nearly working himself to an early death picking up nurse duties. He lightened up after a while but he assumed it was Sasuke accepting he couldn’t change what happened.
“How long have they been hanging out for?”
“Neji mentioned he was the intake nurse for Hinata-chan’s first check up after the Third’s death. I think they just kept bumping into each other after.
                                              ________________
Naruto didn’t know how right Lee was. They did continue to bump into each other, spending time and getting closer. As much as her family thought her weak because of her kindness, they didn’t know – no one knew actually – just how instrumental she was in keeping Sasuke in the village.
“Your first mission without your sensei. I guess we’ll be doing more of those types of missions now.”
Hinata was in his apartment, watching him pack for the Land of Tea.
“it means I have more time to think. Can’t exactly start training to be a med-nin if the village is stretched thin as it is.” He still hadn’t given Tsunade an answer and he felt like he had to soon. “What about you? you got cleared for training finally. You’ve got a few more sessions before you get cleared for missions again, right?”
Nodding and tucking her legs under her, she leaned forward slightly, looking excited. “Niisan has been trying to teach me how to do Gentle Fist techniques. I’m not nearly as good at them but I got the idea from the Rotation technique about creating a short of shield with chakra, but in a different way. It’d be less releasing chakra from my points and more of moving to catch each attack from around me.”
Sasuke watched her gushing about her new technique, his knowledge over how he felt still hanging in the back of his head.
“What?” she asked, noticing him staring.
“Nothing. You just seemed really excited. Usually, any mention of training has you mentioning how your dad won’t stop asking when you can start again and how Neji has been going a little overboard in trying to right his wrongs.”
Hinata shrugged. “I don’t know if this will change how my thinks of me, but they won’t be able to deny I’m incapable of giving up.”
“I look forward to seeing you prove them all wrong.”
He’d forgotten about what Hinata told him with everything that happened on the mission. As the only person with injuries that landed him in the hospital, all the jealousy he’d been pushing down, watching Naruto get better and stronger while he was usually left with the injuries, built up. Mio kept them from his room, noticing how easily he’d been getting annoyed, only letting Hinata in. he felt bad that he made her sit with his stony silence, probably so reminiscent of her own father. She didn’t say much, only asking once if he was ok and if he wanted anything. Before she left, she put a hand on his arm and told him she was glad he was ok. The apology was right on the tip of his tongue when she left as Sakura tried coming in. it went down hill after that. He snapped at Sakura, fought Naruto and got to see just how powerful he was and was given a lecture by Kakashi-sensei. At the end of it all, the Sound Four made a pretty compelling case.
It would have been so easy to just go. No one had any right to stop him from getting stronger. But Mio, in her fashion of never leaving him alone, stopped by as he was escaping the hospital.
“I don’t know what’s going on with you, but here. Hinata left this for you. says she hopes you feel better.” It was a thermos of tomato veggie soup, as they started calling the it after she brought it whenever she visited him in the hospital.
Instead of going home and packing, he went to Lady Tsunade and told her everything. After it was pointed out that the Sound Four had to of been with Orochimaru during the Chunin Exam finals, the most insane plan was made. Sasuke would go, do what they wanted and allow them to take him to the Sound Village. While a better equipped team was being assembled, a smaller one, first of chunin to weaken and then of genin and one chunin would follow after them, playing trying to get him back. He’d taken the pill, fell into a dead like sleep, the only instruction given to keep going past the Valley of the End if he has to go by himself. He got to the Valley, feeling his body ready to burst with use of the Level 2 Curse Mark when Naruto found him, without a mark as usual. Sasuke couldn’t remember what started the fight, verbal this time, but he and Naruto screamed at each other, venting their jealousies and anger.
He remembered what his brother told him about Mangeko Sharingan and as much as he hated Naruto, he didn’t hate him. Not enough to kill him. Not enough to forget he’d been risking his life to get him back.
It took a while for his body to process the new power he had but the moment he was said to be in the clear, he did what he usually did and escaped his hospital room, instead working on the retrieval team, specifically the one of his classmates. Shikamaru and Kiba were mostly fine, Kiba scoffing at his apology.
“For some reason, Hinata likes hanging out with you. honestly, that’s the only reason I gave a crap about getting you back. I would have said good riddance.”
The petty part of him was tempted to remind him Naruto would have kicked his ass if he tried that, if the semi-finals were anything to go by. But the part that made him return and a good amount of guilt just had him bow his head and send in Kiba’s sister for Akamaru.
Choji had been the first to wake from his surgery, waving off his apology with his normal laid-back attitude.
“Shouldn’t you be resting though? I don’t really know why they had you in that gourd, but it couldn’t have been good.”
“I’m fine.”
