#9/11 commemorative slice

the thing about 9/11 is that it got used post facto to justify all sorts of hideous jingoistic shit but also it was a genuine devastating human tragedy and i really pretty deeply resent people's deciding that the—absolutely gross, don't get me wrong—way it's been culturally positioned justifies their making jokes about the event itself.
#like. my mother worked basically next door and watched people fall to horrific deaths and had to make her way home thru the horror#and was quite frankly never the same again#and like. the idea that people can look at that and dehumanize all those who died enough to be comfortable making jokes—#i personally think is deeply fucked up and not in fact any kind of ~social justice~#like roll yr eyes at the overblown commemorative pomp and circumstance all you want but like. real people died absolutely horrific deaths#and being flippant about it—sucks‚ actually‚ even if they WERE ~complacent americans who supported capitalism~ or whatever#(not to mention like. it was a really wide slice of humanity actually. but god forbid we consider the actual people as people)#anyway i deeply resent that i feel the need to make this post at all#bc quite frankly i would be more than glad to let the event fade out of active memory and think that's probably the best way to move forward#but unfortunately fucking br*nd*nicus is apparently out here making posts abt how the ~anniversary is worthy of derision~#and it's like. what if we just. let it go without either the weird performative jingoistic bullshit OR being fucking dicks.#anyway whatever i guess i'm not like. appropriately leftist or something#but personally i don't think real people's horrifying deaths are cool to make cracks about. sorry if that makes me a conservative buzzkill.#like i get that it was different outside of new york or washington but like. some of us were IN new york actually.#and yeah to be clear people in the middle east subsequently died similarly horrific deaths because of the way 9/11 got leveraged#and we ought to respect and remember those too#doing THAT on 9/11 would imo be a lot more meaningful than sneering at dead americans but also it would actually take work and sincerity#neither of which most tumblr users are up for

yard work - chapter 11 (regina george x reader)
fandom: Mean Girls (all media)
pairing: Regina George x OFC/Reader
summary: You'd been in the same class as Regina George since kindergarten. You'd lived on the same street even longer. Once upon a time, when life was sandbox disputes and who got the swing first arguments, you'd even been friends. Now, in junior year of high school, you doubted she even remembered you. The same couldn't be said about you. You definitely remembered her.
chapter 1 / chapter 2 / chapter 3 / chapter 4 / chapter 5 / chapter 6 / chapter 7 / chapter 8 / chapter 9 / chapter 10 / chapter 12
Tumblr media
Making the scrapbook was cathartic. Remembering the good times, the innocence of your childhood, was as much of a joy as it was painful. The pictures were all quite good quality since Abuela had had a film camera. Some photos had been taken with a digital camera, which had probably originally belonged to the Georges and ended up in your possession somewhere along the way.
Regina and yourself playing in the Georges' backyard and swimming in their pool, beaming smiles directed at the camera. You could almost hear the laughter. I miss when we used to be able to just have fun together like this. I guess it's a part of growing up.
Regina in a white frilly dress, carrying a small basket of flower petals, donning a crown of roses on her head. She was pouting, clearly unimpressed by the whole thing. You hadn't been at the wedding since it was a George event, but Regina's mom had been so elated her daughter had gotten to be the flower girl. I remember I was so jealous you got to go to a wedding and I couldn't. You hated it, though, which was funny. You used to leave the room whenever your mom insisted we watch the tape. I wonder if she still has it.
You sitting with Regina, hip to hip, on plastic chairs while a newlyborn Kylie slept in your laps. Regina, eyes stuck on her baby sister and a thoughtful look on her face, while you looked at the camera with a smile. She's growing up so fast. Don't think I don't know you care about her. There's gonna be a time you'll regret not spending time with her. I already feel it.
Mrs George, Abuela, Regina, Kylie in her mom's arms, and you grouped together at a parking lot. You and Regina had on little graduation gowns and had scrolls in your hands. Elementary school graduation. The summer before middle school. End of an era. I love your mom's clothes, they're so nineties. Does she still have those jeans? You should get ahold of them before somebody else does...
Remember when I sliced my hand open when we were peeling apples? That was a time for sure. I still have the scar!
You taped pictures onto the pages, wrote little things here and there, hoping the labour of your love wouldn't end up in the garbage. Or if it did, Regina would read skim through it first.
I think this album was the first time we agreed on music. Britney Spears really brought us together, huh? We even learned the choreography of Baby One More Time. Mrs George loved it. I bet there's a video of that somewhere.
Mostly the scrapbook was filled with anecdotes about your childhoods together. You did write a letter of sorts on the first page, regarding your intentions with the whole thing.
I made this for you to commemorate the good times we had. You know me regrettably well, so I think you know how I tend to hold onto things. I still have that gaudy pink Build-A-Bear you made me for Valentine's Day that one time. It's one of my most important possessions, only second to the memories we have together. You'll always be a friend to me, Reggie. If not forever, or from now on, then back then. I love you. Yours, Jorts.
You'd pretty much finished the whole thing by the end of the weekend. You spent Monday and Tuesday decorating the front cover, mostly because you purposefully put it off. You cut out letters from magazines and glued them there, painstakingly forming the words Reggie & Jorts. You'd tried to come up with something clever, but making a pun or a dumb joke felt like cheapening the whole album. A simple name made up for with fabulous decorations!
You weren't much of a painter, but you figured it'd be fitting if the album reflected its contents. It was fine if the roses you painted looked like a five-year-old did them. A good majority of the pictures featured you and Regina huddled around a crafts table, similar projects scattered all around you, young with clumsy hands but filled with artistic passion.
The album in itself was an earthy green colour, something Regina undoubtedly found ugly. The flowers brightened it up somewhat, but there was only so much ages-old acrylic paints could do. You outlined some with Sharpies. If you didn't know better, one could assume it looked like that on purpose.
You took it with you to school on Wednesday. You had it weighing your backpack down the whole day. You sweated under all your layers, and by the end of it, you were sure you were sporting some epic pit stains. Gross, but you were so nervous. You hadn't broken into anyone's locker in so long. And it was Regina George's locker.
You loitered around the hallways as they emptied out steadily, people heading home or off to extracurriculars. As you approached Regina's locker, you swallowed down your nervousness and got to work.
It wasn't hard. The combination locks were all old and weak, more of a formality than an actual barrier between one's stuff and a burglar. The lock clicked open easily and you wasted no time in stuffing your album inside.
"Hey!" Just as the resounding click of the lock going back into place came, a voice called out to you. "What are you doing with Regina's locker?"
"Uhh..." Gretchen Wieners stood at the intersection of hallways, hands on her hips and accusatory eyes burning holes in you. You made the swift decision that you did not have time for this. You booked it.
"Hey! Get back here!" Gretchen, surprisingly considering her heels, started after you. "What did you put in it? You cannot prank Regina, or- or, oh, was it a bomb?"
"It's not a bomb!" You shouted over your shoulder, sprinting towards the exit. The aggressive clacking of Gretchen's heels on the floors as she ran after you would surely haunt your nightmares. How could she even keep up with you?
"If it's not a bomb then what!" How was she closing in on you? It seemed like she was not even fazed by your little race, meanwhile, you were already winded. The exit was not that far away, but it felt like miles.
"It's Regina's business now! Ask her tomorrow at school or something!" The doors to freedom approached. "Stop chasing me!"
"Stop running!"
"No!"
You burst out and quickly hopped down the stairs, two at a time. Gretchen was still on your tail, but once she got to the top of the stairs shouted: "Karen! Tackle her!"
You hadn't even noticed Karen fucking Shetty. There was no not noticing her when the girl sprinted at you with perfect athletic form and squashed you like a linebacker.
You collided and flew into the snow. Better than the concrete of the footpath but it still hurt like a bitch.
"Get off of me!" You tried to get out from under her, but Karen was surprisingly dense. She was small but it was as if there were stones in her body instead of organs. "Fuck!"
"Keep her there, Karen, very good."
"Thanks!" Karen beamed, which was a much more common expression on her than the bloodlust she'd shown earlier.
"This has nothing to do with you." You snarled, still wriggling. "This is between Regina and me."
"Whatever's between Regina is between us," Gretchen said, all hoity-toity. "Now, tell me exactly what you put in her locker."
"A fucking photo album." You hissed, closing your eyes and clenching your jaw. What lie could you come up with? "Our families used to know each other. It's mostly pictures of her, so I just thought to... Return it."
"Oh, that's so nice!" Karen's hold loosened and you went to escape.
"Nuh-uh, not good enough." Just like that, Karen's weight slammed back down onto you. Your breath wooshed out of your lungs.
"What more do you want?" You wheezed out, getting sick and tired of this.
"Why was it in your possession?"
"I don't fucking know! It just was!"
"Hmm. And why couldn't you just give it to her?"
"You think that would've gone well, Gretchen? Seriously?" You turned your head with great effort, staring up at the girl. "Please, just let me go."
"I don't think I believe you." Gretchen squatted next to your head. "We're going back and checking it's what you say it is. And then you might be free to go."
"Fuck you." You hissed but made no move to book it when Karen hauled you up.
"That's not very nice." Karen pointed out.
"I don't want to be nice to Gretchen right now." You had no real issue with Karen, even if she had just tackled you.
"Oh, okay." You couldn't see her when she was holding your wrists behind your back, but you could imagine she was bobbing her head up and down like she was known to do.
You were walked back into the building, going mostly without a fight. Gretchen strutted along proudly as if capturing you was some great victory. Regina had trained her well. You weren't sure if that was impressive or just sad.
"Open it." Gretchen gestured once you were back at Regina's locker.
"I need my hands to do that." You helped out, smiling at Gretchen like she was stupid. Sputtering and offended, she instructed Karen to let go.
Instead of running like you should've, taking the chance you could get out if Karen didn't get a one-up on you, you obediently cracked the code again. Was it selfish that you kind of wanted others to know about you and Regina? Was it totally horrible of you to want to know it was real and have proof of that? Well, if it was, there was no helping it.
Gretchen snatched the album from the locker before you could even think to touch it. Karen sidled up to her, peering over her shoulder as she opened it.
You stood by, waiting for their judgement and looking at the ceiling. There'd been a water leak right there, based on the discolouration. Gross.
"You... You're J. J is for Jorts." Gretchen said. She sounded weird, like hollow or something. "J is for Jorts." She said again, breathy and disbelieving.
"What?" What the fuck was going on?
Karen spoke then. "She talks about J a lot. Like, a lot a lot. A whole lot." You nodded slowly as Karen went on. "J's like, her true love. It's so cute."
"J is not her true love, Karen! They are both girls." Gretchen pointed out. You had to agree. "Are they?" She looked you up and down judgementally.
"Yes. I am a girl." You said. It was true, you were female and around the age that it was acceptable to be referred to as a girl. Even so, it made you distinctly uncomfortable.
"Hmm." Gretchen didn't seem to believe you. Karen was busy cooing at the pictures of small Regina. It was sheer luck they hadn't bothered to read your writings.
"Look, can I go now? I know I'm busted, you're probably gonna confiscate the album, and Regina will never see it. Happy?"
"No. Karen, please put it back in the locker." Gretchen said, not taking her eyes off of you. Karen did as asked with a pout. "What is your relationship with Regina?" The album was back in the locker, but it hadn't been locked again.
"Nothing." And that was true. There was nothing there anymore.
"That's a lie and you know it. If you're J, then you've known each other at least since middle school. Based on the pictures, even longer."
"Who is J?" You asked in exasperation.
"Somebody who she has protected for years now. Somebody who is always better than we could ever be." Gretchen pointed between herself and Karen. "J is important to her."
"Okay, well, good for J, I guess."
"You're so infuriating." Gretchen sighed, pinching the skin between her eyes.
"You aren't the first to tell me that."
"Of course, because Regina has said that to you. Because you've known each other forever. Because you're J."
"Listen, I may look a bit butch, but I have a perfectly ordinary girl name."
"That is not the point!" She spoke fast and high-pitched. "You. It's you. You've been under our noses this entire time! Do you realize how much easier things could've been if you were around?"
"Excuse me?" Now, you were really lost.
"You're excused," Karen said cheerfully. You nodded to her in thanks.
"We could never be as good as you. It was like we were placeholders for the ultimate pretty girl she'd somehow let slip. And it's you. In a flannel and hoodie, ratty jeans, dirty shoes, no fashion sense to speak of. It's you." She said that last part with contempt.
You were reeling. Regina had talked about you to these two. Had compared them to you, cited that you were better. For years she'd done that. She'd never forgotten about you.
"Look, Gretchen, I'm sorry Regina's treated you badly." You'd lost the need to defend her, even still. Then again, even if you hadn't, there was little you could argue about with the two she'd tormented the most. "You can probably tell this is something Regina doesn't want coming out."
"What does that matter?" Gretchen asked, eyes far away and legs beginning to pace. "We could- could finally bring her down. Yes. We have J, we have everything she wants. She'll come grovelling."
You took a deep breath. You didn't feel angry, you were too tired to get angry at mean girls at this point. Besides, nobody could rile you up like Regina.
"You're wrong." You put it plainly. "What Regina's been doing to these people, to everyone around her, is wrong. But what I find despicable is how everybody is the same. I know her reasons, I can sympathise with her, but I can't say the same for you. So tell me." You paused to take a deep breath. "Why?"
"I'm not good at riddles, I'm sorry." Karen said, looking genuinely apologetic.
"It's okay, Karen, Gretchen can answer for you both."
"She deserves it." Gretchen said, steel in her tone.
"You sound just like Cady Heron and Janis 'Imi'ike. She hurt them too. What do you think ruining her life will achieve?"
"I'll be the new Regina George."
"Do you hear yourself? You still idolize her. If you're gonna be the new Regina George, it's always going to be a Regina George world. Don't you want to be Gretchen Wieners?"
"No!" She screeched. "Gretchen Wieners is lame, boring, too eager, a slut, desperate-" She took a deep breath.
"Okay." You said. "Why? Because Regina said so? Why would you believe her? She's just the same as you. Look," You pulled the album back out.
"Here we're in the Georges' pool. She would not go to the deep end. Y'know, she refused to even go in without those arm floaties for the longest time. Eventually, some boy made fun of her for them and that was the last time.
"And in this one we're driving back from summer camp. Regina was already tall enough to go without a booster seat, but I wasn't. She'd just thrown the biggest tantrum 'cause Mrs George didn't allow her to take off her seatbelt to sleep. She went out like a light, anyway.
"We're in Six Flags there. We'd just gotten those ice creams and you can see that Regina's isn't sticking to the cone all that well. Right after the shot, it just slid off. Regina was inconsolable. I offered her mine so we could share, and that seemed to be good enough for her but her dad was not having it. He threatened to take us home if she didn't stop crying right then, that it'd be all her fault that their whole family wasted money and time on this stupid trip. Eventually she calmed down and Mr George didn't have to drive us back."
You sighed. "I already tried this with Janis, in a way. I don't think Regina would appreciate me airing out her personal life like this, but... I don't know..." You closed your eyes for a moment. "I just want people to stop making things worse for her. She's been so wrong for so long, and I know I can't keep defending her, but I just don't think revenge will make her regret anything that she's done."
Karen hummed. "My auntie's been teaching me about karma. So, like, if she feels what she's made others feel, then won't that like... Fix her?"
"I don't want to hurt her." You said, resolute. "Maybe, it could be the most effective way to make her see her shortcomings. But I don't want to. I do not want to hurt her." You looked between the two. "And that's where we differ, I guess."
Gretchen didn't say anything, eyes glued to a picture from the Six Flags trip. Regina had mustard and ketchup smeared all over her face while she was holding a napkin to your lips, in the process of wiping your face.
With that, you snatched the album from her hands, deposited it back into the locker and slammed it shut. The lock clicked. Without a word, you began to talk towards the exit. Neither of them followed you or said anything to you.
You couldn't stop people from taking their revenge. You had done your best to be diplomatic. Evoking sympathy in hormonal teenagers wasn't something easily done, or maybe you were just shitty at it, but there was little else you could do. If you went ahead and retaliated, hurt them for hurting someone you cared about, the lines blurred.
You'd just be another mean girl.
Notes: Sorry for the delay! The next chapter will be the last one, unless I start rambling or something. After that, I'll do a less structured series of epilogues. Loosely related oneshots, that kinda vibe.
Also, my writing assistant stopped working in the middle of this, so if there's stupid typos I'll come fix them later.
I swear to fucking god if the taglist doesn't work I'll start breaking bones.