“You look kind pale to me.”
“You nearly died from a mix of chakra overuse and lack of nutrients in your body. Trust me, I’m fine.”
He was lucky Choji stopped asking questions. He seemed the least likely to judge but Sasuke didn’t want to break down in front of him.
Neji took the longest to wake up, still in the ICU. Sasuke had been putting on protective gear over his clothes, tucking his hair away when he noticed Neji had a visitor. Unsure Hinata would want to see him, he added a face mask, focused on checking vitals and getting out. But much like her family, he underestimated her. He’d barely reached the bed when she stopped him, pulling his mask down, looking releveled at the sight of him.
“Hi.”
“Hi.”
“You’re ok.”
“I’m fine. other than my neck killing me and my skin itching, I’m fine.”
They constantly did this, just open up to each other without thinking. It’s probably why when she pulled him into a hug, it didn’t feel weird or sudden.
“I know you were supposed to come back anyway, but I’m really glad you did.”
“Your cousin hates me already. I think he’d hate me more if I made him go through all this for nothing.”
Hinata’s laugh was watery, but it was a laugh none the less. She pulled away, wiping away stray tears, taking him in. “Have you gotten any rest? Mio-san was only able to tell me so much.”
“I’ve been cleared so thought I’d do something useful.”
“Come get something to eat with me.”
Sasuke blinked down at her, confused. Her cousin was in the ICU and she wanted to eat?
“I’ve been here as long as possible and we’re only allowed one visitor at a time. My father has come by a few times and I’m sure he’d like a chance to visit. So, take me somewhere to eat.”
He couldn’t find a reason to say no, so he nodded. He didn’t realise it would be Hinata’s way of checking up on him while he was bared from leaving the village after Naruto and Sakura’s hairbrained idea of going to find Orochimaru themselves set off an unwanted Level 2 transformation. He didn’t regret getting his med-nin training but having Hinata around made him feel less like clawing at the walls.
“Lunch?” it started to become his favourite question.
                                          _____________
Naruto followed Sakura to the hospital. Back after 2 years of training and hearing that Sasuke was a full med-nin made him feel just as proud. He didn’t forget what he and Sasuke said to each other and he wasn’t blind to Sasuke upset about being bared from leaving the village.
“How has Sasuke been? Were any restrictions lifted?”
“Not really. Anko and Kakashi helped him train his Level 2 Curse Seal but only under supervision. But…” Sakura stopped turning to Naruto. “He…he’s been different.”
“Bad different?”
“No, just…he’s been hanging out with Hinata a lot.”
“Yeah?” this wasn’t news. Before he left, he almost always found them together. He was usually waiting for her when she came back from missions, had been a worried mess when she came back with a sprained ankle during the buried treasure test mission and had been with him the day, he went to say goodbye.
“I think he’s dating her.”
That…that would make a lot of sense. He could tell the idea upset Sakura, no doubt still holding on to feelings for him but he’d never seen Sasuke actually hang out with people that wasn’t the rest of his team or Mio and the hospital staff and that was if he had no choice.
Hinata was a choice.
“Ok.”
“Ok? That’s all you have to say?” Sakura asked, angry.
“Well, they were always together and she was with him the day the Sound Four came by. If he is, you can’t stop him.”
It was made even more apparent when Mio – who loudly welcomed him back, not changing a bit other than shorter hair and a tattoo – told them Sasuke went for dinner with Hinata since his shift was over. he let Sakura drag him all over the village, waving and talking to villagers, including Iruka-sensei. While distracted by the adult he trusted the most telling him about training Sakura in fuinjutsu when she let out a scream. He found her at the entrance of a restaurant, just getting there as Sasuke pulled away from kissing Hinata.
While that long awaited conversation happened, he leaned against the wall of the entrance with Hinata.
“It’s really good to see you again. Your hair has gotten longer.” Hinata started when the silence was starting to get awkward as Sakura’s voice rose.
“You too. It’s kinda weird to see you in long hair. But you look good. Any more amazing jutsus you’ve been working on?”
“A few.” She replied a mischievous smile on her face.
“You know,” he pointed out, “you’re different from before. it’s not a bad thing but you’re more out there and open. Sasuke to thank for that?”
“More like, I let something go and decided to go for something different. I had feelings for someone and while it helped give me confidence, it sort of had a limit on myself. If I got that person to notice me, I’d be ok. With Sasuke, it felt like I didn’t have to try as hard. Pushing myself felt less like a demand and more of a want. I wanted be this new person, Sasuke to always think I could to it. with each interaction, we got to know each other better and I think it helped us become who we are today.”