Random-Mailbox's Favorite Sailor Moon Fics - Week 33 - Friends
Tumblr media
Friendships are some of the most important things in any person's live. In some cases, friends become more important than our actual families to us. In these stories, we get to see these connections shine.
As always, my apologies in advance for spoiling some of these for you (Fic Titles are linked to either FFN or AO3 entries).
Sillage - @floraone
In this port Stars (anime) one shot, Mamoru who is thrown off by everything he seemingly missed while being gone, goes to see Rei to actively not ask what had happened when he wasn’t there. Rei though, being a great friend, fills in the silences and points a few important things out.
Would You Like To Date My Friend, Chiba Mamoru? - @floraone
Although Usagi found one Mamoru Chiba absolutely gorgeous, she managed to convince herself that Ami would be a much better fit for him, going out of her way to set up their date. In her end of chapter notes, @floraone mentioned that there was another part to this story - and I would absolutely love an epilogue of sorts, even if it is 3.5 years later.
Save the Hero - @my-crazy-awesome-socks
Usagi is struggling with some of the decisions she was about to make during her battle with Galaxia and cannot seem to shake the feelings of regret and fear. That is until she opens up to Motoki about what has been weighing on her the most.
Miraculous Musings: Vignettes of a Miracle Romance: Chapter 27: charm - @goddessalthena
Usagi's way of coping with the post-Galaxia world is making life challenging for Mamoru and her friends. Eventually Mamoru brings himself to ask why, convincing her that nothing needs to change when it comes to him at least.
Commencement - @goddessalthena
This was the first story I had thought of when coming up with this list. I absolutely love the thoughtfulness and the friendship between these two, which rarely gets the spotlight. To commemorate Makoto's graduation, Mamoru makes sure that she doesn't feel like he did during his.
Dreamweave -@ellorgast
In this one-shot, Mamoru tries to help his newly awakened Shittenou deal with their nightmares, at least one night, potentially misusing his Golden Crystal.
"Oh, Is He Your Brother?" - @riverlethe9
Usagi inadvertently gets pulled into a confession from another girl to Mamoru. Confessor then proceeds to treat Usagi like dirt, earning ire from both Motoki and Mamoru.
These Games We Play: Chapter 5: Treasure of the Moon - @allyunabridged
In this one shot, Usagi drags Rei out to a secluded beach on a hunch, searching for hidden treasure.

We want to make worlds that you feel like you are living in, that feel dynamic and filled with other characters. “It’s something that has stuck with us in every game we make, from GTA III through to GTA V, the Red Dead Redemption series, and everything else: we are focused on building worlds – and on making these worlds as believable, detailed, interesting, varied and alive as possible. "GTA III helped clarify our approach to making games,” says Aaron Garbut, Head of Development, Co-Studio Head at Rockstar North who has overseen the design of Rockstar’s open worlds since GTA III. Rockstar is also celebrating the 20th anniversary of the game that started it all – Grand Theft Auto III – by releasing commemorative in-game items in GTA Online that feature some of GTAIII’s most iconic weapons, such as the original baseball bat.

A Solitary Lughnasadh (Lammas) Celebration!
Hello again, sisters! As the sun’s shine fades and the days go shorter, the time has come to celebrate the beginning of the harvest season: Lunghasadh. Otherwise called Lammas, this pagan holiday commemorates the sun, the corn and the prosperity of the Earth. Like any other holiday, it is best celebrated with friends, family or a coven. But for all the broom-closeted witches out there, here are some ideas to celebrate Lammas alone or discreetly.
1: Make your own celebratory bread
2: Make a Sun King anointing oil
3: Have a picnic outside
4: Learn to weave or knit
5: Take a walk in a field
6: Have a corn roast, or a dinner outside
7: Burn Frankicense or Sandelwood incenses around the house
8: Hang summer flowers, corn dolls, sunflowers and cornucopia on doors, or in your room
9: Burn weat during your rituals
10: Drink blackberry wine, or another dark fruity beverage
11: Have yourself a nice slice of pie
12: Make a weat and oak wreath
Gods associated with Lammas: Bastet, Ceres, Demeter, Ishtar, Isis, Sif, Lungh, Alphito, Anat, Derridwen, Hater, Libera, Luna, Rhiannon, Adonis, Baal, Cernunnos, Dagon, Lahar, Liber, Neper, Osiris
Animals associated with Lammas: Roosters, cows, deers, hipogriffs, phoenixes, centaurs

12 Secrets of Dollar Store Employees
1. PAPER GOODS ARE THE BEST DEAL IN STORES.
You can discover essentially anything at dollar stores, including solidified nourishment (more on that in a minute), toys, and cleaning items. Collections can fluctuate broadly by store and by establishment, however as per Brenda, the store supervisor of a Dollar Tree in the Midwest, clients get the best arrangement staying with paper items. In any event, that is the thing that representatives purchase generally much of the time. “The things that my representatives and I buy at Dollar Tree for esteem would be tissue, paper towels, birthday cards, treats, inflatables, plastic product, paper plates, envelopes, stationary items, and the every day paper,” she says. At her store, bathroom tissue and the neighborhood paper are the top venders. While the previous is a quite clear need, papers at her area are commonly less expensive than in different stores; the Sunday release specifically is up to a few dollars less expensive. (Like a great deal of their stock, the chain likely gets a gigantic rebate for purchasing the papers in mass.)
2. THEY KNOW YOU WON’T BE IN THE STORE FOR TOO LONG.
Dollar stores ordinarily have little signage, couple of laces, and a little land impression (Dollar General’s is around 7300 square feet, or one-tenth the extent of a Walmart). However, having constrained space with effectively open things is by plan—the normal shopping trip for a Dollar General store is only 10 minutes. “Arranging the store around quick outings is one great approach to improve the quick experience numerous clients are searching for, while additionally keeping deals high by enabling clients to see numerous items,” says Hank, an associate Dollar Tree store director in Canada. Clients “will in general need to get in and out quick. They are regularly occupied and have different designs for the afternoon and would prefer not to invest an excessive amount of energy meandering the store.”
3. THEY WANT CUSTOMERS TO FEEL LIKE THEY’RE ON A TREASURE HUNT.
As per Moody’s, an income and credit examination firm, Dollar General pivots its stock all the time to make clients feel like they have to purchase things presently on the off chance that they’re not around later—sustaining what it calls a “treasure chase” feel. That enables the stores to contend with online retailers like Amazon, which regularly keeps up load of famous items and may not incite a similar feeling of earnestness in purchasers.
Dollar Tree’s methodology is somewhat extraordinary. While new stock arrives from providers, it’s not as often as possible. “When we are doing the truck we get truly energized when we see another item,” Brenda says. “We just observe perhaps 10 to 15 new things for each week out of 1500 things that are falling off of the truck, so when we get something new we quickly cut open the case and inspect it.”
4. THEY CATCH A LOT OF SHOPLIFTERS.
You can leave dollar stores with an armful of merchandise for $20, $10, or less, however that still doesn’t hinder individuals from swiping even the least expensive targets. “The shoplifting is incredibly wild,” Brenda says. “We get somebody pretty much consistently.”
Strangely, the cost may help encourage the robbery. “The thing with the low costs is that there is no genuine obstacle from individuals taking since none of the items have any security around them,” Brenda says.
5. THEY RECOMMEND YOU SKIP THE STEAK.
Looking for solidified nourishments at the rebate chains can be all in or all out. A few things may be OK: “I’ve had the little pie cuts, the wiener and flapjack nibbles, and the Cinnabon chomps are astonishing,” Brenda says. “The solidified meals are great too. Individuals likewise love the solidified vegetables and natural product.”
Be that as it may, with regards to natural sustenance, similar to meat or fish, you ought to likely consider a visit to the neighborhood food merchant. “I don’t eat any of the solidified fish or rib eyes since I don’t confide in solidified fish or meat that costs a dollar,” she says.
Nate, a Dollar Tree chief in Minnesota, concurs. “I could never purchase the steak,” he says. “I’ve gotten notification from more than one individual that it doesn’t cook [well] and it feels like elastic.” In 2016, TV member WCPO in Cincinnati endeavored a trial, presenting the four-ounce $1 ribeye alongside a butcher’s and grocery store sliced to some zone firemen. Among the reactions: “I get it was meat” and “It’s not awful.”
6. Different STORES USE THEM TO STOCK UP.
At the point when most everything is a dollar, it’s anything but difficult to perceive any reason why markdown chains wind up going about as a distribution center for neighborhood independent ventures. Hank says that he’s watched autonomous owners coming in to stock up on things. “There is limited who runs a comfort store and purchases boxes of chocolate bars and containers of soft drink,” he says. “We likewise get a lot of occasion coordinators purchasing supplies in mass, now and again many things at once.”
7. THEY DREAD THE SIGHT OF HOT WHEELS TOY CARS.
While many toys at dollar store areas are of suspect quality, there’s at any rate one piece of stock that causes a ton of energy in walkways. “We get a great deal of the notorious ‘Hot Wheels Hunters,’” Nate says, alluding to gatherers of the prominent bite the dust cast toy vehicle line from Mattel. “I surmise they scour the web and discover when stores are getting shipments. I’ve had individuals show up multi day after my 2000-piece truck [arrives] and request I go get the one box of Hot Wheels I got so they can be the first to get them.”
On the off chance that they’re amenable, Nate will attempt to oblige them. A portion of the more pleasant Hot Wheels fans even nominate themselves as true workers. “The one person that is an incessant guest will take the crates I have and stock them flawlessly on the racks while he searches for what he needs,” Nate says.
8. THEY SELL PREGNANCY TESTS. Furthermore, THEY’RE RELIABLE.
In case you’re careful about the exactness of a home pregnancy test pack that expenses $1, well, you likely ought to be. Be that as it may, as per Nate, his store stocks a solid brand. “The pregnancy tests we sell are similar ones utilized in many medical clinics,” he says. Most all pregnancy tests recognize a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin, or hCG, which is created during pregnancy. Progressively costly tests can identify lower levels prior in a pregnancy, while less expensive tests—like the ones in dollar stores—probably won’t enlist a positive until a lady is somewhat further along.
Be that as it may, they’re as yet compelling. What’s more, as indicated by Brenda and Nate, they’re likewise among the most-stolen things in their stores.
9. Inflatables KEEP THEM ALOFT.
Most Dollar Tree and numerous other dollar store areas have a counter dedicated to mylar inflatables planned for birthday parties and different occasions. That is on the grounds that the ease and simple stockpiling of the un-expanded inflatables makes them a truly gainful undertaking. “Inflatables complete a huge amount of business for Dollar Tree,” Brenda says. “A ton. Particularly for enormous occasions.”
In a given week, her store may pitch 150 to 200 inflatables: “Things being what they are, each day is somebody’s birthday, infant shower, graduation, or commemoration.”
10. THEY MIGHT WARN YOU AWAY FROM A BAD DEAL.
In case you’re going back and forth about whether a dollar buy is advantageous, you can generally ask a worker. They may let you know whether it merits the money. “I realize that the nature of our items isn’t generally the best and I clearly am not going to always bring this up to clients, however I am not reluctant to give them a touch of heads up when I realize a specific thing is particularly poor, or could be discovered a lot less expensive at a contender,” Hank says. “I realize that the organization will get by without those couple deals, and I like to satisfy clients over adding a couple of more dollars to the wallet of the organization.”
11. THE STORE MANAGER IS OFTEN OVERWORKED.
Dollar Tree, Dollar General, and different chains have experienced harsh criticism lately for entrusting store chiefs with a ton of duty so as to keep the expenses of staffing low. As per Nate, that looks at. “In my region they are preliminary running having the stores empty the semi-trucks rather than the drivers,” he says. “In any case, they won’t allow us the hours to include an additional person, which means I’m the supervisor on obligation while being in the back of a semi tossing 1800 cases.”
12. THEY CAN’T KEEP DONALD DUCK ON THE SHELVES.
In stores loaded up with a ton of new brands, clients like to see one conspicuous face: Donald Duck’s. The Disney character is up front on Dollar Tree’s squeezed orange, and his grinning bill is a standout amongst the most famous things in the stores. (The beverage is created by Citrus World, which possesses the Florida’s Natural mark and licenses the Donald symbolism and name from Disney.) “The Donald Duck squeezed orange is our third most-sold thing,” Brenda says. “Frankly, I don’t know why it’s so famous. Many individuals stop at our store while in transit to work or any place, so it’s sort of a snappy get.”

Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man (2014-2015) - Not with a Bang, but a whimper
Tumblr media
Post Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #19, Miles Morales’ written career as Spider-Man has not been great. After fridging one of the only central supporting female characters in his cast – Rio Morales, his mother – the state of the narrative became preoccupied with manpain, and framing the grief of a teenage boy as, in the words of Miles Morales, someone who “didn’t understand what it meant to be Spider-Man” (Ultimate Cataclysm: Spider-Man #1), which required his entire supporting cast to shame and emotionally manipulate him back into the job.
If there was any good that came out of the last five issues of UCSM, it was probably the introduction of Ultimate Cloak and Dagger and Ultimate Taskmaster.
Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man, unfortunately, offers very little in the way content improvement outside of one side story and its art direction. Otherwise, it doubles back in circles on subjects and issues that should’ve been laid to rest and ends on an inconclusive whimper.
Ultimate Spider-Man #200 + #Issues #1-7
Death in comic books means nothing, and holds no weight unless you’re a wildly unpopular (or non-white) character that any given publication is looking to get rid of in order to appease their narrow minded (and white) audience. When the Ultimate Marvel universe was created, one of the creeds it presumably lived by was that “death mattered”. When a character died, it would mean something, it would impact the narrative, and every character that died would remain dead.
It’s a shame, then, when they chose to stick their guns, they let Jeph Loeb decimate almost half of the Ultimate Universe’s roster in one of the uglier displays of wanton violence, sexism, and just plain shit writing, with the 2011 “Blockbuster Event” Ultimatum. Ultimatum more or less ensured, despite maintaining the promise that no one would return from the dead, none of the deaths mattered – a lot of it was just Loeb masturbating to his own cruelty if we’re being honest.
Tumblr media
With the “Death of Spider-Man”, Brian Michael Bendis added salt to an otherwise unhealed wound that was Ultimatum, which wasn’t even a year old at that point. To his credit, he made Peter Parker’s death matter – book ending it with the first villain that more or less was responsible for the creation of Spider-Man (Norman Osborn) – with reverberating consequences throughout most surviving series in the UM. Yet, following the introduction of Miles Morales – the new and Black Spider-Man (reportedly meant to honor Bendis’ Black children, whom I pity) – you could tell, in the years preceding the removal of Peter Parker as the protagonist of the Spider-Man title, Bendis was regretting his decision.
Tumblr media
After a 160 issue run (where Peter made actual appearances and was the protagonist until his death), the questionably numbered Ultimate Spider-Man #200, once again sees Bendis fantasizing about what he might’ve done had he not killed Peter Parker and replaced him with Miles Morales. Most of the original cast of characters that were central to Peter Parker’s story – plus Miles and Ganke – gather together at the Parker House at the behest of May Parker and Gwen Stacy (who appears to be a creep perving on underage teen boys no matter what), to commemorate the life of the late Peter Parker. Considering the previous three iterations of “Memorializing Peter Parker” in the UM, Ultimate Spider-Man #200 brings nothing new to the table, but should’ve been a red flag to anyone paying attention to the declining quality of Miles’ title.
Miles’ final title in the Ultimate Universe, Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man, begins with the reintroduction of a supposed-to-be-dead Norman Osborn – in the custody of S.H.I.E.L.D. – and two generic Spider-Man copycats robbing banks. There’s nothing really of note to say about the first seven issues of this thirteen issue title. Bendis decides, with the Ultimate Marvel universe doing the death rattle, to undo the death of both Osborn and Peter Parker – with Peter getting a half-assed excuse for his being brought back from the dead (to sum it up: “because reasons”).
Tumblr media
I don’t think a Spider-Man comic has made me quite as angry as this series has. In the moment I read the issue wherein Peter Parker tells Miles, “It’s time for the Original Spider-Man to get back into the game”, I could’ve torn the book into shreds and smote its ruins if I thought it was going to hurt Marvel’s sales and not be an even greater waste of my spent $3.99.
“I can’t believe we’re beating this dead horse again” was what I was thinking and I just stopped buying the book altogether. I think that the first step to mine ceasing to see Miles Morales as a legitimate character, but wasted potential in the hands of non-Black creatives. I only ended up reading the trades for the sake of reference and fact checking and it’s only this year, three-four years after the fact that I bothered to do that.  The only thing worth noting about the first seven issues of this title is that it sets up the last four, which are even worse.
Cataclysm: Ultimate Spider-Man #1-3 + Issues #8-9
Tumblr media
Cataclysm: Ultimate Spider-Man is one of seven miniseries titles part of the “Blockbuster Event” known as Cataclysm, which sees Ultimate Galactus (or 616 Galactus, I’m not sure which tbh. There’s very little difference between the two when you get to the nitty-gritty) attempting to destroy the 1610 universe and devour it all. You get the distinct feeling that, before someone came up with Secret Wars, Cataclysm was meant to be the true end of the Ultimate Universe – but someone upstairs changed their mind and rendered it to a mere false start. Long story short: The grand majority – if not all of – the Ultimates (the Avengers of the 1610 universe) are killed or sent into the void with Galactus by Ultimate Shadowcat – who is later hailed savior of the world. The All-New Ultimates are formed.
Das it.
But, within Miles’ slice of the Cataclysm story, Bendis finally decides to focus on the elephant in the room: Jefferson Davis and his open and his fantasy xenophobia toward superhumans and how it has literally silenced his own son from admitting to his double life as Spider-Man. Moreso since the death of his mother, Rio Morales, at the hands of Ultimate Venom. I’ll be perfectly honest – I don’t think Jefferson Davis is a great guy – I actually ended up liking his no-account brother (Aaron Davis, gone too soon) far more because he was upfront about his ideals and his mission statement. He never pretended or tried to be a better person. He was just rotten and enjoyed it.
For that one piece of sage advice Jefferson offered Miles in the earliest tenure of his first title, Jefferson is the perfect example of a man who expects his son to “do as he says, and as I do”, but expects no consequences visited upon him whenever he dehumanizes people. He’s a walking metaphor for the heterosexual Black father who spews homophobic slurs in casual conversation around their gay daughter or son and I’m sure as hell that was intentional despite the incompatibility of the allegory.
Tumblr media
Cataclysm: Ultimate Spider-Man doesn’t do much to repair his character, if anything it makes him thrice times worse. When Galactus starts wrecking all of New York City and Brooklyn, Miles, Bombshell (Lana Baumgartner) and Cloak and Dagger, struggle to save the people caught in the monster’s wake – all while recounting where they were when the Ultimatum event occurred.
In Miles’ flashback, we see Jefferson lose his head over the knowledge that the title wave was caused by a mutant (Magneto), all while loudly proclaiming everyone stuck in traffic was going to die. The most important nugget of information taken away from Miles’ flashback is the knowledge that his father more or less promised that he would abandon or disown Miles if he ever found out his son (then, probably only 11 or 12 years old at the time) was a superhuman.
I never had much sympathy for Davis (I tolerated him because of Rio), but the moment Miles tries to convince his father to come with him out of the city to safety, and Jefferson decides to blame a now fourteen year old Miles for the death of Rio and Aaron, I just outright hated him. Cataclysm: Ultimate Spider-Man is not a bad read all things considered. It tells its story concisely and never loses focus of its characters in relation to the catastrophe. The downside is that you have to read the rest of the Cataclysm series to know what was going on. I’d probably recommend you read it, especially since it ties into two issues of The Ultimate Spider-Man.
Tumblr media
The conflict between Miles and Jefferson is left hanging until issues #8 and #9 of Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man – also known as “The Only Redeeming Thing About This Comic Book Title”. The eighth and ninth issues of MMTUSM sees Jefferson Davis finally owning up to his past and basically just spilling the beans about his life as a criminal with Aaron and how he became involved with S.H.I.E.L.D. during the 80s – when Miami Vice, Jerri Curls, House Party Flattops, and ill-fitting suits with shoulder pads were all the rage – and how he met a young, already-at-it, Nick Fury.
The complete tonal and visual shift in the issues are a welcome respite from the Peter Parker nonsense of the previous seven. The story arc, “Miles Morales: An Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.?”, carries with it the kind’ve of visual flair I see a Tim Sale illustrated graphic novel (like Spider-Man: Blue or The Long Halloween), but it’s still David Marquez illustrating the story from beginning to end.
Tumblr media
It’s got the look and feel of a pulp novel, or one of those old newspaper comic strips where the spots of the print were obvious through the inking and character sketches. The narrative, which sees Jefferson and Aaron working for smalltime criminals to Jefferson’s eventual graduation to protecting the Kingpin (with a minor explanation as to why he loathes mutants), is, in my opinion, the highlight of a story that could’ve worked as a full-fledged miniseries about the Jefferson brothers.
My only quibble with the framing of the narrative is that the early inclusion of S.H.I.E.L.D makes Jefferson look more like the unwilling participant of crime he was manipulated into thinking he had to do for “the greater good”, as opposed to some young blood who didn’t give much thought to right or wrong (which is how the early issues framed it) before he had an epiphany. I always assumed the crime came first, then S.H.I.E.L.D, then Rio. Honestly, if you’re at all interested in this storyline, just look for the single issues and don’t buy the trade. You’ll be doing yourself a favor.
#Issues 10-13
Tumblr media
Marvel and its twisted, present-day romantic relationship with Neo-Nazism is a fairly ironic one, given most of its early artists were white Jewish dudes with alternate names designed to explicitly hide their Jewishness on account of antisemitism. But, I suppose the publications preoccupation with Nazism to begin with (even if it was denouncing it) would’ve inevitably steered its future publishers to romanticize it in the end. I mean, that’s what happened after all.
You know shit it bad when Marvel wants you to pity [white] characters like Grant Ward of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D for joining a Neo-Nazi group, despite the repeated and angry affirmations of protagonist Daisy Johnson, who flat-out reminds the audience, “You are a Nazi if you join Hydra”, who is undermined anyway by the narrative that continues to bleat, “pity the Neo-Nazi.”
Brian Michael Bendis, in all his infinite lack of wisdom, decides – the biggest way to differ Miles Morales’ love life from Peter Parker’s, is make an underdeveloped character, his girlfriend, Ultimate Kate Bishop, a member of Hydra. Miles’ white girlfriend rides on the agenda of the Aryan Ideal and white supremacy. Brilliant.
Tumblr media
The Ultimate Spider-Man issues, #1-#4 and #7 prelude the last four issues with Miles deliberating whether or not he should tell Katie Bishop about his double life as Spider-Man. Instead of being supportive, everyone from Ganke to Cloak and Dagger warns Miles against telling her, thinking it would be a bad idea. He does it anyway, Katie panics and runs away.
The aforementioned issues give the reader a glimpse into Kate’s life with the Bishops, with one conversation with her older sister casually mentioning that “they” would have to kill Miles and the seventh issue concludes with her uttering the phrase, “Hail Hydra.”
If The Ultimate Spider-Man had something to say about the issue of Nazism, especially in relation to Miles’ life as a Black teen – or the cautionary tale of “you never know someone until…”, then I could maybe understand the decision to make Kate Bishop (a wildly popular Avenger in the 616 universe, be she an adult or a teenager) a Nazi.
Tumblr media
But, it doesn’t, it basically does exactly the same thing Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D does with the Daisy Johnson/Grant Ward dynamic. The narrative depicts a “Sympathetic Nazi” (Katie) trying to explain their position, and a furious significant other (Miles) outright declaring their relationship is over. Only, where AOS more or less dragged that subplot out to its natural conclusion (“Sympathetic Nazi” isn’t really sympathetic and dies),
The Ultimate Spider-Man did nothing to that extent. Readers barely have gotten to known Katie Bishop since her introduction in issue #23 of UCSM. She was given no time actually to be anything other than “Miles Morales’ girlfriend”. And when it comes right down to it, the Hydra subplot was nothing but an excuse to bring Dr. Doom into the narrative at the last moment. So, the “My Girlfriend is a Nazi” storyline just falls flat.
On a smaller note, the way the last couple issues decide to use Judge – the minor character from Ultimate Comics Spider-Man – is sigh inducing. It’s like Bendis realized his book was coming to an end and figured the best way to a handle a character that barely had any face time since the first twelve issues of the UCSM, is to just plop him in the middle of the story with his already knowing Miles is Spider-Man.
Tumblr media
But, he does it in a way that, if you removed him from the story, nothing would change. It’s a superfluous addition and kind’ve discourteous, especially since Bendis doesn’t do anything with Judge later on in Miles’ new 616 title, the unfortunately named Spider-Man.
Outside of issues #8 and #9, Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man is a sad conclusion to Miles Ultimate Universe solo-title career. It reminded me why I stopped reading his title four years ago, and knowing that none of his recent stuff isn’t any good either kinda makes me glad I made the decision so early on.