He nodded to himself. Hinata seemed way more confident than before and he’d guess Sasuke was probably way less sullen. He’d been worried that anything would send Sasuke leaving straight to Orochimaru but clearly, Sasuke had more important things to worry about. Honestly, the snake and Sasuke’s brother wouldn’t know what hit them once they saw this Sasuke, he was sure of it.

hi Torship 💛
How tall is everyone in your hope au? Like you mentioned a few times that shisui and inocihi are the same height so how tall is everyone else? Have a good day/night 💛
Hey Anon!
Sorry for leaving this in my inbox for so long but I have Reasons behind everyone's heights lol so I'm sorry if you wanted just a quick list of numbers but I've no chill 🤣
So most Shinobi are Athletes in my mind (the performance of the body is a tool as well as a lifestyle) and I don't mean bodybuilder 5% fat etc etc I mean high performance and high usability.
The Uchiha go one of three ways:
Mikoto is slight at 5'6 ish, Shunsuke was about the same height and so was Kagami, Itachi won't get much taller than this because he takes almost completely after his mother. Hikaku from the Warring Clans era was also like this etc, it's the most common body type in the Clan (gotta love that inbreeding, eh). Think pilates, flexibility over brute strength. Izuna was about 5'6, lean to match his katana.
Fugaku is a little broader, starting to hit that slight softening of fitness because he's got a steady in-Village job and he's doing desk work as well as hitting forty BUT he's also keeping busy and he trains hard on Saturdays. Sasuke gets to be a little taller than him but lean, think 'tennis player'. Flexible and strong but mainly limber. They're both around the 5'8 mark, which they shared with Madara and Tajima etc.
Shisui and his mother Kana are the third type, which is "I didn't know Uchiha got that tall" 🤣 Kana was a taijutsu mistress so think "heavy AND strong" and she was about 6'1, which is how Shisui reaches about 6'1-2.
Shisui was a whippet of a kid, he was one of those high metabolism teenagers and lingered around 5'6 (giving Itachi false hope that they'd be about the same height and making Mikoto nostalgic for Shunsuke and Kagami) until he hit 17 and fucking exploded upwards another 3-4 inches lmao. Coupled with the fact he was a Rookie ANBU at that age, so at the peak of his training, and with a crazy appetite... The gains also hit. He has an ass, I'm so proud :')
So... Why did I make Shisui that tall?
The simple answer is because Inoichi is.
There are big wordy cinematic parallels between Shisui and Inoichi somehow ending up at exactly the same height and size, of them being parallel and equal and exactly at eye height. It makes them look more alike, more uncanny when they move in sync or copy mannerisms, and it makes Inoichi appear like a third parent in Shisui's genetics lmao.
But, to be honest, it was just a huge vibe.
Shisui in canon was this little slip of a kid, same as Itachi, and it always hurt to be reminded that he never got the chance to actually come out the other side of puberty. That's also why Inoichi in No Tomorrow/HOPE AU has those moments of realising how grown up Shisui is, because we're supposed to remember that this is someone who never reached full adulthood.
Note: I do generally age Shisui up. Canon/Fanon has him around 14-16 at the time of his death and I usually aim for around 19/20.
I also enjoy the imagery of Shisui, who is known for his speed, not being built like a whippet marathon runner but being more like Usain Bolt (who is a whopping 6'5 with muscles to spare) and a decent head taller than most of his Clan. So 🤣 you end up with a whole yowling pack of Uchihas, like serious feline energy, and then Itachi hopping around like a little blackbird... And then Shisui as this huge fucking corvid bird in the middle 🤣.
Squad Two
Kakashi is about 5'11. The hair makes him taller as much as his posture makes him smaller. Sakumo was a strong man with strong shoulders and Kakashi is a little finer, a hit that Gai would barely feel would make Kakashi stagger, which is why he's so crafty and brutally efficient. Frankly, Kakashi is lucky to get this tall; weighing up the cons of a kid who doesnt care about himself being the only source of meals and nutrition for himself from four years old (Kushina's ramen doesn't count) VS Kakashi being training obsessed and having a protein meal plan??? He has very little extra weight on him, Kakashi is the one who looks like a marathon runner/cyclist.
Genma: 5'7. He's average height, average built, he has a slinkiness that the others lack because he's an assassin and that means endurance and flexibility. He is silent, can squeeze through tiny gaps, and he definitely has damaged tendons from dislocating his thumbs etc too often. Think Ballerina (Ballerino have heckin strong thighs, which Genma doesn't much), pilates, contortionist.
Raidou: 5'9, just another dude. Raidou is an all rounder so he's got functional strength and endurance. A decent amount of body weight, soft muscle definition and a fuck tonne of callouses to go with that scar tissue. He was also raised by civilians who own a spice shop so he always ate very well and his parents often give him extra food because they worry about his health. I like to think Raidou is the only one with an ass-ass.