"What the hell am I doing? I’ll tell you. I'm here, and in the moment I've lived for."
-          Joe, Megalo Box (ep. 13)
The Toonami Trending Rundown for March 23-24, 2019. Megalobox ends its run with a bang as Joe and Yuri have their highly anticipated rematch at the Megalonia finals. Meanwhile, the League of Villains begin their surprise assault at the UA’s hidden campsite, Asuna learns about the Soul Translator and the Underworld as Kirito recovers from his injuries, and Meruem wishes to spend his last moments with Komugi, among other great moments.
On Twitter, Boruto and every show from Sword Art Online to Shippuden on the schedule would successfully trend in the US. #MyHeroAcademia and #SwordArtOnlineAlicization would also trend alongside these shows, but not outright.
Several character trends were also spotted from JoJo’s, Black Clover, and Hunter x Hunter, with Josuke and Rohan (As Josuke somehow cheats his way into winning a dice game), Asta (as Ladros gets back up and proceeds to pummel everyone, forcing Asta to unlock a hidden power), and Meruem (as he spends his last moments with Komugi before both succumbing to the radiation).
On Tumblr, #Toonami would trend alongside #BNHA and #Hunter x Hunter. The full list including statistics and tweet counts from the twitter app and Amr Rahmy’s Fan Screening analytics app can be seen below.

Following the success of My Hero Academia: The Two Heroes in theaters, Studio Bones and Toho Animation have announced that a second film of the hit franchise is in the works, scheduled to premiere sometime in Winter 2020. Funimation has yet to reveal plans for a theatrical release this side of the Pacific at this time.
Netflix has announced that they will be putting up the original Evangelion series up on their streaming service on June 21. Unfortunately, it has been revealed that Netflix will be doing a completely new re-dub with a new cast as Amanda Win-Lee, the show’s original ADR Director and voice of Rei, has revealed that she and the original crew will not be invited back by Netflix to reprise their roles.
Toonami creators Jason DeMarco and Gill Austin recently talked with our friend and media partner Joshua Mathieu (@jmb70056) from Toonami Squad, including how Toonami will remain competitive in this golden age of streaming, its new partnership with Crunchyroll, and the 30th anniversary of DBZ, among other things. Check it out by clicking here.

Sports anime has historically been a tough sell for the Western anime fandom. During the mid-2000’s, Toonami saw IGPX and the Prince of Tennis stumbling and Slam Dunk and Eyeshield 21 ended up pretty much DOA. While the sports genre of anime has seen a resurgence this decade thanks to the likes of Free, Yuri on Ice, and Haikyu, due to the previously mentioned shows’ focusing more on the slice of life aspects rather than the action, it perhaps came as no surprise that Toonami wasn’t really interested, and thus a sports anime joining the better cartoon show in the modern era remained elusive. That was, until Megalo Box came.
A show created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Ashita no Joe, this futuristic reinvisioning of the classic manga and anime in Megalo Box was a notable hit and fan favorite among Crunchyroll viewers during the spring 2018 season with its acclaimed music, animation, and story among other things. The series would become one of the most requested anime to eventually air on Toonami, especially when Viz announced that they had licensed and were producing a dub at Anime Expo, and I think it’s safe to say the requests were heard loud and clear by Toonami and Viz. During New York Comic Con, Viz had announced that Megalo Box would make its debut on the better cartoon show on December 8, and the rest is history.
13 weeks of Joe’s quest to reach the top, and Megalo Box’s run is in the books. During the show’s run, the show successfully trended on Twitter in the US every single Saturday it had aired during its 13 week run, and included a character trend in Mikio during week 9. The show also showed up in the top 30 Amr Rahmy’s Fan Screening app during all 13 weeks.
Tumblr media
Whether we will see more of Joe’s story in the future is hard to say, but overall Megalo Box overall was an enjoyable ride and it was great to see Toonami commemorate the golden anniversary of this historic franchise. Thanks for the memories.

Due to the glitch that preempted SAO last week, and with the next acquisition apparently not ready to go just yet, SAO will premiere both Episodes 7 and 8 from 12:30 to 1:30am ET. In addition, we’ll also see the conclusion of Hunter x Hunter’s Chimera Ant arc, while Boruto begins the School Trip arc, and Naruto begins The Taming of Nine-Tails and Fateful Encounters arc, among other moments. Until then, see you again next week as always.

Lake Oberhorn Loop
Tumblr media
Date of hike: July 11, 2021
Country: Switzerland
Region: Bernese Oberland
Trailhead: Stechelberg
Hike Destination: Lake Oberhorn
Distance: 13 miles (20 km) loop trail
Elevation gain: 4,200 ft. (ca. 1250 m.)
Difficulty: Moderate to challenging
It was a glorious day with all the meteorological and other conditions aligning perfectly to make for an unforgettable trip to Lake Oberhorn, one of my favorite hikes in the entire world; and yet it was also a day that could have turned out to be a disaster. But more about that later.
Together with my sister, Anki, we started to hike from the trail head in Stechelberg at 9:45 am. We proceeded under an expanse of cobalt blue sky, against a backdrop of cloud flecked mountains wearing a thin coat of newly fallen snow. Long rolls of white clouds clung about to the blanks of the Jungfrau and the Mittagshorn, and toward the end of the valley, a somber cloud cap sat atop the cliffs. The Schmadri falls were gushing full-fed, fanning out over the cliff to the east, and the emerald green weadows were dotted with a myriad differently colored wildflowers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was an outright joy to step into such a wondrous, beautiful landscape. An hour into the hike, we had ascended halfway up to the Tschingelhorn Lodge, the rustic place where Bernard’s family used to spend their summer holidays some 50 years ago. At this point, the steep switch-backs left the forest and zig-zagged up an open meadow looking out over the valley. Stopping beside a rustic alp hut, we admired the view of the eastern slopes of Jungrau, taking a few photos, posing in front of the gorgeous panorama.
Tumblr media
We arrived at the Tschingelhorn Hotel shortly before noon. I showed Liang some of the local features like the stone maze where we used to play around for days as children, and I recalled how simple and rustic the place used to be, but how charming, a charm that had not entirely faded, long after the mules that used to carry supplies up here had been replaced by a modern cargo cable car.
We sat down to consume a drink--Rivella, the quintessential Swiss soft drink—and Bernard could not resist the temptation to order a slice of the extraordinarily thick apricot pie that was placed on a table outside, under a protective cover. It was such an amazingly tasty, fluffy, and juicy production from out of the mountain oven that Bernard was tempted to order a second slice, but then the wisdom prevailed that one should stop eating just when something tastes most deliciously.
We briefly chatted with the current owners of the lodge, who had just purchased the property less than a year ago and were running it for their first season. The place was completely sold out for the weekend, and as testimony to this, numerous bedsheets were fluttering on drying racks in the fresh mountain breeze. No electrical tumbler was needed here.
Tumblr media
After this pleasant break, we continued to hike on the roughly horizontal portion of the trail between the two mountain lodges--Tschingelkorn and Oberhorn-- which used to be run by brothers, but now only the second lodge “Obersteinberg” was still owned by the same family that had the business 50 years ago; the second place looked more weatherbeaten and unimproved, having escaped the kind of gentle renovative modernization that the Tschingelhorn had undergone after it changed hands.
Beyond the Oberhorn lodge, the path skirts a steep slope, and here we encountered our first minor obstacles: There was a big cow walking on the narrow hiking path straight toward us. Liang and I opted to make room, trying to skirt the enormous, horned animal by making a detour above it. I have read too many news articles about cows trampling hikers, even killing some. But Anki would not take the easy way out and walked right up to the animal and talked to it in soothing tones, eventually even patting its broad snout, until the matriarch reluctantly made room.
Tumblr media
Then, we approached the narrow passage where several years ago Lyra had burst into tears at the prospect of traversing a washed-out section of the trail. This stretch of the path had been liable to erosion ever since I can remember, and we entered the passage cautiously. Right then, a woman approached from the opposite side and since we had already started on the critical portion, we assumed that she’d step aside and let us pass. Instead, she powered on and basically walked right into us, shouldering Liang aside while muttering something under her breath, then she bulldozed into Anki who was literally forced to retreat backward to make way for the bullheaded woman. This inconsiderate behavior slightly clipped my mood, but only momentarily. My thinking turned to pitying this person, whose rude demeanor must make it  hard for her to go through life, creating animosity left and right.
The bridge at the end of the steep passage was so deeply buried by a large snowfield that it was completely invisible—the snow had formed its own bridge over the bridge.
Tumblr media
From here, the scenery becomes wilder and wilder by the minute, with the flowers doing all in their power to keep up with the heightened scenic appeal. The alpenrosen, gentian, buttercups, Arnica and many other types of wild flowers were competing to trump one another with their colorful displays.
Tumblr media
We reached the foot of the last steep climb before the lake at around 1:30 pm, and since it was already quite late for lunch, instead of pushing on, we looked for a spot with a view of the valley and there refreshed ourselves. The weather kept up its amazing display of pure blue sky, cloud banks clinging to the slopes, thus creating dramatic and ever-changing vistas. On the way up to the lake, Anki and I busily gathered wild flowers which we formed into little bouquets. We were going to retrieve the keepsake from Loni, which Bernard had deposited at the lake some six years ago, making a little memorial.
At 2:30 pm, huffing and puffing from the exertion, we finally arrived at the lake, a shimmering, reflective turquoise pool.
Tumblr media
The scenic aspect could not be improved upon, and in every direction the lake had a different aspect and backdrop. The lake is known for hardcore swimming--it is supposed to be the ultimate test to prove one’s Swiss hardiness to swim across; but while we were there, nobody was in the mood, although some hikers dipped their feet in the frigid water, foregoing the pleasure.
We marveled at the gorgeous scenery for a few minutes then proceeded to the spot where the keepsake was hidden—a pendant in the shape of a cross that Loni had worn many years. Bernard located the little plastic bag with the pendant without the slightest trouble, and together with Anki they had a nice commemorative moment. This spot had always had a very special meaning for Loni, who loved to come here.
Tumblr media
Anki was trying to locate the knitted butterfly from Pat’s funeral that she had suspended in a crack in the same large rock, but her search was ultimately futile—the piece of fabric must have disintegrated or been torn away by the wind. Afterwards, we had another mini-picnic, munching some sweets and rehydrating ourselves, keeping a close eye on the ever diminishing water supply.
At 3:10, we packed up and started on the return journey. At the “Wegweiser” (directional sign), I explained that there were two routes that we could take: either the one that leads back the way we had just come from for a stretch before dropping down steeply along the roaring stream toward the bottom of the valley; or, alternatively, we could follow the longer route (longer by 30 minutes) that skirts the other side of the valley, thus creating a real loop, while descending more evenly and gently. I had been here a few times and knew the different routes. After a short debate, I persuaded the other two to take the longer and, per my recollection, more scenic route.
We followed the stream issuing from the lake for about a kilometer, making for a leisurely way along a lush meadow. At the end of this mild stretch of path, we arrived at another fork in the road. Again, I explained that from here one path descended steeply to the valley bottom while the other one followed a curving line at a milder grade. Liang tended toward taking the shorter route through the center of the valley, while I favored the longer, less popular route. And when Anki indicated that she’d rather be curious to try the longer route, which she’d never done before, we swiftly crossed the stream on a narrow board and continued to the right.
Tumblr media
About a half mile later, the path started to switch-back steeply upward. This gave Liang pause, and she questioned me why the path ascended again, when I’d assured everyone that it only want downward from here on. I was stomped by this turn of events...I had flat forgotten the renewed climb. Although shaken in my confidence, I reassured Liang that the uphill stretch wouldn’t be very long. But that, too, turned out to be misleading, as the path--to my intense embarassment--kept climbing and climbing. At this point, we had been hiking for six hours, going up more than 1000 meters, and here we were climbing yet another steep wall that Bernard had not warned his fellow hikers about. After about twenty minutes of huffing and puffing upward, we met two hikers coming from the opposite direction, and Bernard inquired of them whether we were approaching the top of the climb. Yes, the climbers, said, it was leveling off from here and then, the rest of the descent would be “gäbig,” i.e. easy going.
When we finally emerged on top of the ridge, an Alpine panorama of breathtaking beauty opened up before us. There were the grey tinted glacial waters of the Schmadri stream rushing down, the peaks of Breithorn, Mittagshorn, and Tschingelhorn were right in front of us, and glaciers and cloud shreds flecked the canvas of blue sky and grey rock.
Tumblr media
It was totally amazing, but looking down into the valley, some 1,250 meters below us and still about 6 miles away, I began to have an intense anxiety that we might be in trouble. This was so much higher and further from the trail head in Stechelberg than I had anticipated that I was afraid we might be totally exhausted by the time we got there. Also, now I was aware that the portion of the trail we were facing was anything but “gäbig”—it rather promised to be extremely steep and rocky. With these troubling thoughts going through my mind and Liang being in a rather somber mood by now, we started our descent under a figurative if not literal cloud. I made sure to take Liang’s hand whenever the narrow trail allowed for it because now we started down a severley steep, rocky slope that took the wind out of us. For long stretches, the trail resembled a stream rather than a walking path, as water from last night’s rainfall was rushing down into the valley, and this made for very unpleasant hiking.
After about 40 minutes of struggling down this narrow, rocky, twisting path, we decided to take a breather and rest a little. Liang had just exhaustedly plunked herself down on a flat rock, when she shot up with a shout: nettles! She’d put her legs in a bed of stinging nettles, and now in addition to being thirsty, tired, achy, and unhappy, she had her legs full of nettle spikes. Fortunately, I had a first-aid kit in my backpack and could offer some insect repellent wipes that did take some of the sting out. At this point, I felt truly sorry for the trouble caused by my shaky memory and unwise guiding. Anki, too, was exhausted: not only did she carry a hefty backpack, but she did not have hiking poles, like we did.
A few minutes later, we continued down the path, and then came the moment that could have turned this beautiful day into a nightmare: Approaching a sketchy stretch flanked by a deep gully, Bernard half turned around to give Liang a hand, but she thought she could manage by herself. As soon as Bernard turned to face forward again, he heard a sharp cry behind him and from the corner of his eye apprehended a tilting movement. He whirled around with lightning speed, just in time to lunch himself at Liang who was falling. She had stepped on a tuft of vegetation at the edge of the trail thinking that it was a clump of turf, but it was only some leaves with nothing to support it. I tackled Liang to the ground, the only method to stop a fall on steep ground, and together we slithered a little further toward the cliff but soon came to a rest clinging to each other. Anki, meanwhile had been tying her shoelaces when she heard a scream and then saw both of us disappear from her field of vision. She hurriedly hobbled along, her shoelaces still untied, to find me with my arms wrapped around Liang, on the ground. The first words out of Anki’s mouth were “Wow, I think Bernard just saved your life.” And I may well have. What is certain is that Liang would have had a worse fall without my intervention, and if she’d started to roll or tumble… Better not to follow that thought to its conclusion.
Tumblr media
In any case, we proceeded very cautiously from here on down, descending the twisting, narrow path slowly and methodically. It took us another two hours to get to the Inn at Trachsellauenen, and here we sank unto the benches completely exhausted. But no degree of exhaustion exists that a cold beer cannot help with, and soon we were sipping a Feldschlössli while our spirits slowly revived. We still had some 2-3 miles to go before we’d reach our car, but a one-lane gravel road had been laid up to this Berghotel, and it was decided that I would leave my backpack behind and hike down to the car, then drive back up to pick up Liang and Anki.
Before heading down the path, I inquired among the hotel staff whether they knew of anybody driving down to Stechelberg, but the answer was “nobody’s driving down tonight.” A few minutes later, on the hiking path downhill, I heard the hum of an engine, and luckily the trail here intersected with the gravel road here. Seconds later, I extended my thumb, hitching a ride. The folks in the car were happy to pick me up. They were Germans who repeatedly came to this valley to hike. I meet at least one of these lifelong fans of the Lauterbrunnen Valley every time I’m here. Turns out, this German couple had done exactly the same route that we had followed, except in reverse order, going up the steep, twisty path that had almost become the site of a tragic accident, and then descending on the other side, where we had gone up. We should have crossed their path since they arrived at the Oberhorn lake an hour after us, at 4 pm, but since they made a side-trip to the Schmadri hut, we had just missed each other. Also, the man did actually swim across the lake, although he said it was quite terrible, so cold as to be almost unbearable.
The lift down to Stechelberg shortened the time of my trip considerably, and to the amazement of Liang and Anki who were still sipping their drinks, I pulled into the parking lot a short time afterward. It had been an absolutely spectacular day, but one with a big cloud that could have caused a massive downpour of grief. We gave thanks to all the good guardian angels who had stood by Liang and me at the critical moment. We cannot be thankful enough to escape harm when going to the limit, especially in the mountains. Safety cannot be taken for granted, and a more mindful procedure would have eliminated the chance of serious harm. Now, both Liang and I have had one near-death experience while hiking: I in Siguniang and Liang in the Lauterbrunnental. We cannot risk racking up more of these chances.