Tenzo: at this moment in HOPE AU, Tenzo is still a teen and he's still slight. He's currently 5'8 but he will reach 5'10, and he's only just begun to show signs of those amazing Canon shoulders. As someone with a LOT of nature chakra, his muscle buildup is quite dense. He'll be the most muscular of the Squad by the time he's thirty. Right now? He's still coltish and sweet.
Shisui: see above^
Other Characters
Inoichi: 6'1, see above^
Sora: 5'5, soft but strong, lots of freckles and callouses and stretch marks because she isn't a Shinobi (the body is a tool, blah blah) so she just exists and enjoys ❤️
Ino: bby. She'll be 6ft one day tho, the tallest girl in her year by a lot~
Kushina/Mito/Uzumaki: poppet rockets. Max 5'2, if that. Change my mind (syke, you can't). Kushina was like a little ball of anger, Mito was like a perfect doll, Naruto is gonna be so so angry that Sasuke is so much taller 🤣🤣🤣. This doesn't help that theyre chakra dense so grow quick and build muscle, where the Uchiha have excess yin chakra (as do the Hyuuga and Nara), so they have much later growth spurts... so Naruto was the same height as everyone else in the Academy and the rage and disbelief will kick in when they all get taller but he stays the same lmao. They are small and strong and from a distance their chakra is monstrous so you think you're dealing with a giant and then this little petit figure with chakra like a goddamn sun yeets you into space for calling them 'squirt'.
Minato: 5'8, svelte muscles. Average height for a man but did that stop Kushina from being annoyed? No ❤️
Anko: 5'4, curvy as fuck and with thighs that can crush watermelons amen
Gai: BEEFCAKE 6FT. A beautiful youthful Bear. Look up Strong Man Challenge and then also think about woodsmen with huge arms and shoulders and matching thighs. No ripped abs, because that's erring into dehydration etc etc. Gai 🤝 Kronk = Amazing Shoulders, Arms and Back, never skips leg day
Konan: 5'8, Ballerina (but impacted by malnutrition :/)
Jiraiya: 6'4, built like a fucking Ox, the hair is like a cloak and then you hit him and it's like a brick wall. Lots of strength, big belly as well as decades of muscle compaction, I feel like one step would snap a spine yk yk
Tsunade: 5'6, she has those Poppet Rocket Uzumaki genes but Hashirama (he was 6'4, Senju average at around 6ft-6'5, Tobirama was 6'2) was a literal tree so it balanced out a bit more. She has the Most Beautiful Biceps in the world. The definition of Girlbossing the weight room with a manicure and stilettos.
Orochimaru: okay but I love the idea that he's like 6'3 with a ridiculous shoulder to waist ratio and these long, slightly ghoulish, limbs. Like he has these long, dramatic features and big hands, long fingers, boney and sinewy and just very pale and very otherworldly. Beautiful in a disconcerting way, a little too much the serpent.
Tiger: She's a Yamanaka, so she's minimum 5'9, think volleyball. Same with Fū.
Kisame: you KNOW i gotta explain Kisame in full, it's deserved. He is canonically huge. He is Heckin. However.... We gotta have some moderation (stop booing in the back row) because otherwise I have some Concerns about Kisame's more human ancestors and logistics 🤣. So I've got Kisame pinned at around 6'7 ✨. He's bulked up like Gai but not quite, think more male Gymnast (especially the hanging ring demonstrations) crossed with a woodcutter. Lots of shoulder, back and arm strength. He's in the three way hand shake (or arm grip a la Schwarzenegger gif) with Gai and Kronk, he also respects leg day. Like Gai, he has great glutes too.
Non-human sizes:
Note: Japanese Crows are usually either 'jungle crows' or 'carrion crows' but both generally grow to 50cm/19inches in length with a wingspan that's max. 100-130cm/40-60inches. This is for proportional reference. ....who am I kidding, I'm just gonna fuck around.
Akira: he's the size of a big housecat, a decent armful (30 inches approx, 2'6ft) with a wingspan that's around 70 inches.... Which is taller than Itachi 🤣 omfg
Arakan: he's about the size of a common black bird (11 inches long, wingspan around 28inches, so about Akira's length)
Kana: she is WOW. I compared her to an ox cart and a nightmare, so the imagery is great but it didn't do her justice. A Moose (😈) is about 6ft at the shoulder but upwards of 7ft including antlers so... If that's her length... that puts Kana's wingspan at 14ft across. Stunning 👏 Toad Summons have a collective fear 👏
This answer took me several hours and I've made this far too complicated but 🤷 enjoy!
Have a great day, anon ☺️