Education summit offers test of Boris Johnson’s ‘diplomatic muscle’ after aid cuts #ٹاپسٹوریز

Education summit offers test of Boris Johnson’s ‘diplomatic muscle’ after aid cuts
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Boris Johnson’s cuts to international aid look set to undermine his efforts to secure pledges of $5billion for education in the developing world at an international summit being chaired by the UK this week, campaigners have warned.
There are fears that the recent Commons vote to indefinitely extend the cut – from the United Nations target of 0.7 per cent to 0.5 per cent of GDP – has hit the UK’s “diplomatic muscle” said the development movement One.
The campaign’s UK advocacy head Lis Wallace told The Independent that Mr Johnson was on track to fall as much as $1bn short of the money needed to fund the Global Partnership for Education over the coming five years, putting learning for 175m boys and girls at risk.
She said that failure to hit the target at the London summit on Thursday would amount to a judgement on the UK’s decision to slice £4bn a year from its aid budget in response to the financial crisis caused by the Covid pandemic.
And she warned that, coming after a G7 summit in Cornwall which fell short of expectations, missing the target would set a bad precedent for Mr Johnson’s most high-profile foray onto the international stage this year, when he hosts the UN COP26 climate change conference in Glasgow in November.
“When a government hosts these moments there are expectations,” said Ms Wallace. “We look to them to set the bar, to step up and ask other governments to match that kind of level of ambition.
“It’s a big test of our diplomatic muscle as a country. And it’s happening in the context of the aid cuts and in the context of a parliamentary vote which makes the cuts semi-permanent. That does send a signal to other countries – at the very time that we’re asking them to step up, it looks like we’re stepping back.”

Polling for One suggested that failure at an international summit would reflect badly on Mr Johnson, with 65 per cent saying that having volunteered to host the gathering, it is his personal responsibility to ensure it succeeds, against just 7 per cent who disagreed.
A majority (61 per cent) said Britain was at its best when it shows it is serious about tackling global issues and plays a leading role in tackling the world’s problems.
And more than half (54 per cent) agreed that other countries were more likely to make big commitments at a summit hosted by the UK if Britain itself sets an example.
Mr Johnson’s pledge of £430m for the Global Partnership for Education, announced at the G7 summit, fell short of the £600m sought by some civil society organisations.
It formed part of an overall promise of at least $2.75bn agreed by G7 leaders in Cornwall, also including €700m from the EU, leaving a further $2.25bn to be raised from non-G7 donors, likely to include Australia, China and Scandinavian countries.
Some 68 per cent of those questioned in the poll agreed there was a “moral obligation” on richer countries to ensure every child receives a good education, against just 9 per cent who disagreed. And 53 per cent rejected the idea that it does not matter whether children in poorer countries get a good education or not, against 23 per cent who agreed.
Ms Wallace said: “As an organisation, we were disappointed at the outcome of the G7, which did not come up with a plan to end the Covid pandemic and made commitments to share vaccines which were too little, too late. It looks like we are going to miss the mark at the global education summit, and that doesn’t bode well for COP.
“It seems that, when it comes to our diplomatic efforts, the aid cuts mean we have one hand, if not both hands, tied behind our back when we are asking others to put money in.”
But a Foreign Office spokesperson said: “The target of $5bn has always been a five-year target. At the last Global Partnership for Education replenishment summit in 2018 around 80 per cent of the funding was raised at the summit itself, with the rest coming in across the lifetime of the replenishment period.
“The UK is the largest bilateral donor to the replenishment. We have committed £430m towards the Global Partnership for Education’s replenishment ahead of the Global Education Summit in London later this week. This is our highest ever pledge, with an uplift of 15 per cent.”

Honjitsu no Kami Oroshi Ch. 1
New series I’ve decided to translate on a whim. I’ll be playing catch-up as the 3rd chapter comes out tomorrow, but this series will be translated on a more relaxed schedule when I do get caught up, prob within 1-2 weeks of the release. This won’t affect my Mononokean translations, so no worries.
Honjitsu no Kami Oroshi (or, “Today’s Divine Revelation,” as I’ve decided to translate it) is a slice of life-y/cooking manga by Yata Midori that just started serialization in Gangan Online last month. In it, established author Takatsuki Ryuunosuke hires his younger brother, Rintarou, to cook menus inspired by literary works in order to spark his ideas!
You can read the first chapter at http://www.ganganonline.com/contents/honzitsu/ by clicking “[1話] 赤毛のアン“  in the chapter listing!
Today's Divine Revelation Chapter 1 – Anne of Green Gables
Page 1
[Raspberry cordial, two types of cookies, fruit and nut pound cake,]
[A layer cake, and cherry pie.]
[This is
The divine revelation menu for entering the world of "Anne of Green Gables."]
Page 4
Ryuunosuke: Haa...
No ideas are coming to me...
Ryuu: How...
Ryuu: Many days ago did I last leave the house, again...?
Page 5
Woman: Eh?
You ended up firing that kid?
Man: No...
When I told him, "You should serve customers with more of a smile," he told me he couldn't...
Man: He said, "If it's going to be an issue, I'll quit."
Woman2: How inflexible!!!
Woman: He always had a sour look on his face, didn't he.
High school students should act more carefree.
Woman2: But, he was such a diligent worker. It's a shame.
What was his name again... Takasugi-kun?
Man: Takatsuki.
Page 6
Man: Takatsuki Rintarou-kun.
[This job wasn't any good either...]
Rintarou: (I thought I'd be able to manage if it was a bookstore...
Well...)
Rin: (The bookstore worker...
Said it was part of customer service. [But it's impossible])
Ryuu: Wha?
Page 7
Ryuu: What, now?
You ended up fired at another job!?
Rin: That's bad manners, Ryuunosuke.
Don't stand up while we're having a meal.
And don't point your chopsticks at people.
Rin: Lastly, a grain of rice! It's stuck to your face.
Ryuu: Ah, sorry.
Ryuu: ...That said, you shouldn't just call me by my name like that. I'm still your big brother, you know.
Rin: I didn't technically get fired.
Rin: I wasn't able to fulfill my employer's demands, so I quit.
Ryuu: Demands?
Rin: .......
Rin: A smile.
Page 8
Ryuu: (Bahaha!) That...
Ryuu: That was the demand...!?
Rin: ...
Ryuu: You can at least smile, can't you!?
Rin: Impossible.
I can't give one of those fake smiles.
But... Selfishly saying "I can't" at work is also unforgivable.
Rin: Therefore, I quit.
It was totally logical!!
Ryuu: How strict!!!
Ryuu: You're so strict, or should I say stubborn!
Ryuu: Are you really my younger brother...?
Ryuu: In the first place, why did you suddenly start looking for a part-time job?
Page 9
Rin:......
No real reason.
Rin: I just thought I should earn my own spending money since I'm a high school student, now.
Rin: Unlike my older bro, who's a shut-in with no talent for normal work.
Ryuu: !
Ryuu: Hey, hold up.
Ryuu: You know I'm a novelist!
Since my workplace is at home, it's not like I'm shutting myself in!
Rin: How many days has it been since you left the house?
Ryuu: If you're gonna say it like that...
Ryuu: Two weeks...?
Rin: Then you're a real shut-in, aren't you!?
Go outside a little! Don't you know your legs are gonna degenerate!?
Ryuu: No way!!
If there's nothing I have to do, there's no way I'm leaving the house!
Page 10
Ryuu: I hate the cold and stifling feeling of the outside world.
Society is overflowing with facades and fabrications.
Ryuu: Unending desires in transient abundance, false love...
The state of all those things wounds my heart.
Ryuu: That's why I've decided...
"I'll do my best not to leave the house."
Rin: Are you a hermit?
Ryuu: I have no discomfort. For I have the wings called "imagination"!
With these wings, I can go anywhere.
Rin: There's no helping you, huh.
Page 11
Rin: (Sigh...) Hey, bro...
It's a really good thing you found your current work as an author.
Ryuu: It's my calling!
I think... it's my calling, but...
Ryuu: ........
Recently, I've been in a little slump...
Ryuu: "A short story commemorating the 10 years since my debut."
Ryuu: Is the story I'm doing, but...
I'm not getting any good ideas.
Rin: They've dried up, huh? (All of them).
Ryuu: Haa... How nice...
Unlike me, the apple blossoms are in full bloom...
Rin: Don't get jealous of a tree.
Ryuu: Whenever the apple tree blooms, it reminds me of Anne of Green Gables...
Rin: Green Gables? What's that?
Page 12
Ryuu: "Anne of Green Gables" is a Canadian coming-of-age story about an orphan with red hair named Anne Shirley.
Ryuu: The highly imaginative protagonist Anne causes a stir with all sorts of incidents.
Ryuu: Friendship, family, and the old-fashioned daily life are all vibrantly written about in that masterpiece.
Ryuu: In the start of the series, before Anne is adopted, when she heads toward the "Green Gables"...
Ryuu: She passes through the rows of dreamily beautiful apple trees...
Ryuu: I really love that scene...
Ryuu: Ahh...
Ryuu: I want to visit Anne's world.
Page 13
Ryuu: If I could visit that world, if I could meet with Anne and happily chat with her...
Ryuu: I might get a revelation from god...
Rin: Why don't you go?
Ryuu: Eh...?
Rin: You have wings called imagination, don't you?
Then, why not go visit? Canada.
Why not visit that world?
Rin: In your head.
Ryuu: !
Ah...
Page 14
Ryuu: That's right! You're totally right, Rintarou!
Hey, why don't you do some work here at my place?
Rin: Wha? Work here?!
Ryuu: Yeah! See, your cooking's good, right?
Rin: Cooking...?
I mean, I can do a certain amount, but...
Ryuu: In Anne's story, all sorts of delicious food shows up.
Please let me have a taste of that moment's joy! While sitting in the comfort of my own home.
Rin: ...?
In your own home?
Ryuu: Yes! The title is!!
Ryuu: Under the Apple Tree!
Rin: !
Ryuu: A wonderful picnic that will take us to the world of Anne of Green Gables!!
Page 15
Rin: ....
Rin: Ehh...?!
Rin: Eh?
(An unforeseen development)
Ryuu: How about it?
Ryuu: One thousand yen an hour!!
Rin: ........
.....
Rin: Are...
Rin: Are you serious...
Girl1: Hey...
Takatsuki-kun is acting weird today, isn't he?
Girl2: Weird?
...He's eating lunch alone while reading, just like always.
Girl1: No, not that.
The book he's reading is what's weird! Look!
Page 16
Girls: A..
Anne of Green Gables...!!!
(Girl1: And with such a scary expression...)
Rin: (It's not like...)
Rin: (I want money so bad I need it from Aniki...)
(But, if I say "I can't" to everything...
I'll become a person that can't do anything.)
Rin: (Above all...)
Page 17
(When he was my age,)
(Aniki had already become an author.)
Rin: (I have to do something, too!!!)
Rin: Uhhh...
Two kinds of cookies, a fruit and nut pound cake, a layer cake...
Raspberry cordial, and a cherry pie. All together, six dishes.
Rin: If it's like that, any idiot should be satisfied.
Rin: The beginning of the tea party is at one o'oclock.
So, in five hours... Okay.
Page 18
Rin: (I'll make this order a success!!)
Rin: Uh, first off...
I'll cut the dough I made and refrigerated last night into cookies and bake them.
Rin: The classic cookies need a little assembly.
Place some jam in the middle of the plain cookies...
Rin: While they're baking, the raspberry cordial.
It seems a lot like raspberry juice...
Rin: The berries are mixed with sugar and put over heat,
And lemon juice and water are added. Once it reaches a boil, the mixture is strained.
(Rin: Incidentally, there's equal parts berries and sugar..)
[Sugar, 500g]
(Rin: The calories must be crazy...)
Rin: I did that part last night, so I just have to add water and soda to taste and it's ready.
Page 19
Rin: Next, the pound cake.
Rin: Beat together room temperature butter and sugar until it turns pale,
Then incorporate beaten eggs a little bit at a time.
(Rin: Looks like it's coming together...)
Rin: Then the flour,
Raisins, walnuts, orange zest, and almonds go in.
Rin: Stir to distribute evenly.
[All right? This cake tastes horrible! Is this the fault of the baking powder?]
[(Oh, Marilla!)]
Rin: (...Is how that scene went in the story, I think.)
Rin: (I guess things would really go wrong if the baking powder was bad back then.)
Rin: (But I'll be fine. I used good baking powder...)
[170C for 40-50 minutes.]
Rin: Oops, onto the next! (The cherry pie!)
Rin: I mean, I should clean up a little.
Uwah! It's already this late!?
(Crash!)
Rin: Ow!
Page 20
Rin: !
Rin: Uwah...
It's a success!!
Rin: (It rose nicely,
Has a golden brown color, and it smells great!!)
Rin: (It's going well!!!)
Rin: (Alright, let's keep this mood up!
The last obstacle for today!
The layer cake!!)
[Slice the sponge cake into layers and fill with jam and cream.]
(Basically, a shortcake.)
Page 21
Rin: Beat the eggs and sugar over heat over heat for 5 minutes until frothy.
Keep going until fluffy and airy.
[Ideal]
Rin: You can tell when it's finished when the mixture leaves tracks behind... (Or so it says...)
Rin: Huh?
This isn't any good...
Rin: Ehhhh~~?
The egg isn't whipping up at all...
Ryuu: (I thought it'd be any moment now, so I came to check...
But it looks like making sweets is pretty rough...)
Page 22
[20 minutes later.]
Rin: I...
Rin: I did it somehow...?
Rin: Haa... haa....
Rin: Gently mix flour into the whipped eggs using a sifter...
Then add milk to the finished batter and mix again.
Rin: When you put it in the dish, gently hit the bottom of the pan to get out any air bubbles, and put it in the oven.
Rin: Now I'll pour the custard onto the cherry pie I baked earlier,
And line it with cherries.
Page 23
Rin: Once the sponge cake is cooled, decorate it.
Rin: Okay...
Rin: Done!
Ryuu: Rin!!
Rintarou! Over here, in the garden!
Page 24
Ryuu: Let's eat over here!!!
[This is...]
[The picnic menu for traveling to the world of Anne of Green Gables.]
Page 25
[1. Raspberry cordial]
[2. Jam cookie
3. Chocolate cookie]
[4. Dried fruit and nut pound cake]
[5. Layer cake]
[6. Cherry pie]
Ryuu: It...
Ryuu: It's so high quality!! (Amazing!!)
Ryuu: Rintarou...
You really are impressive, huh... (Was this really your first time making these sweets...?)
Rin: Yeah.
Now, what to start with?
Ryuu: Hmm... Anything's fine.
Rin: !
What's that mean, just pick one!
Ryuu: I don't mean it like that.
Page 26
Ryuu: These are the confections you worked hard to make, right?
I'm sure all of them are delicious.
Rin: Then...
The layer cake.
Rin: Here.
Page 27
Rin: Why don't you call it down.
Your revelation or whatever.
Ryuu: Yeah.
Thanks for the food.
Page 29
Ryuu: ......
Ryuu: Rows...
Of apple trees?
[Just when did I get here...]
[Is this exit...
This way?]
Page 30
[An apple tree.]
(That's right.)
(The apple tree in the garden... I planted it when I'd just become an author.)
(A charm)
[To bear fruit]
Page 31
[To all sorts of creative ideas, just like that girl.]
Page 32
Rin: ....?
Rin: (Was it bad...?)
Rin: Ryuunosuke?
Page 33
Ryuu: Mm!
Ryuu: Delicious...!
Rin: Eh?
Ryuu: It's delicious!
All of it's amazingly good!
Rin: R-
Really...?
Ryuu: Really, really!
Ryuu: I just remembered
How I felt when I was just starting as an author...
Page 34
Ryuu: It's all thanks to you, Rintarou!!
Ryuu: It's really wonderful! Thank you!!
(Huh...)
Rin: (Huh?)
Rin: Eh...
Rin: Uh...
Rin: (Huh, what's with that...)
Page 35
Rin: The... job...
Ryuu: ?
Rin: (Just now, he told me "thank you"...
Big bro's gratitude...)
Rin: Well, that job... my work...
Uh, that is...
Rin: (What...
What should I do?!!)
[Man: Takatsuki-kun.
Can't you try serving the customers with more of a smile?]
[Rin: ...
I can't.]
[Ah...
I...]
(This is the first time anyone's been pleased with my work, isn't it....)
Rin: Th...
Rin: ......
Thanks.
Page 36
Rin: !!
Rin: Uwa!
Rin: The wind's picked up, huh.
Should we move back inside? Ryuunosuke.
Page 37
[Oh.
It switched on.]
Page 38
Dad: Isn't that amazing, Rintarou?
Ryuunosuke won a big award for his novel.
Dad: Amazing...
[A 16 year old's break-out work!]
Rin: (Ryuunosuke is...)
(A shut-in with way too much imagination, and he can't acclimate to society...)
(Even so, he's made an incredible amount of people happy.)
(I really...
Wanted to know what I could do, and started doing part-time jobs...)
Page 39
Rin: ...Is it good?
Rin: (I'm still no match for him...
But...)
Ryuu: Hmm?
Ryuu: Oh, yeah...
Rin: (What an absent-minded reply.)
(Making others happy isn't so bad.)
Rin: ...
Uh-huh.
Page 40
[The next day]
Rin: Eh...
What's this "Divine Revelation" on the 27th?!
Ryuu: It's an appointment...
I realized it this time. I need your power.
Rin: You liar!
Don't just decide that on your own, it's a huge pain!
Eh?
Ryuu: For a writer, you know...
You should realize that I need a new revelation one after the other...
[<-A day before the deadline.]
Rin: Wh--
Ryuu: Don't you get it?!
Rin: ......
.....
Rin: I...
Rin: I get it....
Ryuu: (Alright!) I made my appointment. That's one thing off my mind.
Ah, but I'll probably have morning and night switched around by then, so it should be in the evening!
Ryuu: Oh, if I eat too much I'll get tired, so make something light.
Even so, I want something nutritious.
Rin: ......
Ryuu: But if it's hard to digest, my concentration will....
[That was the start of a pain-in-ass event in my regular life.]
